We are going to be talking about How To Fit it All In - discussing ideas on how to fit all the curricular outcomes we have in to our year planning. #espechat
A1 Well, after all the testing, pulling kids out, school events here and there...when it's all said and done we get down to the nitty gritty and it feels a little something like this trying to get to everything #espechat
A1 - PERFECT question. Thought of this yesterday how I am so far off from what I planned to do this year..Seminars, class cancellations, testing, behavior, push ins, students progressions all reasons for this. Always will be a work in progress and just doing what I can #espechat
Extremely frustrated with the poor service from @TwitterSupport trying to fix my compromised @Twitter account. Have followed every direction 2x The autobot support prompt is a joke. I want to talk to an ACTUAL person! But Hey there!, #espechat
It's seriously crazy right?! Not to mention the days where you spend some time passing out pictures, picture order forms, flyers for an event that's happening, honor roll certificates...oh my lanta! #espechat
Sorry Mike, that's super frustrating. I just changed my settings in hopes that I can protect it a little more now! Welcome and hope you can forget about it for a little bit #espechat

@pe4everykid, @TwitterSupport, @Twitter
Yeah behaviour is always an obstacle - mostly the behaviour of poor attitude not wanting to try. It drains you some days and throws your plan out of whack. #espechat
A2: look at my school calendar first and then break the year into time frames based on when School breaks are. From there I assign unit blocks into the frames based on what I want to hit and when. #espechat
A2: Super untech, but I write it on the school calendar in pencil and have it posted on my wall right over my desk. It is constantly changing. #espechat
A2) My work situation requires a lot of changes. I tend to take it one month at a time but have all of the things I want to teach laid out (just don't know the order yet). #ESPEchat
We use an old fashioned Mac calendar with year planned out. Pencil of course!! (It looks a lot different in April then it did in September)!! #espechat
A2: Well, I had one.... it's tossed so many times...now it's all Hellison, understanding standards and how we are going to get awesome stuff in, if we work together! And LOTS of rewards for the little things....#ESPEchat
A2 Right now, my team has had the same layout for the longest time. Rotating recreational games, floor hockey, base games, volley tennis and track & field. I've tried switching it up where I can by adding spikeball, cricket, skyros, & cup stacking so far 1/2 #espechat
A2 it’s not pretty but I go with outside time, fitness testing, throwing and catching, dodging/fleeing/pathway/ striking, fitness testing and more outdoor stuff and sprinkle some stuff in between #espechat
A2 Word on the street is we are moving to non-mixed grade level classes. Separate 7th & 8th grade classes. I personally am excited for this because it means we'll need to do some revamping of our year plan/curriculum. Would love to see it build off of each other 2/2 #espechat
A2:. Normally do it in weekly blocks by grade levels touching on the standard, grade level outcome and emphasis. Our schedule rotates every 5 days so it usually will work most of the time. #espechat
A2 I always put together a tentative plan for the school year. Hard to stick to sometimes (such as this ridiculously cold and snowy early spring). #ESPEchat
A2: we have a simple google sheet that I attempt to follow...I can't always stay on track...it includes all of our must knows for our standards based grading #espechat
I was part of a small group that created next years district plan. Two months to teach groups of skills. We all do it at the same time. That way kids who move within the city don’t repeat a lot of stuff. Thanks @exercys#ESPEchat
having to constantly change the "plan" is what frustrates my type A ness. (it was in the plan). To avoid stressing out I try to avoid doing it but I do like how you have the topics underneath the activities. It might help me to focus on Standards 2-5 better! #ESPEchat
No, the timing of my units are different than last year and I've been able to get to more this year. I think last year we got to 4 units, this year I actually got to teach floor hockey (something I didn't do last year) #espechat
Been doing this for about 5 years now, if you need help or have questions let me know. I know @smsandino does this too. @BermanLisa is one of the leaders of the whole event! #espechat
Kevin, I think one time, you, me and @Mr_C_PE were talking and you mentioned that SHAOE had recommended yearly plans based on the number of days per week you have students. Do you know happen to know where that is located? #espechat
A2 I also try to follow the community Rec Dept calendar as I like to show my little ones where they can get more. Lots of extensions at the Rec Dept #ESPEchat
I think we should stick to the plan and save those finds for the next time rather than trying to play everything we see. Balance in the force. #espechat
A3 I am 1 of 9 elementary schools in our district and we have 10 core units we all teach and then can cover other agenda items as we see fit and with the equipment our school has #espechat
A3: we built it so we could revisit certain skills a second time. We tried to spread these out. We also tried to make sure that we had as many skills and outcomes covered as we could #espechat
A3: I look at school calendar, weather, then I look at what holes my Ss have. If I couldn't get to something last year, I make sure to get it in this year. #espechat
Q3 - Standards, my passions, students passions. A nice mixture. My students love to dance freely. If they are enjoying it and being active - DANCE AWAY #espechat
Fitness testing usually first (following some icebreaker/team building type stuff). S create fitness plans based on their scores for the year. Retest 1/2 through then towards end of year. All other filled in based on weather trends #espechat
A3 I design mine based partly on convenience, partly on student interest and my interest, partly on importance of skill, and obviously the standards #espechat
A3: I always want to hit benchmarks with my students so when I see gaps. I make sure to give that a longer unit the next year. And I always have units on team building and dance. #espechat
A3 We take a look at the previous year, we look at what's going on for the new year as well. Like this year for 14 weeks we taught character lessons every Monday which shortened the schedule so we had to account for that #espechat
A3) Based on what we have done in the previous years, rotating equipment in the county (movement education, heart adventure, table tennis, quick start tennis), themes (Olympics, world cup, march madness) #espechat
A3: In the past it was using the movement and skills wheel from Children Moving, but then to Standards based, now it's meeting students where they are at and working on lifetime sillls! #ESPEchat
A3: I always over-plan and keep track of what I did not get to in a unit and make sure I get to it the following year if at all possible... but as we all know as physical educators, we must be FLEXIBLE in our dynamic field. #espechat
Yearly reflection is key. I look back and plan ahead. Throwing ... I covered many times throughout yr. Ss struggle with this. Confuses OHT AND uHT
#espechat
A3: This is my 1st year teaching middle school PE after having taught elementary for 11 yrs. Some many trial & error moments for me this year. Planning for nxt yr based on knowledge gained this yr. Middle grades love choice & I want to include that #espechat
A3: It was tough because I started in late feb and had no idea what my students had learned earlier in the year. Unfortunately, they had an awful experience the first semester so I tried to make PE fun again for them. #espechat
A3: New school. All new PE staff. Slowly infusing Standards based instruction, shifting the culture from "play" to "learn through movement" and building classroom leadership. #espechat Lots to do
Things like I instant activities and mid-unit activities are he things I wavier on. I will keep my unit plans. They just look different after a #physed Twitter search. #espechat
Late to the party! Ian Schwindel from Montville NJ. A3) Try to build off the previous year and structure how much further i can go with each grade based on how units went. Usually stays consistent but there are some circumstances that change things for sure #espechat
A3: I want to plan more around PBIS for nxt yr. Our school theme is PRIDE (Perseverance/Respect/Integrity/Dependability/Excellence) & I want 1 PRIDE word to be a part of every lesson. (i.e what does respect look like in cooperative activities) #espechat
Not too much variation. Typically when there is a gap it’s because I tried to squeeze too much into a shortened/constrained unit, so I know it’s gonna be a priority the next year review my reflection journal and use my first unit (training camp) as a barometer. #espechat
A3b definitely forgot to add available facilities (sometimes you run into construction as we will the beginning of 18-19 school yr), standards (at least for me, we don't discuss them much as a dept.) #espechat
Had to bypass most of my gymnastics unit. Taught the basics of gymnastics so I covered my bases. Kids had enough fun with Olympics they didn't notice. #espechat
A4) I am rewriting my yearly plan and I am getting away from whole group activities and going with stations. Allows more activity variety and able to reinforce skills throughout the year in multiple ways. #espechat
A4: I would have timed my hockey unit for the drizzle and the frisbee for the sun. I got it backwards this year. Also I might have to cut a unit for time because of unexpected school events affecting PE schedule #espechat
A4 I would add more opportunities throughout the year to practice skills (looping). Start fitness testing at the beginning of the year, track progress throughout the year. #espechat
A5) I'm always looking to add stuff but its at the cost of removing something. This year I was able to get LaCrosse equipment but it will probably cost me softball. #ESPEchat
I agree. Mostly for my older grades because I find I focus too much on sports and not enough on skills and just games to practice basic skills. #espechat
#espechat. Maybe subtract fitness testing. I like the idea of students creating fitness plans/goals but it takes so much time to complete fitness testing especially in large classes. I would like to add maybe some nontraditional games or activities
A4: more exploratory learning. 1st year I am really building up leadership and the importance of a safe learning environment. Sets up next year for taking chances and improving yourself, rather than comparing to peers #espechat
#espechat I would add a ton. Where do I begin. Get away from specific sports with younger Ss and more movement. Adding plickers and plagnets next year. More goals and self assessing more of Ss interests Gamifications. Challenges levels. Projector gifs etc
A4: I'd love a Wellness Day. 8th graders are so used to playing basketball. I'd love a day to invite Zumba/Yoga/Mindfulness/Fitness Instructors/Gardeners to come in like I did @ elementary level to teach kid wholistic approach to physical literacy #espechat
A4: I used Plickers the traditional way at certain times during the last couple years I taught but never got to try our the PLAGNET system. I wish I would have "given it a go" before I retired....my loss. Thanks @PhysEdDepot for getting all that going for everyone #espechat
Q4 - Add way more basics - rules, procedures, behavior. Basically BORE them until they understand I will not proceed. Basically bore myself also I guess - subtract, idk.. stumped. #espechat
A4:big thing is an assessment map. Planning out seesaw submissions, forms assessments for multiple data points, &my projects I like to do w/ S’s. also want to build in more non-traditional activities between standard skill based for example find a place for slack lining #espechat
Yes, they get to practice some skills a ton in that format, like for us, we do jump rope every time in stations and they have grown so much. the kids love stations. #espechat
Was thinking you could still have a duty team, equipment manager and coach. Use cross curricular team names: all have to be dinosaur names or animals from grasslands. #espechat
Do you use stations all year long or do you mix in in with whole class activities? Have you used Jump Rope Ninja stuff that is always going around Twitter? #espechat
I'm starting to want my Ss to learn non-traditional activities. Too many of my Ss dislike basketball, soccer, and volleyball because they play it so much. I want to provide new opportunities to try new activities to become lifelong movers. #ESPEchat
A4: more opportunities for Ss to succeed in their daily classroom with more movement breaks! I'm trying to figure out how to get my Ss swimming and skateboarding and parcor for next year... am I nuts or what? LOL #espechat
A4 Would like to have added a lawn games mini unit during my rec sports unit + lacrosse! Additionally, I would like to have a fitness unit where we rotate turns in the exercise room & make time for hr monitors, camouflage fitness activities, splat points like OTF #espechat
A4: More emphasis on student led lessons...where students have input in the activities we learn for each standard. Middle School Ss get bored easily & need challenges often. I also want student designed rubrics. #espechat
Be a Gamemaster! Always have Ss asking if they can create a game. So instead of meeting with them, I created the Gamemaster sheet for them to work out the details of their game before we sit down & chat on the finer details https://t.co/3qo9j23ZVe#physed#pegeeks
A4) I’ve spent a bunch of free time developing an online component for 3-5. They have fitness profiles through google and I would like to map out assessments, fitness logs, short quizzes, and mini projects on some of the items we simply don’t have a lot of time for #espechat
A5 biggest obstacles are School wide assemblies, field trips, snow days and PARCC testing. Lose so much time to these. My gym is also lunchroom and auditorium. #espechat
I do stations pretty frequently, as a short activity. give students about 2 minutes at 4 different stations (a station in each corner). takes about 10 minutes or so. can set a tabata if you want so they know when to switch. then we do a group activity. #espechat
A5: Biggest obstacle this year was learning a new curriculum, focusing on middle school standards instead of elementary, learning who middle schoolers are developmentally & shifting the culture of PE to be more about learning than play #espechat
Q5 -Students behavior - way around it. NEVER. minimize it I think so.. smaller class sizes, co teacher, gender classes(although I am against it) , and stricter school rules and punishments #espechat
A5: not enough contacts and some of the unknowns. Field trips, assemblies, other random events. My student population can be transient so I often get a group of new S’s that I am trying to catch up while moving the group forward #espechat
I feel the same way about dance. Fourth graders with square dance and my seventh with Tinikiling. #ESPEchat They start out "hating" it and then they want to keep going.
jump rope, scooters, hula hoops, throwing targets, dribbling, scarves, cups, jump bands, fitness exercises, written assessment, balloon volleyball, etc can all be done as station activities. #espechat
A5 Time & days that can be used a bit more resourceful! You can't really control the added extras such as school events, add-ons on curriculum such as character building lessons as well as passing out flyers, picture forms, pictures, handouts (#physed can do it all) 1/2 #espechat
A5: time is the real factor. You can’t have enough days to feel like you can complete anything. Just when you get going it’s time to move on. I think the best way to minimize it is to try and blend units so that students can see the skills cross relate #espechat
A5 I definitely think we can be more resourceful on days where we maybe do a pick-a-sport (class competitions) or it's assembly/rally schedule so we do a jog/walk or agility day. I think time can be used more wisely in some of those situations 2/2 #espechat
Self assessment and reflection through inquiry although lower grades I am going to try to capture skill also. They also record their dance routines etc and insert them into @Seesaw . #ESPEchat
Did something similar @ elementary level but didn't have organized document. I will try this for middle school & have them sign up for a day to share the activity. I would add a part about how students make sure everyone is included #espechat
We had a soft roll out of PBIS last year followed by a hard roll out for it this year. It's definitely been a transition as we have some to little buy-in. Can understand this! #espechat
A5: Figure out what is important with the time I have. Having better translations and dealing with classroom behavior, been doing much better with all this. #espechat
I’ve found because of the crease boundary (3-5 we use the bball key instead of a semi circle),teaching basic defensive strategy is something students of all abilities can be successful with. When a less-inclined S blocks one of our alpha-athletes there’s nothing better! #espechat
