A1. We should be empowering our girls with will, grit, and determination. However it has to be a society movement! Sexism is a real thing, even today. As a parent to a daughter, I want her to know that glass ceilings can be SMASHED when your passion is being chased #EduGladiators
A1: I think it is their responsibility but I think society needs to eliminate the unfair barriers to their success. Make the playing field equal and then let the person be judged on their merits. #edugladiators
A1) Everyone in the community of that woman. As a middle school teacher I hope to empower the young women in my classroom as leaders. As a father to a little girl I want to support her in her dreams to be successful and help empower her to lead #EduGladiators
A1: We have to lift each other up! I come from a long line of badass surviving and thriving women who literally blazed trails. My mom never let me forget it. Lying down next the to trail was never an option. #edugladiators
A1 it is everyone’s job to uplift everyone, not just women. Less competition and more working together. None of us can do this on our own and we always benefit from support. #edugladiators
A1: It is our responsibility and duty to reach back to help others as someone did for us & if we never needed the help we should recognize the challenges that others face and be that merchant of hope. #edugladiators
A1 all educators! We have to think of how we communicate and engage girls in convos about science and stem and math due to the negative perception out there about girls in those fields! #edugladiators
#EduGladiators A1 It is ALL of our responsibility to ensure that girls and women believe in themselves and opt to participate in anything they choose to!
A1. The responsibility for uplift belongs to all-especially those who have been uplifted by others. Very few people who have “made it” did it all on their own. Somewhere along the way somebody helped them, coached them, pushed them, encouraged them. Give back. #EduGladiators
A1: Working in a school of newcomer immigrant students, some parents can't conceive of their girls going to college. Age 18 means marraige. We respect their cultures but also need to introduce other possibilities to them. #EduGladiators
A1: It is everyone's responsibility to see people for who he or she is and what they have to offer. As a male in elementary, it has always shocked me to see gender bias in the work place still exists. #EduGladiators
A1 As educators, we have the ability to inspire our female Ss & expose them to different career opportunities, hold them to high standards & expectations, & discuss some of the challenges they will encounter! We can groom our girls for success! #EduGladiators
From personal experience I have women in my life who were in leadership positions invest in me which gave me the courage to be more than I thought I could. Now I try to return that favor. #edugladiators
A1 It is a responsibility shared by all- men and women across age, ethnicity, and race. There must intentionality to nurture and mentor women and create leadership opps for us to thrive. As Latina, I hold dear to “lift as I climb, fostering the next gen of leaders. #EduGladiators
A1: Interesting question. Wonder if I am qualified to answer. Wonder where I fit. As a teacher, I am not sure I intentionally uplift the young ladies in my class any more than the young gentlemen. So maybe for me it’s about ensuring equity by uplifting all???? #edugladiators
A1 I'm here because of SOOO many fierce female mentors and encouragers.Yes, I want to pay it forward. It's my responsibility as a first gen Latina (hope you like my Q1! :)) #EduGladiatorshttps://t.co/yc32VaUp22
A1: Leadership is about leading with equity for all. Typically girls of STEM and CTE are underrepresented. It is our obligation to lead ANY underrepresented group and serve that need with equity not equality! #edugladiators#LetStudentsSpeak
#EduGladiators A1: It is everyone's responsibility! However, we should especially hold accountable those who are in positions of power whose imperative it is to do so. Accountability breeds response-ability.
Totally agree Brent! Women are just as capable as men to lead successfully but diviseur must remove barriers! Starting families is a huge obstacle for career women. It shouldn’t be. #EduGladiators
A1 it is everyone’s job to uplift everyone, not just women. Less competition and more working together. None of us can do this on our own and we always benefit from support. #edugladiators
A1 ❤️ the preface to this Q! It’s everyone’s responsibility...i take MY responsibility seriously and strive to lift other women up whenever I can! #EduGladiators
A1. “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” -Desmond Tutu
This is why we reach back, reach across, walk with, reach out, and invite others to share the journey with us.
#EduGladiators
A2) Unfortunately, Women have heard it all. These statements should not be part of the conversation when it comes to #WomenInLeadership.
Not Then, Not Now, Not Ever!!!
#EduGladiators
A1: nobody does a better job of helping other women ride up, than other women. We have to band together and recognize those around us who may be interested but deserve opportunities #EduGladiators
Great reflection. I definitely appreciate your thoughts. I think that as a classroom leader you definitely are qualified because you have a major role in uplifting young ladies! #EduGladiators
A1. Everyone has to. I read a study that said that when women do well in a country, that country prospers. So I assume similar results for education. #EduGladiators
Yes, and equity is about doing what's needed and appropriate. At my school, many of the girls are thriving more than the boys. Equity is about seeing who needs support and providing it. #edugladiators
A1) Everyone should hold responsibility. With the changes to learning environments I see young women taking on greater responsibility to self-determine, self-advocate & break more barriers. #EduGladiators
A1: The responsibility to uplift & create opportunities for women rests upon each & every one of US...EVERYONE. We, as #Educators, carry a heavier responsibility b/c our jobs entail fighting for #Equity across all levels. We need to empower women on their journeys!
#EduGladiators
I also believe we should never champion one group at the expense of others. Mentor the potential you see in those around you independently of demographics. #EduGladiators
A2. Current political rhetoric/belief may cause women to doubt their worth & ability to not just be successful, but to simply MATTER in our country. This dialog also creates opportunity for women to step up, come together & change the narrative of our impact! #EduGladiators
A1 all educators! We have to think of how we communicate and engage girls in convos about science and stem and math due to the negative perception out there about girls in those fields! #edugladiators
A2: It is heart-wrenching to hear the stories of abuse women have endured, but am so thankful that the abuse is getting exposure that has the potential to lessen it. #EduGladiators
A2: It's amazing to see how far women's rights have come. We have always been able to do anything a man can do - but now we actually have opportunities.
The worst- we are still looked at as the weaker force. It's sickening. Plus, the harassments now. #EduGladiators
A1) w my k-1 classes I have noticed leadership roles are far less discriminatory than older groups. It is more about influence and compatibility. We are all responsible for nurturing a view of others based on interaction over preformed bias. #EduGladiators
Exactly! One students was convinced she'd be married right after high school but is now a junior in college with a boyfriend. Yet still respecting her family's traditions. #edugladiators
A1. And I believe that every time we make a conscious effort to uplift our fellow man, we too are uplifted in the process. Our destiny is a partial by product of how we treat others. Also known as karma. 😉 #EduGladiators
A2: Because of what is going on around us, we are able to filter out those who are not on the same page and support those who are! The lines are becoming less blurred and our lives more intertwined through similar stories #EduGladiators
A1: Although we all have the responsibility to seek and nourish potential, women to women we understand our victories, unique needs, struggles & at times lack of opportunities. It amazing to be a woman & to have a tribe of women behind you. #EduGladiators
A1: YES! As a first gen myself, I LOVE this!!
We have to be intentional to create opportunities for women and girls. To do this, I ask them who are you? and I tell them I believe in them. We all need a champion. #edugladiators
Allyson Apsey, jumping in to #EduGladiators for a bit to learn from some of my fav educational leaders ❤️ I am an elementary principal from MI and author of upcoming book The Path to Serendipity #path2serendipity
A1 We as educators need to encourage all to participate some of that involves enlightening our students on opportunities they may not feel are for them, create risk takers and the environment for this #EduGladiators
Yes, and equity is about doing what's needed and appropriate. At my school, many of the girls are thriving more than the boys. Equity is about seeing who needs support and providing it. #edugladiators
A2. Raising a daughter in high school has been a great lens for me to use during these conversations. It has highlighted what is good and broken in our society and allowed me to have some powerful conversations with her. Which I hope lead to her empowerment. #edugladiators
A2 There is some current political rhetoric that doesn’t acknowledge barriers exist for marginalized groups, including women. If we don’t know acknowledge systemic inequity, it becomes so much harder to creates pathways to create more equal opportunities. #EduGladiators
A2 the current rhetoric in US politics belongs in a previous century. The good thing about it is that it’s lit fires under every female and male that cares about equality and respect for all. Don’t mess with that. #EduGladiators
A2) I think there’s a trend now where women are feeling more empowered which is a good thing. When other women speak up that’s an example for our younger generation to step in and lead as well #EduGladiators
A2) Worst b/ c there seems to be a flare up of hate/intolerance/racism, https://t.co/s2xh9tXJcf b/c it motivates us to stop being complacent, & realize the good fight is NOT over. #edugladiators
A2. I find it disappointing that the need for this conversation still exist. Yet, I am moved by the courage and bravery of so many who speak out and speak up. It is so liberating to demonstrate what you believe in and do it with pride. #EduGladiators
One of the most important work we will ever do is recognize and nourish potential. I’m grateful for those who patiently helped me nourish mine until I was ready to run on my own! #EduGladiators
A2: Unfortunate events draw the spotlight. Those strongest use the spotlight to make change. These are dark times, people are speaking up and calling out bias and inequity everywhere. Maybe this is creating the light that draws everyone else out from under?? #EduGladiators
Can’t agree more, Rosa. It’s forced me out of silence and complicity in the classroom. I’ve moved from behind-the-scenes advocate to vocal activist-in-training. #EduGladiators
A2: My dad recently told me it is a great time to be a woman. I am grateful for the men and women in my life who have taught me that I can do anything. It is both equality and equity that lifts us up. #edugladiators
A2: It is horrible because it is demeaning and could be demoralizing. It is the best thing because women are pissed off. We will rise like we've never risen, and our daughters and sons are coming for the ride. #edugladiators
A2:Worst—women have to endure the pain of revealing their suffering and pain to get too many idiots to pay attention. Best—women’s endurance and triumphs inspire and empower our young women to live into the spaces that those who are in front are creating for them. #edugladiators
A2) Worst because it runs the risk of becoming white noise. Best because the potential for change is real. In a system that has become dysfunctional with opposition people are beginning to come together in ways we might not have expected. #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A1: Not only do we need to change the narrative but also results & build a pipeline of women leaders. Even though the majority of Ts are women, very few account for Superintendents or Secondary Principals.
A2. Our identity and potential are not relegated to our gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexuality, or anything else. The one common thing every human has is a heart. That’s how I know we’re more alike than different. Issues of difference are issues of the ❤️ #EduGladiators
A2:The current political rhetoric negatively impacts the struggle for equal rights/equity today b/c it has unveiled the true colors of what has seemed an undercurrent in society. In times before, it was politically incorrect to be a racist/sexist/misogynistic pig
#EduGladiators
A3. The women on my leadership team are smart and creative but most of all they are compassionate. They seek to break down the barriers that exist for working women so not to lose the value they add to our organization. #edugladiators
I am so humbled by those who took time and patience to mentor me. Their commitment to my personal and professional growth was amazing- they saw potential before I could! #edugladiators
A3) Providing leadership opportunities for girls in elementary, middle and high school will help them practice the skills they need as adults to lead effectively. #EduGladiators
A2: It saddens me that the struggles my mother & other generations fought for on equity haven’t been completely won. However the conversations have been powerful & I have hope that it will be better for my daughters. In my realm of influence I will make it happen. #EduGladiators
A2. My mom is my best example. She is unconditional love, compassionate, hard working, honest, relational, morally upstanding, kind, brave, determined, and fearless. #EduGladiators
A3: Successful women ed leaders can bring out the greatness in both men and women and create teams that collaborate rather than compete. #EduGladiators
A3:
Compassion
Courage
Confidence
Cultivate leadership and voice
Ability to listen well
Know who they are.
Growth minded
We teach them to THRIVE.
#EduGladiators
A2:The current political rhetoric positively impacts the struggle for equal rights/equity today b/c it has awoken us &pulled many people out of a sense of political complacency. WE just need to coordinate & activate ourselves to work TOGETHER for a better tomorrow!
#EduGladiators
A3 Brave, risk takers, doers, visionaries, vulnerable, compassionate listeners.
We have an empowerment group for our girls in upper grades and teach those characteristics. As principal, I work to live those behaviors every day. #edugladiatorshttps://t.co/Wbfe6yWttZ
A2. My mom is my best example. She is unconditional love, compassionate, hard working, honest, relational, morally upstanding, kind, brave, determined, and fearless. #EduGladiators
A3 this is The Best question!! We need to let our Ss practice the skills of listening!!!!, understanding other perspectives, finding things to believe in, and standing up for their core values. #EduGladiators
A4) I do not think my daughters can be leaders, I #EXPECT my daughters to be #LEADERS!!!
This mentality is applied to all of my students and women that I work with.
#EduGladiators#CondoleezzaRice
A3 Teach all how to understand the power they have within themselves and how to effectively communicate and educate others based on what they have learned and connections made #edugladiators
A3 Being absolutely committed to the work with a profound “why” that guides them. Desire to mentor and nurture others through high expectations and high levels of support. #EduGladiators
A4) I do not think my daughters can be leaders, I #EXPECT my daughters to be #LEADERS!!!
This mentality is applied to all of my students and women that I work with.
#EduGladiators#CondoleezzaRice
A3: Truthfully my best administrators (male or female) shared the same qualities. Compassion, caring and Brave Leadership. I know I am idealistic in this but I think kids need to see that good leadership is good leadership. #edugladiators

A2: good or bad politics women have continued to move forward. The difference today is that we have a strong platform to speak from and lots of ways to get the word out. #EduGladiators
A4 I have had some amazing mentors! Cyndi Farmer at my guest ever teaching job. Pat Canterbury who became a great friend. Unfortunately, they aren't on Twitter! #EduGladiators
A3 So much I could say. We are uniquely qualified bc we speak both “languages” so to speak. We’ve had to for survival. Teaching advocacy in the midst of opposition, and knowledge of their power is key. #EduGladiators
A3:All leaders must have vision and voice. Of the women leaders I have worked with, I have found them to be particularly strong in both, more than most of the men in similar positions. So, in my classroom I strive to help all my kids find themselves & their V & V. #edugladiators
A3 ~ Women in leadership must be intelligent, clear communicators, and compassionate! They must also keep Ss at the center of their decision making! Encouraging Ss to pursue rigorous course work & challenge their status quo... #EduGladiators
What an uplifting and inspiring conversation today! Thank you everyone for sharing! Special kudos to our West Coast warriors for waking up early to participate & support @RosaIsiah who was an amazing moderator!

A3: We must begin by removing patriarchal language and practices, and it is more challenging that you may think. Get rid of literal gender lines. Don't address students as "guys", check to see what other social norms need to ditched. #edugladiators
A3) Resilience and flexibility. My students that have the most "followers" are often the ones who can bounce back from a setback, or find another way to their destination. Sometimes a small reminder to look for another route is all it takes. #EduGladiators
A3: Courage, vision, the ability to build relationships & instill hope and perseverance in others, think critically and circumspectly, motivate, inspire, exemplify strong character are some key characteristics of successful women in Ed Leadership. #edugladiators
A4 My mom was one of the first women in her profession and I grew up watching her break through ceiling. But edu- the women in my PLN are everything I aspire to be- advocating for ALL children all the time! #admiremytribe#EduGladiators
A4. I’ve been mentored by so many but the biggest influence in my life is my@mother. She’s the smartest person I know and I’ve learned so much about leading for her. Wisdom is irreplaceable! #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A3: This is my Why👇🏼Serving as a role model to our young women, validating who they are, empowering them to realize their academic & personal potential, & exposing them to 👩🏽🎓They have also taught me a lot about resliency & making a difference no matter age.
A4: I have been mentored by strong females throughout my entire career. Good work comes from the individual. Each individual has given me insight into their practice and feedback on my own. #EduGladiators
A3: Leadership qualities are not gender specific. A good leader knows how to influence people through belief systems and not just buy in. A good leader nurtures relationships, is reflective & not afraid to roll up their sleeves and do the work themselves. #EduGladiators
My daughters have greatly helped me understand what I must do to help create a world 🌍 where they are empowered, and not held back because of the other’s insecurities and stereotypes around their abilities. #edugladiators
A3b) Boys can be more assertive in hand-raising and shouting out. Be aware of your response to that as you work to create equitable opporunities and create an empowering env. for all. #edugladiators
A4. I’ve been mentored by so many but the biggest influence in my life is my mother. She’s the smartest person I know and I’ve learned so much about leading from her. Wisdom is irreplaceable! #EduGladiators
Successful women in leadership reflect on their journey, value learning, build relationships, and make an intentional effort to be responsive to the needs of others. #EduGladiators
A4 I have had the great privilege of having amazing POC women mentors & leaders throughout the course of my tenure in education. Their encouragement, wisdom, & high expectations for me have had a great influence in my development. Grateful for their example! #EduGladiators
A3: The key qualities & characteristics of successful women in eduleadership are no different from those any educational leader holds. These include:
intelligence
confidence
moral code
sense of equity
voice
vision
positivity
empathy
care
passion for EDUC
& more
#EduGladiators
A4 From birth, my mother and all friends have always provided me with wisdom and mentorship. Countless others in each life phase have pointed to my potential. I strive to do that for my daughter, students, and colleagues. #EduGladiators
A3b: We teach and influence leadership skills by providing strong women leaders in our schools, by modeling what confidence is and most importantly by providing opportunities to lead with mentoring & support as they need. #EduGladiators
A3: the successful women that I have worked 4 were great motivators, good listeners, & would not let me stay in my comfort zone. Im currently trying to get the girls in our school intertested in STEM careers so they can fight for the jobs of the future. #EduGladiators
Before I go, I want to be sure all of the #EduGladiators know about my new book Burned Out, Beaten Up, Fighting Back: A Call To Action For America’s Public Educators! Check it out here: https://t.co/lhDjMZ9YWY#call2action4ed

A3. My mentor & the best principal I ever worked with is a women. She made a point to promote the fact that every human being has value & should be valued. Custodians, low ses kids, difficult parents, etc. she did this with action! #EduGladiators
A4: My mother has been the biggest influence on my life. She came from a fierce patriarchy but joined the women's movement from day one. I am grateful for her bravery and willingness to stand out to stand up. #edugladiators
#EduGladiators A4: This is me in the arms of a long generation of women (my mom, aunt, & great grandmother) who have raised me to pursue my dreams so that I can in turn help others reach theirs.
I love this question @RosaIsiah. I have a list and I plan to write personal notes to those who have helped me along the way. Thanks for a great chat! #edugladiators

A4: My mother and grandmother have been incredible examples of strength, unity & resilience. I am beyond blessed to have grown up in their time and space. The lesson they have taught me collectively are enduring. I only hope to be half the women they are! #EduGladiators
A4 I seek to reciprocate this by fostering potential in the women leaders and Ts I work with. Affirming what is and fostering the brilliance and potential I know is there! #EduGladiators
A1 I believe it’s our job as women to elevate women & girls. We must lead the charge & educate/engage others — b/c it takes all of us. We have shared perspectives, empathy, issues. We must guard against learned helplessness, expecting others to do it for us. #edugladiators
A3: We try to nurture these for our #newcomer Ss by building up their #SEL#SocialEmotionalLearning. We try to support their learning & transition to this country by helping them find their voices while maintaining a sense of self-confidence & love for learning
#EduGladiators
I love this question @RosaIsiah. I have a list and I plan to write personal notes to those who have helped me along the way. Thanks for a great chat! #edugladiators

A4) Being a male primary teacher, I frequently find myself surrounded by talented, intelligent, professional women. I seek their advice daily and in return I offer my own talents and experience. When I can, I share tech tips, songs, books, best practice, etc #EduGladiators
A1: It is OUR responsibility to uplift & create opportunity for girls in their education so they can in turn take on any challenge they choose #edugladiators
A4: 2 vball coaches pushed me by placing me in a leadership role even though I can be quiet. My1st employer helped me discover my strengths. 2 principals who supports(ed) my crazy ideas or picked me for a position that promoted growth. @EOgle_IISD@roccimalone#EduGladiators
We empower other women by sharing our testimonies, celebrating wins, and validating identity- using our voice to create spaces for women to thrive. #EduGladiators

Thanks #EduGladiators. This platform is still new to me but the discussions I've engaged in so far have already helped me reflect deeply and reinvigorate my passion for teaching.
A2: worst = giving “permission” for others to marginalize people different from themselves; best = fueling OUR fire to #Resist & take action #edugladiators

A3: My wife is a successful entrepreneur. Here are just some of her qualities that make her successful: empathetic, real, strong-willed, motivated, passionate, curious, generous, learner, innovative.. each and every girl has these qualities in them. Bring them out! #edugladiators
Great topic! When any group of educators experience injustice, we all experience it! We are all on the same team with the same mission! We need to celebrate everyone’s contributions. The job is too tough to do alone. #EduGladiators

A3: We must maintain a focus on relationships, building up and empowering our Ss, colleagues, friends, family. That is our job as humans. Being educators is a part of our "how". #edugladiators
A4: We are very proud of our daughter Chloé. She is strong, compassionate, and driven to be the best version of herself. She makes us want to be better. This takes a team effort: every member of our family has a role to play, as well as our community (school, ..) #edugladiators
