#LATICchat Archive

Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.

Good evening and welcome to #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:05 PM EDT
    Ok let's get started! #LATICchat

Hi everyone. Christina, 3rd grade teacher from Nyack, NY #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:08 PM EDT
    Hi Christina! #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:10 PM EDT
I love walking into a classroom and seeing and hearing students grapple with a problem! #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 25 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 I love the student empowerment that implementing problem based learning allows. If we want to build the 4Cs in ss there is no better way than engaging them through problems that are only solved by learning skills and content #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    Question2 coming at you! #LATICchat
  • teaching_bliss Oct 25 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Hi! 5th grade teacher in Florida. ELA and Social Studies. Mostly lurking tonight because tomorrow is a BIG day! 😅 #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Hi Elizabeth! Welcome! Excited you joining in an capacity this evening! #LATICchat
  • teaching_bliss Oct 25 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2- having regular home-group meetings with journaling where Ss discuss the task/rubric and how things are tying together #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 25 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2 I have a spot on my daily schedule that asks ss to reflect on something they learned/did that will help them solve the task at hand. This way they are at least attempting to connect their daily activities to the end task #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:20 PM EDT
It is so important to self-evaluate on the rubric and keep tieing back to the task! #LATICchat

A3 I try to build ef skills through the latic structures and gradually release responsibility to my ss through scaffolded experiences. I believe that my ss are capable and try to develop their soft skills so they can capitalize their potential #LATICchat

A1 I love the S's grappling and stretching boundaries when working on content and skills in an ALU that is PBL.Also the aha moments when they see the connections and applications to life. This is growth happening before our eyes. #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:29 PM EDT
    Hi Rob, welcome! #LATICchat

A3. Differentiation Through Formative Assessments, Mini-Lessons, and Centers. #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:31 PM EDT
I agree, the ahhas are so powerful and exciting! When the pieces fall into place and the kids are so engaged and feel so empowered it is truly amazing to witness! #LATICchat

Connecting applications is essential to building an inquiry approach. #laticchat

A2 I used home group journals for the first time this year so S's could periodically reflect on their previous thoughts and make course corrections on how they approach P's and designing solutions. #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Well David welcome and you lead us into Q4! #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 25 @ 8:34 PM EDT
How are the HG journals working?#LATICchat

  • nyackwiz Oct 25 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3 Pacing Guides, How to Sheets, T Cloning, SGML and Rubrics allow S's to develop autonomy and Executive Function. Also allows for more tailored T facilitation of learning. #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 25 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4 I love keeping my facilitation grid handy and making sure I’m observing the skills/content in action. Being actively facilitating I’m seeing what sgmls I need to run to either remediate/accelerate learning #LATICchat
  • teaching_bliss Oct 25 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4- I still love me some Kagan structures like quiz-quiz-trade 🙌🏽 the more I can hear them talking about what they’re solving/doing the better for me #LATICchat
  • nyackwiz Oct 25 @ 8:35 PM EDT
thanks sorry i jumped in late... #LATICchat

Feel like an old time phone operator directing my S's by plugging them into connections with content and S's and colleagues. #LATICchat

Let's get Giffy! Is that a word? Lol, anyway Q5 coming at you! #LATICchat
  • nyackwiz Oct 25 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A4 I still rely heavily on the dialog back and forth between T and S. Also T and HG. To gather information to drive remediation and instruction in PBL ALU's. I think with all the tech we often overlook good old questioning and conversation like Socrates. #LATICchat
  • nyackwiz Oct 25 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Love to use Fac. Grids and reference the different skills to the Rubric when meeting w/ S's. #LATICchat

A6 A challenge I have dealt with and still deal with is changing the S's mentality from compliance (is this right?) to Critical Thinking and a Growth Mindset fostered from a felt need. #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 25 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A6 authentic tasks that I can find a real audience for is tough. There are a lot of times that I’ve had great ideas but can’t find the right paths to execute them #LATICchat

Thats the strength of a thinktank or PLC to run ideas past each other and expand our own horizon's I love the LATIC LAB days for that. #LATICchat
