A1: I make myself workout in the morning. It has to happen first, otherwise it gets skipped too often. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1 I try and get enough sleep. It has been a constant goal over the past 3 years. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1: I go for walks vowing to simply focus on observing what's around me and not ruminate on anuthing else. I also try my best to set aside some time to watch some mindless sitcom. Something to make me smile at the end of a long day. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:08 PM EST
Snow day today. Might have a delay tomorrow. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1 Striving to live up to my #oneword2018. Balance. Try to balance work, home, and play. And not beat myself up about not getting everything done. I self-talk as care for myself. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:10 PM EST
I've been trying hard to not beat myself up too. Nice to hear I'm not the only one. We can't do it all. We need to forgive ourselves when we don't. #scitlap

Q2: What is something you do to get pumped to bring Passion to the classroom everyday? #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:11 PM EST
Ahh...sleep. I live by the saying... "I'll sleep while Im dead". Also me: "Ooh, time for a quick nap". #scitlap

  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: I am a dork, but I plan with gusto, and get excited about "what we are going to do". Right now super pumped about a couple of lessons I am teaching on Friday, to the point that I want to just skip tomorrow! #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: I like to share silly stories with students about my life and about my family. Makes me laugh. #scitlap

    In reply to @MarianaGSerrato
  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2 Music! and a deep breath. I've been struggling with the passion this year I'll admit. #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Mar 7 @ 9:15 PM EST
Algorithm for burnout: Ramen > tired > coffee > frozen burritos > tired > more coffee > tired > more coffee > stomach ache > tired. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
I get excited about lessons too, but more apprehensive and nervous this year. Challenging group of learners. I had to plan more to try and get them motivated. #scitlap
    In reply to @MarianaGSerrato
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
I feel you. You are also in middle school, right? Perhaps it's this particular year of birth. #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 If I'm excited, I can't hold it in...plus pre-heating the grill is some of the best advice I ever got. Everybody wins when kids run to your room. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:18 PM EST
Q3 How do you allow students to showcase their own passions in the classroom? #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:18 PM EST
    Years ebb and flow. #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:18 PM EST
Much like my other reply, this year's kids have been, as a whole, much more challenging (or maybe it's me whose patience is growing thin). #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:18 PM EST
I always have more passion when I am teaching a new lesson I designed. I like the creativity and I am excited for the new challenge. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
There are hard years and hard classes. No magic wands. Teaching is hard work. #scitlap

  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: A class needed a reboot so I took out the play-doh and everyone shared a bit about themselves! It was great. #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Mar 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2: Making things. Right now it’s paper air rockets. Brings energy to the room. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3 Tried out Genius Hour this year and while it needs tweaking, it was an amazing experience. Best part was changing up my seating to be more Googlely. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: Although choice does not equal passion. I encourage kids to explore and express themselves in a wide variety of ways. This sometimes leads to passion projects. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
I love genius hour! I love when kids see each other's passion! #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3 I've been trying to get Ss to do a few sidequests where they can share their passions. Write songs, draw pictures etc. Not many takers yet. #scitlap #XPLAP
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: I have found myself teaching 4th grade. Long story. 3 days in, I'm imagining dioramas for our next writing project. I want to see them build! #dioramasRock #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
Q4: How can you "fake it till you make it" when you are not passionate about a topic? #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
I taped secret sidequests under my tables. Took them awhile to find them. I also let them replace their daily work with a sidequest. - I did it once. - #scitlap Big Hit!

  • pentaclethra Mar 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
A4 Find an angle that works for you or Ss. Think of an activity you know that you enjoy or Ss enjoy. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4: I have taught a 3/4 split class for the last 3 days. No clue what I am doing. I LOVE the kids. Love my experience as a teacher and not being a newbie anymore. LOVE is the answer. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
I'm sure you have, but perhaps making a huge deal out of one student doing one might encourage others to try. #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4 I am not passionate about Earth Science YET. Trying to find ways to spice it up. I integrated green screens this year because it added something exciting to my lesson. Still seeking fun lessons for next year. I look at it like a treasure hunt! #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4: Yes - fake it till you make it - BUT ALSO - admit your weakness. Be honest. Be open to learning. Tell the kids I'm new at this. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
Interesting. I totally get ditching the flex seating. Why no doc cam? #scitlap
    In reply to @HowardKiyuna
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
Oh yes, I always tell them stuff like that. I ask for help...why not? #scitlap

  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
I LOVE EARTH SCIENCE! Have you ever taken a geology class that is field trip based? #scitlap That's when I found my passion for rocks.
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4: I am honest with the kids and tell them when I don't "feel" a topic. Since they know I try really hard to make things interesting and "cool", they respond #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:30 PM EST
OR, have you ever taught rocks to 1st graders? WE do a rock show- and - tell. CUTEST THING EVER. I found this rock in my driveway. I think this rock is a magic smoke rock. . .. #scitlap

Q5) if a stranger walked in your classroom, what 3 words would he/she use to describe it? #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Mar 7 @ 9:32 PM EST
No, but that actually sounds fun. Rocks just rock!!! (Lol - that's me faking it). All kidding aside, your my girl for ideas on this, now that I know. And honestly a field trip class really does sound fun. #scitlap
    In reply to @sbosch_spps
  • MarianaGSerrato Mar 7 @ 9:32 PM EST
I was also not an Earth Science person. However, it has grown on me with some of the cool things you can do. Snak tectonics, starburst rock cycle, and exploding volcanos BUT with different magma compositions #scitlap

2 More questions #scitlap I'm really enjoying this hour with you tonight.
  • sbosch_spps Mar 7 @ 9:44 PM EST
They are so fun! Not as horribly messy as I imagined. Just leave them set up all day if you can. Start with one as a demo. Kids will need time to play "sandbox" and get it out of their system at first. #scitlap

A7 So many thoughts actually and they teeter back in forth from wanting to take a huge stand to just wanting to ignore all the noise and worry about the kids in front of me. Really bothered though about everybody's opinions that put a negative light on teachers. #scitlap
