A1: When I taught in a classroom, they were collaborative, lively and fostered community first thing in the morning, setting a positive and collegial tone for the day. #EdutopiaChat
A1 morning meetings can be varied. But there’s always the morning message, an -ism of the day (quote or saying), and our usual routine of the flag ceremony, oath to the country, and a prayer. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Students run them and they sit on the carpet in a circle. We say a chant to remember expectations, pass a ball around to greet everyone, and then the daily acitity (roses, buds, and thorns, a question, or a social story). #edutopiachat
A2: At the middle school level they are called Responsive Advisory meeting. My RAM takes place at the desks in a collaborative fashion. The arrival welcome at my door, announcements posted, and the acknowledgements happens in groups or in partners. #EdutopiaChat
#edutopiachat A1 My morning meetings are mainly social/emotional. We follow a routine with different daily responses, and more choice on Mondays and Fridays.
A1 Make it fun, flexible, and fulfilling! In grades 1-2 I use morning meeting routines for those Ss who do better with routines, but mix it up enough to help those same Ss learn to adapt to changes as necessary. #edutopiachat
Morning meetings are like a family starting off the day of work together. We check in. How is everyone? Not worried about content until I know how my fam (Ss) is feeling! #EdutopiaChat
A1 In full honesty, I sometimes dispense with morning meetings and get my students dive into any unfinished work OR work on their big projects. The extra time is always a godsend #EdutopiaChat
A1: MM always a great community building time. Usually a time to share. Often a time to problem solve. Sometimes a Morn Message. Generally just a time to come together to get the day started in a positive. 👍🏻 #EdutopiaChat

A1. Advisories with high levels of connectedness work on creating a healthy community by addressing the way Ss relate to one another. Advisors consciously help Ss work out issues among themselves & talk about the importance of treating each other with respect. #edutopiachat
A1: We have class meetings on Friday. It is a relaxed setting where we look at issues like digital citizenship, anti-bullying, study skills, and more. #edutopiachat
A1. It's funny, there were no high school morning meetings when I was teaching. But I started almost every class by pausing to ask for a story or insight. It was a way of saying: There is more to this than academics. We are here to open up & take chances together. #EdutopiaChat
A1 at the start of the school year I usually lead the morning meetings. But towards the middle part, I start letting my students handle it. They can do a read aloud or share a news article they just read. #EdutopiaChat
A1. As students get closer to adulthood, schools often become more isolating and impersonal. Advisory programs offer the structure to meet students' developmental needs, because it is the one place in school where students are intimately known as a 'whole child'. #edutopiachat
I managed to infuriate my entire morning advisory class today by enforcing a school rule and by the end of the day most of the school heard what happened 🙄 #EdutopiaChat so I need to rebuild tomorrow but also be firm

A1: I teach 8th grade English at a small, rural school in Virginia. I like to greet my kids each morning, hand out pencils, and make sure my kids are ready for the day. We talk about what they are reading, and what they need to get off their chest to start the day. #EdutopiaChat
I brought challenges from my own life to our morning meetings. One week, I shared that I struggled with motivating myself to wash dishes after eating dinner. They came up with a plan for me and followed up. When I "triumphed", we all celebrated! #edutopiachat
A1: Circle up! Everyone’s sitting at the same level. Everyone is greeted and gets an opportunity to share (We’re into “Would you rather...?” right now). We finish up with a quick Activity (Current favorites: Dude, Ten, and The Fraction Song). @edutopia#EdutopiaChat

A1 Desire for similar robust interactions in my online graduate level program, however, I tie the check in to the course content for the week and have Ss apply content to an experience so folks can learn from one another. #edtech#EdutopiaChat
A1 In our community, Ss begin by greeting one another and then respond to a SEL prompt or share something about their day! We end our meetings by setting personal goals for the day. #edutopiachat
A1: I find the most powerful student meetings are personal. They provide an opportunity to connect with each individual student and learn about the unique challenges they are facing each day. #EdutopiaChat
A1 I've just added Yuks and Yeahs- shared by an Edutopia community member on Facebook- I have 4-8 Ss each day identify something they say Yeah! or Yuk! about to start our day. It is optional but most are very eager! #edutopiachat
I think we are going to talk about priorities and making time for things that are important. I’m just glad my admin backed me and told every single one they had an unexcusdd tardy! #EdutopiaChat
A1. An advisory at the start of the day, when properly structured, can promote social development, assist Ss in their academic programs, facilitate +ve involvement among Ts, administrators, & Ss, & provide adult advocacy & a positive climate in the school community. #edutopiachat
Since I do not have a separate time for advisory in my day, I weave RAM/MM into the do now and the content lesson. I use the acknowledgements to share out do now and to re engage the community. I use the Activity to teach both my social studies content and SEL. #edutopiachat

Happened over time. I try to be honest, and started asking if they wanted to get our meeting started. It's gotta to the point where they don't want to share if I'm absent. Our morning meetings have definitely created a sense of community #EdutopiaChat

A2: On our question days, sometimes the question revolves around learning goals for the day, and students can share their goal. We also go over our daily scheduled what we will be working on as far as academics. #edutopiachat
A2: As educators, we all know that habits of mind like self-direction and self-management are vital to academic success. Morning meetings can help refine those habits of mind through targeted reflection and goal setting. #Edutopiachat
A2 Skip counting greeting-start at 0, go in circle counting by 3’s. When we get to 21, that S is greeted & sits. Continue again at 0. I provide a # line/list of #’s for Ss who need it. It helps Ss w/low confidence & more capable Ss challenge themselves to not look #edutopiachat
A2: Sometimes we start with grammar warm ups to help students understand common mistakes, or discuss concepts they may have struggled with during precious lessons. Other times we discuss agenda items so they know how the class will run that day.#EdutopiaChat
A2. Ss greet each other respectfully & share interesting, meaningful activities that draw them together; become open to diverse people/culture; ready to take a stand for equity. Such connections/understandings foster awareness of social biases & can be transforming. #edutopiachat
It could be as simple as "How are you feeling today" or complex as "What went well for you yesterday and how can you use those strategies to support your learning today?" #EdutopiaChat
A2: We sing songs and beats together connected to curriculum. Middle schoolers are not above it! I connect share questions to what students are anticipating reading about in class that day as well. @edutopia#EdutopiaChat
A2: I don't have a morning meeting since I teach small groups. I do ask my questions at the beginning of each small group that encourages that units vocabulary. #EdutopiaChat
A1: In my grade 4 class we go over our schedule, talk about hw difficulties and review a provocation to set the tone for the day usually followed by a discussion or debate. Helps to bring us together and set our routines #edutopiachat#IBPYP
A2: With novice level language learners, we incorporate visuals with adjectives and other descriptors to initiate target language and bring in the SEL element. I immediately have a grasp for emotions each S is feeling to start the day. #EdutopiaChat
With harder skills, I make it a point to let my kids know I appreciate their hard work and dedication. I also highlight student growth! A2 #EdutopiaChat
A2: By goal setting. Every morning we make simple, attainable goals for ourselves. The following day we discuss and share if we met them or need more time to reach them. #EdutopiaChat
A2. During our unit on redundancy and concision, I made sure that my contributions to our discussion were either really, really redundant—or really, really concise. The kids caught on ; ) #EdutopiaChat
A2 the read aloud part is always a good way to explore different kinds of texts or genre of literature. News articles can always be related to content from science and social studies. #EdutopiaChat

A2. Hmmm... Morning advisories and homeroom periods provide students an opportunity to interact with teachers and one another in a non-graded atmosphere that isn't focused on either content or assessment. #edutopiachat
A2 I remember doing a morning meeting where students watched a video of an a cappella group sing and try to do the same with one of their favorite songs...it was funny seeing my students with their cracking or deepening voices sing #EdutopiaChat
#EdutopiaChat A1. I do movie quote Monday, trivia Tuesday, wacky video Wednesday, brain teaser Thursday and wonder jar Friday with the star student reveal. Every morning there is a greeting, sign language sign of the week, & TTYP prompt (?) to promote sharing and listening.
We start everyday with a morning meeting. We connect and then present what is happening in the day and then learners use an app we created to sign up for the day. It allows 647 learners to sign up and have a voice in their learning path for the day #EdutopiaChat

A3 We use interactive modeling to show how to participate. And I have assigned talking buddies so all must help. For ELLs, sentence starters and extra adult support! #EdutopiaChat
A3 always a challenge but I decided to look at tech to help me. I set up a packet once and asked them to put their shares, thoughts, and reflections. #EdutopiaChat
A3: Let then be wary and feel it out first. Allow them to sit near someone you know they’re comfortable with. Choose shares and activities that connect to the interests of reluctant participants. They’ll come around. #EdutopiaChat@edutopia
A3: Offer MANY ways to participate (fully or otherwise). Make your morning meetings universally designed, in several formats and thinking beyond oral and physical participation. #EdutopiaChat
A2. Judgment call. You don't always have to connect a morning meeting to academics, though I did when the opportunity presented itself. Sometimes, I just worked on the relationship, knowing the academics would follow. #EdutopiaChat
A3: High expectations and differentiation are key. Students will rise to the challenge if you build those relationships. Every kid must know you value what they bring to the classroom community and this is vital for our students who struggle most. #EdutopiaChat
A2. Regardless of focus, advisory ought be supported by curriculum. Some choose to use an existing curriculum, others choose to write their own. The curriculum can help connect academic preparation, thought patterns, interests & learning to Ss’ career aspirations. #edutopiachat
A3: By allowing them to “pass”. It allows them to be involved in the meeting, still choosing what’s best for them at that time. Passing is still communicating. Slowly but surely, reluctant or shy students step out of their comfort zone. I never rush the timid. #EdutopiaChat
A3 I create different ways for students to participate in class: small groups, anonymous polling, moderating a group discussion. Ss have choice when and how they engage...and when they do validate, validate, validate! #edutopiachat
A3 #EdutopiaChat I haven’t been able to ensure this all the time, but a couple of days a week, the meeting manager (student) selects a question to ask and I strongly encourage all students to participate on those days.
A3: Students share their ideas when they are comfortable feeling vulnerable. That has to be modeled not forced. It usually requires patience and consistency. #EdutopiaChat
A3 I keep most parts of morning meeting optional. I intentionally teach Ss that everyone is different and need different things to help them. Then when I do need to support or facilitate the needs of Ss in MM, it isn’t a big deal to any Ss involved or onlookers. #edutopiachat
Everyday is themed: Mindful Monday, Tell Me Tuesday, etc. We sit at eye level and use a talking piece to hold when sharing. Usually non- academic conversations because my students are like my own kids. There is so much more to them that I want to know! #EdutopiaChat
A3 I always have 2 or 3 mentor students in my class. Students that are always eager to help and patient and consistently model kindness serving as the welcoming committee, and model various strategies to new students #EdutopiaChat this has worked for 3rd and 4th grade
A3. A strong advisory program helps Ss get connected to one another in meaningful ways. Through class discussions, democratic classroom decision-making, Socratic seminars, and other activities, ALL Ss (including ELLs) can form bonds. #edutopiachat
A1: We use the @SanfordHarmony SEL program. During “Meet Up” we
1. Greet each other
2. 1-2 Ss share something we can ask questions about
3. Check in with our classroom goals
4. Identify a high and a low of the day
5. Play a quick community builder game

Sometimes we gotta work it in anywhere we can. I've started doing SEL chats in our walks to specials- I walk near a child or group who needs a little facilitation or support in some areas- boost of confidence, motivation, etc. #EdutopiaChat

It takes so long to build and also you have to calibrate it well. Not so vulnerable that it's scary, but not so boring that there's no emotional buy-in. #EdutopiaChat

We do something like that called a WASH- We All Speak Here- where small groups (3-4) discuss a question and then offer one response from their group, created out of their conversation. #edutopiachat

A4 Ss naturally help MM evolve by taking/accepting more risks. I keep things optional & find it increases participation through year. When Ss aren’t pushed, they generally push themselves and students know best know how hard to push. I just facilitate those efforts. #edutopiachat
A4: With community and trust, conversations can get deeper, SEL more profound and the tone for the day can be even deeper and more positive. #EdutopiaChat
A4: Conversations become more authentic. Many times, children want to say things they think you want to hear. Goals are broad, often reflecting or mimicking your ideals. As children become relaxed and trusting, they speak from their heart. They discuss their needs. #EdutopiaChat
A4: The ownership, leadership, and running of the meetings shifts completely to the students. I will be there to provide soft skills if needed and to make sure conversations are equitable. However, students should be empowered to lead. #EdutopiaChat
A3. Helping Ss feel safe, acknowledged, valued and competent is essential for students social-emotional and academic growth. Greet new Ss with a friendly smile. Seat them with a buddy to help them feel welcomed. Give lots of encouragement and praise. #EdutopiaChat
A4: Students want to share more personal struggles they have, which teaches everyone that they have common ground. At this point in the year, we are all pretty bonded. They thrive in an environment when they know they are cared and are safe to process. #EdutopiaChat
A3 #EdutopiaChat begin with low-risk greetings and activities; ones that don't involve all the attention on one S or ones that require Ss to know each other's names/things about each other. Partner greetings, small groups, LOTS of T modeling, and even more SMILES :)
A4 Ss become more comfortable sharing and more independent in their thought. Also, the get better at listening and they know that I will listen to them. #EdutopiaChat
A4: I can gradually release conversation to them. I say things like “Greet your buddy, ask them how they’re doing, and ask follow up questions. Keep the conversation going for X minutes.” Teaches them to show interest in one another and use inquiry to find out more. #EdutopiaChat
We used to, but we found the need as educators to use those spare moments to engage students in SEL learning as well as incorporate louder movements as we move to specials. We stop going to PE, skip slowly to art, or hop quietly to Spanish. #edutopiachat

A4: Children begin to hear each other and expand their own ideals from peer share during meetings. It’s no longer a competition but rather a social circle. #EdutopiaChat
A4. One great thing to think about here is actually faculty social-emotional learning & growth. At @valorcollegiate, faculty participate in the same SEL activities as students, facilitating empathy & trust. https://t.co/iuSg0m7VaJ#edutopiachat
Q4: I find that as the students become more comfortable they are more likely to guide the course of the conversation. This is great-however -it does mean allowing for a few moments for “off topic” convo as they get really comfy..;) #EdutopiaChat
#EdutopiaChat Thanks. We take turns daily being the Meeting Manager. Some like this role and others don’t. What we struggle the most with is allowing others to speak without interrupting or commenting.
I let a student pick a topic on those days that he/she wants to ask the class, such as: Tell me what your favorite TV show is. It’s always interesting what they want to ask of their peers!#EdutopiaChat
A4: You know you have established a classroom community of trust when the students organically create the talkings points and drive the discussion.#EdutopiaChat
A4 I find that as trust builds so does the quality of classroom discussions, support, and overall ability to manage anything that pops up #edutopiachat

A4: Early in the year, we share a lot of our “favorite things” (food, music, colors, etc.) As the year progresses, students organically bring their ideas and concerns to Share Time as a safe space to process. (Most recently: govt shutdown, biased speech) @edutopia#EdutopiaChat
A4. After spending the first month or two jointly creating a format that worked for us, we decided at what points we were ready for kids to take on the meeting jobs ("microphone holder," message writer, reader, etc.) By Dec., kids were 100% running all aspects. #EdutopiaChat
A4. Each school has a different student population and different needs. For this reason each school’s advisory program is unique in its mission, goals, advisor responsibilities, and format. #edutopiachat
My morning meetings are always often off topic...taking off on those teachable moments....or at least I like to think we go off on tangible tangents! ;) #edutopiachat
Pre-set them. Give them the next days prompts and have them write out an answer. Or...have them share what another person is saying. Sometimes I have a share what your neighbor said day. #EdutopiaChat
I always tell my ELL students that they are brilliant.
When they go for a job interview, no one will ask them to read a passage in a minute.
They will, however, ask them if they can speak multiple languages and THAT will give them an edge. #Edutopiachat
A3: Digital game-based learning allows all students to learn together in small collaborative groups. It encourages other intellectual abilities besides reader/speaker such as explorer, navigator, creator, battler, problem-solver, etc. #edutopiachat
#EdutopiaChat Yes, we pass a squishy apple around. I have about five students who endlessly want to interrupt to ask questions or challenge what the speaker is saying, which of course squashes my cautious ones. I have to enforce the rules, which is wearing.
This week one of our morning meeting discussions was Instagram because I had to block a few Ss from following me. I asked "Who is 13 or older?" and no one raised their hand. I then asked "Who here has an Instagram?" and 1/3 of Ss raised their hands. We had a chat. #edutopiachat
A5: I had dedicate time for the development of SEL each week for my students. I wish I could develop my students SEL skills on a consistent basis so they would be more prepared for academic success. #EdutopiaChat
A4 #EdutopiaChat As the sense of community builds, so does trust in the calssroom. Ss open up more during sharing and activities, and the interactions between Ss & Ts and Ss & Ss become more "real."
Hmm. I wonder if you could meet with those students individually or as a group outside of meeting time to dig deeper into problem solving. clearly there is an unmet need... #EdutopiaChat
A5: I were still in the classroom so I could take all these amazing ideas and put them into action TOMORROW. This community is the best, y'all. #EdutopiaChat
A4. Many advisors want to jump right in and begin holding discussions and helping students with their questions. Even if trust is strongly established at the beginning of the year, it needs to be reestablished throughout the year. #edutopiachat
"RT Julsciteach: Q4: I find that as the students become more comfortable they are more likely to guide the course of the conversation. This is great-however -it does mean allowing for a few moments for “off topic” convo as they get really comfy..;) #EdutopiaChat"

Yes! I agree with having a center piece and a talking stick.... and it is okay to have kids sit outside of the circle if norms are not being followed. When they are ready to join, the group can allow them back in. #EdutopiaChat
A4 The meetings become more organic as the sense of community grows stronger. They can be more of a free flowing conversation where students show their interest in and concern for each other. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Morning meetings start as soon as Ss walk in-Ss read & respond to the Morning Message & wk on team tasks w/table groups. Then we circle up, greet each other, read the message, & share out answers w/discussion. Last, we finish w/a closing activity. #edutopiachat@EmersonD100
A5 I wish all Ss had a fun, relaxing, & engaging start every day. The first minutes of a day can make or break an attitude towards learning. Why not begin with our best efforts to address the MOST significant challenge our Ss face each day-social emotional learning #edutopiachat
A5: I wish more teachers realized the student is more important than the content. Sometimes we cut morning meeting short or teachers choose not to do them because test scores matter more or take priority. People should always matter most. #EdutopiaChat
The hard part of teaching is that we're always working in the space where kids don't know. It would be easier if they already knew how to do these things, but then we'd just have to move on to the next thing they don't know, right? #edutopiachat

Q5: In regards to morning meetings, I wish every secondary class period could start with one. Morning meetings aren’t childish; they’re human-ish! @edutopia#EdutopiaChat

A4: Ss begin to run them. As the year progresses, I let the reigns go. Eventually I am taking directions from Ss.
Ss reach the ability to lead MM at their own pace. Some may need a little more time to build #relationships and that’s okay. #Edutopiachat
#EdutopiaChat You read me right! (Your post the other day was very apropos.) We do have several of those folks receiving extra social/emotional attention in different ways.
A4: Some Ss started off very quiet, even with their greeting to the class & would rush through what they shared. Now Ss speak in a loud, clear voice for their community members, they take turns asking questions to show they care about what their peers have to share #edutopiachat
A5: In regards to morning meetings, I wish I had flexible seating options!! I’m so jealous of those cool, innovative classrooms I see online with those mini sofas, bean bag chairs and such. I’d love a “coffee house” style setting. 😂 #EdutopiaChat
A4: We may break some bread, we may do some stretching, we may start the day with music...it really depends on what we need. Certainly, I’ve noticed that making a habit to greet each S daily as they enter increases their engagement with me & class. #EdutopiaChat
A5 #EdutopiaChat In regards to morning meetings, I wish I had more time! (Ss are always bummed when group activity time is over.) ...and I'm always looking for new fun and engaging games to play!
A5: I wish I had more time and didn’t have to worry so much about meeting deadlines and test-prep. I want to provide authentic learning experiences, and sometimes the pacing and state assessments hinder that practice. #edutopiachat
A5: I wish they were so ubiquitous that we didn't need to convince anyone that the time was well worth it. MM should be as normal as lunch. #edutopiachat

A5. I wish administrators would not bombard Ts with administrative activities/duties such that there is little time to actually bond with Ss in the class. #edutopiachat
A5: That secondary, post-secondary, and graduate educators would take the time to apply the principles of MM to their own classrooms. We learn better when we're safe and known. #edutopiachat
Q5: I wish there was more time to dedicate to them! They help Ss build a community by getting to know each other, learning how to respectfully speak to others, as well as practice listening skills. These meetings give Ss the opportunity to have their voices heard. #edutopiachat

I've found that if I make time for the smaller meetings early in the school year, it pays HUGE dividends the rest of the year. 1 year I had morning meeting, afternoon meeting & closing meeting to deal with SEL. That was a challenging group, but by Feb. we're flying! #edutopiachat

Thank you for a great chat. #EdutopiaChat It was an honor talking to all of the amazing educators in this chat. Please consider bringing your insights to #unlockingheroes a chat on student empowerment Saturday @10 am EST. Would be an honor to have all of your amazing insights!
A5: I wish I had them when I was younger.
I needed a safe space to build relationships. A space to talk about big 9 year old feelings. I needed to know I wasn’t alone, and that there were adults who cared and kids that were the same as me.
