The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
It would be lots of hands on hours in the classroom, building relationships, classroom management and active engagement strategies would be the first unit of study! #bfc530 😊
Ts should have to take a course in student engagement and SEL. Many new Ts get flustered because they don't habe all the tools they need. Let's help prepare them right. #bfc530
Good morning everyone! Trying to square the fact that I am in ‘clean up’ phase - final grades (have I mentioned I hate them?), last conferences, filing, tidying...how did THAT happen already? #bfc530
The Power of Twitter Chats. I have learned more from Twitter than any other PD that I have been involved with. This course will teach undergrads how to use this tool from the beginning of their teaching careers. Think about it, true Personalized PD. #bfc530
I don’t think a single class would make a difference ... I am thinking a 3 year residency after college ... heavy on the mentorship filled with in classroom teachable moments. #BFC530
Hello Tuesday, and good morning friends! Today is a good day to take notice and remember the small moments that make every day special, look for them! 😊 #bfc530
I don’t think a single class would make a difference ... I am thinking a 3 year residency after college ... heavy on the mentorship filled with in classroom teachable moments. #BFC530
I thought my B. Ed. program did a good job getting us into the classroom early and often, but young teachers need as much exposure to the classroom as possible. There needs to be a minimum number of volunteer hours and certain mandated hours OUTSIDE of student teaching. #bfc530
Good Morning Most Awesome Educators:)
Just as my mentor arranged his class: I would arrange people in a circle for discussions NOT lectures. I would exchange ideas. And remind them to not just listen to Ss but hear their students.
#bfc530
It would have to be incorporating visual representations and manipulatives into the MS math classroom-unifix and base 10 blocks aren’t only for the younger ones! #bfc530
I have 2 ideas:
1) Taking Ownership of Your Professional Development, which would cover listening to edu podcasts, Twitter (PLN and chats) and Edcamps, conferences, etc.
2) Survivng Your First 5 Years, which would focus on time management, morale, and self-care. #BFC530
If you don't like it when: Ss are frequently late, leave school early, talk in class, are a distraction then make sure you are: on time to school, stay through your scheduled time, focus at meetings, let others do their job. Modeled behavior is part of #schoolculture. #bfc530
My Ed course was outstanding, and I wish others had the same opportunity. Part of that was because I jumped onto TWO beta programs, also partly because I was in my 40s and took it ALL in and then some 😂😂. One year was all classes in an el school-learn then practice. #bfc530
How to write and deliver lessons that meet the needs of a variety of learners. It would be in an authentic situation where they would be more like an apprentice studying under master Ts. Focus would always be in continuous development of relationships #bfc530
I've always through it'd be great for BEd students to be in their schools full time and one day per week they get taught their courses by a teacher at that school or prof from the uni. In a room at their practicum school .
#bfc530
Good morning #bfc530. A course would have Ts getting into classrooms as soon as possible. Doesn’t make any sense to wait until practicum or student teaching to see what being in a classroom is like.
Idk if we prepare our ST for the volume of work. I don’t know if they truly know what goes into a lesson; especially those student teaching in the spring. Is there a way to prepare them better for that? #bfc530
I just read a tweet about this! It would be a course about building relationships with our kids. Not to be their friend, but to be a caring, trusted adult in their lives. Won’t solve all of our problems, but it will take care of many. #bfc530
#BFC530 for B. Ed. design a class w 3 modules w 3 units each on problem based learning outcomes and include 1 module w 3 units of PD module; 12 units all.
Working with new teachers, I take a poll at the end of each year, regarding what they will focus on in year two, classroom management tops the list consistently! #bfc530
I would have pre-service teachers need to take classes in "Basic Repairs" w/lessons as"What to do when the copier jams", "Paperwork 101", & "How to Respond to Emails", & but most of the time would be practice in front of classroom #bfc530
What made a difference for me (only 2 ed classes before teaching) was landing on a solid team of teachers who were focused on making me and the team better as educators. #BFC530
Reflection & Motivation 101
Ts need support analyzing & interpreting data & observations ~ Motivating Ss to be inspired to take risks & grow based on the data & observations. I recently wrote a blog entry on reflections #BFC530#LoveLiteracyLearninghttps://t.co/fX4PEF6Qgr
I thought my B. Ed. program did a good job getting us into the classroom early and often, but young teachers need as much exposure to the classroom as possible. There needs to be a minimum number of volunteer hours and certain mandated hours OUTSIDE of student teaching. #bfc530
I agree with you. Very much so. They need to not only see it all, but experiencing the school setting as much as possible~ the meetings, the prep work, school culture, etc.
Morning ! Another several commute and a critically challenging day ahead- but it's always a positive way to start my day with the #bfc530 crew so wanted to take a min to say hello and wish u all an awesome day !!

I see a need for new teachers to have more education on Trauma Sensitive response to students. Luckily, my district is proactive in training staff throughout the year, but it would help new Ts to have some Trauma Training knowledge prior to their first days at school. #bfc530
All theory goes out the window when you are trying to control a bunch of 8 (or 10, or 16) year olds that are not having it. We need to equip our ST with strategies to use. #bfc530
Imagine how good the lectures would be if a teacher had been in the classroom teaching ... able to move beyond the “what if” questions into sharing experiences ... “so this happened” #bfc530
My friend's father who went through teacher education in the early 60's had to get an apartment off campus & was only allowed on for official trips during student teaching to prepare & experience life outside of college as a teacher #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530! Josh from NJ. I would design a rigorous course on Equity. Ss who couldn’t pass the course would have other prerequisites to take before having another shot. We realize how important inequity and disparity is negatively impacting our society.
It would be a year long placement in an actual classroom with a strong mentorship piece. The focus would be on connecting and building relationships with students and colleagues. #bfc530
I would love to see a course dealing with social justice and inequity embedded into B. Ed. programs. So much of what we learn in teacher's college comes from a privileged stance. #BFC530
A course for teacher candidates should include many opportunities to spend time learning in real classrooms, with a balance of pedagogy, tech, social/emotional instruction through the program. They need to know that students need to be challenged, loved and appreciated!#bfc530
I just read a tweet about this! It would be a course about building relationships with our kids. Not to be their friend, but to be a caring, trusted adult in their lives. Won’t solve all of our problems, but it will take care of many. #bfc530
College ... like K-12 often relies to heavily on book learning and not enough on practical application ... imagine what would happen if doctors began operating after only learning the “theory” of medicine. #BFC530

True, I needed to improve my practice & learned more as I taught over 1st 2 yrs, but wish there was more time discussing practical side to prepare for everything else. Best practical advice I ever heard from prof, "Be nice to the janitors, they can be your biggest allies" #bfc530

We also need to make sure that student teachers get strong teachers. The university needs to make sure that the mentor teachers are doing the very best they can. I haven’t always seen it that way.. #bfc530

A course in YA lit for all secondary teachers, regardless of content focus, would help new teachers promote reading in their schools and also introduce the diverse set of experiences and circumstances young people bring to the table through well-crafted fiction. #bfc530
I always say I feel like Im riding a wave of tech in the classroom in my teaching career. Im not behind or ahead, I caught it just in its infancy & continue the ride #bfc530
Best thing I did was a beta program where we had classes all morning in an empty el school c’room, then went and shadowed, taught all afternoon. We did everything from create bulletin boards to parent nights, small reading groups, data, etc. Not practicum, just class #BFC530
Think how just three recent books -- Orbiting Jupiter, Long Way Down, and The Serpent King -- open our eyes as Ts to the complex lives young people lead outside of the school life we see each day. #bfc530
I am good Veronica! Haven’t seen you in a while. I know it is a busy time for everyone. Hopefully, we’ll see each other soon to catch up. Are you going to #TCT18 or #ISTE18? #bfc530
Agreed..On both ends..Half of my student teachers have not been up to par at all, and I mean at all.. it is the university’s job to make sure they don’t get that far. #bfc530
Have a great Tuesday. After PARCC testing, our 7th grade will spend the rest of the day preparing their presentation for our Biome Zoo Project. Cant wait to see their finished products. Im Out! #bfc530
Buildings and districts need to actively push this during PD breakouts. Their is so much to learn from educators you may never meet face to face. #bfc530
Agreed! I love love love the addition of technology. I love what the internet has done for my teaching. I believe it is the sole reason why I still love my job after 30 years. #bfc530
How to get class attention with minimal T voice, how to group effectively and how to promote equity of voice in class w/out bias. Also, humor and improv training. #bfc530
I may have to pitch that to my dean and the applicable department chairs @RutgersGSE. Very interesting! I could defintely teach that course. I was a student in the 1980’s, teacher and k-12 admin in the 2000’s and now college admin as a practitioner. #BFC530
Always tell students when I was there age I didnt check my teacher's website to see what the homework was if I forgot, I called a friend, sometime multiple if they forgot too #bfc530
My course for teacher candidates would be one focused on learning to teach to the whole child and would be centered on social emotional components. Teachers would have lots of first hand experiences. #BFC530@BFC_530

I'd design a course that teaches how to make and prioritize to-do lists. Course culminates in a project where the pre-service teacher executes the extras with such efficiency that the majority of time was invested in making student learning experiences more meaningful. #bfc530
❤️ spent some time w/a 2nd grader today after the funeral of his beloved 15 yr. old sister who passed recently... tells me how “awesome” his teacher is, how much she loves ❤️him. TY Mrs. O’Neill ~ Mendon-Upton Schools ...it meant the world to LB that you were there today 😊
My course would be about how to connect and interact with all kinds of people. Key emphasis would be on manners, public relations, building relationships, perspective, empathy, service, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills. #bfc530#sel
A course on teaching writing. And teaching reading. Explicitly. We are all teachers of reading and writing and so many of us don't have the tools to effectively teach students those crucial skills. #BFC530
If I were to design a course for Ts, the pre-req would be a course called Understanding Poverty, Trauma and Food Insecurity in Education leading to a Developing Resiliency in Education course. It would be practical application instead of theoretical discussion. #BFC530
Great question. I would plan half day lectures/workshops and the other half in the field (variety of classrooms, different education systems) getting hands-on experience. #bfc530
Definitely a course on pedagogical documentation (all grades) that would allow candidates to a few hrs a week in classes, observing, interpreting, discussing Ss’ learning. This course would subsequently get at Assess FOR and AS practices, & planning responsive moves. #bfc530
Brian, There you go again being a catalyst. I just had the idea of bringing in four guests of different eras that highlight the importance of four overarching topics for each era: 1) value of an ed, 2) pedagogy, 3) ed tech & 4) cultural sensitivity. #bfc530
Morning, #bfc530. For teacher candidates, I'd like to design a rethinking-curriculum course. It'd mash up backwards design w/universal design for learning & design-thinking principles. 4th element would address standards-based assessments & grading in this revamped world.
Unfortunately, it won’t be a course for this 2018-2019 school year because it is too late. However, it gives me almost a year to give some thought to my pitch and how it would look and develop standards and objectives. Brian, As you can see, my wheels are really turning. #bfc530
A #NWP class. I was able to do it (somewhat - more emphasis on connected learning) w content literacy class designed by others but I would love to do a full blown model #bfc530
I would have pre-service teachers need to take classes in "Basic Repairs" w/lessons as"What to do when the copier jams", "Paperwork 101", & "How to Respond to Emails", & but most of the time would be practice in front of classroom #bfc530
I would design a course around co-teaching & collaborating for & w/ everyone. To also include how to really read and use data to drive instruction along with approoriate grouping of Ss that ebbs and flows w/ their needs. #bfc530
