Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
#UDLchat is already buzzing! The moment we have been waiting for is here! #UDLchat is NOW! Start with brief introductions and share one ah-ha! moment from today
#udlchat - hope y’all have a great chat tonight. I’m heading in early, but wanted to toss out that there’s a special opportunity to hit up ANOTHER chat tomorrow focused on higher ed (#UDLHE) check it out! https://t.co/u5v000lDPr
I’m Dakota from Indiana. One “ah-ha” moment is when I realized I could use @Newsela’s tiered lexile feature to help encourage more independence in reading for my students with intensive needs. #UDLchat
Hi all. Danny in a chilly Toronto. Marijuana is legal in Canada today. Woo Hoo. Ah-ha: it can be really fun to ask students what they want their exam to be and how it should be evaluated. #udlchat
Loui Lord Nelson from Indianapolis. My ah-ha...I figured out how to create and uploaded an audio description file to my collection of supports for last week's UDL in 15 Minutes. Hooray! #udlchat
One of my ah-ha's: When a student applied his talent of quickly sketching his idea and then began to write his response and he said, " Booyah! Sketching made this so much easier!" #udlchat
Hi everyone. I'm from Ohio and I love connecting with my UDL family! One aha moment from today is you can't ever predict which action of yours will impact the life of another forever. We don't get to choose our student's memories. #UDLchat
Good evening UDL Rockstars! I’m Megan from PA. Today was a great day at Ringgold School District. Many of our educators participated in a UDL Design Lab and they Rocked IT! @RSDRAMS@RinggoldNorth@RinggoldSouth@Ringgold_HS#UDLchat
New to Universal Design for Learning? Did you know #UDL is a framework that has foundations in cognitive neuroscience? Check out UDL and the Learning Brain from @CAST_UDL: https://t.co/I1GJICgbOJ#UDLchat
Hi #UDLChat colleagues! Matt Holloway from #MAEdu I’m excited to listen in tonight! My “aha” for the day has to do with the “Self Directed Learning Model of Instruction”
#UDLchat is already buzzing! The moment we have been waiting for is here! #UDLchat is NOW! Start with brief introductions and share one ah-ha! moment from today
Hi all! It's been a while. I'm Misty from Ohio. My a-ha from today was when I couldn't contain my excitement about the book, neither could the kids! #udlchat
OK...so as you keep sharing ah-ha's--I have to get rolling--we are using the fabulous and powerful 4 A's Protocol...so get ready to embrace how your beliefs shape all you do for learners! #udlchat
Hi! Robin from Pa.
A moment when my college student said "why would you punish when you can teach?" Yes!! Turning out some great future teachers! #udlchat
Alexis from Boston... ah-ha! Moment was from HS students tonight realizing that procrastination actually is about prioritization #TedTalks and instant gratification monkeys! #UDLchat
The 4A's protocol will roll quite simply tonight...you will just share your thinking around Assumptions, Agreements, Arguments, Aspirations…so...what are we waiting for!?!!! #UDLchat
Lindsay from Ohio...my “aha” moment was that full implementationoccurs when 50% of practitioners meet fidelity standard for using the innovation in practice. #udlchat
Welcome to everyone! and a shout out to lurkers...who I'm sure will feel the urge to share their Twitter voice in no time! ...Q1...is here...any...second! #UDLchat
A1: such a great Q! Assumptions can often become a barrier for many trying to implement UDL... it's so important to consider where all are & find common entry points for all to test the UDL waters
#udlchat
A1: I was going to go down the typical route/saying, but we could go with assuming that there will be and are always going to be barriers which is why we HAVE to use the framework when designing any environment. #udlchat
A1 they can be a detriment—assuming we already do UDL, or do it “well enough.” Assuming the effort to make a lesson more accessible isn’t worth the payoff. Can also be good—assuming we still have room to grow. It’s all about the mindset. #UDLchat
Hi Kathy from WI. Lots of ahas today, all about language to access, strengthen, and express learning. A1: assumptions are everything and can be very easiely perceived by others. A good assumption? That learners will have variable needs, so plan on them for the start. #UDLchat
A1. Sometimes the assumptions we have create barriers to UDL - those that come to mind include "I too set in my ways to do UDL", "It takes to long.", "I have too much content to cover." There's no need to do it all. Start small and the benefits will be revealled. #udlchat
A1: Within the core of #UDL...we must embrace the assumption that learners are part of the natural variability in any given population...no need to label! Provide a sense of belonging--build community for each and for all! #UDLchat
#udlchat A1: Assumptions can lead to negativity or positivity. Assuming UDL is overwhelming...hinders. Assuming UDL is beneficial...progress and growth.
A1: I think the only assumptions we should have are that students are able to do more than we expect given the they have the right opportunity, scaffolds, and attitude. #udlchat#ellchat
Q2: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement and WHY? “UDL is NOT one more thing—it is thee thing that anchors, blends, and naturally allows every learner to experience an education of freedom.” #UDLchat
Q2: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement and WHY? “UDL is NOT one more thing—it is thee thing that anchors, blends, and naturally allows every learner to experience an education of freedom.” #UDLchat
A2: I completely agree. UDL is THE thing from which all of the other good things can flourish. Without a solid foundation, which is UDL, the rest can be weak/ineffective. #udlchat
A2 I definitely agree with the statement. UDL is a mindset through which all other strategies, theories, activities, assessments, and classroom practices can be observed and implemented. To me, it isn’t something you do, it’s a way of doing something. #UDLchat
A2: Agree!! UDL is not one more thing! It is the glue that binds powerful planning, intentional flexibility and feedback that supports growth! #UDLchat
A2: I agree, but there's a lot of depth in that quote and some guidance would be required for those new to the framework or for those who haven't achieved the aligned mindset yet. #udlchat
A1: Plain and simple...all learners belong...and this must be demonstrated beyond the physical space of the classroom to a true sense of "belonging" #udlchat
A2. UDL minimizes barriers by creating pathways and connections. Instead of a gatekeeper mentality, there is more of a spirit of empowerment that says, "Hey, we're glad you are here!" over and over again. #UDLchat
When I think about assumptions, I think about barriers. You don't know what you don't know. We have to create environments that allow meaningful time for collaboration to dig deep into instructional issues so we eliminate the barriers that come from assumptions. #udlchat
#udlchat A2: Agree!!!! The "assumption" from some is that UDL is just another thing (strategy, buzz word) but the reality is that UDL makes learning accessible for all!! (And more fun for teaching! Love the lightbulbs!!💡)
Q2: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement and WHY? “UDL is NOT one more thing—it is thee thing that anchors, blends, and naturally allows every learner to experience an education of freedom.” #UDLchat
A2. I like to think of UDL as a learning a second language. As first you translate and it can feel like "another thing". Then, you start to become fluent and begin to automatically think in UDL language. That's when is moves from another thing to just being. #udlchat
Poppin’ in late but I’m Helen from NYC and my a-ha moment from today was a moment with my math coach - she taught me a new “facilitation move” that I tried out and it went well! I can now see all the different ways I’ll use it in the future. #udlchat
Q3: Get ready to Argue! What would you say to a colleague who says: “I am already doing UDL—and—what I am doing has worked for years—and it’s still working.” #UDLchat
LOVE their work and them as people (I'm a Beach Center grad :) ). I used it in a workshop earlier this year to demonstrate UDL alignment with self-determination. Good stuff!!! #udlchat
When I think about assumptions, I think about barriers. You don't know what you don't know. We have to create environments that allow meaningful time for collaboration to dig deep into instructional issues so we eliminate the barriers that come from assumptions. #udlchat
A2: I agree; especially as access and eliminating barriers are considered and in light of developingexpert learners. I feel like the UDL framework sums up the true goal of education which often gets lost in the culture of high stakes assessment and performance. #udlchat
A3: You are likely doing a lot of things that would be considered UDL! Let's try to determine how the #intentionality of each mechanism of UDL helps to proactively plan for the variability among all Ls #udlchat
A1: I think assumptions can be a barrier for educators implementing UDL - it was for me in the past for sure! I assumed it was “just another thing” and then when I began to a deeper dive, I was able to break down some of my own previous ideas and shape new ones. #udlchat
Fantastic! I’m just looking at it for the first time but I love the structured framework for student empowerment and engagement, executive functioning, and authentic problem solving. #UDLChat

A3 I might ask what they mean by “it has worked for years.” What does “working” look like? There are no Ss that have trouble understanding content? No Ss could grow beyond your lessons’ goals? #UDLchat
A3: I ask for data. How do you know what's working? If there's no data backing claims (only assumptions), then the reality is we're at best reaching a small fraction of our students. #udlchat
Q3: Get ready to Argue! What would you say to a colleague who says: “I am already doing UDL—and—what I am doing has worked for years—and it’s still working.” #UDLchat
We are really paving a path of clarity with this discussion tonight--the archive will definitely inspire action steps--WOW! #UDLchat
The final Q for tonight will calm the conversation as we think about aspirations...stay tuned!
A2 As the lead learners of my organization, it was really important for our staff to hear, ”you are the experts and we want to empower your instructions design to meet our learner variability.” UDL is a framework that empowers educators to design for ALL of our learners. #udlchat
Q2: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement and WHY? “UDL is NOT one more thing—it is thee thing that anchors, blends, and naturally allows every learner to experience an education of freedom.” #UDLchat
A1: Within the core of #UDL...we must embrace the assumption that learners are part of the natural variability in any given population...no need to label! Provide a sense of belonging--build community for each and for all! #UDLchat
A3: Tell me about it! What are you doing? Is every student becoming an expert learner? Help me see your intentional planning. And by the way, we don't "do" UDL! #UDLchat
Q3: Get ready to Argue! What would you say to a colleague who says: “I am already doing UDL—and—what I am doing has worked for years—and it’s still working.” #UDLchat
A3: In the words of the great @KatieNovakUDL “that’s adorable!” Then I’d ask them to share their lesson with me that met the needs of ALL their learners...I’m still waiting #UDLchat
A3: I said similar things when I first began my UDL journey, but my classroom has blossomed over the last few years as I really embraced the framework. #UDLchat
A3: Joining in late...but I think I would start my response with "Tell me more about that." Teachers need to feel safe and heard and liked before we can get anywhere with UDL. #udlchat
Q3: Grace Hopper said, "The most dangerous phrase in the language is, “We’ve always done it this way.” There is no room in UDL to stop learning. #UDLchat#evolve
I like this :) Sometimes feels like there are too many languages & acronyms in the Ed world, but hopefully UDL can become the translator or at least filter for all to flow through! #UDLChat
A3: 1. That's awesome! I'd love to hear from your students about what you're doing to help them become expert learners! 2. What does "working" mean to you? How do your students experience "it's working"? #udlchat
#udlchat A3 Some teachers might resist, but I think most teachers say thank you for the tool of UDL, for the hope it gives, for the possibility that all of these years I have watched students drown in learning, watched suffering in school, might be ending...
A3: “Please say more. What are some examples of ways your learners are empowered to set goals, choose strategies, self assess, and reflect? In the spirit of continuous improvement, let’s look at the framework and pick an area you might explore further.” #UDLchat
A4 understand my own biases (racial, gender, ability, and more) so I can look for ways to remove barriers I am sure I am erecting for my students due to my relative position of privilege. #UDLchat
A3: This one’s tough- maybe something along the lines of... let’s do some co-observations! I know there are things I can learn from you since you’ve been thinking about supporting all learners for a long time. We could reflect together and think about next steps. #udlchat
Thank you to everyone who participated tonight! This will be quite an archive! Next Question as we conclude...is for you to think about...what will you DO tomorrow based on something said here at #UDLchat tonight--see you next time!
A4: To use my new platform to spread #UDL FAR and WIDE which means I'm using the framework to design each and every podcast. #udlchat#newlearning#learningcurve
A4: Continue to stay connected to UDL learning including through my colleagues, listening to my teachers discuss their planning and instruction w/UDL in mind, continue to dialogue about connections between the UDL framework & other new learning...so much exciting work! #udlchat
And that's a wrap for another amazing #UDLchat! Thank you so much to @ElizabethLStein for introducing us to the 4As protocol and leading tonight's journey. Join @BGentilleGreen on November 7th for our next fast-paced chat full of #UDL love. ❤️ [GIF: person signing "Thank you!"]

A3: "Great! Show me the money!" Ha! No...honestly, I would ask them to demonstrate so I can learn and we could collaborate. Possible teaching (or if they ARE UDL-ing... learning) moment!
Next #UDLchat will be 11/7 at 9:00 ET and every 1st and 3rd Weds each month...and as you know...keep our #UDLchat hashtag lit up with your inspiring thoughts 24/7!
A4: I also aspire to demonstrate and model the practices of UDL in my own PD planning and facilitation and keep learning goals, clear, explicit and linked. #udlchat
A4: I aspire to be more reflective of my actions and words as I am in the thick of teaching. I want to be cognizant of when I add a barrier or take one away. #UDLchat
A4: I want to invite the forgotten and marginalized in urban education to the banquet table of learning they deserve. With #UDL I want to be a catalyst to their dreams, a coach that teaches them how to jump hurdles, and turn them into stepping stones! #UDLchat
A4: Continuing to improve my design approaches to reaching, teaching, and guiding. Following the lead as much as I can from folks like @min_d_j@eyeonaxs@RhianonElan to help me stay on point with #a11y#udlchat
A4: I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how #UDL can be used to break down barriers that people in positions of privledge have put up. How can we use this framework to create TRULY accessible education for all? #udlchat
A4: Allow for mistakes to serve as points for learning & growth, celebrate the changing of "UGH!" to "ah-ha!" moments, Promote assessment as a checkpoint, not an endpoint, & create a culture of expert learning where we are all learning from & with each other. #sblchat#UDLChat
