Q1 We hear the word innovation a lot these days! What does it mean?
Hi Kevin from Pike High School. Sorry I'm late
Evening Kevin! Never too late for chat!
R1) Thinking about and doing things in new and hopefully better ways.
There's no such thing as late for , . Good to see you again!
R1: Innovation is outside the box thinking. Blending different subject matters together in the classroom
R1: To me it's a mindset, a willingness to think differently, to be wrong and fail and then to adapt and try again.
Absolutely. Better ways to improve learning & experiences for kids!
Love that. Having the mindset of innovation is the 1st step into making it a reality!
Hello Curt from Seymour tech teacher
R1: Innovation and collaboration goes hand in hand
R1) improving by trying something original
Hi Curt! Great to have you with us!
R1: Designing new methods, imagining new ideas, seeing problems, creating meaningful solutions
R1: innovation is growing from methods you are using now and improving based on experience and new tools
R1: Adapting to our Ss and learning right along with them. Our world is always changing. We need to keep up!
R1 Innovation is not just doing things in a new way, it's a transformation of what existed before
R1 being confident enough to try something new with out knowing the outcome
R1: Innovation is on-going change. Never ending thinking!
or be the agents of the change!
Keyword: meaningful https://t.co/xGZJhTm5aa
R1: Designing new methods, imagining new ideas, seeing problems, creating meaningful solutions
R1: it is also taking risks for the benefit of our students. Not being afraid of the "crash and burn"
LOVE THIS!!! https://t.co/xtKdohYtnd
R1: Designing new methods, imagining new ideas, seeing problems, creating meaningful solutions
Sounds like iteration https://t.co/7ghJDnkDW1
R1: innovation is growing from methods you are using now and improving based on experience and new tools
R1: Daring to try something new, experiment, learn, correct course. Growth mindset, pushing the envelope
Q2 Why is innovating in our classrooms/schools important?
I love how you added the experience part here. Experience adds a new perspective.
R2: Education is stagnant without innovation. What worked in the past doesn't always work today. Have to raise the bar
Amen to that! https://t.co/THuxkDNnJ6
R1: Adapting to our Ss and learning right along with them. Our world is always changing. We need to keep up!
R2: It keeps students awake and thinking.
R2 correcting the course! Stealing this to respond to Q2 WHY we do it in our classrooms/schools https://t.co/DLx9TWLiOl
R1: Daring to try something new, experiment, learn, correct course. Growth mindset, pushing the envelope
R2) Society is constantly changing - jobs, tech, etc. - so have to innovate to keep what we're doing relevant to Ss.
R2: Our students will face major challenges and we need to help prepare them to face the ones we can't even imagine yet.
R2) So your S's have a chance to compete with other S's.
Leveling up a notch. Thinking differently & acting on it.
R2: Because Ss need to learn how to be changemakers, to see deep human need, to iterate and define success beyond a grade.
R2: Our Ss will walk into an uncertain world. We need to model for them ongoing learning and a willingness to try new approaches.
R2: If we never evolve, reflect, and improve we will be preparing ss for our yesterday, not their tomorrow.
Yes! Today is different than yesterday. Tomorrow will be different than today. Change is inevitable. Embrace it!
R2: Without it, we stay in the same place and the world passes us by. It helps us keep growing as professionals & helps engagement
R2) because jobs 10 years from now are going to be different from any that currently exist.
And how boring would it be to keep doing the same things year after year.
R2 Innovation is a sign that there is active learning at play if we expect it from our Ss, why not us too?
R2 Ts need innovation to combat becoming stagnant in the classroom not only for St's but themselves as well to prevent burnout
YES! Learning beyond the traditional confines to build their future! https://t.co/dRjnnLeIA5
R2: Because Ss need to learn how to be changemakers, to see deep human need, to iterate and define success beyond a grade.
Boring!!! No place for that in our constantly changing world!
R2: It's bringing learning to life for our kids instead of throwing a worksheet at them to learn material from.
Recurring theme in my class. Munster HS is right across the river. My Ss competing vs. Natl Merit Scholars for jobs.
those jobs won't just be "different"...they're jobs that doN'T exist YET today!
Q3 What might hinder innovation from happening in our schools?
Shudder! Even my favorite projects with Ss varied from year to year-building on ideas https://t.co/WQJUf1Ydkp
And how boring would it be to keep doing the same things year after year.
R3: time, effort is teachers, lack of technology, $. All of these are capable of being overcome.
R3 Presumed rules! We can't do X because of said rule. No. 1 innovation killer
R3: Time, money, and mindset. Ts need more time to innovate and not be afraid to give it a go.
R3: Fear. A culture that isn't supportive of making mistakes along the way.
R3: The death knell refrain of 'but we've always done it this way' Ugh!!
We innovate why, how, and what we do so that we build thinkers and creators. Ss are our future. Plant seeds for them to grow!
R3) $$, fear of failure, lack of vision, lack of buy-in, and tolerance of the norm.
"Future" being the key word. Beyond college. To participate in a workforce that values skills you can't test.
A3) Fear of failure, lack of administrative support, worry about poor evals or drop in test scores.
This idea has to go! It is such a downer
it's amazing what a difference mindset can make because my best "success" this year is a result of MINDSET!
This one is HUGE! I often ask why our current still looks the same if we want to prepare Ss for a different future!
R3: For some, an element of fear - innovation means risk and risk can be scary!
R3: We don't know what we don't know. Ts are connected, searching. learning, but we are a small subset of all Ts out there.
R3: I'm concerned about the effects of higher teacher turnover. There may be change but not necessarily innovation.
Agreed. Fear. Mistrust. Misunderstanding. Comfort. https://t.co/2Ntv0mtnGn
R3: Fear. A culture that isn't supportive of making mistakes along the way.
R3: lack of support from administration.
It is such an easy change too. Doesn’t cost us anything!
R3: don't know where to go? You don't know what you don't know!
A fair concern, . Change does not equate innovation. Even improvements doesn't equate innovation.
I often wonder what "school" would look like if we threw it all out the window & started over? What would it look like for Ss? Ts?
It's awesome when admin. encourages trying new things, putting yourself out there for your students.
R3 mindset of but if I fail I may look bad in front of students and peers or admin may make up evaluation
I wonder if teachers who are free to innovate are more likely to stay in the profession.
Q4 How do you balance innovation and standards?
We make time for the things we feel are important.
NOT only did T's change in mindset cost us nothing but we (& she) gained so much from her change! WIN...WIN!
I have said something very similar so many times the last several years. :(
There's no institution on the planet more badly in need of being rebuilt from the ground up than institutional school.
I would certainly think so. It would encourage me to keep learning and at the top of my game. Interesting thought!
I wonder this too. Have we stifled our own ability to innovate, thus creating a spiral of mandates. Innovation is the key!
Yes! So thankful that mine do!!
Just joining in.. :) Great discussion on innovation!
R4: True innovation will cover all standards plus some if done within the context of the subject matter.
“: I wonder if teachers who are free to innovate are more likely to stay in the profession. ” Excellent point!!
Amen to that. The question is what will it take for that to happen?
A4 Actually inovation IS one of our standards via our "Living Curriculum" performance-based pay model
R4 Here's where mindset & tossing the old out the window really comes into play. We need to rethink "covering the standards"
R3: A Ts willingness to say, "I don't know how this will turn out. I have no guarantees. But it's still worth trying."
R4: Sometimes innovation may go against the standards but is still in the best interest of creating invigoration with students
A4) Know standards well enough to be creative in teaching them. Innovate w/ focus on S learning.
Hi Nadine! Great you could join in!
Ownership of one own classroom is huge for Ts happiness one would think would love to see a study
. that is interesting! How is it measured?
R4: Good instructional design.
R4: Innovation brings along the standards. Ss are learning the information even if it looks entirely different in another room
R4) Sticking to critical standards and not making your T's teach to the test.
R4: It it more important to know the date a war started or have problem solving skills to keep the next from happening?
A4: Standards are a base but creativity and innovation can branch from them. Ts just need to know how, not feel restricted.
I think we're sitting in the middle of one right now. Small pockets of Ts, pushing the envelope. Can't be top-down.
That would be interesting, Ready to start your doctorate?
BAM! Yes we do!!! https://t.co/lLzBS1vAKv
R4 Here's where mindset & tossing the old out the window really comes into play. We need to rethink "covering the standards"
R4: does anyone remember when we didn't have standards? Was there more innovation? More engagement of Ss? Less turnover?
do some admins see innovation as a threat? Scares them?
Agreed. I think there are some admins out there who want to push the envelope too! :)
R4: We can build standards into innovation and innovative teaching. Break out of the box.
No one said the skills embedded in the standards had to come from a textbook or worksheet! Think differently!
R4: PBL maybe? Authentic assessment, hitting our learning goals in new ways? "Hey, kid, what did you make today?" PLTW, for one.
YES!!! This is awesome. https://t.co/32qqsDvYiQ
No one said the skills embedded in the standards had to come from a textbook or worksheet! Think differently!
., in my personal experience, yes. Leadership style can be a factor too
Q5 What is the coolest idea you have learned from someone & implemented?
is innovation the threat or is the unknown?
Power standards are embedded in all we do every day.
Innovation chat on tonight definitely check out the hashtag and storify later...
. yes, is full of educators leading innovation from all levels.
R5: Most recently, it's gotta be . My total and utter obsession at the moment!
As an admin, I say bring on the innovation!! But it is a careful balance - lots of mandates to work w/
Truth. I guess I should have said bottom-up, building-level, rather than edict from "on high".
for a few, the threat is not doing it the proven way or their way.
A5: Breakout EDU and Design Thinking in the primary grades via my pal
A5: at least this year, coolest ideas have come from GAFE Admins Google+ community which has helped us to get more out of GAFE
R5: Photo Booth at ICE...I think it was Curt's... We have one too for our 4Cs Conference.
R5: I can't pick just one thing, but the amount I've learned from the Voxer group this year is amazing.
R5-For me, the maker movement. Ss come to school EARLY to make in our makerspace. Transformational
Gotta start the mindset young!
My TL is loaded w/breakout right now. I know exactly zero about it, but curious. Looks pretty cool.
A5) Have picked up some great ideas for encouraging collaboration among Ss w/ in Canvas.
Such an awesome learning experience. Our kids love it!
R5: not sure I got this from anyone but gonna incorporate intro to manufacturing with my ICP curriculum using 3D Design
I need to check out more on breakout edu!
R5: Hard to nail down one thing. My math PLN () has changed everything for me. Student-centered, productive struggle.
Now that sounds cool! That actually leads in our next question beautifully!
R5: Getting involved in these twitter chats has transformed my idea of education this year. Great stuff out there
Most definitely! https://t.co/GUVNi2hrQR
No one said the skills embedded in the standards had to come from a textbook or worksheet! Think differently!
Q6 What is the coolest idea you innovated & implemented?
R5: learning PBL before there was PBL from my supervising teacher 20 yrs ago
There are some mighty cool things I have learned from other educators in Twitter chats!!!
Q5 I'm with Susie...one thing? EVERYTHING! Authors like Daniel Pink, Brene Brown, and Tim Brown.
R6) Not really cool but colleague & I had Ss use Google Docs this sem & has really resulted in some great convs via comments.
R5 I have "borrowed" many PLTW ideas from & including but not limited to using Minecraft for PLTW HW
R6 Forming a moderator team(s) for Twitter Chats ;) Each moderator brings so much to the network!
Sounds pretty awesome! Innovation "looks" differently for each person, which is the beauty of innovation!
R6: Implemented PD Badges in my school district this year. It's been amazing!
I'm hoping to "sell" Head of School on to gather data to increase accountability!
R6: Wish I could claim one. All my best stuff is stolen.
R6: I do something called a 9-page spread. Great visual tool for learning. Again got this from my sup T
R6 I give St an option to film 120 second video about projects to email to parents during the day! Ps love seeing their Sts
R6) Using video tools in our LMS to help our students with special needs collaborate and communicate
there is a archive of an Learning Lab webinar on BreakOut Edu and we have a Pinterest board too.
I want to do something like this!!! We will have to chat more about this!
R6: I borrowed 's digital badging spreadsheets and used them during our lead teacher mtgs this year. They rocked it!
We need to remember that innovation isn't entirely utilizing technology. It is done through a variety of strategies
Q7 How do we encourage & empower others to innovate?
What a great idea! Way to solve the "What did you do at school today" problem! https://t.co/JJFkK90wqO
R6 I give St an option to film 120 second video about projects to email to parents during the day! Ps love seeing their Sts
which badging platform are you using for PD?
R7: If you want a behavior, MODEL the behavior.
Have to jump out early, . I will check in later for more great ideas. Thanks everyone
R6: Giving students tools to be life long learners who are engaged is important.
Yes. Innovation is not about tech. It is a mindset under which we transform how & what we do!
R7) Modeling, collaboration, support, encouragement.
Thanks for joining & sharing!
Yes, I much prefer the term collaborating. As the old saying goes: steal from 1 = plagarism, steal from many = research.
R7: share, support, collaborate, model
R7: Model, model, encourage, model, cheerlead, model, model some more, then repeat.
R7: Excellent PD. Transformational leadership. Helping to foster a culture of learning.
R7 Be the supportive roll not the know it all! Find the time to help the first time asked they may not have courage to asks twice
When asked, "Can I?", say "YES!" Encourage & support ideas.
R7: being innovative is hard work. It takes time and isn't for everyone. Growing innovation small and with dedicated Ts
Real learning would take place and Ss wouldn't be afraid to fail! It would allow Ss to find their passions!
R7: I read a tweet once that said something like "culture eats strategy for breakfast." Really stuck with me, wish I could credit
Finding the time to help WHEN ASKED is crucial...I AGREE!!!!!
R7 Teach folks how to innovate. Put value on innovation. Start a dream board to get ideation started.
R7: In our weekly PDs we've been showcasing some cool stuff Ts in the bldg are doing. One leads, many willing to follow.
I agree. I think it is imperative that we are supportive through it all! Support ideas, questions, solutions.
Peter Drucker gets credited for that
R7) Understand that not every T is there yet but saying yes when T's are ready.
. Our Head of School always reminds us "it's all about culture" so we're working on cultivating it!
R7: lack of integration = greater stagnation. Find those who are never satisfied
Great idea! We we showcase cool ideas in our own buildings, it lowers the "threat" level. Others will follow!
R7: model, cheerlead,& celebrate both the success and attempts. Create culture that promotes each other and strives for meaningful
That is KEY! Support each person where they are! But keep pushing forward!
Final “aha’s” to share? Another tidbit of advice you might share about your journey of learning?
You gotta read The Art of Coaching Teams, by That Drucker quote is one of my favs these days too.
Never be afraid to fail. Never be afraid to ask to do things that are "out there".
My Head of School likes Drucker too but he has us reading a lot of other authors like Patrick Lencioni lately!
Final aha: saw this shared again recently-always assume you have something to learn from others!
Find your tribe! They'll remind you you're not crazy when you want to try something new.
So thankful for such an inspiring bunch of innovators! Way to be awesome
