That's how it is here. When the sun is out, it's still relatively nice. But once it goes away, I climb under the covers. #idedchat

So, I had the pleasure of attending some PD events in the last 2 weeks - the Teaching Learning Coaching Conference, the Soluciones Conference, and the Family and Community Engagement Conference. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:11 PM EDT
Courage was a reoccurring theme - especially the Teaching, Learning, Coaching Conference - it WAS the theme. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:12 PM EDT
So, I thought - that is a great topic to chat around! #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:13 PM EDT
Q1: What is "courage" in general? #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
    Hi @goodn3rd I see you! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @goodn3rd
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A1: "Courage" is stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something that truly scares you. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
I like "stepping out of comfort zone" in this definition. #IDedchat
    • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A1: "Courage" is stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something that truly scares you. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A1: Courage - being willing to face your fears, get out of your comfort zone, be willing to be uncomfortable. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:17 PM EDT
Yes. The willingness to be uncomfortable. It really takes courage to be that way. When that happens, you are prone to be vulnerable and maybe actually learn/benefit from something. #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:17 PM EDT
Why is it important for us, as educators, to step out of our comfort zone. #IDedchat
    • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A1: "Courage" is stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something that truly scares you. #idedchat
  • kforsman96 Oct 24 @ 10:18 PM EDT
Courage is having the strength to venture and persevere through something difficult. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:19 PM EDT
Perseverance - such an important trait - it is like "grit" but more complex. #IDedchat
    In reply to @kforsman96
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:19 PM EDT
Examples for our students. They're little hermit crabs afraid of a new shell. Shows them we've all felt that. #IDedchat

  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:20 PM EDT
Hi Chris! Glad you made it tonight! #IDedchat

Hit and miss tonight...Red Sox are on. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:20 PM EDT
If we are able to step out of our comfort zone, we learn along with the students. If we are complacent, then the students do not benefit much. #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:20 PM EDT
Yes - and that vulnerability is important to model for students - to show our "human" side. :-) #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • kforsman96 Oct 24 @ 10:21 PM EDT
A2 It is important for educators I step out of our comfort zones because we expect our students to do it on a daily basis. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:21 PM EDT
I have it on in the background. Would love to see a sweep happen of LA. #idedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc, @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:22 PM EDT
Agreed. Practice what we preach. If we want students to step out of their comfort zone, then we must be willing to as well. #idedchat
    In reply to @kforsman96
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:22 PM EDT
At the #TLCVegas18, @jimknight99 encouraged all of us to have courage to Lead, Learn, Love, and Leave a Legacy. #IDedchat
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:23 PM EDT
I've struggled with the Leave a Legacy. I think it's one of those things that should come naturally. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @jimknight99
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:24 PM EDT
Agreed! Often times they learn more from our actions than the curriculum that we are trying to present. #idedchat
    In reply to @kforsman96
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:25 PM EDT
Q2: Here is @jimknight99 definition of Courage - how do we "Hold a vision and make it become reality?" #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:26 PM EDT
Addendum - What is your vision for a better world - what is the vision you have for your classroom/school/district? #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:27 PM EDT
I think leaving a "legacy" has to do with how we want our students to remember us. #IDedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc, @jimknight99
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:27 PM EDT
Purpose, passion, confidence, and self-determination are some key pieces. But I think partnership is as important in the recipe. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @jimknight99
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:28 PM EDT
Partnerships-tell me more about what you are thinking here. #IDedchat

Collaboration and finding others that are like-minded. We travel further together when others are filling the tank with fuel. #IDedchat

  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:29 PM EDT
I think I've hit my analogy limit for the night. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:30 PM EDT
A2: By sharing your vision with those that can make it happen. This then gets buy-in and ultimately leads to team learning and a systematic approach toward success. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:30 PM EDT
When we think "vision" - this deals with the courage to lead - leadership doesn't just fall in the laps of administrators. We all can be leaders in our own strengths. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:31 PM EDT
How can you make it happen within your own classroom? #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • kforsman96 Oct 24 @ 10:32 PM EDT
I think of creating the culture where everyone is a learner... Ts, Ss, Admin, Custodian..... everyone in the school. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:33 PM EDT
By sharing your vision with the students and hope they buy-into the process, then leads to teamwork in the classroom, and thinking systematically at the overall approach/reason you're teaching #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:33 PM EDT
BOOM! A culture of learners - rather than just a culture of "best practices" or "teaching" Learners encompass so many more! #IDedchat
    • kforsman96 Oct 24 @ 10:32 PM EDT
I think of creating the culture where everyone is a learner... Ts, Ss, Admin, Custodian..... everyone in the school. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:34 PM EDT
But in building a shared vision, it's nice to have some that don't necessarily think like you. Gain different perspectives and see all possible outcomes. #idedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:35 PM EDT
Yes - multiple perspectives are important - but even those that think differently can fill each other's buckets. :-) #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @hiccupc
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:35 PM EDT
Agreed. Those that don't think in the same manner sometimes offer great insights. Happened today in a group I worked with. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @averyteach
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:36 PM EDT
I think it's somewhat like complementing your sweet cookie with just a bit of salt on top. Brings out the best flavors. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @averyteach
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:37 PM EDT
    Ugh! Another analogy! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:37 PM EDT
Q3: What does it mean to have the courage to learn? #IDedchat
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:38 PM EDT
A3: Means you can admit you know you don't know. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • kforsman96 Oct 24 @ 10:39 PM EDT
Having the courage to learn means being willing to embrace failure and keep trying. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A3: It means that you have the mindset that you're always learning and that you WANT to learn. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A3: The courage to learn - we become stagnant as adults when we stop learning. It can even cause us to lose hope. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:40 PM EDT
A3: It means that you are willing to make mistakes and keep moving forward. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:40 PM EDT
YES-FEAR can be one of the biggest barriers to learning. We need to keep learning so that we can model overcoming failure for students. #IDedchat
    In reply to @kforsman96
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:40 PM EDT
    Guessing this is @LCHS_Bio tonight #idedchat #misshim
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A3: @jimknight99 shares that we become a better version of ourselves when we continue to learn. We can BE more! #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:42 PM EDT
Even just admitting them go a long way! #idedchat
    In reply to @kforsman96
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:42 PM EDT
A3: If we want to have the courage to lead - we must continue to learn. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:43 PM EDT
I thought you had exhausted your analogies - this is a great one! #IDedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc, @WinkelerD
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:43 PM EDT
I agree with this, especially nowadays with how simple it is to be simply entertained. Easy to consume rather than challenge yourself to learn. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:44 PM EDT
Never exhausted, they just become exhausting. :) #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @WinkelerD
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:45 PM EDT
Q4: What does it mean/why important to have the courage to love? #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A4: When we are coaching others, giving feedback to students, it is important to have humility in order to see the best in others. #IDedchat
    • averyteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 12:04 PM EDT
One of the conditions of dialogue is love - to see the best in each other. In order to help each other become the best versions of ourselves. #TLCVegas18
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:47 PM EDT
But they are relatable, so acceptable. #idedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc, @averyteach
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:47 PM EDT
I don't know if anyone else has had a challenging student *cough their name under your breath* but learning to find something to at least like of them can help the connection #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:47 PM EDT
A4: To show "love" to our students is to show humility - to suspend judgement and think of yourself less - so that you can help others. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:49 PM EDT
A4: @jimknight99 talks about love as engaging the will for the good of another - it is connection with our students so that we can help them see the best in themselves. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:49 PM EDT
A4: Because we could all stand to be like Mr. Feeny. https://t.co/8jCxxqnjio . #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:50 PM EDT
    So much YES! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:51 PM EDT
And many times this take courage - we default to our own belief/moral judgements...it take courage to step outside ourselves and see life from the perspective of another. #IDedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A4: THIS - this is why it is important that we model "love" "humility" "civil discourse" for our students. #IDedchat
  • jimknight99 Oct 24 @ 10:54 PM EDT
I have to say, I'm really enjoying all of your comments. Thank you for all you're sharing tonight. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:55 PM EDT
A5: What might it mean to have the courage to "leave a legacy?" #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:56 PM EDT
Thanks! This is part of my learning in "action" - to continue to share with others and reflect as I put practices in place. #IDedchat
    In reply to @jimknight99
  • WinkelerD Oct 24 @ 10:57 PM EDT
A5: It means that you want to leave a lasting impact on someone who walks through your door, to where they leave a better person. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Oct 24 @ 10:58 PM EDT
A5: When you are walking in your purpose - you can drop "seeds" along the way - those can grow into a legacy. #IDedchat
  • hiccupc Oct 24 @ 10:59 PM EDT
I'll admit, I haven't read about @jimknight99 's discussion of this. I feel like this can come naturally with Ts. I ran into a former 2nd grader from 16 years ago. He yelled out my name, in a good tone this time. I don't think I worked toward that back then. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @jimknight99
  • kforsman96 Oct 24 @ 10:59 PM EDT
Having the courage to “leave a legacy” means to push people’s thinking to make yourself and others better. #IDedchat
