Can't wait to start! I know that classroom management always looks good on paper, but in practice, it's a whole different story! #onesizedoesnotfitall#sunchat
My number 1 piece of advice for those entering the profession? Spend a few months subbing first. You will learn more from this than ANY class on classroom management. Trust me.#sunchat
Morning, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in CO. I fear gray strands on my face & thinning ones on my head may qualify me for veteran status -- which feels mildly disappointing given how much I still have to learn!

I was told on my first day to not let the kids see you smile until Thanksgiving. That. Is. Crap. Your kids should see you smile when they walk in the door on D1! #sunchat
Almost as important as my first bit of advice - surround yourself with a solid, supportive #squad. Your first year will be tough enough. You don't need negativity. #sunchat
That good teaching takes time. Don't get frustrated, always reflect and revise. While this happens faster and more effectively after 18 years it is still key to good instruction. #sunchat#eda655
Great way to earn some cash while still in school, while gaining some great experience for your resume, is to sub at schools near your college. Usually 60 credits is all you need. #sunchat
My #1 piece of advice for new science teachers (K-12) is to follow real scientists. Their excitement & passion are contagious & inspiring. Listen to science podcasts like #sciencefriday and check out their educator resources for lessons based on current science. #sunchat
I follow an ELA page on Facebook - a common theme for posters is "I'm a first year teacher and I'm ready to quit." Sad, because it says that our schools aren't preparing teachers for what it is really like, in my opinion. #sunchat
Advice to new teachers-make time for YOU your first year. There will always be things you can do for your Ss or classroom, but find a hobby and go home at reasonable hours! Help avoid burnout #sunchat
Old-saw advice from Stephen Covey: "1st seek to understand, then to be understood." Listen; observe; ask questions; resist jumping to conclusions via assumptions, no matter how obvious they might feel. #sunchat
Find your tribe! They aren’t all that hard to find- those colleagues who you see passionately teaching, mixing the teaching with love and continuous growth! Beyond thankful for my peeps! #sunchat
Paula, Parent Ambassador from KY. If you’re here to ask questions and get advice, you’re off to a great start. Don’t forget to follow, they’ll lead you to other great sources. Can’t wait to meet some new teachers and hear their concerns.#sunchat
And if you can't do it through subbing, find another way. Volunteer. Work at local camps. I taught private lessons for a long time before getting in front of full classes. #sunchat
I spent a year subbing, got 2 long term maternity leaves. Best opportunity ever. Learned more about classroom management in that year then I did in college.
My advice to anyone entering the profession is to definitely set up rules, routines,&constantly model, model, model expectations for behavior. Also be patient and always be the adult. Build relationships so they know you care. #sunchat
I was surprised that many kids didn't know what Falcon Heavy was, or that there are Eagle cams watching baby eagles hatch. Teachers need to stray from the text and get kids interested in real world stuff once in a while. Make it real. #sunchat
There will be days when everything feels like magic and there will be days when you feel, like you've made the worst mistake ever. Learn from the ebb, learn from the flow. #sunchat

Ask questions. Find what works best for you and your students. Picture how you want your class to look and sound, then take the time to teach procedures to achieve the vision. #sunchat
Get to know your students & plan your lessons for them!!! Classroom management will be easier bc students know you care, & they will be interested/engaged. Be willing to put yourself out their to build trust & connect - that's what matters 1st, not getting into content. #sunchat
Also, find a good POSITIVE teacher to help mentor you if you're not assigned one. Stay away from those Ts who are negative and constantly complaining- they have become jaded and can be energy vampires! #sunchat
As a parent, I love learning along with a new teacher. Communicate with us and get our support. If you show us you care about our kids we’ll trust you in the valleys. #sunchat
I 2nd that. This is my 24th yr Ting and I have finally stopped bringing things home. Burn out rate seems to be higher and higher for younger Ts. Set a routine, go in early before the school fills up, get work done. Come out of your room be social. #sunchat
Understand that growth is such a key. Leave the croom when you retire with something left to learn! Seek out growth opps! Seek out a #PLN that will help you grow! #sunchat
Always ask, "Would I want my kid sitting in this classroom?" - make it fun and interesting and filled with respect and love and community and real world applications and questions and answers and books that are fun.....#sunchat

Yes - just because they assign you a mentor teacher, doesn't mean you will connect with their teaching style. Seek out those who inspire you and ask questions, seek feedback. #sunchat
One thing I struggled with is taking things personally. Parent emails, suggestions for improvement, a kid dropping my class...it's all a part of the ebb and flow. Don't beat yourself up over it. #sunchat
3rd... To be a great teacher, you have to step back to get perspective and you have to be a person that your Ss can relate to. Teach them to find balance! #sunchat
Selfishly asking...what advice would you give to a new principal/administrator (since I am moving that direction currently...probably not for several years, but still...) #sunchat
If you have a litearcy or content coach on your campus, make sure ro seek them out and utilize them to help, that's what we're here for! There's no shame in seeking out help and resources! It can be overwhelming even for veteran Ts! #sunchat
Yes! Share your excitement for learning, and be sure to take advantage of brand new news! There are mornings when I hear amazing science news on #NPR's #MorningEdition and I can't wait to share it with my science students. #sunchat
Remember, professional development doesn't just come from school-led pd or coaching. Go observe peers, find PD opps outside of school, build your #pln, participate in twitter chats, read books, etc. There are so many people & so many resources to learn from on your own! #sunchat
You can't please everyone. You will not connect wonderfully with every student. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try, but you have to have some balance or it will be a crazy emotional roller coaster! #sunchat
That's why we keep our hands & arms inside the vehicle, sometimes gripping the nearest fixed surface tightly. Whole month of February, for example, feels like it lacks safety restraints! #sunchat
Good to connect with peers but be aware that you don't get dragged down by negativity. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. #sunchat

Recently I saw a post that emphasized "creating experiences" rather than "finding activities." Find 1 or 2 like-minded teachers who can collaborate on developing exciting experiences that ignite passion & help your students build skills & want to dig deeper. #sunchat
If I could go back in time... Put people first. Sometimes a hard lesson to learn. Names, lives, activities, insterests, favorite music, favorite color, birthdays, home situation. We research the heck out of so many things. Why do we not take the time to know our Ss? #sunchat
Good one! That one really made me think! Don't procrastinate and make the most of you conference time so you have time afterschool and on the weekends for "you". #sunchat
Standardized tests stink, but they are here, for now. Don't let them get you down. This too shall pass, just like all the other ed trends that come and go. #sunchat
If I could tell myself one thing, it would be to not put so much pressure on myself. Teachers have great responsibility, but it's okay not to be perfect. Love the kids, be passionate about learning, and do the best you can. #sunchat
If I could go back in time I would tell myself to “....accept the things I cannot change, have the courage to change what I can, and to have the wisdom to know the difference “ #sunchat
Students LOVE to tell stories using robots and coding. All donations are doubled for now. Can you awaken a sleeping story that is lurking in their imaginations? https://t.co/oxqk43kOso#STEM#Makerspace#SunChat#DLDay
Coda I might add: And come again. (Besides going up & down thrillingly, most roller coasters end up back where they started.) We can nevertheless learn from these journeys, making them feel incrementally different in later iterations. #sunchat
Standardized tests stink, but they are here, for now. Don't let them get you down. This too shall pass, just like all the other ed trends that come and go. #sunchat
It all depends on the culture of the school. If the admin is set on enforcing/reminding Ts not to speak negatively/discuss Ss, then the lounge would be a good place to interact instead of being a hobbit in your classroom! If not, eat in your classroom & enjoy the peace! #sunchat
One last piece of advice: Be YOU as a teacher. Learn from the masters, but don't try to copy them exactly. Have confidence in your own unique way of teaching! #sunchat
If I could go back in time, I'd say use your time effectively. I spent a lot of time socializing during prep periods & planning at home. Use your off periods to plan, calendar your time, & grade in small bursts (like on the train!) so you can have more work/life balance! #sunchat
✨Give your students choice in everything you can. Empower them to let their creativity shine!✨
