Sounds like a Bieber song! hahaha

Grandmas & games, right? That's the stuff.
Hey friends! Stacey from NJ. My fave game growing up was Monopoly. Love playing w my boys.
Shauna in Toronto (tweeting from a meeting) - I loved some hippie cooperative farm board games as a kid
Candyland was also a fav when I was young. I remember the box and cards being well-loved.
I have a lot of skill based reading board games the kids love them
Fav game was and still is monopoly.
A1. I like Scoot for review. I have, Who Has is also good.
Scrabble and Battleship are probably my top 2!
A1: Jeopardy or Taboo format
Hi ! Leslie in Mty, MX. Scrabble, Uno, Life, Clue, Monopoly, Mousetrap, Operation, Memory, Euchre, Go Fish...
A1: UNO for nearly every country we learn about to practice counting to 10 in each of the languages we learn.French, now Arabic
A1 I have a game called Read By the Book that works with most kids' books.
I forgot about Battleship! I wasn't very good. LOL
A1: have a slew of board games from Lakeshore. Kids love them esp vowel digraphs game called "Keeper of the Castle".
At a mtg too. Hope I don't get too wrapped up in the chat!
What were they called? Sounds intriguing!
Mousetrap! And Euchre, are you from the upper Midwest?
Hey Quinn Salt Lake City, middle school social studies blah blah. Just got home.
A1: have done a "Pictionary" format with vocab review
Battleship was a great game! I have a similar game for sight words.
I do a game definitions on the kids backs, class list in hand who has what word kids love it and they move
Also Taboo, Pictionary, and Balderdash. How could I forget these ones?
A1: Memory when I was a speech therapist.
A1: Now that I pasted what someone needs to see in the right box, we get back to learning
Ontario. Close enough! heh
A1: Blurt when I was a speech therapist.
Who Has is fun. I forgot about that. Need to find those cards! Thx.
Thanks for the shout out, happy to be here!
I used to drive there in college for doughnuts at Tim Horton's. What city?
I ended up loving those. Came out after I was a little kid, but still played. Scattergories too. https://t.co/yzDYXxOXv2
Also Taboo, Pictionary, and Balderdash. How could I forget these ones?
A1: Tbh, Common Core is huge improvement, but since each state wants to invent its own hoops, I jump only when necessary
Love Scattergories! I forgot about that one!
As a kid, I was a "toy tester". We got to try many different games and toys. Including a scent matching board game.
Forgot about Mousetrap. I also liked Kerplunk. Not a board game but fun.
A1- I like Scribblish as a fun writing/drawing game-Cranium. But my favorite thing is have Ss create games that target skill.
It's a great one for some brain stretching, to be sure. :)
Hey there folks! Derek, G5 teacher from in Southern Utah. I loved Clue, Candyland, & Risk, even w/ all the fights!
I love heads up for vocab my kids always want to play when we have inside recess
If it's sold in the same aisle, close enough!
oh man. I wish I remember!
A1: years ago...jeopardy for review & scavenger hunts
WHAT?? A toy tester. So jealous. Why did you get that privilege?
To be fair, isn't Risk ALL ABOUT the fights??
Why is it that I can never seem to make this chat on time.
love to use dice for math so many possibilities
. hello to you and the Gang! This is Sean from NC just making a brief cameo. For me, it's Connect 4 for logic.
What is it, 5PM there? I never would, either!
Sean!!!! We're at two Seans tonight, folks!
Dice are everything to me.
Quite a few different ones. London?
True story, except I've seen some whoppers of fights all because Risk! My in-laws won't even play it anymore.
I used to play Rummy and Pinochle. Miss them both. No one plays cards anymore.
Love Kerplunk! And Battleship!
Two Seans for ! We just took this chat to 11! Cue "Stonehenge!"
A2. Have them bring in their own & teach those who don't know how to play.
I spent the weekend there once. I used to like driving to Point Pelee, too.
A2 Board games need to start w an equal playing field, no matter where Ss are at in curriculum, let them advance together.
Yeah, it's 5pm for us Mountain time folks. But seems to make it. I'll be better.
A2:Ss create own, they can rotate through games
my mom signed us up! Canadian Toy Testers, we were. We had to write reports at the end of two weeks of testing.
Hi . I teach elem Spanish in MIA Nothing beats Twister for practicing colors, parts of the body, & right/left in any language!
A2 Team Scrabble with multiple boards going in the room. Or for math stations, different games where all Ss rotate through
What a cool gig to get as a kid
Hope its ok - Velia jumping in A2 I have staff run whole class math games! Ss love playing!
- does all the cool things!
A1.2 just played connect4, operation, uno, battleship, rummy, sorry, trouble with son&his friend
What is it good for? Absolutely nothin, say it again. I also liked Slapjack.
Risk, Pandemic, Settlers of Catan (and Seafarers and Cities and Knights) are all great, though take too long for one period.
Not just ok, preferred! Welcome!
I like to have Ss teach a game to the class and we play with the projector them against me its chaos but they love it
I don't have the patience for Monopoly. Unless it's the Debit Card version, count me out! Too much time.
Dont forget Pit. Great for meeting those econ commodities markets standards
Wouldn't like writing the reports back then, but playing...
A2 - create teams (assign points and recognize winners somehow), give choices, let Ss work together to change rules/own it!
My kids LOVE Candyland which means I play it rather frequently still. Lots of fun!
Debit card version? Unfamiliar...
A2: Jeopardy the entire class can play
A2 I like to pilot the game in front of the class, then have kids break into small groups to play.
A1: Review Jeopardy, , Floristic Relay Game, natural selection online game, build a protein.
To increase a love of math,, more staff are looking towards playing games in class
A2) Give Ss the opp to hack board games and create their own. Plan + design the board, write the rules.
A2: assign teams or group Ss
Yeah, it's one of the newer versions where you have a debit card instead of cash. Lots faster. Check it out.
To the benefit of everyone!
Never heard of that one. Perhaps someone in socials plays it. Seems out of place in biology.
bingo still gets the kids every time I have multiplication , fraction , telling time
A2: small groups is always good choice
You're getting ahead in the question list, Jacie! <--One of the gifted students!
hangman gets all involved also I love it
That makes the most sense. There are always Ss left out when the whole class is involved. Hate to see that.
Hmmm........next Genius Hour project? :)
im@a and LOVED writing reports.
A2: Floristic Relay Game = 4 table groups of 6 Ss each. Kahoot and Jeopardy are whole class. Natural selection is individuals.
Absolutely -- circulating through groups you also see more of how kids are doing, having fun w each
A1. I took an old CandyLand game and glued on Sight words. My Ss love it.
A2: Used to play BINGO as speech therapist/reading w/ younger students
My kids really love Apples to Apples.
My latest bookclub projects were to create games - 1 rule: must use student created questions! FUN https://t.co/bWPN1WB45r
A1b) Forgot about Tragedy of the Commons fishing game with M&Ms.
Sorry! Thought it was a great way to include the whole class. Didn't look ahead for Qs. 😀
No 'pologizing here! I dig it when someone's thinking like I did!
A2: Remove the rules from he game prior to handing it out
A1 I've been known to use Jeopardy, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, & for reviews in my class. Ss love it!
That's a good idea. Never thought of doing that. Did you feel guilty for desecrating Candyland?
I am convinced!!! Do you remember your fav game that never made it?
A3 I award dice roll based points to remind Ss that life isn't fair. It takes a while, but they tend to get less competetive.
A3. Teacher chooses the teams? That way they are fairly evenly matched. Also, teach sportsmanship. Kids are missing that.
A3: turn them into teaching opportunities with Ss as the teacher
I also found a great game called BrainQuest. A facts-based game in all the subjects, Lots of fun!
https://t.co/rFjfWtbPT7
Such an important social skill!
A3: Ss created review game & Ss wk together & awarded pts if they can beat the Ts or stump the Ts
A3 I find that Ss who know how 2 play more than happy to teach & help others. So many Ss don't know traditional board games!
A3: Discuss diverse play styles. We dont all play in same way.
A3 I always want to avoid the "Everyone gets a medal," but I also want to build everyone up.
A3: have a tendency 2 root 4 underdog & make it a pt to do so. Therefore, I find others end up cheering, encouraging he/she on.
When my kids would play me--and sometimes lose--I taught them to say "Rematch!"
LOVE playing against the Ss. So fun.
The more dramatically, the better! ReMATCH!
That's so true. Having a monthly game day so they can bring their games in would be a good idea.
Loved using these as 5 minute fillers, or when we were waiting in line somewhere.
They love to teach and learn from one another.
A3. This is toughsince the whole initiative behind things like was to encourage authentic play/natural interaction
Don't forget to tag your tweets so everyone can see. :) https://t.co/HEhgX7eFAe
I like that, chance is unbiased and a good chance to teach going with the flow
I brought it back to life https://t.co/f0cvg34uZv
That's a good idea. Never thought of doing that. Did you feel guilty for desecrating Candyland?
They probably have a digital version or App by now. I need to check. I loved it as a student.
David. ITRT from VA hopping in.
You made it a Frankengame!
A3: I include reward cards in the games, that can be handed out to Ss that are showing good sportsmanship.
A2 You could have a Board Game rotation where they are constantly moving from 1 game to another. Kind of winner takes all.
A3: In we choose name themes+ID number. No one knows who is winning, except winner.
A2: Create a custom made class Guess Who? Take photos of Ss wearing hats, glasses, scarfs etc. & replace game pics😆
A3: Encourage leaderboards where you can't lose points/XP/etc. Friendly competition makes us better (teachers too)
I hadn't thought of that! Awesome!
I can't wait for next yr's
A3. Before we start a game we talk about how to end the game. Kids choose. High5/ special hand shake.
A3:Chinese schools have a great model. Their games feature cooperation/collaboration in lieu of competition.
How do you keep kids from yelling out thr names? Even the "losers" seem to out themselves in my class.
Great activity for the start of the year/getting to know you fun! https://t.co/l7Gm9x00eO
A2: Create a custom made class Guess Who? Take photos of Ss wearing hats, glasses, scarfs etc. & replace game pics😆
*GASP* I love this! https://t.co/ZTbqnpzVfY
A2: Create a custom made class Guess Who? Take photos of Ss wearing hats, glasses, scarfs etc. & replace game pics😆
4 facts and a fib is a great ice-breaker.
A3 One way to keep it calm is by not keeping score. I've done that many times & it totally helps!
WHat? Aren't they the country who dominates & control?
OHHHHHHH, or life size could be fun against staff members and kids at an assembly!!!!
I have successfully dodged this bullet with Grades 10-12. Is it an age thing?
So many creative ways to use this. Could even go w world lang to practice vocab.
That's a good idea! I always tell Ss abt game karma, so you better beware.
My wife did it w/ our church youth group & they LOVED it! Had Candyland as the "Top" game.
Yeah, 3rd graders can be goofuses sometimes... :)
A3 You know, I make it a point to not be involved. Let Ss solve whatever issues may arise. From set-up, to rules, etc.
A4a Using science content words in a Taboo format, or like the $100,000 Pyramid
Q4 Clue with book characters we are reading and clues are the traits
Trivial Pursuit American History edition? Scattergories with Science?
It's not necessarily bad, but you could try playing "Secret Superhero" next time, see if it helps.
Love this idea! My boys and I love that game!
Hi sorry I'm late. Couldn't find my pencil. I'll try to catch up.
A3 It all depends on making sure there is a sense of class unity PRIOR to any games. If respect exists then you're ok.
A4: ELA: almost anything, Easy: Taboo, Pictionary, Checkers, Yahtzee, UNO
I taught in China for a year and the students loved games at the end of lessons or week to review concepts
Great question and project for Ss.
It's okay to be OhSoLate at the - just glad to have you!
A4 My Ss like doing Jeopardy based on the last 4/5 stories for review.
I've also been known to add or subtract points for sportsmanship a-la Dumbledore in Harry Potter!
A3b) Example of the time they were their favorite type of tree + ID#. We need to learn about trees! https://t.co/ejEwdtVDEn
we have a super collaborative school and games are a big part of all classes so it helps with the competition thing
We will have lots of new staff members next year. This would be great fun with staff!
Are we going to be co-nerds in another area? Pens and Potter?
A4. My Ss like . They can take and create quizzes.
There's always a definite winner, but they need to be good sports about winning & losing!
That , he's so witty!! High five for being awesome, buddy! :) https://t.co/HArlHQarif
It's okay to be OhSoLate at the - just glad to have you!
A4: Ss created charades w/clues relating to content topic
A4b Might not be a hack, but Risk seems perfect for Social Studies & Geography
There's always a definite winner, but they need to be good sports about winning & losing! https://t.co/VEJrX3WrPO
A3 I always want to avoid the "Everyone gets a medal," but I also want to build everyone up.
A4) Use traditional games: Life, Monopoly, Risk, Yahtzee + trade random components to create new game. https://t.co/Mtb3v0tp2w
A4b: Ss in poverty have placed a unique spin on the game "Life" by incorporating environmental factors, and race relations. 💡🎓
is now trending in USA, ranking 44
I'm down w/ that! I am a pretty big Potter fan, although I prob need to reread them soon. It's been a while.
This reminds me of the kids I taught in Detroit. I learned so much about life from them.
I am a HUGE fan! Super excited for "book" 8.
A4b I've had kids hack Life and turn it into an Oregon Trail game. Have to limit the # of snake bites!
Q4. Great 2 see Ss take a well known game and come up with a new way 2play. During I had the funniest versions of mancala
One of my kids said last week during play time, "Hey you guys, let's do a Kahoot on Stars and Space!"
Be inclusive. Be engaging. Give all Ss a voice w/
A4: Discuss how he rules present in the game make it fun 2 play. Card games (apples 2 apples) could be easily hackable
Tried hacking games with Ts at an inservice, too. Built teamwork, creativity and a mindset.
My meeting is over! I can be a bit more present for the second part of
Ohhh! Love this game. Great idea!!
Yeah, but does it really count as Potter number 8? I'm kinda on the fence. I'll totally read it tho.
definitely need more Twister in high school
A5 We play One Night Ultimate Werewolf by during play time. Good for questioning skills!
But I tell my Ss they can only reread books once a year. Otherwise some would never change books!
A5: Chess, amazing to watch them teach each other, help each other, etc. True collaboration.
Glad to have you in my PLN!
I'm not sure what's going on here.
Hello everyone! Tom from Richmond, VA. Looks like an interesting topic!
That could get problematic, tho, right?
JENGA!I love it & it's a great way 2 foster patience!Sure it could be made educational by writing on it https://t.co/YWiYhd6pce

A5: UNO, great for building rapport through conversation
Student generated for their on .

A1:Super popular clsrm game is always "4 corners" -post an evocative statement and Ss have to go to corner of what they believe
A4 Mashing up games to fit with subject areas would be a great maker space! Would love my Ss to make some for our media center.
A5 I think any game that boosts team spirit, collaboration, and sportmanship is a win!
We have a couple Ts use Jenga for math and reading. Kids love it! I just love it for the loud crash!
A2: Use dice, each number matches with a question - everyone can play!
A5 Scrabble! Divide class into groups and have 5 games going, then have winners compete against each other. Love Scrabble!
I love this one, it's good for next week's movement chat, too!
Jenga is a great one they really get behind each other so it down not fall
I have a wooden puzzle (named Robo-Bob) that is very similar.
Now I feel somewhat disconcerted during a Twitter chat and it's not because of a disagreement for once! heh
Q4 I always liked using Jeapordy and Memory on the front board, sticky tack to stick up cards, and post-its for questions
A2: Students create their own board games based on content, literature and prototype them for their peers
A4b I've had Ss want to recreate the Monopoly board as well as the Clue board with our school as the board. Lots of fun there!
A3: Strategically, take away competition. Get rid of score keeping, points, leader boards!
my kids love the charades app it's so funny watching them!
I want the GIANT version, but scared it will fall on a Ss and crush them (not literally...) https://t.co/OyNRHHg0Ky
We have a couple Ts use Jenga for math and reading. Kids love it! I just love it for the loud crash!
A5) Hard to pick a "non edu" game. Don't all games bring value to student learning?? Turn-taking, strategy, communication.
I want to set aside a table for the school working of a large (# of pieces) jigsaw puzzle. Anyone can help build it.
I am so bad at this chat. I tend to get so far behind b/c I go off on too many tangents.

YES! These are the wooden puzzles I mean!
Jenga is great in Science class to when teaching balance.

A6 just ask the students - they'll figure it out. Have them bring in old games and hack them in groups
A6 w history, student-created board games could assess large movements - civil rights, revolutions, etc. (1/2)
Caught kids playing Poker one time. They were supposed to be practicing math facts with the deck of cards! Haha!
Too often we are using points as a commodity and playing banker, not teacher
Nope! I'll stick to grown up coloring, and meditation.
Wait, doesn't that count as teaching a "life skill"?
A6 S groups design games on a facet of the larger movement. Latino civil rights movement one game, Afr Amer another, AIM...
My own teenager loves Catan! Great game!
Superheroes -> Superman;1234. The ; and S ID # permits you to import the scores if desired.

Favorite flower --> Daisy;1234 and Rose;1235 played today, among others.
I totally need a bin of "fidget toys" but for ME!
I've never even heard of these -- I may need to finagle my way into some.
It really helps to chill out some of the more fidgety Ss, they go for them immediately. They are always available.
which would be a step up for some classrooms.
I agree,Ss form groups and work on their custom board throughout the term, when finished kept as game for class
I have wiggly legs instead.
waiting for mrs. Munkyboy... In for a m
They are super cool. You "paint" w/ water & it then disappears. Very Zen & calming.

: Jedi Kermit the Board Game! I would buy it, and they're both Disney now...
when I do various themes, I'd love to create games within them...
Whoever thought of the quiet game was a genius.😜
Oh man, don't even. Now, I totally have to make that!
Wow, that looks killer hard! All the pieces are the same color. Pretty cool!
The Unwanteds game I can make an imaginary world to save lost kids.. If you have not read The Unwanteds read it!
Seriously!! Can't wait to try out the new . Already love the one I have now! https://t.co/iIBQ9GdPag
This chat tonight, BTW, is perfect for toy & game companies. Send us your toys, friends!
I'm a third generation leg wiggler. At least.
A6: Bringing some diversity to 'historical' games would be a worthwhile remix
How cool would it be to have this site get kids to be game
my 11s & I created, but the 10s may get to play it soon!
Game that has you evaluate online info called "you're kinda sketchy but you're talking about my topic & I want to cite you"
But only if the game cards actually talk! So great!
I've been thinking of Magic Pants, the Game. What would it be? (hugging for points?)
