#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

I flip my classes in Stage 6... so not really an issue... we can make time up in other areas...
A3: A really meaty political or historical cartoon, stats or a contentious photo with a leading question used to work really well.
A3: seamless &. Students r given time 2 reflect on content and assess if they are aligned 2 the learning intention
A3. Use transitions as an opport 2 build classroom community- Ss need 2 give each other a complement as they move on
So true but often the dreamers then do what was once thought impossible.
You can't say this often enough. So true! https://t.co/XaC0xsUVNN
One of the great things about chats like is the power of learning with like-minded educators.Don't miss the chance to connect too!
A3: Give a prompt to reflect on while transitioning, or give a hint what we will be learning next. Ss think about connections
what? I am an honorary Australian? I am adding this to my CV right now
A3 Why can't Ss transition when they are ready? We are so constricted by time. Let them be constructive and engaged
A3 Usually when Ss ready or bell time.Transition betw subjects flexible. If something is going really well why stop
A3: purpose! A transition can lead to the intro of the next lesson, calm them down, rev them up or provide a chance to connect
Couldn't agree more, Steve!! https://t.co/P5lfgfoKV2
A2 Humility is so important. Let kids see you take responsibility for mistakes & take joy in sharing knowledge
A3 - Stretching or mobile discussions - get up and get active. Find a partner. Physical scales.
Sit down and start afresh
Looks like we have and what an awesome trio
I try to be on stage as little as possible
Tweets going so fast I can't even like! \0/
A3 we use & brain boost body challenges, DEAD - drop everything & draw, doodling, class karaoke!
A3: transitions almost always involve movements to change pace and mindset - I also love using tech or music
Dreamers that do and Doers that dream! https://t.co/UgOxZO7nnf
So true but often the dreamers then do what was once thought impossible.
I am flipping PD too - learning isn't just for students!
A3 blended all subjects. Ss could have choice, voice, and move at own pace. Ditched desks! Transformed my life! Best years ever.
no just teachers as dreamers, but let kids be dreamers in the classroom
thats right! I still rmber trying to plan every lesson to the minute. today-focus on a KLI through question and thinking
Fridays I get 4 periods with one class... it's meant to be 2 maths / 2 sci but i just go with the feel
A2) Must have heart for Ss & learning, must want to assist in their success, not about points you'll take off if assign. is late
A2: . Absolutely adaptability and reflection.
skill - those ribs looked skilfully done and the kids Peruvian pork rolls ... well taught there!
A2: Teacher must be a risk-taker and an innovative thinker...open to allowing students to lead inquiry-based learning.
off task is the new learning strategy. Get with it@
couldn't agree more! Our Ss love movements
A3 in years gone bye I often give Ss the opportunity to design their own timetable... they choose what they do when...
A3: give students opportunities for learning, create audience and real chances to present their learning results
A3: Sometimes I use 5 minutes to gather themselves, or but at other times I let them continue until natural close.
A3 Apart from AFL players, how many jobs have a bell ring to say when you eat? Need a better way to allow creative juices to flow
I think disruptors are dreamers. There dreams are the different possibilities for what could be
What is the greatest challenge teachers face in the classroom? Please fill out this short survey & RT https://t.co/0qXHbrJeYP …
it's useful to have one in the staff room too!!
A3: Have reflection prompts hidden behind clock faces. Ss choose and think about during transitions & share with small group
A3: S's need to know what to expect-I find providing some type of agenda, daily "wish" list for S's makes transitions easier
A3 letting them know there will be transition, using timer, having routines in place
off task is the new learning strategy. Get with it
General Patton - Only one way to lead. Like you would a piece of spaghetti, from the front!
YES! In many cases, the dreamers are only seeing the future first!
Absolutely agree with this. https://t.co/zyoVjJBxVj
A2: Teacher must be a risk-taker and an innovative thinker...open to allowing students to lead inquiry-based learning.
Think there's a place for each. Play in an orchestra or have a self-directed jam session: both are valuable
A3: Depends on what I'm transitioning to and from - generally signpost it clearly to students though. https://t.co/5a0oPMMvPC
A4. I ensure the classroom layout is not set in stone - constantly changes on needs of students
First rule: ditch the teacher desk. Send a message that space is for student learning.
A3 exit tweets for self reflection Rebus best app ever
A4. As a HS teacher this is the hardest... only in the same room for 1 class... rest are everywhere for each period :(
A4: Dependent on the class, students and the need. They have input and choice with what works best for their learning.
And don't forget our own on Monday nights! Plus every October!
In time learning and also know when to cut a lesson/redirect if it's not working out
A4 - Students always get to sit where they want. I move if appropriate. Stand up desks. Allow to sit on floor. Age dependent.
I think they're more visionaries - plan the future with imagination & wisdom
A2 Knowledge of subject&child development. Order&organisation. Communication skills.
Yes, no different to side-chats in twitter-often the best and deepest learning!
unfortunately to "explore new territory" we have to complete a risk assessment
A3) Music is a must, when song is over, que to begin
A4: Unfortunately I have a very small class in terms of floor area, do change seating plan weekly though using picker
A4: space is flexible, easily changed for a variety of learning structures. independent or collaborative. plugged in or unplugged
A3 We revisit the lesson goal to close the circle before moving to the next
is now trending in USA, ranking 22
A4. Flexibly. In the mathematics classroom, there has to be space for loud arguing, structured discussion & contemplative silence
A4 First rule: ditch the teacher desk. Send a message that space is for student learning.
a4 I love anything with wheels but adding power to our tables has forced them into one configuration
That's why I love anonymous Padlets, people can go for gold without fear.
A4 Structured Teaching framework w stations around the room. Students moving between activities and spaces
A4 We have a flexible learning space so ss choose where they sit (or stand) based on the lesson. stools, bean bags, cushions etc
A4 - Depending on the lesson will determine the seating. Ss are encouraged to use the classroom to maximise their learning
I love watching Ss sketch note way off topic ☺️ disruptors
A4 mobile furniture and allow activity to determine set up
A4. Fostering a positive classroom culture. So important in small spaces!
A4. Try to keep the space agile, flexible, always changing, and in motion.
A4. Ss often move the furniture to meet their own needs - they are the architects of their own learning space
A3: Begin with settling in and end every day with reflection of goals and assessment of where we are in project. Lots of movement
I think that we need to remember that flexible spaces doesn’t mean changing the room around each week, or moving students.
A4. this is where I am super jealous of primary school teachers!!! I want my own room!!
A4 .daily explain what's on using visual timetable, allow for choice and voice within predictable routine
A3: more personalisation and individualisation could be supportive in questions of transitions
A4 freeform + natural selection, good choices = good seating, bad choices and I make seating choices. break the cord to the front
A4 moved out as many tables as possible, provide other seating options & clipboards & allow Ss to choose
A3 transitions can be part of structure- but can become natural when Ss have freedom. Like a time to change channels and move on?
Transitions often come by reading the room. While I'm observing and listening, I make choices to move folks along as needed
Hahahaha, trending in the USA before we started trending in Oz, Global Aussies https://t.co/uYGqRVcOZh
is now trending in USA, ranking 22
A4 Our space needs to be adaptable so we've decided on wheeled tables that can be reconfigured easily, but haven't found any yet!
yes! Music and movement a perfect combination!
It’s important in all spaces, not just small ones :)
I agree, there needs to be some link to the present, doesn't have to be much though.
A4) In most cases I let space and seating go where teh Ss feel they need to be. Sometimes they all crowd and I get a dancefloor
A4 with as little furniture as possible- no teacher desk, maximise floor space, no fixed permanent Ss spots. Lots of movement
dreamers are the one who figure out how to fit a Aquarius peg in a round hole
A4: I'm a firm believer in a fluid classroom and children are responsible for where they sit. It oftens improves learning
A4 -dont get too much choice in sec - not in one room - so I have to be flexible with what i get. will move about if needed.
A4. Here's a challenge. Does your room have a "front"? Why? No rooms in my house have a front. Why does the classroom?
A4: How do you manage space and seating in your class space? Flexible, comfortable, warm/cool, fresh air (esp with Yr 9 boys)
A4 MY class space would be so amazing! But usually teachers in Germany don’t have "their" rooms – the Ss have one and the Ts move
whatever media is used it is all about expression
couldn't agree more. Spaces and learning need to be responsive to student needs and the intent of the lesson
We can way the Estonian and Aussie flags together tonight
They're often the ones who end up learning the most in class IMO.
A4) Used to use outdoors, hallways not just classroom, in cyber setting Ss have comforts of home
A4: the space should never dictate the learning, needs to be agile, flexible and purposeful for learning
A4 If I find them in rows we move them into pods -s/times get rid of them altogether!
A4 - For seniors in particular, flexibility is key.
A3 I used to get Ss to have all they need on desks to make transitions efficient. But then I learnt that the brain needs movement.
Generally let students choose their work space. Occasionally suggest students might choose a better option https://t.co/aUKjisRS6S
the beauty of our profession - facing the unknown on a regular basis
A3: Transitions should always be structure but should include some space to release energy, Music, movement, dance, game, clapping
A4 we start with a 'how might we best...' question regarding space. Revisit regularly.
traditionally moved them out of classroom to admin - now trying to provide forums - for them to share the work
A4: flexible learning space that Ss play a key role in.What activities are taking place & how can the space support that learning?
A4. Very fluidly - it changes for every lesson and every set of Ss I have.
Yeah sadly, I normally do the activity first then worry about the paperwork later.
A4: No seats, unless they are writing, then they stand. I don't make them stand, they just dislike my seats. Plus, its a kitchen.
Ohlalala, I'm about to go Kangaroo riding too ... hehehe , See you in Denver https://t.co/1qQCxrrPk8
thanks, Brett! Just popping in! About to catch a flight back home.
❤️ this! https://t.co/6gUXC13ZBT
A4. Here's a challenge. Does your room have a "front"? Why? No rooms in my house have a front. Why does the classroom?
I cannot keep up with all your amazing insights! This is one where I'll definitely be going through the archives!
A4: I like to have a class that facilitates collaborative learning and a way that can help keep students engaged
A4 we co designed waterholes, campfires, caves, genius bars, tinker tables & 'off the grid' spaces in my room, flexible & comfy
A4 small class/ small space: flexible seating, no desks, sofa, round tables, windowsill space, no teacher desk, carpet area
A4. I make sure to have space 4 loud, wet, quite and dry.
A4: Change it when they least expect it or if there's a purpose for learning. I love me a good "U" shape or chevrons for groups.
To be honest, sometimes with precision, sometimes chaotically, always trying to give student's control and choice.
A4: I have not really a chance to change space or seating. I haven't an own room. I have to change rooms for nearly every lesson
A4. Flexible seating, cushions, cubes, bouncy balls, clip boards, SS white boards.
Sounds like a great plan, we've been waving the Samoan one for - wonderful time 4 all :)
Yes and expansion and enjoyment!
Facebook blocked in Hanoi today so am entertaining myself using Twitter , so just joined a chat about Art of Teaching
Yes, yes, yes. We teach the whole student!
A4 flexibility is key, as is getting as much learning as possible out of the classroom
A4: BE flexible. If students learn better movin, they move. 21st century ed = movement, collab & independence
Come to Victoria some time and lets talk Brett. I would love to show you where I work
oooo, food for thought! science lab - has a front bench - sorry but i love i, love my sci lab bench
Ss learn at their own pace do not penalize for late assignments
A3: To be honest, sometimes with precision, sometimes chaotically, always striving for student control and choice.
I put Pink Floyds "wish you were here" on for homeroom the other day. They were all so mellow afterwards
A4 removed desks. Added whiteboard tables, comfy seating, choice in where to sit. Painted whiteboard tables! No teacher desk.
A4Door broke & couldn't get into classroom - taught under trees - have done it twice since (by choice not because of broken door!)
A4: Love having students in groups - by ability so they're working at their level, or mixed so they're all helping each other
A4 Ss have input but we work with what we've been given! Manage to fit collaborative, independent & floor work areas
Sorry for hopping out Family issues! 😉
A4. Always ensure there is a lrg movement/meeting space 4 whole class & there are places 4 individual quiet retreat
A4 I see space in a classroom as the parts where there is nothing. They're the only parts where the students can actually be.
A4 we had high tables on wheels, bean bags, round tables, low seats, glass walls & mobile devices - zero challenging behaviour!
A3 It create transitions between lessons by linking content between subjects to blur boundaries.
A4: don't have a room anymore, but am all about flexible learning spaces that meet the needs of S and the lesson. Configurable!
A4: Have traditional tables&desks but provide area w/rug,pillows, beanbags 4 S's 2 use any way they like-fake standing desks also
A4: collaboration is important, so students sit and work in groups to create and discuss. Mounted monitors give all stu access
A4 sitting in groups chat share ideas I hate my yr5's sitting on the floor looking down don't like power ratio its intimidating
A4: I'd set my room up with more opportunities to eat together. but no space. Will sort it out one day. Eating together is good!
where the board is. But students don't face that way and I rarely stand there
Calling on Victorian Conferences... A request has been made... https://t.co/F1JJcu7JYX
Come to Victoria some time and lets talk Brett. I would love to show you where I work
A3: Transition can be aided by integration of curriculum and learning opportunities...Ss see connectedness and purpose.
Exactly right https://t.co/OQ0PRmG172
A4. Here's a challenge. Does your room have a "front"? Why? No rooms in my house have a front. Why does the classroom?
I recently found white it's contact and covered my tables! Revelation! Ss love it!
A3. I always transition into Maths with a https://t.co/LOoF7viG1G activity (self plug sorry) - slow internet late answer
anyone have standing desks?
Yep, it is a simple solution, but one that works!
I'm not saying we need to ditch the front. I am saying we need to think think think, why are things the way they are.
A4 space should be flexible. More to fit activity. Straight lines need not apply
Do you get consistency with classes... I have secret hiding spots in rooms I use for my stuff
We had picnic benches and a courtyard Ss lived bring outside
A4 not usually an issue in a class, typically in the classroom tables are grouped
Move out of a traditional classroom, et students sit on floor or outside. No teacher's desk. https://t.co/M4LvqytXjr
Yep and they are well utilised.
A4. Variety of seating available - beanbags, couch, trad chairs, cushions etc
used to move Ts out of classroom to admin - now trying forums for Ts to share the work without leaving the "canvas"
A3 I create transitions between lessons by linking content between subjects to blur boundaries.
just one class I see every period in the same room... every other class is a different room each lesson :(
A4 I have to see everyone. They can be in a circle or square, but I don't like when they hide. https://t.co/9xO6gCYOa6
I rarely use the whiteboard anymore, but since I share rooms everything still points towards it
Some great ideas in that video! Watching on monitor 2! =)
.A4 Ss chose.Have some desks, also couch, bean bags,Ss kneel at low tables or sit on cushions or lie on floor.Ss swap too while wking
A4: give students voice and choice as learners - this is how I gave mine choice in designing their space https://t.co/YOX7Fw0PMO
A4 This Q only highlights the gap between public & private schools
Don't over crowd. My Ss are still coming to terms with no assigned spot and you can move the tables https://t.co/EJINms78Hm
when I had 80 min lessons it wasn't so bad... but in 50min it's nearly impossible
Q5: Ideas - How do you use questioning and discourse to get the best out of ALL of your students? https://t.co/KRMlaliOw5
giving Ss choice in designing spaces means they'll respect their purpose & use accordingly same w resources
A4 The best learning space is where I can be on my tummy with my Ss. Sometimes, I do sit up. Not often at a desk
yep agree, was an interesting thought. love those outside the box ideas.
I agree , often they're just bored or disillusioned.
How have I only just seen you in my feed? https://t.co/IN8hNphz0X
A4: Have traditional tables&desks but provide area w/rug,pillows, beanbags 4 S's 2 use any way they like-fake standing desks also
A4: Collaborative groups based on data with some space of student choice. Ss should be safe and with equal access to resources
A4: Ability to adapt and change the space according to needs is important, but in HS sometimes causes issues. Move it-put it back!
I'm not in a traditional classroom and students can sit wherever they want
The title of this made me smile! I have an autistic S who can't help but point out all of my mistakes!
A4 and there has to be paint. Has to be!
A4: Had to move rows of tables into collaborative groups every room I went into last year - so frustrating.
Hate that. My Year 10 sci is in diff room each time and dynamics change. Have to plan around that
For sure. I let mine plan their classroom space on Google Drawing - they planned and learnt skills. Win win!
What does fluid mean for you in a classroom?
A4 also sofa outside the class, ss can move to assembly area or other classrooms, principal allows to use his office
I do own a tv. I'm not saying "No Front" by the way. I'm just saying we need to think hard about why things are so.
I looked into that last school year, but didn't find any either. Keep me posted if you do! https://t.co/wCwZsUdgE2
A4 Our space needs to be adaptable so we've decided on wheeled tables that can be reconfigured easily, but haven't found any yet!
A3: Transitions - nothing like a song, finger play , quick game to manage purposefully
A4. My dream would be to not have classrooms at all and meet at a different venue every day to learn from?
Where do you fit the iPads?
A4: Our new rooms with whiteboard walls and whiteboard desks with wheels all make for flexibility in class focus
or come to school already knowing it? Or feel disconnected from needing to know it?
So what do Ss do with their classrooms?
A4 That’s what I always do! But of course you need to plan ahead how much time this moving around needs.
Yeah I have my own 'station' as well. Its where I dem, and cook. But Ss love when they get to use it!
A5 this is an area that I know I need to improve on -my questioning technique - i need to break the habit ad start new habits
A5 oh gee. If you can't question, you can only follow.
these kemp exclusives are flying off the shelves
A5: I give time for students to compose questions, pose them, and respond and/or add on to a peer's response. Amazing conversatons
yep... we have 5 labs, I teach Yr 10 7 times... I teach them in each lab (1 twice) & a non-lab
A5: by problematizing learning goals and embedded them in authentic scenarios. I use a PRoblem Based L cycle to scaffold
Thanks for an inspiring chat. Getting a little late here in Aotearoa NZ for this BT. Have an excellent week all!
What are your classes sizes? Does the gym room provide ample space? Is there such a thing as too big?
A5: I try to encourage open discussion and questioning. Everyone has a voice and we use talk partners a lot
Hiya Brett! I've been in & out-late night last night-in need of lots of coffee this am. :-)
See you Soon!
A4. I have cushions from KMart - cheap and easily moved for floor time.
I think also removing the ‘classroom must look a certain way’ factor is so important. Let them move furniture to suit the task.
A5 I rarely answer ?s w/ statements or answers. Generally I ask more ?s or give an alternative scenario 2 consider
never take i don't know as an answer! Get the answer and get it repeated by the
you see them come in with dread
+ A4: My classroom has learning zones, each with their own focus. High tables are used to ensure we are at a similar eye level.
Most of the tables in my classroom are round. I like it that way. But teachers get little choice over which classroom they have.
more frustrating in a traditionally set classroom
Collaborative learning spaces and focus learning area-rarely individual areas.
I want my Ss to tap into the collective genius.
A5 - Always mix it up. Whiteboards, Padlet, GAFE, Hands up, ball throw, open discussion, debate, Kahoot, Slido, write & read
A5 question everything, encourage Ss to question
A5: allowing them to come up with questions. This also assess whether they understand the content enough 2 create questions
yep, I often get kids to come up too, same reason. Love the view as it has a step up.
A5 following students interest and lead to facilitate and capture the teachable moments is a focus for me in special ed
At uni this semester ran tute in classroom with whiteboard walls!!! Should have them in schools!
Kids hate that so you know it's good!
A4: Managing space and seating...engage students, build it together, plan collaboratively and strategically.
A4: Here's a crazy thought why don't the Ss design the space?
A5 I love asking 'why?', 'but why?' & 'are you sure?' - they make faces at me & then curiousity enters in. https://t.co/DMLYlGc19U
Q5: Ideas - How do you use questioning and discourse to get the best out of ALL of your students? https://t.co/KRMlaliOw5
A4 Little evidence to prove that furniture increases outcomes. Key is for the Ts to be flexible enough to move it to suit the task
my Yr 11s are creating a that will become part of their topic test for this unit...
Question formulation through scaffolding, conceptual lenses.
A5. I always have the rule - ask three before you come and see me!
Ohh. Fancy. A step! I just have fire...
Questions need purpose. They need to help students interact with new knowledge
would be boring of we didnt..and prob be still in the caves.. LOL
in an old IT lab once a week. That becomes videos and me talking... only way that room works is doing stand up
I rarely use the whiteboard anymore, but since I share rooms everything still points towards it MORE >> https://t.co/nqnzZMj8YY
A4 I have to see everyone. They can be in a circle or square, but I don't like when they hide. MORE >> https://t.co/nqnzZMj8YY
It makes a huge difference in terms of their engagement IMO.
very much so! But hopefully it frustrated the teachers who followed me. Refused to change them back!
Not much! Together with their class teacher, they decide on seating and how tables are set, etc. Sometimes they decorate
The whiteboard gets used by students more than me. The windows also get drawn on a lot. Writing everywhere
A5. Identify class experts and encourage them 2 lead discussion in their areas of expertise
A5: Use a backchannel for questioning, Ss had to come up with three per discussion, had to use different levels and answer others
yes! I am also into brain gym , and more recently discovered cosmic kids yoga on YouTube , a way to settle young kids.
A4: Should I ever become a Principal, standing desks will be ordered immediately; thinking and moving!
A5. The person doing the talking is the person doing the learning - question effectively so you can shut up & get out of the way!
could mean being seated, on the floor or switching seats/tables. For some it might be standing, depends what works.
We've been evolving our flexible Learning spaces . Tables and chairs move around constantly https://t.co/qe6GtPOrGW
Student voice in education? A novel idea https://t.co/EKdhguGOGE
A4: Here's a crazy thought why don't the Ss design the space?
.Tch 5 & 6 yr olds so dev ?ing as many don't know how.Use kiplings 7 servants what when why etc & solo taxonomy for Inquiry
A5: Padlet is an awesome answer board for a posed question. Ss post answers. Gives think time and ability to see all answers.
A5: Start with a statement. Learn qstng technqs from phil, econ, logic. Practice, encourage, model. Kids know the thinker teachers
A5: Being in a PYP based curriculum, questioning and inquiry is everything. Let them question, let them inquire and discover.
a lovely idea! Definitely opened up collab learning spaces in my room too!
A5: ST I let Students deconstruct the standard instead of me doing it. They form their own essential ?s & design learning pathways
yep - my non-lab class is our online simulation lesson... when the wifi reaches those rooms! LOL
A4. My catch cry is "move the desks to the side of the room - we're doing maths!"
A5. By painting beautiful art piece with language and asking for students interpretation?
Great point Charlotte, the purpose of learning blows away the focus on learning.
long as we keep learning in classes, subliminal mess'ge we're giving students is everything else play. Need to change that around
A4.1 when I was teaching, I LOVED when Ss would lay down on the floor (I had carpet!),go in the hall, push lots of desks together.
A4: Here's a crazy thought why don't the Ss design the space?
Ah, yeah. So a personal choice kind of thing. I like that too (sometimes)!
A5 any Q is a good Q -if you don't ask....you won't know/find/think/challenge/ask another Q..
This is the first year I haven't got direct access to the outside. Gee I miss it
A5 - Encourage Ss to always question the question - using peers as a bouncing board to improve learning
True! This young man has entire conference table w/ super comfy chairs 2 himself-needs space!
A5) We let our curiosities and questions guide our learning
they block FB?
Wow.. Twitter is were all the teachers are anyway.
The practice should drive the space not the space drive the practice!
Nice Zeina, either is problematic in both short and long-term.
A5 Recently asked parents to fill in a Google form to come in and share their expertise when the need arises based on questions
A5 let them take the lead and create that higher order thinking. We go off on so many tangents I love it
haha only because you are in attendance Brother
A5. Praise and reward clever answers - it encourages other Ss to think deeper.
A5. Role playing helps build discussion because by going thru the motion prompts more ?s
Thanks for following Kevin, looking forward tweeting with you
A4 I asked, "What was your ahaaa moment?" Students answer on sticky notes and post. Also did this on LMS.
Good old elaborative interrogation
A4: The furniture and the kids move into different spaces and configurations every four weeks, it shake up the room.
Yes, if at all. If even physically present, may not be completely present.
A5: Depends on the class. Some classes I explain what's going on and then give them 3 Qs as a class. Makes them think.
A5: I use Qs at critical points in the learning to either go backwards or forwards depending on the responses.
I like the classroom atmosphere this way too
I am working with a faculty that is letting me make-ify one of his grants
A5 let the activity go where it goes and asks targeted question throughout
A5b - always allow Ss to ask questions. How else do they consolidate their own learning
A5 discourse must be open and transparent. Curriculum isn't a secret just for teachers.
You are too kind. Thank you.
A5. In an ideal world - Open ended which allow student voice and agency. Letting them go beyond to create new ideas
Same here, reduces the tension in the classroom.
A5: I think collaborative online spaces are an effective way to give all Ss a level voice is discourse from Ts & Ss generated Qs.
many times i just leave them in groups only to find them moved back next time arrgghhhh
A5 we create, analyze, choose, improve, celebrate questions together; ss questions drive inquiry
Next question up in a moment!
A5 Risk taking is encouraged - this makes questioning and conversations meaningful
It will be a great day when they take full ownership
i have the no wifi in the science lab... works for IT folk because they have better wifi antenna
A4: Timetable = many different rooms. The classroom in my mind has collaborative whiteboard tables though https://t.co/akLRnk1Cek
A5 In order to get the most out of questioning... students design their own and seek the answers they need.
A5. Enc Ss 2 seek experts in community & connect via tech i.e. Skype 2 participate in discussion & prompt more ?s
The handsomest man in Texas. How are you doing brother?
Does this really happen in our schools today? Given poor funding models? https://t.co/NFVvCjNJWw
The practice should drive the space not the space drive the practice!
A5. In maths, sts are used to being questioned when wrong. I love questioning sts who are right so they convince themselves
We use 'restate', 'add on' & 'challenge' so all students have to contribute. As well as the trusty paddle pop stick!
A5: Sometimes, as many as they need. Some Qs save me time so I'm happy to answer. Sometimes its better S learning to say nothing!
A5: questioning is the most important tool I use to get the most out of my students (& Teachers) --> https://t.co/a3A7fimnSt
that is because we are brothers from 2 mothers
I've always wondered. Do you go home with marker all over your arms and clothes?
.I do too but call them learning buddies. Have them in my class & cross class Snr Ss wth Jnr Ss. Don't they work well.
Some Ts are against change
A5: provide S with the ability to go deeper with T facilitation, expect them to challenge each other's thoughts, refocus as needed.
A6: I will never master the art of teaching, I will just keep challenging the thinking and better my practice.
I have quite a lot of spare places to sit/chairs so I can usually sit down with a group too
im sure the Ss lived it mine does!
Thanks for letting me jump-in. Very early in the a.m. here in Pennsylvania. Have to go, but really enjoyed learning with you

True ...very difficult in what Marion Dadd's called "the hurry-along curriculum" (Pollard 2002:173) A5 https://t.co/4Vv5jjIawO
A5 dialogical approaches are powerful but need more time
A7 Also ask after you have done it!

Pity to have missed the chat tonight. I'm really interested in the idea of understanding practice as if it is art. Will read back.
are we nearly done already? My ribs have another 8 mins to go...
I had a lecturer who only asked why? Over and over. Drove us nuts but had some great discussions
A7 The ability to abandon a lesson that isn't working and start again a different way
Its funny how some Ts are uncomfortable in 1:1 with Ss
now your talking!!! LOL , I'll go with that one..have reinvented myself many times :-)
Totally agree - sts don't remember the facts we teach them, they remember the kind of character we displayed
Night all Thanks for your sharing - I have been liking tweets non stop! Have a great week and survive report cards.
Q8: With 21C approach, have we lost some of the focus on things that teachers do to make it all work? https://t.co/XCTN4Gn6yr
thanks :) it's pretty powerful stuff
A7 listen and reflect its essential
Absolutely! Prepare Ss to be the next generation of compassionate global citizens.
Love the sound of it. How cool would it be to write on the walls. My Ss would love it
Dear - You're crashing my computer =( =) =o
never sorry :) just i won't do that again!
A7: See every student as an individual, with unique needs, gifts and talents. Tailor the learning to each individual student.
A7: being humble (guide on the side rather than a sage on the stage) honest and I luv telling stories as examples 😀
purposeful & playful - I like it! Makes me wish I had my own class again 🙆🏻
A GIF strategy? Does that come with a GIF policy and a GIF implementation procedure?
That's why they live at the front! They see classrooms as teaching not learning spaces.
I have 30+ Ss in a classroom. I want flexible seating, painted walls & a charge station! Budget is tight https://t.co/9eF7DMefpW
It really needs too. Why force teachers to operate in a space that is not efficient for their practice? https://t.co/DB6c1upXsh
Does this really happen in our schools today? Given poor funding models? https://t.co/NFVvCjNJWw
The practice should drive the space not the space drive the practice!
Love this. Relationships are so important
A4: As collaborative as possible while still managing to keep focus on the teacher, no matter where I am in the classroom
LOL, I reckon the research goes on 7year loops too:)
A7: flipped learning. I can be everywhere and reteach to those who need it. Check out my Swivl video on flipped learning
A7: Failing in front of Ss. When they see u unsuccessful & trying again it empowers them to take risks https://t.co/jtkrRTAUHs
Q7: What is one small skill, approach or hack that is essential to your own practice as a teacher? https://t.co/Mx2tStLTIJ
read David Thornburg's 'From the Campfire to the Holodeck' explains campfires, caves etc brilliantly
A7. In such a tech reliant class it is great to unplug and encourage students to work in a third space
Yes! Relationships are key-honesty 2. S's R smart-they know when we R lying/trying 2 pull a fast 1
A7 If I can't answer a student's Q, say "I don't know, but let's see if we can help each other find out the answer then share it."
A8 naaaaah, we're still doing it - just from a different perspective! :)
A7 Find a colleague(s) who will always have your back when the going gets hard. Nothing beats good advice!
A8. If by 21C approach U mean the audit culture that we exist in, then yes I think this has changed the focus 4 sure
sometimes I post gifs in tweets just to watch how people interpret them with the text
Suck it up buttercup :) You love it.
hey have you spoken to between Memes and gifs - you two have it covered
Listen its so important. If you listen you help students academically, socially and emotionally
what a great idea!! will definitely aim to bring wonder into my classroom
great chat! If you are looking for blended writer's workshop- a new product from and coming for Aug!
A8: I think we have more tools to help us document all we do to make it all work
A8 I think we have lost some patience , are a bit more angry & even though more connected globally are less connected personally.
A8 Perhaps but we still have to provide opportunities for leaners to have experiences e.g.
A7: Listen as much as you speak
A8 We are only seeing the duck gliding over the water?
haha I teach Y10-12. They aren't keen floor-sitters either.
finding those 2 minutes to speak with a Ss and get to know something about them = Priceless
nice come back. You have to have a gif committee first before any action is taken
use the q's 'what am I teaching? How am I going? How do I know? How can I improve?
A8 I believe we are in a more collaborative, creative place to help each other out. As a profession this makes 'us' work better
A7 a small skill is to ask" what makes you say that" often, as it gets MORE S's thinking out!
A8 No the focus has shifted back to the students. To be our best as Ts we have to put their best 1st. https://t.co/RWAHr9Ft4o
Q8: With 21C approach, have we lost some of the focus on things that teachers do to make it all work? https://t.co/XCTN4Gn6yr
the front is wherever the teacher is
A7: Flipped videos also a great method for freeing up time free ad-in for PowerPoint - do yourself a favour!
A8. To teach Ss, Ts need to keep learning, too. We train Ts to implement cutting-edge & global collab
I would like to add lollies to that genius bar my friend! 😀
Certainly tech has helped us achieve this, but do we still work in silos (classrooms) at a school level?
A8 I hope not. That would mean more boxes to tick.
A7 by putting the Ss 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th and then putting everything else after that! Ss our core business
Have we lost it or are people getting lost in the wrong pedagogy?
Hahaha! Yeah, I do. But, my computer actually is running like a snail on valium rn
I believe pretty much the exact opposite of this. The front is wherever the students are.
A8 So long as the focus remains on the students...
We have a small group that debrief on Friday's. Great to bounce ideas and digest the week.
A8. Learner-centred doesn't always mean learner-led. There's a time for us to be sage on stage, guide on side, & mentor in middle
A8 talk of 21C skills frustrates me. It's 2016! We need to focus on what works best for learning rather than what's shiny.
my GIF game is stronger when I'm on my phone! Can't on a mobile device LOL too fast
My computer just died a wonderful death. Hopefully temporarily. How's that for timing? On my phone now
That just made me laugh right out loud Rob!!!
Thanks Rob, have a great week everyone, stay passionate and best wishes finishing your reports:)
A8 I think if the Ts is 100% hands off, there is something wrong. I like the idea of teacher driven, student-centred classrooms.
A8: I think we are so adaptable to current thinking that teachers are able to maintain good balance and focus.
