I'm Betty Ray, editor at @edutopia. Very excited to be with the great folks from Metro Nashville Public Schools to talk about trauma Informed practices and social emotional learning. #edutopiachat
A1: Trauma impacts the way children interact with substantive material, are assessed, interact with me and their fellow students. It is pervasive. #EdutopiaChat
A1 I’ve seen students shut down, exhibit attention-seeking behavior, have trouble relating to peers, failure avoidance, etc. It really looks different for every child. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Perception is reality. This is a big one that I see. My intentions may not always be met with understanding and I have to understand this as the adult. #edutopiachat
Hi there! I'm Julie Johnson from Hilliard, Ohio. I am the foster mom of 2 girls who have traumatic backgrounds and teach in a K-5 building. #edutopiachat
A1 Trauma can manifest in many ways like fear & aggression. The child might shut-down, act out & avoid make eye contact. Many different “difficult behaviors” can be related to #trauma or masquerade as other issues, i.e. ADHD. #edutopiachat
A1: sometimes the students will come in sad or angry about something that happened at home. They are also very concerned about what happens in the media. #EdutopiaChat
A1: At 18, Shonya's house burned down. Because of the trauma of losing her home, she began acting out and didn't trust adults - https://t.co/XzCeTn6wtf#edutopiachat
A1- Teaching in a program for students with high ACEs score..see it in every way on a daily basis. It affects how they interact with each other, affects attendance, behavior, learning and their level of trust. #edutopiachat
A2: I've seen it impact a child's ability to trust & build rapport. Students affected by trauma are reluctant to trust a teacher/adult, let alone a learning process. #edutopiachat
That’s one of the real challenges, isn’t it? The fact that the symptoms can look so different from child to child. Everything from apathy to rage to everything in between. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Students in poverty have been conditioned to suppress their pain. It often manifests as anger. It is critical to recognize that frustrated students are often those that have experienced the highest levels of trauma and need the most loving attention #EdutopiaChat
A1: Trauma affects ss in EVERY way. I feel some of the most detrimental impacts are to their confidence and ability to cope or react to situations appropriately...which in return impact everything else. #edutopiachat
A1: Ss have harder time concentration and focusing - higher % Ss with ACE's- we're exploring the use of morning meeting with some success #edutopiachat
A1.1 While trauma has many negative effects, strong, caring & loving relationships can shield #children from the impact of negative experiences: https://t.co/lH5UzD9fay#edutopiachat
I am Jane from Ancaster, Ontario. I work in a high needs inner city school in Hamilton, Ontario teaching struggling readers in K and grade 1 #edutopiachat
A1: I would think the challenge is knowing that it’s trauma-based behavior. It all starts with relationships, and knowing a kid will help inform that determination. #edutopiachat
A1: It’s that unseen baggage that kids have to carry and without knowing what it is or dealing with it, we often escalate instead of diffuse issues #edutopiachat
A1: I've seen it impact a child's ability to trust & build rapport. Students affected by trauma are reluctant to trust a teacher/adult, let alone a learning process. #edutopiachat
A1: Trauma also provides a block to processing time. Meaning, there isn't any and responses are often reactions. It's important to know this as the teacher. #edutopiachat
A1 Because social-emotional development is a key component in meeting the needs of the #WholeChild, teachers must be sensitive to childhood trauma. Your classroom may be the one safe place that offers a sense of belonging and trust. #edutopiachat
I am currently doing an internship one day a week were many of the students have trauma at home it seems like they struggle to be motivated to do the work #edutopiachat
A1: I have seen kids displaced at home, not knowing where they are going to spend the night due to circumstances outside of their control. When they get to my class they are understandably destractwd and equally defensive. #EdutopiaChat
A1: When I was teaching 1st grade I would see trauma come through in the form of pictures, in students writing & in social interactions with other students. #Edutopiachat
A1: Trauma affects my students in many ways. Many of my students have severe cognitive impairments and have had traumatic events happen in their lives. This adds to their day to day needs in the classroom. #edutopiachat
#edutopiachat
A1 Students respond to what they determine to be stress related situations. Although their responses may not be appropriate to school staff, they are tpba student operating in survival mode. #knowyourkids
A1 CIS site coordinators see students suffering from the emotional affects of trauma daily - children who have been exposed
to trauma are more likely to display internalizing and externalizing
behaviors, repeat a grade, have lower GPA, and be less
engaged in school #edutopiachat
A1: I am currently doing an internship one day a week were many of the students have trauma at home it seems like they struggle to be motivated to do the work #edutopiachat
A1: Trauma affects the way our students think, speak, and act in every situation. It plays a role in trusting and building relationships with peers and adults. It's very difficult for learning to begin when trauma is so evident. #edutopiachat
A1: Children tend to isolate and distance themselves from others. What’s more alarming is the thoughts that people around cannot help or they themselves don’t want to be helped. #EdutopiaChat
Q1. Ss who experience trauma usually have difficulties interacting with their peers, attending, or may typically react vs respond to something unexpected or undesired #EdutopiaChat
A1. Trauma truly affects the whole child: academically, socially and emotionally. S’s might have trouble appropriately interacting with one another (and adults) as well as managing their emotions in healthy productive ways #EdutopiaChat
Trauma can affects children so many different ways. Some kids are reactive while others are reserved. It is key to know the students' stories in order to know how to support them. #EdutopiaChat
A1 definitely getting to know Ss & building relationships will guide our efforts ... Helps if adults smile & love their career. Enthusiasm is infectious and makes for a fun environment. Ss learn from Ts who care #EdutopiaChat
A1: In my special education experience trauma tends to cause students to withdraw, act out, or overcome depending on the level of support they have surrounding them. #EdutopiaChat

A1 I have a couple of grade 1-2 students with major anxiety issues. They are unable to stay focused at circle and sadly one is not able to retain much of what he has been taught over the last year+ in my room. ;( #edutopiachat
Yes! We have many discussions during our family meeting in the morning and share our daily goal setting with each other, & they become SO much more aware of helping each other when they are down. It’s pretty amazing. #edutopiachat
We're seeing positive results with implementing our model of integrated student supports where we coordinate supports & services for the student and the family: https://t.co/1NCFNcuoVb#edutopiachat
And yet, Derrick, I am certain that you create a warm, engaging learning environment that helps these troubled kids find meaning and motivation to persevere and to grow. #EdutopiaChat
A1: I have seen kids displaced at home, not knowing where they are going to spend the night due to circumstances outside of their control. When they get to my class they are understandably destractwd and equally defensive. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Kids with high #ACE scores have underdeveloped frontal lobes. Therefore, weak executive skills resulting in significant self-regulation deficits. #teachSEL#edutopiachat
A1: Trauma affects the students at my schools in different ways. Most frequently, students act out in a disruptive and aggressive manner. At times, students shut down and internalized their behavior, which may be difficult to discern that it was trauma-related. #EdutopiaChat
In middle school, I would see the impact of trauma in my students' response to loud noises, changes to the daily routine, as well as their interactions with authority figures, especially those adults who were unknown to them. #edutopiachat
I’ve seen students in trauma shut down and give up on themselves completely. Their behavior can fall within a spectrum of self isolation and escapism to outbursts and aggression. #EdutopiaChat
A1. Absolutely. Their coping skills are as varied as their situations. Some withdraw. Others act out. Some dive into music, sports, etc. to distract themselves and/or heal. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Trauma can manifest in so many behaviors! Hypervigilance can masquerade as hyperactivity. Fear can look like aggression (flight, freeze, or FIGHT). #edutopiachat
A1 definitely getting to know Ss & building relationships will guide our efforts ... Helps if adults smile & love their career. Enthusiasm is infectious and makes for a fun environment. Ss learn from Ts who care #EdutopiaChat
A trauma-informed approach to SEL is being aware of the impact of trauma in your students and the classroom. It is about being aware and responsive to those who have and are currently experiencing trauma. #EdutopiaChat
A2 We recommend a universal approach—assume all children are trauma affected & need SEL instruction & support. Emotional language literacy, modeling, active listening, etc...https://t.co/NZRT9yar5y#edutopiachat
A2 We need to understand that when our students enter the classroom they can’t check their personal lives at the door, and remember every single day that we have the power to make their lives better or worse. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Students either shut down or their traumas subconsciously infect their school work, their behavior, and their interactions with teachers and peers. #edutopiachat

A2. A trauma-informed approach to social emotional learning requires partnership between counselors, teachers, parents and other trusted adults to help guide students through short and long-term challenges... #edutopiachat#LetsK12Better
A1 Ss react in different ways: some shut down and do not respond to the school environment or interact with peers or adults. Some are loud & looking to shock others with their comments. Some are verbally and or physically aggressive towards others. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Trauma can turn a child’s world upside down. Behaviours can reflect a plea for compassion, support and empathy. Love them so they know that they matter and so they might begin to find their way back. #EdutopiaChat
A trauma-informed approach to SEL includes understanding ACEs that kids face, building trust, teaching healthy coping strategies, implementing restorative justice practices, & creating meaningful dialogue circles across Ss & Ts #EdutopiaChat
A2 It is about REALLY knowing your Ss. What they need, what they can't handle at this point in time, and helping support and meet them where they are in their SEL development. Then focusing on SEL growth and not any sort of finish line so to speak. #edutopiachat
As Ts also need to acknowledge they don't always check their personal lives at the door. Ts need to also address their trauma from their personal and professional lives. #edutopiachat

A2: Trauma informed teaching prioritizes deescalation and understanding. A student who is experiencing trauma will not act rationally in the moment. That is ok. They need to feel unconditional support in the face in crisis. Feeling love will lead to enduring change #EdutopiaChat
A2 Relationships First, Everything Else Second @TopDogTeaching always says this! I think Class Meetings are a High Impact strategy to develop relationships with your Ss! #SEL#edutopiachat
A2- It is a combination of Social Emotional Learning, a safe and secure environment, a sense of community with morning circles and check ins, using restorative practices. teaching mindfulness and coping skills #edutopiachat
A2: We focus on building social awareness & relationship skills to help students navigate diverse environments and relationships--while maintaining an empathetic attitude & mutual respect for others. #EdutopiaChat
A2: Trauma-informed approaches to social and emotional learning has to acknowledge the trauma and practitioners have to be aware & present #edutopiachat
A2: At the school level, I think it's having the adults take time to get to know students, the families and communities of those affected by the trauma... it means listening to their stories and practicing empathy, not sympathy #EdutopiaChat
And yet the students who continue to come to school, to collaborate, and to persevere are always a marvel and inspiration to me. Kids can be so strong and resilient in the face of such obstacles. #EdutopiaChat
A2: trauma informed approach is about recognition. It recognizes where and why a student is feeling the way they are. Staff create a positive enviromemetm for there students. #edutopiachat
A2: for me, it’s to know my weakness and to call on help from a social worker or school psychologist. As a disciplinarian at a HS, I rely heavily on them, along with teachers, especially SPED teachers #edutopiachat
A2. It is about making sure the student feels safe and relationship building.Making sure adults watch their tone, the pace they walk towards a child. Consistent regard for their perspective, calm cool colors in the room, non florescent lights, a plush environment #edutopiachat

Q2: I think communicating and teaching expectations clearly and regularly with the understanding that fair doesn’t have to mean equal when dealing with behavioral deficits #edutopiachat
A2: Using a trauma-informed approach to social and emotional learning looks and sounds like calm, consistent, explicit modeling of appropriate responses to external stimuli. It should feel real, and safe for students, free from judgement. #edutopiachat
A2 We recommend a universal approach—assume all children are trauma affected & need SEL instruction & support. Emotional language literacy, modeling, active listening, etc...https://t.co/NZRT9yar5y#edutopiachat
A1 - Children affected by trauma act differently in classes depending the amount and type of trauma they've suffered as well as how much support they've received from family, friends, teachers, and trained professionals. #NotaOneSizeFitsAll#edutopiachat
A2 It looks like empowering students by building their capacity and skill building through mentorship and providing systems of support to ensure the student is successful...Peace Corner, Check in Check Out, Leadership... #EdutopiaChat
A2: Being conscious of teaching approaches, building a relationship with the student, involving counselors or other staff members who have known the child for a while and may have established a positive rapport. #edutopiachat
Q2. A partner of ours describes this well. Trauma informed practices help our “spotlights” become “floodlights” so we’re no longer just focusing on the child but we can see what is happening in the background and think about how that might be impacting our S’s #EdutopiaChat
A2: we are beginning to train all of our teachers in simple de-escalation technique. 1. Change setting 2. Listen 3. Choices 4. Restore. And we are conducting push-ins by a team of educators to assist students in crisis without constantly removing from class. #EdutopiaChat
Q2. A trauma informed approach to SEL would incorporate the presidency of listening, taking time to ask questions to understand someone correctly, it would involve empathy, unconditional care and Suport, and it would include sincerity. #edutopiachat
A2. A trauma-informed approach to social emotional learning must also incorporate empathy. LOTS of empathy from those assisting the student and their family. And patience. Growth and recovery takes time. #edutopiachat#LetsK12Better
A2: Approach every child with love and understanding. Every person experiences some type of trauma and remembering that we all have baggage and need a moment/help sometimes puts things in perspective. No matter what I tell all my students I love them daily.❤️ #edutopiachat
AWARENESS, true understanding, empathy, love, & a whole lot of patience. It has to be a team approach. Not just staff but creating an whole class environment that brings those ss up rather then sets them back further. #edutopiachat

Absolutely! Trauma-informed practice models I’ve seen consistently emphasize self care for students and teachers alike. Such a critical piece of the puzzle. #EdutopiaChat
A2: Schools and classrooms can serve a milieu for students with trauma as long as the staff is committed to creating a safe, positive, empathetic environment with an emphasis on building relationships and healthy boundaries. #EdutopiaChat

A2 An aspect that must be attended to is trauma-informed spaces...preparing the physical spaces of our schools to be welcoming to EACH of our kids @DepressionCntr#edutopiachat
A2: This looks like Ts who have built a foundation of relationships with their Ss maintaining a SAFE place where Ss can express themselves and receive GUIDANCE to navigating these difficult circumstances. #edutopiachat
A2: A trauma-informed approach to SEL is creating a positive environment where teachers show their children empathy, validate their feelings, and develop strong relationships with their students. #edutopiachat
Lots of discussion. Lots of checking in. There has to be a system in place (or created organically) to keep all parties informed. Also if family members are not "engaged" or "activated", continuous outreach is key to turning the tide. #edutopiachat#LetsK12Better
A2 We recommend a universal approach—assume all children are trauma affected & need SEL instruction & support. Emotional language literacy, modeling, active listening, etc...https://t.co/NZRT9yar5y#edutopiachat
A2: A trauma-informed approach to SEL involves getting to know your students, building a relationship of trust and respect, teaching appropriate coping strategies, and using restorative practices. Be brave and communicate with love! #EdutopiaChat
Listening is key. Sometimes is hard with the demands of our day, but we have to remember to ALWAYS find time to listen. Some of the kids that need to tell me a lot to get through their day, but we can’t be of time I have journal with me. They at least feel heard #edutopiachat
#edutopiachat
A2 A trauma informed approach begins with a staff that clearly understands the difference between empathy and enabling. Understanding and loving our kids means we CARE!
So true...there are almost always reasons why students are acting the way they are...but finding the root cause and triggers are not so simple. #edutopiachat
YES!!! The physical space can really tell our kids a lot about what we think they deserve. We can build trust by showing them that they're worth beautiful, safe, clean spaces. #edutopiachat
A2: Trauma-informed also is a team approach & structures in place. Understanding the nuances of the trauma & its effect on relationships. #EdutopiaChat
A2 - Trauma informed care approach to SEL? Adults and students spending quality time together "talking it out" --> Having an adult who cares about you and that you can talk to on the regular can go a long way!
#edutopiachat@edutopia
A2: Sometimes educators are the worse at over complaining our practices. I think it starts at simply meeting each Ss where they are and growing from there. #edutopiachat#meetthemwheretheyare
A2: A trauma-informed approach to SEL is creating a positive environment where teachers show their children empathy, validate their feelings, and develop strong relationships with their students. #edutopiachat
Absolutely. It is the gateway toward progress, acceptance, and acknowledgement that allows kids who have experienced so much and they get to choose when to enter once a safe community is created. #edutopiachat
A3 Teaching students strategies to manage their stress empowers them to be more resilient in the face of every challenge, whether it’s intrapersonal, academic, or something else. #EdutopiaChat
Agree! Knowing ur student's stories & then using their stories 2 connect them w/ real people or characters in literature who have overcome challenges to find success, happiness & joy. Need to find what skills (functional/executive) they are deficit in & TEACH them. #edutopiachat
A2: Helping students to grow their mindsets and the way they view adversity can help. When Eli graduated last year, he was able to view his adversity as a part of who he is: https://t.co/ZzQDJr16r4#EdutopiaChat
As a secondary English teacher, I have taught the stories and narratives of the traumatized making an effort to both validate this as important and real and bring awareness to classmates. #EdutopiaChat
A2 I think sensitivity and respect are crucial for every child’s social-emotional growth. From the kids with the greatest challenges to those with the greatest charms, all students deserve to feel welcomed, included, and integral to the class community. #edutopiachat
A3 Teaching students strategies to manage their stress empowers them to be more resilient in the face of every challenge, whether it’s interpersonal, academic, or something else. #EdutopiaChat

YES! Knowing stories so powerful! Speaking of stories...check out @NaturalHigh 3-6min videos! Empowering stories Ss can relate to & grow from! #EdutopiaChat
A2: Knowing your students' stories, use the stories to understand how to appropriately stretch students' learning. Never use as an excuse or a reason to lower the bar. Many students of trauma need someone to tell them they can succeed! #edutopiachat
A3. If you're not addressing the trauma, and the Ss are distracted, checked out and falling increasingly behind, even the best curriculum won't matter. #EdutopiaChat
A3. The whole idea of "teaching grit" is one example...
Other examples include teaching kids how to look out for each other, practicing intentional listening, and working through personal setbacks with creative solutions.
#EdutopiaChat#LetsK12Better
A3: Giving Ss strategies to develop relationships. We are working to infuse @CASEL competencies into all academic disciplines. @mieducation has a great P-20 aligned guide for help! #EdutopiaChat

Utilizing the idea of a growth mindset and allowing students multiple opportunities to learn as well as utilizing teaching practices that are engaging and collaborative #edutopiachat
A3: It is critical that students with a history of trauma have consistent opportunities to engage in metacognition. It provides students with an avenue to articulate how their trauma has impacted their academic life. #EdutopiaChat
Is living with a learning or emotional difference considered trauma? I've never framed it as such. But it presents in many of the ways you are all describing? #edutopiachat
A3: best thing I’ve read on the topic is this idea of seven touches. If classrooms are about relationships ships then keArning is a journey of discovery. Links perfectly to SEL self discovery. #EdutopiaChathttps://t.co/0YJJVM5WWq
A3 Students who lack SEL skills are less able to focus and more likely to be disruptive or distracting. Addressing the SEL needs of students through SEL supports can improve students’ performance in the classroom by reducing disruptions & distractions. #edutopiachat 1/
A3 - Better question...how do you teach academics WITHOUT having SEL embedded throughout your teaching and classroom? #likePeas&Carrots
#edutopiachat@edutopia
A3 In ELA, students find empathy and coping strategies through living the lives of the characters from great books. The lesson always is that despite outward differences, we are mostly the same, and our joys and sorrows are part of the universal human experience. #edutopiachat
A2 One of our schools has instituted a student choice- an opportunity to go to the Cool Down Zone until ready to return to class @ELeducation#edutopiachat
A3: #SEL is the foundation to all learning, especially academics. Ss need to have strong executive function so they can attend to tasks, self-regulate, be able to set goals, work cooperatively, etc. Ss from Trauma biologically are underdeveloped in these areas. #EdutopiaChat
A3: Our PBL/Exhibition model lends itself to addressing SEL through intentional problem focused projects. Academics and SEL run parallel in terms of student learning. Ss propose real world solutions to these community issues #Edutopiachat
A3: We also utilize the TRAILS program training so our entire staff is not only trained but utilizes motivational interviewing & CBT practices for all kids. #EdutopiaChat
A3: Listen to the students, know where they are academically (supported by data), and understanding each child's learning style. Developing lessons based upon learning styles and areas of need. #edutopiachat
A2. We combine trauma-informed practice with positive education to give teachers strategies that enable healing and strengths-based growth in the classroom #EdutopiaChat
I had a history teacher who worked to connect with us as much as possible, we worked through social issues in society as a class because we felt very comfortable with the teacher and others in class beause every day was based on discussion and personal connections #edutopiachat
A3: As a LSS teacher, I try to embed this into our daily activies. Our classroom is a comfortable learning environment for students to come and feel safe. If they don’t feel comfortable or safe at school academic tasks can be challenging. #edutopiachat
We also try to connect relationship-building to diversity and inclusiveness, so students learn that our differences are what make us stronger! #EdutopiaChat
This week in Health: 7th grade putting on their #BlueZone planning hats & "Blue Zoning" their towns! They love the #roaddiet initiative! @BlueZones Also, @NaturalHigh daily! ~ 8th grade teams presenting this week, various topics #PBL
A3- Connect these practices to academics by using writing and have Ss reflect on their moods/emotions.,read books where we can learn SEL lessons like https://t.co/SJSCUZhsJ5 Ted Talks to motivate, inspire that we are more than our circumstances.#edutopiachat
A2: It would include taking the time to build a relationship (not contingent upon academics or behaviors), to build a safe and trusting space and then help Ss navigate challenges from there. #EdutopiaChat
A3: I feel that SEL complement and mirror #21stcenturyskills that school academics requires. It is important to embed SEL practices into instruction and curriculum because students cannot reach their academic potential if their socio-emotional needs are not met. #EdutopiaChat
Lots of kids come to school with their invisible backpacks, weighted with struggles.
Stress, worry, fear, anxiety, trauma, lack of physical needs, loneliness, anger, sadness, & hopelessness can make them so heavy; too heavy for learning to happen.
Notice & love them instead.
A1: I've seen an increase in trauma affecting our students behavior-We had a traumatic event happen on our campus & since then I'm more aware that trauma affects both students & adults in the building. We're learning strategies first hand that's why I'm here. #edutopiachat
A3. Open and honest conversations about coping skills; analyzing the coping skills, motivations, etc. of characters. Using poetry and journaling as outlets. A student once made me cry big, ugly tears after reading a poem about his absentee father. #EdutopiaChat
#edutopiachat
A3. The most challenging part of trauma and education is getting teachers to understand that until kids learn to self regulate, the teaching and learning environment will not thrive.
A3 The strategies we teach Ss through Responsive Classroom and Social Thinking SuperFlex/Unthinkables work is woven throughout our entire school day. Students use the vocabulary and strategies from @socialthinking to manage and cope with issues. #edutopiachat

A3: 1) incorporate topix in dialogue circles which connect to academics 2) utilize knowledge of Ss to anticipate/recognize potential triggers & prompt Ss to make appropriate choices to cope 3) build meaningful opportunities 4 Ss to see themselves reflected in texts #edutopiachat
A3. Trauma-informed SEL will help create healthy classroom & school environments where powerful learning can occur. Students need to be able identify, express and manage emotions effectively to help them overcome obstacles and challenges #EdutopiaChat

A3. Trauma informed SEL will also help teachers identify what emotions students are carrying into the school day with them, which gives teachers a better understanding of what that child needs from them #EdutopiaChat
A3: Providing students with opportunities to explore their fears and/or feelings about hazardous weather, we spent time talking about the consequences of severe storms for family and friends. They would then practice how to effectively advocate and ask for help. #edutopiachat
A3. It is important to link the soft skills to learning in the content areas. Role playing, critical thinking, general discussion around how soft skills generalize in content is a great way to enhance learning opportunities #edutopiachat

Yes! We know if we have something on our mind, we aren’t as focused. We can’t expect them to be either. We do worry writing when we need it & jot down our worries. Then we crumble them up, get in a circle, & recycle our worries into positive thoughts as a group! #EdutopiaChat
A4 One transformative way kids begin tp process and move beyond their trauma is by helping others. The #BenefitMindset is a powerful way for students to move from empathy to acts of altruism. Here are four ways to begin! #edutopiachathttps://t.co/csDXcBSkfg
A3: Through our text-based planning, we explicitly look for connections to the @TheLeaderinMe Seven Habits in the texts we use with our Ss. #edutopiachat
A4: In schools, CIS site coordinators are deployed to serve and connect at-risk students and families with resources via an evidence-based
model of Integrated Student Supports that allows teachers to teach - https://t.co/b3ACbYzT8O#edutopiachat
A3. Our trauma-informed and wellbeing strategies are designed in an upward spiral to support students to be 'ready to learn' and grow their academic stamina #EdutopiaChat
A3 Read alouds help students share what’s going on in their lives. We’ve read LOVE by @mattdelapena & Pancho Rabbit & the Coyote by @duncantonatiuh that led to convos/writing about divorce & parents leaving kids behind in Mexico to work in the US #edutopiachat
A3: Trauma-informed SEL practices are essential for academic success. In the past, I have shared diverse children's literature, gave students space to share their personal stories through journal writing, and helped them develop their self-regulation skills. #edutopiachat
A3: Mindfulness can be a helpful tool for overcoming trauma, too. In one of our classes, high school students learn how to stay self-aware and focused through meditation, yoga & breathing exercises. #EdutopiaChathttps://t.co/LZv5Tif2WB
Q4- It is also about teachers having a growth mindset. I talk to teachers about trauma-informed practices in the class on a daily basis. Let them see SEL approaches are good for all kids. Teach The Whole Child. Teach each one, reach each one. #EdutopiaChat
A4: We have begun with some basic PD in helping identify students needs and what we can do systemically. As we begin it does feel overwhelming. I think that as we tighten our system & participate school wide we will feel less of a burden & more like a support. #edutopiachat
When we tied in information ACEs to our Trauma Informed Care PD, it was eye opening for our teachers! @btalonia I'm with you, what effective PDs have people provided for teachers? #edutopiachat
A4: we have mobilized a team of educators (counselors, specialists, Coordinators like me, to “push-in” and assist teachers with this work in the hopes of seeing transference occur more organically than as a programmed expectation. #EdutopiaChat
A4 Slowly and surely! Being trauma Informed is not a checklist, but a mindset change. It is critical that EVERYONE in the building is working towards being Trauma Informed. @SporLin talks about how it starts in the school office! #edutopiachat
A4. Leaders must model the practice. Often times, authentic dialogue with students can be the best way to incorporate SEL learning. Leaders must demonstrate how to reach these conversations by providing PD on effective communication and relationship building #edutopiachat
A4: Such an important question to ask!! First, we HAVE to be cognizant of the secondary trauma our teachers may be exposed to. Learning what some of their Ss have endured, can have a huge impact. We have to teach teacher self-care! #EdutopiaChat
A3 Students need to be given plenty of breathing room to grow (and pull back as necessary) so they can ultimately move forward through successful learning challenges. #edutopiachat
A4: How can devoting significant time to truly getting to know and understand our students’ needs ever be “one more thing”? This is at the core of our vocation! #EdutopiaChat
A4. Look for programs that address your school community’s needs but don’t require a heavy lift when it comes to implementation and sustainability! #EdutopiaChat
A4: Providing teachers with sentence or question stems that could be applied across content areas could make the process seem less daunting to those who feel like "it is just one more thing". #edutopiachat
#edutopiachat
I had the opportunity to work with our urban staff. Understanding the effects of trauma is not one more thing...TRAUMA is the ONLY thing you need to understand about our kids!
A4: this is the tricky part because the question should be how does the board and administration support #traumainformed practices otherwise it will feel like just another thing to do #EdutopiaChat
This is one of our favorites! It’s amazing how fast they pick up on it, and you begin to see them use the strategies on their own! We just have to introduce it to them. @GoNoodle has some really great mindfulness videos! #edutopiachat
A4. It takes a village... Administrators need to be aware, and support and empower their teachers. School Boards need to provide adequate funding and manpower for schools. And the parent community TOGETHER must participate in PTA and in other ways... #edutopiachat#LetsK12Better
Practices looks like SEL integrated in every classroom through morning meetings and restorative circles/taking time to understand behaviors and create relationships/schools counselors in ratio #edutopiachat
A4: Connect teachers to Maslow, Trauma Informed, NSM, etc. to illustrate that skills like self-regulation, executive functioning, etc. have to be systematically taught and reinforced in order for all cognitive learning to happen. #edutopiachat
A4: Make it real for them. Tug at their heartstrings. Teach kids how to share their stories with others. I would like to say thanking the teachers that were there for them and that loved on them will make other teachers want to do the same #EdutopiaChat
And to also keep in mind that the original CDC- Kaiser study with 17000+ ...mostly white (75%), middle class employed folks...with the same health and education outcomes. Not just low SES kids
#EdutopiaChat
A4: We encourage teachers to form meaningful connections with students through mentorship programs. Mentors enhance school climate by listening to students and showing them their voices matter. It also motivates teachers! #EdutopiaChathttps://t.co/yuEbNgBabi
A4 Educators can move beyond the "one more thing" mentality by embracing the fact that #SEL is part of every curriculum and that it is a crucial component of academic achievement for every student, from developing to advanced. #edutopiachat
A4: SEL needs to be a part of the school culture. Integrate it into everything the school does. Include the language of SEL in Ts interactions with Ss. Do it consistently or Ss learning will never progress at the pace you want #Edutopiachat
A4: By recognizing that trauma SEL exists in the first place. I would think the best-practices for trauma learners are best-practice for all learners. It’s not “one more thing,” it’s what you should already do. #edutopiachat
A4: It's important to remind each other that none of us has all the answers or the magic wand to solve it all. This is hard & painful stuff. What we CAN do is help each other learn, grow, and be the best educators (and humans) we can be! Modeling with love! #edutopiachat
A4: Secondly, we have to allow for the space of a mindset shift. This is not just “another thing,” being Trauma-Infused is a philosophy! #powerofawareness#getbuyin#EdutopiaChat
A4: @valorcollegiate is a leader here by having entire staff engage in restorative circles so every adult understands the processes of SEL. When Ts fully understand trauma & its manifestations, the mindset will shift from 1 more thing to do to THE thing we must do. #edutopiachat

A4: Let teachers look through a sample ACE survey so they understand just how "real" these issues are. Deep down, all teachers care about kids. So, this really gets to the core of being a teacher, it's not just something "extra". #EdutopiaChat
A4: Teachers have to find it important! If they don't value classroom culture, climate, and relationships, they aren't going to make these trauma-informed practices a priority. #EdutopiaChat
A4: Integrating SEL into school culture can make it look like less of a barrier or an obstacle, and more like a positive part of everyone's day. @valorcollegiate has a great model that incorporates SEL consistently into faculty activities: https://t.co/iuSg0mpwzj#edutopiachat

A4: Remind teachers content is important, but that at the end of the day we are all people. All people/students long for understanding and to be cared for...people are our priority...without addressing the person how can they learn? Take the time for SEL in class. #edutopiachat
#EdutopiaChat I invite our School Adjustment Counselor in! She does a fabulous job chatting about anxiety & depression awareness, and helps to erase the stigma of mental health. Supports visits for guidance! Huge!
A4: We are going to try and create a group of teachers to be the engine. I'm hoping understanding builds and we can get momentum from there. It's tricky to get everyone on board. #edutopiachat
A4: present teachers data that supports this work. Additionally giving them the proper support (time, space, PD) so they feel they can execute strategies in the classroom. Show them examples of how their efforts will increase student wellness and acheivement. #EdutopiaChat
So far it has been organic and lead by our leadership team. We are in a place where we don’t know what we don’t know. That’s why I’m here... to expand our learning. #EdutopiaChat
A4. Teachers also need mentors. They need continuous training and professional development. They need supports in place so that they are empowered to act, observe, and assist when extra is required of them. #edutopiachat#LetsK12Better
Great re-framing. Do you feel like your school has embraced this philosophy? What does it take for a school to undertake this mindset shift? #EdutopiaChat
A4: As a teacher, I would never see this as "one more thing" to do. I would want to meet my students where they are at emotionally and support them through teaching SEL skills. SEL should also be integrated school-wide and PD should be throughout the year. #edutopiachat
If you get a chance to listen to some of their feedback in the video, students seemed to agree that it helped them focus and understand how to process their emotions! It was a great lesson. #EdutopiaChat
A4. Equip every adult in the school with training on trauma-informed/social emotional practices so there is a supportive and collaborative network. Make time and space for self-care. Educate families and the local community as well-- it takes a village. #EdutopiaChat
A teacher taking this approach, (while I understand the pressures we face)is just unacceptable to me. We have all said it clearly affects academics & a child’s emotional health..SO this is one of those top priorities in my mind! It has to be integrated in your day. #edutopiachat
A5: Trauma informed practices creates better citizens. Recruit parents and community members who are eager to help students become more empathetic and adaptive adults. #EdutopiaChat
A4 Let's be honest, the best teachers chose this career for the RELATIONSHIPS with their students just as much as for the academic learning. It is a joy and a privilege to interact with kids on a daily basis and to support them in realizing their full potential! #edutopiachat
A4: Students benefit from learning how to interact with adults, and adults can benefit from forming mentorships with students, too! It's all about an eagerness to learn from one another. https://t.co/2YZH5r1Yp1#EdutopiaChat
I also think it is important to help our students understand the root of their struggles, and the why behind their responses to stimuli that might be perceived by others as negative. #edutopiachat@edutopia
Thing is #SEL was always there but educators/education systems didn’t give it the same attention. The need to care for students holistically isn’t new; it’s that now we know better so we’re doing better #edutopiachat
A4 Educators can move beyond the "one more thing" mentality by embracing the fact that #SEL is part of every curriculum and that it is a crucial component of academic achievement for every student, from developing to advanced. #edutopiachat
We have strong pockets! But just like we have to meet all Ss where they are, I feel the same with T. Sometimes the shift is quick, sometimes it takes longer. My experience has shown me it’s harder to the buy-in from our staff that’s been Trauma-exposed themselves. #EdutopiaChat
A3: SEL increases academic achievement so adding it in is a winner! For example, oractices like mindfulness can help with self-regulation to both support focus on academics as well as pausing before potentially having an emotional outburst. #EdutopiaChat
A5 Parents & the community will support these practices when we educate on the broad reaching benefits. Invite them to try it at home! Here's our #baby & #toddler appropriate tips but many apply to older kids too: https://t.co/NVp8I5eJw4#edutopiachat

A4. My school is looking for ways to promote trauma-informed teaching. Any recommendations for how we should start? What books/resources are most impactful?#edutopiachat
A5: Often parents are experiencing or have experienced trauma themselves. It is so important that we leave judgment at the door, there just isn't room for it at the table, listen and guide. Build trust first. Same as with the Ss. #edutopiachat
A4 Let's be honest, the best teachers chose this career for the RELATIONSHIPS with their students just as much as for the academic learning. It is a joy and a privilege to interact with kids on a daily basis and to support them in realizing their full potential! #edutopiachat
A5: Awareness. Awareness. Awareness. I am always amazed at how little we collectively know about trauma effects and how eager we are to learn about trauma once we are aware. #edutopiachat
A4 You support Ts by getting buy-in across the school & integrating the SEL program/supports school-wide so SEL work isn't done in insolation. With common language & strategies in EVERY ROOM in the building, you're creating a solid foundation & toolbox for each S. #edutopiachat
A5: Building strong trusting relationships with parents and building the opportunity to explain the why behind all approaches. When parents know you are supporting them and their children they will buy in. Be sincere. #EdutopiaChat
A4: Integrating these practices should be natural and organic. It shouldn’t be “one more thing.” It should be a part of everything you already do. #edutopiachat
A5. BRING THEM IN! To get buy-in and support you have to let the stakeholders in on the plan. Provide opportunities for them to make positive impact on the school & the students. Communicate needs clearly. Many parents WANT to help but don't know how. #edutopiachat#LetsK12Better
A5: In my work in Kansas, I've found that communities are especially willing to invest and support SEL in their youth. Multiple civic organizations are fully funding SEL efforts in their communities. Great opportunity to broaden partnerships! #edutopiachat
A5: As we identify our approach we get our PTSA involved. Currently we're working hand in hand with @Hope4Utah to inform parents & community about suicide prevention. It's easy to hand off to the school in a community but in reality, SEL belongs to all of us. #edutopiachat
A4. Trauma-informed practices have a dual benefit. We model strategies that can integrate into and enhance the lives of both teachers and students inside and outside the classroom, e.g. Active Constructive Responding - https://t.co/ElGf2Nj0Gk#EdutopiaChat
A5 Relationships, relationships, relationships! You create community & parent buy-in the same way you build student buy-in - by listening & building relationships. #edutopiachat
A5: supporting P’s in their S’s struggles. Often the only interectionwe have with P’s is when S’s are receiving consequences. Taking the time to interact with P’s right at that moment (someone other than the disciplinarian) is a chance to start a relationship. #EdutopiaChat
A5: I think the best way is to just start having open and honest conversations with all stakeholders -- a trauma-informed school culture is also a must. Having teachers open up about their own experiences of trauma to parents and the community could really help too! #EdutopiaChat
A1: I’ve seen trauma manifest in typical ways like lashing out or isolation. However, I’ve also seen it manifest in ways you might not expect— one of my Ss used jokes and incessant silliness as a mask for his trauma & a way to distract himself by distracting others #edutopiachat
A3: Students who don't feel safe and understood can't learn. SEL practices can easily be integrated into an existing curriculum if the buy-in is there. #edutopiachat
A4: It's so important that we try to understand and honor the cultures our kids come from, no matter how different they are from our own. Trauma isn't a culture, it's universal- and it's not linked to poverty or race or citizenship. #edutopiachat
A5. Meeting the family with compassion, not judgement. Kindness, not brow beating. Clearly communicating that we are in a partnership, members of a community for them and their children. #TeamworkMakesTheDreamwork#EdutopiaChat
A5: Be intentional about the delivery of information, families and community could easily be offended. Share strategies, educate, discuss, listen. #edutopiachat
A5- We outreach to the community to support our mentoring program and events. Community sees value in it because students will be better citizens..Also involved non-profit organizations for students to learn empathy like helping the homeless. #EdutopiaChat
@edutopia A5: I think by having a very open and welcoming building, staff/faculty this way parents know they are supported. Also having resources or info about resources that could help struggling parents readily available. #edutopiachat
Home visits were HUGE for us when my son started PreK! We really got to feel like we knew his teachers & the environment he was abt to enter into #edutopiachat
A5: Build relationships with parents at events, at drop off, at dismissal. Send information home in multiple formats, create school wide events around the topic, make it a theme, board presentations, invite local media, publish info and actions on social media #EdutopiaChat
A5: As far as the community, I think it needs to be out in the open. Talk to the influential contributors of the common good within your community. I think meeting with community members, board of ed, leadership, it all matters. #edutopiachat
A1. Unfortunately, trauma is unforgiving, pervasive and confusing for both students and staff. I typically see students who are deeply withdrawn, rarely smile, angry and aggressive. Also, a deep skepticism of the adults who are willing to help. #EdutopiaChat
A5: We have flirted with the idea of offering parents an opportunity to come talk with our Ts. Ss offer 1 perspective. Parents offer a completely different one. It informs the various approaches we will integrate within the school. #Edutopiachat
A5 A teacher's best calling card with parents is when their students themselves sing their praises. A student's enthusiasm for your lessons and projects, the way they talk about their beloved teacher... Parents want this type of #WhileChild approach. #edutopiachat
A5: Engaging parents and other community members in experiences at the school that highlight the importance of SEL and the positive outcomes for all stakeholders can be helpful. Parents want to know the why so they can be supportive. #edutopiachat
Yes! AND go to where they are. Some of your biggest allies (or naysayers) aren't going to come into the school because it was the source of some of their trauma. Go where they're comfortable- especially if it makes you uncomfortable #EdutopiaChat
A5: Hold events to address the SEL needs of the community. Bring everyone together to celebrate students, learning, and provide help for the needs of the community/parents. We can't help kids without helping the world they live in to get better.❤️ #edutopiachat

A5 Our district started using Second Step SEL curriculum this year and our counselors share parent info on their Facebook page. Anyone else using 2nd step? #edutopiachat
SHARE what we are doing AND why we are doing it. People love to see images of their kids not only learning academics, but practicing how to be more caring humans & citizens of our world. I now have parents that practice the strategies w. Them bc them see it works! #edutopiachat
A5: Communicate with families- why/how will this look. Encourage their participation by opening the doors to schools & creating as many opportunities for community engagement as possible. Create vehicles for family+community governance. Listen to families & adapt. #EdutopiaChat
A5. Invite parents to the school, provide them w diff opportunities to see the benefits. Meet them in the middle if necessary. If they can’t come to the school provide the training in the community. Try to make it fun & and invite the whole family #edutopiachat

All students benefit from trauma informed practices. It is relational, positive emotional modeling, great teaching practice. All students should feel safe & supported. Most of all when there is chaos, as teachers we must share/model our calm not join the chaos.
A5 - Where are these communities that don't want their children to be cared for, respected, and supported by the adults in the school building? #NeverAgain should be more than enough reason to support more SEL (and counselors) in schools!

A5: To get parents and the community to support SEL, they must be aware of all of its benefits including improved social-emotional skills, academic performance, and attitudes towards self/others/school.

A5 mentor programs brings in the community. At my school we have mentors that meet with all of our students the 2nd & 4th Friday every month. Awesome results. Parents... invite them in or GO TO THEM for PD's focused on strategies to help them at home. #edutopiachat#EDUS673
A5: Reinforce empathy across the school and community. Everyone benefits from adults and students who understand what it means to be empathetic, compassionate, 21st century citizens. #EdutopiaChathttps://t.co/iUPCOoy8dA

All students benefit from trauma informed practices. It is relational, positive emotional modeling, great teaching practice. All students should feel safe & supported. Most of all when there is chaos, as teachers we must share/model our calm not join the chaos.
A3: I’m lucky because in a middle school ELA class, there’s plenty of connections to the material I can make regarding SEL. I’ve often shifted mid-lesson to focus on something pertinent that’s come up in regards to trauma or coping skills or overcoming adversity #edutopiachat
@edutopia#edutopiachat Will there be an archive of the chat from today? Thanks so much for bringing such an important topic to the center of conversation.
