Hi guys! My computer freaked out in the middle of the prechat live video over on Facebook! I am here now. :) Can't wait to learn with you all! #masterychat
Never been to this chat before but if @Stella_Pollard is here then it must be awesome! I’m Brooke from central KY, Tech Coordinator & executive director @EmpoweredSTEM Hi new friends! #masterychat
Hello #masterychat and #mschat. Melissa 7th Grade Science from Upstate NY. Just one more day until my Spring Break so I'm just trying to keep it together!

A1: Be clear, model your expectations, treat the students with empathy. DO not argue with them. Try to understand “why” they are misbehaving. #masterychat
A1 We forget that behavior needs to be modeled and taught. We expect that it has already been internalized, and it's just a relevant to teaching as any curriculum. #MasteryChat
Bless you Jessica! Someone has to love teaching early elementary. It isn't me, but thank goodness we have awesom teachers like you that rock it! #masterychat
A1 Wow! What a great question. I think the key is modeling. If we cannot create expectations together and model them then the year is off to a rocky start. #masterychat
A1 I don't intentionally teach behaviors...I let the class begin organically and then discuss behaviors as they present. Modeling is then authentic. Never have behavioral issues. Academic mistakes are opportunities for growth. #masterychat
Instead of assigning disciplinary consequences when students don't meet behavior expectations, why not deal them as we would deal with academic failures and missteps? https://t.co/L1KAbIVdNB#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A1: I have always wondered why we approach behavior and study skills so differently from content standards. These skills require heavy scaffolding, consistent reflection and revision and should be measured on mastery #MasteryChat
A1: We treat them differently maybe because we see behaviors as easier to correct sometimes. If a student cannot divide three digit numbers, that isn't taught in a day. However, being quiet in the hallway seems easy to correct. We are human. #masterychat
A1: Talking about emotional regulation skills & distress tolerance is a start! Explaining that success might mean something different to everyone, and that’s okay! #masterychat
A1 - I think this hits a great point in that we need to grow Ss in both of these areas and treat their failures behaviorally as opportunities to teach as opposed to incidents which must be punished. I also think tactics like differentiation can applied to behavior. #masterychat
A1: The misconception that behavioural mistakes are always choices. You can choose to behave, you may not be able to choose to read is a standard incorrect belief. Getting to know our Ss goes a long way in setting expectations #masterychat#TeacherMyth#curiositycrew
A1a I think we feel more equipped to handle the academic side. It's hard for us to relate to some of the behaviors we see. Sometimes we also see it as disrespect when in all honesty, sometimes we're seeing behavior that is what the students know. #MasteryChat
A1: Many of us learned to correct academic learning and have gone deeper with assessments but haven’t learned about correcting behavioral learning. So we often try to correct in same way. Time to move beyond discipline and towards restitution and regulation. #MasteryChat
I think a good idea is to do what we do with academic mistakes. Take every opportunity to teach and model replacement behaviors. Modeling and practicing on a regular basis helps students internalize the expectations. #masterychat
A1: I'm not sure that I do. We have to teach behaviors that are appropriate to a task. Otherwise students won't know how to move forward with the academic piece. #masterychat
A1 Model behavior you'd hope from all students through restorative justice. Be empathetic - discuss with students about their behaviors. Explain why certain behaviors negatively affect others and be patient. #MasteryChat
A1 Maybe partially due to our own prior experiences, what we have deemed acceptable/tolerable, we need to be clear, involve Ss in discussion, model behaviors, reinforce #masterychat
A1: When a student makes an academic mistake, we take the time to help them understand how to fix it. When students make behavioural mistakes, we jump to punishment and consequences. #MasteryChat
A1 - Everyone responds to failure and mistakes differently - brush them off, cry, anger, beat yourself up. However, modeling how to respond to mistakes is key. I laugh a lot at myself with my students and try to have a good time rather than over analyze mistakes. #masterychat
A1 - it’s important to know what those expectations are first - then make them explicit to the students. Otherwise they won’t know what to expect #masterychat
Hey! I'm Lindsey. 3rd grade teacher in Wyoming! I'm mostly a lurker here tonight as I finish up the last two classes for my masters! I can't wait to be done and be a more active participant! 3 more weeks!! #masterychat
A1: Behavior mistakes are expectations for everyone...academically Ss are not all on the same level. Apparently they are not all on the same behavior level either. Ekkk which is sad. Behavior-wise we have to keep the Ss in a safe learning environment. #MasteryChat#teachermyth
A1: When adults make negative behavior choices it is even though they know the behavior is not optimal. We UNFAIRLY expect our students to act like adults (when my kiddos are only 12/13). Continuing to emphasize routines and show grace is essential! #masterychat
A1: Behavior is Communication. Address what is under the iceberg and watch behavior change
Use trauma informed practices always in addressing behaviors. #MasteryChat
A1: I think that often it is assumed that students are learning behavior at home and academics at school. We need to remember that the two are intertwined. #MasteryChat
A1: Leader & Me schools seem to rock all behavior components to the Core. Looping @CoachJoshRogers into the thread to comment on his school. #MasteryChat
You know, Rachelle, we live so close to each other! We really need to find some time to meet up in person and have some coffee. 2 hours is totally NOT a long drive to hang out with #masterychat peeps in person!
A1 I think we react more to behavioural mistakes because they affect everyone’s learning and feelings of security. Agreed they still need to learn about their mistakes #MasteryChat
I believe that we respond differently Bc our emotions get in the way...Say hello to my not so little friend, The Ego. Heightened emotions = irrational reactions and overreactions. Reality Based Leadership by @CyWakeman has taught me so much about dealing with The Ego #masterychat
A1 Model, model, model. Our school uses Responsive Classroom and PBIS so we start the year focused on expectations and then revisit as necessary. We created grade level expectations and lessons that are reviewed throughout the year. #MasteryChat
A1b I try to teach better by meeting students where they are, but letting them know what my expectations are and helping them get there by modeling and having patience. I also try not to make them feel bad for knowing what they know...if that makes sense. #MasteryChat
A1: I think we react differently based on expectations. We expect that students “should know how to behave” so we are harder on them when they don’t. Students come to school to learn academics. We must make sure behavior and academics are explicitly taught #masterychat
A1b: We model wrong and right behavior. Ss love being able to "act out" the bad behavior. I also do a lot of role playing. Teaching empathy is a lot of the battle. #masterychat
A1: Behaviors need to be modeled and taught! As teachers we know we need to teach new material, however we forget students need to see behaviors modeled just like new information. #MasteryChat
We identify skills and teach them. Our current skill is initiative. We use children’s literature, videos and modeling to teach what it looks and sounds like and then we recognize good examples during announcement time. #MasteryChat
A1. Oh my... this one has been my year. Never be afraid to work with instructional coaches for engagement and health care teaching professionals, counsellors, and admin to help shape behaviour lessons in class from Sept. to June. Be as consistent as possible! #masterychat
A1: Be clear, model your expectations, treat the students with empathy. DO not argue with them. Try to understand “why” they are misbehaving. #masterychat
A1: Behavior feels like a personal choice, where as academic feels like a mistake. We assume behavior comes into our rooms trained, and then judge our kids (and families) based on the actions in our class. All of it comes down to how WE control OUR emotions. (1) #MasteryChat
A1b: Next year I intend to remind myself daily that kids are kids and my job is to give kids the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and make better choices - academically and behaviorally. (2) #MasteryChat
A1: We all have our own style & personality that transcends into our daily conversations w/ students. There are so many factors. I find for elementary students, we review ex. of high expectations which sometimes needs revisiting during the year. #masterychat
A1 I think because behavior is tied to emotion and it’s hard not to get emotional when behaviors are not what we want/expect. We expect Ss not to understand or know certain things but we don’t expect or anticipate behavior issues. #MasteryChat
A1: In higher ed environments, academic mistakes and negative academic behaviors may share a causal relationship. Ss who do not feel confident in their performance may exhibit behaviors that sabotage their mastery. #MasteryChat
A1: I guess our focus is on the learning to much. But I don't teach math, I teach students! #masterychat We need to accept students and their behaviors where they are...and help them move forward
A1: we expect ss to know how to behave. We give explicit directions, objectives and expectations for learn. but not for behavior. We think behavior is something they should know, but they don’t. We place judgement on beh. because we think they misbehave on purpose. #MasteryChat
A1: Joining late - got caught up in the #CBJ playoff game. We think academic behaviors are “fixable” but behavior is just “misbehaving”. Both are chances to learn & we should treat them as such. #masterychat
A1: At the ms level, I think I “assume” my Ss should have control of their behavior and be able to control themselves in situations. I have to remind myself that their behavior sometimes stems from things out of their control and they don’t know how to react. #masterychat
A1: Academics and behavior regulation can be taught at the same time. Without mastering regulation, availability to any learning will be lost. Clear expectations, model the skills, praise and reinforce, and allow mistakes. #masterychat
Our syndicate is concentrating on pride this year. Pride in work, appearance, attitude - everything. Easier when you have total buy in across the syndicate #masterychat
A1: We need to always look through a fluid & changing lens at behavior and academics. We need to steward our ignorance, and be willing to keep learning. I establish a culture of safety and family from the beginning. #masterychat
A1: I appreciate this question because it identifies a parallel relationship between academic and behavioral challenge. It describes how over-exposed students avoid or escape academic tasks they aren't ready for or lack the stamina to continue meeting. #MasteryChat
A1 guess it depends on the behaviors. Study habits and academics are taught together b/c their link is more obvious. But being a good member of a classroom society is also part of it. #MasteryChat
A1 extension: We know the brain forgets at a predictable rate (see Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve), so how are we reteaching behavior expectations throughout the year? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
Thanks for tagging. As a parent and non-professional educator I’m not sure I can contribute a lot to this particular topic but grateful to listen and for the learning experience. #MasteryChat

A1: We expect the students to know how to behave. In reality we need to teach them these skills just as we teach their academics. We start the school year teaching these expectations and throughout the year revisit and reteach them. #masterychat
A1: academic seem easily corrected and behavior come off as learned over time so they must be dealt with in a way that changes the action right now, which seem crazy to me.
#MasteryChat
A1 We teach behavior expectations by exactly that. Teach them. Not just as a list of rules to be followed, but as a problem-solving strategies. It's just like teaching math. We don't teach math procedures anymore- we teach math understanding now! #masterychat
A1: Many times in HS, we expect Ss to know behavior, and don't think we need to reteach or show how. Next yr- For both areas, set clear expectations help Ss to meet them with accountability #masterychat
A1: For me I can easily expect academic mistakes because Ss are learning a new concept but behavioral mistakes seem to be poor judgment mistakes. So I can model behavior better than I can discuss it with Ss. Show respect get respect. #MasteryChat#gwinchat
Empathy is crucial. It’s so hard to remember that there may not be someone in that Ss life teaching them good behavior when emotions are heightened. Take a breather, step back, assess and then model appropriate responses. #masterychat
Yes...This year I have quite a few students whose behavior is so disruptive that I am unable to teach. So much time is taken away from the other students' learning. #MasteryChat
Hey #masterychat - Fighting the Wi-Fi here at this coffee shop, but glad I made it, even though I’m a bit late. I’m Jori from Northern California and I teach English 10 and AP Lit and AP Lang
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A1b: I think we need to lead by example and make sure Ss are aware of the expectations ahead of time and not wait for an opportunity to make them or assume Ss know them. #masterychat
A1: #masterychat great Q! I think behavior mistakes are considered to be a hinderence/distraction from learning, while academic mistakes are thought to be part of the learning process.
A1: I don’t focus on behavioral expectations unless they are tied to academic outcomes because behavior can be corrected when it happens. Only caveat is that correcting it in real time can be a bit much. #Masterychat
A2 I care about them and the lessons demonstrate that I am thinking about them at all times. Connections are the key to great lessons and great learning. #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A1: Behavioural expectations need to be taught, modelled and reinforced - just like academic skills. We should not assume that students already understand what is expected. #MasteryChat
Developmental! Why is this not more of a focus in our undergraduate preparation. Personally, I wouldn’t hate another class on this simply for understanding my own real life children in addition to my students. #masterychat
Model, model, model in all areas bc SS can’t be expected to behave correctly or academically shine if they aren’t given proper models and expectations #masterychat
A1: I think behavioral mistakes is the knee-jerk response and the conduct puts you on the spot as a teacher when all the kids are looking to you to discipline. It's different from academic mistakes because they need support. Hard question #MasteryChat
And helping them understand the WHY of the skills is just as (or more so) important as what the rules are. It isn't just routines we are teaching, it is ways of interfacing with the world! #masterychat
A1: We expect the students to know how to behave. In reality we need to teach them these skills just as we teach their academics. We start the school year teaching these expectations and throughout the year revisit and reteach them. #masterychat
Great answer! Never assume that they know the expectations. We have to be very intentional communicating the expectations and holding everyone accountable, including ourselves! #masterychat
A1: Many times in HS, we expect Ss to know behavior, and don't think we need to reteach or show how. Next yr- For both areas, set clear expectations help Ss to meet them with accountability #masterychat
Right! And ultimately we need to address both since a gap in behavior can keep academic progress from moving forward in a timely manner. #MasteryChat#TeacherMYth
I’ve seen this at my school, as well. Teachers also worried about not fulfilling academic responsibilities. But if the students can’t learn because of their behaviour, we need to address that, first. #MasteryChat
A2 Honestly this year has been tough..I have tried to show them real connections and to make learning personal for them--ideas beyond food flags and festivals welcome. #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
Good point. And as long as we’re willing to admit this about ourselves, we’ll be able to work on accepting Ss at their current behavioral level. #MasteryChat#gwinchat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
#masterychat A1- I think behavior expectations are minimized when Ss feel a mutual respect in the classroom. Many behaviors can be can be avoided when Ss are actively engaged and feel respected
A1: I believe that descriptive feedback can be practiced more consistently in both academic AND behavioural situations. The positive ongoing feedback teachers provide with academics also applies to behaviours. Ss need to be given areas of strength & growth to evolve. #masterychat
A1: I also tell new teachers you have to be strict out of the gate. It's a lot easyier to relinquish some control than it is to try to regain it. That is a slippery slope. #masterychat
A1: different pedagogies and emotions impact how we respond to behavior. There is always such a push for academics and we assume Ss know behavior but especially depending on their age we have to model the behavior that we expect. #masterychat
A1b: Instead of teaching expectations, most students can be fit from a fresh approach to curriculum and instruction that build fluent responding to basic units of a more complex repertoire. Kent Johnson's Morningside Model is a good example of this approach. #masterychat
A2 Connections are so key! I also come in excited every day, LOL or fake the funk, and act as though I'm teaching the most amazing subject or reading the best book ever! I try to change the room up, incorporate tech, and use hands-on whenever I can. #MasteryChat
You know I just geek out when someone brings up brain science in a chat! Understanding how the brain works helps us understand out students. Helping THEM understand how the brain works helps them understand themselves! #masterychat
A1 extension: We know the brain forgets at a predictable rate (see Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve), so how are we reteaching behavior expectations throughout the year? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2 I give them choices. Flexibility. Options. It demonstrates that I trust them. And I step in when needed. They appreciate all of this and get excited about changes and choices. #MasteryChat
A2b: Connections/relationships w/Ss lay the foundation of trust needed to let student drive the learning, even if I don't know the tool their using.
#masterychat
A1 I don't know why we treat them differently. In both cases we should be using any opportunity to teach and help them learn. I am very transparent in my class. I tell them what I expect and let them know when they are not meeting expectations. #masterychat
A1: I believe that descriptive feedback can be practiced more consistently in both academic AND behavioural situations. The positive ongoing feedback teachers provide with academics also applies to behaviours. Ss need to be given areas of strength & growth to evolve. #masterychat
A2: My students know that I'm constantly exploring new tech, so I talk about conference I've attended, and new things we're going to explore! #masterychat#teachermyth
A1 I don't think the best teachers do respond to academic & behavioral mistakes differently. I've seen them model & teach both-key is investing time in building relationships & trust w/students. #masterychat
A1: It took me a while to figure this out, but I spent a few weeks explicitly teaching my expectations and talking with students about what makes an effective learning experience. We work on building community and norms together and it pays off in the long run #masterychat
A2: I share with my students what makes me excited to learn, I ask what gets my kids excited to learn, and then incorporate that knowledge into my lessons and activities. The more real and engaged I am, the more the kids feel safe to enjoy themselves in my class. #MasteryChat
A2 show how excited I am, create the envt for learning, fun, movement, #stuchoice, focus on relationships first and being present and interacting often, #masterychat
A2: I teach JH they are currently only excited about Zac Efron and Fortnite. They are writing about Zac Efron and Fortnite. I probably spelled those wrong and my kids would make fun of me. #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2: I try to ask about their wants. Here's the skill, here's what the guide says, but how can we make you more into learning this...they like feeling part of the development. #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A1We work really hard trying to figure out what Ss need academically, especially when they struggle. Yet applying this mindset for behaviour seems more challenging. We need to uncover what is causing the behaviour - it's just another way that they are communicating. #masterychat
A1 I don't know why we treat them differently. In both cases we should be using any opportunity to teach and help them learn. I am very transparent in my class. I tell them what I expect and let them know when they are not meeting expectations. #masterychat
A1: I think this is due to the fact that standards are scripted and standardized but what each of us defines as appropriate behavior varies greatly. Don’t teach behavior model expectations. #masterychat
Kids are excited about the random approaches that come with learning.I can related much of what I teach to sports, careers, hobbies and interest of them. It catches their attention and we’re off!My favorite part is greeting them and starting the day with music!! #MasteryChat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2: I give them LOTS of chances to personalize their learning (including a “do something that impresses me” option). I also introduce most topics by using a relevant YouTube video that hooks them right off the bat. #MasteryChat
A2: It’s so important to create lessons geared towards their interests! Fortnite has been trending in my class- instead of banning it I played on their interest and incorporated into my lessons. Students see my passion through my excitement and tone of voice. #MasteryChat
A2 - Let the students lead and I explore alongside them. I point in the right direction - don't tell. Let them discover and become the 'expert' #masterychat
A2 making time to connect with Ss is so important, even quick conversations, being positive, invested and interested in them, passionate for teaching, that attitude is key #masterychat
A2: I usually preview the next lesson the day before. Give them a taste of it to make them curious. Teaching technology is easier because the students talk with their friends prior to class. They come in excited about the lesson. #masterychat
A2 - Choice. Giving them the ability to choose how and what they learn about. I just started 20% time and the student learning and projects coming out of it are amazing. One students wrote 1000 words today without being asked, he just wanted to work on his project. #masterychat
That judgement piece kills me. So much blame is placed on students, parents, home life, socioeconomic status- the list is endless!
We can blame or we can find solutions. I vote for solutions!
#masterychat
A1: we expect ss to know how to behave. We give explicit directions, objectives and expectations for learn. but not for behavior. We think behavior is something they should know, but they don’t. We place judgement on beh. because we think they misbehave on purpose. #MasteryChat
A2: Ask then questions! Learn about their passions! LISTEN! When you take time to make that connection, students are more vested as a learning partner in your classroom! #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A1: I try to deal with behavior and academic problems the same way (if they are fairly minor). A lot of modeling, repetition, and practice. #masterychat
A2: #masterychat I show my enthusiasm for the lesson which gets kids pumped up. Hands on activities, strong class community, positive T-S relationships, and a safe space to fail and grow.
A2: When the lead learner in the classroom builds those relationships/connections with their students, they in turn trust the process and are more inclined to "play into the hook" and get excited about the learning. #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2 adding gaming elements to learning makes it more exciting. I like telling Ss we are going to level up today, or throwing them an “extra life” when they make a mistake. It’s all about framing and if learning feels like a game they are more amped to buy in #MasteryChat
A1: I also tell new teachers you have to be strict out of the gate. It's a lot easyier to relinquish some control than it is to try to regain it. That is a slippery slope. #masterychat
Talk about your life outside of school and ask about theirs. It takes awhile and they look at you like you are crazy at the beginning but with time and effort it changes relationships #masterychat
A2. Even at the College/University level I find that it is the same ideas/behaviours still. Teach them how and where to look, and watch as they discover the best methods on their own. My best teachers in my school days were a guide, not a taskmaster. #MasteryChat
A2: I usually preview the next lesson the day before. Give them a taste of it to make them curious. Teaching technology is easier because the students talk with their friends prior to class. They come in excited about the lesson. #masterychat
A2. Even as a student in higher ed, I’m more likely to pay attention and be engaged in class if the professor (or teacher) is excited about what they do! #masterychat
A2: I try to make learning the content fun and engaging! I get excited about the content. I give the Ss options so that they can learn in a way that’s interesting to them. I try to make sure I know what my students like and what benefits them academically. #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2: WE have to be EXCITED about learning. Our passion about learning transmits to the Ss. Know what makes each student tick is key. Play into their strengths and give choice and control. I use individual reinforcement on a daily basis. #masterychat
A2: make it real to them through connections they like and find relevant in their lives. Love project based learning to allow their passions. We do a lot of activities that real world.
#Masterychat
A1) We started our school year introducing the new PBIS token economy with Pep Rally. I feel we can continue to make it fun for our students. #MasteryChat
A2: Relationships with the students comes 1st! If I am excited about something, the students will be excited because they know and trust me. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A2. Relationships are being built from the time Ss meet me. Finding what's important to them and building on those connections..making learning fun
A2 My latest tool in the toolbox this year is #gamification! I participated in a bunch of #xplap chats this summer and, with the help of awesome educators like @mrmatera and @Stella_Pollard took this leap. Have seen AWESOME results! #masterychat
I also love sharing my experiences and struggles as a student. They learn that they’re not alone when they don’t understand the first time trying something!! #MasteryChat#attitudereflectsleadership
A2 I've recently become a believer of taking learning outside of classroom. Ss need to see how they can take concepts and use them to understand things they care about in their own lives #masterychat
A2) I try to hook students by taking them on an adventure, using mystery or allowing them to lead or have a choice. Ss excitement can be very simple but is so much fun! #masterychat
A2b: My connections have been built over years. I have expectations and they are known. Ss know that they are going to have fun AND learn something each time they come into my class. I always tell them, "You need to leave the room smarter." #masterychat
A2: Make sure to grab their attention with their own interests, listen to them when they talk about what they like/don’t like and incorporate into lessons. #masterychat
#masterychat
A1
We respond differently to behavior because of our own life experiences. I like to treat all of my students like my own. At the beginning of the year we make a family promise. The S make the rules and set the consequences for breaking our family rules.
A2. Projects and choices - totally personalized based on standards. Pick my worksheets or do you own learning. Take the test or design a project. #MasteryChat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2: POP CULTURE REFERENCES! Knowing what the latest interests are and incorporating them can be great. Used some Fortnite references the other day to help teach students about the Berlin Airlift. #masterychat
A2: Am hesitant to use "excitement" with mastery since it sometimes connotes that Ss be entertained by the instructor. Mastery is often a product of tough, grueling work. However, passion for the learning is always preferred. #MasteryChat
A2 I have been adding new tech and using @Seesaw We also have been using flexible seating and sensory breaks. I use a lot of movement and songs/videos to keep kids motivated @GoNoodle#MasteryChat
A2: Finding multiple entry points, ways of learning and ways of representing that learning gives all students the opportunity to see themselves as successful, which will engage them in the learning. #MasteryChat
A2: I LOVE challenge questions/ activities like “crack the code” challenges & I “mustache” you a question. I try to promote risk-taking so I comment on the difficulty of the question and it makes them want to get it! Notice and wonders are also great convo starters #masterychat
A2: To get kids excited, I know that I have to be excited. If I go in and I don’t have my passion with me- the kids are not as excited to learn. #masterychat
A1) too often we hold more weight over the other. Next year I can work to teach about mindset shifts. Just read The Formative Five from @TomHoerr and it talks in detail how to help students to be successful academically/behaviorally #MasteryChat
After reading #TheWildCard, I have been excited about room transformations. The more you know your students, the better you are at connecting any hook to their interests. #MasteryChat
A2: Talk with them about learning, showing them the joy that comes from knowing. Separate learning tasks from performance tasks — you don’t need points or grades to motivate them. Learning shouldn’t be a job, but rather an experience! #masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
Truth! Although I prefer to view it as setting expectations with consistent follow-through and redirection vs strict, which has different meanings for different people. I can be flexible in some areas while still maintaining expectations. #masterychat
A2: I hype up all my math! Lol games, activities, inquiry, discovery...let learners take the lead, switch it, change it, rearrange it! They love a little unexpected and they respond well to my Math fun and craziness! #MasteryChat
A2: POP CULTURE REFERENCES! Knowing what the latest interests are and incorporating them can be great. Used some Fortnite references the other day to help teach students about the Berlin Airlift. #masterychat
A2: Kids are really engaged when you remind them that you are teaching the lesson because you genuinely care for them to learn. I have seen students feel so affirmed when I tell them how much I care about their learning and not setting them up to fail. #MasteryChat
A2: When I was running an after school reading program for 1&2 graders as a part of my diss in grad school, we used to have the kids spin coins, or a game of tic-tac-toe was usually enough to keep them working in between practice blocks. #masterychat
A2:it’s all about relatinships. Those few minutes of conn. with each ss. Allo then to breathe. Change things up. Learn along side them, give choices, listen to their feedback. Let them learn through exploration and play. And for goodness sakes, smile and have fun! #MasteryChat
A1E: I’m no longer in the classroom so I get different Ss coming to my office everyday for various reasons. 90% don’t knock on my closed door!! So, I politely instruct them to go back out, knock, wait for permission to enter, then come in and greet me. #Masterychat#gwinchat
A1 extension: We know the brain forgets at a predictable rate (see Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve), so how are we reteaching behavior expectations throughout the year? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2: make it real to them through connections they like and find relevant in their lives. Love project based learning to allow their passions to come out. We do a lot of activities that are real world and apply to life after high school.
#Masterychat
I embedded a lot of projects into my grids to help them make real world connections. Sometimes I wold even break projects down into grids to keep the engagement up. #masterychat#teachbetter@thegridmethod.
Absolutely...I can not just ignore it (especially if it is highly distracting) - and I can't imagine the students can...I they shouldn't have to. BUT I feel the stress of not being in line with our pacing. #MasteryChat
A2: When we follow their interests, they are hooked. No song and dance needed. They're always engaged in topics that they love. Use these as vehicles to learning, regardless of the subject area. #masterychat
A2 - our #alted#PBL approach helps Ss get excited because they get to learn something they are interested in. We wrap the core subjects around it so it doesn’t feel like the schools they were in before #masterychat
#masterychat
A1 continue
For extreme behaviors I have found that those must be solved first before learning occurs. The only way to conquer that is by building strong relationships built on trust, patience and love.
#masterychat A2- the excitement is in the unveiling! Ss want to do things they enjoy- tap into their passions and let the fun begin - empower them! @dfcusa
A2 My latest tool in the toolbox this year is #gamification! I participated in a bunch of #xplap chats this summer and, with the help of awesome educators like @mrmatera and @Stella_Pollard took this leap. Have seen AWESOME results! #masterychat
A2: I think involvement and choice is key. Kids recognize gimmicks so being excited and enthusiastic must be authentic. Get them involved in the planning and development. #masterychat
A2) let them be in control and own their learning. Find ways for them to show their learning. Not me directing it. Connect with them about matters outside of school not just in #MasteryChat
A2: Your hook better match the person people think you are. The person you are ought to be clear from day one. If you’re not authentic no hook will bring kids in. If you are the hook will become your learning environment and not just part of the show. #masterychat
A2: Engage students throughout the learning process while allowing them to have choice & voice! Word hard, play hard! Kids will appreciate your help more when they feel a connection & believe you care! Listening to students’ stories is a must! #masterychat
"It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept and celebrate those differences." -Audre Lorde
Our diversity is a gift.
Celebrate, encourage, empower. Be kind. Always.
#bekindEDU#KidsDeserveIt#tlap#LeadLAP#g2great#masterychat#eduAR
A1: Ts have to try & remember to be mindful of the goal of student growth when teaching and reteaching Ss academic skills & behaviors no matter how difficult the situation #NeverGiveUp#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A2: To engage students & get them excited about learning I give them more power in helping to decide areas of focus. We are doing a bring your passion to school day where all of us, myself included will showcase our passions! #MasteryChat
A2 I think that routines for procedures should remain constant, but how we present the material should always keep the Ss guessing...Have them always create a product and build off that #MasteryChat
A2. Engagement wirh Kagan has helped but staying ahead of the curve with tech is a golden way to engage. From Google Sites for ed-portfolios to Google Classroom to Quizizz to Prodigy Math to Scratch.. we compete with so much tech outside of school. use it for good! #masterychat
Are you familiar with @RaeHughart's #teachfurther model? It does so much to make learning real and relevant with units built around community engagement. Might be something to look into over the summer! #masterychathttps://t.co/gDnnnGZ8Im
In reply to
@thegridmethod, @deanohaak, @RaeHughart
This is the struggle of mastery. Many Ss will respect the instructional approach that celebrates the Ss emerging as self-directed learners. #masterychat
A3: #PLNs! Both digital and in-person PLNs are critical. If nothing else, find that one person that is always supportive and build a team from there. #bettertogether#masterychat
A2: I am still working with implementing #personalizedlearning in my classroom (year 4) giving students choice & voice in how they learn! We have #handsonlearning & independent learning daily too so I can connect with students! I'm loving it! #masterychat
A3 - Leaning on colleagues and our PLN’s is so important to avoid feeling isolated as an educator, but finding solace with your students is also important. Never forget that you have some amazing relationships right there in front of you! #masterychat
A3: I actively combat it. As a school LEADER it’s lonely in my office. So I go visit classrooms. Engage with Ts and Ss through lunch. Twitter is a great place to shatter solos and be less lonely. #masterychat
A1: I agree with @Rdene915 and I want to add that educators have different expectations for students academically/behaviorally depending on their grade level. Maybe next school year students should decide what actions are deemed. tolerable/intolerable
#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A3: We HAVE to find ways to connect with other educators! The connections aren't going to find you. You have to start the process!
A few great ways to connect:
- EdCamp
- Voxer
- Twitter chats
- CoffeeEDU
- Conferences
#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A3: Always learning from others. It’s easy to get bubbled in our classroom world and forget what’s going on in the rest of the school. Stay connected with Ss and Ts. #masterychat
My 8th grdrs are doing a project comapring their family history to pioneers in west. Ss told me they're going to the library this wkend to use https://t.co/jiWOfesudB and another one said this was the 1st proj she really got into in her 8 yrs at the school #MasteryChat
A3: It is critical to model collaboration for your students and colleagues. Welcome classrooom observations and ask for critical feedback. The energy for growth will spread #MasteryChat
A3: Collaboration with colleagues and my #PLN helps prevent isolation. Must be connected and help one another. Educators can’t operate in silos. #synergy#teamwork#masterychat
Solid book and made me want to do room transformations for our teachers. The element of surprise and carefully planned, connected cross curricular activities - WOWSA! #masterychat
A3 t must be different in different places. It is very hard to be isolated where I work...hard to even be alone for 10 minutes to center yourself #masterychat
A3: As a teacher leader in my school, I put myself out there a lot. If I create something for one teacher or group, I ask around if anyone else needs it. We have to share with our team members. #masterychat
A3: This summer I’m working to build an international #PLC that shares ideas, offers support, guidance, and humor with a unified goal of improving our classroom experiences. The hope being we, as teachers, can always have someone with us as we fill the void. #MasteryChat
A2: To get my 3rd graders excited I try to show enthusiasm about what we are doing - I use words like this is "awesome" and "cool" - and explain why I think that. It gets their wheels turning....and it encourages discussion and questions. #masterychat
A3: #masterychat a lot of my friends are teachers, which helps bc we can talk about our work & truly understand & support each other. I use social media as my extended PLN, I eat lunch in the staff lounge and am friendly w other Ts at my school
A3 You have to be a connected educator especially on your campus...Go out of your way to meet the other campus teachers...Our campus would host a teacher meet & greet...Broke the ice for the year and got everyone connected to each other #MasteryChat
A3: I spend significant parts of my planning connecting with teachers on my team, guidance counselors, and others. Using this time to connect allows us to build relationships and also collaborate on helping Ss we all have. #masterychat
A3: One word: TWITTER! Isolation is a choice! Take the initiative to connect with others - don’t wallow in your aloneness! We are #bettertogether#masterychat
A3 I have a strong team that I love being with, vent when I need to, don't allow myself to fall into a negative ranting fit, laugh often, leave as soon as I can when I feel like my life is starting to be swallowed by work. #MasteryChat
A3: Currently, Twitter is my go-to to reject the isolation. However, I also find that making sure my door is open - literally - helps a LOT. Having conversations with folks from all different perspectives (not just other educators)!!! #masterychat
This is what I was looking at. They have a conference every fall- I am going to apply to present on The Grid Method for personalized learning. Maybe I will see you there! #MasteryChat
I love my faculty and staff members but I LOVE my road trips and often travel when I’m able to see my friend’s bands! Summer tours, weekend road trips are amazing ways to break away!! The coolest part? My students love seeing my new photos in my room after a trip! #masterychat
A3: I don’t feel isolated. I have my students, parents, fellow teachers, admin, school staff and a wonderful wife. Again, it’s truly all about building strong, positive relationships!! #MasteryChat
A3 I make it a point to connect with other Ts and the Ss throughout the day, and with PLN there are so many ways to connect, no longer need to feel isolated. #masterychat
A3: not so good at this. I have select people I collaborate with. Other than that I rely on my PLN! Once I get the crazy look or a “yeah, but” I go into my turtle shell, and a box turtle shell, not one of the turtles that can’t close themselves off. Working on this! #MasteryChat
A3 Seek out collaboration. All great learning does not happen in silos and it can't happen just within 4 walls. Seek out other educators, professionals, community members and teach with them. Spread out across just one room and trust students to collaborate. #MasteryChat
A3 - TWITTER! It has been the best thing to avoid my loneliness. However, I also love conferences and traveling to get new ideas and meet other teachers. #masterychat
A3: Share, share, share! Don't keep your great lessons, ideas and resources to yourself. Share them with your colleagues. They will do the same for you! #MasteryChat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A3: absolutely love PLCs!!! Set expectations as a team early on to work interdepedently to monitor if students are mastering the content. I believe firmly that Collective Teacher Efficicay is a huge indicator of student success. Prioritize working collaboratively. #MasteryChat
A3: Get on Twitter. Connect. Connect with teachers in ur department. I love ts at my school. I love a good interdisciplinary unit. I’m open &flexible to work with Ts that love teaching, like me! Share ideas, approaches, things that work! #teachermyth#bettertogether#MasteryChat
A2: When I was in the classroom I let everyone know who I was and what I was all about. I let them know I was preparing them to pass ANY chem test not just mine. I believe becuz they “saw” me they wanted to pass any chem test because I believed they could. #MasteryChat#gwinchat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A3: I love connecting. Learning. I go visit. I am a turtle and carry office on my back so I will go park it in a classroom and work for the day. Refreshing and gets me refocused on what matters: students. #masterychat
Actively building our professional learning networks using everything you have mentioned and more. Seek out opportunities to engage with other positive, change making educators! #STEMAZing#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth#TwitterforPD
A3 - two of my colleagues from different departments make sure to have coffee/tea an hour before Ss get there. Helps to share similar experiences even if we don’t share the same students. #masterychat
A3: Use those PD days to your advantage! Step out of the comfort zone and lend your skills to others. Collaborate with other educators. Join #masterychat and build your own PLN.
A1: Ts operate under the assumption that Ss don’t learn unless we teach them, however because we know how to behave we expect everyone to know how to behave. We tell children to be good but we don’t teach them what being good looks like #Masterychat
A3. Isolation is a choice... comes from the same place as "I" and "me" in the realm of ego as per Eckhart Tolle... it takes a village to teach and raise children. There is no time or room for isolation but plenty of room for strength and questioning. Teach Hard!!! #masterychat
A3: Job embedded PD. Prof. Book circles. Cross curricular lesson planning. Lunch and learn. Lots of ways to connect and grow a ppl in your building. If you seek, you shall find. If this isn’t occurring, make it happen in a pocket & grow it. #MasteryChat
Yes...I try to joke with my students too. Right now they are trying to get me to "floss" and "dab." I look super silly but they get a kick out of it. #MasteryChat
That's great! It's always a work in progress, new students every year, new challenges. Glad you're fighting the good fight for our kids #kidsdeserveit#masterychat
A3: Let's reject isolation not just for ourselves, but for every adult in our schools!
What can you do to connect with teachers on your campus?
#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A3: really try to create a family like attitude among us. It takes time but building relationships is key. Really enjoy Twitter a lot and the extended colleagues and friends I've made here.
#Masterychat
Yes! Also curious: How often do some in these online PLNs reach beyond their professions? To outside perspectives on education? ... Or do you get enough of that? ;) #MasteryChat
A3- Thank God for Twitter!!! As a #alted teacher I often felt like I was on an island on to "ourselves"...this has helped me feel connected and supported. #MasteryChat
A3) I am close to some of my collegues and I try to share my ideas, lessons, and new resources around my building because I see the value in us growing as a team #masterychat
A3: twitter chats are great! But also remember that it’s okay to have a little time to yourself. Teachers work hard, and are around kids all day 5 days a week. take some time to yourself! Self care #masterychat
A3: I LOVE this question! With my Twitter family always nearby I never feel isolated. Every day I devote time to chat with & learn from Twitter friends. This has made a remarkable difference in my mindset & my life. Today I encouraged a new teacher to join our PLN! #masterychat
A3: I really feel like twitter has impacted my instructional practice and feelings about teaching. My PLN helps me reflect, grow, and inspires me! #masterychat
A3: I think as teachers, we cannot be isolated. I cannot walk into Wal-Mart without seeing one of my former or current students. One asked me if I remembered his name. He lit up when I answered him. #masterychat
A3: Honestly?? I don't! Sometimes it's okay to be by yourself, away from the craziness of the day, and reflect during that time on your class and your teaching. When I feel isolated, I embrace it! #masterychat
A3 My current position is tricky because I am the only one at the two buildings I am in that teaches my subject (3rd-5th grade gifted education). I find my tribe here on #masterychat & w/ my awesome team @thegridmethod. I get rejuvenated by @chadostrowski@RaeHughart@jeffgargas
A3: Wonderful question. Perhaps education is one of the most isolated of professions. Ironic since learning is such a social construct. Must create community of peers dedicated to excellence. Iron sharpens iron. #MasteryChat
A3: Working with other educators, ones who understand the challenges that we face and the joys that we experience. I find conversations with these inspirational peers, always rejuvenate me and help me feel connected. #masterychat
A3 Definitely keeping the conversation going with others in the field. Or, as we did recently, meeting up in one city for dinner with some of the most amazing and inspirational people l know. (Looking right at you @melanie_korach ) #MasteryChat
A2: To get my 3rd graders excited I try to show enthusiasm about what we are doing - I use words like this is "awesome" and "cool" - and explain why I think that. It gets their wheels turning....and it encourages discussion and questions. #masterychat
A3 I make it a point to connect with other Ts and the Ss throughout the day, and with PLN there are so many ways to connect, no longer need to feel isolated. #masterychat
A3: We can choose to empower our colleagues to empower their students. If we do this long enough and often enough, isolation won't be an issue. Here's a fun how-to book on this topic:
https://t.co/g8HuloYmY7#masterychat
A2: I try to make topics we read or discuss high interest and try to connect it to something that is going in in society now. If I don't know something there is always a student who asks to make a personal connect. I like seeing them take the lead.
#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
Yes, brilliant list Aaron.
I use @Meetup and @eventbrite to search for events and conferences around me.
I subscribe to education newsletters from @CEInnovations
All these have been super helpful.
#MasteryChat

A3 I think isolation is a choice. Think of this- if enough teachers in a school chose to isolate themselves the culture suffers & kids suffer. Connecting, Collaborating & Communicating w/colleagues is also a choice & schools that have these teachers thrive #masterychat
A3: Isolation (those darn silos!) can occur as a teacher- I think especially in HS ...we do #pineapplePD & it's great to get into one another's classrooms to see what's going on! #masterychat
hahaha...speaking of door open - I always have visitors (other Ts) - Today in fact, I think there were 5 who popped in. At the end of the day it's the place to grab a chair and just sit for awhile. Sometimes it's the only time we have for adult interaction. #masterychat
#masterychat
Hi @masterychat
I am Nicole from Texas. I teach language arts. I have taught for 12 years. 10 years in first grade, 1 year in 2nd and 1 year in third. Hope your day has been great.
A3: I don’t reject it. I welcome it. I found found that my coworkers can be a bit negative and complain a lot. I don’t need that in my life. #GlassHalfFull#Masterychat
I'll send you a link to project that I'm doing w/ my Ss right now. I also love playing @TEDTalks and having Ss discuss how they can relate to the talk and use it to make a change in their own lives. #masterychat
It was so amazing. I just spoke of my Twitter friends and how I never feel isolated because of the amazing support system we have developed as a group! #masterychat
A2: Ts who have fun personalities will have fun classrooms. Ys who like their jobs will have fun classrooms. Ts who relate to people will have students who respond in kind #Masterychat
Q2 What do you do to get kids EXCITED about learning in your classroom? How do your connections with students play into that hook? #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
Open doors can help a lot! I invite other teachers into my classroom as often as I can- come see what I do, give me feedback, help me grow! We all learn better together! #masterychat
A3: Its hard especially when you feel unappreciated and disengaged. So you go talk, just talk, to a coworker not in your content area. Get to know a little about them. Develop a relationship. Find, or become, “a person”. #MasteryChat#gwinchat
A4 - well....@thegridmethod would probably be first. But changing the environment to be more flexible and student centered would definitely be a part of it. #masterychat
A3: We HAVE to find ways to connect with other educators! The connections aren't going to find you. You have to start the process!

#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A4 More learning spaces that are not assigned spaces! Outdoor meeting areas, rooms for maker spaces, genius hour that are equipped of course. #MasteryChat
A4) More outside connection to their learning. More experience in the real world to connect the why of their learning and help them social skills along with academic skills #MasteryChat
I am an introvert (though many of my friends don't believe me), and I find it hard to make myself do that. BUT it is important! It might eat up my entire planning time, but the connections I build during those walks are critical to feeling connected! #masterychat
A4: gradebooks. I'd want students to basically have a mastered skilled set that regnerates to a higher skill and be able to have fluid interdisciplinary lessons. Of course all students would be engaged and there would be no issues :) #masterychat
A4: open layout with #pbl at the core a la @hightechhigh where Ss follow passions and develop talents on a daily basis! Ts as the ultímate facilitators! #MasteryChat
We need to take a neutral stance (which is hard when it comes to beh) and to see what is 'really' happening. Often little tweaks in routines, choices, conversations etc. can make huge differences. Talking to them is key! #masterychat
A3 you have to seek out others. This at times takes work but it’s part of the deal. Use social media or good old fashioned human conversation. Ask a veteran and even if you disagree keep asking. Nobody should teach alone #MasteryChat
A4; The schedule. Why not let kids dictate their day? Who says we can’t treat classes differently? What would happen if time wasn’t restrictive? #MasteryChat
A4 How. School. Looks. !!!!! I would make it more welcoming, inviting, and open. Give Ss (and Ts!!!) choices in their environments with flexible seating alternatives. #MasteryChat
A4: No..... More..... Grades..... I'd much rather have students compile portfolios and advocate to the teacher about when they believe they have met mastery. #masterychat
A3. Isolation is a choice... comes from the same place as "I" and "me" in the realm of ego as per Eckhart Tolle... it takes a village to teach and raise children. There is no time or room for isolation but plenty of room for strength and questioning. Teach Hard!!! #masterychat
A4: Start with the layout of the building, open rooms, bright lights, AC! More cross-curricular classes and integration into other areas (tech, art, music), classes by ability and not "grade", teachers as guides and not sages on the stage(s) #masterychat#teachermyth
A4: No..... More..... Grades..... I'd much rather have students compile portfolios and advocate to the teacher about when they believe they have met mastery. #masterychat
For me, the educators on Twitter are all here to find people who want to engage in conversation about growing and encouraging each other. That's not always the case at other PD. #MasteryChat
A4: Have students learn for mastery at their own pace; less academic pressure, no tests, no assessments, more project based genius hour learning and more time for mental wellness. #MasteryChat
I like to read books by scientists and psychologists and often teach out with additional questions or insights. I also have many pals IRL who are not educators, so that keeps me grounded. #masterychat
A4. We just lost the whole week in science to standardized tests. I never took close to this many standardized tests. They are burned out and don’t care (75 minutes to do a math test and everyone was done in 40 min). So if I could little to no standardized tests. #MasteryChat
Yes. I LOVE conferences! I think I would go every week if I could. Just got back from the awesome #bplc18 conference in Rhode Island and my summer is just jam-packed with more! #masterychat
For anyone in the D.C. area we're running a workshop on how to create in-house professional development-- another great way to fight against isolation and build community. #masterychat
A4: At HS level, blended learning options for every class in the schedule...Ts have ability to set time in class, and time at home...Ts available for office hours & 1on1, small group time....And plenty of PLC, common planning, #observeme time #masterychat
A4: #masterychat another fab Q!
Ss could move fluidly btwn Ts & grades to best fit their needs. I wouldn’t be told by the district that I have to use Wonders or any other program. I’d have enough funding for science projects, expo markers, & more w/o coming out of pocket
A4: From a HS perspective — mastery grading, flexible scheduling, more opportunities for through-provoking learning & relationship building, college like atmosphere. #masterychat
A4: I would remove all forms of compliance-based assessment #nohomework and would push for student-centered portfolios - learning does have time limits. #masterychat
A3: I don't even know isolation. My whole goal is to network with other educators so I can become more innovative and knowledgeable. I have learned so much by RUNNING away from isolation because in the end my students lose if I live on an island.
#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A4 I would re image the T & S relationship I would make to fully collaborative so Ts & Ss work, plan, and learn together #masterychat Sorry I'm late Brian from IL
A4 I would make it so everyone gets to experience what it is like for our ELs. Not knowing the language and held to the same requirements. #Masterychat
I've started changing things @PrikkleAcademy
I've created a DIY report card that helps students documents their learning themselves using tangible and intangible measures.
Dreams: I want to see my participants turn their knowledge and skill into global solutions. #MasteryChat
A4: Assessment. It’s so broad, but it would look much different to me, yet still be productive. This would cause less stress for my kiddos and my whole school! #masterychat
A4 - not enough characters on Twitter for that one. Much more personalized learning. Flexible scheduling for Ss especially those with kids. Normalized SPED culture. And built in resilience/trauma support #masterychat
#masterychat
A3
I am a huge people person and outgoing so this does not happen to me but I will keep to myself or ignore other professionals that are negative. I won't take the bait. I will lead by example.
A4: When I was in the classroom, I made it clear that I was more interested in their learning a concept than some number or letter on a piece of paper. I wanted them to want to be at school for the learning, not a grade. #missthclassroomsometimes#masterychat
A4 - More time to work with them individually and focus on their futures. Also I wish testing and grades were not as important as they are. #masterychat
A4 No standardized testing, larger classrooms to fit ratios, and truly being able to mold the education to the needs of the individual student. #TeacherDreams#MasteryChat
A4: I wish we had unlimited resources and more time for staff PD. I work with a forward thinking staff with great ideas, and unfortunately we are sometimes limited in resources. #takestime#MasteryChat
A4- School would focus on Social-Emotional Learning,Trauma-informed practices,Mindfulness and Restorative Practices...as a result we could learn so much!! #MasteryChat
A4: We would stop pretending that grades have huge correlation to future success and that going to college is the best path to success. Both are false narratives. #masterychat
If I were to reimagine school, there would be no state testing, use of technology would be ligh and teachers would teach more instead of facilitating. I welcome naysayers. #Masterychat
A4: Classrooms and grades. Much more flexibility on both items. Growth valued over any grades and student driven learning wherever possible.
#masterychat
A4: A school where passions are embraced, creativity is a focal point, and the concept of "content standards" are nearly gone. Students meet with advisors who deeply know and guide them to work with others to grow, inquire, and foster their loves. #MasteryChat
A4 Of course, more authentic learning based on interest and creativity. Less standards based tests and more proving growth through expression. #masterychat
A4: A dream school would not determine the amount of time a students need to master a concept. It would be determined by the student and their unique needs #MasteryChat
A4: When I was in the classroom, I made it clear that I was more interested in their learning a concept than some number or letter on a piece of paper. I wanted them to want to be at school for the learning, not a grade. #missthclassroomsometimes#masterychat
A4: Goodness! There would be at least one social worker per building, who could devote all of their energies to that building, alone! There would be a SRO in every building, enabling Ss to see them as "the good guy."More trauma-responsive/trauma-informed training and practices.
A4: I would love for each and every Ss to start their passion projects and develop them all year, sharing their knowledge w/the world then designing a project to give back to the community in a way that connects with their passions! Make learning relevant! #masterychat
A4: The opportunity to sit down with each S and map out a plan for success in my class. We’d have convos about them in general once a month and we’d revisit their plan for success in my class every 6 weeks!! #Masterychat#gwinchat
A4: I dream of a school where every voice is heard. I dream of a school where every educator is passionate about every child they serve. I DREAM of students who can crush their own fears and go after their dreams! #masterychat
A4 to be part of a school that, if optional for kids to attend, would be bursting at the seems w/students. School should be that place for kids #masterychat
A4: I’d start here, asking us to understand the pitfalls of tradition. We have to willing to acknowledge what doesn’t work. #masterychathttps://t.co/c3I0qOJ61d
#masterychat
Okay...just going to say...
Don't forget how amazing u each r every day!
When one feels confident
& hearts feel in stride...
The world gardens amazing
2 share everywhere,
Alongside...
Students achieving,
Those struggling, true,
& all those in between
They matter, 2!
A4: remove all the state testing. Allow students to have an ability to have more physical movement physical education. Bring back home economics. More real world experiences to prepare for life after high school.
#Masterychat
A4: Make learning the fixed point and time the variable. What takes one student five days to master a topic may take another student five months. The end result is the same -- both master the topic. #MasteryChat
Q4: If I could reimagine school I would open the doors to more of our amazing community partners such as @DRPS and @WhitbyFire who would collaborate with teachers to provide innovative lesson ideas, bringing in our varied skill sets to maximize learning for all. #masterychat
A4: I would love for each and every Ss to start their passion projects and develop them all year, sharing their knowledge w/the world then designing a project to give back to the community in a way that connects with their passions! Make learning relevant! #masterychat
A4: Give students more choices, from start times to classes, allowing students to shape their destines with our guidance and help. Our focus will be on skills and responsibility, while students will choose the academic/vocational pathway for themselves. #MasteryChat
A4: No..... More..... Grades..... I'd much rather have students compile portfolios and advocate to the teacher about when they believe they have met mastery. #masterychat
A4: I would also have a school wide emphasis on kindness EVERY year. Kindness is timeless and it’s a skill we need to cultivate in the world! #masterychat
A4: I’d start here, asking us to understand the pitfalls of tradition. We have to willing to acknowledge what doesn’t work. #masterychathttps://t.co/c3I0qOJ61d
A4: A dream school would not pre-determine the amount of time students need to mastery a skill. That would be determined by the students and their unique needs #MasteryChat
A4 get rid of homework, make all classrooms flexible learning spaces, place high value on professional learning, and place more emphasis on new literacies (4cs) #masterychat
A4 If I️ reimagined school I️ would love an atmosphere of acceptance where students grow at their own pace with and a culture where teachers supported and helped each other. Learning should be fun and a natural process. #MasteryChat
A4 I could teach, lead, & care for kids ON A ROCK--and so can my peers. BUT, if I were in charge of the world, I would want: State of the art facilities/tech/resources. Fully funded arts/music. STEM resources. Smaller classes. Adequate pd driven by a shared vision. #MasteryChat
A4: I would love it if my students didn't have to take so many tests. We have the ELPAC (ELD state test), CAASP (state test), and district benchmarks. #masterychat
A4: School would be much more hands on and learning would be done through major projects and outside the classroom. recently had my Ss put together argumentative presentations why a class of their choosing would be beneficial; they had really convincing arguments. #masterychat
A4. I would certainly envision a team-teaching world, acting locally while thinking of global connections for help, and of course 1:1 technology... and doors always open or classes in convo on Skype! Too many thoughts!!!! #masterychat
Standards based learning. Ss not in grade levels, can meet specific standards at own pace. Study interests and cover necc. skills like HOW TO DO YOUR TAXES and change oil and how to problem solve and get along. How to be an appropriate digital citizen. 😬😬😬#masterychat
A4: block scheduling- doubling blocking (I used to have that) w/ my Math kids so we can dive deep, cluster the time n2 meaningful activities. Time to apply what we learn. Play a game, stations, hands on approach, layered curriculum. I thrive when my students thrive! #masterychat
A5 Evaluations and Standards by definition put us into a box as proof that something is happening. Vulnerability turns into fear. We need to change this mindset. #masterychat
A4: Transform disposable assignments into authentic learning products that live beyond the classroom and the course. Ss create more and consume less. #MasteryChat
A4: That's so mind boggling- I would like to change how learning is viewed in the #schoolculture & school community! These 21st century learners need us to be willing to change! #masterychat
Oh my gosh - the questions on #masterychat tonight are FIRE! Of course it's because we have egos, but once we gain the confidence to risk mistakes, we open up a whole new world of engagement, both for ourselves and our students
A5: It took me a while but I'm firmly accepting of failing in the open and modeling growth from it. Being vulnerable is ingrained as a weakness, but really should be seen as an element of trust.
#masterychat
A4- Popping in late from our inaugural Social Studies Honor Society #RhoKappa induction. If I could reimagine schools, I'd work to break the figurative chains that teachers feel bind them to curricula and pacing. Let students' interest be our compass and timekeeper! #MasteryChat
A5 - We shouldn’t be! Sometimes looking vulnerable or admitting an error can help you connect with students! If you haven’t failed as a teacher recently you’re doing it wrong or your not trying hard enough #masterychat#TeachLAP
We never want to be seen as vulnerable because often that puts us in positions we feel that we could be less respected. I have found sharing thoughts, experiences and things of the like students see that being vulnerable is okay and we should encourage it! #MasteryChat
A5: Because we are worried that those with fixed mindsets will see us as weak, and write off anything exciting, innovative we do as a "This too shall pass" movement. #masterychat
A5: I'm sure it has something to do with the #mindset we were taught. But now we know differently! Let's model that for our students and break out of our comfort zone. We DONT know everything...that's why we must continue to learn! #masterychat
A5: I think you gain the respect of Ss when you appear vulnerable. I absolutely love it when a S comes to me and says, "Mr. Wood, did you know you could do this?" When I say, "I do now," they light up. I tell them they taught me something. #masterychat
A4: I think I would ensure equity for all schools in regards to resources, programs, and funding so students could receive EVERYTHING they deserve. I would even consider allowing them to participate in online courses as well as far-to-face.
#MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A5 - Vulnerability is hard position to be in - ridicule, problems, and frustration. However, I have to make sure that I put myself in that position as much as possible to be innovative and creative in my classroom, but also encourage my students as well. #masterychat
A4 Not just flexible seating, but flexible classrooms. Students who have learned how to learn in student-paced, personalized environments from day 1 moving on through school. Exploring amazing ideas in an open environment that meets each kid's needs where they are! #masterychat
A5: A lot of people have the misconception that vulnerability makes you look weak. It DOES NOT! It helps you grow as an individual and adapt to ideas that you wouldn’t have ever dreamed of. People are afraid of change. #masterychat
Thanks! 1 year I sat down with each S 1:1 and just asked them about life. They loved it and got upset when their “interview” was delayed or postponed!! 😂 #Masterychat#gwinchat
A5: Because we are taught to be afraid by those before us just as we too often model that fear of vulnerability to our students. We must break the cycle and we must do it together as a profession, not just individual professionals. #MasteryChat
Yes, and when we become willing to let our students see us fail, they become more confident to risk themselves - and THAT'S when learning can actually start #masterychat
A5: It took me a while but I'm firmly accepting of failing in the open and modeling growth from it. Being vulnerable is ingrained as a weakness, but really should be seen as an element of trust.
#masterychat
A5: We cannot thrive without some failure, but I sure spend a lot of time trying to prevent failure. Odd for something that will benefit us in the long run. #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A5: Because the distance between innovation and failure are a little too close. The chance to fail sometimes overrules the desire to create. For some anyway. #masterychat
A4: I wish our schools were equipped with professionals who can help the social/emotional concerns of our students....and I mean the students with severe issues. #masterychat
#masterychat
A4
If I could reimagine school all of my students would have their learning needs met without jumping through 90 hoops to get there. They would each have a huge pile of books self selected by interest just for him or her.
Some view it as weak. Others see it as work. Most like to take smaller steps toward change from what I have seen in my district. Me? I jump right in. If it works get, if not, reflect and figure out why. #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A5: I think we are living in the middle of a "culture of fear". We've been told failure is bad ... it's not socially acceptable to be vulnerable. Which is INSANE in a place where innovation is prized! #masterychat
A4 mastery learning without grades. Move to standards based and have a well written posted objective list. No time requirements no grades no GPA main goal is to find an innovative staff who can teach students to love learning for the sake of learning #masterychat
A5 Vulnerability shows potential weakness & flaws People in general are hesitant to put themselves out there to be seen as needing to change #Masterychat
A5 I ask my Ss that often. I feel it's because somewhere at sometime, vulnerability was called weakness and instantly became taboo. There are those that will jump in with both feet and be okay with making mistakes and those who just dip in a toe. #MasteryChat
A5: Vulnerability is seen as weakness, weakness means chaos. That’s the general conception. We can change that narrative by modeling vulnerability and changing the meaning of FAIL. First Attempt In Learning. #MasteryChat
A5: Because we are worried that those with fixed mindsets will see us as weak, and write off anything exciting, innovative we do as a "This too shall pass" movement. #masterychat
This would be very cool, especially when it can be integrated into the curriculum rather than as a one-off or as a separate topic. We find this works best when students can make their values the reason to otivate any learning effort. #masterychat
A4- School would focus on Social-Emotional Learning,Trauma-informed practices,Mindfulness and Restorative Practices...as a result we could learn so much!! #MasteryChat
A5: fear of failure. So many people play it safe because they are concerned about the potential pitfalls but sometimes it’s important to remember that the reward can be worth the risk. We have to learn from every scenario or challenge presented to us. #masterychat
A4) Oh man. We would start with having classes in National Parks! So much fun when you can learn in nature. Even writing and lit can grow when you are in nature! @NatlParkService#masterychat
I’m a rock and roll loving math teacher who has plenty of tattoos (none of which are inappropriate). I don’t fit into a box and I love the support from my principal and other admin! #ThinkOutsideTheBox#masterychat
A5 I think many are afraid of Judgement from their peers. But you should try new things, it might not be pretty at first but your learning something new, modelling risk taking to your students #MasteryChat
A5 So many learning environments still look at vulnerability as a weakness. Ther is a lot of talk on Twitter about #growthmindset and #failingforward, but it is not as easy to find a substantial change in that direction in most schools. #masterychat
A5: We’ve been led to believe that we are the rocks for kids who need strength and stability. Truth is people that are struggling and/or growing need to know you’re doing the same and you’ve come out ok on the other side. #masterychat
A5: Looking vulnerable opens one to criticism. It also means that you may not be in control (which we are not anyway), and that is not comfortable for some. I say, its like jumping in cold water, you get used to it #masterychat
I did get rid of most HW this year, rather we do more activ and stations in class, or Ss write a blog post on @Kidblog once a week, their choice #masterychat
A4: The culture of education celebrates and rewards what one "knows" instead of what one can potentially become. Easy for instructors to become fossilized in their content expertise. Stagnation ensues. When there is no vision, the people perish. #MasteryChat
A5 R U kidding - I don't have to leave my house to feel vulnerable- my own daughter told me "dad, no offense, but I stopped following u on twitter because you're boring." lol- got to have a sense of humor & laugh at yourself to succeed in education #masterychat
We aim for perfection in our field and wanting to be the best for our students. Modeling perseverance through moments of failure, reflection, and action lead us to the next level. #masterychat
A5 I think many are afraid of Judgement from their peers. But you should try new things, it might not be pretty at first but your learning something new, modelling risk taking to your students #MasteryChat
A4: Having a school culture that 100% embraced an #InnovatorsMindset and no one test fits all mandate. Plus a variety of resources for creating and innovating with inviting spaces for collaborating #masterychat
A5: Actually - let’s be serious. Vulnerability means we give other people power to hurt us. Who wants to do that? Who wants to willingly open themselves to a place of soreness and pain? #masterychat
A5: Vulnerability is the birthplace of change, and across its border are the stones that kills it, pride and competition. These stones silence the voice of vulnerability and the life it brings. #masterychat
A5: Nobody likes to look vulnerable. It's considered a weakness and people might question your ability.
I AM NOT saying I feel that way, but I can understand why it's hard to let go. #MasteryChat
A5: It takes courage to be vulnerable & to embrace the idea of failing forward. For true innovation to take place more of us need to step up & embrace risk-taking WITH our colleagues, & learn to love who we are no matter what failures we experience. Grow together! #masterychat
A5 So many learning environments still look at vulnerability as a weakness. Ther is a lot of talk on Twitter about #growthmindset and #failingforward, but it is not as easy to find a substantial change in that direction in most schools. #masterychat
Push back on the myth that we can have all the answers. Embrace the truth that vulnerability is prerequisite for all innovation, creativity, and change! #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
Agreed, I read Daring Greatly by @BreneBrown last year, awesome book, how we need to be vulnerable, a great message that I remind myself of often #masterychat
A5) I often feel uncomfortablefailong and don’t like it. However when those risks happen I know good things can happen, so it’s worth stepping out and failing in the long run #MasteryChat
A5: We all have a want/need to be accepted for who we are and what we believe. It’s scary to be judged/rejected. Such an important process to better ourselves though. #masterychat
#masterychat A5. When I'm being vulnerable, I'm letting go of any control. So I think there's Risk, Reflection, Success, Failure = Excellent Learning and Growth
#masterychat
A5
I think leadership starts from the top. I don't think leadership from my experiences welcomes vulnerability. They expect you to be good at what you do now even if you want to try something new with your trade which takes vulnerability. I love new. I love new w S
A5: Lots of ts want to stay in their safe spot. Worksheets. T directed lessons. NO. It has to change. Be vulnerable. If a lesson sucks, scrap it or change it. Try againGet out of your comfort zone&get uncomfortable! #masterychat I kinda ❤️ a failed lesson. I learn a lot.
A5) Because our (American) society doesn't value vulnerability. We malign "weakness" instead of the courage of those who tried hard enough to fail, who cared enough to feel. #MasteryChat
A5: Vulnerability means loss of control to some which is a gateway to possibly be taken advantage of. Again, everyone needs “a person” and every content meeting needs to Vegas!! #MasteryChat#gwinchat
Yes! Each student moving on a learning path at THEIR pace and in THEIR way. It can seem overwhelming to conceptualize, but it IS possible. I know- I do it in my classroom with @thegridmethod and know hundreds of other teachers who do too. #masterychat
Push back on the myth that we can have all the answers. Embrace the truth that vulnerability is prerequisite for all innovation, creativity, and change! #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A5: Being vulnerable is also about having clearly communicated goals. We can only be vulnerable as leaders if we’re clear with others about what we’re trying to accomplish & our weaknesses in getting there. #masterychat#TeacherMyth#leadership
A5 Because there has been a misconception that being vulnerable = being weak, not true, being vulnerable means open to risk taking, learning and growing, #masterychat
A5) I feel like between evaluations, parents, and ss Ts worry about making mistakes and trying new things for fear of not succeeding and being judged #masterychat
A5: We have been conditioned to think that failure is destructive. However it is the bedrock of innovation and the most powerful source of learning #MasteryChat
A5: Anything new is innovative. Worksheets were once innovative.
Innovation and creativity call for change against the norm. If it isn’t normal, it feels uncomfortable.
Be the change. #MasteryChat#TeacherMyth
A5 I think it is learned behavior. In the past when I asked for help with a topic, it became a negative on my eval. I felt uncomfortable after that to ask for help. I have to say the climate has changed for the better and reflecting is encouraged #MasteryChat
A5) Wow. My honest weakness. Multiple convos this week about embracing vulnerability. Seeing it’s the only way to truly look inside the Ss we work with and see them for who they can be at their best. It allows for empathy. #masterychat
A5 People mistakenly view vulnerable=weak.
In truth, those who are vulnerable and face defeat are battle tested and come out stronger and more resilient. #masterychat
A5: Vulnerable=negative connotation. When ppl are vulnerable they feel like a failure, like they have to ask for help. This should be changed! It’s ok to be vulnerable/ask for help! It’s a strength to be curious and want to know more! There is strength in questions! #masterychat
A6 - I share my story with my amazing @thegridmethod team across the country and through blogs (https://t.co/hoTNptGx5W). My favorite way to share my story though, is through the success of others and more importantly their students! #masterychat
A6: I always share my story with my kids. Emphasize that everyone makes mistakes, everyone has setbacks, but you can still succeed when you push past those! #masterychat
A6: I try to be very honest on the blog https://t.co/9dZKlztnS7 I also share with my friends and chat on Twitter. Just the end of the day chats with my wife are a delight #masterychat
I share my story with my students, when it's relevant, I share with my colleagues, I share with my PLN through #educhats like these and my writing for @edutopia and https://t.co/RDlS5hYFjk It's crucial for teachers to share their stories because they connect us #masterychat
Q5: Just discussed this w/ a S yesterday. He complained how T penalized him for challenging her denial of Oxford comma. Ts who can't discuss/consider alternative viewpoints come off as insecure. We are all fallible, Strengthens T credibility to cop to mistakes. #masterychat
A6 I learned a long time ago that growth means sticking your neck out I will do that by sharing my story anytime, any place, and to anyone All stories need a new chapter #masterychat
A6: I plan to share my story everywhere I can. It has been a constant struggle, but I embrace failures as they come and look to growth from them with the support of my #PLN.
#masterychat
A6 One lecture each semester is when it is a getting to know me talk. Usually early in the term, so they have an idea of where I come from, how I think, how I process things, and why I’m the lovable nut that I am in front of the room. It kills shame & stigma. #MasteryChat
A5: Failure is a natural step in the learning process. A 21st century educator isn't a "sage on the stage," s/he is a learner -- modelling failure and vulnerability so our students can see that our classroom is a safe place to fail, get back up, and keep at it! #masterychat
I share as needed. My kids often ask “why did you want to be a teacher?” We talk about it. I have students that come to me for advice and I encourage them to evaluate all the time those who are around them! Those friends won’t earn those scholarships or degrees!! #MasteryChat
I am 100% real and authentic with my students. 1. They can see lies and fake. 2. They only deserve real. 3. I want my students to trust their real selves. #masterychat
A5: I think vulnerability makes you more approachable. I have concentrated more on serving this year, and I have made some mistakes and goof-ups. My favorite quote is "In the pursuit of perfection, we find excellence." #masterychat
A6 - I try to share my story with my students on a daily basis. It makes my lessons more personal and engaging for both them and me. It allows me to connect the material to a real life story while allowing myself to be vulnerable. #masterychat
This past year I have been working hrd on my blog explaining/ sharing my ideas and my reflections on teaching. Check out https://t.co/MbiT48xjVa#masterychat
A5 - districts will often put pressure on Administrators who then put pressure on Ts. Vulnerability is often not an option. No one wants their warts to show. Ss progress through innovation is the best wart removal medicine. Innovation > warts #MasteryChat
A6: I was adopted as a kid and then adopted a child from an orphanage in China. Every year @sherry_grissom let’s me share this story to her kids and it really helps me connect with and grow with kids. #masterychat
A6 I find it so easy to share my story here on Twitter or when I am presenting at conferences or writing. I find it much more difficult to share my story w/ the people I work with every day.
It is time for some serious reflection as to why and steps to move forward. #masterychat
A5: I’m sharing bits of my story all the time. Sometimes it’s with a friend, colleague, or threads of it in Twitter responses. Sometimes the pages of my journal are my only audience. #masterychat
A6: I don’t mind sharing with anyone who wants to listen. Non-educators tend to not connect with our “teacher stories” but I share anyway.... #MasteryChat
A5: The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you are feeling deeply uncool--Almost Famous
Vulnerability can be a place for innovation/connection, but we have to first show up and be willing.
#masterychat
A5 The definition of vulnerability is wrongly associated with not knowing every trivial facet of your content area. Ts are afraid of seeming unprepared by Ps, admin, state, etc. To be vulnerable does not mean “to be wrong” - it means “to be human #masterychat#teachermyth
A6: I'm at the point where I share my story anytime anyone will listen! Some of my tribe would probably consider it oversharing. It's taken me longer than it should to get "failure" isn't really a thing. #masterychat
A6: with students who need to feel some TLC & reassurance about friends, school work, family, etc. This may be a short talk throughout the day, small lunch group, note, etc. #masterychat
We have more to offer when we are open about our experiences. Sharing my story and knowledge to anyone who is receptive to conversations about growth, taking risks, and learning from each day. #masterychat
A6: I tell personal stories in class to show my Ss that I’m actually human. As dig seeing this side of me.
Professionally, I share my story by presenting whenever I can and writing about my teaching experiences.
https://t.co/WN2oqn4GC4#masterychat
I teach MS, but still. My special ed students need to know there is a direction they can be moving toward. Finding their passion...wherever that may take them! #masterychat
You're right that Twitter tends to be a VERY positive, growth-oriented place - at least in the #educhat community. It's changed my practice and my understanding of the possibilities of this amazing occupation/calling/journey :) #masterychat
A6) In my classroom I share my stuggles and my past with my ss so they can connect and be open themselves. I try to start every year explaining the "jems" story with my students to remind them not to take learning for granted. #masterychat
A5. There's no room for error in a world where you are only as good as your last performance...Sooooo Drop in to a colleague's room, watch them, and PRAISE them as a teacher.... critique them but love their work. You will change their career with positive feedback. #masterychat
A6: My story is me - I am broken and scarred. But that’s what makes me - me. And teaching kids that their story is WORTH telling is of upmost importance. So I share my story as it’s applicable to the point. Kids need to see us as people too. #Masterychat
A1: Some teachers wrongly perceive behaviors as personal attacks. Instead go to the root of behavior which easily could be an academic struggle/avoidance. Expected behavior needs to be explicitly taught. #MasteryChat#ProfTabaldo
Yes for @BreneBrown ! Her teachings & realness are RAD and have me thinking about my relationships & boundaries. Who am I without my story? Why not share it? #Masterychat
In reply to
@deedeeverlinde, @BreneBrown, @BreneBrown
A6: I tell personal stories in class to show my Ss that I’m actually human. They dig seeing this side of me.
Professionally, I share my story by presenting whenever I can and writing about my teaching experiences.
https://t.co/WN2oqn4GC4#masterychat
A6: I share my story with students all the time. In real time- I fail right in front of them. I say -I have a new game. It may be awesome and it may not be. We will vote at the end of class. Scrap it/keep it. Or do they have a way to improve upon the activity/game. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A6 Sharing with student should be on-going in some aspects. But if you have a profound story to share, wait for the time that you have their ear!
A6: share my story whenever. Proud adopted Colombian, first to get a college degree, father of 3, coach, husband and now a Ph.D.
If I can do it you can do it.
#masterychat
A6: Perhaps we share our stories in every day we live, in every comment we make, in every relationship we develop, in every student we influence, in every opinion we change. #MasteryChat
A6: We have more to offer when we are open about our experiences. Sharing my story and knowledge to anyone who is receptive to conversations about growth, taking risks, and learning from each day. #masterychat
A6: I share my story with students all the time. In real time- I fail right in front of them. I say -I have a new game. It may be awesome and it may not be. We will vote at the end of class. Scrap it/keep it. Or do they have a way to improve upon the activity/game. #MasteryChat
A6 LOL I share my story daily. I am open with my mistakes and try to show not only how I'm growing, but also, how I'm hoping to grow and what has challenged me. #MasteryChat
A6: I am in a writing group where we focus on memoir. Regularly share my writing with Ss and get their constructive criticism. Then, challenge them to be honest in their Writers' Workshop entries. Honesty creates connections. #masterychat
A6: I share my story with my students. Relationships first. If you show them who you are, they know you value them and they will do the same. #masterychat
A6: My story is me - I am broken and scarred. But that’s what makes me - me. And teaching kids that their story is WORTH telling is of upmost importance. So I share my story as it’s applicable to the point. Kids need to see us as people too. #Masterychat
A6: Love sharing with everyone, Ss, other Ts both at school and at conferences and on Twitter! Sharing also helps others open up and share which reduces that isolated feeling. #masterychat
Q6: I am on a writing journey that has been 20 yrs in the making. My story is being told through the power of my pen that holds the truth that resides in my heart. My story unfolds in dialogue with Ss about embracing my growth mindset & sharing how energy fuels me. #masterychat
A6: I feel as though I'm an open book. I am constantly sharing what works and what doesn't. However, I think that one of my pitfalls is that I don't really try sugar-coating. #Masterychat
A6: I share so many of my stories with my students. They're willing to help me know what I'm doing wrong if they know I'm willing to listen to them and improve. When they say I've taught a good lesson, I know they mean it. #MasteryChat
A6: I like to share alittle story daily. Helps the students connect with you and they can identify you as a real person who, dare I say it, does not live at the school. #MasteryChat
A7 Going out of your way to make those connections. Homeroom. Games. Hallway transitions. Lunch. So many times when Ss want to talk to someone! #masterychat
A7 Every moment between structure. In the hallways, cafeteria, etc. Connecting with Ss when they aren’t under academic pressure, or stressed about following protocols, is a great time/way to make more meaningful connections which can translate into academic success. #masterychat
A7 This may be way too simple...a smile When we have some joy & are positive about our day with Ss, they will be more positive in their day w/Ts #masterychat
A6: this can happen daily in classrooms - when teachers open up to students it is disarming, culture building, positive modeling, and most of all human. #masterychat#TeacherMyth
#masterychat
A6
I am open to share my story always. I fell in love with kids working as a camp counselor and changed my major to education. Kids need us. Kids need stability. Kids need someone to believe.
A5 I think this plays back to the sage on the stage mentality and that ts are supposed to be masters of all. Not knowing something is ok, honestly it’s good for kids to see that we don’t know everything and even we have to ask for help or make mistakes. #MasteryChat
A7: the natural ones. Talking over a funny meme or sitting on the sidewalk on a sunny day trying to figure out a plan to come back to class after a tough moment. Ss sense real and connections only come through real. #masterychat
A7: Personalized conversations in the hallway, at the door… Any opportunity that you can have to get to know them better. THEN use that information to engage them in lessons. #masterychat
A7: Lunch time. Most teachers want the break, but I enjoy sharing stories, laughing, and tutoring over a meal. Makes for good times for all...usually. #MasteryChat
That's great! A teacher friend and I are just beginning to create a blog. Our goal to share our experiences with other teachers and be able to reflect on our own teaching. #MasteryChat
A7: Authentic interactions offer the best chance of connection with students. Truly listening. Genuine interest in their passions. Mutual trust.
#masterychat
A6 I live in a small town, so Ss know a lot about us--the good & bad. Yet I still share my story to Ss, share what is impt to me, where I have made mistakes, all that. So impt that I tell them what's going through my head when I ask them the same question. #masterychat
A7 - I stand next to my door and say hello to every student in my class as they enter. I talk, engage, encourage, and smile a lot. It helps me to feel like I am connected to my classroom and I hope it makes them feel like they are welcomed to learn here. #masterychat
A7 The simple noticing and acknowledgement. High Fives, Smiles, fist bumps, dancing in the hallways.... We need our kids to see us as approachable humans. #masterychat
A7: the natural ones. Talking over a funny meme or sitting on the sidewalk on a sunny day trying to figure out a plan to come back to class after a tough moment. Ss sense real and connections only come through real. #masterychat
A7: every day I visit every class (easy, as there are only 10 divisions) and before/after school andcrecess and lunch supervision is a great way to connect with students and families. #masterychat
A7 - Any interaction that isn't around learning. When first arriving at school, coming in from break/lunch, seeing in the playground, eating lunch and my fav - playing sport #masterychat
A7 Greetings in the morning, playing at recess, taking a few minutes at lunch, walking out for dismissal, standing in the hall for duty, walking to resource, packing up, standing in the lunch line, and then those impromptu conversations/moments throughout the day. #MasteryChat
You’re the author of your story. Share the parts that students need or want to hear. Ss know the us before them not the kid who sat in THAT seat 25 years ago. Conversations to your past self might be a powerful writing lesson. #MasteryChat
A6 - my Ss know my story b/c it helped shape me into who I am. It’s is also similar (albeit outdated) to my Ss experiences. When they see you as someone who has made it out, I hope it gives them hope they can do it too #MasteryChat
A7: Any chance I can get to say their names! Knowing Ss names and saying them out loud leads to love, respect, & belonging. We all are worthy of that! #MasteryChat
A7 Greeting each of them when they arrive at school is a powerful welcome and connection. Also gives you a heads up if someone is out of sorts. I talk to everyone personally, sharing short convos about their day, night before, weekend... #MasteryChat
A6. Our stories make us who we are... mine includes an incredible family whose tolerance and strength allows to teach... my third career in this life and looking for more from it everyday! #masterychat
A7: The little interactions are the most important ones. I'm an introvert, so I had to consciously do this, but greeting my students as they walk in with a bright smile and "Hi, Jordan!" changed so much about my connections to students #masterychat
Absolutely! Social media has given me the best PD & motivation to be a better teacher! You will find ideas and encouragement everywhere! Thanks @tamaraletter for introducing me to the world of twitter chats! #hcpspln#bettertogether#MasteryChat
A3: One word: TWITTER! Isolation is a choice! Take the initiative to connect with others - don’t wallow in your aloneness! We are #bettertogether#masterychat
The first time was nervewracking. But I seriously cannot get enough now. It is like a Twitter chat in person and longer. So many people at conferences are there because they want to change the world. It is electric! #masterychat
A7: risking sounding flippant - during any moment of class. Ts are surrounded by so many children daily looking for meaningful interactions - something that is real. That is our opportunity to share that with them. #Masterychat#TeacherMyth
A7: actions that show that you care about them: smiles, conversations, any and every little action that lets them know how special they are! #masterychat
A7: Class. I play basketball with them. I just walk through the hallway with some of them. Learn about them. One S is going through his parent's divorce right now. Coming from divorced parents, I can relate. We talk a lot. #masterychat
A7: I find standing in the hallway between periods. Saying hi, asking about yesterday's game, or what they watched on tv, or just how their day is going... #masterychat#connections
A7: Meeting in non academic areas and sharing a conversation -at lunch, recess, before/after school. Ss know that you truly care when you give them your time #masterychat
A7: Greeting Ss at the door with a fist bump and a smile is a great place to start. Chatting it up in the halls works well, too. Lunch is an easy place to talk. Pretty much ANYWHERE is a great place to strengthen your relationships with Ss! #masterychat

A7 Greeting them at the door often they com to class and asking how things are going. Also weekly dialogue journals are great to find out happenings. #Masterychat
A7: A hello and how are you at the door is a great way to start. I also ask a #questionofthedy inspired by @joykirr to connect with Ss and get a dialogue started before they even take their seats. #masterychat
A6 I will share with anyone who wants to listen. I often share with my Ss about my learning journey, as I coach other ts, and with my mentors. When we talk often about our struggles we help think through them and sharing makes us feel less isolated #MasteryChat
A7: Taking a "pause" in a day to find time to have candid conversations with students. Make it a point to show student you see them as more than grades. Show up at extracurriculars and remember what they said from the day before. Simply care. #masterychat
Students go to the gym in AM—I always make sure to be seen in the gym.I’m a loud teacher, so I often yell “good morning” in hallways and am giving high fives a lot! I always try to give at least 5 minutes on bell ringers so I can talk to them while they work! #MasteryChat
I try to call them by their name every time. Ask about their interests. I had a student in my office that had shutdown, but as soon as he started talking about his baseball team, his eyes lit up and he started sharing all about it. It just takes being a good listener #masterychat
A7: Of course I make connections in the classroom, but I focus on the hallways, cafeteria, busses, transitions. The students need to know I am there for them at all times and everywhere. #MasteryChat
THIS teacher is a brand new member of #gridnation and she is going to ROCK out personalized learning in her class. Can't wait to see what you do with it (and I promise, I am going to email you back soon- I've been swamped!) #masterychat
5 ways you can connect with students that don't cost a dime:
1) High fives
2) Fist bumps
3) Smile
4) Ask about the weekend
5) Ask about their interests
#TeacherMyth#MasteryChat
Infuse their day with one positive adult. You can’t control other ppl but you can choose to bring joy to others wth a smile and warm hello everyday. Be the steady in a kid’s life! #MasteryChat
I agree that it's not always easy to explain the transformative power of teh connections you can make on Twitter to others - how do you do it? #masterychat
I also like to share my story of being an educator and a mom to a kindergartener. Can be powerful to look at things from a different perspective. #MasteryChat
Follow up to Q6: my classes the other year loved to hear about my daughter. And somehow it came up that she liked Junie B Jones... I ended up reading ths bks the last 10 mins of class if they got their work done- they never got to read those!! 😭 #masterychat#buildrelationships
A7: Whenever they need it most, whether a listening ear or someone in their corner. Ss are merely tips of icebergs -- so many underlying narratives and experiences that we may never know. #MasteryChat
I try to call them by their name every time. Ask about their interests. I had a student in my office that had shutdown, but as soon as he started talking about his baseball team, his eyes lit up and he started sharing all about it. It just takes being a good listener #masterychat
A7) Those unscripted moments, transitions, recess, bathroom breaks. Those moments where you are both taking a mental break you learn so much about each other. Teaching you can make connections too but those small moments are big too #masterychat
A7: Today: I told a S a liked his hair, I played memory with Ss during rainy recess, I paired up with a S during ELA bc we were uneven.
Every Day: I say "Good Morning" to each S b4 they enter the room and give a high-five as they leave. #MasteryChat
This is my first #masterychat and hopefully not my last. Normally would be teaching my class now but am on holiday. Thank you to all the amazing educators on here!!! #feelingblessed#TeachersMatter
A7: Several people have said over food. I agree! Food makes the difference. There is something that makes everyone more humble and open when they're eating. Students open up, you have the time to really think about what they're saying and DISCUSS! #MasteryChat
I also like to share my story of being an educator and a mom to a kindergartener. Can be powerful to look at things from a different perspective. #MasteryChat
A7. I have time built in so I can wrap up & we can have time for one on one chats after a lecture. They also know my favourite Starbucks & that I can be found out front with a coffee & a cigarette (now now!). Amazing personal connections happen in those moments. #MasteryChat
A6 I always tell my ELs about my experiences learning English when I arrived in the US at the age of 9. I share the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is important for them to know they are not alone. #Masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat people! Keep the conversation going with us over on Facebook! https://t.co/v7HdaCJyLK. We'll be live just a little after 9 if you want to watch!
Yay! Junie B Jones was one of my daughter's favorites, too :) And she was one of the ones that was less annoying to read multiple times. Loved her attitude #masterychat
A7 Being present in the hall, greeting at the door, moving around in the classroom and takin time to talk with each S each day. being present at events, #masterychat
Lunch bunches are always unintentionally created, normally from 1 on 1 conversations in class. I try to follow up with positive referrals, phone calls. Lately my students are teaching me Spanish. #masterychat
A7: Every day notice them in one way or anther. Make it a point to connect - to ask about their day, their dog, their friends. They'll notice and feel a sense of belonging. See them. #masterychat
When I was a middle school teacher, I was in the halls between every class change and outside with students on most mornings. It gave me so many opportunities to connect with them outside the stress of academics!
My job is a bit different now, but I miss that! #masterychat
#masterychat A7: Greeting students @ the door with a "Good Morning/Afternoon!" Or a "Hello Hello!" (my students can probably do a spot-on impressions of each too!) Is a great everyday interaction to do to connect!
I totally agree! I think it's important to not only focus on how they can be successful in the current year, but the following year too. I'm always explaining & showing my 3rd graders that what they learn with me will benefit them next year. #MasteryChat
A7: I ❤️ being a friendly face right in the morn for my Ss. Stresses of the day haven’t worn me out and I think many of them need it too. When Ss are working (not to distract them, but just have a 1 minute convo abt life). Hallway and want to do lunch convos more #masterychat
Absolutely! For some of our students, we are going to be the only person throughout the day that will say their name. We NEED to be that person! #masterychat
A7 - my Ss and I sit and have coffee/tea a couple of times a week. Or a few Ss will come in early and we’ll make food. There’s nothing like breaking bread together to get to know them. Plus a lot of my Ss live in food deserts so a full stomach helps start the day rt #MasteryChat
A7: Greet students at your classroom door. Chat with them during yard duty. Ask what they are reading! Sit shoulder-to-shoulder with them in class and ask them to tell you what they are working on. Take them on field trips! #MasteryChat
A7: I tell my whole story. I’ve been scarred (literally from 12 surgeries. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve won battles and lost some too. I’ve been a teenager. I watched my dad suffer from dementia for 20 years. I laugh and love myself. By living and sharing, I connect. #masterychat
A7: Noticing them. Making their existence count while they are in your class. Make them feel that they are worthy and valued. Ask questions about them, build the rapport. Spend the time. They are worth it. Light their fire! 🔥 #teachermyth#masterychat
