Teaching students financial literacy propels them towards a secure future. 🚀 Do you have a financial literacy class at your school or is it weaved throughout another content area?
#edtechchat#financialeducation
A1 Depends on what student info the tools collect in exchange for their use. We (understandably) aren’t allowed to compromise student privacy. #edtechchat
A1 CT just put into place a fairly extensive student privacy law. There is a lot of legal volleying, but as long as companies agree, yes we can. #edtechchat

A1: Interesting Question. Allowed to? This might fall into ask for forgiveness... Fortunately, we are (to the best of my knowledge anyway...) #EdTechChat
At one time it seemed my district didn’tlike free. Then @SamuelLJackson wanted to give to @DonorsChoose for schools in his home town. Now we love free. #EdTechChat
A1 We are allowed to use any tool that we feel will help Ss in their classroom settings. We consider outcomes and intent before rolling out. #edtechchat
A1: very important to consider a vendor's free app. Is it (a) a free individual plan? or (B) a free school plan? The answer is usually A. Makes a big difference.
#edtechchat
A1: At Concordia, we utilize many different applications on our iPads. This may include Flipgrid, Padlet, Wordsalad, and many other tools that we use to collaborate with fellow classmates. #edtechchat#CCED336
So funny, working on a few, trying to balance my time...I should probably cut down on so many chats, but love the learning and definitely the people :) #edtechchat
A1 Yes, but rethinking. As we deploy more devices and more Ss and Ts are using tech it makes sense to really support and encourage only the best. We’re developing a vetting process, looking for ideas #EdTechChat
My name is Theresa Molenaar and I am a senior at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN studying elementary education! I am so excited for this chat to learn more about specific resources to use in my future classroom! I would love any recommendations! #EdTechChat#CCDD336
Have you seen our latest stickers and animations? Create an amusement park on the Buncee canvas with our latest assets! Creating just became an incredible fun ride! #STEMtober#endlesspossibilities
My students had an extensive discussion today as to what his first and last names are when you’d call him up at a doctor’s office - can’t make this kind of #middleschoolmagic up #edtechchat
A2 I LOVE Edpuzzle, absolutely am addicted as a flipped classroom acolyte. I also use Padlet and FlipGrid is the new freebie on the street #edtechchat@edpuzzle@padlet@Flipgrid
A2 Probably emacs (an editor), and a web browser. Not specifically educational tools, but create for creation and dissemination of content. #EdTechChat
A2 I LOVE Edpuzzle, absolutely am addicted as a flipped classroom acolyte. I also use Padlet and FlipGrid is the new freebie on the street #edtechchat@edpuzzle@padlet@Flipgrid
I use Slack for many of my classes. The free account has many features although their is an options for an upgrade. I also have started using Canva for graphic designing. #edtechchat
On this note, I wonder, how many of us have ever actually read the data/privacy policy for any of the tools we use? Free or paid? Just these sections, not even the whole thing. #edtechchat
I think that it is so important to deeply examine resources before simply using them because they are free. It is so cool that your school does this! #EdTechChat#CCED336
A2: I love the @PearDeck Slides extension, but favorite today Was taking one of our front office people to New Orleans through a google expedition. She had always wanted to go and was so happy. #edtechchat
A2: my kids really enjoy @AdobeSpark for creating content. It has a great UI that requires very little time for Ss to get comfortable. The polished look of student work is impressive. #edtechchat
I use it for my own learning, and also have had Ss as guest moderators on some chats, and even took over the @GetKahoot chat before as the Kahoot Kid :) #edtechchat

Don't just support "the best" but choose the toolset that matches what you need to do, the ability of the grade level it is needed, and the security and privacy that is required #edtechchat

A2: my kids really enjoy @AdobeSpark for creating content. It has a great UI that requires very little time for Ss to get comfortable. The polished look of student work is impressive. #edtechchat
What is the intent of the tool & what are the S outcomes? These are the two questions that guide our adoption. Of course, we explore the new tools that get the buzz & listen to S suggestions but to get in the "wheelhouse" the tool needs to come back to S learning. #edtechchat
The top free Edu Tools I use are @Buncee , @piktochart , and Powtoon. Great tools for creating interactive and visual resources for Ss that they can make themselves #edtechchat
A2: I’ve learned about using many free resources, but one of my favorites is GeoGebra! It works great for physically graphing equations, but there are many other tools you can use for free with this! #EdTechChat#CCED336
There's a lot of things to think about - where geographically is your data being store? How is being stored? Who has access to it? What happens if you delete your account? Do they acknowledge COPA? Are your Ss old enough to legally use? #edtechchat
A2: The top free Edu Tools I use are @Buncee , @piktochart , and Powtoon. Great tools for creating interactive and visual resources for Ss that they can make themselves #edtechchat#edtechchat
A2: Without a doubt @codeorg - I am using it daily with my 7th graders. Can't believe all that is free / lesson plans, student roster, examples, curriculum alignment . . .#edtechchat
A2: I use Google Suite, of course. GDocs is fabulous for collaborating. Use @evernote for notes, site, annotation. Use @AdobeEdu apps like Dreamweaver (web) (not free). @pixlr for imaging. Use @Snagit all the time for screen capturing. #edtechchat
In reply to
@nathan_stevens, @evernote, @AdobeEdu, @pixlr, @Snagit
A3: I can tell you from our end - a TON of students are using WeVideo free version. Don't worry - the data is protected and we don't market to them. #edtechchat
The age is really interesting, and very tied to COPPA (misspelled above). When you enter your students names for accounts, do you supply last names? Besides your class, what other communities are you inviting/placing them into? Do they have the maturity to navigate? #edtechchat
A3: I'm trying to get my kids to become consistent users of the blog tool available on @Schoology. I've also being sharing with them the benefits of my interactions with you all in hopes they consider developing a #PLN of their own to personalize learning. #edtechchat
A2/3: The top free Edu Tools I use are @Buncee , @piktochart , and Powtoon (Also my favorites). Great tools for creating interactive and visual resources for Ss that they can make themselves. My Ss create presentations, infographics, and videos #edtechchat
A3 Ss spend a lot of time with GSuite too. It is most pervasive set of tools in school. Sometimes even it’s limitations can spawn some creative uses #EdTechChat
Yes, the tool can open up more opportunities when it is offered as a choice. Digital AND analog options must be present. Also, just having a glowing screen does not make learning more robust. Intentionality is key! #edtechchat#CCED336
Students will present their #pbl if they want by creating a lesson, and also using the lessons in library to explore, and other times, will provide more differentiation #edtechchat
But this is a good point. Also if it is an installable program, make sure your IT dept reads the software license to make sure you can use it #EdTechChat

I astonished by how many kids resort to text-based sources for research and don't consider the wide depth of info available through @YouTube. #edtechchat
duh. How could I forget YouTube! The single greatest learning resource of the 21st century. My kids have learned everything from ukulele to manicures to school work. And so have I

so awesome and glad to hear more teachers are embracing it. I get this sense that kids come to school ready to learn from @youtube and often hear "We don't learn that way here" #EdTechChat On Demand Passion Driven Learning FTW!!!
A4 Money save and you don't have to commit to district wide onboarding and such. The back end could be a little easier and the exploration a little less commitment and pressure to use often #edtechchat
A2: I use a lot of free Google tools with my student account. I also have a lot of professors that provide free tools to use in their classes as well. #edtechchat
A4: some people have mentioned tools like Fligrid and Google blogs and hangouts and I think those are very useful in engaging students and appealing to different learning styles. There are so many opportunities with tech! #edtechchat
A4: When you're dealing with a whole class or multiple classes, even a 1 dollar payment of say an app can add up fast. Fortunately, there are usually free alternatives that can still hold up in quality. #edtechchat#CCED336
Of course, but then it would be a good idea for people to share the resource with a full URL as @participate will then curate all the links from the chat. #EdTechChat
In reply to
@ajpodchaski, @participate, @participate
A4: free is a good way to evaluate and validate a tool - just be careful many free things are not really. Then if you move to paid - the implementation can be very confusing #edtechchat
A3: I'm trying to get my kids to become consistent users of the blog tool available on @Schoology. I've also being sharing with them the benefits of my interactions with you all in hopes they consider developing a #PLN of their own to personalize learning. #edtechchat
A4: Besides the fact that they don’t cost money(!), I think it can be useful to expose students to just how many resources there are to learn from! It also leads the way for teaching about quality sources and the process of vetting! #EdTechChat#CCED336
A4b - Free tools only share some of the options, but lure you in with great options that cost $$$. Also, simply said FREE = You get what you pay for!
#edtechchat
A4b) Too many people try and endorse free tools without examining the cost of running the tool - how rosters update, how it integrates into other systems, privacy - it all makes a difference #edtechchat
A4b A drawback of the free edu #edtech tool is the limitations of use (cannot exceed a certain number of walls, presentations, etc) Hidden fees are also pretty crummy. #edtechchat
A4b some things have cost, even at free (student data). Also, if a free tool is used too much, but does not have adequate funding, those tools can go away because the cost to run is too high for the little revenue coming in. #wikispaces#edtechchat
A4b: free limits the barrier to use the tool. Initially this may be seen as a positive. However, I would argue it promotes a culture where teacher simply incorporate the latest flavor of the month without thinking about the needs of students or intended outcomes. #edtechchat
I'm sure you could do a lot with the free version of @schoology but it seems like most of the features I would want are in the paid version which seems to be something intended for district licensing. I could be wrong, but that's the impression i got #EdTechChat
In reply to
@keith_guarino, @Schoology, @Schoology
A4b: Some of the resources let you get to a certain point then they cut off until you pay more money. Then there is the AMOUNT of free EDU tools...lots to go through. #edtechchat
A4: big con is that they often aren't really free. They are either collecting data, or trying to get signups (looks good to investors), or they are going to monetize later (problematic), or they will just plain disappear because...well...they went out of business! #edtechchat
A4B: I think using free tech tools involves a lot of balance with other teaching strategies and not allowing the tools to become a distraction. Also teachers need to be aware of privacy issues and educate their students on proper tech usage and etiquette. #edtechchat
But when people just share a resource by twitter handle, it wouldn't pick that up as a resources like a URL so it can present a challenge. Not sure I have an answer, but I know it's great how it collects all the web addresses #EdTechChat
In reply to
@Gregbagby, @ajpodchaski, @participate
A4b: One 'con' of free tool is that you sometimes get what you pay for. There is not a lot of support. Some tools are not vetted properly, and don't connect to standards or sound pedagogy #edtechchat
A4B: Teachers and students both may rely too heavily on the EDU tools. They may get the most out of the tool if they don’t know how to effectively use it. Getting lost in how to use an app may distract T & S from overall objectives. #EdTechChat#CCED336
A4b: On the flipside, apps/software that is created from the labor of love is hard to come by, If you not paying for something your usually "paying" for it through adverts or constant reminders that your missing features. But ultimately these can be ignored. #EdTechChat#CCED336
I think that when we talk of free #edTech tools (or resources) we need to remember twitter chats, members of our PLN, etc. The shared construction of knowledge is the best FREE tool I can think of. #edtechchat
A4B Free tools are rarely truly “free.” Always identify what the actual transaction is. Are you or your Ss the product? Is it your data? Not all free tools are transparent about how they can be offered as free #EdTechChat
A5 My biggest worry is that tools, paid or free, won't adhere to privacy laws and then POOF, you cannot use them anymore. My sad story with Duolingo. I loved it so :( #edtechchat
A4: just to put the vendor perspective out there - it's hard to create nice stuff that meets the requirements of school use. Costs real $. Most vendors are very small & trying to survive. #edtechchat
A5: Certainly a concern, but I think that once a tool is proven effective I would be far more likely to decide to purchase it. However, the concern becomes whether or not it feels misleading if you get hooked on a tool that is supposedly free #EdTechChat
A5 There is always the thought in the back of my mind that what was once free will soon be gone. We edus are a creative bunch and will find a work around...mainly because we have some pretty creative Ss who will guide the way. #edtechchat
A5: #edtechchat That is what budget requests are for. The critical question for me, is the user base enough to justify the cost. Have to have some ability to get metrics to justify paying for something, or have a good curricular reason.
A4b: Some free tools are not necessarily "free" with premium add-ons to make money. Because of this, better features are missed out on that help the tools run better. #edtechchat
A5: they will become paid. Unless they get gobbled up by one of he big three. Then they become part of the eco-system (but still not free). If they do go from free only to paid - get ready for them to disappear completely. #edtechchat
A5: yes I worry that free tools will be turned into pay. So far they have just added member bonuses for a small fee. Which helps them cover costs so I can relate. #edtechchat
Q5: Yes! I fear too many people will use the free and the companies will start charging. Fear @Flipgrid will be tied to a Office subscription. #edtechchat
hmmmm.... Microsoft has owned @Skype for a very long time and that hasn't been the case. Also, Office 365 accounts are free, so not sure if that has to be a concern unless of course your district won't allow you to create accounts which could be an issue for sure #EdTechChat
A5b. What worries me is not that things won’t stay free, but if we make the right investments in the paid services. How do you maintain consistency in providing support, but fluid enough to stay current? #edtechchat
A5 I do sometimes, but I think the #edtech companies do their best, to keep it reasonable, and may be willing to work with schools, also I think about the purpose of the tech and if I can find another option too #edtechchat
A5: I find that by staying with certain developers that have been around for years that I typically don't encounter the problem of a tool that was once free is no longer. I also favor simplicity so sometimes I use the low-tech method when I hit a roadblock. #edtechchat
A5: I don't mind paying for quality. The problem in many classrooms is very finite financial resources. Sometimes district has money to invest in well vetted apps. Meanwhile, life in the classroom is always about adjustment #edtechchat
A5: I think that once a free resource turns into costing money, the teacher and school need to seriously consider how much that resource is benefiting their students! #EdTechChat#CCED336
A5: It’s a concern, but a positive of the EDU tools being paid would be it would really cause me to think about what apps are worth paying for depending on the benefits they will have with my students and my classroom. #EdTechChat#CCED336
A5 If it is a high quality tool & truly valuable find a way to get it paid for. Value the tool & service. Creative people need to be paid too. It has potential to encourage growth and innovation too #EdTechChat
A5: I think this depends on the situation but if your using tools that are useful enough to use in the first place, this can become a very real problem. #EdTechChat#CCED336
More and more the "payment" model is an advertising one. So many things have gone to the subscription model. One way or another, app development and support must be funded. #edtechchat
A6 The voting option hidden in the short answer mode of @Socrative. It is powerful for groups of students in creating guides/exemplars/mentor texts. #edtechchat
A2. One of my top tools I will use when I become a teacher will be Kahoot. Its a very fun free game online. You can create it for multiple subjects. The kids love it and can learn a lot from it. #edtechchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
Tech leaders must create a lifecycle for tools - paid or free - that take end of support into account and make the right decisions to transition to other tools as needed #edtechchat
A6 Still think blogging platform is super powerful, especially when it is viewed as more than digital journal tool. They can be immense content management systems with extraordinary possibilities with additional features available. Old school digital but still amazing #EdTechChat
A3 I know that when I work at the daycare the school agers told me about how they use imovie, kahoot, and quizlet. #edtechchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A7 Will the #edtech tool help this student? Will my S be able to navigate the platform? Will the tool play nicely with Drive? Will the tool capture S understanding & learning? Is it more than a one trick pony? #edtechchat
A7: I’m paying more attention to privacy and terms, but the 3 things I look for are 1) increase student engagement; 2) increase feedback; 3) save time and/or money. #edtechchat
Q4A some pluses for using free edu tools are that it gives them a new way to learn. Itll make them eager to want to learn because it is something new to them. #barbersclass#edtechchat@barbersclass
