It's 8:30 on a Wednesday...that means it's #TXed time! Welcome to the #TXed chat. My name is Paul, and I'm from Richmond, TX. Who else is joining us tonight?
A1: In order to avoid having those "rainy days" effect you as a teacher I think proper planning is needed and a good attitude. Plan something fun for a day when you don't feel up to going into work. Most of all just remember to stay positive! #txed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
Looking for a dynamic Assistant Principal at a small, highly diverse, suburban district on the southwest side of Houston. Are you ready to join the best kept secret in the state?Message me for details!#KidsDeserveIt#txed
Q1: As a adult working with children it is really important to remember how the world is changing all the time and being able to learn from the students and grow will make you a more effective instructor #txed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
A1: we of all people know how important learning is. Education is like anything, there is constant change and we have to adapt. Kids are different each year, tech is different each year, society is different each year. We have to grow and stay up to date to support our Ss #TXed
A1 Education changes from year to year just like our students. We have to stay up to date on PD, new trends, as well as find new ways to engage and teach our learners. #TXed
A1: I don't know about you guys, but growth areas are what give me energy in my professional life. I love moving forward. I've never really known what it is to be bored...thanks to Twitter, I never have to know! #txed
Q1. It’s important to recognize your own growth so that you can continue to find the best practices for kids. The world is changing around us. We need to grow with it. Life is exciting that way.#txed
Having taught for five years and now working all over the state the last 17... The most successful teachers I meet are the ones who can adapt and always keep the kids first in the ever changing environment. #txed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
A1: you’ve got to learn and grow to keep it fresh! To keep the passion up and the creative juices flowing. Learning new things motivates and excites me! #txed
A1 Growth is the only way to move forward. If we become stagnant, don’t learn in any way or try any new things, we are committing to wilting like a flower with no water and in turn telling our students we’ve given up. #TXed
A1: Hello #txed ~ If we keep doing what we've always done, we're teaching to our past, not their future. Kids deserve better, so we keep learning in order to propel us forward into the future alongside our students.
A1:This is year 20 for me and it's a completely different ballgame for teachers these days. Phones change, dentistry changes, tvs change, medicine changes. I have to change in order to stay relevant and effective. #txed
A1: Simple answer #kidsdeserveit. As a society we are changing and growing so in order to keep our educational practices relevant we must continually be learners ourselves. #txed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
Q2: John Wooden once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." How does this relate to the preconceived notion, of some, that they are done learning and have no more room to GROW? #TXed
Because growing as an educator is equivlant to success, innovation, creativity, and so much more. Having a Growth Mindset means that you won't settle for mediocre or just "ok". #growhmindset#growth#grow
Don't settle, be AWESOME! #txed
A1: the world@today is so different than when we were in school and we have to change school at the same pace as the world. That’s takes educators learning more. I’ll drop a #TEDTalkedu in when I find it that describes it well! #txed
A1: I don't know about you guys, but growth areas are what give me energy in my professional life. I love moving forward. I've never really known what it is to be bored...thanks to Twitter, I never have to know! #txed
Technology is driving education. If someone chooses not to evolve with the "times", then they'll end up left behind with their toolbox of all of the things that "we've always done" #txed
A2 Learning never stops. If it did, Education wouldn’t be so different as it is today. Encourage others to join the journey along with students. It’s a wild ride. #TXed
A2: I think some of this relates to the application of knowledge changes & is enhanced over time so while we might know a lot of basic facts we can grow in our application of those facts. #txed
Q2: John Wooden once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." How does this relate to the preconceived notion, of some, that they are done learning and have no more room to GROW? #TXed
A1- Education changes so rapidly. If we don’t continue to change with it, we do a complete disservice to the Ss who sit in our classrooms everyday #txed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
A2: I shared this last night; If we stop growing because we think we know it all, then we're stagnating or dying. We need to keep up with the changes in our world in order to keep up and offer new material to our learners. #txed
A2 I think when someone thinks they know it all, they’re afraid to admit they don’t. No one WANTS to be stagnant, they just become too afraid of the things changing so quickly around them and lack confidence to try and possibly fail. #TXed
Q2: John Wooden once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." How does this relate to the preconceived notion, of some, that they are done learning and have no more room to GROW? #TXed
A2: Simply put, speaking slower and louder will not help our kids when they don't understand something. We expect them to adapt and grow...to continue learning. We need to make sure we are setting an example for them. #txed
A2: People become complacent and comfortable with where they are at. This is when I rely on my peers and #pln the MOST! They PUSH me every single day to be better, do better, and continually grow as an educator! #txed
A2 I think when someone thinks they know it all, they’re afraid to admit they don’t. No one WANTS to be stagnant, they just become too afraid of the things changing so quickly around them and lack confidence to try and possibly fail. #TXed
A2 you can’t be an expert at everything. And you can’t be an expert all of the time. You have to be a lifelong learner. It’s a good lesson to learn in a society driven by perfectionism. And it’s a great example to model for kids. #txed
Q2: John Wooden once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." How does this relate to the preconceived notion, of some, that they are done learning and have no more room to GROW? #TXed
A2: This is a good one! Can you truly ever be done learning? I'm mindful of what happens to plants and trees when the roots have no room to grow...
#TXed
Q2. When one thinks they know everything they become afraid of failure. They have lost the joy in trying something out of the box. Why? Insecurities maybe? I just know I’m not done yet...😊#txed
Young people will develop their vision of a perfect union by more exposure to current events. It's important to keep #Students informed and help them draw their own conclusion based on credible evidence. #edu365#edchat#txed#edreform
A2: once I moved out of the classroom, I saw and learned so much more about teaching. I would be a better teacher today than I was. There is always something to improve upon and it comes back to #KidsDeserveIt#TXed
A3-There is nothing better than the good old sit down and talk it out approach. There needs to be trust but we learn together when we share together #TXed
A3 When I trained for Reading Recovery years ago I was required to observe and participate in 'behind the glass' lessons. I learned so much by observing other Ts! I think we can learn so much from observing others and sharing our knowledge! #pineapplecharts#txed
A2 Twitter chats and Edcamps are my jam. Letting professionals choose how they learn best allows for a key into the world of professional learning. #txed
Q3: The best model for professional development is whatever works for the educator personally. Everyone has their own way of figuring things out; it's the motivation to development that helps educators grow #TXed
A3: I think PD that gives choice is the best. It is what I enjoy most & the most positive feedback I get from staff as well. I am looking at moving to more personalized PD next year thanks to @mfaust#WGEDD#txed
A3: I studied PD systems during my principal program - research shows it needs to be purposeful, targeted and focused on one area to dive deep into and then revisited multiple times a year w/ cont feedback. We don't do well when learning many diff things at once. #txed
A3: The PD must be something a T needs...now, relevant to what they are doing, and engaging. Hands on is still a winner in my book. There must also be follow-through. Give them something that they can grow with. #txed
A2: In our field, as soon as we think we get it, the game is changed. Sometimes it's at the federal level, state, local, or even building/team level. #whomovedmycheese#txed
A3- one o/my personal favorites is recording & watching yourself on video. You can critique yourself, focusing on specific goals. With proper coaching & reflection during the process it can be life-changing!! #txed
A3: Just like Ss like differentiation, so do adults. Individualized instruction like in an ed camp experience or even in learning session that utilize all learning styles and offer engaging experiences certainly work best for someone like me. #txed
A3: PD that has the components of: not too much info at one time, understanding the why behind it, play/explore it some, then transfer it to action immediately. #txed
Continual "bite-size", specfic, puposful professional development thoughout the school year where educators have both a voice and a choice in their content. This consistent PD scoffolds instructional strategies to GROW upon. #txed
A3. I’m learning along with Twitter chats. That’s the best positive, encouraging, and uplifting PD for me. I enjoy focused discussions with colleagues on our specific concerns. #txed
A3: Traditional PD is often ineffective because it doesn't support teachers during the most difficult stage of the learning curve: implementation. Needs to be on-going & occur over time. #txed
A3: Teachers learning from each other! Campus Learning walks in areas that you CHOOSE to personally improve in! @carrieyanta brainchild! #personalized#txed
I experienced this myself and hear it so often! We learn so much when we are helping others, which is why I would love to try to implement a pineapple chart model or something similar that would be a mix of observations & coaching #txed
A2: once I moved out of the classroom, I saw and learned so much more about teaching. I would be a better teacher today than I was. There is always something to improve upon and it comes back to #KidsDeserveIt#TXed
#txed A3: For me, nothing beats reading a book and bouncing ideas and strategies off of another growing professional. We're in it together, so there's a fantastic level of accountability, too.
Yes! This is an idea I'd like to bring to my campus next year, ongoing observations... there's a cute name for it I wrote in my notes from @great_educators yesterday! Will be blogging my take-aways soon! #txed
For sure! I need to get back with my Ts once we finish the training to make sure they give it a shot. It always sounds great in the training, then we wake up the next morning and can't find the time. #txed
Q4: [Scenario] A teacher just told you, "I'm done with education, I can't do it anymore...." How can we help this educator grow professionally and start to love his/her career again? #TXed
A3: Learning from those in the trenches who are doing great things. Visiting great schools and seeing researched based techniques working with “those” Ss. That changes mindset real fast. #TXed
#TXed A3: I really like our Brenham U PD we offer before school starts in August. Everyone gets to choose the PD they would like to attend and are also given the opportunity to present! The best of both worlds!
A3: Hands on application relevant to specific needs. Don't teach me how to be an interactive, relevant and engaged teacher by lecturing for 6 hours. Also PLEASE DO NOT READ ME A POWER POINT #txed
#txed A4: If we're honest, I think at SOME point we've wanted to wash our hands of this calling. It's important to remember the why, and help others to do the same.
A4: True story: I got that very email from a counseling colleague THIS week. I suggested self-care and shared some #mindfulness ideas. Sent this picture; it helps me when life threatens to overwhelm. If we stay in the moment, calm tends to follow. #txed
A4- help them reconnect w/their “why”. When you lose your way you have to remember why you started down that path to begin with. & honestly, we have to respect when Ts are ready to bow out gracefully. It takes GUTS to change careers & try something new! #txed
Q4: [Scenario] A teacher just told you, "I'm done with education, I can't do it anymore...." How can we help this educator grow professionally and start to love his/her career again? #TXed
A4: I encourage teachers to join Twitter and Instagram and find teachers they are inspired by. Seeing others "in the real world" takes that perfect teacher stigma away. #txed
A3: I believe that mentoring relationships can really help educators grow. Getting to know someone really well, modeling seeking out growth and talking about how to apply new learning together is powerful #txed
A3: I think something we have to keep in mind is that nobody learns the same, so everyone could have a different answer for this. Also, if we find something we like, it doesn't mean we should stop trying other ways. There may be something better out there. #txed
A4: I think starting with asking them why they got into teaching & then asking them questions about the successes they have had from there b4 focusing on what is causing them to not enjoy it anymore. #txed
Q4: [Scenario] A teacher just told you, "I'm done with education, I can't do it anymore...." How can we help this educator grow professionally and start to love his/her career again? #TXed
A4 Great question! I know a couple of Ts that are just biding their time until retirement! Would love to find a way to help them rediscover their passion! Twitter helped do it for me, but so many are resistant to Twitter. Would love to find another path for them! #txed
Q4: [Scenario] A teacher just told you, "I'm done with education, I can't do it anymore...." How can we help this educator grow professionally and start to love his/her career again? #TXed
A3: Hands on application relevant to specific needs. Don't teach me how to be an interactive, relevant and engaged teacher by lecturing for 6 hours. Also PLEASE DO NOT READ ME A POWER POINT #txed
A4: Help remind them WHY they got into it in the first place. I still have a “good news note” box that on “roughy days” I pull out and read things that I have done right and that people took the time to write and thank me! #whatsyourWHY#toughpeolenottimeslast#txed
#txed A4: If we're honest, I think at SOME point we've wanted to wash our hands of this calling. It's important to remember the why, and help others to do the same.
A4: ok. I understand that you have a wealth of knowledge
in ...I'd live to learn from you.
- - then you share ur "new" knowledge with them in little droplets. Then, ask if they'd like to continue learning as partners about xyz.
#teamwork#txed
A4: I think we have to figure out why. Ts become Ts because they want to impact kids. We’ve got to find that spark for them again and have them focus on that. That will lead to growth and idea churning. #Txed
Even though there's no one best model, I think teachers should experience all models so they can see how different models are best for their students. #txed
A4: I encourage teachers to join Twitter and Instagram and find teachers they are inspired by. Seeing others "in the real world" takes that perfect teacher stigma away. #txed
A4: @pinkpatterson is the one to answer this Q. She takes her teachers up from MS to JH so the Ts can visit former Ss. This is great to let them see the impact they have had. It also inspires Ss because they know those Ts care. #txed
A4: How can I help you get the fire back? Do you need a good book? What part(s) can't you do? Tell me 3 success stories across your career. Let's talk about this over chips and salsa. #txed
Honestly, I've see the biggest success with teacher retention when you really find out WHY they are so discouraged. Educators just switching to another grade level is where I've seen the BIGGEST success and growth! Find your WHY, and your true "Happy Grade". #txed
Q5: The idea of being a "lifelong learner" is a very important life and educational philosophy in regards to growth. How can we bestow this upon our students? #TXed
It's done AMAZING things for my year! I'd add a level of finding a few amazing Twitter chats (like @TXEDMod)! That's where the #PLN has changed my whole career. This has been my best year as a curriculum leader by far, and I def know my Twitter PLN is one reason for that. #TxEd
A1: with how much continually changes especially in education and how even in social studies (today’s present is tomorrow’s history) continuing education as an educator allows us to stay up to date and not become stagnant. #TXed
Q1: Tonight we'll be discussing how to continually "GROW" as an educator. Why is it important to recognize the fact that you should continually grow as an educator over the course of your career? #TXed
Yeah! (I should have realized you were going to already be there) lol... especially after creating and sending out those presenter badges. lol So many names! Can't wait to connect with you at #txgoo18!!!!! #txedhttps://t.co/HjxTe1o5Nq
Q5: The idea of being a "lifelong learner" is a very important life and educational philosophy in regards to growth. How can we bestow this upon our students? #TXed
A4 This is literally my passion and goal in life! I have a heart for healing teachers remember their why. Reflective questioning, pointing out positives, asking, “How did you get started in education,” pointing out positives, and then pointing out some more positives. #TXed
A2: my students continue to teach me more and more every day. Just because I went to school and have a degree doesn’t mean that I just stop learning. #TXED
Q2: John Wooden once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." How does this relate to the preconceived notion, of some, that they are done learning and have no more room to GROW? #TXed
A5: We have to model lifelong learning for our students. Talk about what we want to learn and how we are learning and growing ourselves. Share what we are reading about and how we work to be better teachers. #txed
I agree Tom. Anyone can get in a funk doing the same thing over and over. A change of scenery (curriculum) can really inspire some and rejuvinate. #txed
A5: I’m open with my kids that I am NOT a reader and I don’t read for enjoyment.....except EDU books! At the end of readers workshop, I get one of my books out and read with them. Then we share a 10 sec snip of what we read and what it means for us. #modelwhatyouwanttosee#txed
I see this a lot when Ss calculate the lowest grade they need to pass for the semester. We owe them so much more than that, and have to do whatever we can to find the value in learning #txed
Q5: The idea of being a "lifelong learner" is a very important life and educational philosophy in regards to growth. How can we bestow this upon our students? #TXed
A5: Model lifelong learning, then empower them to follow suit. Give them ownership in their learning and voice and choice whenever possible. Be passionate about growing and share that enthusiasm with them. #txed
A5: I think this is much like any other “subject” in that you have to show it so it’s real. Like reading with your class (in addition to them) then talking about what you read. Model it! #txed
#txed A4: Start by listening to the person. Sometimes people just need someone to listen to them, someone who can relate to them, someone who will encourage them. Maybe take something off their plate, and help them to remember their "Why"
A5: The best model lesson you can do for students is one where your passion and inquiry is on display. You can't fake that. They know and they're motivated to show you what they love in return. After all, we're humans, connection is within us. #txed
It's done AMAZING things for my year! I'd add a level of finding a few amazing Twitter chats (like @TXEDMod)! That's where the #PLN has changed my whole career. This has been my best year as a curriculum leader by far, and I def know my Twitter PLN is one reason for that. #TxEd
Q5: The best way to show someone how important something is; is to be an example of how being a lifelong learner can be so life changing and important #TXed
A5: MODEL, MODEL, MODEL! Show them that you are in this too! Show them that you are continually growing in your craft too! It's ok to tell them you don't know something, or you have to look something up... (that's showing growth) #txed
A3: don’t have me in the same PD every time. This is stagnation and causes teachers to tune out. Include new ways of doing things, allow us to connect to growing technology that our students are using daily (#Interact2018). Hands on training keeps us up to date. #TXed
I post a copy of the cover of the books I am currently reading beside my classroom door. I know the Ss notice because they have asked me questions about them! #txed
A5 I think sharing your passion for learning, showing them it's fun, admitting there is always something to learn, and modeling that is great! I love when they teach ME! #txed
A5: Who wants to learn how to dance? Then I'd show a clip of retired folks learning to square dance or whatever dance move - with a discussion if who k es how to break-dance as a baby. ~ we learn, evolve, & adapt. #txed
A5- being transparent, almost like we are in “think-alouds”. Help them understand what it means. Share your journey with Ss. & challenge them to learn something new about one o/their passions. #txed
Q5: The idea of being a "lifelong learner" is a very important life and educational philosophy in regards to growth. How can we bestow this upon our students? #TXed
I used to love (when I was in the classroom) when we talked about what the Ss wanted to learn more about...what inspired them. I would find a few to learn along with them. #txed
A4: invite students to show them how they, the teacher, matters. So many times we become frustrated that we no longer matter and that we are just a faceless automaton. When we see the results it can help reignite the passion! #TXed
Q4: [Scenario] A teacher just told you, "I'm done with education, I can't do it anymore...." How can we help this educator grow professionally and start to love his/her career again? #TXed
A5- I think it also directly connects with taking risks, & learning from failures & mistakes. Learning is messy. Lifelong learning is even messier. Show them that it’s ok!! #txed
Q5: The idea of being a "lifelong learner" is a very important life and educational philosophy in regards to growth. How can we bestow this upon our students? #TXed
Q6: Reflecting on the ways that you have grown as an educator over the past couple of years, what has been the single most impactful thing attributed to your growth and success? (What is your secret?) #TXed
Agreed! "Social media" sometimes has a negative connotation when used in other ways (platforms) but the way the education field has grabbed Twitter and created connections is just brilliant and life-changing. #TxEd
A5: Remind students of all the things they can now do bc they stuck with it & inspire their
confidence that no matter how complicated or difficult a new assignment is they can handle it if
they apply themselves. #txed
Q6: Reflecting on the ways that you have grown as an educator over the past couple of years, what has been the single most impactful thing attributed to your growth and success? (What is your secret?) #TXed
A5. Model your learning. Technology is hard for me and I admit it. We work through it together and I point out that I am learning. I show perseverance and we try new things together. @NormaTorres64#txed
I post a copy of the cover of the books I am currently reading beside my classroom door. I know the Ss notice because they have asked me questions about them! #txed
A6: Focusing on the Ss. They will tell you how to be better if you listen and observe. That helped me open up to receive PD like never before. #KidsDeserveIt#TxEd
A6- I have a village o/mentors. It’s takes a village to raise a child AND to raise a leader. I would NOT be who or where I am today without them. They are honest, they push me, & they call me out on the carpet w/o hesitation - & I ❤️ them for it!! #txed
Q6: Reflecting on the ways that you have grown as an educator over the past couple of years, what has been the single most impactful thing attributed to your growth and success? (What is your secret?) #TXed
A6: my principal and superintendent. They really push teachers to take back their autonomy and to seek out ideas outside of the district and bring them back to the district. It makes me WANT to go and get info knowing that it is encouraged. @MillerES_Leader@waldripm#txed
A5: model the best example. Tell students that you are continuing to learn from them even as you are teaching them. Share with them the success you have been able to master as you continue your journey upwards and onwards. #TXed
Q5: The idea of being a "lifelong learner" is a very important life and educational philosophy in regards to growth. How can we bestow this upon our students? #TXed
A6: Relationships is at the top of the list. Also learning to see all sides before drawing conclusions has helped as well. Listening. Listening, listening, listening and then more listening. #TxEd
A6: I think what keeps me growing is my willingness to try new things, take risks, play. That is what makes learning fun, for me and for my students. I've gotten better at letting us play together so we can fail, change, learn & grow side by side at any age! #txed
A6: ❤️ how I've grown in my PLN - I feel more connected to like-minded folks who support and encourage my growth as an educator. Secret is Twitter! #txed
A6: Honestly, the most impactful thing attributed to my growth and success as an educator has been building RELATIONSHIPS w/ my collegues and #pln. I wouldn't be in the position I am today w/o @PrincipalOgg , @edtechchic, @edtech2love, @EdTxAnn, @Twitter and many others!
#TXed
A6: my district has an amazing CITS department. Learning about new ways of using our technology and how best to incorporate it into my students learning has been them most impactful for my students receiving the best! @nodooley@danperez4ed@pwagnerlcisd@devineteacher#TXed
Q6: Reflecting on the ways that you have grown as an educator over the past couple of years, what has been the single most impactful thing attributed to your growth and success? (What is your secret?) #TXed
These littles had so much fun while learning on their Google Expedition to American Monuments! Our 1st outing with our new kits. Can’t wait to use them again #gafe4littles#gttribe#TxEd
Q6: Secret: Network (oh hey Insta and Twitter!). Connect. Be wrong. Preserve. Get inspired. Take on the challenge. Jump in head first. Be confident. Set goals. You do you. #txed
A6. A twitter book study on Growth Mindset and the belief in my own abilities, backed by the support of admin on my campus.@susanjparkskat1@jnoeldner@sgrinnel . #txed
A6: Realizing that as a leader I was able to be effective not because of title, power or authority but because of my ability to empower others through purposeful and meaningful relationships. #txed
Q6: Reflecting on the ways that you have grown as an educator over the past couple of years, what has been the single most impactful thing attributed to your growth and success? (What is your secret?) #TXed
@TXEDMod A6: Build relationships. Network (oh hey Insta and Twitter!). Connect. Be wrong. Persevere. Get inspired. Take on the challenge. Jump in head first. Be confident. Set goals. You do you. #txed
What does lifelong learning & growth mindset look like?? Read these personal connections I’m reflecting on today! This is an example of lifelong learning beyond school! I’m honored to serve & witness this daily with kids as a teacher @GCISD@HESRegalEagle#TxEd#WeAreHES#serve
