#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Hello #FLedchat ... who else is feeling a little spontaneous? I am Dennis ... I teach SS/Tech in the Green Dragon Classroom at a STEAM school in Florida

Hey, hey #FLedChat! I'm Michelle, Media Specialist from Daytona Beach. Last spontaneous thing I did was stop and shop at The Avenues in Jacksonville on my way home from #EdCampBranford.

A1. I haven't had the opportunity to teach my own classroom yet, but I praise any teacher that can teach a lesson that's not planned. I don't know if I can remember my teachers every winging anything. If they did, they were really good at going with the flow. #FledChat
A1: Pretty much every 5th period this year. My AP CSP and JavaScript students have a way of making all my plans better. They also love to code AND have fun. #FLedChat
A2: I think PBL lends itself to spontaneity. Having students actually do and make things, leads to times when things go wrong, opportunities to change things up, experiment, etc. #FLedChat
I used to teach preschool and we would play this game where the kids would shout animals and then we would sing about them and act like the animal that they came up with
#FLedChat
Yes, so funny how the smallest things can make students so excited. We were installing an IPEVO whiteboard yesterday, and when the Ss came in and saw wires hanging down, they freaked out. #FLedChat
A2. Let kids create. It's messy and may not completely address a specific standard, but it can make the difference for many kids. Referring to the one in my previous tweet. #FLedChat
A2, I think some ways to encourage spontaneity is by opening the class with an open discussion on anything. I remember my history teacher would do this with current news. I really enjoyed this because it taught me about world issues and how it relates to history.
#fledchat With 2nd grade it was easy... I would let them tell me how they thought we should proceed when starting something new and then really listen to them.

Hi #FLedChat! I hope to see you all @EdCampDuval on Saturday! I'm sorry I'm on the road. I LOVE tonight's topic and will browse it later. Here is an article you might like on How to Plan for Spontaneity! https://t.co/kAaVQ4sT26

A3: I listen to the students. I try to pick up on what they're discussing. Then when they don't think I'm paying attention, I spring it back on them. #FLedChat

A3. I think a great tool to plan spontaneity is creating a file through GoogleDocs. This file can be filled with a variety of different activities based on different subjects and ideas. #FLEdChat
The problem with education is that we are required to plan everything in advance that being spontaneous has been planned out of the curriculum. #fledchat
#fledchat This is going to sound contradictory but I do believe that sometimes you can make spontaneous happen... You just have to have the right tools and a very open mind!
If education ever embraced the theory of spontaneity in the classroom they would some how ruin it by planning a PD a year in advance to show everyone how they are expected to incorporate spontaneous teaching. #fledchat
Maybe having a plan in place for when something spontanous happens, so it isn't seen as a negative. Like when experiments go wrong have a Bloopers wall. #FLedChat

example of spontaneity in the classroom ... surprising kids by picking their name by mixing up the sticks ... surprise you get to answer the question. #fledchat
A3b: Sometimes its a WIN. Sometimes it leads to an even better conversation than I expected. Sometimes those times make us all look amazing. Sometimes it doesn't. #FLedChat
Q3b: Just spontaneously thought of a Blooper's wall, but I'm sure there are many who already do this. As the Aunt of a perfectionist, I would love elementary teachers to have this and help students learn that it's okay to make mistakes. #FLedChat
A3b: I always try to have something in the back of my mind that I can pull out to redirect us. But, sometimes I just let it flop and then we talk about why it didn't work. #FLedChat
Q3b: You re-evaluate and try something else! One time the kids were going crazy in the hallway where the bathroom was so my co-teacher and I banged on the walls and pretended it was a dragon, but then the kids started banging on the walls!

teaching is about the adventure ... somedays you hit the game winning grand slam and somedays you strike out, but that doesn't mean we stop playing or stop swinging for the fences #fledchat

A4: Reassure them that we will be back on track soon. Encourage them to embrace the hiccup and try to go with the flow. Life isn't planned and small changes can be easier to handle with support. #FLedChat
You can try to balance the use of spontaneity and routine, as well as hopefully pushing them out of their comfort zone a small amount at a time #FLedchat
A4: I think they would take comfort in something like a Blooper's wall or some type of format or graphic organizer for spontaneous questions or research. There would still be some structure, but also allowing for spontaneity. #FLedChat
A5: When my students start coding, I never truly know what they will come up with. Sometimes it is kind of plain, other times it blows my mind at how far out it is. #FLedChat
