Craig McVay, Supt., El Reno is on board tonight.
Welcome to the wkly chat - tonight’s topic is “Hour of Code!” I’m your moderator for the chat!
The is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code & show that anybody can learn the basics.
For tonight’s chat, the abbreviation CS = Computer Science
excited to have you moderating tonights chat
We will use a question (Q) & answer (A) format. Use A1, A2, etc. to identify which question you’re answering.
We will start w/ introductions. Where are you from? What is your position?

Anyone in offer a coding class in middle school?
going to miss me moderating? Bummer!
I would love to teach one someday! That's my wheelhouse. :)
Exactly.... All this stupid crap we've made do is not good for education, so privates shouldn't do it.... but you do
My firsties did coding with the computer T...but I have a couple of intro to coding apps I need to introduce for centers
A1: He may be right, but we tend to see the world through our own experiences. He could be overgeneralizing a bit!
Debbie Hoffman, Cache PS. Listening & learning tonight!
awesome!!! Edmond is exploring ideas as we move forward. Would love to see what BA does.
A1: BUT, it could soon become a much more essential element of many different professions - like using a computer is today.
A1: I agree but I think we are 15 years behind as well
A1 I believe it. Several of my 3rd graders want to be a computer programmer/video maker when they "grow up". https://t.co/DyLCj6i5XM
A1) we will see major changes not sure I can predict the future. 3 years ago I had to have a 3D TV
A1 computers are here to stay...Ss need to be literate in them.
A1 Hmm...I might be out of a job or need some serious training
Good evening! Michelle McDonald, Curriculum Director, Woodward PS.
Hey Cathy gr 3 teacher & tech coach from the Canada. Popping in to share our school experience with
Drew price Putnam city instructional coach
I agree Anne! So many other countries are making coding a priority in schools! We are way behind in the US!
A1) I wouldn't be surprised honestly
John W from Clovis, CA. Edu researcher/consultant/grant writer
A1: Programming is creating and students should always be creating!
A1: The idea is sound, but there's an eggs / basket thing which comes to mind as well.
A1- Hard to argue with a mind like MZ in this field. Coding can begin very early in Ed. Experience.
Jimmy Hartford student teacher at OSU
A1: IMO we won't be teaching code, because by then someone will figure out out to make it idiot proof like they did w/ html
So great to have you Catherine! Look fwd to your thoughts on tonight's chat!
When I went to last spring and had this convo with some European presenters. They were shocked!
AA1: Nope sorry, unless we create a high stakes test to measure if kids are really learning it. Got to hold Ts accountable, you know
This is our first year with the program. I will talk to our CS T and get some info for you!
Read a FANTASTIC blog tonight!
Amy Presley, history at Broken Arrow High School
A1 Programming allows Ss to be creative and personalize their work. In turn, equates to more buy in.
Drew Robinson, instructional technology coach, Tulsa Public Schools...joining a bit late!
Glad I'm not the only one.
A1: He is probably right, except it will probably replace one or the other, which won't help. It should be available, not mandated.
A1: we need to offer for those interested but will not be necessary for all. Could def keep kids connected to Ed
I am a firm believer we need to be teaching innovation and creation
Q2a. If you participated in , are you new to CS OR were u already teaching computing?
I think he has a valid point. Coding is its own language and some Ss catch onto that Lang at an early age
Q2b. If you didn’t participate in , how can we encourage you to join next year? What supports do you need?
Kas Nelson, elementary principal from
A1: 28 years ago, I took a Computer Science class for a semester. We created games using code. I learned to type on a typewriter.
Priyank Patel MCHS student
A1 Big believer in teaching coding! The ability to stay w/ a problem and to use logic to solve that problem = good for all students!
Much appreciated! We have a Tech Lit class now, but I see it evolving in the near future.
A1: Maybe not exactly the same as reading and writing, some kids won't enjoy/excel but earlier is better for those that will.
A2 professional development to learn it ourselves
A1: spirit of it. We need to be looking forward to the world Ss will be entering, not the one of their birth
Just like read and writing? That means s's will have to pass Hs stakes to graduate.. Dunno if we will be there in 15yrs
A2 convinced whole school to participate right from k - 6, all 405 Ss did it this year.
A1: Its rev., Continues to change exponentially. problem solving w/ majority of work force requiring problem solving skils
A2a: I am just trying to figure out how to get my T's to participate in .
A2a&b: I'm not ing. I'm sure it has a purpse and place in choir, but I'm not sure.
A2: I did last year but didn't make time this year. I did take time to research wordpress features for my blog though.
A2a I have quite a few teachers participating in this year - it's exciting to see the kids really get into it!
A1: I think he's overstating the importance of coding. A bit much. But... it's still a good skill to know.
A2: If anyone needs info on bringing it to your classroom, attend the FREE workshops! They are a blast!
Q2b) I'm not even sure what is
We have to progress with the times. We can't keep teaching them how we were taught.
That's more than a 45 min conversation now isn't it . . .
A1: Programmers are the future middle class...it should be as fundamental as shop or math
Hey , Anthony from Stilly here!
We did this week. I also love the quote from Mark Z.
Oh thank god. You know in class when one kid finally raises their hand and asks... ;-) https://t.co/TUuPjGXn6d
Q2b) I'm not even sure what is
A2b Honestly, I don't know what we don't know. I need to know, though, so others can know. https://t.co/YIWUv90DkK
Q2b. If you didn’t participate in , how can we encourage you to join next year? What supports do you need?
A1: Many of my Ss didn't know what coding was, while some were teaching others and having discussions about how it was "too easy".
A1: I agree. Also think it's up 2 Ts & admin 2 actively seek new ways 2 push Ss to create & prepare 4 an unimaginable future world.
A1: To b more precise, importance of coding is currently rising, but at some point will fall.
A2b: I have no idea what you're talking about... Was it just for computer Ts? This is only the decoded time I've heard of it...
A2: Didn't do a good job of promoting or getting involved.
A?: The last coding I did involved a Dick Tracy secret spy ring and several comic books.
A2: I would like professional development about coding. I have ideas on how I could use it in my English classes. Create & innovate.
A2b S did it w/the computer T...but I would like to incorporate into class. Understanding steps in a process relates 2 many subjcts
The is a 1-hr intro to CS, designed to demystify code & show that anybody can learn the basics.
Not sure I agree. I think coding will change over time but as long as there is technology, someone has to code it!
A2: I've started teaching my boys at home, there are some great apps that help them get started!
Next year at OTA we need an "hour of code" session
A1- I asked a prominent CS prof what the hot thing will be in 15-20 years, and he said absolutely that it will be autonomous robotics
Q3 (If you participated) reflecting back on - What worked/what didn’t? What were outcomes? What do u wish was different?
A1 My friends learned to code in college: FORTRAN Code languages change rapidly. Teach skills that facilitate learning to code.
A2: a student taught me some coding through a trial run of genius hour I was able to do. I was impressed but felt very ignorant
Software is advancing to the point where innovators will no longer code; just select modules.
is an fun intro for students to the power of computer programming! It'll work in any class!
A2a: my school participated 4 the 2nd yr, but on larger scale. 1 entire class coded last yr, but most Elem did this yr.
I've heard picture coding is a good place to start with elem kids. Do you agree?
Not sure it is the coding that is important but the world it opens up for students
I'd be glad to head that up!
Oh! Definitely don't agree w/ that! Coding and creativity are linked. There will always be a drive to create something new!
Maybe the type of thinking it encourages has an even wider benefit? https://t.co/zafPXKFx94
Not sure it is the coding that is important but the world it opens up for students
A3 was lucky admin was supportive so was able to step into most classes to intro & talk to Ss about it.Total engagement
Q3. Reflecting back on - What worked & what didn’t? What were outcomes? What do u wish was different?
It sounds interesting, but I don't think there is time in my class. What do students program? Something educational?
A3: have not done an thing, but I would love to learn more and see what it could do for Ss.
Good evening! We're looking forward to hearing from everyone tonight. 😊
How did the Ss respond to
I'm no authority, but I'm under the impression the act itself is educational :-) https://t.co/pQDdYAwTG0
It sounds interesting, but I don't think there is time in my class. What do students program? Something educational?
lot of good apps that use block coding like puzzle pieces Ss link together
Sure, but I can create new things on the Web now w/o knowing code. Back in 1990? Probably not
what subject do you teach? And yes it's educational. Coding is a form of literacy. Logic & problem solving are req'd!
Educators must realize that most careers elementary students will pursue do not even exist today
Agree. The problem solving I can really get behind. Having trouble fitting with own content courses https://t.co/owQbB9eGG7
Not sure it is the coding that is important but the world it opens up for students
A3: Finding a diff cms besides Wordpress for my OU create page 😖
Yeah, but I like the idea of understanding the 'innards' even if the 'outards' evolve - if that makes sense https://t.co/VtBKiqc9qi
Educators must realize that most careers elementary students will pursue do not even exist today
Wonders why I was never taught coding.
Sure. But the ultimate power to create lies in coding it. Someone coded the thing you are creating with...
, Why is is popular. It gives Ss power to create. It is meaningful & relevant. Each S on diff level. There's no damn test.
had teachers tell me parents had written notes asking for more info about coding bc their child came home talking about it
Q4. What are you doing (or are you interested in doing) to follow up on ?
I teach high school English - an EOI subject. Aren't our Ss be getting this already in computer classes or something?
NO DAMN TEST! Exactly! LOL!
Sadly, a lot of them are low-paid workers from India. One offered to do project for me at $5/hour.
Not necessarily, depends on school. I think that writing an algorithm in coding is like writing an essay...
A4: Well...I'm participating in this chat about coding.
Its never too late to start!!!
The 'test' is 'did it work?' If not, what can I change? What did it do I didn't expect? Etc. Am I on track? https://t.co/7tzZ7oJ8tl
NO DAMN TEST! Exactly! LOL!
Hmmm... guess I need to watch the video. Thanks!
Here in Tulsa, we have a very active web development community! You should come hang out with us!
A5 have an after school group of 55 Ss from gr 4-6, want to take things further have them work on scratch or code academy
A4: I will start introducing it to the CS T's.
A4: If we give Ss the time to create and innovate, just think about of what could be Ss could accomplish.
A4) I think that it would be an interesting experience being able to create something with technology
We have about 75 Gateway teachers who have option to teach coding.Several mschools started this year! Great computational thinking
A4: will be hosting a couple of workshops this Spring with Adam Carr from Bridgecreek! He is
A MUST READ: Former OK education secretary Dr. Phyllis Hudecki: Moral, economic reasons to boost teacher pay https://t.co/kmfqrVcgIK
A4: I think that HS geometry is a natural place to work it into the standard curriculum...but we need to start earlier than that
A3: younger/beginner classes coding 2gether on Smartboard worked well. 2 goals: host parent coding event & add CS courses in MS & HS
Five-paragraph coding? https://t.co/0PBKDCRSop
Not necessarily, depends on school. I think that writing an algorithm in coding is like writing an essay...
A4: I think it's a great start to allow your Ts to go through the challenge first, this really helps!
A4: promote more heavily for sites to code by providing more resources .
A4: Writing an app that shouts Bullsh%@ everytime a politician spouts a ridiculous fact. I'll make millions during the election yr!
good apps on iPad include great for k-3
Lol! But seriously. Breaking a problem down into steps...isn't that like outlining an essay?
I agree! There are SOME AMAZING coding resources for as young as PK!
A4: Now I need to make sure that the network will support .
I think this is the tweet of the night. https://t.co/aPUgVvzLXO
A4: Writing an app that shouts Bullsh%@ everytime a politician spouts a ridiculous fact. I'll make millions during the election yr!
A4 I plan to intro coding apps and share with parents
A4 I'm all a/b spreading the word. Many Ts feel scared to teach coding b/c they aren't familiar with it...but it's totally doable!
Look out, folks - she's going application and cross-curricular on us! https://t.co/G6CigK2mKm
Lol! But seriously. Breaking a problem down into steps...isn't that like outlining an essay?
Q5. If u r receiving more support 4 your efforts, what does it look like? ... enthusiasm from admins, parents, Ss?
A2: how specifically will coding help Every kid? Even the ones who don't go on to work in CS related field?.
A5: I see how some of my Ss enjoy coding in their computer classes, it makes others excited when they are excited about learning.
I remember Logo! We had this program in my 8th grade computer class.
A?: I wonder if coding is to next generation what typing was in the 80's - maybe you're not a 'typist', but hard to do much w/out it
Logic, the ability to stick w/ something even when it doesn't work at 1st...problem solving. Gosh, I could go on & on!
has great coding robots as does Beebot
I hesitate because it seems like there are other classes with a better fit-and none of my ancient html helps! LOL
Absolutely! The small celebrations when the code actually works is GREAT! Coding teaches THINKING!
A4: our Ss will continue 2 have coding opps at school. Also purchased & began a robotics team.
I vaguely recall a channel had running fact-check during a pol speech a few years back. Pretty cool https://t.co/5w8WeNfknQ
A4: Writing an app that shouts Bullsh%@ everytime a politician spouts a ridiculous fact. I'll make millions during the election yr!
it teaches problem solving skills, logical sequencing thinking, as well as resilience
The Spheros have been super popular with the middle school kiddos!
well theres the obviouls prblm solving skills but it can be practical stuff. programming a MSExcel spreadsheet is a life skill
learned to code back in 80's very proud of his abilities with a comadore 64
I want to learn how make an app that will have someone deliver donuts to my door step
And when you add to Google Sheets...BAM! You've got magic!
Q6. What does more look like? Integrating into core or offering more in tech electives or out of school?
Create that, and you'd probably make millions. LOL
I got a bb8 for my after school coding club they went nuts lol
Notice how the snark level goes up when we don't really understand what we're talking about;-)
A6: This is a tough one. Wish we had resources to better target these classes based on interest, ability https://t.co/t3oGLkRNee
Q6. What does more look like? Integrating into core or offering more in tech electives or out of school?
I like your idea better. Imagine a Taboo-like buzzer interrupting...loudly. Beats the Bingo games ;) https://t.co/MYFUyCp0cI
Are you saying I'm too late to the game, Amy?
Okay, this is the tweet of the night. Sorry , had me at donuts. https://t.co/vwlufPY0p2
I want to learn how make an app that will have someone deliver donuts to my door step
But we LOVE your snark (and donuts)!
I think it will have to start as an elective or after school club to start. Baby steps lol
A6 I think offer both options. Expose all Ss and offer advanced courses for interested Ss!
Usually it just goes up when we're writing about other people who don't know what they're talking about. https://t.co/b0zMiARFGV
Notice how the snark level goes up when we don't really understand what we're talking about;-)
A6: I think it has to some of each. More tech electives would be great, but disciplinary literacy needs to include Tech now.
I think it might support or add to text-ese a bunch. Now there is a language that is popular!
Sorry I am late to the party. You guys are sharing some great insight.
A5: Ss r so excited! Many told me they've been coding @ home 2! & I hope my Ts know how excited I am that they r braving it w/Ss!
A6: Integrated into our curriculums. Instead of adding classes, Ss should be creating wikis for worksheets!
A6: this is tricky. Because...well The Arts are important too. Integrate into what is already there.
Or give the candidates just a little "shock". BUZZ! 3 times & they fall through a trap door never to be heard from again!
A2: Coding is problem solving and logical thinking-great for all ss!
A6 Honestly I think the tougher question is what programming language to teach Ss. There so many and each has its purpose!
I worry that coding will be mandated as the new core skill. It's not for everyone.
A6: It should be available to every S until graduation and use it in every class to promote creativity and innovation.
A6 class designated to CS as well as integrating into other aspects of Ed...Ts will have to learn it too
Great idea! Coding Clubs are a GREAT start for some schools!
Agreed, not for everyone but everyone should have the opportunity to try it!
A6 Game design, app development are examples - courses we added while I was in Moore. https://t.co/nAxYYmPefZ
Q6. What does more look like? Integrating into core or offering more in tech electives or out of school?
A6: Tech will be so ingrained into curriculum. transformation: slates/chalk - paper/pencil - mobile devices - next...?
A6: Quite honestly, I would ❤ for it to mean my Ss don't freak out every time there is a 💻 error-or start with basic typing
oh I know lol just giving other options as well, but thanks 😬
Oooo! It'll be like Debate meets Wipe Out!!! Can we add green ooze too?!? https://t.co/f5HgF2Tozp
Or give the candidates just a little "shock". BUZZ! 3 times & they fall through a trap door never to be heard from again!
Game Design is such an awesome cross-curricular option! Writing, art, music, coding, psychology...it uses everything!
I can go along with that. Maybe a survey course is all that's needed at introductory level.
For which kids is it not appropriate?
Those that have career interests that lie outside it or those that simply don't like it.
I am encouraged by the fact that my daughter is in a Web design class, and I was never offered that in school. That is progress.
A6: @ my elementary, it would mean before/after school. 4 during school, something else would have to go. Hello rock & hard place.
Agreed. And programming is always evolving... so focus on core concepts perhaps? Language depends on student choice?
Yikes! Way late to . Hi all! I'll try to catch up quickly. :D
Isn't THAT how it is with SO many great ideas? https://t.co/C5TxMepBvP
A6: @ my elementary, it would mean before/after school. 4 during school, something else would have to go. Hello rock & hard place.
Coding clubs are a GREAT place to start! The enthusiasm and momentum can really GO places!
my son is a software engineer- he spoke to our kids - so find someone that uses coding to talk to your students
Who teaches the Ss to apply these skills to other areas? I'm 100% for it IF Ss get this part of it!
most career paths include technology
A6: I wonder how long it'll take adults to strip the joy out of coding? Like teaching painting by numbers or science by worksheets.
But I was referring to students.
Eat a donut and try that answer again! :-)
A6b:Focus on solid curriculum/content = great coding/problem solving = AWESOMENESS in giving kids unlimited POWER to succeed!
I've seen students use Scratch for presentations on social studies, math, science, etc. Just be creative!
Yeah, but that doesn't mean they involve coding.
good luck! The convo is rolling tonight!
personally I think we should have a minimum level of mastery before students can graduate
ABSOLUTELY! Bring in an EXPERT! tries to provide this link too!
My biggest concern is a bunch of adults with low level understanding holding Ss back https://t.co/LzX1CAoC8U
A6: I wonder how long it'll take adults to strip the joy out of coding? Like teaching painting by numbers or science by worksheets.
strtd coding 25yr ago with BASIC the basic ideas are still the same now with C++, java, python Ive gotten hooked on python recently
The beauty of keeping elective or integrating in other classes - don't let leggies catch on it's a thing https://t.co/cwWXUHTGY1
A6: I wonder how long it'll take adults to strip the joy out of coding? Like teaching painting by numbers or science by worksheets.
For many languages, the tutorials are so strong that they might not need you that much.
But how do they know they're not interested if we don't introduce them to the concept?
I always start the coding conversation around Ss interest. Coding is necessary for everything these days!
A6) at we have a cyber patriot team!
A1) I agree. It will be necessary in order to keep up.
I agree that it should be available. :-)
I taught ActionScript w/o knowing ActionScript. (But then again I was a strong programmer in other languages)
Coding = addictive! There's nothing better than finally solving that coding problem you've been working on for hours!
IMO Coding is to technology (including ) as reading/writing is to language
This is one of my favorites!!!
I'm not opposed to introducing them to the concepts. Just dont like idea of making it a core skill
A6: My seniors are working on their project next semester. If they know how to code, then I am going to encourage them to use it.
A2a) I don't teach computing, but one of my degrees is MIS.
Last week, I had a student who wants to be a dancer. After , she wants to design an app to help dancers improve posture!
OK, is clearly the hero of evening on this chat. Btw her and I'm actually wanting to learn this 'coding' thing
Not sure the analogy is that tight.
I hope I'm doing this correctly - my first chat! our school won $10000 for tech from Hour of Code
HartfordJimmy And when you add to Google Sheets...BAM! You've got magic!
What are some ways in which your Ss have integrated coding into their senior projects?
A7: Experience has taught me to believe that WE don't need to know how, we just need to put the tools in our Ss hands!
And one can be a dazzler with and never actually code.
A7) students are very bright and will figure things out especially when they're passionate about it. Also, YouTube helps
this is a valid concern. There are too many core skills to teach a "viable" curriculum as it is
you are the chat rockstar. Seriously, teach me things.
I would like Thad mastery demonstrated with digital resumes demonstrating mastery 🙃
PAGING ! Put the finals you're grading down & get in this chat. 🎙
Q8. What are other ways you promote" computational thinking" in your classroom & schools?
But skills come and go I learn how to do cursive But that is not necessary anymore
There's room for exploratory coding if we cut testing and associated remediation
geeze Scott...get it together.
It's more than coding, it's a way of thinking - to pay attention to detail, to plan and execute, to debug and correct.
There's room for LOTS of stuff good for kids if we cut testing & associated remediation. https://t.co/7tfVtQo59G
There's room for exploratory coding if we cut testing and associated remediation
I've also seen Ss that struggle w/ core classes just come alive and thrive when allowed to code!
yea really . . . I FINALLY host an chat and where are U???
A7: it's never too late to learn something new! My friend that's a teacher at Sequoyah is rocking it!
you would think the mention of donuts would have pulled him in...🍩
A8: I don't know...please don't judge me.
our Hour of Code celebration is on YouTube -edmond doyle -hour of code - you could hear what Kyle told the kids
Careful - people lose their minds when you diss cursive. Not me, mind you, but other people. https://t.co/DhbJ9CLCAm
But skills come and go I learn how to do cursive But that is not necessary anymore
I doubt that cutting testing will manifest in more coding classes.
A8 Computational thinking is about breaking down problems into manageable steps. It's a life skill that I emphasize w/ all Ss.
Can someone repost Q8? Tnx :-)
This...I was at a school where computer class was dedicated to test prep https://t.co/UTCm9XWC76
There's room for exploratory coding if we cut testing and associated remediation
A8: We have to get away from the idea that computers are just for typing and research in the core classes.
exactly I told some of the kids that the coding lang might "speak" to them because for some it does
Maybe next year, let's partner classrooms who HAVE participated in w/ Ts/Ss who have not!
Agreed! There's power in creating, whether that's coding or something else!
Q8. What are other ways you promote computational thinking in your classroom & schools?
love it! Would love to help organize!
I've never had a S tell me they don't like to code. They might not like a project, but they love to have the ability.
A8: "if-then" statements, "beginning with the end in mind," power of collab, persistence, imagination, creativity, problem solving...
So often kids can't see past the limits in their world. Coding opens their eyes to endless possibilities!
we would love to participate next year with a partner/partners!
I may make this part of an session - partnerships can form from there! & YES, plz help me!
A8: Every school should have an innovation hour and MakerSpace Ss need a place to explore and create.
If we start them early, Ss will just know coding as part of life. My youngest botball kiddo is in 2nd grade and having no problems.
A8: don't need computers to learn to code. its about the problem-solving and exploration. can be ingrained in most content.
I would be honored! Count me in :)
Yes! Would love to see this happen! & maybe a central website Ts can go to get started? https://t.co/kVqFR8unTK
I may make this part of an session - partnerships can form from there! & YES, plz help me!
Q8: Inquiy Based, Project Based Learning. Even clssrm discussion allows Ss & Ts 2 hear different pov and strategies.
Q8 teach kids to think - solve puzzles -love and understand math - read well - write well-they'll be able to code
willing to hook up with classes here in the Canada? Lol
Should be! https://t.co/5WJtHqYZEs
A8: don't need computers to learn to code. its about the problem-solving and exploration. can be ingrained in most content.
Q8) Teach logic. We all do it in some ways, but it could be increased. It even works with teaching test taking skills.
What if school intro'ed Ss 2 lots of learning opp's? Art? Music? Coding?
How cool would it be if kiddos could write and share code with other Ss from around the world? https://t.co/plIh9L3JgM
willing to hook up with classes here in the Canada? Lol
I'll add you to the list Catherine! THANK YOU!
A8: I think it's helpful to have kids start thinking in if/then statements before they begin to learn.
Learn to code inLaTeX then you could just type on the smartbiard
So cool! Could connect via Skype or other means. Would love it https://t.co/xRwWFxc3Ii
How cool would it be if kiddos could write and share code with other Ss from around the world? https://t.co/plIh9L3JgM
willing to hook up with classes here in the Canada? Lol
