A1 Instruction designed in a meaningful way to meet individual needs.
A1) I love using data, but hate hearing "DDI" Left a school that was too focused on it and left the kids behind. Gives me shivers

A1 It means you have data to give your decisions direction. Not just shooting from the hip or doing what we have always done.
A1: Teaching what is BEST for my students, even if it means teaching to the test, but I will make it meaningful!
A1: Utilizing the trends indicated through data to guide instruction into a more focused area. https://t.co/6KFatnrTu9

A1: analyzing data to identify areas of strength/weakness & targeting those w/research-based instructional strategies.
A1: It means we need to make sure we are collecting the right data, and do it efficiently.
A1: I returned from class seeing everyone going into the large lecture room with the TV link.
Yup! https://t.co/U7ZEZtVUYE
A1: If you test your students over a specific standard, and they don't do so hot, figure out why, and then approach it differently.
A1: Look at all collected data as a starting point for instruction
A1b: I'm actually a little depressed that I won't have the validation of my Eng 3 EOI this year.
A1: Instruction centered around regular formative checks for learning and the goal of identifying and attacking struggle areas in Ss
a1 elective teacher here. i want to be stabbed in the neck when i hear ddi.
Meghan Bender, Union c/o 2018 AP. Senior in Kneafsey's AP biology class at Union HS 15 yrs ago
A1: To me it means data can be overwhelming. Sometimes there is simply too much. The data you use must align with your vision.
Use information from some kind of assessment 2 improve the instruction that you are providing your students https://t.co/8dHDniTXgw
A1 First you have to have systems in place to collect good data....
A1: Actionable data modeling cross-curricular vertically aligned Bloom's taxonomy SMART-goal PLC metacognitive ZPD Marzano formatted
Teachers that do the same thing on the 5th day of every school year are missing the fact they have different kids
I love all of the different perspectives!
Oh good grief I totally missed the ?'s up to this point. :(
A1) When I hear "data driven instruction" I think, my instruction drives the data. Don't be reactive, anticipate & adjust.
a1 and depends on who is saying ddi or distributing the data
data can be good, high stakes and test driven not so much
A1- Teaching 4th grade. Can't believe it has been 15 yrs, my girls were babies! #9/11memorial https://t.co/8ZE3jVPtCs
A1:IMO 🚫🔫 Teaching to the average rather than the individual
A1 Data driven means that you reflect on your instruction by looking at whether it's working... it's design thinking in action!
A1 Use information from formal and informal assessments to teach specific skills to the specific Ss who need it. Intentional focus
A1c: Used well, it can be awesome. Used poorly, it hampers creativity and learning.
a1: Data does not always = test scores. It could be verbal answers/behaviors from students.
I dislike "driven". I'm data informed. Data doesn't drive me. Data comes in lots of packages. #? I'm off already!
Tried something new this year. I asked my Ts what data they needed to improve instruction. No reply yet. https://t.co/VgLwUcP88w
A1: To me it means data can be overwhelming. Sometimes there is simply too much. The data you use must align with your vision.
Collecting data so you can say you have data is not good! Been there and done that! https://t.co/GTHQzQ4XjF
A1: To me it means data can be overwhelming. Sometimes there is simply too much. The data you use must align with your vision.
A1: It means that it is not student driven instruction & not focusing on the interests, talents, or career choices of Ss.
A1a Data driven instruction is part of the instructional plan but not all...sometimes need to look beyond the data.
A1) Assessment, Analysis & Action.
A1: As Tchr: Gr/assest - lrning/instr.; As Admin-ABCs, Attend, Behav., Classwork, to determine at risk, DirTech: effective .
A2: You can't keep moving forward if your students are stuck.

For those of you who are not familiar with he is summed up by w/ this https://t.co/kLPbUrwIOB
haha he's like a train wreck. Literally. LOL
A1 teaching based on the needs of the students.
A1) If the data is quality, having a roadmap to make teaching and learning decisions.
A1: Teachers knowing where their students are starting, and making a plan for where they want to go using actual numbers.
A1 We may not like the phrase & feel data is overused, but in order to be most efficient & effective it has to be a tool in the box.
I’d be interested in hearing how this goes. I’m definitely in line with the concept.
I like the term actionable data. Sometimes there can be too much data and you don't know best direction
A1)DDI to me means that I'm probably in a meeting. Which means I'd rather be in my classroom with my Ss who don't use such language.
A1 "Data" has a bad connotation; I prefer "using evidence to support why I do what I do" & can be anything, not just numbers
A2 good data tells you where there's room to grow...
A2: It's just another tool. Don't waste time teaching what they know. Focus on what they don't. https://t.co/uW73Z9LsdR
a2 data is like the proof. must acknowledge its place
A2 it makes you focus, can mean you are focusing on what the Ss need instead of your misperceptions of your effectiveness
A2 It's the same reason we prototype and test our products...if it's not meeting our goals, we need to tweak it!
look for she's asking the questions
A1: if used right data allows us to see who gets it and/or I didn't teach the concept very well.
i love to collect data with response and monster lab games.
A1) it depends on the data
A2: No data, then it's the blind leading the blind.
Sherri Pankhurst. Dir. of Curr. & Inst./ETIS. A1)Being "Data Informed" helps finds strengths and weakness. Data driven can be tricky.
A1: doesn't have to mean walls full of test scores.Just use hard evidence to inform what you do next.Shldnt be meaningless # crunch
A1) Strategies based on research
A1 educational audit to determine where educational energy and efforts will be utilized to strengthen weaknesses.
A2: Using data is fine. Let objective reality factor in to your perceptions and gut feelings. BUT (and I have a big BUT...)
A2: Good data makes things comparable (like ACT scores), so effectiveness can be seen
A1) Where did the data come from, is it current, is it valid, is it meaningful?
A1: I hate the phrase. Data and research should inform our practices, but students should be the drivers of instruction.
A2: Data helps you understand which Ss need enrichment, reinforcement, or remediation...it also allows you to pinpoint the need.
A2 What are you basing your decisions on if you're not using data? Sometimes we don't realize the data that is right in front of us.
Just because we use data does need change the fact 'the teacher is the most important variable in the classroom"
Well...true...but when I think of it this way it makes me want to puke! https://t.co/9TgYxbSnY6
A1 teaching based on test results
I'm still waiting. I've asked twice and it's been over a week now. I'm going to let it play out...
A2 Use data so that you aren't spending time on stuff kids have already mastered.
A2 Data creates a switch from focusing on teaching to focusing on learning. I'm just a talking head if the Ss aren't learning it.
A2: It's too easy to let data become the straightjacket - the GOAL. It's not. Paperwork is not the goal either.
A1: usually the best data is that collected by classroom teacher (or instructional coach) as it is usable and student specific
A2: So let's just say that I don't use data. Unless you count the kids sang it wrong as data.
A2: We need thoughtful decisions. You can’t be Doc Holliday out there. Decisions should be based on thoughtful, reflective evidence.
not sure i've ever heard anyone i know actually say that. thank you
A2b: What drives my instruction...making beautiful and meaningful music.
I do need some type of measure on my teaching. Sometimes what I thinks is going super great….isn’t…
https://t.co/zbMbMLI5sY
A2: Good start, but doesn't replace the art of teaching, to inspire, to engage. People before process.
A1) It means I have a tool to help tailor my lessons to my Ss. But it is only one of many. I prefer to stay student driven, thanks!
I like data-informed decisions better https://t.co/ADvLc384eB
A1: I hate the phrase. Data and research should inform our practices, but students should be the drivers of instruction.
A2) Data can show what is working with students. We should always be evolving with out teaching but proven facts should be a part
Teaching 4th grade. Can't believe it has been 15 yrs! Visiting the 9/11 memorial w/ my girls this year. https://t.co/3ysQW5L6Dn
A2: Data should be used to drive instruction so it benefits student learning. Look at stand & assessments https://t.co/C5dZ3tCNcZ
A2. Data helps you know if students have learned the intended & if the students need a different approach
A2: you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you are.
I'm beginning to think that their non-answer is the loudest response I've ever heard. https://t.co/gPFxIIjkJC
For me that's easy - what do my 8th graders know at this point, today, and we'll go from there.
Reflection is the key! Self reflection! https://t.co/weIch5ANJN
A2: We need thoughtful decisions. You can’t be Doc Holliday out there. Decisions should be based on thoughtful, reflective evidence.
Data is a tool I can not figure out why some people refuse to use tools even when it benefits kids in
A2) Allows you to not spend time teaching what students already know and move on
a2: The alternative is not using data and basically "winging it." Students deserve better. data helps us track growth.
can someone RT ? 2 please?
A2) I wouldn't trust Data to drive anything! He lacks the human emotion that I need in a driver. Kirk maybe. Definitely Sulu.
Anyone else's spouse answers the questions out loud, but never tweets it them? That's my beautiful wife !
A2: IMO data can drive your small group, it's one of many ways to focus instruction in a classroom
A2) Like I tell my Ss, why should I teach what they already know? I want to keep them growing.
A2) Your S's data is 1 of many measures that indicate if you're doing it right. But don't stress if it doesn't always match up.
A2b: Data is not the enemy, but how we use it can be...data should be used as a pillow to support rather than a hammer to bludgeon
A2: to make sure I am not wasting my time, spinning my wheels, and doing everything for grins and giggles https://t.co/A3h4L6gyB6
you're using data. It's just a different type. Would you keep singing the same song over and over if it was perfect?
Teaching 4th grade. Can't believe it has been 15 yrs! Visited the 9/11 memorial w/ my girls this year. https://t.co/BTsFiL1k8P
Yes, just one of the tools in the tool box! https://t.co/rgaDnfYUcf
A1 We may not like the phrase & feel data is overused, but in order to be most efficient & effective it has to be a tool in the box.
A1 I was home with a sick child. Watched on TV all day. Coaching football at Dickson. Tough day of practice that for sure.
Let’s take a second and note that data isn’t always in numbers.
A2: Not sure you should, certainly not automatically. But it should be strong input to figuring what works. https://t.co/udmmo8zAZS
yes. So glad you say that !!!
Q1 if we aren't using assessments to see what kids need and addressing those needs...what are we spending extra time assessing?
A2) To have an accurate starting point, to understand what they know or what misconceptions haven't been answered/ addressed
A2: Gathering data helps keep me from chasing too many rabbits at once.
The ? not the answer please. :)
A2: To be more efficient in allocating time and resources.
Just because we use data does not change the fact 'the teacher is the most important variable in the classroom"
and where to put them in that seating chart...your data just looks different than mine
A1) Personally, I like the sound of data-driven legislation in Okla. more...
https://t.co/qg9l4DEu7G
A2) Your S's data is 1 of many measures that indicate if you're doing it right. But don't stress if it doesn't always match up.
A2: b/c not using data to drive your teaching is like coaching a team & ignoring all of your players' statistics when game planning
A2 - T's need FREQUENT assessment to give you data to determine S understanding and weather or not to reteach
Sometimes the problem is the people pushing the data in a given situation. Sometimes they're a tool also ;-)
A3: I've never been keeping a good balance kind of person. So...any advice would be appreciated.
A3 I remember who I'm here for, it's my Ss.
A3)It's only a war if we allow it. If, however,we affirm that reliable sources are informing our curr & inst, our students will win!
A3: Effective teaching proves itself in the data. "Authentic" instruction's effectiveness should prove itself too.
A3: We have to first learn to be classroom facilitators before we worry about data. That a teacher’s toolkit foundational piece.
A2 You should use what you know about Ss to drive instruction. If you crazy kids want to call that data... https://t.co/mYs4brKC0C
Data should be one way to check your teaching. It should not be the only thing you focus on. https://t.co/RoT16IE9zj
A2b: Data is not the enemy, but how we use it can be...data should be used as a pillow to support rather than a hammer to bludgeon
A2) To pinpoint areas for instructional emphasis… "A roadmap"
A4) Why a war? I can still teach in a way that's best for my kids while using data to help guide what I teach.
a3: These don't have to be 2 different things. Let T's decide what is the most relevant data to collect and decide how to use it.
I like this https://t.co/RXG8dCplwb
A2: b/c not using data to drive your teaching is like coaching a team & ignoring all of your players' statistics when game planning
Amy Presley with Broken Arrow High - I'll be in & out tonight
A2: Data is part of the answer & should not be used as the answer to drive instruction. It's all about the repetition of skills.
A2: a way to make instruction personalized and differentiation intentional
Information from formative assessments, activities and simple observations certainly helps plan my skill based groups!
Are data-driven instruction and authentic mutually exclusive? Maybe I don't know the right definitions?
TY . Its not all about spreadsheets of data like kids are market shares. Data isn't all evil https://t.co/Ce8azi1VnG
Let’s take a second and note that data isn’t always in numbers.
because some T's don't want to self reflect on their teaching. Some are scared, some don't want to improve
A3) balance is the key! Can't ignore either
A2 In science, data = evidence; evidence drives growth & revision. Don't see why I can't apply the same logic to teaching.
I'm already thinking we're hearing VERY different things when the term "data" or "data-driven instruction" is used tonight.
How do we balance data driven instruction and authentic instruction? https://t.co/QwHUizcTct
A3: I've never been keeping a good balance kind of person. So...any advice would be appreciated.
A2: Data should be a guide. I should be able to veer off of the path if I choose. It tells me the background of my hikers.
A3 Why can't it be authentic and facilitated yet still based on data?
Balance is in the hands of the Teacher. We improve schools by improving teachers not adding programs or changing standards
A3 the balance should be in the data we collect and use
https://t.co/khSfXzKCky
A3: I've never been keeping a good balance kind of person. So...any advice would be appreciated.
A3 There's a lot of confusion on how to effectively use data in the classroom...I believe we need more PD on reading/using data!
you do stuff - your data is different. How do you get your kiddos ready for their auditions? You use some form of data
EXACTLY! It's a tool to make us better..but is often used as the whole picture rather than just a snapshot! https://t.co/DDzEcQQT7K
Data should be one way to check your teaching. It should not be the only thing you focus on. https://t.co/RoT16IE9zj
A2b: Data is not the enemy, but how we use it can be...data should be used as a pillow to support rather than a hammer to bludgeon
A3: You have to personalize the data ... cause no one ever made a difference in the life of a spreadsheet. https://t.co/XvSKqxj7RL
A: There is a time for both approaches in the classroom, using both will capture all students
A3) I think our best teachers do both...
A3: Ts should use both! Authentic instruction informed by data so we know each Ss individual needs & goals
A side note here: IMHO, any effective teaching should not be questioned - but it should be obvious in the data
Pardon the hiking analogies..this time of year.
A3: Just TEACH and everything else will fall into place as it should!
A3) Sometimes you close the door and teach, go where yuor kids are taking you and ignore the data
A2: Data is good & a great part of the toolbox, but often gets misused when $ gets involved
A3 it's all about meeting the needs of the kids in front of you--you use every tool at your disposal to take care of them.
A3 You balance by creating an authentic lesson that is necessary based upon the data you have on the students in your classroom.
I do. I plan it out very carefully and we singing all the stuff!
https://t.co/8gqtlsfnqq
A2: Data should lead a T to guide an S to success. 4 me, I needed to know what books my S would read 2 know how to lead them 2 the best ones
A3 why the debate...Data can help us better design and facilitate authentic learning opportunities. Use data as part of refection
A3: Talking about data before you’ve learned the basics of teaching is like asking a kid to care before you’ve built a relationship.
Agree! They seem to go hand-in-hand, but some Ts have trouble seeing it. It may takes leaders to guide them.
A3: I find it helps a great deal that I have no idea what this means. Therefore, I'm comfortable with the current balance.
A2: using data helps me remained focused. Students daily needs may take precedence, but data can bring my focus back when necessary
a3 sometimes my data is 'how many times did my head tilt when that kid played that piece of music'
A3: "The numbers work for me; I don't workcfor me" Jeff Mermin, PhD, OSU#=
I'm late but I'm in. Sorry Agent Light.
data is a tool not a teacher or admin. You may not like the data or want to see it but need to
Data can b used to start the conversation with S's&P's to give feedback toT's on strengthening areas or addressing demographic needs.
A3) You've got to be a mad scientist and find the right combo that works with your students.
Bobby Blackburn Cordell @ Sherri_P
A3 I've seen excellent Ts do amazing things with kids and they didn't know any of the terms we tend to use in Ed. Hmmm.
You beat me to it...Dang you BCE https://t.co/zyVYblwQax
A3: I find it helps a great deal that I have no idea what this means. Therefore, I'm comfortable with the current balance.
I think this is an area where the right PD could help as well!
A3 S's didn't get concept X, create an authentic situation involving concept X for S's to work through?
A3: Give a benchmark test in August, practice & repeat skills throughout the year, & give another test in May.
Data helps me differentiate my instruction. We don't all learn the same at the same pace. I rely on data as a tool.
A3 I don't see them as mutually exclusive and one is not superior to the other. We need to use everything in the toolbox.
Teaching 4th grade. Can't believe it has been 15 yrs! My girls & I at the 9/11 memorial this year. https://t.co/fNF5vYvsXs
I've seen it misused, & that is dangerous, but when used well - we get better
A2 Data helps me know how to plan and assist students.
Yes! It's too easy to ignore inconvenient facts / reality. Just b/c too much focus is bad doesn't mean ignorance is good.
I agree... Use data to help with the direction and then create authentic teaching and learning experiences. https://t.co/ylhlx2OJpa
A3 Why can't it be authentic and facilitated yet still based on data?
A3: Sorry, some honesty. Most Ts and admin do not have the trng 2 accurately evaluate most data. Analysis is rife w type I/II errors
A3) teach, reteach what you need to, give kids what they need to be successful; stop stressing
We have to make sure though that the assessments are relevant and authentic. To ensure it's accurate data. That is key.
A3: for me they work together but I am talking about weekly data not state testing or even district testing https://t.co/xizXmAG3T1
A3 We cannot forget that we are here primarily for the reason to ensure that our students learn & have the tools to succeed.
A3: "The numbers work for me. I don't work for them." Jeff Mermin, Ph.D Mathematics, OSU
that comforts me as a pre service teacher who often doesn't understand these terms
A3 - data is not always spread sheet, use fist to five rating, tickets out the door this can give you quick data on S understanding
Gotta run . Thank you for moderating Have a great week everyone
A3) I always figured "authentic, facilitated instruction" also included data driven methodology. https://t.co/ZfnP9fkhV4
A3b: In most cases, we simply do not have adequate information to make attribution. So, we make a lot of guesses.
A3: integrating formative checks quickly/efficiently & looking for ways to tie personal style/passion to lessons based on standards
WE HAVE A WINNER, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.... TWEET OF THE NIGHT! https://t.co/EBgPwQSqMJ
A1) Personally, I like the sound of data-driven legislation in Okla. more...
A3b What we don't need is more computer-driven expensive diagnostic tools.
A4: "that sounded terrible. Do it again." Data collected.
A student can spend 5 minutes on a STAR test and should I use that data NO! So it has to be an authentic assessment.
A4: #1 way we gather data is from walkthroughs, also use assessments, teacher feedback, and leadership team.
I was teaching 4th grade. Can't believe it has been 15 yrs! My girls & I at the 9/11 memorial this year. https://t.co/w2gql4RNid
A4) I love getting data AS I am teaching!
many or most teachers that ignore or fight data just want to teach what they taught on the 25 day last year
A3:Good Ts consistently use data 2 know where ea S is. I don't mean spreadsheets. Data can b much less formal yet effective
A4: I do a variety of different things. For me it depends on what I'm teaching.
A4: All of the above and add "spidey sense." the blank stares, rolled eyes, and drool on the desk.
Teaching is subjective. Let teachers love how they teach (c) Students will learn. Learning is not cookie cutter.
A4: Make a connection and observe. I can see if they're struggling or coasting if I genuinely know them. https://t.co/zfLv8RhR1C
That's one perspective. Another is that Ts are tired of useless assessment that provide misleading data. https://t.co/9Y15So0Dgk
because some T's don't want to self reflect on their teaching. Some are scared, some don't want to improve
A4: Data comes from anywhere I can get my hands on!
You're rocking it tonight. Ha! I think I've retweeted everything I've seen you post.:)
A4) Common assessments since we are not benchmarking this year as a district.
I think it's the "frequent assessment" that's often the problem.... it becomes the primary function. https://t.co/GCgNBD6AIx
A2 - T's need FREQUENT assessment to give you data to determine S understanding and weather or not to reteach
A4: I use a lot of summarizing and paraphrasing using complete sentences and including an analysis as data
So true! I think this is why using data gets perceived negatively.. bc of how it used. https://t.co/AD6bxmz2jj
A3: Sorry, some honesty. Most Ts and admin do not have the trng 2 accurately evaluate most data. Analysis is rife w type I/II errors
I also think that many Ts don't know how to use the data effectively to adjust their teaching, etc.
You hit it on the head - multiple sources to get a broad picture. A single snapshot is bad juju https://t.co/jOX44aSjkT
A4: #1 way we gather data is from walkthroughs, also use assessments, teacher feedback, and leadership team.
A4: Love me some frequent checking for understanding! Apps like and are great resources (and fun!)
A4 observations and interaction with students every single day
I use data to give myself feedback and look for holes in my teaching. I never sweat the data. ever.
We must ensure that we are utilizing what we collect to its maximum potential. We can't assess just to say we did. Time is precious.
Sorry I am not joining tonight. Resting from celebrating my birthday all weekend w/family & friends. See u next week
A4 STAR, teacher records...
A3) Data, to me, isn't just . It's empirical evidence as well. Data-driven is important. --But Ss aren't programmable robots.
With accessible knowledge comes another tool, but that is what is, a tool to be used with wisdom gained https://t.co/Lkq4ihy3Xq
A4: I create my own assessments. Ss are giving two minute speeches using a form of tech. In April, it will be 10 minute speeches.
Assessment is my favorite subject :(
A4: Make a connection and observe. I can see if they're struggling or coasting if I genuinely know them. https://t.co/zfLv8RhR1C
A4: I prefer formative assessments that, when used correctly, minimally interrupt learning & provide groves of VALUABLE data for Ts.
Or tired, over worked, and overwhelmed https://t.co/IKX4qMr1hi
That's one perspective. Another is that Ts are tired of useless assessment that provide misleading data. https://t.co/9Y15So0Dgk
because some T's don't want to self reflect on their teaching. Some are scared, some don't want to improve
A4: Wrkng w/ Ts to use authentic CR assessments this year. Will compare to stand/obj & S lrng. https://t.co/IRW0HAqqQB
https://t.co/6YibTLnFNq
A4) Data comes from form/summ, but most importantly knowing your Ss and their learning styles and collaboration with colleagues
A4 formative assessment, observation, formal assessment; you name it. I'm always observing and assessing, even if it's not formally.
A4 The best data comes from observing what students can and can't do. Eyes and ears. Eyes and ears. https://t.co/M6aC01aAfN
Many or most admins that focus on data just want everyone to pass so parents and the state get off their backs.
a4: If you have access to instructional coach - they are trained to help collect various types of data to + student achvment
A4: Will I be cyber-bullied if I say Google Forms? It's a tech nerds best friend :) 'tjudgeme
You're on a great Twitter chat to learn new things! Glad you are here!
https://t.co/HOwaL39BZp
that comforts me as a pre service teacher who often doesn't understand these terms
Doug Brown Supt jumping in late after a night shooting guns with the family
True! The expense seems to escalate every year, but some are truly beneficial. Ts forget they can be a diagnostic tool.
A4: In grades 2-4 at we use STAR and Alpha for classroom small group instruction
A4: I mean, anytime I ask my kids a question I'm collecting data, maybe not the type I can put in excel... https://t.co/btTx8xv2ic
A3: kinda struggling w/this.Data shldnt b an enemy. Most good Ts use data more than they may realize. What items were missed? By whom?
And the #1 thing you can give back to teachers is time. I always try not to waste it.
A4b: I assess every single day. And my precious little song birds/wackadoodles don't even know.
A4 a how do you choose? I like fist to five for a quick check, Google forms for quizzes, tickets out door https://t.co/8vY5l5RagZ
A4) learning how 2 write 3d assessments & its blowing my mind. I gather data continuously- in many forms but not always assessments
I'll try, Hydra had me a little busy. But we prevailed...
a4 i feel fortunate teaching music - it sounds like the national anthem or it doesn't. that's it. then i address the skill gaps
A4: What was helpful for us, was getting Ts some release time each quarter to analyze their benchmark data.
A4 STAR, teacher records...you can't rely on one type of data. Know your students, helps give perspective when looking at data.
A4: Does it tie back to a learning target? Then it's up for grabs how it gets watching. "Just because it's what I like" is no bueno
A4 important- formative assessment may not involve S's taking a test. Formative assessments can happen w/out S's even knowing
A3 I think the "war" is due to fear of replacing authentic teaching when really it's a tool to help guide
We're not playing Tetris or trying to match paint. We're teaching life forms in constant flux.
A4: STAR, alpha, seems like I'm always assessing. More than I'm comfortable with.
Yes. Same. https://t.co/alHoiKhwYA
A4b: I assess every single day. And my precious little song birds/wackadoodles don't even know.
Vendors rarely sell us things we can't do better, and cheaper.
right!!! They did it right or they did it wrong. Nothing in between.
A3: possible to do what's best for kids and still focus on data because even an interpersonal moment w/ an S can be invaluable data
They're hanging out with all those teachers refusing to change based on data.
oh man - i like you - you should hang out in more often!!
A4) I watch what my Ss do. That includes all of those, their responses in class, their actions, their work, their play. All of it.
lol, that's why it's important to constantly get feedback! That's all data is...feedback.
Let’s be careful with that admin box.
A4 - I don't feel like quarterly benchmarks are successful. Should be checking more often. Lots of wasted time - 2 day tests
A4 can simply walk the room with a list. Check off for each kid, can do or can't do. Formative assessment done.
32 years of teaching experience right on target
There are more frightened deer or zombies? Time to try another approach. That is data driven at it's basic https://t.co/ywwRq3w8MY
A4 important- formative assessment may not involve S's taking a test. Formative assessments can happen w/out S's even knowing
Well, I mean, they're right there in the room. I talk to them and everything. Where are YOURS? ;-)
We can all talk about the data we collect, but that's not what our stakeholders want, right? Their data is more... numerical.
Absolutely! Attentiveness is key.
My Ss and I love ! https://t.co/gyywLTqzoP
A4: Love me some frequent checking for understanding! Apps like and are great resources (and fun!)
a4 data = audience. if they clap we've done well. if they throw babies then we are amazing!
A4: As a teacher, I never sat down. Interact with every child every day. That's the best data you can get on your instruction.
A5: Holistically - an assignment that was designed to cover one specific standard might put people to sleep!
You know what...I like you too! And I think I will hang out with you fine folks a lot more!
I will not say they do not exist but let's not let be defined by the bad apples https://t.co/hUDvITNtpe
They're hanging out with all those teachers refusing to change based on data.
T's are my Ss and you can bet I'm always collecting data, informally or formally, so that I can improve! :)
A little bit of everything, some programs for hard data and as many observational data notes as possible to help best understand Ss
A T must be able to engage their audience or they will struggle to teach them anything. https://t.co/DnMTsqepas
Absolutely! Attentiveness is key.
A5) depends on subject, students, standards, etc
Agreed, but at what? Regular re-assessment, or something occassionally a bit grander?
A5 - Most standards are not designed to be taught in isolation - However unfortunately some are assessed in iso.
liquids spewing from my mouth and nose :D https://t.co/hG62VyTDEa
a4 data = audience. if they clap we've done well. if they throw babies then we are amazing!
If all are completed in isolation, you may have trouble covering them all.
my wife is a reading spec. She always tells me the best way 2 know how well S' can read is by listening to them read...
Data should evoke efficiency. Teachers should be able to readily access it and make use of it: https://t.co/VpbsB9DVNp
A5: Depends upon the subject oftentimes, but holistically is always better IMO. Creating a memorable experience takes up more space.
A5: Holistically! I mean there are some that I teach in isolation, but I prefer holistically. Knocking out many birds with one stone
For the record, I'm not at ALL against using data to guide instruction. But too often it's treated like every other 'silver bullet'.
A5 Holistically! Tie it all together in a meaningful way, often based on one book or topic.
A5) Very few things can be explained in isolation. Our math standards, for ex., are best taught bundled.
A5: Depends on standards at play. Content? Skill? Multiple hits when you can, isolate the ones you know are harder to get
A4) It's people not programs. Ts use a variety of both formal & informal data sources. Not evrything has to be bought!
No better way to check for understanding, interact with them and the information you want them to learn. https://t.co/2j3lNpZTul
A4: As a teacher, I never sat down. Interact with every child every day. That's the best data you can get on your instruction.
YOU JUST SAID TEACHERS WHO RESIST DATA ALL WANT TO TEACH WHAT THEY DID 25 YEARS AGO. ?
A5: I just teach kids how to sing. It is a little difficult to do that in isolation. It is all connected in the circle of life.
Yes! Often a misconception when driving instruction with data. https://t.co/fPgNQQGZLA
If all are completed in isolation, you may have trouble covering them all.
A5) The standards compliment each other. I bring them together as much as possible to help Ss see big pic.
A5: Teaching English is very recursive. I only isolate when I'm introducing or reinforcing a concept. https://t.co/2Zeup4fn8c
Data is about being self-reflective for possible weaknesses in ourselves & our instruction. Data is scary to many people that way.
A5: I try to teach my standards cross curricular. If possible. That way they see the purpose in different ways.
A5: Standards should be taught collectively (short version). And they should be assessed meaningfully, with feedback.
🙌🏻🙌🏻 I like the way you think!!!
It's a bit of an overgeneralization. Maybe they just they resist all the data meetings and tools.
great minds and all that :-)
A5 I would imagine standards would be learned better holistically
yep https://t.co/1w57d7Due2
Data is about being self-reflective for possible weaknesses in ourselves & our instruction. Data is scary to many people that way.
A5 Kinda depends but if S's know we are just teaching standards we are in trouble any way. Make it authentic!
I started off seeking to moderate our use of data and somehow ended up on the far Luddite end of the ditch opposing all feedback....
A5: Holistically for sure - often without standards even discussed / identified: Ss choosing response to ??? https://t.co/lC3wxJUMLs
This may be one of the best chats. Great Qs! I'm learning a ton.
very true but can't pretend bad apples don't exist if we want true changes in in every aspect of schools
When we are defining vocab words in science or SS from the text, I LOVE asking them how they got that and they say context clues.
Can I come back to "let's just keep some reasonable balance" part of the discussion?
A5) standards taught in isolation = boring; engage students in real life ways; make it mean something
Feedback!!!!! Not just a grade! Conversations! https://t.co/NAwKfH8axI
A5: Standards should be taught collectively (short version). And they should be assessed meaningfully, with feedback.
And I take that data each year and want to make myself better and know my Ss can do better!
The problem many educators have is when data is used to judge or grade teachers "you do not have to be bad to get better"
a5: This looks like students transferring knowledge of standards to solve real-world problems, -
A4 Daily form assess = read over Ss shoulders, ease drop, sticky note answers, just ask Ss what they learned Ts will find the holes
I think if we focused more on feedback we would focus less on how many grades we take.
A5: I always explicitly taught a standard as a foundation then taught it cross curricular
because being reasonable is asking to much.
the possibility of needing to try something different. Fear of the unknown.
A5: ELA standards should not be taught in isolation. Literacy skills involve more than just reading. Ss need to discuss & write.
A5 Ah, isolation- the bane of education's existence.
A5: With ELA stay with holistic assess. Most ELA Standards N ISO cause us 2 lose the richness of the language and lit we study
A5: In History, all skills are cumulative and overlapping. We can focus on one, but you really can't isolate them.
A5) I think complicated (in science abstract) ideas start out in isolation. They have to understand it before it can be bundled
A5: Reading skills I've been finding I enjoy teaching in isolation, read a text w/ one main standard to focus on mastering that day
Blanket answer: All the data and data meetings in the world won't make sucky teachers less sucky.
Authors don’t write with just one adjective, noun, and adverb. We shouldn’t teach language that way either.
A6: None that I know of... Well, we had remediation for the EOIs, but nothing else...
. Huge! What's the point in spending time evaluating if "good to great" isn't an option. https://t.co/c2XHb9GNeA
The problem many educators have is when data is used to judge or grade teachers "you do not have to be bad to get better"
Who cares about GRADEs! Do they know the info. Yes I know, the parents and S's care about grades https://t.co/V149kY98xp
Feedback!!!!! Not just a grade! Conversations! https://t.co/NAwKfH8axI
A5: Standards should be taught collectively (short version). And they should be assessed meaningfully, with feedback.
A5: If standards were a pastry, would u want the flour, yeast, sugar separately or mixed/baked into yummy goodness?
a5 skill before technique is how i learn. but not every kiddo learns like me. must differentiate.
A6: The kids who don't get it come in and we talk about what they didn't get. They try again.
Woohoo!! Understanding perspective is key to continuous growing https://t.co/itb3l7zZ8s
This may be one of the best chats. Great Qs! I'm learning a ton.
some standards don't lend themselves to real life situations.Too many standards limit time thus limit the depth of teaching
Standards determine topics for driving questions - never form a list of topics for presenting!!! https://t.co/rFKmbglmBX
A5) The standards compliment each other. I bring them together as much as possible to help Ss see big pic.
Not unless you tie in some job-embedded - needs based professional development...
A6: This is where looking @ good data can come in useful. Look @ T assessments, class work, stand/obj. https://t.co/7EGWlXZtGd
Whn lrning something nw 1 step at a time. Thn we strt using all of those other mving prts. Math is like tht https://t.co/L39ipjbbmv
A6: In my class-we sing it again. School wide we meet as teams and talk about kids.
a5 the teachers that broaden my perspective most are those that teach technique before skill
Yup! https://t.co/Qkk7dMR9fK
Authors don’t write with just one adjective, noun, and adverb. We shouldn’t teach language that way either.
If data informs a standard is not mastered, it's okay to target certain standards in a differentiated setting.
Gotta say - good teaching is intrinsic assessment & it happens without necessarily graphing it. Data's made stale by scripting it
Q6: Reteach them in every subject we teach, show Ss the standards are not isolated to one subject area
A6: Response to Instruction (rather than intervention)..give enrichment & remediation at the same time (no pulling from electives!)
A6: We should reteach standards, but should repeat the standards. Every unit=build upon what was learned & add something new.
Our first donut reference of the night. It took 42 minutes! https://t.co/IuMMMy8oEZ
A5: If standards were a pastry, would u want the flour, yeast, sugar separately or mixed/baked into yummy goodness?
A6 can be difficult w/a lack of resources.
A5) Yes. Isolate, then connect, then mix as many as I can because that's life! :). Sometimes it's connect, isolate, connect again.
Jennifer McKay. princ okcps - joining late! Hub on 1 phone helping College soph with HW - I'm helping the Jr! ✌🏼️💙📚
A6) Reteaching in small groups in class, intervention hour, skills group hour, lunch, before/after school, email, google classroom.
"Teaching corps of Oklahoma public schools is simultaneously becoming smaller & less expert in its tasks" https://t.co/w2HwKDBD30
'We wouldn’t called it a paradox. We’d call it a tragedy,' editorial on teacher layoffs/shortages, https://t.co/80INSBzp2U
Data doesn't make me a good teacher. I can have the data you request. My students may hate me though. Don't forget relationships.
A6: I just keep at it until we get it. Our school has before and after school tutoring as well. https://t.co/s85oXmFKci
I think we overstate the value of PD too. If the T doesn't choose it, the T doesn't value it. https://t.co/56oM7ENNuU
Not unless you tie in some job-embedded - needs based professional development...
depends on the grade you are teaching, I suppose. ❤️
A6 - should probably reteach in a way that was different than round 1. The first time didn't work, change https://t.co/tIq24Ksj81
A6: 1st reateach must take place in the classroom asap. After that, you need a place for Tier 2 intervention...more support.
A6 reteach by spirally standards. Intentionally returning to reteach and deepen understanding.
A6: My Ss can also come see me at anytime for extra help! We also have after school tutoring.
2 yrs ago discussing data would have made me see RED! Data meetings focused on state testing w/little regard 4 meaningful learning.
Couldn't agree with that more! Voice/Choice are probably 2 most important factors of PD... 1:1 coaching > trad. PD
buy-in on the how/why of data is absolutely critical!
I did not say donut anywhere in that tweet! 😂
A6) We are blessed with the flexibility to do what it takes!
Definitely a good point, I have them discuss or write about whatever specific skill we're focused on https://t.co/BDxbhlj6ux
A5: ELA standards should not be taught in isolation. Literacy skills involve more than just reading. Ss need to discuss & write.
how would you accomplish both? Build in an enrichment/remediation hour?
A6:reteaching will look differently for different kiddos -depends on what data & T experience says works best for individual student
We don't use it in my school but want to. Wifes school does. It is a paradigm shift.
A5 Bundle those standards! Way more fun that way & start with a phenomenon that makes them say "hrm..." For example....
A6 hopefully when we reteach or use interventions we teach it in a different way. Same way again won't make change.
a6: I like the LOUDER and SLOWER approach... (jk)
A6: built in time for 30 minutes to remediate...not perfect, working to get better but thankful for time https://t.co/iD3W9Ewm8K
love you writing so much!
A6) Methods that are different from the original teaching. Depends on the Ss and the material.
The issue is with the meeting not "DATA" https://t.co/Lsw25C2nyf
2 yrs ago discussing data would have made me see RED! Data meetings focused on state testing w/little regard 4 meaningful learning.
Team approach using form asses, co- teaching, debriefs and FUN stud driven act. Principal is tchg and planning w us! Teamwork A6).
Look at me. Saying I'm just going to observe. I just can't help myself.
or more importantly, what are you doing with that data? Keeping it in your desk or using it to teach?
Doing what you've always done and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. https://t.co/d6ym4De1pC
A6 hopefully when we reteach or use interventions we teach it in a different way. Same way again won't make change.
A6: All Ts are encouraged to remediate in-house as needed, and we also have amazing learning lab support w/ unit recovery program
Yes...always teaching & reteaching learning to use and apply skills. https://t.co/YTQJitiZTx
A6 reteach by spirally standards. Intentionally returning to reteach and deepen understanding.
A6: We have 45 minutes in our schedule four days a week for help or enrichment.
PD needs to be meaningful right? Or its a wast of time for everyone…
What a novel idea! (Sorry for the sarcasm, just wishing more/all teachers would see the benefit of this).
"Reteach" is doubly wrong in my thinking: (1) teaching anything and (2) returning instead of continuing. https://t.co/TcBsCDKCI7
A6 - should probably reteach in a way that was different than round 1. The first time didn't work, change https://t.co/tIq24Ksj81
only reason we have dead wood is we either hired dead wood or hired live wood & killed it.Deming
A6 cont: on a more personal level, when I need to reteach something, it's a reflective process- what can I do different next time
Shout out to & for participating in the chat tonight for professional development points.
A6:We have 30m targeted instruction time built in. Ss in groups devised by Ts based on their review of that week's learning (data!!)
exactly! Now I value the data because I can use it in a meaningful way.
A7: It's hard to imagine - at the secondary level - that anything 'schoolwide' could be useful as 'remediation'.
I never can remember if coined that phrase or if it was Henry Ford, or Einstein. Probably
A7) 45 minutes a day where we team up and target skills that need it.
A7: We call it Tiger Advisory. 45 minutes of targeted instruction. I get to do cool music things.
Agreed. is a genius that way. Now if only next week it were Seven of Nine...
donut. I see a donut. THERE IS A DONUT OVER HERE!!
A7A Can't give a blanket answer here, but we're moving away from making kids lose electives for remediation. https://t.co/9AwFD5YsvS
I try to teach the Ss how to measure for selves. "I'm struggling with Target 4b" is WAY better than just "I don't get it"
A7: Before and after school tutoring is a big thing. Some departments use Study Island as well. https://t.co/TWqk0SzdvJ
DATA isn't evil.Textbooks are not a problem; heck worksheets are ok. It is people and how they use these tools we are the variable
I think I missed two questions bc of my excitement over finding out something. Sorry .
A7: We have reading coaches, ELL intervention, after school tutoring in the spring
Exactly. Grade levels share students so each teacher can take the students who need remediation or enrichment.
I want to point out that a future teacher has shared every ? With me. She rocks! I am so thankful for her!
A7 we have a master schedule with rem times for each gr/skill level. Rd spec works with groups all day 🤓 https://t.co/6GSlw5n5Wr
Perhaps in subject area teams... sharing students.... but School wide seems tough.
A7: Tier 2 is 30 minute period at end of the day. Tier 3 is a Core & more class built into Ss schedule style.
A7: school has a very customized and flexible unit recovery lab that makes remediation much easier to manage for whole building 😎
A7 School wide RTI starts our day...meeting specific needs & working toward goals.
PRAISES!!!!!!! Kids SHOULD NEVER lose an elective! They need that time! For those kids electives is why they show up.
Trying! https://t.co/6HfhDXDg2G
What a novel idea! (Sorry for the sarcasm, just wishing more/all teachers would see the benefit of this).
That's good. Some schools exclude "non-academic" [sic] courses from these programs. https://t.co/ZoOzJwSw6w
A7: We call it Tiger Advisory. 45 minutes of targeted instruction. I get to do cool music things.
It's really powerful when Ss can track their own data and their mastery of the standards. https://t.co/EQewfVVpvE
I try to teach the Ss how to measure for selves. "I'm struggling with Target 4b" is WAY better than just "I don't get it"
A7a: after-school tutoring & during school day Math & Reading interventions
A7 we have had a math apps class as well as a reading class. Empty teaching positions have depleted those classes somewhat this year
I just missed Q7, so here is A7. We offer tutoring as well. .
so you hair leave kids behind?
https://t.co/QnhJ6QGKZR
DATA isn't evil.Textbooks are not a problem; heck worksheets are ok. It is people and how they use these tools we are the variable
A6) And... scaffolding! What's underneath what's missing? = key question to guide planning !
I've seen it done successfully & I've seen it flop horribly. Adult buy-in is key
Data driven instruction makes me think of remediation.
so you just leave kids behind?
A6: I don't reteach; I repeat. In every unit, Ss will have to read, to write, to discuss, & to learn vocabulary and grammar.
A7 introduced me to "WIN" Whatever I Need.Flex time during the day for S's to get remediation or anything else they need.
but I'm not a real teacher so what do I know.
A7) Have it built into our regular schedule 8th grade and down and try to make it a practice to not pull students from Pe/music
If it’s on a wall somewhere or a tear-away calendar, you can bet it was
Yes!! I knew I liked you for a reason. *note: there is no 'Hallejuah' singing emoji. I looked.* https://t.co/e41SE2eouk
A7A Can't give a blanket answer here, but we're moving away from making kids lose electives for remediation. https://t.co/9AwFD5YsvS
A7a we also have advisory as well as a working lunch for struggling kids
A6 Hope nobody says miss a recess or more homework!
A7: we have done a pretty good job with some pretty good data to support RAO in science at 7th grade https://t.co/XHgQ2I6pob
A7: It's hard to imagine - at the secondary level - that anything 'schoolwide' could be useful as 'remediation'.
I think I'm touchy b/c of how often "data-driven" has been code for "ditch all electives & hammer 4 cores until we pray for death!"
People either get that or they don't. And that's all the data I need on those people.
Continuous https://t.co/I3hQCwLJUm
A6: I don't reteach; I repeat. In every unit, Ss will have to read, to write, to discuss, & to learn vocabulary and grammar.
Yeah, but it's so much cooler if we just give the credit to Einstein.
Enid High School is proud to offer the state's first and only Youth Entrepreneurs program! ... https://t.co/BhJFqJuzWO
- There are bad apples in every profession https://t.co/ItF4vgotNf
I will not say they do not exist but let's not let be defined by the bad apples https://t.co/hUDvITNtpe
They're hanging out with all those teachers refusing to change based on data.
YES!! Why would we take away one reason some kids might attend school to give them extra time in a struggling subject?
I can't like this one enough!!!
A7b More great Teachers!!!!!
A7B: happy to say between extra remediation lab periods we offer and unit recovery that we have all needs pretty well met 👏🏻
Quality PD where Ts get to fully understand the wholistic process. Not scripted chunks or "now" imposing https://t.co/uhW00Fdfvj
Agree 100% all are neutral it is use, intent, and end result that matters https://t.co/pm5LoeCncA
DATA isn't evil.Textbooks are not a problem; heck worksheets are ok. It is people and how they use these tools we are the variable
A6 Still working on a best way but 4 sure don't give struggling Ss most boring, redundant way of doing it - they'll never learn
We have to remember we don't all teach at the same place so we all have diff feels when it comes to data.
A7b: I would like our Ts to let us know what they need to be successfu
The problem isn't Data driven it is the person driving the data https://t.co/Lh2DgQLf18
I think I'm touchy b/c of how often "data-driven" has been code for "ditch all electives & hammer 4 cores until we pray for death!"
If I can better understand my audience through data, then bring it on! We can use data w/o abandoning fashion & traditions.
"I love coming to school so my teacher can pull me out of Electives so I can do more math that I hate." https://t.co/scdfBJec5X
I think I'm touchy b/c of how often "data-driven" has been code for "ditch all electives & hammer 4 cores until we pray for death!"
A7b) More Ts, fewer Ss. Hard to get 'em all when its a 1:25 ratio or more.
A7 Ts have daily embedded teacher-led TI/PLC to review Ss progress, determine how to group Ss to meet specific strengths/challenges
I think it's this one 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
Remediation should never= loss of opportunity. Whether it be recess, art, music, electives... https://t.co/qlLLyuvSWB
A7A Can't give a blanket answer here, but we're moving away from making kids lose electives for remediation. https://t.co/9AwFD5YsvS
A7a grade level remediation with help from Title 1, aides, student teachers, whoever we can find to help.
definitely our perspectives on data are shaped by our experiences, good or bad
As a Dean of Instruction, we used an activity sched & built in time 2reteach pwr Standards In the school day. https://t.co/Wir9Tai40A
A7 Daughter's MS offers remediation same time as short-term electives in a variety of non-traditional topics. Great catch-up time.
or recess for the younger kiddos - they need to play and run around!
My goal is to make it on a poster like , arms crossed in a sweater vest, staring in the distance
no because that is insane. But yet it happens to Electives teachers all the time.
A7b I need our T's to stop worrying about test scores! Worry about what each S knows & doesn't & adjust accordingly.
Tried that here...be careful what you wish for. https://t.co/ao8NSAHgFR
yep! Have to have that 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading a day.
My goal on is to photobomb your poster.
A7B: You don't need computers or resources, you just need to know your kids. Teach. Rinse. Repeat. https://t.co/GkoNI6WIPc
ugh! I get the social promotion reasoning to a point, but more than 1 causes a repeated series of probe
Ah ha! In that case, 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩! And I believe you need this one today too. 🎂
A7 FULL DISCLAIMER - have not watched this - popped up during oklaed chat! Title seems A7ish imo. 🤓 https://t.co/nrXbHnYaBv
A7a Wish we had a meaningful study hr where Ss can choose class for extra help & it be diff each day/week based on need
Great chat tonight and Have an awesome week!
Data should change how teachers teach not punish kids
A7. Build it into your schedule. Every student works on something during that time. Hard to build the schedule but worth it !!!
Yes! "Support" an underused term! https://t.co/iRrltBvYSf
A7b: I would like our Ts to let us know what they need to be successfu
A7b: More 1/1 instruction with those Ss that need the extra help.
Leggies put admin in difficult position - with testing and grad requiremnts
The flip side are Ts that pass Ss along because "I know they get it, they just aren't good test takers". https://t.co/WjuaOdIL5U
I think I'm touchy b/c of how often "data-driven" has been code for "ditch all electives & hammer 4 cores until we pray for death!"
Parting shot: You can't do anything in your team or school w/o trust. Build trust and then watch great things happen.
A7B: of course it's always nice to have resources and technology, but make it about your kids and what will help them... Not the
Pulling out of electives is no Bueno!! Teaches kids to dislike core learning & feel unsuccessful https://t.co/4nwHH6N5es
"I love coming to school so my teacher can pull me out of Electives so I can do more math that I hate." https://t.co/scdfBJec5X
I think I'm touchy b/c of how often "data-driven" has been code for "ditch all electives & hammer 4 cores until we pray for death!"
Good job tonight !! 'Twas fun! Thanks
Is it odd that I hear the theme to "A Pistol for Ringo" every time walks into the room?
A7b: 💵. But since that seems to be unreasonable, I'd like my staff & I 2 think outside the box & create a more flexible sched/day
Relationships are built on trust and trust is built on actions. I said that once, but I’m sure it wasn’t original.
Simple this! Relationships among adults in schools matter! https://t.co/caPErFlS8U
Parting shot: You can't do anything in your team or school w/o trust. Build trust and then watch great things happen.
A8: We will sing. We will sing loudly. We will make more music. Because music helps kids see the beauty in such a harsh world.
A8: I don't plan on addressing it, I work at grades 2-4
Great chat on an over-emphasized topic (my words); need to pay attention to OUR students... Good night, Gracie!!!
We will never be as successful as we could if we try to punish knowledge into our kids. https://t.co/8sRoTlvh5J
Data should change how teachers teach not punish kids
A7b: Stop unpacking the new standards. Imagine an empty suitcase & filling it with standards that will help you create a unit.
the arts and other electives should never be cut.
