A1 Meet at door, register as they enter on device (quicker) give notices out am due then enter topical discussion of the day based on themes for the week. In yr 10/11 subject based recaps. #ukedchat Friyay was chill zone.
#ukedchat A1 In the 15 mins my 5 arrive (SEMH Secondary), usually halfway through a heated debate that started at the pupil entrance about the latest marvel movie trailer, do the register, give out any important announcements, quick look at the national/local news and away. Phew!
A1 Morning registration involves a thinking task on the IWB, maths puzzles or outdoor activities for about 15 minutes. Thinking tasks can be about art, maths, English, science, music... anything that will encourage diverse thinking. #UKEdChat
Q1 As a Librarian I use it to run a book club one day, our Mock Trial in another, assist with a Research Esay for Y7s in another and generally to promote reading. I find variation makes it more useful. #UKEdChat
Q2 interruptions from others requiring assistance. Although it’s important to ensure I don’t ever stop providing basic assistance in the library it can result in lost time with a planned activity. #UKEdChat
A1: Being primary-based, my form group is my everyday, every-lesson class. So I'm going to count form time as the time spent first thing in the morning and between lessons. For us, it's structured activities or discussion. Structured but cooperative. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A2 drift in policy (doors open 8:45 - register 9) means that nothing too useful can take place first thing otherwise consistent late comers miss out
I was lucky enough to take a form all the way through from year 7 to 11. Form time was register, moan at late-comers read notices, etc. Sometimes it was productive, sometimes not so much. #ukedchat
A2 Our issue was lateness but with the introduction of thinking tasks this is no longer the case. The children enjoy the start to the day and the thinking tasks prepare them for learning. #UKEdChat
Q2 I started reading aloud choose your own adventure books to high schoolers and it might be my new favourite thing. It’s a fun registration activity. #UKEdChat
A2 Getting students to engage in more ‘sensitive’ topic areas and respect the views of other members without descending into chaos. Getting students to admit struggles when doing subject based work and other members in the team can and will help. #ukedchat
A1 - good activities were a weekly quiz from head of year. Was always fun. We sort of did what the flow of the class was. One half term we went through song lyrics once a week (I kicked off with Rudy, by the Specials) Was a real connect activity. Was kinda 'our' time #ukedchat
#ukedchat A2 Preparing my 5 SEMH tutees for a busy day of learning when they are anxious/sleep deprived/hyper/excited/hungry/unmedicated/bored/disengaged/all of the above...
A2: (First thing in the morning) Getting children focused on an activity to stimulate their brains, when they've just spent 20 mins buzzing round the playground. Repeat after lunch when they've had an hour of fun, falls and fallouts which have to be supported/resolved #ukedchat

A2 - getting them in, settled, organised, notified, tided up, motivated and away on time to get to next lesson. Then to add stuff to your to do list before your class starts... #ukedchat
A3 I've asked my class about their thoughts on the start of the day and which thinking activities they enjoyed or didn't. They've said they like the calm start to the day, they enjoy puzzles with a partner. Outdoor activities on a Friday morning is enjoyed by most chn. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A3 For my 5 SEMH tutees, it's an opportunity to get things out in the open, voice opinions about the school/staff/other students in a safe environment (I teach them science as well) and a chance to practice putting a cross an opinion/reflect on school/news/home etc.
A3 as a Y12 tutor I'm sure they think it's a waste of time and has no importance regardless of whatever I've done to help make them productive during it #ukedchat
A3: Mine find the 'traditional' sit down, one-at-a-time register boring, so like having something to solve, discuss, complete whilst I headcount. Means I can get them onto something meaty whilst I deal with the admin. They're loving Ted-Ed vids at the moment! #ukedchat

A3 - depends on the student and the teacher. Ever taken over a form and you can just see that sitting around in groups chatting during form is a embedded habit. And trying to break that makes you unpopular for a bit... #ukedchat
A3 Dare I say it, it depends on the tutor and the engagement. Really should be about a Pastoral engagement rather than a teacher going through the motions before they start teaching. #ukedchat
It's often good when the head of year takes a bit of a lead and sets expectations of what the teacher should be doing and possibly organises some stuff. You know, like a quiz day, discuss this article day, etc. #ukedchat
A1: Entry procedures. Student notes on Monday, teacher reading Tuesday to Thursday and Fridays are 'numeracy ninjas' an Words of the Week tests! Every single minute is utilised! #ukedchat
A4: In the morning, an activity that requires no input, like a follow-up activity from yesterday's learning. After lunch, a discussion about something topical. I sometimes stick Newsround on. Some of them have no concept of the wider world or what's happening in it. 🌏 #ukedchat
Get every one in and settled, registered and then launch into something interesting. Not always possible I know, maybe only sometimes possible. #ukedchat
A4 Thinking activities work best at our school. I say it wakes up the brain and prepares the chn to learn. They can share their thinking with others. It's such a positive start to the day. #UKEdChat

#ukedchat A4 With a welcome, a smile, nice to see you, mate! Even if it's a kid who hasn't been in for days or is returning from an exclusion or had a poor day yesterday. Clean slate policy.
A4: Set entry routines. Minutes lost add up, especially when you only have 15 minutes! We have silent line-up and entry to seats. Makes it so much calmer and purposeful! #ukedchat

A4 found that students liked to do a riddle before the notices and themed chats activities, got conversations flowing. Maths riddles/challenges (cough cough*) were standard practice. #ukedchat
A little piece I wrote for @NexusEdUK after over 1,000 people voted to say that ineffective and unhelpful marking policies were still the biggest issue with regards to their workload. #whyiloveteaching#primaryrocks#SLTChat#ukedchat
#ukedchat A5 Whilst there isn't enough time to complete homework in full in mentor time I have seen some great peer support for sections of homework where students are stuck. I find it helps my relationships with them too as they watch me grapple with Chemistry!
Totally agree. Students need to learn time management, responsibility etc. and I don't think that happens if they can put if off until the morning of when school has already started. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A6 This depends what is seen as productive. I'm sure my group benefit having the chance to share questions, worries and success stories with other students and a tutor with whom they feel comfortable
#ukedchat A5 It should be used for supporting HW - Ok, here's what you need to do, here's where you'll find the resources, try speaking to so and so....- rather than completing the task. Whole point of HW is doing it at home, happy to support/put students on the right track.
A7: Getting organised for the day and quietly reading their reading books. I really liked the newsround idea and would love to do that if I had more time. #UKEdChat
We do arithmetic or SPAG 10 a days related to a objectives we have already covered so they are always practising key skills throughout the year #ukedchat
Just Dance is my fave. Year 9 all out of their seats, waking them up and starting the day with some energy! Also @sporcle quizzes, inspirational videos, sometimes even a chat! #tutortime
A7: Reading aloud 💚. How could having fruitful discussions about word etymology, pronunciation etc. and knowing I'm having a tangible effect on literacy, fluency and helping them become word rich not be my favourite?! #ukedchat
#ukedchat A7 Putting a news story up that is relevant/current/ might impact on students e.g. In the last year my students have taken an interest in politics/Brexit/Syria/Trump and are learning how to express an opinion appropriately without swearing. Not bad for SEMH!
A1: always a task on the board when children come in- usually vocabulary, creative thinking or prep for work later in the day. Always very quiet and calm. Chance to speak to individuals re homework, issues etc #UKEDchat

A2: in the morning the children have 15mins to come in so children who come in during the last couple of minutes miss out on learning/ reflection/ prep activities #ukedchat
A8. I would have it in a different location, away from desks. Use it as an opportunity to energize and start the day positively rather than slumping in a chair. A group walk, dance, stretch or meditation would be such a lovely way to prepare for learning #ukedchat
