Hi! I’m Shelly Sanchez, an adj professor in TX, a new mom, and the author of a new book about Mission Minded Learning with #Edtech Missions https://t.co/uV4UFWA2er#EduGoalsMooc
Welcome guest expert @Marisa_C who is a co-founder of the ELTon shortlisted #ELTChat, an author, international speaker/trainer, and the Director of Studies of CELT Athens #EduGoalsMOOC
Thank you both for your warm welcome - #EduGoalsMOOC I train teachers in Athens and online, mainly CELTA and DELTA - but do occassionaly do masterclasses with adult learners - classroom management important in all cases #EduGoalsMOOC
A1: Teachers support our school-wide behavior expectations. In addition they partner with their students to create expectations for their classroom. We are the #lynnhavenlions and follow the GRRR code. Students hear this consistent language. #EduGoalsMooc

Our expectations are pretty standard - respect to one another and tutors, polite conduct as is appropriate in an academic setting and also punctuality in attendance and handing in of work #edugoalsmooc
Teachers should model these behaviors by being on time, respecting the same rules, timely and respectful feedback to assignments and teaching practices but we do also have a contract - our house rules that trainees must respect #edugoalsmooc

A1: I’ve seen teachers who are not respected by students have a nightmare of a year and those loved by students have such a meaningful year #Edugoalsmooc
We also expect teachers to understand that classroom management issues are very much connected with maintaining good discipline. They need to understand the causes of poor management or lack of focus #edugoalsmooc
A2: Partner with students to create the expectations for the learning environment. This needs to be an ongoing conversation. Also, model and implement structures, routines and procedures with consistency and gather feedback in order to make necessary adjustments. #edugoalsmooc
Do an intensive learner training early on - familiarize your learners with some of your standard procedures and activities so that
- they know how to participate
- They know why you are doing them
#edugoalsmooc
I agree! Being proactive helps keep the focus on the learning. This week #EduGoalsMooc participants created Teacher Survival Kits to keep the learning going
A2: Building relationships and developing positive approaches to resolve issues supports effective classroom management. There is not a substitute for building relationships. It is our most powerful tool.

Make Ss responsible - this will take time but you could begin by asking them to draft a poster of the class rules
#edugoalsmooc
I love @drjoy77 's visuals which reflect how I think a lot!
Good class managers can learn a lot from good company managers, actually. But they need practical training as well - Prepare well - rehearse well - good class management is part of good collaboration and learner training #edugoalsmooc

A3: Avoid adding fuel to the fire by reacting based on feelings and emotions. It is not personal, although it may feel that way in many cases. Step back and take a moment to determine an appropriate initial response. #EduGoalsMooc
Very treu - also true of teachers as trainees - perhaps model behaviours on tt courses #edugoalsmooc (with unruly trainee teachers) LMS's are very good for this with adults
A2: Yes. I find when I set my students up to understand that I am sharing with them not "teaching" them they are much more receptive to learning. Respect goes both ways. #EduGoalsMOOC
To establish a safe learning environment w/ systems and routines. There must be a mutual respect amongst Ts and Ss. Behaviors should always be addressed in a way that is not confrontational, demoralizing or a struggle for power in the classroom. #EduGoalsMOOC

I believe that Ts need to understand the cause of the problem - is it the physical setting, the instructional content, the expectations ss come with to school or what is it? #edugoalsmooc
A3: Listening is important. Repeating and paraphrasing what your hear. Be kind. Show compassion and empathy. Turn a mistake into an opportunity for learning. #EduGoalsMOOC

When you establish relationships, care to know your Ss, take into consideration their needs when planning lessons, they trust their is an investment in their success. Thus having a positive impact on classroom management. #EduGoalsMOOC
So I believe Ts need to take time to talk to their Ss about what motivates them, where they are coming from and more before seeking a partial solution to an instance of 'messing up' #EduGoalsMooc
Which I guess brings the parents or caretakers into the equation
A4: I’ve discovered of a parent likes you then they’ll reinforce respectful behavior but if not then that could add to student not respecting you #edugoalsmooc
A4: Presenting a unified front with parents shows students that the adults are on the same page with regard to expectations for behavior and learning. #EduGoalsMOOC
I give them 5 Gold rules on the first day, Gold rule number 1 : Do not talk when the teacher explaining.
Routines , Routines , we then unpack, I get them to explain rules back to me , explore the why. There was on class I didn't do this on 1st day, they gave me hell all year.
Adults have our setbacks, so it’s important talk through the situation 1:1 and remind the Ss moving toward you expect their best by making every effort to do so. We have to remember they are children and have to be taught to do better by showing them better. #EduGoalsMOOC
Sharing a 3-part series of blog posts on class discipline and how it connects to excellent classroom management https://t.co/YloVY6Fvcw Hoe you can find something useful there #EdiuGoalsMOOC
Good classroom management is part of the teacher's techincal knowhow, so they need to have followed a good course that equips them for this but understanding the complexity of the instructional setting and what causes issues is not technical at all! #eugoalsmooc
I like the idea of contracts and rules as Dennis CHikobvu mentions, but I like the idea of Ss making the rules/contracts as well and the Teacher being answerable to some rules too! #edugoalsmooc e.g. "create fun and interesting lessons"

Technology can help all parties concerned with the wide variety of apps and websites which can help parents communicate with parents better and with parents to keep track of the work done by their offspring
A4. When parents know you as the teacher of their son or daughter, you communicate with them, you express them your worries and vice verse, at home they will transmit to their children that security, then behavior, attention will be better in the classroom.#EduGoalsMooc
#EduGoalsMOOC
There is a danger there, that the parent may think they have a say in what happens in the classroom, so a school or a teacher or school leadership in general need to be very careful and proactive regarding what expectations they have #EduGoalsMOOC
But using tech may be more difficult in some cultures where technology not available to all homes or where parents may be less well educated or even indifferent. #EduGoalsMOOC
A5: We have to be creative and work to find a variety of ways to engage parents. It does not have to always have to occur through a formal school event #EduGoalsMooc
A5: By creating a welcoming school environment. Greeting students and families at the beginning/end of the day is a great way to send this message. #EduGoalsMOOC
Very true - although in some cases, esp for language learning, attending a foreign language class has helped some parents 'see' and be more supportive of their child's effort #edugoalsmooc
Yes, I used to have 10 !
The Golden rules are also on the first page of their Ex book, so when we have disagreements, behavioural problems, there is an immediate reference.
But using tech may be more difficult in some cultures where technology not available to all homes or where parents may be less well educated or even indifferent. #EduGoalsMOOC
Parents have very high expectations of their children usually and they also tend to believe that their child is a unique case - which is true. each child IS unique but they need to know that you can deal with this without showing favouritism over other children #edugoalsmooc
A5: Multiple invitations to active participation in events, conversations, etc. and providing opportunities at different times to accommodate parents' schedules. Continuing communication of information without overkill.

Absolutely! When Ts´ leadership is very cuestionable, there lies the doubt if she-he is doing things right...or at least to parents´ expectations #EduGoalsMooc
But using tech may be more difficult in some cultures where technology not available to all homes or where parents may be less well educated or even indifferent. #EduGoalsMOOC
@MottHallBridges we make calls, send emails, have a parent letter, post on our FB and IG accounts, host workshops, and never give up if only 1 or 2 parents show up. There is no perfect way of doing things, you just have to keep trying and be consistent. #EduGoalsMOOC
A6: To love their children as if they were your own. This sacred trust is all the more poignant in light of recent school shootings in the U.S. #EduGoalsMOOC
A6: Parents are very sensitive about their children. I know I am about mine. It's important to be mindful of the words we use when talking about someone's child. #EduGoalsMooc
Yes! This!! 👇
Especially with teens, we teachers should be guiding them when they make mistakes with their behaviour, not be a petty authoritarian who constantly dishes out punishments (goes for parents too)

There are parents who struggle with life and its difficulties - let's not only think of an ideal western world of affluence. There are children learning in dire overcrowded awful classrooms with minimal affordances! #EduGoalsMooc
A7: One great website that has an abundance of resources on strategies for specific behaviors (impulsivity, name calling, defiance etc.) is https://t.co/oqPcPlCiUb#EduGoalsMooc
There are many great websites and apps and I look forward to learning more from our participants - but we need parent access, tracking systems, communication with T - if not all at least some of these features #EduGoalsMooc
So true and I told my Ss: I will treat you and teach you the same way I´d like my own children to be taught and treated: respect, care, love Values that had no time or place: they should be here with us until the end of the world! #EduGoalsMooc
A5 Remember that a parent's interaction with you may be the one that defines their impression for future interactions with schools. It's important that they are welcomed, respected and heard #EduGoalsMOOC
At my centre we use @Schoology as a support platform - this is great for adults just as any Moodle or similar LMS would be to keep a class together #EduGoalsMooc
The second resource is a book which I would recommend to any teacher written by Jill Hadfield - "Classroom Dynamics" a treasure trove of ideas to develop a cohesive well managed and bahaved class #EduGoalsMooc
Thank you for the amazing conversations at today’s #EduGoalsMOOC chat! Continue to learn with us this week, Unit 5: Teaching as a Collaborative Process https://t.co/Jg9V01n86E
