A1 #ditchbook - using tech apps that will assess the students as they progress like @edpuzzle@quizizz or a favorite @thatquiz which give quick feedback - saves time and let’s you intervene to mend Ss gaps and increase learning @NoahsArkTech
Krista from freezing SE Michigan! 5th grade teacher and I’m ditching from the warmth of my house since it’s less than -10° outside... dreaming of being in Arizona right now!! #DitchBook
A1: When I was teaching social studies, I tried to "grade as I go" as much as I could, gave me the opportunity to give Ss the chance to fix things before they were due #ditchbook

A1: Don't let "grading" become an isolated event. We should be continuously evaluating students and their learning while giving feedback. The real "work" is done side by side with the student which allows for a more accurate "reporting" of student progress. #DitchBook
A1 I think providing feedback in small chucks more often is helpful, in this way it is more of a process to increase learning rather than and end piece, in addition you have more data to inform your final grade. #ditchbook
A1: I prefer feedback over grading which can be through conversation, comments in Google, giving Ss answers so they can check, as well as comments on a paper. I feel they read paper comments the least. #ditchbook
A1. Keep in mind that we don’t have to grade everything that our students do!
I love using #GoogleKeep tool to leave feedback on Google Docs. Also loving #Goobric + #Doctopus#ditchbook
A1: I have to agree with @TTmomTT - I value productive feedback rather than grading, per say. But, I am guilty of not always following through on that. #Ditchbook
A1: Be strategic in what we grade. Focus on in the moment feedback to help students grow and learn each day not just when they turn stuff in. #ditchbook
Grades actually stop the learning process for Ss. They see it as an end. If we give feedback and opps for improvement, they will keep learning. #DitchBook
A1: I try to always use tech to grade my quick formative assessments! Google forms are my go to! Embed feedback, videos, links and it autogrades! #Ditchbook
Greatly agree! Formative assessment doesn’t always have to be written. But anecdotal notes that Ts take as we are monitoring can be very helpful #ditchbook
A1: I use apps for instant feedback. I also remind myself I don’t have to grade everything. I do lots of quick checks in class for understanding. #DitchBook
I liked Goobrics when grading with rubrics. Working great with Google classroom...quick/easy. It's a Spreadsheet Add-On and worth checking out #Ditchbook
Best way to save time...ditch the traditional, grades based model...invest time in feedback, conversations w/ Ss, and improvement rather than current state of knowledge #DitchBook
It's something I work on from day 1. I have Ss who come back to me and tell me how much they appreciated the focus on learning. They don't always see that in other classes. #DitchBook
A1: I have Ss take a photo of journal OR lab work from the iPad and upload to the class Evernote. No taking home a bunch of journals.
Send feedback via Evernote or Ss personal folder #DitchBook
A1 #ditchbook - using tech apps that will assess the students as they progress like @edpuzzle@quizizz or a favorite @thatquiz which give quick feedback - saves time and let’s you intervene to mend Ss gaps and increase learning @NoahsArkTech
A2: I love the real-time feedback that can be offered to Ss in @activelylearn. I've seen immediate improvement/results in deeper thinking & responses. #DitchBook
A2 Technology plays a huge part in timely feedback. I love using @MicrosoftTeams to streamline everything and the commenting features within MS Word. #DitchBook
Peer reviewing can also be helpful in that many mistakes and issues can be caught be peers and less for the teacher to have tT to have to focus on #Ditchbook
A1- My best strategy is to only assign what is actually worth grading. Otherwise we go over it in class and learn together either as they go or when the finish. #DitchBook
A2 I have been using comments on Google docs/slides etc. to provide in the moment, personal feedback. Students love it because it stays in the document and allows them to check it off as "resolved" much like a checklist. It is all about growth mindset. #ditchbook
A3: shout outs at the beginning of a lesson gives accolades to a few ss and ultimately gives feedback to all ss because ones who haven’t mastered a skill/concept can get new ideas or suggestions based on what you shout out #DitchBook
As a current student, I greatly appreciate feedback and find it really beneficial to my learning. Even if it is constructive criticism, it is helping me improve and grow! #DitchBook
A2: GAFE makes giving feedback super easy. Open a doc, make a table with row for each person/group, use voice typing to share your thoughts, then file, “email collaborators” Ss get the feedback automatically sent to email. #Ditchbook
A2: I love the functionality of Goobric for effective feedback. When Ss write essays, the ability to record verbal feedback is awesome, too. Or, there's always @Flipgrid to record comments or feedback! #Ditchbook
A2: Using @GoogleForEdu tool’s like Classroom to leave feedback for Ss. I also use comments in Docs and Slides. The School Recorder Tools lets me record video messages I can share with the students. #DitchBook
A2 Walk around when Ss are working. Don’t wait for them to ask ?s. Have a list of resources/tutorial vids to link to Ss work to review specific stds auto feedback via G Forms, Flubaroo. Voice or vid feedback w Flipgrid #ditchbook
A2: Oops, answered this with Q1. Comments in Google, conversations with Ss, custom Bitmoji feedback, worked out solutions provided, Google Forms, etc.
https://t.co/V8AvezSM27#DitchBook
A2: G Suite comments feature rocks, plus @Bitmoji plays well with G Suite, but I love spending minutes here and there for face to face feedback. #ditchbook
Instead of giving an essay 1 grade, each part of the essay got a separate grade (i.e. Intro p., Body Ps, conclusion, etc.) & all were graded on a rubric. More informative on which parts need more work. #ditchbook
We don't peer grade but we do think, pair, share where Ss think about the problem and a possible solution, then work/check with their partner. Once they are satisfied they share with class. #DitchBook
Q2: Maybe rudimentary, but visit each student as they progress through their work. You can catch a lot by just observing and then students have real time feedback. No tech needed. ;) #ditchbook
A2 as a student, I find it very beneficial when teachers provide feedback by walking through the classroom and checking the work I am doing. Also, I have had teachers email me personally about how I was doing in the class, which meant a lot to me #DitchBook
A2 #DitchBook: I really enjoy using google classroom, allows for Ss to submit assignments or collaborative projects. @nearpod is also another good app for quality feedback. @NoahsArkTech
A3: Love how G forms tells you commonly missed questions, gives you a pie chart, and analyzes the data for you! Love putting the results in a G Sheet! #ditchbook
A3: I find that using a self-grading tool like @edpuzzle provides a quick snapshot of student understanding. Ts can immediately "adjust their sails!" #DitchBook
Ahh, good ole' @plickers. I have a problem with Kahoot. I tell my Ss fast doesn't equal smart from @joboaler and Kahoot rewards fast not thoughtful. #DitchBook

A3: Using this data for 1:1 conferencing and goal-setting. I really wish I could do more of this in the given time, since it's important for students to see their progress and set goals with a purpose in mind. #Ditchbook
A3 I think the data needs to be meaningful to Ss and Ts. Right now I’m asked to collect data that isn’t useful to us and the assessments from the programs are poorly written. And when o turn in my info i have no idea where it goes . #DitchBook
A3: I like how using tools like @quizizz@quizlet and Google Forms Quizzes show me the commonly missed questions. It allows me to adjust and reteach the concepts that my students struggled with. #DitchBook
Going to different questions based off which answer you choose. For example, get a YouTube video if answered incorrect or next problem if correct #DitchBook

A3 we use a lot of Ss driven data to plan for Ss led confences. They need to be able to talk about their growth and what they need to work on not me #DitchBook
A3: Lots of digital learning & assessment tools will do break downs of how Ss did on specific tasks, make me realize when I wrote a terrible question or didn't teach it well enough #ditchbook
A3 I have a spreadsheet with my students related to progress towards standards. It is a nightmare to set up but really easy once you get going. It is a great way to show progress and see where your holes are. #ditchbook
Of course, but it's one thing to see the data and set a goal, but to conference about how to improve and include some accountability would have major benefits. #Ditchbook
A3 I think poll everywhere is a great resource to use when collecting data in the classroom. There are also many options you can use, such as multiple choice or free response, and it's fun for students too because their responses pop up on the screen! #DitchBook
A3 #DitchBook: data helps with student tracking. It allows us, as educators, to understand where our Ss stand in regards to certain topics. The data then allows us to target Ss needs more effectively @NoahsArkTech
A1: I prefer feedback over grading which can be through conversation, comments in Google, giving Ss answers so they can check, as well as comments on a paper. I feel they read paper comments the least. #ditchbook
Mike, you and I speak the same language. I teach my Ss to track their data and reflect over what they know and what they need to know. I use it to guide their learning. #DitchBook
It's important to be strategic and actively look at formative assessment data, not just summative. How else can you measure student growth during & summative unless you have something tangible to compare it to? #ditchbook
A3: share the data with Ss. If the data shows a missing link I use the us mentality, “how can we learn from this?” “What do we need to review, revise, etc” “how can I help you more?” #Ditchbook
#DitchBook A3: For testing we group ours by readiness standards - we can see as a team what the end goal is... Supporting standard data is more of the quick tech assignments. @NoahsArkTech
A3 #ditchbook Quiz type apps assignments that assess certain TEKS allow you to see results, and then small group your students to improve results. @NoahsArkTech
A3 #DitchBook#ContentTeamPlanning! Being able to analyze by standard so you can reach each students specific need. There are resources to organize data so that you have access to this. @NoahsArkTech
Absolutely ... It's liberating too - I am free to be a teacher, not a scorekeeper ... Putting the burden of demonstrating the evidence on them - empowers them #DitchBook
A3: Also, share data as a teaching team. Put your heads together on areas where data shows students are struggling most. Break down the silos & looking at spreadsheets of scores alone. #ditchbook
A3: we have been using google forms for quick formative assessments that do not count towards grades. It also works for #retrivalpractice as recommended by @PoojaAgarwal#DitchBook

A4 I am old school, I love posting a question and getting a notecard with a short answer. I love doing this with exit tickets to see if we are approaching our objectives. #ditchbook
A3 Make sure that the data we are collecting is meaningful. If we’re still grading busy work, then it’s not going to help guide our instruction. #ditchbook
A4 - Over the past year my thinking has changed. Everything is formative until the students tell us it's summative. Thanks @KatieBudrow for helping me with this #DitchBook
I loveeee using google forms! Autograde, can have open-ended ?, embed image or video, Branch questions based on answer, Ss get immediate feedback and I get everything in a nice neat spreadsheet or graph 👌🏻 #Ditchbook
All fancy tech tools aside, it takes me literally 60 seconds to whip up a Google Form exit ticket & post in GClassrm. I like that I can vary the types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, etc.). Then all the info is saved in 1 spot #ditchbook
A1: If it MUST be a grade, there are sssooo many tech options that will do that for you. I prefer informal (walk around, peer conversations, exit tickets) #ditchbook
A4 @goformative is great for diverse types of assessment. Edpuzzle and @flipgrid are also staples for formative assessment in a language class. #DitchBook
A4: I love Google Forms, @Socrative, Interactive games like Dance Dance Transversals, and whole room checks like hold up the card for SAS, ASA, etc. (math speak, sorry), even thumbs up thumbs down. #DitchBook
A4: Out of all of the ones out there, I still like Google Forms. Quick, efficient, and easy to share out to Ss. Plus, I receive a visual of all responses and can grade and assess quickly. #Ditchbook
Trying something new with @Flipgrid and connecting with parents/guardians. Ss are sharing their portfolios at home &then adults are responding on Flipgrid, discussing what they are proud of and goals they have for their Ss. They have been pretty amazing so far.
#DitchBook I sometimes like using heads down, thumbs up - so they are not looking at others responses. For more tech use #GoogleClassroom offers open response and private comments.
And that's the end of our regularly-scheduled #DitchBook chat. Hang tight for the super-duper bonus round! For those of you who have to bail, stay warm!
