Hello, my name is April! I am an AYA Math preservice teacher from BGSU, currently in my student teaching semester. I am the Membership Chair of BGCTM. #octmchat
Hi! My name is Miranda and I am a junior at BGSU studying math education. I am the President of BGCTM and excited to chat with you all tonight. #octmchat
A1: I don’t remember being connected as a student - with math or any specific content. We did some service projects but they weren’t connected to subject areas. I think connections to the “real world” would have been very helpful! #octmchat
A1 What a great question! I'm sorry to say that as a student, I don't remember ever being connected with the community in math. I definitely think it would have helped give me a broader perspective. #octmchat
A1. I didn’t feel like I was connected to the community through math. Bowling Green does have STEM in the park, but I never attended. I think a connection would be critical to math creativity! I also think it would help show how math is used in the real world #octmchat
A1: When I was a student, I don't really remember being too connected with the community in regards to math. I think this would have been very beneficial to help me see where and how often math is used in our world! #octmchat
A1. I remember a trip to COSI but math generally stayed inside our classroom! I think it would be great to see how much math connects to our daily lives! #octmchat
A1: we had some study groups. But I would have loved to have connected like I have in my masters program and how I see my students connecting in class. #octmchat
A1: I honestly wish I was more connected with math when I was younger. It would have definitely left a great impact if I was more willing regarding it. #octmchat
It seems like there could be a connection to service trips and content on an interdisciplinary level... 🤔 It would take some planning, but could leave a lasting memory with the participants #octmchat
A1 While I was in school, I don't remember any connections to the community with math. I remember a lot of science fairs and competitions. I would of loved to do something with math. I think, it would make it real and celebrated. #octmchat
A1: As a student I wasn’t lucky enough to make connections within my math classes let alone in the community!
I didn’t see the connections to what I was doing outside the walls of my classroom! 😔 #octmchat
A2 Our students participate in 5th and 6th grade GCCTM math competition. We have family nights at the local library. I would love to have more math nights!#octmchat
A2. One connection could be guest speakers from the community talking about how they use math in their lives. There also could be an avenue for community math game night #octmchat
A2: There are so many ways to connect math in the classroom to the community. I think it is very important to use a lot of real world examples. If you were teaching about fractions, you might give examples pertaining to food or measuring when baking. #octmchat
A2-I know one of our high schools analyzed a local pizza chain. They shared the resultswith the company. I think with project based learning there are more opportunities now. I think this is wide open and open to the imagination. Some might fail but some might rock. #octmchat
A2 In the first stop of my career, I always coordinated a math counts team as well as an academic team for a yearly competition. The kids were great, parents supportive. #octmchat
A2: I think that a good resource to connect the two is methods such as the one we are using! Engaging classroom content onto social media sounds pretty productive so far! #octmchat
A2: Trying to engage parents and encouraging math conversations in place of traditional HW. Asking Ss to share their learning and/or reflections w/parents. #octmchat
A2 continued....in my 2nd stop, I coordinated other events - not math related. In the 3rd - we had a math night in the Intermediate building for families #octmchat
A2: When I was teaching, one of my parents volunteered to chat with my classes about Stats... they owned their own Stats business in the area #bettertogether
Why didn’t I reach more? I loved that @SycamoreSchools STEAM went on field trips to see the opportunities #octmchat
#octmchat A3 i used to have my students go shopingw/their parents. They would figure out the unit price and the best but. Not sure if that is what you mean
Q2: My child's school has family Math night which engages the school community. I also think programs like Biztown provide students with examples of how math can be used within the larger community. #octmchat
A1: In elementary school I was not connected with my community in math. However, I think that it is beneficial to be involved in the community because it creates authentic learning experiences. #octmchat
I did not encourage my students taking math to the community other than the phrase, “math is used everywhere”. I think showing students specific ways they can use math in the real world will help!
Maybe designing planters for a community garden?? #roughdraftthought#octmchat
A3: At my current field placement, I encourage the students to look for math wherever they can, whether it be outside or at home. This way they can see that math goes beyond the classroom walls. #octmchat
A3: By having students and peers to consider about the utilizations of mathematics outside of the classroom. One of my favorite examples is the methods and ways our devices operate through just patterns of zeroes and ones! #octmchat
A3-we didn’t really take it into the community if we had a cafe for teachers at school that the kids did stuff in all of their classes to prepare. After testing we will do one and invite parents. Lots of intermediate math on how much to get and what quantities to buy. #octmchat
#octmchat Q2: I like to connect students to the community through tasks. Such as, taking them to the road to determine which cars are speeding with distance rate and time, or having them design a community center in geometry, or exploring the math of geodomes then building one

A3 Field Trip to the grocery store, take pictures, create questions, notices, and wonders. My 4th grade teachers invited parents in and students taught their parents games that they could play at home #octmchat
#octmchat when I taught 5th grade we would have the kids create a business, actually sold the product at a fair, had Junior Achievement into evaluate business, profit and sustainability. Great experience for our students.
A3-(continued) I think the use of problems instead of exercises could also help students create the connection of how they can use math in the community #octmchat
A4: I have never faced any challenges yet but I'm sure I will in the future. I hope to demonstrate to my students that math is exciting, all around us, and with hard work, anyone can do math! #octmchat
