Welcome one and all to our 4th #NT2t Birthday Bash celebration! We will be sharing some Twitter gifts that we have found this year & ask you to share yours too.
Introduce yourself! Tell us your name, your role and location and mention a topic (education-related or not) that has interested you in 2017 and why. #NT2T

Morning, #nt2t. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in CO. Lately, I've been interested in learning that's less influenced by grades. Today, I'm interested in this chat birthday party.
Good morning #nt2t family from Barbara, school counselor and author of What's Under Your Cape? I've learned so much about integrating #kindness int our school climate from my Twitter PLN since joining in 2014. https://t.co/ju0rozbBTv
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. I am a news junkie so have been following lots of topics this year. :) #nt2t

A1: Increasing the practice of #mindfulness has become one of my goals this year b/c of what I've learned on Twitter! Here's a post I wrote about it, for my educator friends. https://t.co/EiyvAxXlos#nt2t
Connected Educators - Happy 4th birthday #NT2T! Sending a reminder of how a community started with a small chat online:
https://t.co/LPedXjO5yR#edchat (Our first article about #nt2t from 2013!)
My Ss have 20 minutes of reading and then I offered some suggestions for different choices they could do for homework. I've had Ss doing their own experiments, writing stories independ. etc #NT2t

It was real fun to co-moderate and be part of #nt2t community back in 2013! Thank you for teaching me about the idea of "Personal Learning Network" #PLN#edchat

Digital Citizenship is becoming more and more important as we learn not just how to use technology, but how to use it well. What examples do you have of being a good digital citizen? #nt2t
Well said. The global aspect is one reason why i love twitter - you have the chance to learn from so many different people from different countries and cultures. #NT2t
A2) Teaching kids to cite their sources and consider fair use/intellectual property. In addition, since our school is online, we emphasize safe practices (not oversharing, for ex). #nt2t
And thank you Ruta for being such an integral part of the team. You provided so many insights and shared your knowledge so we could all grow. ๐ #NT2t
A2) Being on here in learning communities like this, sharing what I have to offer and being open to learning from others -- all visible to the world. #digcit#UseTech4Good#nt2t

Hang in. Side note-- You just summed up another PLN plus: When facing brick-&-mortar friction, a far-flung digital network can provide modicum of support, inspiration. #nt2t
The idea of approaching connections for lifelong learning purpose stayed with me since. And, making tiny steps to connect and exchange ideas is how social impact is made :) Thx #nt2t#edchat
@Hturk Just yesterday I asked a student if he would be willing to use all of the words from his last month's worth of texts in a letter to his grandmother. Thanks to @houstonkraft for that powerful filter suggestion. #nt2t

Iโm Vanessa, middle school counselor from NJ. My focus this year with students has been on growth mindset, and Iโve also focused on PD for myself! #nt2t

A2 Be a good digital citizen by keeping helpfulness in your sights. Be kind, not a bully. "If you don't have anything good to say ..." has merit. #NT2t
Hang in. Side note-- You just summed up another PLN plus: When facing brick-&-mortar friction, a far-flung digital network can provide modicum of support, inspiration. #nt2t
Digital citizenship should be part of curricula. In a globalized world itโs necessary that Ss learn how to use digital opportunities responsibly. #NT2t
It's very sad. When dealing with higher ed you are battling their sense that they are already in the top in their field; what more could they learn? Ugh! #NT2t
Oversharing can be cause for concern. Potluck sharing vibe among edu Tweeps (analogy I learned from @AngelaMaiers) is cause for celebration. For instance, in matters of fair use, here's top-notch resource from @rmbyrne: https://t.co/5q1y6rPihn#nt2t
A3) Asking Ss to distill their learning to 140 (or even 280) characters forces them to really hone in on significance of topic. Also allows Ts/schools to share the good things that go on in schools since bad news seems to get attention. #nt2t
Yes Ruta; key being lifelong for me as well. The things I learn here, from all of you, stick with me because I want to learn, am choosing to learn, and therefore am more involved/invested. #NT2t
A1- the view from a lookout or plateau is better than the one from a window. That's what Twitter can do to you and your students when it comes to learning. #NT2t
@Hturk Just yesterday I asked a student if he would be willing to use all of the words from his last month's worth of texts in a letter to his grandmother. Thanks to @houstonkraft for that powerful filter suggestion. #nt2t
Book I finished recently, _Teaching Minds_ by Roger Schank (from 2011) goes pretty hard at higher ed for what author labels self-perpetuating structures that aren't productive for learners. #nt2t
Agree but I'm the only full time social studies teacher at my school. If it weren't for my online PLN, I'd feel quite alone & definitely would be missing out on a lot of great info & ideas. :) #nt2t
I like this analogy, Ines. For me, Twitter plants so many seeds that I can cultivate (with varying degrees of success) into subsequent stories or scatter for others to use. #nt2t
Here's Q4. My "gift" would be family and community engagement!
Q4) How can schools use Twitter and other online platforms to connect with families and the community? #nt2t
I love Twitter and the PLNs here. But I can't help but think that if it really is the best learning and growth opportunity you're getting, something's wrong with your institution. #leadLAP#learnLAP#nt2t

A3: What I love is when classrooms have a Twitter account and share their learning stories and day to day experiences. It's like I get to read all about you & what ur life is like without having to travel. It's a gift for kids for sure! #NT2t
A1: It has been absolutely amazing to use twitter for PD this year! I have learned so many new ideas & have participated in PD on line & in person, which has led me to meet other passionate educators. #nt2t
A3 Twitter is still to the point and now -- with 280 characters -- more expansive. It's good practice to create sharp, vivid images -- even adding images -- to leave lasting impressions with students. #NT2t
Even when I was teaching in a school we were siloed - closed doors, varying schedules, in a rush all day long. My PLN lets me slow down, dig in, and learn on my time. #NT2t
A1- the view from a lookout or plateau is better than the one from a window. That's what Twitter can do to you and your students when it comes to learning. #NT2t
A4: Twitter opens up our windows and walls and invites people in, to join us, to be a part of something amazing! When our library got new furniture, we tweeted out this PSA, our Ss w/Superintendent @thadroherhttps://t.co/XrpOkK9WtM#nt2t
A4) As a parent, I love following Ts at my kids' schools to see what is going on in classrooms as well as the school feeds. Even though my kids' Ts aren't on Twitter that I've seen, it's still something. #nt2t
A4 Using Twitter shows that you're more than a one-trick pony for family and community engagement. Dispense with staid, stale newsletters to inject life into communication tactics. #NT2t
A4) Every classroom should have an account to share what they're doing. Families need to be engaged, communities need to understand what they're investing in, you need the PR for your school and your career. You can serve all these purposes at once. #nt2t
Here's Q4. My "gift" would be family and community engagement!

Here's Q4. My "gift" would be family and community engagement!
Q4) How can schools use Twitter and other online platforms to connect with families and the community? #nt2t
Don't want this last part to get lost. It's been said many times before but I'll say it again: If you don't tell your story, someone else will. And it might not be a positive one. #nt2t
A3) Asking Ss to distill their learning to 140 (or even 280) characters forces them to really hone in on significance of topic. Also allows Ts/schools to share the good things that go on in schools since bad news seems to get attention. #nt2t

Q4) How can schools use Twitter and other online platforms to connect with families and the community? #nt2t
A4: My school joined twitter this year. Itโs been awesome to see the great work my colleagues are doing every day! I hope more families join & follow us to become aware of what our kids are learning! #nt2t
A4: Last year around Hour of Code a parent that is using coding in his job came in to talk with the class because of that view into the classroom. #NT2t
A4 Cautionary equity note: Perform due diligence to determine what channels family and community members already use to learn school info. Include those preferred sources even while stretching to try new(er) media. #nt2t
Here are some suggestions. I used them and i think they can be helpful to curate content for your PLN. But there are more tools and apps available. Do you have any suggestions? #NT2t
Nope but sounds like a good idea. My daughter's new T (there was switch right before Thanksgiving) had us sign up for Remind but hasn't been used yet that I can tell. #nt2t
Oh! Oh! This discussion really speaks to me. I follow all of you and don't have the opportunity to follow my own kids' teachers. It really feels like a lost opportunity on their part and I DO want to push... but don't know how. #nt2t
A5 Curating is creating or gathering content that might be helpful to others and dispensing it. Google alerts, Medium daily digests and Twitter lists are my go-to places to check out polished articles. #NT2t
A5) Curation is managing & organizing resources/info in way that makes sense for you & your purpose. Also makes possible to share w/ others. I love Pocket, Diigo, Flipboard, Padlet, Symbaloo, etc. depending on purpose. #nt2t
A1: Specific details that could be used to gain access to accounts or seek you out in person in a manner that is not on your terms. This includes pictures that give location details, either overtly or covertly by the inclusion of landmarks. #nt2t
That's the way I am. I don't want to come across as that pushy parent asking Ts to do "one more thing" on top of everything else they do (b/c I know how hard the job is). #nt2t

Exit ticket 2.0. Like attaching a sticky note to a megaphone, or tossing digital stone into pond, causing intriguing ripples.
Can't. Stop. Creating. Analogies. #nt2t
A3) Asking Ss to distill their learning to 140 (or even 280) characters forces them to really hone in on significance of topic. Also allows Ts/schools to share the good things that go on in schools since bad news seems to get attention. #nt2t
I was hands-off, too, as a parent, but as a counselor I'd love to know about a tool that could help me grow! Just a little stuck about how to do it; maybe ask for some time as a faculty meeting or a PTO meeting (if teachers attend those)? #nt2t
A5: Twitter has been my go to curation tool. The tweets that we post daily document our journey over the course of the year. Then Sโs use these tweets at the end of the year to create their yearbook of memories. #NT2t
A3: If they are already on Twitter, just reach out with a tweeted 'Hello.' If they are not already on Twitter it can be difficult to get them there, I've encountered a lot of resistance to the use of this connection tool in particular. #nt2t
A5: Twitter has been my go to curation tool. The tweets that we post daily document our journey over the course of the year. Then Sโs use these tweets at the end of the year to create their yearbook of memories. #NT2t
Boom! Or offered to Skype in, then tweeted out the event to share the story. My husband Skypes from NASA as a guest scientist; totally tweet-worthy! #nt2t
And yet... and yet... those who are sharing their classroom integrate it into everything else they're doing. It's not one more thing. It's like saying teaching is one thing... but I have to talk to the kids, too? #nt2t
That's the way I am. I don't want to come across as that pushy parent asking Ts to do "one more thing" on top of everything else they do (b/c I know how hard the job is). #nt2t
I use it to share reliable websites for my high school Ss to use when they are searching for sources. I have a link to one in each lesson but I just started doing it in the last few months. :) #nt2t
I love this @JayWigmore It serves as a great source for memories as well as reinforced #digcit - especially having to go back and read what you posted. #NT2t

I know there are Ts on Twitter at my daughter's elem school especially. I should ask one of them if the school encourages it & if they share w/ & enc other Ts to do so. #nt2t
A5 Learned about Diigo via #nt2t just as I was starting to feel Twitter-inundated. Helpful for bookmarking & later revisiting worthy resources. (Now I'm only forgetting *much* of what I learn, not all of it.) #nt2t
It's so cool to see how things have come full circle! I get to plan with David and the whole @digcitsummit gang as we plan our Summit in St. Louis in 2018. #NT2t

Yes! Important to give Ss opportunities to practice this. In each of my lessons, I encourage them to curate at least one source they want to use for their semester capstone project. Give them freedom to choose platform/tool. #nt2t

A6: Giving Sโs voice and choice is so powerful. It is more then them being engaged, it is empowering them. When students are connected to their learning it doesnโt end. #nt2t
Thinking that if you volunteered to co-lead it takes some of the pressure and time requirements off the teachers AND open the door to some great discussion and opportunities. #NT2t
In reply to
@CHitch94, @JeremyDBond, @BarbaraGruener
Yes, I've been meaning to do that. At a PTO meeting the elementary principal mentioned Twitter as one way they're sharing (he tweets once daily), but so far as parents we've experienced only 2 teachers on Twitter for our 2 kids going through the school. #nt2t
I haven't had anyone tell me that they check it but don't use it. They either use it & we are already connected here or they have no interest in getting an account, & are quite vehement about it. Some claim it is too negative for them here, others don't want one more thing. #nt2t
That is what I imagine and experienced when I was working w/ pre-serv Ts in my previous role. :( However, know there are some ed profs encouraging Twitter use. #nt2t
To random people on Twitter: Think of using Internet as a tool to learn, exchange knowledge, start projects with people who live in different locations than you.
google "Personal Learning Networks" to learn from "Connected Educators" about this new behaviour!
#nt2t#mindset
A7) Think there are advanced search functions in Twitter. I tend to use Tweetdeck so can peruse hashtags & lists I am most interested in when it's convenient. Good info keeps coming up. #nt2t
So many perceptions that must change. First, that Twitter is a cauldron of negativity. Enter education Twitter and it's high heaven (not that there aren't enlightening debates!) Second: That it's to "get the word out." Ideally Twitter is mostly a conversation. #UseTech4Good#nt2t

It is tough some times for people to see the power in different social media tools. For example I still canโt get on the Instagram bandwagon as I donโt see a use for it. #nt2t

A7: The Advanced Search feature is AWESOME when you want to get specific, tweets from a specific location. Think about it- there is an event and you want to get reaction from different locales, use the adv search to search by specific location #NT2t
Also worth noting: Different ways to 'be' on Twitter. For instance, so far, I'm here for prof learning, which would arguably offer less value as follow for students or their families. Haven't yet taken plunge for class account, blaming my available personal bandwidth #nt2t

Perfect attitude. Think to be open-minded is the base for growing and life long learning. And: the should be a characteristic trait for educators. #NT2t
One use for it with which I've been playing, with mixed success: Additional (public) outlet for sharing & preserving in-class reading recommendations https://t.co/eRh9MkeLzz Many social-media tools could be applied to this purpose. #nt2t
That is key. There is only so much time in the day and we all must decide how to manage everything we want to do with our lives. I struggle with this all the time! #NT2t

A small thing where our attention goes to. But important micro habit what we "like".
Hours can go into comments about pictures OR it can be a virtual ongoing ideation. :) Ideas --ใProjects. #selfactualisation#mindset#habits#nt2t#PLN
