#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff. #MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern. The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.

    After a very loooong day (just got home) I am so happy to be back for #masterychat -I am Tayler, an Academic Dean at a HS in Orlando, FL. This week a (former) student told me they I was the reason they pursued a 5yr Masters in Education. I cried.

    Give Ss voice by asking them about the SCHOOL environment..what could be better, what is working well. Make it worth their time. Frankly, their life story isn't going to help them solve an algebra problem. But it CAN make the learning/living environment better! #masterychat

    I do alot of stuff "on the fly", but one of the most effective ones is "thumbs up/thumbs down" during and after the lesson. Even high schoolers feel less self-conscious being truthful with this. I also take a minute or 2 at the end of class to let them just tell me! #masterychat

    #MasteryChat A2 We use Skype, Hangouts & FaceTime. Last year did two cultural conversations: One with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷 over gender inequality & one from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 over current events. Students shared their views and learn to agree to disagree.

    A3 - The easiest way to give value to a voice is to LISTEN, and acknowledge the value of the content, information, and ideas they are providing. Speaking up can be hard. The worst thing we can do is “shut a student down” which stops them from EVER doing it again! #masterychat

    LOVE pre/post assessments and curriculum compacting! Have you looked into #thegridmethod? I use it for structuring student paced learning and the preassessments I do for each unit put students at the exact level of need within the grid. I love it! #masterychat

    Q5: I have learned the value of wait time and being flexible with expectations and forms of engagement. The Ss I have had gave me verbal and written feedback, and allowed me to become comfortable in different presentations of excitement and focus. #masterychat
