A1: Our new admin, @AllenHicks66AP and @mrs_ochs_ have developed a new house system, ala Hogwarts, and the Ss get to voice their thoughts to the house leaders and then at our house meetings every month the leaders present on topics. #NoVAedchat
A1. I have only done my observation, but I aim to have my classroom be a place where students feel they can share opinions with me and the class #NOVAedchat
A1: From my perspective students don't share their opinions enough. However, their opinions should be heard more often as they can be very valuable. #NoVAedChat
I liked to do this too, when I was in the classroom. We did it often at the end of the week. Reflect on what went well, what didnt, what they would change or keep #NoVAedchat
I think if i ask purposeful questions as a reflection of the lessons to set up for the next. This year my librarian and i are trying to do more student choice opportunities and give them “explore” time in an area interest. #Novaedchat
K-5 they earn points or lose points and then at the end of the year we will do a celebration where a House cup will be given out. So far so good I think it is great and most of the students are really loving it. #NoVAedchat

Pretty well. I'm asking them to self assess their achievement and effort level and then add comments. I'm getting a good idea of how they perceive their work in class. I also like how it adds structure to the period. #NoVAedchat
It's important that students know you HEAR them. Do they see you incorporating their feedback into the next lesson? Trying out their ideas? Or do you listen, but nothing changes #novaedchat
Simple thing, but when I'm taking photos to share our learning on twitter, I often ask Ss if they are ok with me sharing pic. They are sometimes surprised when I listen when they say no #NoVAedchat

Q2: What are some ways that students might be able to give feedback on lessons, learning, and their learning environment at your school or in your class(es)? #NoVAedChat
In my experience, student input is most often solicited AFTER major decisions have been made. They are almost never included in discussions of the core parts of THEIR learning, like curriculum, grad requirements, etc. #NoVaEdChat
A2: When I try a new activity with Ss, I also try to ask for two positives and two things they would change. They love it, especially when they know their feedback is going to help make the activity better. #NoVAedchat
A2: I have worked with a group of Ss since they were in 3rd grade, now in 5th, to help them self-advocate for their learning with Blended Learning. In year three it is finally coming to fruition. Giving the Ss choice is always a plus. #NoVAedchat
A2: I think this can be hard, because Ss don't know what they don't know so not all decision-making should go to them in my opinion. But I think it's great to find out their preferences early in the year to understand what kind of learners are in the classroom #NoVAedchat
A2a: The Ss this year didn't like an activity the T was doing and they very politely asked if they could create something with Google Slides or Docs instead to show what they understood. The teacher was a little taken back by it, but then accepted their proposal. #NoVAedchat
Teaching students how to say "no" is something that needs to be explicit too! Knowing students how to set boundaries with others is a critical skill- something that adults need to practice too! #novaedchat
Unfortunately, too many important decisions about their learning are made at the district, state, and national levels. But in schools, simply including them in determining rules & penalties is a start. #NoVaEdChat
I was afraid when they actually put it into practice, but they were very polite about it and had a good alternative. The interesting thing will be when they leave and go onto MS. Next lesson will be that eventhough you propose something it won't always be accepted. #NoVAedchat
I didn't really think about that as feedback - I use it a lot when teaching Shakespeare: how well do you understand (before we do any work) and how well do you understand now (at the end of the period) holding up fingers 1-10. Really quick temperature take #NoVAedchat
A3: I reflect on their feedback and let them know that their opinions are important to me and will help improve our class culture. As for school surveys, I’m not sure if the Ss voices are really heard or acted upon. #NoVAedchat
I want 2start ASAP w/ speaking. Ss are taking PALS 2.0 midyear (doesn’t count) but would be great 2start Fri/Mon maybe descriptions? or answer general questions? #NoVAedChat

Q3 - unfortunately the easiest data to collect and analyze (multiple choice survey) is also the least useful. So much more in written and spoken answers, but it takes time to truly consider that feedback, and it's not always done. #novaedchat
A3: Now like most Ts our Ss have to complete a survey about them each year. The Ts are then supposed to use that data to influence their teaching practice. Once the Ts submit their portfolios though it gets reset every year. I would like to see it carry over. #NoVAedchat
A3: i meet with my teaching partner (my librarian) regularly and we adjust our lessons and pace based on student feedback. It’s nice to share an office. We have talked informally about this in the past. Now we are more purposeful and keep records. #NoVAedchat
I think one of the simplest and most meaningful activities is the "I wish my teacher knew..." prompt. Several of our HS Ts have done it this year & we always learn so much #NoVAedchat
So many of these questions involve Ts asking Ss for feedback... how can we encourage our Ss to ask for their own feedback/use it to improve? #StudentCentered#NOVAedchat
A3a: I would love to see instead of a survey given to kids maybe a video response or something more meaningful. I just feel that a survey doesn't have the same impact as seeing Ss or other Ts say it #NoVAedchat
I did this with my Ss at the start of the school year and it was an eye opener. It’s such a powerful activity and the things the students tell you really let you know where they are and what you can do as a teacher to teach them #NoVaEdChat
I think by working with them to be reflective on their work. This is a controversial practice, but with our Blended Learning classes the Ss get to retake the exit tickets over again until they pass. Though we work with them to look at what they did wrong and improve. #NoVAedchat
Modeling a growth mindset is necessary! Establishing a trusting relationship w/students & a strong classroom community will help students be open to growth #novaedchat
Performance based tasks shouldn't be avoided because they take longer to grade. They are so much more meaningful to analyze & can tell you so much about students! #novaedchat
A4: It builds a relationship with the Ss which will then help you reach them when they have an issue. They will trust you more and in turn work for you. #NoVAedchat
YES. YES. YES. Ss have so much to share! Spoken from a painfully shy child: it is sooo hard to be vulnerable and share out loud! That doesn't mean Ss have nothing to say! #novaedchat
A4: Allowing for #studentvoice empowers student learning. Ts and schools need to listen to what the Ss are saying and realize that sometimes we may need to give up some of our control to allow for student learning to happen. #NoVaEdChat
Giving up control is what most Ts have an issue with. They are used to having all the control and when you suggest they give up control by giving the Ss choice they think you are saying they can't teach. #NoVAedchat
I know! I really wish some Ts would realize just how important student voice and choice is. It changed my whole classroom when I made the switch. #NoVaEdChat
Exactly! It’s about showing them that they matter and that you respect them as individuals. You also realize that each one learns a different way and that is why you give them choices. #NoVaEdChat
A5: i. The lab ... i am always exploring ways for students to share their learning. So getting their feedback on what works best for the class and for themselves would be good #NoVAedchat
We are a @PosProject school and we have a team of students helping to design the program. They are part of it from the beginning, making decisions and advising us #novaedchat#otherpeoplematter
A5 There are so many little ways to do this. Ever see how excited Ss are when they get to choose their lunch table or sit next to a friend in class. Ts don't need to make huge changes to help Ss feel like the classroom belongs to everyone. #NoVAedchat
A5 we’ve come 2more flexible spot now as 2what we can learn & when; Ss can pull which vocab & verbs & how they want 3discuss/describe things (French) #NoVAedchat
A5: I would love to give Ss the ability to choose how they learn. Truly give them control over the Pace, Place, and Path. Not all Ss learn as fast as others and I think if we give them the choice with in the structure to chose we would see better results. #inquiry#NoVAedchat
A5: I allow Ss to share feedback during class. I also have Ss who eat lunch with me every day and share with me. I have told Ss who are shy they can always leave a note on my desk or email me if they don’t want to share out loud. #NoVAedchat
We are too! Our Ss came 2faculty mtg yesterday to discuss w/us. Ss are 7th gr- hoping to keep them through 8th if I’m not mistaken. Makes me happy to hear! #NoVAedChat
I love that my Ss want to eat lunch with me. They actually told my sub on Monday and Tuesday while I was at VSTE that it was normal for them to eat in my room and asked her if they could eat with her. My room is their safe space #NoVaEdChat
#NoVAedChat A2 students can voice record their answers so they can feel free to share opinions. They can also offer other ideas via a suggestion box where they write ways to change their learning environment
They are the best 💗 That time is usually the most enjoyable part of my day. I told the kids they could still come in during second semester. #NoVAedchat
I think it's important to remember while we might not control EVERYTHING, we do control some things. Start with what you can change, ask for feedback and go from there #NOVAedchat
#NoVAedChat A5 I could make it a work station. Write and draw something you would like to see taught in class or something the teacher could do different to help you learn.
