Hi #tlap!! Annick, Gr 1/2 T from Winnipeg. My day... ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ซ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ฆโ๐ฆ+๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ด๐ฑ no emoji exists for my big family ๐
A1: Love discussing student-centered instruction with our Ts. So many #yorkdukes Ts are shifting to student-centered classrooms and love talking shop about experiences. Also, our adventure into our first Entrepreneurship class for 8th graders #TLAP ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
A1 I am all about transforming learning to put the student first. To teach with heart, kindness and focus on changing the world. Igniting passion, fun and kindness fuel my drive daily. Kids deserve the very best. All the love in the world. ๐ <3 #tlap
A1 The best that comes into mind is anything along the lines of IMPACTING LIVES. Goes to that one-on-one interaction that is VERY important and helps tons of Ss to believe in themselves. #tlap
Welcome, Jay! I love that discussion of making schools different! Such a long and detailed discussion but a productive one if talking about possibilities #tlap
a1: SO many soap boxes - using averages for grades, comments of ".. needs to try harder" are my two big ones!
#gamification also fires me up for the positive emotions! :)
#tlap
A1: Good fired up? Or upset fired up? Good=learning new strategies to help my Ss, all things tech, and sports (sorry, coach here). Upset fired up=homework, no retakes policies, Ts who don't like Ss. #tlap
A1: Equal opportunities for ALL students. Each student should have the same opportunities as other students! Also, technology- let's get technology in schools! in ALL schools! #FindaWay#tlap
A1 I am all about transforming learning to put the student first. To teach with heart, kindness and focus on changing the world. Igniting passion, fun and kindness fuel my drive daily. Kids deserve the very best. All the love in the world. ๐ <3 #tlap
A1 - On a more positive note...the evidence to support learning strategies in the classroom...retrieval practice, spaced practice, elaboration, dual coding, interleaving, etc. #tlap
A1 Change! I get fired up over helping teachers see the benefits of new practices, ideas, etc. I love seeing a โbut this is the way weโve always done itโ teacher try something new!! #tlap
A1: I love talking about transforming school culture, thinking outside the box, and developing a group thatโs all in for kids. We have had a transformational year! #tlap
A1 I'm not sure 280 char enough ;) homework is one and also talk about how Ss can or cannot do something, vs. good fired up, putting Ss in the lead #tlap
A1 I get ๐ฅup when talking about building relationships with kids. ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ Itโs roots before fruits in my classroom ๐ฑ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐#TLAP#180daysofawesome
OOOHHH Homework fires me up to! All about transforming learning. Change what homework is but build partnership with parents. Include kindness, communication, bonding and fun. Love Dave's take on this. Shout it from the mountains. https://t.co/WDxosEhOds#tlap
A1: Moving students from tech consumers to tech creators!
A1 ooooo here's a good one Ive felt passionate about ever since I started learning here, getting RID OF DESK ROWS! Its all about collaboration and interacting to build relationships!!!!!! #tlap
A1: โค๏ธ the approach of helping students discover their own learning! Facilitating rather than dictating. . . Self-discovery helps the learning stick! ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ง #tlap
A1. Teacher development and retention for our most at-risk students. Our most at-risk students often are subjected to consistent teacher turnover.. how can we give our most at-risk students the best teachers? #tlap
A1 Making Education tailored for our learners future not our future. We continue teaching students the things we needed to know which will be no longer needed when our students get to the work place. #tlap
A1: Homework! The debate continues each year! Every year I get several parents that ask about 4 weeks in "why aren't they bringing home, homework?" Well they are just not like you are used to! Make it interesting for kids #TLAP
A1: Homework is a huge hot topic - my views have completely shifted from when I became an educator 20+ years ago (and became a parent of school-aged kids!) #tlap
A1: Homework. Return on Investment: with the amount of work educators do in order to assign it, grade it, and track it down when missing, are we seeing the academic growth that we are wanting to see? Is are โinvestmentโ with homework working? #tlap
A1: What are the benefits of nightly homework for second grade students? Why do parents ask for it? The ๐ may never know. I just want my students to be happily and enjoyably reading each and every night. That is my GOAL for them! ๐ฅ #tlap
A1: Collaborations ๐ฅ me up in a positive way!! Weโre on a mission to connect & learn from others! Put yourself out there & find classes ro connect with! #TLAP
A1 I am not a proponent of homework or standardized tests. Students work hard enough at school don't send it home, and they're not just a number. I'm a huge fan of virtual field trips though ๐ฅ #tlap
A1: Homework. Return on Investment: with the amount of work educators do in order to assign it, grade it, and track it down when missing, are we seeing the academic growth that we are wanting to see? Is our โinvestmentโ with homework working? #tlap
A1. I get ๐ฅ up about kids driving their own in their OWN education! Some teachers need to let it go, let it go, of the OLD ways and embrace the KIDS their kids... #flexibleseating#geniushour#STEM@nightzookeeper@fliogrid kids should WANT to come to school!โค๏ธ๐
#tlap
A1 Rethinking ELA to make it more collaborative and creative -- to go along with teh communication and critical thinking. I also want to take a look at common themes through both classical and contemporary literary lenses. #tlap
A1: Love the topic of redos and retakes. It is a critical part of the feedback loop. We should be focusing on student mastery, not just putting a grade in the gradebook. If you have a chance, follow @rickwormeli2 His philosophy is great on this topic. #tlap
A1: What ๐ฅs me up is providing support to ALL Ss, whatever type, no matter what and creating new pathways for success, especially for disadvantaged Ss. #tlap
A1 I get ๐ฅ any time someone questions the power ๐ช of positive ๐ relationships with students. This isnโt 1950. Ss wonโt be their best when we demand that they sit up and shut up. ๐ค #tlap#KidsDesereveIt
A1: Right now Iโd say building relationships. It seems so common sense to me but some people just donโt โget itโ and I donโt get that mindset! #TLAP
A2: I believe the standard because I think most teachers ๐ ๐บ map out the year of when they are going to teach content. I think the creativity to hook and provide experiences follows. #TLAP โ
Q2 Usually the creative idea for me! I'm not in a classroom yet though so this might change, but I feel like it's always important to make lessons fun whether the standard or the idea comes first! #tlap
A1: I believe it is so important to make sure that every student is put on a path to help them to success in their education. Many students learn differently and I believe it is the teachers' responsibility to help each student #tlap
A1 Teaching students the importance of second chances -- known as revising in the writing world -- and that we often produce our best efforts by trying over and over and over again. #tlap
A2: For me, creative ideas ๐ก always come first! Once I have the idea, I can find a way to tie it to the standard to make learning fun and engaging for students! #TLAP ๐คฉ
A2: Standards drive our instruction, BUT sometimes an idea can โก๏ธ a creative thought that can be applied or aligned with the standard! Teaching is not a set formula in stone. It is OKAY and PROBABLE to veer off the plan ๐๐ผ #TLAP
RT @TeacherRunner42: a1: SO many soap boxes - using averages for grades, comments of ".. needs to try harder" are my two big ones!
#gamification also fires me up for the positive emotions! :)
#tlap
A2: Run with the creative idea when it sparks into your head! Donโt underestimate creativity...ever. I have always thought itโs easier to tailor a creative idea to a standard rather than create one from the standard. #my2cents#tlap
A2: Standards usually but would rather it be creative first! But, reality, Standards are where you get WHAT you teach. Creativity is where you get HOW you teach. Even better when they are intertwined effortlessly! #tlap
Alll of the above. I have my own kiddos to consider, neighbors that oppose iPads in school, research pro&con & I teach STEM/robotics so we use iPads every day. #tlap
A2: Standard needs to come first. Must know exactly what to teach, then find ways to make it fun/engaging. โCuteโ ideas first donโt always teach standard to the fullest. #tlap
A1: I dislike hearing negatives when interacting with Ss ๐ค, we should modify our negative speak into a more positive format ๐ - show the respect our kids deserve! #TLAP
A1: the lack of feedback, lack of exemplars and giving 0โs. Where is the learning in either of those? A grade matters very little to students, they ๐ at it and ๐คทโโ๏ธ. Give them feedback and help them set goals! Donโt keep success a secret. #TLAP
A2 Both?! Sometimes I think of something creative and have to consider if/how to teach with it. Other times the standard needs an engaging lesson created around it. #tlap
They take turns coming first for me. I love hearing a great idea and adapting it to meet a standard. I also look at standards and try to think of new ways to teach them. #tlap
A2: It's important to know what your end goal is first. What do you want students to learn and be able to do? Then plan a creative avenue to get them there. Otherwise it can be fluff in the form of a creative idea. #tlap
A2: Hmmm that's tough! Sometimes I've had an idea jump in my brain and figured out how to connect it to the standard! Other days I look at my curriculum map and design my lessons from there! #tlap
A2 Oh the chicken and the egg lol Instead of finding that answer, I would concentrate on making the two integral at all time. Learn & teach standards through fun and creativity. It is always possible. Kids deserve the best. Find the way...FOR THEM. #tlap
A2: I believe it is important to put a creative approach to teaching because students will be interested in the topic and pick up on it. The creative approach encourages students to participate and want to learn #tlap
A2 In sci its the 3D Standards: Disciplinary Core Ideas to see the path; Sci Engineering Practices to use inquiry to know; Cross-cutting Concepts to bind ideas & add coherence #tlap
A2:
Both- when I find new technologies, I make the standards fit. When I have new standards, I search for inspiration by focusing in on Ss passions and strengths.
#TLAP
A2 I often start with the real-world application or creativity -- then figure out what standards it fits, and what changes I need to make so that it covers related standards. #tlap
A2. Standard but creativity is just as important! I want my kids to go home each day and say, WOW ๐ฎ that was an AWESOME, I canโt wait to come back tomorrow! #tlap that would ๐คฏ and warm my โค๏ธ
A2: Ts must have deep knowledge of standards as a requisite to maintaining clarity for Ss when planning and delivering โcreativeโ instruction. #tlap
A2 For me, it seems creative first, but I think b/c knowing the standard and wanting to find more creative ways to help Ss learn and be more engaged with it #tlap
A2 both! Sometimes an amazing idea comes 1st which is linked to standards, sometimes creativity comes from not wanting to teach standards the boring old way #tlap
A2: itโs a little bit of both for me, sometimes I have to get creative to get the ss to understand a concept, and sometimes the creativity comes first and Iโm like whoa! How can I incorporate this! #TLAP
A2: The creative is definitely what pops into my head first. Then the #tlap hook that I can incorporate into the lesson and then which standards will apply. ๐๐ผ #Kindergarten#tlap
A2. I just watched an @MartinEPSeligma lecture about creativity- a broader knowledge base = more creativity. However, creativity also needs personal meaning. What comes first? It really is a chicken-egg situation! ๐คฃ #tlap
Sometimes the creative ideas come first and I can make the standards fit the creative idea.... other times Iโm looking at the standard Iโm teaching and then the creative idea comes... #tlap
A2: The first couple of years I would have answered "standard" but now its the creative idea. If I have an idea I can easily match it to a standard. I do my best thinking with ideas- standards come second for me. #tlap
A2 It could be either way. Sometimes I have a standard that I need a creative idea for and sometimes I come up with a cool idea and then look for standards to incorporate the idea in. #tlap
A2 I also think when it comes to a creative idea, it can happen at ANY PLACE, ANYTIME. I've gotten my โ๏ธ ideas on the road๐ or in ๐ฒ๐๐น #TLAP
EXACTLY! Teaching is about building those relationships with students. Standards, content, etc. are just the tools we use to help them grow into who they are. #tlap
A2. I get that a curriculum map can feel like they stifle your creativity, but it only has the power to do that if you allow it. Think within the box. Stretch the box...reshape the box. Donโt let it condone you. Your choice! #tlap
A2. The standard comes first; however, if we can utilize a creative ideas in demonstrating standards that Ss will be more engaged to learn, I would do this first! #tlap
A2b: Now that I've read the entire question...I know the content, so that technically is first, but not always. Creativity gets the spotlight though. #tlap
A2: It really depends... I make sure my lessons are standards driven but the creative idea may come first & then I find the standards that would work best with it! #TLAP
A2:Standard โก๏ธ what creative idea can I use to make Ss will understand this standard and how to apply it to their lives? What will my students need to know to be successful? How can I get them there? How can I engage them in learning? #tlap
A2:Standards should spark creativity and curiosity. While we should follow standards we should be saying "What can I do with this standard to spark curiosity in my students?" Creativity should "set the standard!" Standards without creativity breed mediocrity. #tlap
A1: It can be frustrating to have a generic curriculum or standards set up for students even though they are all unique @barbersclass#barbersclass#tlap
A2 I always start with the standard or learning target, then start asking the right questions. How can I connect this to my students lifeโs? How can I show them โwhy we have to learn thisโ? How can I make this learning fun and exciting? #tlap
#tlap A2: Standards can be boring, so I come up with creative ideas to have my Ss practice the standard without being frustrated: using rhymes, acting out words or stories, or having debates.
A3: I follow studs on Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest to get ideas. However, many great ideas have come from collaborating with @KimSnodgrass#TLAP ๐๐ก
A2: That is not to say that the other way doesnโt apply. Sometimes itโs about looking at which standards I need to RETEACH and how to teach the creatively. #tlap
A2: either. But the real magic happens when you find something kids are passionate about, like a community problem, come up with a creative idea and tie it to a standard. #TLAP
A3 My biggest treasure is my PLN. They are amazing educators who inspire and motivate me daily. I also channel my inner @ronclarkacademy and @burgessdave; two people have have transformed my learning. I look to my kids to think about what is fun/creative. #tlap
A3 I listen to my Ss Where do they think we should go next? I have them help me create a plan that will help us all learn The more ?s I ask, the more direction Ss give #tlap
Perhaps we should think of this as a recursive process, much like the writing process. Sometimes you start with the standard or message, sometimes you start with the creativity or audience. #tlap
A2: I'd like to think that Ts should explore strategies to have students experience the desired standard by engaging them in the learning process #tlap
A3 #tlap I look to my PLN first and foremost and do this by interacting face to face, by phone or email and of course by using Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest for ideas
A3: When I find an activity/lesson that I can't wait to try out and explore with the Ss then I know that I've found a treasure. Treasure=fun+learning. #tlap
Joining late! A3: my inspiration comes from my younger self: what would I have loved to learn/create when I was in middle school? And then I make it happen! #tlap
A2: The standard provides the canvas. The teacher provides the paint and the brush. The student is the painter creating a masterpiece of learning! ๐ฉโ๐จ๐จโ๐จ#tlap
A2: It can be either. I go with inspiration and passion. If you know your standards inside out, it makes it much easier to get inspired and be creative. A good artist ๐ฉโ๐จ knows his mediums ๐จ . #tlap
A2: My collab convos w/T usually start w/standards ๐ ๐ โ๏ธ but give me a topic and the creative fun begins ๐ ๐๐for planning out the learning experience! โ ๏ธ#tlap
A3 Through the art of ๐, ๐ถ, ๐ซ. This might seem a bit crazy/weird, but also a lot of my ideas comes when I'm talking to myself."THATS IT. I GOT IT"๐ฅ. #TLAP
A3. As a principal, it is to support all creative/great ideas our staff have and figure out a way to make it work.. it is not okay for me to limit ideas due to current restrictions. My role is to find a way around it and do what is best for learning #tlap
A3: In our students is where we find the greatest treasure. They should be the ones driving our planning and preparation. It is their classroom and their school. Let them be the captains of the ship. #tlap
A3: Honestly, sometimes, believe it or not... it comes from my STUDENTS! ๐๐ผ๐โค๏ธ What's better than STUDENT LED projects or innotiativesโ๏ธโ๏ธ #TLAP
A2: It can go either way for me...sometimes the ๐ก comes 1st, sometimes the standard sparks the ๐ก. Important part is that learning is ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ with a bit of ๐คช mixed in! #tlap
A3: I am incredibly โpicture motivatedโ when it comes to my lessons. Pictures from teachers on Twitter (my amazing #PLN ) and Instagram are always creatively inspiring to me. #tlap
#tlap A3 Good Trs teach content Great Trs create new ways that "hook" the kids into learning the same content. When I read my learning Standards my mind thinks of numerous ways to use the verbs in the standard to teach the lesson. #Example... https://t.co/iO5rGwgO3C
A3: No doubt- my tresure comes from YOU--my #PLN! What a great group of people on here and Facebook, and through many of the #EdCamps...it'other teachers that help inspire! #tlap
A3: Colleagues, articles, books, more recently social media, and more than anything the daily feedback from my students๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ. #tlap
A3: My book Instilling Touchstones of Character includes 95 experiential activities, hundreds of quotes & vicarious experiences of stories &, videos to teach desired traits & attributes. #tlap
W/o this great PLN, there wouldnt be no US or creativity! My PLN, or as i like to call it "education family" has helped me think outside the box! #tlap
A3 My biggest treasure is my PLN. They are amazing educators who inspire and motivate me daily. I also channel my inner @ronclarkacademy and @burgessdave; two people have have transformed my learning. I look to my kids to think about what is fun/creative. #tlap
A3 My biggest treasure is my students themselves. It is their interests that inspire my creativity lessons. A unit flopped? Why? What can I do to help these students connect with the next one? #tlap
A3. I like to find out what the Ss are interested in and then design lessons that we can relate to real life experiences! Keep them guessing with curiosity! #tlap
#tlap A3: It comes from my mom who can walk into any thrift store, buy three objects, and make something new. If I want my Ss to be creative or be innovators, then I have to show them how to be that way. Hereโs my classroom and the chairs that I painted.
A3:Twitter and Instagram. The best ideas come from the amazing educators all around me! Everyday I learn something new, everyday I see a creative idea I canโt wait to try in my room! ๐#tlap
I find a lot of my treasure on Pinterest and Twitter. I also get a lot from my professors and cooperating teachers, but my best lessons are those made based on the students after I know them #studentcentered#tlap
Love that everyone in my feed is currently #tlap -ing! Keep up the great work y'all! I'm getting ready for tomorrow's Tech Bytes for Teachers: Personalized Learning Tools and Strategies!
A2: I believe that teachers initially start the year off with standard lessons plans but integrate creative lessons for their students at the beginning of each month- when the lesson draws closer #barbersclass@barbersclass#tlap
A3: I find my treasure ๐กin the middle of rowing, spinning, and running. ๐ฃโโ๏ธ๐ดโโ๏ธ๐ somethings about cardio gets my brain going ๐โโ๏ธ #TLAP
A3 Treasure is EVERYWHERE, but we may need a little creative boost from time to time! Thank you ๐๐ผ, twitter and #PLN for sharing your treasures #tlap
A3: My treasure is found in others! As a T, my โgo toโ sources were colleagues, Google, and Pinterest. Unsurprisingly, as an admin my โgo toโ sources are colleagues, Google, and Pinterest! No need to invent th wheel... Iโm surrounded by genius! #tlap
A3 I find my creativity or my inspiration when I am outside - helps me refocus and the ideas come. Also my students, my Twitter PLN, my family, and my @SMART_Tech#wantallmonsters#tlap
A3: My Twitter PLN is my treasure ๐โค๏ธ๐ An endless supply of ideas ๐กadvice ๐ค and support ๐ for taking risks and trying new things! โ ๏ธ #tlap
A3: No doubt- my tresure comes from YOU--my #PLN! What a great group of people on here and Facebook, and through many of the #EdCamps...it'other teachers that help inspire! #tlap
A3: I like voxer with school thinking partners, bouncing ideas off grade level team and often saying, "is this working for you" to my Ss #tlap@KimSnodgrass
A3: I find my ideas for great treasured filled lessons by tapping into my inter-child. I really focus on reversing the role and seeing through the eyes of my students. I love to have fun in all I do in life (sometimes gets me in trouble) and just bring that mindset everyday #tlap
A2: Standards 1st but learning does NOT need to be standardized. Allow for flexible learning environments. Students can show their learning of standards in many creative ways. #tlap
We really need to be collaborating with our students. Otherwise we're all going to be miserable. It's amazing what can happen when students take ownership over their learning. #tlap
A4: I love recreating the media center into a totally different experience for Ss that gets them excited about reading. This was my favorite so far with @KimSnodgrass#TLAP
In reply to
@KimSnodgrass, @NElovesPS, @burgessdave, @YmsDukes, @KimSnodgrass
Jim Smith from Minnesota jumping in Farmington MI. I have been lurking but this brought me in. Passion, creativity and authentic problem solving leads to engagement and beyond - to kids owning their learning. The priority standards can be taught in many ways. lets engage #tlap
A2: either. But the real magic happens when you find something kids are passionate about, like a community problem, come up with a creative idea and tie it to a standard. #TLAP
Flexible seating is something that I've implemented. It's the first hook for my Ss. Also Ss realize they have a lot of hands on, engaging activities daily.
#TLAP
Before Thanksgiving I transformed my room into the City of Ember and students had to solve clues found in artifacts to 'escape' before the lights went out for good! @KimSnodgrass@burgessdave#tlap
A4: Total pirate-style room transformations are the most "magical" thing Iโve experienced as a teacher! The hype, the anticipation, the excitement ....unmatched! โจ๐ฆโจ#TLAP
A4 I love to use music, dance, fun, humor, mystery and hooks. Having students step out of their comfort zones, myself as well. Look into creativity and creation. Stay away from traditional ways of doing this and change the way we learn. All about the kids! Always! #tlap
A3: People. Students, teachers, parents, community partners. We are surrounded by enthusiastic people who want to help make school relevant for students. #TLAP
We are rewriting curriculum and I asked if they could take the money they planned on spending on textbooks and just pay me to create my own creative lessons. The students would LOVE it! #tlap
A4 Push the desks into random groups, decorate, create diff activ for each group to do, while building relationships, giving me time to interact and learn abt and from Ss #tlap
Melissa from Missouri A1:โ๏ธwhen Ts are passionate about building relationships w/ Ss. Then some backwards thinker tries to stop them because kids should just be quiet and learn! SMH! #TLAP
A4 virtual field trips! I used @GoogleLitTrips recently in a class, and I've never seen so much wonder in students' eyes ๐ they loved it! ๐ and so did I! #tlap
A3: Collaboration! My awesome grade-level partners and I have committed to planning together. Ideas are flying and the students are benefitting. A strong and diverse PLN also supports me. #tlap
A3: My creative inspirations are educators and Ss who share new ideas and perspectives about topics that may differ from my own beliefs. This stretches my capacity to grow as an educator. #TLAP
A3: Way To Go Journals integrate a 10-12 minute lesson incorporating images, quotations & thought-provoking short writing and discussion activities https://t.co/tSiMMowWR2#tlap
A4: I greet kids each day with a high five and a smile. I get out the karaoke and sing and dance with them. I make sure they know what our school is about. #kindnessmatters#tlap
A4: I believe it is important to have students' work displayed in the classroom. This brings the magic because students can be proud of their work and inspired by others' work. #tlap
Q4: My favorite way is by first transforming myself into something new (costume, voice...) and as the year goes on my students begin to just imagine the classroom as the environments/sets that I pretend I am in because they are connected and in love with the learning! #tlap
A4 when we do @geniushour that is when magic starts to happen ... #tlap Also whenever I get rid of the book and bring out a Story (Storytelling is Fairy Gold - Ruth Sawyer). Yeah I get off on a tangent...
A4 #tlap I have a unique setting with flexible seating and various areas where kiddos can go to either decompress and/or work.... face trees, soft lighting etc
A4: Last month I๏ธ decorated my room as if a pirate came and stole some loot! Ss has to solve qr code math problems to get the items back. Currently planning a book tasting/preview for lit circles. Think fancy restaurant w/menus . #TLAP
A4: Student interests are #1! The the sky is the limit! I also love the plan BIG unit blow outs and surprise them! Make them remember the moments- everything else will come after #tlap
A4: In the classroom, it is magical when students take control of their own learning. I loved it when my Ss would show me how much they could do by themselves. #tlap
A4: Planning for individuals. Knowing your audience and planning accordingly. Magic happens when they think youโve created your lesson specifically for them. #tlap
A3:Hands on ๐, real learning experiences through costumes, hats๐ฉ, headbands, music๐ถ, dancing๐ and my personal favorite, a classroom transformation. Mix these together and you have your very own magic!๐ฆ#tlap
A4: I recently wrote a piece on creating the Happiest Place on Earth at school for Ss. This subject is near and dear to my โค๏ธ https://t.co/OLvjXE76SM#tlap
A4 When I taught Pre-k we would conclude our fairy tale unit with a โFairy Tale Ballโ ๐ on Valentineโs Day. โค๏ธ Cutest thing youโve ever witnessed. Littles had learned dances and manners and got all dressed up. Precious memory. We made the fairy tale real. #tlap
A4: Last month I decorated my room as if a pirate came and stole some loot! Ss has to solve qr code math problems to get the items back. Currently planning a book tasting/preview for lit circles. Think fancy restaurant w/menus . #TLAP
A4: Let the students own the space. Be a partner in their learning so that the environment is ever-changing. When students feel comfortable they will take risks with their learning. That is where real growth happens. #tlap
#tlap A4 The #BelieveSelfies I put on my walls inspire my Ss to #AlwaysBelieve Ss love seeing the pictures on the wall. They take ownership in the class when they are part of the room dรฉcor.
A4:Hands on ๐, real learning experiences through costumes, hats๐ฉ, headbands, music๐ถ, dancing๐and my personal favorite, a classroom transformation. Mix these together with a community and relationships with Ss and you have your very own magic!๐ฆ#tlap
A4: Set the stage with a hook & reel โem in with passion! Love using ๐ถ, themed costumes/decorations, anything they are not expecting! Bring on the magic of learning! ๐ฉ ๐ #tlap
A4: My classroom becomes a hospital and my students are surgeons completing surgeries that review standards in each subject area. They are always engaged! #tlap
A4: To completely re-vamp the classroom into something โnew.โ One day, my class turned into a cafe, complete with food, candles, music, โfireplaceโ streaming on the screen, etc. I was the โwaitress.โ SO FUN. #TLAP
A4: I gamified my classroom this year. No grades. Students earn badges and points when they show their learning. Individuals work hard to level up. Class goals and incentives also keep students moving forward together. #tlap
A3: Teachers and other educators are great when you need to gather ideas but the students are who really help guide the teacher in the interests of the classroom #barbersclass@barbersclass#tlap
A5: I have traditionally always stated the objectives at the beginning but love the challenge of revealing it at the end...keep engagement going! #TLAP ๐ฅ๐ซ
A4: My #flexibleseating arrangement, lack of teacher desk and constantly changing dramatic play area transforms MY room into OUR room each and every day. #tlap
A5 I believe it should be given at the beginning. Students, especially in sped need to know what is expected of them. It will help them be successful #tlap
A4: My favorite way to change my classroom into a magical learning environment is with #AugmentedReality and #VirtualReality! We are living in a time when we can take our students anywhere in the world without leaving our school! ๐ฉโ๐๐จโ๐#tlap
A4: I really like to involve my Ss in the MAGIC!! I have props & costumes for my Ss! It transforms them & creates a fun learning experience for them! #TLAP
A5 Make it a bit of both. Variety and differentiation are key. Sometimes state the objective and build collectively. Sometimes create discovery learning where students can critically think about the objective. No life situation is the same. Treat learning likewise. #tlap
A5: "Don't STEAL my STRUGGLE." ๐ Present the students with a little struggle and see what they can do when posed with a problem! You will be AMAZED! #TLAP
A5 Objectives and outcomes are different things - you can share a learning objective without dictating the outcome of the entire lesson (which Ss should be guiding!) #tlap
A5: I think itโs great to do both. Love to state objective first so students have a goal/outcome in mind, but also think itโs good to switch it up and let them figure it out through discovery! #TLAP
A5: Tease! Give the object at the end! Iโm a fan of @breakoutEDU boxes. Iโm currently planning a breakout having to do with the book, The Wild Robot. #TLAP
#tlap When you get a selfie with a kid, you become part of their world. At the end of the year, I cut out all the Selfies, sign the back of the picture, then give the pictures to the kids. #Legacy
#TLAP. A4: magical learning can be created by building relationships . Also.. it's fun to occasionally change the physical environment too. For example..having my 1st grade class build a 15 ft replica of the Mayflower in our room and giving tours to other classes
A5: huge advocate of project based learning here. I L O V E ๐ when Ss discover the objective through the progress of a project ๐ it allows them to take ownership of their learning. #tlap
A5: Let students follow the map. There are always hidden clues that will get you to where you need to be. It's about finding the answers that will lead you to where you really want to go. The success is in the journey, not the destination! #tlap
A5 Come on we are pirates here, ARR, You got to hook them! Not like I did today, and the students almost booed when they saw the slide with objectives. #tlap
A5: Great question! ๐ค I think it depends, but definitely has me thinking about how it relates the whole โdo we preteach vocabulary before reading a textโ question. ๐ #tlap
A5: Bookended maybe? Learning Target with success criteria should drive the lesson - then give students the opportunity to make connections at the end.#tlap
I haven't participated I don't think, but feeling in the mood to CONNECT. A4: I love project presentations that let them choose and tap into creativity #tlap
A4. As soon as my kiddos enter the classroom their playlist of songs is playing and they go right into #softstarts#choice#passion
No Morning work here- only energizing magical ๐ฆ๐คฃfun with family to start day! #TLAP
#tlap A5: I connect what we are doing to what will be discussed next. Whatever we work on in one unit will also be used in other units. My seniors do a senior paper first semester that connects to the senior project second semester.
A5. Have the Ss unpack the unit with you before it is delivered. Have them determine the 'why' of what they are learning by developing the objectives, goals, etc. #tlap
A5 Probably best to slowly reveal if you are looking for suspense. Iโm not sure that giving no guidance along the way would be the most effective. ๐ค #tlap
A5: tricky question! Most will say the objective should be stated at the beginning and repeated throughout the lesson. Itโs fun at times to have them discover it if you give them a heads up at the beginning so they will engage. โก๏ธโก๏ธโก๏ธ #tlap
A5 I think you have to let each lesson guide you. Sometimes the students need to know the what, why, and how up front. Other times them finding out those answers as they go is a part of the lesson. Go with the flow. #tlap
A5 Discovered at the end! When I stop teaching & facilitate Ss discovery of phenomena thru inquiry in their langage Ss really retain sci processes #tlap
A5: It depends! I often set the purpose at the beginning but have also had Ss determine it as we went through the lesson! I think both are acceptable! #TLAP
A5: One reason to give the objective at the beginning of a lesson is doing that gives the teacher an opportunity to connect/access prior knowledge/past learning to what Ss will be learning. #tlap
A5 I also like the idea of turning our learning targets into hooks posted before students enter the room. Thanks #LeadLAP@BethHouf and @burgess_shelley for that one. #TLaP
A5: The objective is the destination. It's fine if it's posted at the beginning. The magic is the vehicle used to reach the destination. That can be the mystery. It is the game changer. #tlap
A5 In math, I am all about posting the Core Math Idea. It helps my Ss know why we are doing what we are doing and is a great touch base at the end of class on how they feel we did getting to the CMI. #tlap
A5: I think it is important to give an objective at the beginning so the students can link what they're learning to the objective. Waiting to give the objective could be challenging for them, but I believe presenting it at the beginning is helpful in learning material. #tlap
A5 Make it a bit of both. Variety and differentiation are key. Sometimes state the objective and build collectively. Sometimes create discovery learning where students can critically think about the objective. No life situation is the same. Treat learning likewise. #tlap
A5: I have always stated the objective at the beginning of a lesson to build excitement about our learning destination. I used to love the look on Ss faces when they discovered they had arrived there on their own. #priceless#tlap
A5 Is your unit a mystery or a thriller? Sometimes finding out whodunit is the goal, and sometimes it's finding out how-they-dunit that's the goal. So to speak... #tlap
A5: Depends on the objective. Explicite scaffolding may need to occur if you wait to reveal at the end. Sometimes students need to know what they are working to obtain. I choose whichever one empowers the students most to obtain that objective. #tlap
A6 Decorate, use music and dance, use jokes. Take the learning outside the classroom. Personalize as much as possible. (in poetry I wrote a haiku & limerick about each student). Wrote a weekly class newsletter with stories about students for fun & engagement. #tlap
A5: This question has me ๐ค! I think itโs important for Ss to know what theyโre going to learn, and discover along the way. But the way mystery hooks Ss and fosters curiosity is extremely valuable! #tlap
A6: Relating things to the students. Our upcoming assessment students have a menu of choices. I am calling it "Progressive Era Football" but instead assignments being worth different points, they are worth different yards. Need to drive 75 yards for a TD! #tlap@ERobbPrincipal
#tlap A5 "technically"... Learning objective is "required" to be posted. Self discovery is LONGER LASTING. Just wondering... Do you have ALL your learning standards posted in your room? Teach with #MorePower#AlwaysBelieve
A6 Music, have a highly decorated room with lights, Ss artwork, also create fun activ, play games, do icebreakers once in a while and use a lot of humor :) #tlap
A6: in my classroom, we sing and rap the definitions to literary terms so that we can remember them. ๐ค We also have a game - any time I say a term, in conversation or instructing, they have to say the definition. They earn "points" + can beat other classes. #tlap ๐๐ป
A6: Nobody wants to be in an environment where the leader is miserable. Get up off your duff and have fun with those youngins! Be involved, smile, giggle, celebrate, restructure......... #tlap
A4: I find it that most engaging classrooms are where students can be their goofy-selves all while learning. I like the idea of creating various weekly themes for the students to partake in. It makes learning the material more fun! @barbersclass#barbersclass#tlap
I used to teach tone in literature by giving kids song lyrics, playing one version, asking them how it makes them feel, then play another version and make a comparison in tone and effect. #tlap
A6: Fun Matters. I talk about doing things with purpose. Fun is a purpose. If we make learning fun, we make school amazing. Every day create experiences that Ss are talking about #tlap
A6 Fun starts with a๐ for each one that enters the room. Fun continues with celebrating ๐ even the smallest accomplishments. And thereโs always music! ๐ ๐ถ #tlap
A4 Exactly this! And it is mainly the teacher's attitude that makes all the difference -- both towards the subject, towards the class, and towards the individual students. #tlap
I always find it funny when you intentionally use a pop culture reference incorrectly just to hear the collective "ugggggh" and then letting them "teach" you how to use it. #tlap
A5: While clearly sharing goals for the day with students is important, my mission for every lesson is to have students discover the big takeaways organically. If they have that โA-Haโ moment, they are much more likely to remember it than if I simply tell them! #TLAP
A6: trusting your kids, giving them freedom and creating a different experience everyday! Takes a lot of planning but if you listen to your kids it becomes natural. ๐คฃ๐ค ๐ป๐คก #tlap
A6 ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅWe bring our own fun and excitement. If the teacher is having fun so will the students. If the teacher is excited the students will be too. Set yourself on fire so others will come to watch you burn. ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ#tlap
#tlap A6 When I teach I try to immolate @ofctimallen Tim the Tool Man Taylor. I teach math with #MorePower with the Tool Mans grunts and all. The kids LOVE IT! Watch 1st min of video https://t.co/iO5rGwgO3C
I started by giving the lyrics to โThe Ghost of Tom Joadโ. Then Iโd play the Bruce Springsteen & Rage Against the Machine versions. They had to compare both and explain how both could express a different tone & create a different effect w the same lyrics #tlap
A6: Fun comes in many forms. However, the most important is that students need to see you living your passion in the classroom with them. If you aren't having fun teaching the lesson, they aren't having fun learning it. Smile, laugh, cheer, sing, dress like a pirate! #tlap
A6: in my classroom, we sing and rap the definitions to literary terms so that we can remember them. ๐ค We also have a game - any time I say a term, in conversation or instructing, they have to say the definition. They earn "points" + can beat other classes. #tlap ๐๐ป
A6. I have one class where the energy can be particularly negative depending on the day, so it is super important for me to reset myself each day before that hour so we set off on the right foot and have fun! #tlap

Great question! Raise point levels for students struggling with individual goals. Offer special power-ups and spot them points to keep them moving. Make big deals out of little victories. I use @classdojo to keep it all straight. #tlap
A6: No classroom of my own anymore but make sure Ss see us have fun by celebrating their Ts and an occasional tape the principal the wall day.. ๐คช๐คญ #tlap
A6: I try to make every lesson have an experience component. I teach rural MO HS Ss. How can they empathize w/a man on a ledge 11 stories up in NYC? W/Ss stranded on an island? I find ways to help them "live" it. #tlap
A6: Laughing with students and give them time to be kids and learn through games! I work with 7th and 8th grade students, so they love playing games and I incorporate learning while having fun! #tlap
A6: I play music a lot in class. (@theavettbros) Iโm mean, who doesnโt like a banjo?! I๏ธ also do Fun Friday where Ss get to write jokes on the whiteboard. I๏ธ have a reading graffiti wall, I๏ธ laugh, we all dance. Fun all around! #TLAP
A6: the power of music is limitless! Have kids were and produce their own songs and use them to help others learn! Itโs an amazing way to empower learners #TLAP
The Ss then would find their own songs and compare the original to the remake (or remakes if there was more than one). Then Iโd ask them to honk creatively about how they could take a song & express it in a different genre (e.g a rap song as a country song) #tlap
A6: We laugh, we dance, we sing, we cook, we paint, we celebrate, we encourage, we discover, we build, we create, we learn, we love, we innovate...and itโs awesome!๐๐๐๐๐ #tlap
๐BONUS QUESTION๐: TAG the most "pirate-like" educator you know. Tell us why they rock๐ธ๐คฉ! #TLAP (Hint: ADD these people to your PLC/PLN!) ๐
BONUS: The #yorkdukes Ts I get to work with every day! They bring it every single day and are creating experiences for Ss to improve...especially @KimSnodgrass@DebDiToro#TLAP
A6: I loved bringing music, singing, dancing, and movement into my K classroom. Doing props (cheers) is fun, too. I also have a tiara and pink feather boa that I'dl wear while teaching, so some silliness gets in too! And bubbles! #tlap

A6: Setting goals and maintaining a standard. This frees us up to have fun, be silly but still learn. It's about all of us having a common goal and being committed to reach it. #tlap
A6- I donโt have a classroom but an entire school filled with 1,000 K-5 students. Itโs so important to build in some FUN each day. I try to be an example of happiness. ๐ #TLAP
A6b: Caption This activity, #BookSnaps All About Me Kahoots, face painting, commenting with @Bitmoji , #sketchnotes and whatever else I come up with to help Ss learn. #tlap
A1: experiential learning! Yes, authentic learning is powerful, but we need kids to experience learning authentically to engage them and connect in a meaningful way! #TLAP
A5: I know it is important to provide the learning objective in the beginning of a lesson. However, I feel that students remember the lesson more if they seek out the learning objective themselves. #barbersclass@barbersclass#tlap
A6b: I like greeting my Ss w/ silly costumes in the morning!! Itโs sets the tone for a great day! Also, shows Ss that I like to have fun & can be silly! #TLAP
Can't limit to just one. @bmilla84 for her love, kindness, creativity & magic in grade 1; @lauriesmcintosh for limitless, kind, loving, incredible work with kindergarten; @mr_meighen for incredible creativity, fun, passion and driven education in high school. #inspiration#tlap

A6c: Ultimately, if I am having fun, I can make anything fun, even grammar. :) It's a mindset, not an activity. Enjoy your Ss and your profession. The fun will come. #tlap
A6: By having fun myself! If students see that you love what you do and that you are committed to having a great time without sacrificing productivity, they are much more likely to feel the same way. Enthusiasm is contagious! #TLAP
We can teach Ss to think critically & creatively with their own popular literature. Have them think critically & creatively by comparing & analyzing remakes, reboots & retcons #tlap

A2: Standard comes first: that way you know what sandbox you are playing in and know the rules of engagement. Once in he sandbox, there are no rules to how tall or amazing you get to build! Creativity and innovation can happen with any content any time! #TLAP
A6. Also, it's critical to intentionally catch kids throughout the day to have short conversations about anything! If you seek kids out, they'll notice! #tlap
#tlap stands for Teach Like a Pirate from @burgessdave They hold a chat at 6:00 PM PST. Just inviting them to join! Many teachers and educators participate. There is also #LEADLAP Lead Like a Pirate by @burgess_shelley Great book for #leaders

A6 corny jokes that will make them laugh but help remember. Like, When creating an Access relationship you must close the table. just like if you have a relationship with a girl you need to end it with the others. #tlap
A6: We need to remember that the day we have together will never repeat itself. This doesn't mean stress about what needs to be done, but cherish and enjoy the uniqueness of the educational moment. Today could be the day that changes a student's world! Or your world! #tlap

No pushback. @classdojo makes it all transparent. Parents see every point I give. Dojo has individual pie charts that I used for my parent conferences. Badges for Math, ELA, and behaviors paint a picture of the whole child. #tlap

A1 a hot topic for me is homework and tests!! Why so much homework? Why so many tests when we already have so much data thatโs reliable? My suggestion? More informal assessing! I know my kids and NEVER test them unless itโs a mandatory test! #ditchbook
