Any ideas for creative and thoughtful literature circles or book clubs, specifically for middle schoolers (8th grade)? I’m looking to engage students beyond assigning roles to the readers. Help! @teacher2teacher
A1: Innovation in our schools requires us to consider how we can empower learning by developing new and improved experiences that develop #FutureReady skills. It's not to say that we throw out what works, rather looking at how we can engage in iteration. #TLAP
A1: In the words of Ms. Frizzle: "It's time to take chances. Make Mistakes and get messy!" Creativity and Innovation and of course, ambition and passion. #tlap
A1 Innovation in education is trying something new that's meaningful and purposeful with the intent to empower students and develop necessary #futureready skills. #tlap
A1- Innovation in the educational setting is going outside the box and taking risks. Finding new and creative ways to help our students learn and grow! #tlap
A1 Trying something new, or tweaking a previous idea, to better your learning environment & your Ss Basically anything that is not about you, but the learner #tlap
A1 “The innovator’s mindset can be defined as the belief that the abilities, intelligence, and talents are developed so that they lead to the creation of new and better ideas.” (from @gcouros)
#tlap
A1: so importantly realize innovation- new & better- May just be an iteration for others. A step forward for you may give me another obstacle to learning. Innovation is in the eye of the beholder #TLAP
Innovation in an education setting means that we’re letting words like “it’s always been that way” or “it’s always worked” be reassessed and possibly rethought #tlap
A1: Innovation allows for students to create relevant, authentic products. It is about having our students do things that will prepare them for their future beyond the traditional poster assignments or dioramas. #tlap@burgessdave@ERobbPrincipal
Evening, Mateys! It's Nathan Perry from Grain Valley, MO, and this is how I feel because my wife and I just booked our vacation tickets to Boston for this summer! #tlap
A1 Innovation to me is breaking the status quo. It is putting the leadership in the hands of our students and empowering their voice to go further than they imagined. Innovation gives meaning to learning and is all about creation, empathy & impact. #TLAP
I often use the term renovated as you're sharing. We can take what we currently do and renovate it, leading to improved ideas. Continuous improvement is necessary! #tlap
A1 Trying something new, or tweaking a previous idea, to better your learning environment & your Ss Basically anything that is not about you, but the learner #tlap
A1: stepping outside of traditional methods and finding ways to meet the needs of all students. They need more than just the skills used to pass a test. #tlap
A1 Innovation is when creativity, choice, voice and collaboration meet to create new ideas and experiences for students and teachers that heighten engagement and growth #TLAP
A1: innovation in the schools is finding a new way to teach a lesson. Taking something that you’ve done before and re-creating it or create a new method for learning. I’ve done this with novels and writing #tlap
A1: Innovation is about trying something new or trying to make something better. It often means taking a risk and persisting when things get tough. #tlap
I love to connect w/ other educators here, but if you don't have a profile picture, or your bio doesn't mention education, I may not follow back. I try to keep my feed full of all things EDU. Let me know if I missed connecting w/ you. #TeachSC#Ditchbook#tlap#leadlap#satchat
A1 Innovation involves taking the content (Social Studies is very content rich) and skills necessary to be successful citizens—and then finding ways that help Ss access them. This is constantly changing as Ss and society changes. #tlap
A1: Innovation is taking something old or ordinary and improving upon it. The best teachers MacGyver the heck out of their curriculum every single year! #tlap
A1: Simply put, it's taking something that exists, or creating something that doesn't, & using it to make things better for Ss or Ts or both. Using things in irregular ways to meet needs. That's innovation. #tlap
A1: innovation to me in a classroom setting is a personal journey between you and your passions/interests. Taking leaps and tip toes towards evolving your craft in some way (big or small) #tlap
A1: To borrow from @gcouros, innovation is that which is "new, different, and better." That means not accepting the status quo or living by the rules of compliance but, instead, taking risks & creating adventures in the classroom that will excite kids about learning. #tlap
A1 Simply TRYING for the good of your students. I would think many would assume my answer would include technology or the space, but it’s really just trying something to make the learning experience better, more effective and enjoyable. #tlap
A1: Innovation is all about making sure the Ss are getting the best possible education experience. It’s all about pushing the boundaries of excellence out as far as we can! #tlap
It's HERE! So excited to finally get to LISTEN to #tlap! This is going to be incredible! Thanks @burgessdave for taking the time to record this so we could hear the passion and enthusiasm in your voice! #DBCBookBlogs
a1 #tlap something that is sustainable, person independent and helps improve a school's culture. something that aids in bringing the community closer, allows for better utilization of resources and creates various dynamic learning opportunities.
Q2: There's no denying that our learners still need to know all the basics. Why is it necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools? #TLAP
Jean, I love the "...to achieve more." We must not do things differently just to be different. The purpose and intention will yield better outcomes! #tlap
A1: Innovation might involve the 4Cs, creatively solving a problem, issue or situation & thinking of a variety of ways to improve it & help the human race, animals, the world, others...#TLAP
A1. Innovation is exploring the new and trying different things by taking risks. Seeking the most cuurent, up to date research and applying it within the learning classroom for improvement. #tlap
Yes I like how you mention big or small. People think being innovative just has to be something massive...sometimes the little changes in education have the biggest pay offs. Great point! #tlap
A2: Innovation in education is important for developing the next generation of innovators and creative thinkers. Yes, our kids need to know the basics, but fostering skills (see graphic below) is also critical to move toward the innovation economy. World is always evolving! #TLAP
A1) work with the students in mind, adapt to the ever changing times and use your learning objective to teach deeper more meaningful skill: INNOVATE #tlap
A1: Innovation in education is the commitment to an idea. The struggle, the sacrifice, the risk taking, the willingness to do whatever it takes to make an idea or thought become a reality. #tlap
A2: Ss might not be sure if they are "allowed" to be innovative and creative. They have to see they can learn and still have fun in the classroom. I remember when I brought BB8 in for coding. They looked at it going: "Umm... are we allow to learn with that?" #tlap
A2 We has this discussion today. The jobs you’ll have, the solutions we’re desperate for, will not come with instructions. We need you to start practicing last year. #tlap
Adam, you make a great point in meeting the needs of the students. Sometimes we innovate because we think it's what students need, but what if we plan what students need innovatively? #tlap
Q2: There's no denying that our learners still need to know all the basics. Why is it necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools? #TLAP
Innovation is getting away from the tried and true, and relinquishing control for student connections to happen. Step back and see where this new thing goes. #TLAP
A2- We need to create innovators because as cheesy as it sounds...these kids are the future. Lots of issues in society...we need a generation or movers and shakers to lead positive social changes in the world. #tlap
Sorry, but there's no way memory, verbal, auditory, and spacial skills are declining...how would that even work? in education?
https://t.co/lIothcfjpt#tlap
A2 We had this discussion today. The jobs you’ll have, the solutions we’re desperate for, will not come with instructions. We need you to start practicing last year. #tlap
Appreciate this, Nathan! Involving the voice of all stakeholders (including our students) and taking time to really contemplate, deeply reflect, and engage in discussions is critical to advancing education. #tlap
A2 We need to encourage/foster creativity. After seeing basics, after main questions, we need to push students to go deeper, question more & make the learning about them & their lives/communities. We need to give context & use to learning. Get them excited about learning! #TLAP
Q2: There's no denying that our learners still need to know all the basics. Why is it necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools? #TLAP
The aftermath of the rollout of the World of Factions! Ss broke into website to see what Faction they were in (aka Seating Chart) #epsachieves#xplap#tlap#gbl
A2: To quote my friend @TechNinjaTodd it’s because “kids deserve it.” And furthermore, our students live in an innovative world that will only be as good as they make it in the future. #tlap
A2 the world is rapidly changing jobs our students will have don’t even exist yet. The next great idea could be in the mind of our students we need to help them unleash it #TLAP
A2: Anyone can learn the basics, but sparking innovation fosters creativity and ownership (in both educators and students), and creativity and ownership foster growth! #tlap
A2: Gotta know the recipe to bake the cookie, but without innovation we would never have the brownie-cookie. Need to be able to help our students foster innovation and create some delicious learning results. #tlap
A2: It's not just about innovation- it's about having the ability to be problem solvers. To see that there is something wrong in the world and be able to find solutions to fix it. #tlap
A2: I think of how I feel during a long day of PD where I just sit...and sit..I don’t like to learn like that, so why would my kids? Kids are visual and kinesthetic learners by nature. I try and build my lessons around that. #TLAP
A2: I don't see these as separate ideas. Yes, Ss need to learn the basics, but who says they can't learn them or share their thinking in innovative ways? The more we foster creativity in schools, the more tools they will have to create & innovate as adults! #tlap
Q2: There's no denying that our learners still need to know all the basics. Why is it necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools? #TLAP
A2: A culture of innovation should actually be the norm. To shy away from innovation is to have a stagnant mindset. There's no growth in that, nothing new, and no ripples of excitement. A flexible mindset, however, leads to great things for Ss, Ts, schools, & districts. #tlap
A1: innovation - from the Latin niche for new. Is a new way of doing things. Which could mean a lot. In our setting let’s tackle the weaknesses of our system - let’s move toward agency, obligations, creating with purpose. #TLAP
A1: Innovation is the creation, or culmination of ideas to build something new, or make an existing thing better by way of skill, practices, or ideals.
#tlap
A2 To stay relevant and competitive in our changing world, students need to know why, how, what, and when to innovate. Basic skills are also developed along the way. #tlap
A1: I have always used @gcouros definition of #innovation to guide lessons in our classroom. “Innovation is a way of thinking that creates something new and better”. #tlap#innovatorsmindset
A2: it is necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools so that S’s feel included in the learning process. Not all S’s learn the way their T teaches. Also teaches S’s there is more then one way to show how they learned. #tlap
Q2: There's no denying that our learners still need to know all the basics. Why is it necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools? #TLAP
A2: Fostering a culture of innovation in the classroom is necessary because the old ways of doing things are, for the most part, no longer relevant to the needs of our students and the current society in which we live. We need to keep up with our ever-changing world. #tlap
A1: Innovation is trying to something that's never been done before or in a way that's never been done before (while never losing sight of the end goal). #tlap
A2 :Technology is advancing quickly, and we are a global society. It is important to teach students the ability to adapt and be flexible to embrace and utilize all that we have right now and accept the challenges of what's to come.#tlap
A2: We need do empower our Ss to take control of their own learning!! Innovation allows Ss to take learning to new levels as they challenge their thinking, sparking creativity, discover, & create lasting learning! #tlap
A2 Our learners have drastically changed. No longer is memorization a priority but how to process information & find real words uses for information/products. We need to foster a culture of innovation b/c Ss need to be innovative in the fast pace of change in the real world.#tlap
Q2: There's no denying that our learners still need to know all the basics. Why is it necessary to also ensure that we foster a culture of innovation in our schools? #TLAP
A2 The basics build the foundation. We need to foster innovation because it seems that the longer students are in school the less innovative they are. We need to help students realize that taking risks is learning. #tlap
I have students respond to teenage problems posing as Buddha and respond with his teachings to the issue. They blog as a class so we can see all responses and students respond to o e another’s ideas #tlap
A2: Our Ss are the innovators that will take our reins & create what the future will be...I want them to be inspired, brilliant, practiced & creative, because THAT’S where I want to live! #tlap
A2: Yes, our students need to learn how to be innovative to tackle the problems of the future. But we also need them to be innovative now. Their creativity can make or schools and communities better. Their ideas can change the world. #tlap
A2: Students need to have access to opportunities, and be able to have a voice . The ability to create and innovate gives them access to more opportunities to succeed in this world.
#tlap
A2) A culture of innovation can be similar to a culture of leadership- innovation is unique to the individual. We all see our work differently. Building that spirit together sparks special variety that students need. #tlap
A2: We want students who are curious and creative. We must make sure that our students can then become makers instead of just consumers. This is innovation. #tlap
A2: Speaking for experience, the “way we’ve always done it” is not only dangerous, but is a real killer of innovation! Sure, it’s comfortable, but it’s not what’s best for Ss. You will be left in the dust. Trust me. #tlap
Absolutely, Roman! And in Design Thinking, empathy is the first stage. Taking time to understand the needs of individuals is crucial in order to ideate. When we understand others, what we create is more targeted to a need. Thank you for sharing this! #tlap
A2: Innovation is about risk and reward - it's risky to try new things, but the reward is priceless when it finally works after trying again and again. It facilitates ingenuity, perseverance, and creativity. #tlap
A2: schools are models - for better or for worse. Our world will need people with ideas, voices, to lead and solve. School should celebrate new ways of thinking but sometimes the opposite is true #TLAP
A2: We need to spark their passions and find out what the students are interested in. Encourage our students to work through "productive struggle" and feel comfortable taking risks. Innovators are willing to challenge the status quo...that is where learning happens. #tlap
A2: I want my students to love learning. I think it’s important to show them the different ways to learn and different strategies to use. We do everything from singing a song about the Spanish-American War to becoming Crytographers and analyzing codes during WWI. #tlap
A2: Our students are one day going to need to answer questions that aren’t even being asked yet, a culture of innovation will help foster the critical thinking skills they’ll need. #tlap
A2: We need to foster innovation, because the jobs kids are working towards don't exist yet. A large portion of the future work force will be involved in a gig economy and need to be able to find problems to solve. #tlap
A2: To quote my friend @TechNinjaTodd it’s because “kids deserve it.” And furthermore, our students live in an innovative world that will only be as good as they make it in the future. #tlap
A2: 👉🏼👀Innovation “empowers” 💥our Ss & staff to always think of creatively improving things, using 🏴☠️skills, 🎤talents, 💡 ideas❇️ #TLAP leads to ownership & pride of the school & improved culture🌈
A3: Trusting relationships are a cornerstone of any successful classroom. In order to innovate, students and teachers both need to feel supported to take responsible risks such as sharing ideas, reflecting, ideating, prototyping, and engaging in the iterative process. #TLAP
A2 The basics build the foundation. We need to foster innovation because it seems that the longer students are in school the less innovative they are. We need to help students realize that taking risks is learning. #tlap
A2: Innovation solves problems & creates opportunities. I worry because I see a culture of compliance in so many of our schools. Compliance kills both creativity and ingenuity, which are ingredients of innovation. Compliance is a dead end. Innovation is a beginning! #tlap
A2: Innovation is a great way to teach, support, and elevate the basics. Innovation raises expectations. Students learn the basics by reaching for something higher. #tlap
A1 I don't think I would describe it differently than anywhere else. To me, innovation is seeing a problem and making a solution. The best innovators take risks, think ouside the box and keep trying until they solve the problem. #tlap
A3: Trust. If there is no trust between the teachers, students, admin, community, parents, etc. then the innovation mindset will not be successful. #tlap
A5. The lessons must not only be fun & engaging for our Ss, but US as well! Ts need to bring their passions into their classrooms! Ts MUST #tlap & take the advice of the amazing @burgessdave! #COLchat
A3: Trusting relationships are a cornerstone of any successful classroom. In order to innovate, students and teachers both need to feel supported to take responsible risks such as sharing ideas, reflecting, ideating, prototyping, and engaging in the iterative process. #TLAP
A3: Trust. Students have to trust their teachers so they'll try new things without fear of reprimand and admin needs to trust teachers so we feel empowered to model innovation through our practice. #tlap
A2 change is a reality. While old ways are not bad there is always room for improvement... I like Shuri's message in Black Panther #tlaphttps://t.co/EakifLbCHa
A3 Removing restraints. If we provide the absolute minimum in expectations (for me, it’s the standards themselves), & leave all creative choices to students, Innovation begins. Then reply YES! to all of their hopes for permission. Students don’t need explicit instructions. #tlap
A2: quite simply - innovation is exciting. Same old same old is super boring for kids. Education should take adavabtage if kids’ natural powers of observation, curiosity, thinking differently, etc
Let them splain’ it in own words in own ways. We’ll all be better off
#TLAP
A3: Trusting relationships are a cornerstone of any successful classroom. In order to innovate, students and teachers both need to feel supported to take responsible risks such as sharing ideas, reflecting, ideating, prototyping, and engaging in the iterative process. #TLAP
A3: keystone to innovative culture is faith that those who fail will be meet with respect & championed rather than reprimanded. That goes for teachers & students! #TLAP
For certain! And, it's not cheesy. I know it can sound cliche, but I couldn't agree more. Engaging in authentic, relevant learning allows them to become those movers and shakers who lead positive change. #tlap
A3: Strong trusting relationships are key cornerstones of innovation. Community, collaboration and connection all help in fostering an innovative mindset. #tlap
A3: My cornerstone for innovative culture at my school is modeling the change I want to see (not quite sure what I’m modeling here but you get the point) 😂 #tlap
a3: i think having admin that supports developing a culture of innovation is important. if admin doesnt support its hard to do. Also having people in your #pln who you can share and bounce ideas off us in the innovating process. There are T's out there who can be negative #tlap
A3:Building relationships.Creating a culture where students and staff feel safe to take risks, try new things, embrace failure, learn from it and keep going. Being innovative should not be an event...it should be a continues pursuit by all the stakeholders in the school. #tlap
A3: Establishing a culture of risk-taking. If failure is not punished but instead seen of as a learning opportunity, it is amazing the growth we can see! #tlap@ERobbPrincipal@KTuttleEDU
A3: A cornerstone for a culture of innovation is trust that leads to risk-taking! No risk, no reward, no learning, no growing. If no trust, then no risk-taking. #tlap
A2 #tlap Innovative Ss have these skills: The 5th ‘C’ of 21st Century Skills? Try Computational Thinking (Not Coding) | EdSurge News https://t.co/QrmV0gJqc3
A3 I think all steps firmly start with SEL & relationships. Building environments where students feel comfortable & encouraged to take risks leads to innovation. People will resist innovation without trust. Trust is the cornerstone & SEL/Relationships are how we build it. 😊#tlap
A2 They can google the basics 😀. No, but we do need to teach Ss how to push their thinking, question others, and come up with new ideas! We have some of the smartest humans ever in our classrooms and it’s our job to teach them how to tap into that potential. #tlap
A3 A cornerstone of developing a culture of innovation is relationships. You need to build trust, empathy, a growth mindset, foster curiosity and support staff to bring about innovation and grow amazing learners in your community. #TLAP
A3: Trust. Teachers need to trust the admin, and admin needs to trust the teachers. Everyone needs to be on the same page - working for what’s best for the kids, not just the adults. #tlap
A3: We need to repeatedly give students opportunities to explore new things. I love the idea of letting students explore their passions, but so many students haven't experienced what they might be passionate about yet. I didn't discover video until i was in middle school. #tlap
A3: Support (which I'm now thinking is basically TRUST). Ts need support of admin to go "outside the box" just as much as Ss do. Having Ss and Ts support each other makes taking risks possible and takes away some of the fear! #tlap
A3:Building relationships.Creating a culture where students and staff feel safe to take risks, try new things, embrace failure, learn from it and keep going. Being innovative should not be an event...it should be a continuous pursuit by all the stakeholders in the school. #tlap
A3: Teachers must be be given creative freedom to do what’s best for kids. Also having your go-to teachers who have the same mindset as you do helps a lot. #TLAP
A3- Opportunity. Opportunities of risk taking or taking on new challenges. Sounds easy...but sometimes we get stuck in this is how we have always done it kind of mentalities in education. #tlap
#tlap is on fire tonight! I'm so so so glad I didn't sleep through this! @ElisaBostwick - you are killing it with these questions, ma'am! This group is amazing!
#TLAP A2- Some of my best results come from modelling. Lately I’m innovating by trying to show the students my steps, and my authentic mistakes (tech for instance) and get them to tell me how to fix it and proceed. When they problem solve publicly with me, learning happens.
Teachers benefit from supportive administrators & colleagues, just as students benefit from supportive educators. We are SO fortunate to have an awesome #PLN here who we can share ideas with and offer support. Which reminds me, remember to connect with one another tonight! #tlap
a3: i think having admin that supports developing a culture of innovation is important. if admin doesnt support its hard to do. Also having people in your #pln who you can share and bounce ideas off us in the innovating process. There are T's out there who can be negative #tlap
A3: One of the important pieces to innovation is not only thinking differently but understanding that we must do things differently in order to change the world for good #tlap
A3: We first need a culture where educators feel free to be innovative. That means they first need to be trusted with autonomy, & they need the encouragement, support, & available resources to be creative, explore, & engage learners in out-of-the-box thinking & doing. #tlap
A3: No fear of failure! This is created by developing that relationships of trust and empathy. It’s difficult to take risks with someone you don’t trust. #tlap
A2: the basics. Hmmmm. I think the basic itself needs redefining. How kids express and share ideas is basic. Learning is a social endeavor is basic. Relationships are at the ♥️of all we do is basic.
#TLAP
#tlap A3 Piloting rather than wholesale implementing. Trying out things with one S or a small group of Ss first makes it so much easier to decide what/how to scale up to the classroom level. Ss see T adjusting from mistakes, great modeling.
A3: The cornerstone of a culture of innovation is relationships! They must be built on trust, respect, integrity, commitment to a common vision, safe, empowered, supported, encouraged, honest, and very BRAVE! #tlap
A4: When learner agency is fostered, students develop greater awareness for what they need to learn, what deeply matters to them, and become driven to persist when faced with challenges. Learning & innovation thrive when we create the conditions to truly empower learning. #TLAP
A3: To foster innovation in or schools we need to be open to new ideas and we need to be willing to say YES to them! We need to think about and dream about the possibilities and not limit ourselves or others. #tlap
A3: Teachers can learn from their students if they just allow time and creativity to flow. Students can lead their own innovative learning when given the right parameters #TLAP
A3: Positive relationships are important in an innovative culture so that teachers and students are comfortable taking risks and learning from mistakes. #tlap
A3 As an admin is making sure Ts feel they have that flexibility to allow for innovation to take place. Give Ts permission to take risk, be bold, and teach kids to do the same. #tlap
A4 Empowering our Ss, making them feel relevant, will make them part of the innovation culture To fully innovate Ss need to be a part of the process #tlap
A3- In Order to innovate failure and mistakes must be OK. No, expected! Teachers should not feel as though they are being criticized by the administration. #tlap
A3: We have to reward risk & be impressed by failure. We have to embrace the absurd ideas & encourage novelty. Our Ss have to know the value we see in stepping out on the edge. Only w/risk comes the reward of innovation. It's scary, but necessary. https://t.co/yCEejlphuG#tlap
This is how we've always done it needs to go, and it's not welcome back! Not to say that we haven't done great things in the past, but the mindset is dangerous. #tlap
A3- Opportunity. Opportunities of risk taking or taking on new challenges. Sounds easy...but sometimes we get stuck in this is how we have always done it kind of mentalities in education. #tlap
A4: Empowering students allows them to feel more confident in sharing their voice through their own selected medium. Once they feel comfortable & confident in their learning environment, they are more willing to stretch their thinking & try new things. #tlap
a4: when we empower S's in their learning we give them the opprotunity to love learning. It fosters a love of learning outside of the classroom because we give them a way to show their learning thats not about the T but about them #tlap
A4 When students are empowered they often go above and beyond—I am always taken aback by what students come back with. More often than not they will surprise us with their creativity. #tlap
A4. By empowering Ss in learning, they are controlling their learning, no boundaries can stop someone who is determined to learn and solve problems! #tlap
A4: When we TELL Ss they will show mastery through x, y, or z (usually just x), we are missing out on the opportunity to be amazed by the ingenuity of our Ss. Give them a chance to amaze you by giving options and removing barriers. #tlap
A4 a core principle of #gamification and other design ideas is choice and risk-taking/strategic planning/rapid feedback. These are engaging mechanics but also encourage new and creative thinking #tlap
A4 When I let my students’ become a daily reality, the result was, “Can you imagine how good we’d be at this if we had practiced all these years?” Yes. I can. And that’s when we applied for a grant together for $20k, lost, but succeeded anyway. #tlap See? https://t.co/yjAjcGSJCo
A4: If we empower students, they are not only participants in their learning, but also creators. Creators are typically innovative. I am constantly learning from my students and amazed at what they do. #tlap
A4: Give students a choice and voice and provide an encouraging environment. I notice that after we use a strategy or a new technology, students are quick to find other ways to use it. #tlap
We need to build a culture of yes! This is critical from leaders and by leaders I mean everyone. At least a willingness to support and take a risk. #tlap
A1- Innovation is defined in educational setting as an opportunity for learners to implement and try creative Solutions to problems they identify. #tlap
A4: Ss should be thinkers and problem solvers. Ss are naturally curious, and school should foster that curiosity. Curiosity+fresh thinking+problem solving = serious innovation at any age #TLAP
A4: When students take charge of their own learning they gain confidence in their abilities and become empowered. Students who are empowered will continue to innovate and ask the right questions #tlap
A4:Empowering students leads to innovation when learning is relevant, purposeful and celebrated. When students take ownership of their learning it is something that they are naturally curious about.Curiosity breeds risk-taking which in turn can spark learning to new levels. #tlap
A4 By empowering students and building their leadership we are encouraging students to be curious, to question, to research and to share their own thinking. We are allowing them to own their learning and have impact in their communities. #TLAP
A4: empowering Ss to own their learning also teaches them to innovate and evolve both in and out of the school setting. As adults how often are we changing and adapting to better both ourselves professionally and personally? Why not learn at the youngest of ages this skill! #tlap
A4: Empowered learners can and do take the learning beyond the classroom. Empowered learners come up with amazing things that we Ts wouldn't have thought of, and they encounter/solve problems we didn't realize existed. That leads to a culture of innovation. #tlap

A4: im a learner. My T empowers me by giving me choice & voice in how I approach a problem. My T emphasizes iteration & experimentation (failure nullifies). Innovation is the natural result. Even if my solution is not innovative - my process is. My communication is.
#TLAP
A4: Truly empowering Ss is based on trusting, supporting and genuinely valuing what each bring to the classroom & the world. Ss that learn in THAT kind of environment are free to risk, create & fail. When they can do that, and accept & support everyone else too... #tlap
A4: When you empower your students in their learning, relationships and trust between educators and peers are built, ownership and risk-taking within their learning occur, and innovation soars. #tlap
In my book, I share on elements of #gamification. Possibilities are endless! It's all about intrinsic motivation, rapid feedback, and an element of fun. Neuroscience demonstrates why the brain is receptive to it. And, when neuroscience meets education, it's my happy place! #TLAP
A4 a core principle of #gamification and other design ideas is choice and risk-taking/strategic planning/rapid feedback. These are engaging mechanics but also encourage new and creative thinking #tlap
A4 When I let my students’ ideas become a daily reality, the result was, “Can you imagine how good we’d be at this if we had practiced all these years?” Yes. And that’s when we applied for a grant together for $20k, lost, but succeeded anyway. #tlap See? https://t.co/yjAjcGSJCo
I love this idea. I'm thinking about having different hours pilot different portfolio options and help me decide what to roll out next year. I also have a group of students currently working on developing ways Minecraft is educational so they can keep it on their iPads. #tlap
A4 By building a commnity where kids have voice, choice, and the go-ahead to spread their wings, sky is the limit. BTW, this is true with adults too! #tlap
A4: When we foster innovation learners take take ownership over their learning and what they are passionate about. This leads to projects that mean more to them and that reach beyond their four walls. #tlap (Case in point... our recent #kinderart#collaboration
😉)
A4: Empowering Ss in their learning ❇️”models”❇️for them what it looks👀Like & feels👍🏼like! Using #pbl or 5E S-centered learning allows Ss to build their confidence & learn on their own, while developing skills & passions💥💜#geniushour#TLAP
gcouros: RT lauriesmcintosh: A1: I have always used gcouros definition of #innovation to guide lessons in our classroom. “Innovation is a way of thinking that creates something new and better”. #tlap#innovatorsmindsethttps://t.co/SoYqx9Jk3Z
A4: Empowering our Ss tells them we don't have all the possible answers, methods, or ideas. Educators simply don't know it all! Empowering kiddos fosters a culture where students are encouraged to do more and go further in a way that makes sense to them. That's innovation! #tlap
A4 Giving Ss the power over their learning gives them control and when we have control we tend to take pride and ownership- with that they Ss are validated and feel valued and hopefully see value in what they are accomplishing. #tlap
A5: Authentic learning experiences spark curiosity, increase relevancy, and increase intrinsic motivation. Students begin making meaningful connections to learning, inspiring them to go deeper in their journey as they feel more invested. #TLAP
Just a thought... But in a well designed structure students don't know they are 'failing'. Instead Ss and T are working together in am ongoing conversation based on feedback and growth. #tlap
A4: When we give students voice and choice, when we empower them to own their learning, we let them know that they matter. We let them know that we believe in them and that we think they are capable. #tlap
A5: You aren't very likely to be innovative with a worksheet that require one correct answer. Give Ss those authentic problems which help them think more critically and go deeper. This can also build empathy. #tlap
A4 By building a commnity where kids have voice, choice, and the go-ahead to spread their wings, sky is the limit. BTW, this is true with adults too! #tlap
A4: the key word is culture. The culture should be innovative. It matters not if the results are innovative (some will some won’t).
The process of agency, voice creating - that is where the innovation can live
#TLAP
A4 Empower students with choices, then be the guide on the side to help those who need idea fodder. Some will fly, some need to be gently pushed out of the nest #TLAP
#tlap A4 "And then, you graduate, leave your hometown or travel to another part of the world and realize the possibilities are a lot bigger than anyone told you." Article: Doctor. Lawyer. Engineer. https://t.co/lgoJJXjyUP
A5: Providing Ss with authentic learning experiences & audiences set the scene for innovation. That authenticity brings more engagement, thinking, & problem solving. It makes Ss CARE about the learning & doing. It ignites PASSION. It's magical. #tlap
A5: If we want our students to shoot for the stars, shouldn't we at least show them how to assemble a rocket? Innovation in all our content areas help us prepare our students for THEIR futures! #tlap@burgessdave@ERobbPrincipal@moler3031@khoggardGRT@_on11
A5 Authentic learning experiences spawn innovation through student voice/choice, relevancy, development of creativity and problem solving. It's difficult to innovate with a traditional mindset. Busting old paradigms is a good start to developing a culture of innovation. #tlap
A5 Authentic learning opportunities IMO are real they allow students to problem solve and it encourages them to use their individual talents, experiences and passions to solve problems and develop new ideas #TLAP
A5: What is the good of innovation for anything that is not relevant. We must create authentic learning experience so that students can understand the power of their innovation. This is how you change the world #tlap
A5: authentic learning experiences are memorable. Students are excited and involved with their learning. Who knows, may inspire a future career!! #tlap
A4: Because there's no telling what they can do if set free to do so. I love the book "Martians in the Classroom" by Rachel Mann & Stephen Sandford. If we quench our kids' creativity, then those "martians" aren't going to survive very long with duct tape and bubble gum. #tlap
A5 Authentic learning experiences are always important for students. Students need to see how their learning impacts their lives and their communities. If we want meaning behind our learning, if we want their engagement, we need to empower them with real situations. #TLAP
A5: Authentic learning is real world relevant stuff. If students feel that their learning is relevant, they are willing to engage, take risks, ask deep questions, and share their learning with others. #tlap
A5 We all, including Ss like to know why and have a purpose for what we are doing. If we can do that and make it engaging we have a chance at swing something spark! #tlap
#tlap It took me a long time to figure out I won't ever have it "set up," but that I will always be piloting something. It's ok to drop something too-when there are other pilots going on. Innovation means disruption but you don't have to toss out the whole thing every time.
I have decided that for the remainder of tonight's #tlap, I choose to use @JayBilly2's answers because he is incredible. That is all.
Killin' it tonight, Jay! I usually agree with you, but tonight the hallelujah chorus is singing when you tweet!
A5: What is the good of innovation for anything that is not relevant. We must create authentic learning experience so that students can understand the power of their innovation. This is how you change the world #tlap
A5: Authentic learning provides students (and staff) opportunities to make connections with people beyond the walls of the classroom. Connecting with others about topics that they are passionate about makes learning more real. #tlap
A5 Authentic experiences empower. We’ve seen (and experienced, as students ourselves) when learning experiences aren’t authentic. Let’s not make our students go through the same. #tlap
A5 The Make Learning relevant (or more relevant) for Ss, create a more natural curiousity, and lead to motivation from within—which is where genuine learning thrives. #tlap

And, to shift to empowerment, we need to first seek how to engage. Kids definitely remember the experiences that are created, and especially the ones that they are involved with creating! #tlap
A5. Authentic learning exp. are solving real world prob. and are crucial for a culture of innovation to develop critical thinkers problem solving skills that we can use to bring in innovation and make changes to education that will benefit our Ss in the future for learning. #tlap
A5: When a child leaves my classroom, I want them to remember their year. What they learned and how much fun they had doing it. That’s why authentic learning is so important. #tlap
A5: Authentic learning doesn't always have a controlled outcome and requires innovation. That's what makes it authentic (and SO awesome). 😊 Ss have an opportunity to solve problems, creatively think, & collaborate to grow an innovative mindset! #tlap
Starting fraction @numbertalks Part of improving the learning culture is making disagreement and mistakes ok. One S and only one S thought all three answers showed 1/4. After the rest of the class tried to convince her she was wrong we found out she was correct @cquisley#4thchat
A5: Innovation is born from NEED & INVESTMENT of energy and resources. Authentic learning experiences help Ss find their reason to be innovative because the learning MATTERS in a personal way, not just in theory! #tlap
A5: Without authenticity our students will not be able to creatively construct solutions to solve the problems of their future. The authenticity also enables them to develop belonging to community. #tlap
A5: If students cannot see relevance in what they are learning and they are not engaged, you'll be hard-pressed to foster an innovative environment. Finding ways to incorperate real-world problems/issues ignites passion and desire in their learning. #tlap
A5: Authentic learning experiences show students that learning is for real, that their ideas and actions can actually accomplish and change something, that they can make a difference. #tlap
A5: Because we live in an authentic world with all of its joys and imperfections and issues and opportunities and possibilities and ideas and hopes. We don't live in a textbook, standardized world with pre-determined "right" or "correct" answers. #tlap
My 14 year old loves to ask why he has to memorize some of the things he has to when he can simply Google the needed response. They too, know they need relevancy in learning and to be empowered! #tlap
A5 learning must be connected to something we care about, that connects with us deep down, otherwise it’s just a bunch of facts only for use during pub trivia #tlap
A6 It’s important to allow others to utilize their talents, show them their potential, and or help them find their talents! Everyone has something great to offer! #tlap
A6 The most important thing to do is to support and encourage others and hope to have the same. Educators want to know they are making a difference. Help others see their impact, their power and their strengths. Help them realize the amazing people they already are. #TLAP
A5: when Ss know this is “real” we are designing this, building this, writing this for our school, our class, our community, they get “serious”💥👉🏼more effort, better outcome🔥increased learning #NOLIMITS#TLAP
I get what you are saying...I still think there is a place for foundational knowledge though...yes Google can answer it...but what if Google's answer is wrong? #tlap
A6 continue to share my passions and model risk taking and live in a growth mindset encourage others to do the same by trusting them and empowering them to do the same #TLAP
A6 Its important that Ts point out the small positive things peers are doing to make difference So many Ts don't realize their potential because it goes unnoticed #tlap
A6: I'm always seeking opportunities to add value to colleagues. To involve others, invite them to collaborate with you and be intentional about recognizing their strengths. #TLAP
Yes! Students need to see that learning isn't something we just do because we're told. It's something we need to do to better ourselves, those around us and society. That's when it becomes real! #tlap
A6: I let my students know that they can be successful if they just try. I try to encourage both my students and my colleagues daily by sharing things that have worked and also admitting that sometimes lessons I try don't work. I just try to constantly be learning. #tlap
A6: By letting people and students work toward their passions we give them the power to show their greatness and share their strengths with the world. Autonomy + passion leads to greatness #tlap
A6: By letting people and students work toward their passions we give them the power to show their greatness and share their strengths with the world. Autonomy + passion leads to greatness #tlap
A6: By modeling the risk-taking, building relationships, encouraging them along the way, & by creating learning experiences for them whenever possible! Nothing like going all #tlap on a PD session! Movie theater themed PD was a hit!
A6: I am a visual learner and I love to see pictures of what others do in their classrooms. I will continue to post what we do in hopes that it benefits others as well. #tlap
A6: If we want to inspire others to use their strengths, we need to give people time to share their passions and their talents - and use them to make our schools and world better. And then we need to celebrate them and value them when they do. #tlap
A6: By letting people and students work toward their passions we give them the power to show their greatness and share their strengths with the world. Autonomy + passion leads to greatness #tlap
A6 create opportunities for others to share! Love to have people share their passions with me and @AndersonEdTech on @BeerEDUPod check out our google page and join us as a guest on the podcast #tlap#shamelessplug

A4: when students are empowered and passionate about what they're learning effort becomes easy, inquiry takes off, and students actively seek new ways to create and make products better. #tlap#innovatorsmindset
A6: I will be there to encourage and support my staff to take risks, try new things and then I will get out of their way and watch them live their excellence. Sometimes all they need to hear is "I believe in you." #tlap
A6: We have been continually working on creating a culture of peer collaboration through video conferencing. This tool has change the way our classroom works, our students interact, and our peers contributing. #tlaphttps://t.co/RBhmVbIRYk
Q6: as a sped teacher, I truly believe in the power of collaboration. When you bring everyone’s minds together (therapists and teachers) you can create amazing things for your students #tlap
A6: My #oneword is ASPIRE, so that’s what I’m gonna do! I’m aspiring to be inspiring through compassion, encouragement , collaboration, honesty, and my own courage & vulnerability. Sharing & building each other up goes a LONG way! #tlap
A7: My Innovation Engineers are working to finish up their 1st semester projects, so I'm looking forward to being there for whatever they may need, then shouting from the rooftops the amazingness they have created! #tlap
A6: It's important to recognize and acknowledge the strengths of others, especially at those times when they are having difficulty seeing it in themselves. #tlap
A6: I support my Mentor team in their professional development, I coach & guide them.....👉🏼then I try & model “risk taking” & “growth mindset”, ask for input, mainly provide multiple opportunities for them to develop, research & share their PASSIONS #TLAP 🏴☠️💥
Of course I agree completely! Have to challenge kids to think critically and dive deeper. Just think sometimes basic knowledge gets a bad name...tough at a job interview when they ask a basic knowledge question and Alexa or Siri can't help you answer ha. #tlap
A6: I personally thrive on words of affirmation, so that's the number one thing I try and do for others-- I affirm what they are doing right and encourage them to keep on doing it and to persevere against challenges and/or negativity.
#tlap

A6 I get the opportunity I support and empower students everyday and inspire teachers every so often, but I’m hoping to make it more of a weekly experience! The dream is 50/50; student support and teacher support! We’ll see what happens! Wish me luck! #tlap
Sorry, I missed #tlap tonight friends!!! @ElisaBostwick, no doubt you rocked it! Can’t wait to scroll back through the feed tonight...and get my hands on your book! #LEAPeffect
A7 As I begin a new semester in 2.5 weeks, I am ready to take the L.E.A.P. and create new magical experiences for students. Special mailouts being prepared this week to help pave the way for innovative, heart-learning. Time to be different, brave, amazing. #TLAP
A7: This year #2019 I want to encourage more Ts to get into leadership, dare I say administration? It’s not the dark-side once thought of in the past. Best job ever! #tlap
A7: We have been taking small steps to build an culture of innovation. I'd love to have the power to blow it all up and start fresh and do school differently. Make innovation, creativity, curiosity, collaboration, and kindness our starting points #tlap
A7: Next step for me is to empower more Ts in my D to culture innovation within their classrooms as they empower learners & open the doors/flatten walls to authentic audiences. #tlap
A7 I plan on doing some flash lessons in classrooms this semester to help students identify their passions and find connections to real world issues and how they can contribute to to solving problems through their passions #TLAP
A6 I get the opportunity to support and empower students everyday and inspire teachers every so often, but I’m hoping to make it more of a weekly experience! The dream is 50/50; student support and teacher support! We’ll see what happens! Wish me luck! #tlap
I completely agree, I would never say there isn't a need for basic knowledge. Every individual requires foundational learning. However, some things aren't necessary to memorize, and not everything can be stored in long term memory. #tlap
A7: If I want our students to be innovative, I need to empower our teachers to be innovative and to come up with solutions and new ideas. And then I need to be willing to listen and help turn those ideas into reality. #tlap
A7: I think trying a new technology app or strategy that I haven't before. I have a lot of fear about failing, but I am learning to let go of the fear and take the L.E.A.P. #tlap
A6: It's important to recognize and acknowledge the strengths of others, especially at those times when they are having difficulty seeing it in themselves. #tlap
A7: As Principal I am looking to encourage more of my staff to take the "innovative" leap. We are finishing up reading #tlap right now and will be starting a 30 day hook challenge in February. We will see how innovative we can be! #tlap
A7: it’s my goal for the rest of the year! I never feel like I’m done. 😆
I plan to continue to help develop unit plans for #cangss, work through lessons, and find ways to tie it to my writers workshop and classroom PBL/Design Thinking projects in my classroom Makerspace. #tlap
A7 Tomorrow I will make more of a conscious effort to add value to others. We must support each other in our journey toward greatness. Stop competing for accolades and and start collaborating for synergistic results! #tlap
A6: So many times I speak w/colleagues who have what they say is an impossble, crazy, or absurd idea. Just like our Ss, they usually talk themselves out of it. But even if one student benefits, it isn't crazy at all! Be crazy! Be bold! Be absurd! Make it matter. #tlap
I would enjoy hearing more on this, Laura! Flattening the walls helps our learners to gain a better understanding of the world they're in. #tlap#LEAPeffect
A7: Next step for me is to empower more Ts in my D to culture innovation within their classrooms as they empower learners & open the doors/flatten walls to authentic audiences. #tlap
Thank YOU for joining us to talk fostering a culture of innovation tonight on #TLAP! Together, we can create the #LEAPeffect in our schools and classrooms!
Educators , there is no room for closed doors, jealousy or competition between teachers or schools. All of our students deserve the best education possible. This means sharing, collaboration and building each other up, both within a school and between schools.
A7: I don't always have to be the sage on the stage or always have to know everything about something before sharing it with others. Instead, I like presenting a topic or idea or problem - or even a new tech - and creating an environment where we are all learning together. #tlap
