New Twitter chatters: format is Q1: “question here”. You replay with A1: "your response". Don't forget to include :)
A1: Feedback is formative--offers insight into strengths and areas of growth.
I understand praise as being stagnant, where as feedback allows for improvement and growth encouraging a growth mindset in students
I like that! Great insight. https://t.co/PINUjxIDT0
A1: Feedback is formative--offers insight into strengths and areas of growth.
A1: Praise is always positive. Feedback can be positive or negative, and it's to drive growth, improvement.
A1: Feedback builds on what students know and can do--> specific reinforcement for desired behaviors, strategy use, etc.
A1: Praise and feedback are similar in the way that they both can serve as motivation for students.
A1: Let's get something straight: feedback is not the same as praise and vice versa.
A1: Feedback is constructive. "Great job" is an example of praise but not feedback!
Praise should be given when earned, but feedback should be constructive & meaningful to help students meet the learning goals
Oh wow!! That is such a great reflection. Really says a lot.
A1:descriptive feedback targets Ss performance
The purpose of feedback is to drive growth--right on!
A:1 I believe feedback is more constructive teaching were as praise is more of a boost for doing something right
A1: Praise feels good but has nothing to do with improvement; feedback, however, is capable of launching a lifelong journey
Excellent reflection. I am impressed with the way you have presented it. :)
Giving feedback = providing an evaluation of Ss learning. Praise = telling something positive. Sometimes they overlap, not always
A.1 Praise should be given when earned, but feedback should be constructive & meaningful to help students meet the learning goals
So true! And yet each have their plus and minus, right?
I believe they are different, "praise" is approval and "feedback" is an informational response to a task.
A1: Feedback is intentional and constructive. It drives teaching and learning. This is how teachers get students to exceed.
Feedback is more complex than praise and is more likely to result in student success
How can we create opportunities for praise and feedback to coexist? When are either appropriate?
A1: praise is easy to offer but descriptive feedback propels ss thinking
Yes! Agreed...and so it can begin to be problematic.
Intentional is such an imprtnt element of feedback. It's too easy to give Ss empty praise!
Oh yes...I love your question. Thoughts? https://t.co/IhDBD1QcSw
How can we create opportunities for praise and feedback to coexist? When are either appropriate?
Sam Wallace, 1st yr high school social studies ! Popping in and out tonight
trying my best to give intentional feedback this year - the only problem is that it's so time consuming!
Q2: Are there any risks inherent in the use of praise? Can it be overdone? What should we be careful of? https://t.co/CmZlgtrZPD
I worry about offering too much praise. It is so subjective--dependent on who S wants to impress.
praise is a natural routine for teachers, however the overuse of it can lose its value to students.
Great insight, thanks for sharing with me
Praise should be genuine & used when Ss are truly doing something great/FB should be specific/short & used to push to the next level
A2 - It can cause unneeded stress on Ss who feel the need to exceed expectations next time; the extra pressure can be detrimental
A2: Praise can be a form of extrinsic motivation and should be used wisely and strategically
Exactly! Thats why we are talking about it...our perspectives are so needed to support the New T.
A.2 too much praise can lead to a loss of value and sincerity, as well as the positive effect it can have on students.
A2: Praise is externally dependent & can discourage Ss from self-reflection, self-determination, and self-assessment.
I feel like this is situational, and that I use praise with my students more for behavior than with assignments
A2 Praise for sake of praise & overused is what's detrimental. FB isn't just for push, also to reinforce. Keep both evidence based
A2: Make sure you are not praising for following basic expectations. Acknowledge in those cases. Save praise for awesome moments!
I like the aspect of "strategy", we really need to know our Ss and how praise can affect them differently
A2: praise benefits the giver and is extrinsic
A.2 praise should be present, but not overused, allowing students to see the value in the great work they accomplish
Self-assessment is such a critical component to extending learning for the Ss!
A:2 It's important for the students to understand their mistakes, some praise is good, but teaching should come first
Interesting...your perspective is great. I have seen this happen in kids that I've worked with. https://t.co/SzApuQkL9p
A2 - It can cause unneeded stress on Ss who feel the need to exceed expectations next time; the extra pressure can be detrimental
A2: The overuse of praise can lead to a loss in its value to students.
A2 Praise should narrate the positive and detailed.
A2: Fostering a positive environment paves the way for student success, but praise should be carefully doled out in moderation.
it subject specific, I'd hope to encourage students to want to excel in all areas. "great effort" rather than "you are good at math"
A2 Praise equally so not to spark jealousy but YES, it can be overdone! Be a selective praiser, then its expected.
Thanks! I can relate to it, happens to me occasionally especially when the praise comes from someone I highly respect
So true! Praise can lead to--> perfectionism, for others, causes them to worry they can't live up to it.
Yes...its a slippery slope right? That's why I love this topic!! ;)
great insight! I'm learning so much from you both.
Praise is subjective-students may lose motivation if they see peers constantly receiving praise when they are not
or the worst one "you're so smart!" Always have to promote a growth mindset
Amen!! This is such a great revelation!
Likewise to both of you! Looking forward to future collaboration, learning and sharing!
Such an interesting way to describe praise--a narration of the positive!
So true!! I used to make this mistake as a mom! https://t.co/zMBlAT0nyx
or the worst one "you're so smart!" Always have to promote a growth mindset
Make sure to spread the praise - can't always be the same Ss. Praise Ss for different things - character, academic, behavior, etc.
How true is that! It can hard for Ss to be persistent if they see the praise going elsewhere
perhaps the language that is used when praising is important, always encouraging students to strive for more? just some thoughts...
This is great advice!! https://t.co/lcdsqXrsFl
Make sure to spread the praise - can't always be the same Ss. Praise Ss for different things - character, academic, behavior, etc.
Q3: How can we work to ensure feedback is effective? (What makes good feedback?) PLease share! https://t.co/6cLaea6kK8
It is tought! Try developing a few FB stems that you can use to begin sentences & complete them w/specific details.
A3: Specifics! Tie it back to evidence. Timely! Don't wait so long they can't use it. Actionable! What can they do now?
A3 - Always follow thru & follow up with Ss! Keep track of future progress & monitor student growth. If they struggle, re-evaluate
Amen to that!! I love this! https://t.co/yN0WVHnWaI
A3: Specifics! Tie it back to evidence. Timely! Don't wait so long they can't use it. Actionable! What can they do now?
TY! This is a meaty topic. It's great to be learning together!
A3: Great feedback is timely, accessible, ongoing, and related to a goal
A3: Make sure you give Ss time to review, process, & understand your clear and short fb. Allow Ss time & support to implement it.
Three excellent elements to remember!
A.3 effective feedback is timely, goal oriented and personalized to the student, subject and task at hand
A3: Feedback is helpful when it informs both students and future instruction
Such. Awesome. Ideas. Love it! Especially "timely", it's no good for anyone if it's not prompt & meaningful!
Time...this is critical. Time to process...so important.
A2. be sure to accept the correctness; but overpraise can lead to jealously among the class.
A3. Always check for understanding and follow through!!!
A3 My principal says we need to educate mistakes, not punish them, which reminds me of appropriate feedback!
A3: I believe good feedback is something the child & parents understand, doesn't hurt them but clarifies expectation.
Woot! Follow through is key. We fail to model good habits when we don't. https://t.co/MQxJ3MWWwY
A3. Always check for understanding and follow through!!!
Dropping in to say hi to my friends at ! Love this convo about feedback!
Dropping in to say hi to my friends at ! Love this convo about feedback!
Goal oriented and personalized...perfect!!
thank you so much for the tip! I'll give it a try 👍🏼
Love the aspect of making sure they understand. Too often teachers can speak "over" people & create conflict/confusion
A3: I try to include a statement of pos reinforcement (something Ss should continue) & a teaching point (area of targeted growth).
A3 Feedback is feasible, detailed and relevant.
provide feedback that is actionable (facts/info) with next steps for students to take in order to meet their goals
Student performance reflects on your teaching & instruction. Providing Ss w/ feedback will ensure success in the future
A3 Feedback should be doable or actionable, as well Ss need time to work on it , just chiming in
A3: As my friend says, "write more, grade less." Make sure feedback informs students, not grades students.
thank you for hosting! Unfortunately, it's time for this teacher to go to bed.
Howdy Friend!! Great to see you here! https://t.co/Abm2YfWE5n
Dropping in to say hi to my friends at ! Love this convo about feedback!
lol! No worries! It's so great to have had you join us. Many thanks!!
Q4: Do most kids come to school already believing they can learn, without extrinsic motivators? Yes, No? Thoughts?
A4 I would say much depends on their background. If they were raised in a supportive environment, maybe, otherwise it may be tough
I am!! Join us more often. ;)
Agreed!! I was good at being a support to my biys and sent them off confident, Not true in all homes. :(
family home-life and culture definitely influence this!
Have to bow out of a little early, but thanks for a great chat. Keep up the great work, and feel free to stay in touch.
No worries! Great to have you here!!
Such a sad aspect of schools, thankfully Ss have caring teachers who want to help!
A4: Unfortunately, it largely depends on how they've been taught to think. "I don't know" vs "I don't know, yet."
A3: Sometimes the school system discourages Ss from believing they can learn. We "grade" their self-confidence out of them.
Sorry! A4: Sometimes the school system discourages Ss from believing they can learn. We "grade" their self-confidence out of them.
The power of YET!! This is awesome and I want new T's to know! https://t.co/L6oQg3LTLM
A4: Unfortunately, it largely depends on how they've been taught to think. "I don't know" vs "I don't know, yet."
After a few technical delays, we expect our highly anticipated podcasst with leader to be released within an hour!
It's so important to remember how many variables that they come into the classroom with
Getting to know students can help in planning teaching/learning that meets their needs, always adjusting to support them
I first read about the power of YET in Carol Dweck's book, Mindset. An important read for all Ts!
OMG!!! I'm excited! Can't wait! https://t.co/t9LAvBGE51
After a few technical delays, we expect our highly anticipated podcasst with leader to be released within an hour!
Why that learning, for that child, at that time?
Thank you...I so agree!! https://t.co/9o03EhelOv
I first read about the power of YET in Carol Dweck's book, Mindset. An important read for all Ts!
A4: My baby came to school expecting to learn, she'd say "I'll wait till kindergarten to learn" always playtime before that
A4: Started out teaching preschool & saw the belief/wonder/curiosity. Sadly, that often fades, & we need to help Ss develop again.
YES!! As a former Kindergarten and Pre-school teacher, I so agree with you. https://t.co/11in8Z1liU
A4: Started out teaching preschool & saw the belief/wonder/curiosity. Sadly, that often fades, & we need to help Ss develop again.
You all have been so AMAZING!! We won't have time for Q5 & 6 but maybe in a slow chat throughout the rest of the week?
So, the real question is, how do we keep curiosity and intrigue alive as they progress through each grade? https://t.co/CyuVHSRWgJ
A4: Started out teaching preschool & saw the belief/wonder/curiosity. Sadly, that often fades, & we need to help Ss develop again.
