Kyle in Reno, last time I did homework... does assignments for online grad classes count? Sometimes they are graded, sometimes they aren't #nvedchat

Snehal from Nevada. The last homework I had was in my master's class. It was a long paper on organizational challenges. I got an A so I was happy. #NVedchat

Good evening. I'm Melissa in Las Vegas. The last time I did homework was this summer for a conference. Luckily it wasn't graded! (But I did do it) #NVedchat

A1-For my AP Government students I do a vocabulary assignment. I think it's effective because it's not just a simple definition but they also have to do examples, pictures and what it isn't #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Sep 24 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1: Gave my students a @flipgrid topic for a reflection on the Renaissance before an assessment. It was designed to make students think about their learning in preparation for the assessment. I feel that it did it's job #nvedchat

A1-I gave some teachers an assignment in a PD class. Only half turned it in. Needed to be more engaging...in my opinion. #NVedchat
  • MissParkSES Sep 24 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A1 For my 4th graders, I ask for 20 minutes of reading at home, go on zearn if you want, and then be a kid! In the past there was more (use question prompts to write about your book) but it was too unfair for busy students, students lacking support at home, etc. #nvedchat
  • thedullguy Sep 24 @ 10:09 PM EDT
R1: Several members of the math department at my school moved to a flipped instruction model last year. I joined them at semester break in an effort to give my students more opportunities to work w/each other & w/me on the practice set. After ~ a year, so far so good. #NVEdChat

  • NewExploraLara Sep 24 @ 10:11 PM EDT
A1- As a future teacher, I haven't given any homework yet. However, I am an early childhood major, so I don't believe homework will be part of my classroom. I would rather implement learning at home opportunities students can complete with their parents. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:11 PM EDT

  • MissParkSES Sep 24 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2 The closest I've gotten is sending a message via remind as a discussion prompt for families so they can talk about specific learning going on in class. It's great for students who go home and just say that the day was "good"; now there's an opening for parents #nvedchat
  • Carolinchen24 Sep 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A2: I really like the idea of students giving feedback in addition to receiving it. This is a great chance to reflect not only on their own work, but also on the work of other students. #NVedchat

  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A2-Too often we think that homework should be repetition or pen/pencil and paper. I love these ideas. Used videos and collaboration as homework instead of memorization worksheets, etc... #NVedchat
  • MaggieJCox Sep 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A1 Maggie from #Lasvegas jumping in late. I think most research has indicated that homework does not work well, as it usually occurs to far from original lesson to be effective. As long as Ss use time wisely in class to work on projects they should not have too much #NVEdChat
  • oznorot Sep 24 @ 10:15 PM EDT
A1) I am a pre-service educator, I have never assigned any homework for a class but I do plan on doing homework assignments a little differently than the traditional book and page number style #Nvedchat

A2: My co-teacher and I have been trying to avoid homework, making it more optional. Examples include the sets of student-created "flashcards" in @quizlet and links to videos related to our units of study #nvedchat
  • oznorot Sep 24 @ 10:17 PM EDT
In high school, it was sort of okay in reinforcing skills that we discussed in class but in college, I feel as though it is more hit and mess. The quality has been all over the place. I do still like homework though as it actually makes me study and want to learn more #Nvedchat

A3-In most of my classes I try to assign as little as possible, usually it's just to finish up if they haven't utilized class time wisely. I know that they are busy and have 7 other classes to worry about. #nvedchat
  • NewExploraLara Sep 24 @ 10:18 PM EDT
a2- I think flipping homework in an early childhood setting might be difficult. I'm struggling to conceptualize it. #NVedchat
  • MaggieJCox Sep 24 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A2 I love when I can incorporate “peer grading” activities so students explain discuss, make recommendations, and corrections before I grade #NVEdChat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:18 PM EDT
Do you think that homework can be demotivating for some students? #nvedchat What makes you different?
    In reply to @oznorot, @UofOklahoma
  • AndersonEdTech Sep 24 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A3: If you provide some choices for students, you provide opportunity for all students to learn from the activities. For example, my @flipgrid activity wasn't something some students could do at home, so I gave them an opportunity to write reflections rather than record #NVedchat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:20 PM EDT
For EC, flipping could be short videos that you have parents watch with kids or even a book you send home.. and then spend time in class doing the creative stuff.. drawing pictures about it etc.. #nvedchat flipping is not always video.

  • Carolinchen24 Sep 24 @ 10:21 PM EDT
A3: One can add a range of tasks to choose from in addition to the obligatory homework. There is also the possibility to give students the freedom on how to work on the exercise (e.g. choosing the method) #NVedchat

A2: I would like to have a constructivist classroom where students learn more from each other through peer interaction rather than the instructor. I love the idea of a HW assignment where students record videos to explain a topic/concept to show their grasp of an idea #nvedchat
  • MaggieJCox Sep 24 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A3 hard to make all things equitable, considering different circumstances at home but that is why I offer class time to work, so I can get one on one time with students that need extract time or help, often some extra credit steps are included for extra challenge #NVedchat
  • Carolinchen24 Sep 24 @ 10:23 PM EDT
I totally agree because this is a great way for students to reflect on the task #NVedchat

a3- I hope to provide a list of opportunities that are realistic and accessible for every student. Such as going for a walk with a caregiver and reading street signs, practicing writing letters with water and a paintbrush on the cement. #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:24 PM EDT
Final Questions... Q4-If we still give #homework, then how can we ensure it doesn't reduce students' love of learning? #NVedchat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:24 PM EDT
a3) Schools that provide before and after school open time help to even the playing field.. but can still feel like detention. #nvedchat
  • Ms_Ackerman Sep 24 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A4-By ensuring that it is something relevant for the students and not just busy work. If you can tie it to their lives it makes it more impactful #nvedchat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:25 PM EDT
a4.. Don't assign stuff just to assign stuff.. busy work is no one's friend. #nvedchat
  • Carolinchen24 Sep 24 @ 10:26 PM EDT
A4: Giving the students choices so that the task is more likely to fit their way of learning #NVedchat
    In reply to @NevadaEdChat
  • NewExploraLara Sep 24 @ 10:26 PM EDT
A4- differentiate homework! Have many options that students can choose from that fit their interests. Make sure homework is meaningful, not just a workbook page or 50 problems from a textbook. #NVedchat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:26 PM EDT
#nvedchat That is a great way to look at it!!
    • magdalene_r_s Sep 24 @ 10:25 PM EDT
I try not to give homework because too often it's extra disadvantage to specific students - plus on hw I can't help and a student may be practicing mistakes over and over which may be hard to correct
  • NewExploraLara Sep 24 @ 10:26 PM EDT
    I agree completely! #NVedchat

  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:26 PM EDT
    A4-First rule of #Homework Club... 1-We don't call it homework 2-Make it engaging 3-We don't call it homework 4-Make it relevant 5-We don't call it homework 6-Avoid repetition/worksheets 7-We don't call it homework 8-Figure out a different way instead of homework... #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Sep 24 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A4: It has to have meaning, it cannot be super long, and you must provide feedback on it. Giving homework for homework's sake will kill love of learning quickly #nvedchat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:27 PM EDT
Can you talk about Homework club? #nvedchat
    In reply to @Snehalstocks

A4 I think it has to be a task with topic of their choosing with a long, maybe 2-4 weeks, time frame for individual research. Enough time for them to answer a couple questions, & create more, then they are learning, want to learn with out being told they have homework #NVEdChat
  • oznorot Sep 24 @ 10:31 PM EDT
Q3: I observed with a teacher during a field experience who allowed students who did not have internet access to do their homework in class towards the end of the period(he taught double blocks) and he also only assigned homework for the week instead of daily #Nvedchat
  • DrTerriC - Moderator Sep 24 @ 10:31 PM EDT
It is funny that good PD is not considered homework.. maybe we need to think about homework only including community. #nvedchat

Interesting article was shared by my school principal last week about how we shouldn't be calling so many things in school "work" maybe we should replace with "learning" It shouldn't be work, they're learning not being paid to do menial tasks #nvedchat

I agree it’s critical we don’t call it homework, my son “hated reading” until he went to a school with a no homework policy, now he reads like crazy. They are doing a 40 book challenge, have the whole year to complete it #NVEdChat
