Thanks for joining us for part two of our series on ESSA and educator voice to talk about ESSA and ELA Thanks to @SJteaches & @SaraHolm15 for the awesome help on questions for this series. #teachNVchat
A1: Comprehensive Literacy refers to all parts of foundational skills-assessing progress ...having intervention in place for all tiers of need. Monitoring response to intervention... #teachnvchat
#teachNVchat, a1, literacy instruction that is standards aligned and focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking and focused on building the foundations of literacy.
Well, I tell my kinders that literacy is reading, writing, listening and speaking so that they know why we work on all 4 every day, all day. We're trying to advance all areas throughout the year even though some come in pretty chatty!! #teachnvchat
A1 Go back to National Oanel of Literacy, 2001. Includes instruction on phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding fluency, comprehension, writing genres and writing to text. #teachNVchat
I once got quizzed on the 5 elements of literacy during an interview. Under pressure I could only get 4 .... and didn't get that job. That year. #teachnvchat
The PBLs that @LintonRJ helps with at Smithridge STEM are such a natural and highly engaging way of integrating lots of standards from across the spectrum #teachnvchat
A2. “Good readers know stuff”. Where else to learn stuff than Sci & SS, art, music, PE? Read all genres and teach literacy across all curricula. I’d like to get away from content blocks. #teachNVchat
A2: Writing across the curriculum is easy to integrate,especially in journal or creative form. Arts integration into core subjects also develops "well rounded" skills #teachNVchat
YES-I've always wondered if there wasn't an ELA practices-know they aren't as clear cut as Math but we definitely need perseverance and problem solving #teachNVchat
A2 we incorporate science and social studies content in our literacy where students are reading, annotating, discussing, making sense of content, and producing something that showcases their new knowledge: Socratic Seminar, Toastmasters, Ever-Changing Map, and more! #teachNVchat
If you put the Anchor standards next to Mathematical practices, hi can find similar language throughout-explaining thinking with evidence... is one. 😊#teachNVchat
#teachNVchat, a2, all teachers/subject are foundational based, all historians, poets, journalists, scientists, mathematicians had to have a foundation.
A3 the best authentic assessment is one the students come up with on their own volition, student voice and choice will keep it moving forward all year, the results will be reliable because they aren’t forced or extracted #teachnvchat
and the foundational skills that we're learning about in the @achievethecore mini course. They're the ... foundation ... that all kids need for future success! #teachnvchat

@BDicksonNV, @averyteach, @achievethecore
A3: remember that "assessment" even for writing, doesn't always have to look like a test or paper. PBL, creative writing, writer's workshop, interactive journals can all be assessment. #teachnvchat
#teachNVchat, a3, teachers working together to develop assessments that meet the standards, we need to know where students understanding is based on standards and built supports to help them to succeed.
A3 Best Assessment would integrate all facets of learning. And not memorizing!!PBL or passion projects, over a long period of time. Scoring info essays for our SLO. I’m blown away by what our 6ths learned! #teachNVchat
