Tonight's #KatyISDchat will feature quotes from @clayscroggins new book How to Lead When You're Not in Charge. Each quote will feature a question along with it. Please reflect on the quote and respond to the question in the typical Q1, A1, Q2, A2 format.
A1: @BarbaraGruener and @NowakRo are two people that inspire me not only with their tweets about our own kindness and care for others, but also about how we must advocate for all people to show care and kindness (especially toward our S’s) #KatyISDchat
A1: So many teachers, on a daily basis! @kecarr (with her constant motivation) @troy (with his passion for his staff) @DebHubble1 (bc she's an absolute brain) @WestmorelandKim (for her passion for curriculum) and SO many more! #katyisdchat
Don’t forget to read the quotes from the book before answering the Qs! They’re on the graphics and important to the thought process behind the Qs. #KatyISDchat
A1 hard question ! I am surrounded by rock stars and their echo lifts me up! Passion is contagious! I have a voice that is constantly pushing my thinking @SraIbarra17! #SJHCats#katyisdchat
A2. That is tough because i don’t feel there are many places where we don’t have authority with students. I try to model behavior and relationships and not simply be a book pusher. #katyisdchat
Hey, @katyisd! I see you all geeking out over there in your Twitter chat! Just wanted to say “Hello” from @KleinISD. 👋
Hey, @BClarksonTX. What do you think about a joint Klein/Katy chat? Might be fun. Let me know if you’re interested.
#P2Pchat & #KatyISDchat = Awesomeness!
Love this quote. Leadership comes down to your morals and using your best judgement. Understanding the goals and vision of your campus and helping promote it. Holding students and coworkers to a high standard; accountable, honest, active in school function #katyisdchat
A2: although I am one of many elem counselors in our district I work hard to speak up & advocate for our role and responsibilities any chance I get. When opportunities to share ideas/feedback are presented I respond as a way to help our voice as a group to be heard #KatyISDchat
A1b: #KatyISDchat per @BClarksonTX instructions, I reread quote for Q1. My Ss voices should be (& are) loudest, b/c their needs are the focus of our daily work.
A2: Having been in my principal residency for 90 days ... I was technically not in authority but continued to visit T classrooms and build those relationships. Working to support and inspire Ts. This was instilled into me by @SteeleThoughts#KatyISDchat
I'm going to just retweet this! I also have to say that leading in other areas of my life, such as church, swim, etc, have truly shaped me! #katyisdchat
A2 As an AP I lead where I am needed based on the needs of my T’s. Instruction, behavior, sped support, classroom management, biggest cheerleader or maybe just a shoulder to cry on! It’s not about authority! It’s about what’s best for my campus! #KatyISDchat
Q3: What are some ways you can work to make your area of responsibility great rather than waiting on someone else to make it great for you? #KatyISDchat
A3: Take initiative. Be alert. Be attentive to the needs in your area of responsibility. Run alongside someone who is better at your job than you are, learn from them, and implement their brilliance as you learn and grow. #KatyISDchat
A3: Make a plan, get feedback, adjust, do some stuff, get feedback, adjust plan, repeat. Focus on the end goal and keep adjusting until you get there. #katyisdchat
RTQ3: What are some ways you can work to make your area of responsibility great rather than waiting on someone else to make it great for you? #KatyISDchat
A3: Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and pushing past what has always been donw to do what is far greater than anything we could imagine. Don't just keep doing what has always been done because its "always" been done "that way." #KatyISDchat#SJHCats
A3. Currently we are experiencing some turmoil in the library world and it is easy to allow that to swallow all of my energy. I am trying to use it as motivation to reach the needs of my patrons and always give their voice value. #katyisdchat
A2: #KatyISDchat Not sure I step outside my "authority". Every S @ MRJH is mine - whether in my class (past, present, or future) or my hallway buddy. They are mine to support & teach.
A2: Taking time to build relationships with every person I work with, from the custodians to the principal, and encouraging others to do the same. #KatyISDchat
A3: Makes me think about the old adage that the best way to change the world is to start with your little corner. You don’t have to worry about your ‘authority’, just work on making things better! #KatyISDchat
A3 A wise person once told me that the way you earn your next job is by being amazing at your current one. I find that to be so true - when you are a rockstar at what you do, others know that you can grow and become a rockstar at your next position as well. So ... #katyisdchat
A3 I began writing two years ago...just to see what would happen and where it would take me. I could have waited for someone to offer me the opportunity; but, I chose to jump in. Thrilled I did. #katyisdchat
Give 110% every day. Look at things you do each day and find ways to improve them - small, incremental steps lead to giant leaps over time. Be courageous and bold in doing what's best for kids, and don't be afraid to question the way we've always done it! #katyisdchat
A3: always doing my best work and putting my best effort forward for any component of my job. Our S’s, T’s and staff deserve my best every day! Bringing your best and a positive attitude speak for themselves to the people around you #KatyISDchat
Also, I believe that our work is 50% hard work, and 50% communicating about that work. Communicating to our parents, our students, our colleagues, our community, and the world! #katyisdchat
A3: We all have an opportunity to create an oasis of excellence right where we are. Most of our frustrations are with the things we cannot control. Channeling my energy to what I can control is the best use of my energy. #KatyISDchat
RTQ3: What are some ways you can work to make your area of responsibility great rather than waiting on someone else to make it great for you? #KatyISDchat
A3: be present and take risk. Seek those out who may not do the same job (esp when youre the solo SLP) as you but may have more experience in general and can open your mind to different ideas. #KatyISDchat
A3: Most AP jobs are operational and include discipline, scheduling, and busses. And I will do these things proudly. However, as an AP I am going to inspire and empower my Ts by looking for what they are doing awesome and letting them know. #KatyISDchat
A3: My position is new to my campus this year so it keeps evolving. My goal is to improve on each of my tasks Everytime. Learning more every day through the experience. #KatyISDchat
Q3: What are some ways you can work to make your area of responsibility great rather than waiting on someone else to make it great for you? #KatyISDchat
A3: Take risks, and don't be afraid to fail or be rejected. I've learned sometimes you have to just jump in, anxiety and all. The growth is so worth it. #KatyISDchat
A3: #KatyISDchat I'm new to teaching Teen Leadership this year, still getting my bearings & finding what the kiddos really need out of this course. I want to build a program that the Ss are proud to lead.
A4: I HAVE to overcome my fears because I know that it's not about me. It's not optional. If I can't overcome my fears and lead well, I'm doing a disservice to those who follow me (or those who I follow) and expect me to lead with excellence. #KatyISDchat
A3: I am reminded of this essay from 1899, A Message to Garcia. The essence is do your job and do it well! That is true leadership. https://t.co/eo546ckdKX#katyisdchat
Q3: What are some ways you can work to make your area of responsibility great rather than waiting on someone else to make it great for you? #KatyISDchat
A3 I take personal responsibility for student behavior and positive relationships! Both are HUGE contributors to school culture! Smiles, hugs, high fives, fist bumps and really LISTENING are proactive approaches to both! #KatyISDchat
A4b: In order to overcome any fears I may have, I surround myself with people who are great at what I'm not and learn from them. I make sure they know to push me to be and do better. #KatyISDchat
A4: I don’t think you overcome fears, you manage fears while daring greatly. That can only come when you give yourself permission to be perfectly imperfect. Then life gets fun. #katyisdchat
A4: Do the things that make us uncomfortable. For ex. Most people don’t like to look at a video of themselves, but if I could shoot video that will help my parents with math strategies so they can help their kids ... I’m going to do it! #KatyISDchat
A4. By “doing some stuff”. Fear is ever present in education. Our job is hard and pretty damn important. I tell myself that if i am pushing myself and caring for others, it is going to be...something. And i would rather have something than the absence of things #katyisdchat
A4: I tell myself “don’t think, just start”. Just start the hard conversation, just start dialing the number for the potentially difficult phone call. Once you start you often find there wasn’t much to be afraid of to begin with. #KatyISDchat
The oasis of excellence!! Love that phrase. It stood out to me in one of the podcasts you and Andy Stanley did before the book came out. Love this! #KatyISDchat
@marthaca82 Thank you for taking me under your wing!!! I’ve grown so much this year. I hear your voice every time I include some type of technology in my lesson. Gracias!! #KatyISDchat
A4: Mindset is everything. Know that being uncomfortable can be temporary and continue to being open about your goals and opportunities with others. I find the more I share, the less fearful I am. #katyisdchat
A4: My eye caught on the word ‘distortion’ in the quote. I am my worst critic for sure. It’s good to have trusted people like @MrsBeekTweets and @stixbailey that help you realize it’s all in your head. #katyisdchat
A4 Passion over Fear is my mantra for 2018! I choose to be motivated by passion instead of overcome with fear. I believe that every educator has something great to contribute .... me included! #KatyISDchat
A4 I am borrowing from wise friends today. Any time we are not being courageous, it's due to fear. If we eliminate fear with transparency and a complete willingness to fail (and then try again), then we can become courageous, and that is when we act with boldness! #katyisdchat
A4: There is a gene from First Knight that I reference in the book. Richard Gere (Lancelot) essentially says, "You cannot care if u live or die." When my fear of the future eclipses my desire to create progress, I become paralyzed in fear. #KatyISDchat
A4b: Imagine having @SteeleThoughts for 70 days pushing you out of your comfort zone and challenging you to think as a leader. It wasn’t always easy but I grew tremendously. #KatyISDchat
I think the best way to do that is be honest with yourself, be critical too. Also, be a great listener and communicator. It’s not you vs the world, so allow others to continue to influence your mindset. Be comfortable with you. #KatyISDchat
A4: My eye caught on the word ‘distortion’ in the quote. I am my worst critic for sure. It’s good to have trusted people like @MrsBeekTweets and @stixbailey that help you realize it’s all in your head. #katyisdchat
Q5: How do you inspire confidence in those who follow you (whether it’s Ts or Ss) to the point where they move from compliance to commitment? #KatyISDchat
A5: Relationships, relationships, relationships. Period. If we can't build positive, authentic, healthy relational capacity, there's little to no chance of inspiring confidence in our followers at any level.
"Be excellent on purpose." @SaneeBell#KatyISDchat
A5 By offering support. As an Instructional Coach/Reading Specialist, what can I do to help teacher's shine? I want to help design, create, implement & assess lessons w/ teachers. Let's work together for the same of our kids #katyisdchat
A4: I was getting anxious about a big presentation a few weeks ago and a friend reminded me, “they’re just people, too.” If we have something to share, as leaders, we have the responsibility to share, even when it’s uncomfortable. #KatyISDChat
RTQ5: How do you inspire confidence in those who follow you (whether it’s Ts or Ss) to the point where they move from compliance to commitment? #KatyISDchat
A4: Overcome fears by taking small risks. Being an introvert random group activities used to be tough for me. Going to #edcamp helped me learn to speak out in groups while learning from others there. Now groups are not an issue. #KatyISDchat
A4: #KatyISDchat We overcome our fears by remember our WHY. Why am I doing this? That's the inspiration that goes beyond my identity & pushes me to "lead up" for others
A5: I love the currency part of leadership. Leadership capacity is the sum of your relationship deposits. If you try to “withdraw” more than you “deposit” your capacity is capped! #KatyISDchat
A5: I don’t know that I inspire confidence & commitment... an area to grow. I hope that those around me see passion, compassion, and courage even when it’s hard. #katyisdchat
A5: I think confidence comes with trust. I try to be trustworthy to others- follow through on promises, listen fully, and be confidential. #katyisdchat
Q5: How do you inspire confidence in those who follow you (whether it’s Ts or Ss) to the point where they move from compliance to commitment? #KatyISDchat
A5 by putting the interests of those who follow first. For students, i want them to have a voice and also see my lack of perfection. For staff, I try to be as helpful and empathetic as possible. I try to assist in solving problems and do so with humor and reassurance #katyisdchat
A5: recognize them often for the great things they are continuously doing. They already have it inside of them to do whatever is being asked of them, but the recognitions help them see that in themselves when they otherwise wouldn’t #KatyISDchat
A5 Listen first. Listen, listen, listen. 90% more than you speak. And then, respond. Start with the why. When you know the why, many times objections will fall to the wayside. Then, do what you say you will do. When you keep your word, others know you care. #katyisdchat
A5: Relationships is everything. If they know you are genuine and care, they will go through hoops. Also, its important that you share their glows often and grows as well. They need to know that they always should be growing and not afraid of failing in my class. #katyisdchat
A5. I don’t know that I want anyone to follow me, but rather journey beside me. If change is needed, let’s do it together. It goes back to relationships and trust. #katyisdchat
RTQ5: How do you inspire confidence in those who follow you (whether it’s Ts or Ss) to the point where they move from compliance to commitment? #KatyISDchat
A5: People don’t take risks if they don’t trust their leaders. Trust is built with patience and forgiveness. We all make mistakes. I try to give and hope to receive grace. #KatyISDchat
A5: Give those who follow you the opportunity to lead. Have the confidence in them that they can be successful leading. Know that each opportunity you give them helps them grow for the next one. No Brite Force needed. #KatyISDchat
RTQ5: How do you inspire confidence in those who follow you (whether it’s Ts or Ss) to the point where they move from compliance to commitment? #KatyISDchat
A5 As an educator and a leader the greatest impact I make is by guiding others to have the confidence to become leaders! Simply saying “I believe in you,” goes a long way with teachers and students! #KatyISDchat
A5: Relationships is everything. If they know you are genuine and care, they will go through hoops. Also, its important that you share their glows often and grows as well. They need to know that they always should be growing and not afraid of failing in my class. #katyisdchat
Q6: Share some tips you have for maintaining a positive attitude and high level of energy when things may not be going the way you think they should. #KatyISDchat
A5: It is all about having GENUINE relationships. You have to be real with people. That means celebrating their strengths and helping them develop their weaknesses, and not being afraid to offer constructive feedback when it's needed. #KatyISDchat
A6: Again...I stay focused on my "why". Do I get down at times? Yes, but when I refocus and allow myself to come back to my "why" my attitude and positive energy fix themselves. #KatyISDchat
A6 Smile! Lean on your people! Hug a kid! High five a colleague! Make a different! Spread joy like confetti! Be better today than yesterday! #KatyISDchat
A6: Learned a long time ago that no one likes complainers, be solution minded, be ready to offer something. Getting into classrooms and working with teachers always brings me back, that's what matters #katyisdchat
A5: People don’t take risks if they don’t trust their leaders. Trust is built with patience and forgiveness. We all make mistakes. I try to give and hope to receive grace. #KatyISDchat
RTQ6: Share some tips you have for maintaining a positive attitude and high level of energy when things may not be going the way you think they should. #KatyISDchat
Q4 I think about the youngsters I teach about the ones I have at home and the one I was. Model what I would like to see in each one of them, even if is super scary! Like writing! #sjhcats#katyisdchat
A6 I have a notebook. In it, I write down one good thing that happened that day.Sometimes I write more, but always @ least one. Sometimes the one good thing may be that I got to go to the bathroom. Or I remembered to eat lunch. & that's ok! Celebrate the positives! #katyisdchat
Q6: Share some tips you have for maintaining a positive attitude and high level of energy when things may not be going the way you think they should. #KatyISDchat
A6: My mom always says that happiness is a choice! If you stay “above the fray” and make the conscious decision to focus on the wins, however small, you will thrive! #KatyISDchat
A6. If i am struggling, I seek to bring others into that world with me. I seek assistance and hope that i can provide it back later in kind. I also try to refocus on my goals and the needs of my patrons. They come first, even if i am selfish and forget sometimes. #katyisdchat
A6:
• Focusing on the big picture and not getting dragged into the minutiae of the weeds.
• Believing the best of others.
• Being aware that I never have all the information about others decisions.
• Choosing trust over suspicion.
#KatyISDchat
Q6: Share some tips you have for maintaining a positive attitude and high level of energy when things may not be going the way you think they should. #KatyISDchat
A6: take a breath and pause for a minute, find something nice to do or say to someone else, look for what’s going right, reflect on what you accomplished or did that day. We’re so wired to see the bad but there’s SO much good #katyisdchat
Believing the best of others - we tend to judge ourselves on our intentions, but we judge others on their actions. Take time to find out the intention. The answer may surprise you! #katyisdchat
It’s about more than you. Your team/your students/the families of your community rely on your influence. It’s a heavy burden and an honor; it’s too important. Talk to Ss, Ts, say good morning, listen, observe bc “On your worst day, you are someone’s best hope” #KatyISDchat
A6: I commit energy to what I can control & work to understand the forces of opposition. I focus on the saying, “Everything happens exactly the way it’s supposed to happen” to stay Zen. #katyisdchat
A6: I find it much easier to maintain that high positive energy when I am with my students. I am not however as good at this in some adult situations. #katyisdchat
A5: Empower Them! Encouragement. Talk yo their strengths and remind them of their great potential. Check in and ask questions. Take a vested interest! #KatyISDchat#SJHcats
A6. My dad used to tell me all the time: this, too, shall pass. And it’s true. Getting worked up is a waste of energy that could be spent on important things like reading a book or participating in a #KatyISDchat. #smilingisthebest
A6: Keep the SMART goal mentality. Is this a goal that is specific, measurable etc? Or can we put it on the back burner? Be realistic and take a deep breath! Look at how it affects Ss
#katyisdchat
A6: Sometimes it’s one day, one task at a time! Or taking a walk to talk to a collegeue who can make you laugh or a classroom to visit students. #KatyISDchat#SJHcats
A6: Sketching out a plan/future goal. Smile, play an upbeat song, find a reason to laugh, check in on someone who shines, recognize someone for a positive you see. #KatyISDchat
Q6: Share some tips you have for maintaining a positive attitude and high level of energy when things may not be going the way you think they should. #KatyISDchat
Q6: Share some tips you have for maintaining a positive attitude and high level of energy when things may not be going the way you think they should. #KatyISDchat
Hey #KatyISDchat peeps...make sure to give a HUGE thanks to @clayscroggins, the author of How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge. Greatly appreciate him jumping in!
A7: My why? I tell students, "I want you to be a better person on day 180 that you are on day one." Whatever I can do to move them in that direction, I'll do it. Will I always see this outcome? No, but it's so worth working towards. #KatyISDchat
A5 in an activity about qualities, one of my students wrote one of my qualities was that I knew how to admit when I was wrong or made a mistake. Leaders don’t have all the right answers, leaders seek for the answers in their pack! #katyisdchat
A7: The Ss & their well being each and everyday. I don’t care about the grade. It’s all about relationships, making them feel safe, valued & respected. Being their cheerleader and voice of reason. Sharing a laugh and a lesson. Letting them know I care and love them. #KatyISDchat
Believing the best of others - we tend to judge ourselves on our intentions, but we judge others on their actions. Take time to find out the intention. The answer may surprise you! #katyisdchat
A7: very simply, I want the best for EVERY child on my campus. What can I do to help ensure that every student feels loved, cared for and capable of doing anything that they want to do? #katyisdchat
A7: My why is my people! I love to see all of our Ts and Ss succeed. I live for the moments when they feel they have accomplished something great! #KatyISDchat
A6: #KatyISDchat Laughter - stupid, silly things I can share with Ts & Ss. I tend to be a little stiff & goal driven. My attitude improves when I can just share laughter with my class or PLC
A7. My “why” is that i don’t want anyone to feel alone. My focus first is not academia. I care that none of my patrons feel alone or ignored. There is no worse or limiting feeling. Even my nonreaders should feel at home in the library. #katyisdchat
Unrelated to the chat I have a bunch of The Hate U Give books that have been donated for Katy ISD since it was removed from school libraries. LMK if you're interested! #KatyISDchat
A7: I have a passion for helping others, and I want the future generations of our country to flourish. But most importantly, I want to be a teacher students look back on and say, "She genuinely cared about me, and she made a difference in my life." #KatyISDchat
My family, my students, my players, my coworkers, my mentors...I’ve just learned so much on my journey. It’s interesting to see throughout all of the change that you were you all along. I carry on my shoulders everyday. I’ve been through a lot to be at that point. #KatyISDchat
A6: I think about the great work that's being done and how even these small disappointments are just minor detours from movement in the right direction. #KatyISDchat
Thanks for what each and every one of you do! Teachers are the heart and soul of our society. Thank you for pouring out so selflessly on behalf of the next generations! You are true heroes!!! #KatyISDchat
Hey #KatyISDchat peeps...make sure to give a HUGE thanks to @clayscroggins, the author of How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge. Greatly appreciate him jumping in!
A7: my “Why” is I want to make my environment, the people, places and things (in that order), a little better tomorrow than they were today. #katyisdchat
A7: Because every child regardless of SES, language of origin, home life, etc. deserves a shot at greatness. Literacy delivered with compassion is the first step. #katyisdchat
A7 I want to encourage and support so that every child in my building, and every educator, grows - they leave changed. Not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. #katyisdchat
A8: One way that I lead myself well is to keep my priorities in order. My faith and my family are always first for me. After that it's my professional life and finding ways to be better in that arena. Oh, and maybe the occasional @AuburnFootball game. :-) #KatyISDchat
A7: My why is to get back to why I chose to teach so many years ago, to teach children that they are loved, that can achieve whatever they put their minds to, and that their mistakes don't define them. #katyisdchat
Thanks for what each and every one of you do! Teachers are the heart and soul of our society. Thank you for pouring out so selflessly on behalf of the next generations! You are true heroes!!! #KatyISDchat

A7: My why is to get back to why I chose to teach so many years ago, to teach children that they are loved, that can achieve whatever they put their minds to, and that their mistakes don't define them. #katyisdchat
A8 Why is my mind going to my goals and resolutions for the year? One of the best ways to lead yourself well is to make sure that you put your own oxygen mask on first. You can't serve others if you don't first take care of your health, your home, and your wellbeing. #katyisdchat
Create goals and continually assess them. Challenge myself to try new ideas. Keep a schedule that allows me to complete and prioritize important tasks. #KatyISDchat
A8: Continuing PD, always seeking balance but also digging in deep to the good work that there is to be done. Be self reflective and willing to accept feedback. #KatyISDchat#SJHcats
A8. I embrace and share my passions without guilt. I try to model the love I have for many things. I want others to feel that is okay to love things deeply and to show that love often. In JH, students vary. Some share freely and others are scared. We can do better. #katyisdchat
A8: I’ve employed fantastic strategies from Deep Work by Cal Newport to keep focused and in the zone at work so I can be fully with my family at home. #balance#katyisdchat
A8: I constantly reflect on and change the language I use both internally and with others. That helps frame how I process various experiences. #katyisdchat
A8:I know what keeps me going- positive interactions, reading new books, exercise, finding new ideas from twitter & professional ring, so I do those things to keep my energy up and bring that energy w/ me into every interaction to help give some of that spark to others #KatyISDchat
A8: I place myself around people more progressive and knowledgeable than me. About many areas but especially education and social justice. #katyisdchat
A8: Taking care of myself and priorities so I can be best professionally. Stay open minded, ask for feedback and always willing to try new things even when I initially think the negative nancy vibe. #katyisdchat
