Today, when a student turned to look me in the eyes to simply say thank you for helping her at the copier. That mature acknowledgment meant a lot to me.

Hi Brandi! Pumped to have you moderating tonight! My week has gotten better as I've gotten over this illness. Hope yours has been awesome! #MasteryChat
Intro: Stasia / TX / HS science
Had a really good heart to heart with a student regarding mental health and we were both able to give each other insight. There was no judgment, just love!

I'm an Ed Tech Specialist and English and CompSci teacher.
I'm still on a high from a meeting with a super talented student of mine who launched his own start up a few weeks ago!!
#masterychat
Roman from Ontario, Canada.
HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation.
A memory from this week: kids who told me they didn't like English but loved coming to class because learning is fun and they are happy. #masterychat
Hey everyone. I'm Tonya from Richmond,VA. I teach Spanish prek-5 and work in student leadership. My favorite moment might have been getting a big hug at the end of class from a student I had had to come down on pretty hard for behavior. Kids do need boundaries.
#masterychat
After a very loooong day (just got home) I am so happy to be back for #masterychat -I am Tayler, an Academic Dean at a HS in Orlando, FL. This week a (former) student told me they I was the reason they pursued a 5yr Masters in Education. I cried.
Jordan from North central PA. Teach 9th grade US History. Memorable moment was having a student overcome their fear of speaking with flipgrid. #Masterychat
Steve Loveless, Learning Design Coach Land O Lakes, Fl. My memorable of the week was today. I got to coach a unified flag football team for special olympics. #masterychat
Memorable moment this week. S asked me if I would be willing to post my promise to not make them memorize formulas. He smiled for the first time all year when I hung up my signed promise. #masterychat
Leslie Hopp, first year high school special education teacher in Illinois. A special moment I've had this week is being able to send a positive email home, and the student's mom said when she read it, she cried! First time her son (a junior) has done well in math. #masterychat
This chat looks epic tonight!!! I’ve got a blog to write and final prep for Florence so I’m sending hugs & will def check out the chat later! #MasteryChat
Linda Edwards A memorable moment was we were working on our #HopeCampaign brainstorming ideas. My students had such fantastic conversations and ideas for their hopes #masterychat
Hi y’all. Elyse from Texas and I’m a social Emotional teacher and behavior supporter. Memorable moment: students are responding to interventions to be more successful. #Masterychat
A1 I am working with students at knowing & owning their story. I want them to be proud of who they are & learn from their journey. I try to include their story/passions/interests in what & how we learn. It takes time to build confidence in their voice; ultimate goal. #MasteryChat
A1: I empower my Ss to use their voice by providing opportunities for them to collaborate w/ others in class using @KaganOnline structures. They also do presentations & share their voice beyond our 4 walls during our #globalcollaboration connections. #MasteryChat
A1 By showing them I CARE about their voice. One of my most important goals for the start of school is making sure every S hears me say, "Thank you so much for sharing your thought/question/idea," at few dozen times. We have to TELL THEM that we want their voice! #masterychat
A1 -First and formoest you empower Ss to use their voice by giving them the platform to do so! Many Ss have never had the opportunity (especially high needs) to have their voice heard. If we provide them with the environment and resources they’ll use their voices! #masterychat
Providing individual feedback via a conversation in the private comments #googleclassroom based on @alicekeeler suggestion, allows me to interact & uplift each S!#masterychat
Hello, I'm Angie and I teach 4th! A little late, but here, waiting to see what part of #Florence we get...hopefully just the wind and waves we're getting now. #masterychat
A1: Make the environment one where student voices won't fall to the floor. Their words will linger and saturate thinking and inspire others to add their words in. Modeling patience and acceptance.
#masterychat
My moment: roll call question on Tuesday was to share a moment that has changed their lives. One of my third-year Ss said it was the moment he first walked in my room. #Masterychat#mywhy
Monica from Chattanooga: Pre-K. Several great memories, but today was great. My students are collecting compliments from the admins to earn fun activities when they get 10. Today they got to enjoy a new sand station and were so excited. They said today was awesome! #MasteryChat
A1 - We have an interactive opinion board where students can come up and voice an opinion/question. I make sure they’re all spoken about/answered. #masterychat
Hey everyone, Chris here! Former nuclear operator, turned instructor turned engineer.
Fresh off my first class collaboration and looking forward to doing more! #MasteryChat
A1) I encourage Ss to incorporate their passions and talents into their projects. It's why I started Genius Hour and Entrepreneurship classes at our school last year.
#MasteryChat
I’m happy to be back for my third #masterychat tonight. I’m Allison and I teach 9th grade ELA in Orlando! A memorable moment with a student this week was at open house last night when a parent took a photo of me with their child so they could send it to family in Puerto Rico ☺️
A1: I try to develop open and honest relationships with my students so they feel like they can share anything or speak up without fear.
I try to model just being yourself, flaws and all!
I would love more suggestions on how to empower them more! #MasteryChat
A1 I ❤️this question. I empower my Ss with a voice by creating a safe environment. Number Talks is a great way to start. Model model model. I have my Ss present PD to our staff and to the District. #masterychat
A1 Give choice, multiple learning options, lots of peer/group work, encourage them to branch out. Struggling they may be, confidence comes when they see I give them time to grow even on same work 5/6 times. #masterychat
A1)By showing them that you care about their voice both with your words and your actions. Also, making sure that they know their voice counts. #masterychat
A1: I encourage my students to share answers both verbally and in written form. I am also constantly encouraging my students to vocalize their self-assessment of content mastery. #masterychat
Student Voice must be at the forefront of your classroom to fully grasp a student driven classroom! Design Curriculum, Design Learning Opportunities, Design Questions, Design Leaders! #Masterychat
A1 - Our mottos for class are: go great work for you and make them lass your class. Generally it’s about practicing the Art of empowerment. Can’t just talk about it, you have to model and allow it to happen #masterychat
Hello #masterychat I’m Marcia Carrillo from AtwaterCA; #muhsd Induction Coordinator #tosa 30th year in the district 13th as a mentor! Passionate about inspiring Ss &Ts to be successful!
A1: I plan to diversify relevant texts in the classroom space through student choice, allow for Socratic discussion, and sponsor student clubs and outreach. #masterychat
A1 One way my students use their voice is by writing for the @yesmagazine writing contest, which always has a prompt students can connect to their experiences and values. Check out this fall’s contest: https://t.co/TQtleIglMI#MasteryChat
Give Ss voice by asking them about the SCHOOL environment..what could be better, what is working well. Make it worth their time. Frankly, their life story isn't going to help them solve an algebra problem. But it CAN make the learning/living environment better! #masterychat
A1: I give students a voice by asking them how they want our classroom to run. I also have them fill out surveys about how I’m teaching, if our methods are working or not, etc. #masterychat
A1 One thing I try to do is listen to my Ss. I think the more they realize that their voice matters, the more they will be willing to use it. I also try to give them opportunities to use them. One big that I noticed is the quick use of Give me 5. Thanks @PaulSolarz#masterychat
A1: From greeting Ss at the door when they walk in, to a good morning, to allowing equal opportunity of a voice in the classroom. Build confidence in themselves early in the year where the class becomes a family environment #masterychat
I try to have individual conversations eatery day, in the classroom or in the hall or in the cafeteria or at the busses. It’s all about connections. #MasteryChat
A1: My role in the classroom is a tad different, but I model that it’s best for Ss to do more talking and questioning- and when I am training, Tt are in the driver seat! #MasteryChat
A1a: My students and I are in middle of an epically amazing design thinking experience that I'm calling "Re-design English Class." So far they've interviewed each other to understand each others' needs, today we wrote point of view statements and started our... #masterychat
A1: I started using flipgrid and certain discussion models in my classroom a lot last year, which give students opportunities to voice their opinions and show their thinking. #MasteryChat
A1 I am working with students at knowing & owning their story. I want them to be proud of who they are & learn from their journey. I try to include their story/passions/interests in what & how we learn. It takes time to build confidence in their voice; ultimate goal. #MasteryChat
A1 So far we have not "ventured" outside the class, but I am recording them as they tell stories or spontaneously act out what they see in books. They love that their stories/voice are not lost. #masterychat
A1: A1: We have a process where Ss set goals for a successful year. Once ind goals are set, we ask..."What kind of environment do we need to create for all Ss to reach their goals?" Then Ss create a schoolwide social contract. It's their voice leading the way. #masterychat
A1 - I helped start our Makerspace this year and I think that it has helped to establish student voice as a central concept in our school. It has been great to work with students one-on-one and see their excitement about their projects and ideas in such a short time #MasteryChat
A1: We empower our students to use their voice by encouraging them to share their opinions and feelings with the freedom of not being judged..let them express themselves in other ways than just words... art, music, dance. Support & believe in them. #masterychat
A1b: exploration of the Common Core standards. Students are already raving at the way this values their say in what they learn. This process, and my awesome Ss are blowing all my expectations out of the water! #masterychat
A1: I missed the intros, but I’m here! I am passionate about amplifying student voice. By directly teaching listening skills, and rephrasing, my students learn to honor the voice of their peers. #MasteryChat
A1: The list is long, but here are a couple I encourage and try to model:
- Build relationships
- Cultivate a safe environment that celebrates sharing of ideas
- Offer back channels for shyer, introverted students
- Celebrate taking risks and making mistakes
#masterychat
A1: tough one that I’m working on. I had them do private introductions for me and for the first time I made a video response to all 100 to acknowledge I heard them and I’m here to support them this year. Need to work on giving a voice outside of classroom #Masterychat
A1b - We also dobtgr vast majority of assignments with options attached and grading which if done by students. This also builds trust, respect and self-reflection skills. #masterychat
A1: I listen...A LOT. I model, teach, require effective communication. I give time to discuss, time to disagree, time to reflect. And I encourage lots of questioning outside my classroom. #masterychat
I like to get to know my students outside of the classroom. I talk to them at recess and after school. I also love to talk about the different cultures that make up our school. Especially try to make my native Spanish-speaking students proud of their identity.
#MasteryChat
#masterychat A1 Building relationships is key. Getting to know them s people, having a “what’s good” segment of class, like @TaraMartinEDU says Being REAL, having an open door
Student Voice must be at the forefront of your classroom to fully grasp a student driven classroom! Design Curriculum, Design Learning Opportunities, Design Questions, Design Leaders! #Masterychat
It does take time! This is always such an interesting time int he school year for me. Students are just now starting to get the hang of how our classroom works and I am finally starting to see their individual voices come out! #masterychat
A1: I have created a DNA board with my students’ dreams, needs, and abilities displayed because I want them to know that their story is important. We will also be connecting with other classrooms through @SkypeClassroom , @EmpaticoOrg , and #GridPals ! #masterychat
A1 Encouraging students to explore their passions that they’re interested in as well as giving individual projects to deepen understandings. #Masterychat
A1.5 - One way we are trying to hear student voices outside the classroom at my school is encouraging teachers to walk the cafeteria with a "Invite me to your table?" sign. If Ss invite you, have a conversation.
#masterychat
Exactly. You have the create the environment and provide the tools for them. One of the first steps in doing this is building relationships with & among Ss #MasteryChat
I do alot of stuff "on the fly", but one of the most effective ones is "thumbs up/thumbs down" during and after the lesson. Even high schoolers feel less self-conscious being truthful with this. I also take a minute or 2 at the end of class to let them just tell me! #masterychat
A1: Our team's Essential Question for the year is "How do we use what we know about students to design quality learning experiences for them?" Their voice will resound all year learn in what they experience. #masterychat
#masterychat A1 Building relationships is key. Getting to know them s people, having a “what’s good” segment of class, like @TaraMartinEDU says Being REAL, having an open door
A2 My two go-to tech tools this year are @Flipgrid & @Instagram. I want my kids to feel comfortable sharing their voice (audio/video). As English is their second language, I want them to build confidence in expressing themselves in another language. To not be afraid. #MasteryChat
A2: I'm a huge fan of using @Flipgrid to amplify S voice! My Ss also love using @Seesaw to share their learning with others. In class, we utilize our @goPEEQ when sharing out! I am thankful for these tech tools & their impact on S voice! #MasteryChat
A2 You know I LOVE tech when it is used well. So many choices!
Some of my favorites are:
*show them how to screencast to record & share videos
*use @flipgrid to reflect/explain and see each other's thoughts
*collaborate digitally through GSuite
#masterychat
A1 Encouraging students to explore their passions that they’re interested in as well as giving individual projects to deepen understandings. #Masterychat
A2: We're still just beginning - so far collaborative Docs/Slides/Sheets and a little bit of @Flipgrid. Hoping to nudge them towards content creation - but I first need to nudge myself there...#masterychat
A2: In class? Not all voices contribute all the time.
Online? All in! Offer a variety of tech / non-tech platforms through which students can "speak" - speaking, writing, drawing, sculpting, recording, creating, posting, publishing...
#masterychat
A2 - I’ve loved sharing @flipgrid with teachers! I’ve also seen a lot of teachers use social media or Twitter to provide a platform for students to use! #masterychat
A2 I think any social media platform that you can flip and use “for good and not evil” with your students, can be extremely powerful. @flipgrid is another tool we see a lot of Ts utilize that is just awesome. #MasteryChat
A2: Chromebooks and ipads...and on those the ability to draw, record voice, record video, write...and so much more! 3D printers for designing and printing functional prototypes and art #masterychat
Survey Monkey. Not so much so they can vote or register an opinion on a Q I've asked.....but letting them construct surveys and ask Qs relevant to their interests! #masterychat
A2: currently, I use @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, & @ChatterPixIt to amplify voice. I love my new Q-Ball, throwable microphone, as well! I know #Skype will be making its way to my room soon! #MasteryChat
A2 Thanks to @WickedDecent I used color palette making tools like Adobe Color to let students choose a palette for their projects on Google Suite. It was awesome to see how students blossomed and created when they knew that their chosen colors were no one else's #MasteryChat
A2: Pear Deck, Google forms and docs, simple pencil and paper, email...the list goes on and on! Anything can be a useful tool when used effectively! #masterychat
A1: Our team's Essential Question for the year is "How do we use what we know about students to design quality learning experiences for them?" Their voice will resound all year long in what they experience. #masterychat
A2: On their laptops, I sometimes make Google forms anonymous so the feedback they gave me is unfiltered. We share opinions through Nearpod and polleverywhere. Technology is a good way to get unbiased opinions and thoughts #masterychat
I use that one all the time! I like to mix it up between quick formative self assessments and more individual, private, and in depth self assessments. I LOVE having students evaluate their work with a rubric. #masterychat
A2: As a digital 1:1 school our students are empowered by their laptops every day. Our teachers use @GetKahoot@padlet@PearDeck@Flipgrid@nearpod#EquatIO - our teachers voice over & annotate PPT's for students if they miss class or need extra help! #masterychat
A2: Technology can help but also harm Ss. While it takes away from the face to face conversation it does allow Ss opportunity to be creative and innovative by mixing music, videos, podcasts into learning. Allow Ss a choice and they will foster growth within. #masterychat
A2 Proud to announce this is my first week using @Flipgrid & @Seesaw and so far WE ARE LOVING IT! Thank goodness for patient employees who encourage you to keep trying! @batool_attiya#MasteryChat
A1d - Here are 4 criteria that we use in class.
1. Is your work something that you believe is great?
2. Would your classmates be able to learn from your work?
3. Now that you’re done, are you proud of your accomplishment?
4. If you had a test would you earn an A? #masterychat
Q2 we have a GC discussion board, we run #BLinAction stations with tech, we GHangout with other classes and lower grades, @flipgrid, @goformative, and encourage @twitter communication not just to gain followers. #masterychat
Q2: I have been introduced to/ used Google Hangouts, Flipgrid, and school-affliated social media accounts to help Ss share their work, thoughts, and progress. #masterychat
Invite them to do so. It’s a very diverse environment. My Hispanic Ss was talking about its heritage month and my school celebrate usu after school. I decided to celebrate in advisory all week. They’re stoked. I don’t understand a lot of Spanish but I understand Joy #MasteryChat
A1 I am working with students at knowing & owning their story. I want them to be proud of who they are & learn from their journey. I try to include their story/passions/interests in what & how we learn. It takes time to build confidence in their voice; ultimate goal. #MasteryChat
A1: we use digital journalism at the elementary level to help students see themselves inside the story. Activists reporting activism creates an empowering echo—kids leading kids #MasteryChat
A2: This is a rough question for me. We are supposed to be a 1:1!school, but in reality only about 20% of my SS have devices. I am struggling with this. But keep smiling and moving on! #MasteryChat
Jumping in late! First year 7th grade math teacher! This I need some work on, I want to use technology for another way for students to communicate. I am still learning google classroom. #masterychat
A2: Here’s a video I made explaining how I use @writereaderapp to amplify student voice! Great platform and easy for students to use!
Don't Just Make Students Write - Make them Authors! https://t.co/QCn3kMgT5T#masterychat
A2 Social media, flipgrid, and google classroom are a few that we use. Still working on the social media interns and giving them the freedom to tell their story... trying to let go! #masterychat
A2.5 - Once in a while I ask students to record an audio clip instead of a piece of writing.
Where do I grade them? On the treadmill! Every few minutes, a new student's voice joins me on the walk.
#masterychat
Ok, maybe you can offer me some insight on Powtoons. I have tried to use it before, but it ends up taking FOREVER for students to create something with it. It ends up eating up so much time. :( Do you see that with your students? Any suggestions? #masterychat
In reply to
@ArmstreetsClass, @Flipgrid, @GoogleForEdu, @prezi, @canva, @PowToons
A2: Our tech tool was a simulator. We took 6 plant operators into a room that mimicked the plant's control room with computer simulatoons.
We ran all sorts of casualty training and constantly focused on teamwork and communication #MasteryChat
A2 My students write about topics that matter to them—coming out, battling physical and mental illnesses, dealing with racist comments. If the work is personally meaningful, sharing isn’t always appropriate.
#MasteryChat
A2: I'm going broad here: the internet itself, really, and the ability for our students to access it instantly.
There are few things as powerful as the access to information in fostering and supporting choice & voice. Likewise, any platform to share ideas thereafter #masterychat
I like that! Do you do that for them giving feedback to you or for them giving information about where they are in their understanding (kind of like a bird's eye view of where the class as a whole is)? #masterychat
A2) Blank Google Slides are my fave! No prep....everyone make a new slide and put your info on it. Shares with me and the class. Comment on other slides for more collaboration! #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A2 We use Skype, Hangouts & FaceTime. Last year did two cultural conversations: One with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷 over gender inequality & one from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 over current events. Students shared their views and learn to agree to disagree.
A2 @Flipgrid was definitely their favorite last year. I also like Seesaw because they got to pick and choose what they want to share and got to speak on them. This year, I will try it with Class Dojo since my school is using the site. #masterychat
A2: I focus less on using the tools (we rarely do) but do focus on using social media appropriately and intelligently. Quote often heard in my room: Keep your stupid secret. No need to post everything especially if you want your voice to be taken seriously. #masterychat
This is the best! I do this all the time and it helps students to have a black canvas to work from. It is the digital equivalent of a sheet of paper and I love it. #masterychat
A1: I use Flipgrid for discussion, and ss reflection. Next week my Google Classroom discussions begin. SS post by Wednesday and reply to at least 2 people by Friday. #MasteryChat
A2- we have started a journey where kids use Google Slides to explore diversity by crowdsourcing digital journalism. Using tech to connect kids that wouldn’t otherwise connect #MasteryChat
Perhaps the age group I worked with when I tried to use it before was problematic- 5th graders. Probably needed more scaffolding in using it than I provided at the time. #masterychat
A1: I'm adult ed, this holds true too. We constantly focused on getting individuals to voice their opinions to the supervisors in training.
We'd go as far as having supervisors purposefully give incorrect orders during training to challenge individuals to speak up. #MasteryChat
It is so simple. Choose three colors, name them with at least two words, and pin them to your Google Keep account. Then students can use and refer to them all year. #masterychat
A2 So many apps to tap into the goodness in. Flipgrid, Seesaw, Nearpod, Chatterpix, Picture apps, and so much more! Technology is a huge part for our students. #Masterychat
Agreed. I just compiled a bunch of #TeachSDGs infographics that my students did into a published webpage and it was all done through Google Slides. Super simple. #masterychat
#MasteryChat A2 Also have used Skype, FaceTime and to connect with history makers. Students designed questions and participated in a discussion with them. Some of our speakers.
Collaborations with students around the world. So meaningful. And so much faster than the letters I used to send in my day lol (and cheaper) haha #MasteryChat
A3 - The easiest way to give value to a voice is to LISTEN, and acknowledge the value of the content, information, and ideas they are providing. Speaking up can be hard. The worst thing we can do is “shut a student down” which stops them from EVER doing it again! #masterychat
A3: Take the time to be present and listen to what your Ss have to say. Provide specific praise and feedback. Encourage your Ss to keep sharing their voice! #MasteryChat
A3 I go out of my way to find them at lunch, walk w/ them between class, ask how they are doing.
I try to remember something significant going on in their lives and then deliberately ask them about it! Even bring their interests into our math class in some way! #masterychat
A3 I ask them questions or get them to lead learning. I want to hear every student speak daily. It is important to not only listen with intent to question. Once I learn about my students, I make sure to have conversations, to incorporate their lives in my classroom. #MasteryChat
LOVE pre/post assessments and curriculum compacting! Have you looked into #thegridmethod? I use it for structuring student paced learning and the preassessments I do for each unit put students at the exact level of need within the grid. I love it! #masterychat
A3: By asking them their opinion, and not just about the topics or choices. But about how to meet curriculum standards, about how to assess, about how to learn and present information.
And then, most importantly, acting on it. #masterychat
A3: I have learned to listen on their level. Sit with a sitter, stand with a stander and be fully present.
Process before proceeding. Much more engaging (and more residual) conversations that way.
#masterychat
A2: Not adding anything new here, but definitely @Flipgrid and @Seesaw .. I am working on using both of these this year with my new staff! #masterychat
A2 My two go-to tech tools this year are @Flipgrid & @Instagram. I want my kids to feel comfortable sharing their voice (audio/video). As English is their second language, I want them to build confidence in expressing themselves in another language. To not be afraid. #MasteryChat
A3-in my ‘Show Me Something’ assignments. No rules on what medium they use, only have to prove they get it. I get videos, writings, slide decks, cartoons, drawings, etc...how doesn’t matter -THAT IS THEIR VOICE- I care about the what. #masterychat
A3 Listen to what they say. Consider that feedback, and implement it when it makes sense. Seeing that what they share is actually being utilized can go along away to making Ss more comfortable speaking up. #MasteryChat
I LOVE that I have FINALLY discovered a way to Conference One-on-One with Students Multiple Times a week! I love finally having permission to just talk with my students, build relationships, and hear their story.
Time for Eye Contact is impactful #MasteryChat
A3 - Simple. Tell them. We were writing today and I would come up behind students and read their paragraph. I would just give them a thumbs up and a piece of advice. It made a lot of difference in the way their understood and worked on the essay. #MasteryChat
Last year, we wrote a book about our town's history in my Humanities classes + we used in-text QR codes to link to videos of students talking about their selected place + their writing process. We also created an interactive Google map. #MasteryChathttps://t.co/LCC8uWm132
A3: Just today, we were playing mix, pair, share. It was at the point of mix, and one Ss tried to snub another and pass her up. I stopped the game, and retaught the behavior - emphasizing the importance of her voice. #MasteryChat
All Ss seek attention, some behaviors come across as bad, but in reality the answer is simple. You listen with your eyes not your ears. Make your Ss feel as if no one else is in the room. When they ask “Do you have a minute?” The answer is “I have 5.” #masterychat
A3 - Again, “this is your class, make it great!” Most students are never used to hearing that. It’s empowering him to them that they can have a positive voice in their learning. #masterychat
A3: It's simple- I show that I listen. If they tell me they got lost during a lesson, I review & reteach. If they say, "Mrs. Hopp, we get it already!", I move on 😂 I also try to remember things they tell me about themselves- goes a long way to build relationships! #MasteryChat
A3: tell them they are awesome each and every day. I listen when they talk and give them space and give them space and time to breathe and be a little silly. #MasteryChat
A3 Give students a time to share, provide times for them to express themselves, listen to what Ss are saying, and provide different modalities to ensure all students can have their voice heard. #Masterychat
A3: Let them speak, especially with current events. Civic engagement can help students interact with curriculum in so many ways. Give them options when you can to add their own spin to assignments and projects. #MasteryChat
A3: I used a mail merge to send personalized responses to student surveys - it was 1-2 sentences per kid for me, but they each got an email, addressed to them, responding to something they had shared. And then, be available for follow up chats! #masterychat
Private 1-1 conversations on Google Docs. "Mathacognition" Talking about their emotions, struggles, and successes. ALSO, thank EVERY S who offers an answer AND a Q! "Thank you for asking!" creates an environment of inquiry, growth, and generosity. #MasteryChat
A3 Listen to what they say. Consider that feedback, and implement it when it makes sense. Seeing that what they share is actually being utilized can go along away to making Ss more comfortable speaking up. #MasteryChat
A2 biggest deal w/ tech is to run against cultural norm: students as consumers— our kids need to be producers—let them play and hack programs to tell their story—turn them into hacktivists #MasteryChat
A3) as a principal, I know their names, what activities they are in, what they are into. It's my job to know my students and let them know someone cares what they care about. #MasteryChat
A3: I get to know them, ask questions about their lives, their family, their interests. To quote all the @teachbetterteam “Relationship, Relationships, Relationships!!!” #MasteryChat@SSCMSStallions
A3: By celebrating success! Inside of the classroom & out. Have some time? Go to a game or concert. Ask them about it the next day. In class ask students to share their thoughts & feelings. Re-state back to them to show you intently listened. Respect them. #MasteryChat
A1: By building trust and relationships with my Ss, I let them know they are valued and loved. Once Ss realize they are in a safe place, they gain confidence to sharing their stories. Helps them be proud of who they are! #relationshipsmatter#OtherPeopleMatter#masterychat
A3. Once a math answer or process is given, even if it is totally wrong... I encourage and tell them what they did beautifully! This destroys the fear of speaking up in math. #masterychat
A3: I let students know I value them and their voice by writing personal notes. I give these long ones at the end of the year, and small reminders on sticky notes every now and then. #masterychat
A3 Build relationships, I ask to hear their voice, I have a @goPEEQ so they are heard by the class, I ask their opinions, encourage them to correct me or ask questions during our discussions, I visit them at their outside activities, talk with them at lunch & recess #masterychat
A3 when discussing a topic and they have a story to share I ask if they have any artifacts to go with it- photos, materials, etc. and have Ss bring them in and TEACH for a few minutes. Kids are teachers too, this is OUR classroom. #MasteryChat
A3: This chat is certainly highlighting things I need to get better at. As I said earlier, providing a video response to their intros was one way. #Masterychat
In winter (when everything sucks), I will take one class period...have everyone sit in a circle...and give each S public praise for their unique contribution to the class. Thanksgiving/Valentines all at once when it's needed most. #masterychat
A3: I value my Ss by talking to them about life & their interests, asking their opinions, having them reflect, collaborate with peers & teaching them how to give feedback #masterychat
A1: A1: I make sure from day ONE, they know their voice, opinion, likes, dislikes, past, future ALL matter! I teach them to advocate for themselves and others.. and celebrate even small successes to make them feel empowered and inspired! #masterychat
A1 I am working with students at knowing & owning their story. I want them to be proud of who they are & learn from their journey. I try to include their story/passions/interests in what & how we learn. It takes time to build confidence in their voice; ultimate goal. #MasteryChat
Principals round table where we have student reps from each grade level who share their ideas. Important to actually put some of their ideas into place! #MasteryChat
Q3: I have and will continue to employ empathy when hearing Ss stories; I try to deal with their issues as openly as possible when needed. I also use S work as in-class exemplars as allowed and input for my construction of lessons to keep reflective. #masterychat
A3: I listen. I tell them. I disagree with them. I let them disagree with me. I don’t do everything well, but I have zero doubt they know how important using their voices are to me. #masterychat
A3 We can let students know we appreciate their voices by having them appreciate each other: Who is our class supports you? Who pushes you to think differently or more deeply? Who inspires you by setting a positive example? https://t.co/y2kYJvCFCc#MasteryChat
A3: LISTEN I cannot stress this enough. Every student has a voice and each voice is valued. Make time for each student. I used to make a point of asking each student ‘are you ok?’ everyday! #Masterychat
A3: My students have the opportunity to share during our daily Morning Meeting. I also use the 2x10 strategy in which each student has my undivided attention for two minutes each day for ten minutes. We can ask each other questions or just talk about anything. #masterychat
I would not stand for a discouraging culture in my math classroom. We all have been in those math classes and no one wants to raise their hand. #masterychat
So important! Too many adults in their lives let those behaviors go—thinking they are minor. If we are working to make our Ss better people, we don’t need to be teaching. #masterychat
A3 Students know you value their voice when you actually value their voice, provide choice, and are REAL with them. Through relationships you build. #MasteryChat
With @Skyline_WC, our peer writing center, we publish a lit mag of student writing called Teen Spirit + we hold a school-wide Writing Prize competition where students submit work for cash prizes + a chance to read at @LiteratiBkstore. #MasteryChathttps://t.co/FttDskeClN

A3: Feedback, Feedback, Feedback! Following a training session or performance eval, we would break down the activities and talk about communications.
We'd specifically identify areas where speaking up led to successful outcomes or better performance. #MasteryChat
A3: Listening to my Ss- not to respond but to understand not just what is said, but also making an attempt to get to the unsaid. Sincerity and authenticity go a long way in building relationships. #relationshipsmatter#otherpeoplematter#masterychat
A3.2: i also have students reflect on what they like and don’t like about my class/ activities and try to adapt to their liking within reason. I once had a student ask why the heck I care so much about what they think and by the end she thanked me for it. #Masterychat
I try to give them undivided attention and eye contact. I don't let other Ss interrupt when they're talking to me one on one. I'm stern but patient. I never talk down to them/yell. Basically I try to treat them with respect so they know how I expect to be treated.
#MasteryChat
Acknowledge them, greet them at the door, allot talk time, let them hear each other’s voice. Share out or 📚time; I command undivided attention. Build relationships, so that they’ll confide in you. My favorite line “give yourself a round of applause” see pinned tweet #MasteryChat

A3-I have a “tootling” bd for students to leave good notes (instead of tattling) I leave a ❤️sticker when I’ve read them. I also utilize active listening skills in class. + pos. Reinforcement #masterychat
A3: Feedback, Feedback, Feedback! Following a training session or performance eval, we would break down the activities and talk about communications.

A3- give student voice a stage! A megaphone! It can be hard work to fit student vision into our complex world— but the effort changes lives #MasteryChat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A4: Ss have the opportunity to choose HOW they want to share their voice with others. @Flipgrid & @Seesaw are great tech tools that allow my Ss the freedom to share at their own pace & have control of the final product! #MasteryChat
A4 It matters little to me HOW Ss share their voice. Some prefer using their voice in other less voice-y ways: editing a classmate's video or creating a computer program are ways to have them share their own ideas and perspectives w/o putting them on the spot. #masterychat
A4 I offer suggestions for learning productions and experiences. When a student doesn’t feel comfortable I allow changes based on our conversations. I always like to set goals to improve and challenge but I want students to build on their personal goals & objectives. #MasteryChat
Q4 Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences?
#MasteryChat
A4 - I allow choice and differentiation through many aspects of #thegridmethod and implementing #masterylearning. This naturally allows for differentiation as well as choice and personalization for learners! #masterychat
A3: We set class norms rather than me giving rules. Students used post its to brainstorm, categorized, then prioritized with stickers (each student got 5 priority stickers). After we agreed to them, I shared that I expected they would hold me accountable to them, too #masterychat
A3 - Might be slightly easier in my subject (Philosophy and religion) but I always make sure I never interrupt a student when they’re sharing. And always make a comment directly related to what they’ve said #masterychat#edchat
A2: @GoogleForEdu has changed my teaching, Classroom and Slides especially. Just started using @Seesaw and I can’t wait to see how my students use this tool. #MasteryChat
Q4 Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences?
#MasteryChat
A3: It doesn't take much nor does it need to be over the top, innovative ideas. It's simple: Ask them questions. Listen. Follow-Up. Take Notice. Call them out. Celebrate. Say Thank You. If you do those things, they will feel #allthefeels. #masterychat
A4: Again Flipgrid is great for this, however, you can always have ss create a video and just share it with you, not the entire class. Memes might work too. #MasteryChat
A4: “Voices” don’t have to be heard orally. I got my only B in H.S. in the subject I now teach because I was shy and couldn’t participate in discussions. Voices can be heard through writing, actions, AND speech. #masterychat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A4: I offer a variety of platforms for Ss response for every assignment: verbal, written, acting it out, app smashing. I want Ss to own their learning & know their voice is important. #masterychat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A4 - We need to give them the opportunity to share their ideas to smaller and larger audiences. Be that with just the teacher, a table within the classroom, the whole class, or the whole school! #masterychat#edchat
A4 - Give options for major assignments. We rarely want to force kids into a situation that makes them uncomfortable. It’s all about finding their own way to learn and communicate. Of course, adding humor and sensitivity can break the ice big time. Make them 😆#masterychat
A4: I’ve really transitioned more each year towards student choice. I try to expose students to different platforms with smaller assignments and then give them a choice of several options on the bigger assignments #Masterychat
A4: I start by learning what their preferences are, lots of opportunities to share in small groups, slow work on pushing past "sharing comfort zones," and a commitment to respect their needs as we go through the process. #masterychat
A3 - Might be slightly easier in my subject (Philosophy and religion) but I always make sure I never interrupt a student when they’re sharing. And always make a comment directly related to what they’ve said #masterychat#edchat
A4) student voice doesn't mean it has to be out loud.... Choice on how they present what they know rewards extro- and introverts. The world needs all kinds.
#MasteryChat
A4: Choice. Choice. Choice. Identify your leaders, and turn the class over to them. Invite them to get buy in from entire class. Constantly rearrange seats and environment so Ss don’t get too comfortable but rather chance to feel it’s new and fresh #masterychat
This! I always WANT my students to be able to express themselves, question, and share in the whole group, but that just doesn't work for all of them. I certainly don't want to squelch them because they struggle in that area! #masterychat
A4: “Voices” don’t have to be heard orally. I got my only B in H.S. in the subject I now teach because I was shy and couldn’t participate in discussions. Voices can be heard through writing, actions, AND speech. #masterychat

A4: Give multiple options for how they show their learning - talk, write, create...
Some do better when I have privacy settings on @flipgrid or Google Classroom.
Communication via email - they can always ask questions or clarify w/out speaking in front of anyone.
#MasteryChat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A4 This is where Flipgrid comes in, as well as Google Slides, conferences, small group work, creative projects, iMovie, choice boards, etc. The process tells us so much! Where a S might be quiet when asked to tell, they SHOUT when asked to show. #masterychat
A4 In giving options. Just this week we’ve had S known for never talking getting involved b/c the noise level has everyone talking. S realizing the conversations are geared toward helping her. Also w/ choice. 50+ cereals to choose from, why only one output option? #masterychat
A4: I feel like it comes down to relationships and differentiation. Diff because I give choices relationships because they tell me when they don’t like something, want to do something else. giving ss s voice is pointless if you don’t build relationships with each ss.#MasteryChat
A3: I try to provide them feedback and say phrases like "I love that idea!" "I like the way you are thinking!" "Wow' why didn't I think of that!" If we want to build confidence in our students, we should be highlighting their voices. #MasteryChat
A4: Think pair share works. Small group discussions on topics does as well. Discussion boards also allow students who aren’t comfortable talking to speak up. #MasteryChat
A3: I show my Ss I value them by building connections w/them and their families, having lunch with them, throwing a football at recess, or just giving them a quick fist bump #MasteryChat
A4: I had students who we reluctant to share their story; however after reading aloud several inspirational personal narratives, they realized the power storytelling can have!
We read: Turning Pages; My Shoes and I; My Name is Jorge!
#masterychat
A4: It is important to realize that not all students share their voices by being vocal. Teachers must provide opportunities for students to be heard in other ways... discussion boards, artwork, photography, writing. #MasteryChat
A4- when I discover a quiet one, I watch for those “I got it!” Looks & be sure to call on them. Quiet conversations w/them helps me learn where I can help them be more brave #masterychat
A4: Always planning at least 3 diff types of reflection - individual/written, small and large group. With presentations, giving kids the option of how they will present, and what their role is within a presentation team. Stretching their comfort a little @ a time. #masterychat
Q4 Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences?
#MasteryChat
A4 I’ve moved to mini-lessons and shared experiential activities with enrichment extensions that offer choice/differentiated options that provide students more voice. This year I am adding in weekly or biweekly reflection assignments on their learning #masterychat
Q4 Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences?
#MasteryChat
A4 Provide different modalities for students. Some do better recording their voices, others may need to record their faces, and some want to speak in front of others. #masterychat
In math, some Ss like to hold the marker (authors). Others like to observe and make corrections or ask Qs (editors). Others like to see what other groups are doing (industrial spies!). Give everyone a choice in their role! Encourage change from time to time. #masterychat
Q4: I try to implement differentiation of form into each of my lessons, as well as encourage small group spreading according to skill level and engagement; I need to work on being mindful of potential unbalance and alienation. #masterychat
Stop🛑thinking that noise level represents poor management and silence represent learning is going on. How do we know what they’ve learned if they’re always silent. I want to👂 their voices, I love calling them by name just because, I always use please and thank you #MasteryChat
A4, part 1: Give students choice about how to share. Menus of options or broader autonomy.
Or even complete autonomy: use short pitches to allow students to put thought into the format and sell it to you. #masterychat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A4, part 2: As an introverted learner myself (when I was younger especially, can't shut me up now), back channels to share ideas are everything. #masterychat
We should should provide multiple pathways to + multiple mediums for participation while still working with students to grow their speaking + listening skills in authentic, low-stakes ways. Speaking + listening standards are often the most neglected! #MasteryChat
A4.5 - Breakthrough moment this summer when a Syrian student of mine shared a music video to contribute to our song analysis unit. He was hesitant and nervous, but after some reassurance, he played it and then his CULTURE was in the room... and he smiled.
#masterychat
Giving them a choice of tools to express themselves- they can talk to me, they can talk to another trusted adult like the school counselor, write me a note that is kept confidential or draw a picture about their feelings or any other way they think is good for them. #masterychat
A4: Since I work with such young students, I realize pretty early on those who need a gentle push and those who just need more time. When I was little I barely spoke, so I get it! I don't force young students to answer if they aren't ready. They'll get there.

Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A4- when a student isn’t comfortable sharing voice i try to remember that it might be that we aren’t hearing them! If we all focus on learning new languages each day we are ultimately giving kids more ears for their voice #MasteryChat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5: It's awesome to hear your Ss perspective on different ideas! When you stop to listen to what your Ss have to say, you gain great insight and better understanding of them. You can even discover new ideas when you ask for their suggestions! #MasteryChat
A5 I have learned how many varied experiences my students have lived. From death, to lack of confidence, to fears; when you give students a chance to share voices/experiences you can learn so much from them. Their lives become moments. They become our teacher. #MasteryChat
A5 My Ss have taught me...
*They care much more deeply than their behaviors and actions might indicate. *When given a format they are comfortable with, they want to share their thoughts with the world.
*When we listen, they can teach US more than we can teach them!
#MasteryChat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5 - Students are amazingly honest and usually thoughtful when given the chance. This is a huge benefit to listening to them unfiltered like many adults become. You an SEE / HEAR their thinking. This is immensely valuable #masterychat
A5: With their confidence unlocked, I learn their stories. What influences their writing, their literary interpretations, their judgments? Their past.
https://t.co/99JhF2Rtck#masterychat
A5. That they really do have some OUTSTANDING this to offer to the class. I love hearing their perspectives. #masterychat We have a job that gives us the opportunity to be blown away by kids and their imaginations. #masterychat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5: So much more than I ever would have thought. & sometimes, it's after I have put my foot in my mouth. It has made me realize to ask more questions. We have to find out their WHY. What makes them tick. ASK them questions. LISTEN. #masterychat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5: I've learned how important it is for us to understand the real pressure Ss are under in HS, I've learned that Ss just want me to care about them and their interests, and I've learned that the most important thing I can do as a teacher is stopping to talk #masterychat
A5 - Follow the 10 second rule. Listen and wait 10 seconds for answers and discussions to percolate. I’ve learned the value of patience. Students will share ideas and their love of learning when we provide time and feedback that encourages that part of class. #masterychat
A5: Overall, I’ve learned that they’re they’re smarter than I give them credit for and sometimes way more intelligent than I am. They come up with ideas I’ve never thought of and have questions I don’t know the answers to. #masterychat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A4 I’ve learned that Elem teachers have had it right all along. The station rotations of #BLinActuon has allowed me to get to know, listen to, work with, guide, and trouble shoot learning gaps faster than ever before. My Sec is now a learning stations stoping place #Masterychat
Ss have told me a lot. That they'd prefer their tests on Thursdays....or 2nd period. That sometimes I give them TOO MUCH choice and freedom and they'd prefer a bit of swaddling. That if I'm going to bring fruit from the dining hall, it should be more green apples! #masterychat
A5 I have learned they sound like little adults. I ❤️listening them present at PD. They share what they have learned and want other classes to have the same opportunity. #masterychat

Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5: not only do I find out more about them individually like their hobbies and interests, but my favorite is how they can make my activities and class better. Some of the best stuff I do in my class is what students have suggested over the years. #Masterychat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5: if they aren’t talking to you, they’re talking about you.I try not to get offended when they complain about something I’ve done. It shows they are comfort. to use their voice. that is a main priority. They complain about other tt and refuse to say to their face. #MasteryChat
A4-some more... I have discovered if you have them write w/a different tool (crayon, color pencils, etc) those shy ones seem to open up a little-like it’s a disguise #masterychat
A3 I try to provide a safe environment where Ss feel comfortable expressing themselves. I am constantly asking my Ss what they think about what we are doing - what works, what doesn’t work and ask for suggestions. Every yr things change based on their feedback. #masterychat
We had our first Harkness Discussions today in #HumLit1819 + I'm reminded in these moments how much students can learn + share without my direct involvement. Long story short: I learn to shut up + let them shine! I scribe + take notes to capture the amazingness! #MasteryChat
A5: They HAVE opinions, and they care deeply. They don’t get asked to share it very often by adults in their life. That even at 11 or 12, they know what they believe and they’re capable of high level convos about them. We must give them the space to practice. #masterychat
Q5 When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice?
#MasteryChat
A5:
Current events or new tech I'm not aware of!
New ways to share info or create products!
New trends/music/things I can talk with them about!
Their home life (good/bad/ugly) bc they want someone to know!
I learn the most when they talk and I listen!

A5: the weather forecast. We have a S who loves the weather and will tell us all about it. Sitting at lunch or walking in the halls between passing bells GTK your Ss outside of the classroom. #masterychat
A4: In our team training, we focus on different ways to communicate. Some are ok with making making loud announcements. Others make a quick statement to their peer.
As long as the team gets the message, we don't force it unless it's an emergency message. #Masterychat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A5 One of my students showed me how to fix another students animation clip in IMovie when we couldn’t fix it in the app it was created in. It worked 🤩😀#masterychat
A5 I learned about them, that sometimes I talk to fast, that just because they were "supposed" to learn it doesn't mean they did, that why should be answered more often, that they have more baggage at their age, then I could have nightmared, they feel safe in 214 #masterychat
Q4: Some students are more comfortable than others when sharing their voice.
How do you allow for choice and differentiation when planning for student voice in your learning experiences? #MasteryChat
A5 I’m not teaching them what they already know, focusing only on needs, allowing deeper exploration. B/c I’ve had more time to get to know them as a person, the learning process is not blocked by missing trust. #Masterychat
Hi, Debb from SC, middle school drama. Sorry I missed such an important topic. With friends tonight trying not to think about the hurricane. 💨 #masterychat
A5: I’ve learned the less I hear my own voice and the more I hear theirs we learn more, laugh more, ask questions more, and know each other more as individuals and not just a group that works together. #MasteryChat
A5: Listening is everything. Often, the most challenging of situations or students can be helped by being there to listen.
It's one of the most important first steps in being a positive influence. Students want to be heard more than we realize sometimes. #masterychat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A5: My students teach me something new everyday with their voice. When we stop to listen to their story, we gain grace for them, and better understand the page of their story we walked in on. #MasteryChat
A5- student voice can remind us of what bravery looks and feels like. We can get so buried in our expertise that we need to be reminded what it looks like to bring something brand new into the world. Student voice=student heroes #MasteryChat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
I'm also reminded often when teachers talk how folks get lulled into underestimating students rather than empowering them. When students are empowered with our trust + feel agency in school, there's a sense of urgency + meaning they feel + it's incredible. #MasteryChat
A5: I have learned that many of my students do not have an ideal home environment. Knowing this helps me be more understanding and not so quick to react when they display undesirable behavior. #masterychat
A5: Students depending on their age see things very in every shade imaginable. Children do not see color, sex, religion they just see a new friend to play with. Innocence before life influences take hold. Live is very simple through a child's eyes! #Masterychat
I'm also reminded often when teachers talk how folks get lulled into underestimating students rather than empowering them. When students are empowered with our trust + feel agency in school, there's a sense of urgency + meaning they feel + it's incredible. #MasteryChat
Q5: I have learned the value of wait time and being flexible with expectations and forms of engagement. The Ss I have had gave me verbal and written feedback, and allowed me to become comfortable in different presentations of excitement and focus. #masterychat
A5: My situation was unique. I led classes with operators who had 30+ yrs experience. They knew more than me and we all knew it.
I learned that if you design your lesson right, you can give them a starting push and they'll take over. Only steer when needed. #MasteryChat

A5 my kids are SO creative & SO hilarious. They have truly shown me why it’s so important to let Ss guide your instruction. They have so many ideas from projects to https://t.co/H438Rqoll5 they showed me there are many ways to interpret an assignment & still rock it! #MasteryChat

Q6 Voices are meant to transcend the four walls of the classroom.
What opportunities do you provide your students to share their voice with the world?
#MasteryChat
A5 -A5- They are passionate about their interests and want more rigor. They also need to know that someone truly cares about them everyday. The more you listen the more you empower our Ss to take ownership of their learning. #MasteryChat
A4: Flexibility in work processes and products are effective in giving choice and voice - especially for my Ss who are more intrapersonal in nature. We see the same information learned delivered by individuals in different & creative ways. #MasteryChat
A6 I want my students to use social media to share their positive voice. I want them to lead global collaborations where they can see their positive impact. They often don’t see their potential impact. I want them to see the good; I want them to find their purpose. #MasteryChat
A6 This is one I hesitate a little bit with. With privacy concerns, I don't like putting their videos or work out there in a very public way. BUT, I do have them share their work with other Ss and adults in the school and with parents. I'm open to ideas, though! #masterychat
A6 - AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE trying to allow students to publish their work and share with the community is so valuable! #teachfurther units are a great way to do this! #teachbetter#masterychat
A6: My Ss are able to connect w/ their digital penpals throughout the year! It provides them w/ a relevant audience & allows them to share their voice beyond our 4 walls!! #globalcollaboration#MasteryChat
A6: I'll be honest, I'm lacking in this area...in sharing outside the walls of the school! I'd love suggestions on how other Ts are doing this! #MasteryChat
Q6 Voices are meant to transcend the four walls of the classroom.
What opportunities do you provide your students to share their voice with the world?
#MasteryChat
It’s super easy! Sign up through your twitter account and it takes care of everything! I have my feed, notifications and #masterychat all rolling on my iPad screen! 👍🏼👍🏼
A6: Nothing you "turn in" is only for me or just for a grade.
Maintain the wider world audience so what Ss create is a publish, post, and contribution to grow our global understanding.

A5: over the past five yrs I have learned SO much from my Ss - I don’t even know where to start. I’d say the biggest thing I have learned is that when you allow them some freedom and help them to learn the way they learn they can do amazing things. #masterychat
In AP Stats, Ss create questions that we send to the student body. The Qs and results are relevant to students! Valuable to Ts....but relevant to Ss! #masterychat
A6: Our students go to the state PTSA Rally at the capital in Tallahassee where the students meet representatives and advocate for funding and positive change in schools. They are incredible. #MasteryChat
A6 I have my Ss meet and share their letters with community members they have written to. They present PD on metacognition and purposeful to the staff and at the District level. #masterychat

A6 A true growth goal. My students are so fearful of mistakes. Goal/teach them through letting them teach Little’s via hangouts. Voice may only travel a few miles now, but long term light years. #masterychat

A1. Building relationships is key! Getting to know each Ss and their interests and differences is important! Looking for strengths where Ss shine to encourage them to use these strengths in their empowerment! #masterychat
A6: This is the one I've never quite mastered, so I'm open to all suggestions. Actually - my students and I discussed started an Instagram account to share out some of the work we're doing. #masterychat
A6: I love @Flipgrid pals, especially w/ my Dual Language class, we also have Google Hangouts in every unit, and we have a 24 hour Skype-A-Thon in which we sleep at the school library with 20+ kids. It's awesome! #MasteryChat
A6: We are a school of global educations #uchonln. We try to open the doors to students, participate in #GlobalGoals and share ideas through platforms like Twitter and KidBlog. #MasteryChat

Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
A3 I teach them that when someone is speaking it matters. We practice listening. We celebrate each other's efforts and success. And I use video or scribing to record what the kiddos have to say. #MasteryChat
A6: I feel like they still need training before the put their ideas out in the world. I’m helping them with understanding what that all means. #masterychat
A6 - Flipgrid is a great tool. We are going to blog this year, which should really help get voices out to the world. I also share lots of posts and ideas from students on Twitter. #masterychat
A5: Last year, one of my Ss who was one of those "tough" kids to break through wrote a comic book and shared it. The book gave me a glimpse into his thinking and his impression of other Ts and I at our school. No matter how tough, they are still looking to connect. #MasteryChat
Q5: When we listen, students can teach us a lot.
What have you learned from your students when you've given them the opportunity to share their voice? #MasteryChat
I was just doing some writing this week about the expectations we have for our Ss. It is EASY to live in the mindset that they need our help in many things. It is HARD but CRITICAL to believe in their ability to do incredible things. They will rise to the occasion! #masterychat
A6 This is something I am working on at my school and with Teachers. We have ideas and have used SM and Flipgrid a bit but all ideas are welcomed! #MasteryChat
A5: I've learned that it's ok for me to be my silly, goofy self. They will love and understand me anyway. Also I've learned that their lives and so deep and varied. They've taught me that time goes so fast even when the days feel like they're going by so slowly.
#MasteryChat
Q6: I am still underdeveloped here, but I started the germination of a middle and high school connected writing center, and helped Ss interface with school created and community shared writing magazines. #masterychat
A6 Mostly, it's been global through environmental projects of raising oysters that go into our water to help clean the Chesapeake Bay, water testing and a project this year for the school, but you've definitely given me something to think on... #masterychat
A6: Well social media allows our students to share their voice without any of our help ( for sure). I embed social skills instruction throughout my day and encourage my students to use those skills not only at school but also at home.

A4 In order to be sure all students can share in their way I ask them how they want to share. Telling, writing, showing, or letting a friend take their turn. If they speak softly I let all the class know what was said. #masterychat
Once I finish my dissertation, I’d like to partner with others to work on historical argumentation between classes online. @chaunceymontesa it would be a dream to work with you! #MasteryChat
Speak their language 🗣 I allow them to Snapchat and capture every lab 🔬 they love to see and share what they’ve created or explored. I allow them to record our whole brain thinking table vs table peer teaching competition etc. I share within our school @SlackHQ#MasteryChat

A6: Everyday when they leave the walls of our school for home they take what we have learned & apply it into their life in some way, in real time, in the real world! That is the ultimate generalization of sharing their voice w/ new knowledge in our world. #MasteryChat
A5 By listening, I've learned why they are happy, sad, scared, worried, acting out, etc. I've learned what they think about all the time: crazy dreams, cars, football, their baby sister. Great connections made. #masterychat
A3. The best wat to let your Ss know you value them is to listen, show you care, smile, ask questions, listen to their stories, share info. about yourself, build trust! #masterychat
