We are just about ready for Q1; looking like another great group this evening!
Hello Everyone. Deb from Cresco checking in tonight . HS ELA
Q1: What does a classroom that is focused on learning that sticks look like, sound like, and feel like to you?
Hi Rita from Wisconsin (but used to be from IA) joining you!
Hello .
I'm Brant.
MS principal from Wyoming.
...currently in line at dairy Queen :)
Ashley Carter- Newton High Social Studies
Welcome, Rita! We are happy to have you.
Welcome, Brant! Nice work!
What a nice welcome. Thanks and
A1: Students have fun in a classroom where learning sticks! There interests & needs are honored
A1: Hands on activities where it's student centered, not the teacher giving lectures the whole time. https://t.co/gYPyj9XFtj
Q1: What does a classroom that is focused on learning that sticks look like, sound like, and feel like to you?
A1: There is engagement, excitement, & energy. You can see the collaboration, not just with the Ss but with the teacher as well!
Welcome to the chat, Ashley!
A1: Learning sticks in a classroom where Ss are engaged, talking about learning, and where you can feel the energy in the room.
A1: It's not silent. Ss ask questions, the teacher is active
A1 (continued): It can be noisy but it's a controlled chaos sort of culture.
A1 highly engaged classroom where T and Ss are learning together. Real world connections and opportunity for student choice
A1) It is flexible, allows student ownership, teacher is confident but not controlling unnecessarily.
A1: LOOKS: Focus on setting and achieving goals, reteach, extend, include S preference and voice / choice.
A1: FEELS LIKE: All students feel like their learning matters. And Ts feel they are making a difference!
A1: SOUNDS LIKE: Learning — lots of it. Focused on student needs.
A1 ss can tell what the learning targets and goals are. End of class, ss can explain what they learned
A1 Can be noisy, chaotic, energetic. Students taking control of their learning. Tchr is a resource
A1: Engagement of students with peers and teacher, choices for learning environment, styles, and activities
A1 (continued: it can be noisy but it's a controlled chaos type of culture. Ss are happy and engaged.
Honoring interest and student voice is HUGE!
That is huge! Students are taking control of their learning through voice and choice!
A1: Students engaged- more St talk than T talk. St questions drive the discussion.
A1: When I think of learning that sticks, I think of high levels of engagement, Ss doing meaningful work, and lots of talking.
A1: Engagement, excitement, enthusiasm, energy, these "e"s all over the responses tonight! LOVE IT!!!
A1: Looks like all kinds. Some days, quiet individual work, some days loud & up and moving; feels like you want to be part of it.
A1 And the learning doesn't have to be happening in the classroom!
STUDENT-CENTERED is key. The students are the center of the learning, not the teacher.
Agreed with targets and goals! Student ownership and self-reflection of learning has HUGE impact!
goal setting and working towards those can lead to students taking ownership of their learning
A1. Students collaborating, T is moving around the room asking questions that clear misconceptions and move Ss to next level
A#1 - I like what Deb Day said - students taking control of their learning - not afraid to fail - taking chances & being creative
YES! It can look, feel, sound different at different times & w/ different teachers or students.
There isn't a certain sound or look, but their is a feeling of belief and ownership.
So true. We need to make sure we have spaces for all kinds of learning.
giving the students the understanding that mistakes are proof that we are trying!
A1) T's interest & genuine enjoyment for being there cannot be missed. Not to say all styles are the same.
A1: There isn't a certain sound or look but there is a feeling of belief and ownership.
YES! Not just posted… but Ss and Ts know and can say what they are learning!
A1.2: Another key component from my perspective is student choice. Kids having choice in their learning. Investment.
If we want students engaged, we need to give them the time to find and pursue their own passions!
A1: Can't emphasize enough that in effective classrooms there is often lots of laughter! Kids are human, humans like fun!
the teacher must also believe that every single kid in that room CAN and WILL Learn!
choice boards, menus, etc. are HUGE motivators with incredible results!
Love this! Kids take the reigns! https://t.co/Ox0QK1ebTM
A1 Can be noisy, chaotic, energetic. Students taking control of their learning. Tchr is a resource
great resource. Thanks for sharing.
Choice is another big hitter for A1! https://t.co/v3LEEN4jbm
A1: Engagement of students with peers and teacher, choices for learning environment, styles, and activities
A1 cont: Energy and passion from T and St. Student choice when possible.
Oh yes....laughter is a key to an effective classroom from both teacher and students https://t.co/Vo11yPNvSA
A1: Can't emphasize enough that in effective classrooms there is often lots of laughter! Kids are human, humans like fun!
We are ready for Q2 already!
Q2: What role do school staff other than teachers (admin, ICs, paras, etc) play in learning that sticks?
A2: Staff other than Ts need to encourage risk taking, model expectations, have high energy, and support learning at all costs.
Working together is SO important!
A2: All hands on deck, all accountable….we share the responsibility of helping all Ss succeed and we work together to accomplish.
A2: Admins support their staff in trying new things- paras can be active participants
A2 Sometimes our Ss need mentors for learning outside of what the teacher can provide. Others can be great resources
A 2) All within school have to be led in ways that make them feel like legitimate full partners in the quality of S experience.
A2 getting any resources needed, displaying learning/school is fun and worth it, encouraging learning
So true! Effective teachers are happy teachers and visa versa.
A2: Additional staff need to be supportive and work together! Having a common goal for students is very powerful!
Q2 for https://t.co/dmINvar6h4
Q2: What role do school staff other than teachers (admin, ICs, paras, etc) play in learning that sticks?
A2: Every single person in the building must believe they impact the ultimate goal of student learning. Every person has value.
A2: Learning does not just happen in a classroom...all people on the campus have a role in ensuring Ss learn what we need them to!
A2 - Be visible, available, build relationships with Ss, Teachers, & Families & teach a class now and then!
A2 In HS, I've had great paras who take groups of kids and help them with projects, keeping organized, breaking down assign
A2: Admins can model and support. Encourage trying new things. All can feedback for growth.
a great culture builder knowing that everyone has value.
Yes. This is the ultimate goal. https://t.co/12cfr9MFoR
A2: Every single person in the building must believe they impact the ultimate goal of student learning. Every person has value.
A village that knows their purpose not just their job.
A2: EVERYONE plays a role in teaching at a school. Through modeling, talking, working w/ kids, ect
A3 (continued): Admins (sup ) sat with a kinder @ read to someone and had the ss read to her. That's powerful!
A2 part A. IC- Help by providing resources..if free walk around room and help by asking questions.
A2 (continued): Admins (sup ) sat with a kinder @ read to someone and had the ss read to her. That's powerful!
A2: All of us have an obligation to be a witness to the good within our settings. We all have a role to play to support kids.
It is important to cultivate it and promote it. Everyone makes a difference no matter the job title.
A3: Our custodians are VERY well loved, respected, & listened to by our stds. They teach every day.
Building relationships is a piece that can’t be overlooked! https://t.co/tNvu8lj0aq
A2 - Be visible, available, build relationships with Ss, Teachers, & Families & teach a class now and then!
def, in order for ss to achieve anything they need to know ts support them 100%.
A2.2: Admin can be intentional with the creation of the schedule to maximize instruction. Management that leads to instruction.
A2: Should also mention peer mentors and peer tutors. They are often an underused but amazing resource
A2 Part B- Admin: Encourage staff to take risks with new ideas. Give them the time to try strategies..encourage reflection.
Q3: What barriers currently exist within our system that would prevent opportunities for learning that sticks?
A1 - Love it when I hear, "can we do, play, try ... in order 2 or expand on a concept. A-2 - All need to contribute to the effort.
And model taking risks, too! Yes!
A3: Some of the barriers are the resistance to change, comfort zones, doing what is easy, and admin/community support.
yes every person in our schools matter and can teach Ss valuable lessons.
A huge challenge sometimes. I'm happy to be 6 weeks in without having an "adjusted" schedule yet.
https://t.co/EbeMhEyAbB
A2.2: Admin can be intentional with the creation of the schedule to maximize instruction. Management that leads to instruction.
A2 Most work in a school bc they want Ss to succeed, our job to get all to believe in vision that will accomplish just that!
A3 Schedules. Who stops learning when a bell rings?
A3: A rush to "cover curriculum", too many worksheets that waist time
A3: Sometimes the biggest barrier is between our own two ears. Be confident and try things that are best for kids.
A3: Many responsibilities on Ts tables -- full plates have have to prioritize. Also, many commitments on Ss plate. All excuses...
A3 - stuck in the traditional method of "this is how I learned". Or afraid of failing at something new.
Hey Erik! Glad you are here!
That language is such great evidence that risks are honored!
Agree with this completely! Learning should not be always placed on a timeline of six weeks!
A3 Learning spaces. Need flexible space, flexible rooms
A3:
-Overemphasis on testing
-Undertrained and overworked teachers
-Micromanaging administrators
Do NOT RT this! *waste not *waist! LOL! https://t.co/c2JKYQPyaf
A3: A rush to "cover curriculum", too many worksheets that waist time
A3) Fear, tradition, lack of time to plan/explore, T overloaded w multiple preps, coaching 3 sports, sponsoring 6 activities
A3: Admins and Ts who do things because "we've always done it this way"
A3: Not letting go of traditional methods, ideas, curriculum by teachers, administration, community, and parents.
A3: Time for reflection and processing.
A3 Testing. Next week I will lose four class periods with my 8th graders right in the middle of writing
not part of the chat, but saw it in my feed, true & important to realize the impact of certain decisions
A3: Ts thinking of standards as a check off list rather than essential understanding...teaching vs deep learning
A#: I would also argue the over emphasis on assessments that do not provide valuable information to inform instruction.
A3 district imposed curriculum time lines. "I must be done with the chemistry until on X week." So, timing
Hopeful that modeling taking risks and failing and then getting back up helps with some of this.
A3.2) Admins not creating, to the extent possible, environments that support Ts taking a breath, reaching out & giving it a try.
A3: School Boards & Admin at times create policy for learning rather than allowing teachers to create real learning opportunities.
A3. A barrier could be lack of parent understanding. This could be remedied by parent meetings and communication with them.
Glad to at least catch the tail end of .
yep
https://t.co/GVCEJIFsRF
A3.2) Admins not creating, to the extent possible, environments that support Ts taking a breath, reaching out & giving it a try.
A3 lack of clarity about curricular changes or initiatives, limited support, not focusing on the Ss in front of us
Learning should never be a checklist!! Good to see you here tonight Ann!
A3 (continued): ts not willing to learn and change with the times. It hurts the ss.
A3: Refusal to differentiate
We’re exploring flexible seating at this year thanks to our PTO. Kids are LOVING it! https://t.co/SAJVqAchGc
A3 Learning spaces. Need flexible space, flexible rooms
A3: Over-emphasis on pacing guides where you must be done with certain content by certain date. Not good for deep learning.
I love my flexible seating and so do my kids.
reflection is huge for both ts and Ss!
Well, I would have to agree with that. What's good for students is also good for teachers
so true. No two classes or group of students are the same.
Basically my frustration! https://t.co/XAON6agh9G
A3: Over-emphasis on pacing guides where you must be done with certain content by certain date. Not good for deep learning.
Q4 is coming up in one minute!
A3.3) Scripted, teacher-proof curriculum that is rigidly presented & ignores T professional judgment & artistry.
oooo! A bonus snickers chunk in my M&Ms blizzard :)
Great point! I never understood needing to stick to a pacing guide. Shouldn't we adjust based on our students?!
Most of the furniture in my classroom came from family and friends.
I think fear is huge because ts are afraid of the unknown and failure b/ we need to embrace it so our ss do too.
Yes, and shouldn't we treat our teachers as professionals who have excellent decision making skills? https://t.co/pyTQBft8V4
Great point! I never understood needing to stick to a pacing guide. Shouldn't we adjust based on our students?!
Q4: If we want our students to experience learning that sticks, how do we prepare educators to deliver this type of instruction?
Yes, hard to get many to take shot in era of high stakes accountability (AKA blame) & desperation for short term gain
A4 1st I think we have to know our kids. What is it that they need? Pacing should be somewhat different every year
it's important to be cognizant of this, Ts should have some level of autonomy in there classroom
You nailed that. Communication is key. no such thing as over-communicating with things like this. https://t.co/lgUzzRrJ6F
A3. A barrier could be lack of parent understanding. This could be remedied by parent meetings and communication with them.
A4: Support new Ts, encourage risk taking, embrace failure, and model your expectations.
Yes-if they r professional-lots of "emergency certifications" happening nation-wide Need to advocate 4 our profession
A4: We must be willing to model, eliminate barriers, and create an environment of "Yes" that allows teachers be be innovative.
I like this idea, but it will get messy in a hurry. Has to be some type of pacing deadlines...but how to find balance
A4 Tchrs also need to reflect on units and lessons. What worked? What didn't? How can I improve this--or get rid of it?
A4: Lead the way...share your own PD journey...take risks and give Ts time and support to do the same!
A4: Coaching, modeling, collaborative teams, differentiation for Ts to model how to do with with Ss.
A4) Higher ed & Teacher Prep has to model good teaching, period. Partnerships, professors growing, prins modeling constant growth
A4: SLOW DOWN! Select 1-2 building goals and filter everything through them...build up not across
HOW in the world can this even be allowed with current needs of our Ss!?
Yes! https://t.co/15yQsw92yZ
A4: We must be willing to model, eliminate barriers, and create an environment of "Yes" that allows teachers be be innovative.
admin should be cognizant if this & make sure to allow Ts a certain level of autonomy in their classrooms
A4: Allowing teachers of all levels to share, communicate, model, observe, learn from each other. Reflection. Differentiated PD
A4: We know so much more about cognitive functioning than we did 10+ years ago. We need to focus on the science of learning
A4 take risks. Always remember to keep the students first.
A4 - As put it probably the wrong way. When evaluating I have great ideas. When delivering, I lecture. Go figure.
A4: Teachers must feel like they can go out on a limb & try what is best for kids and that the leaders are out there w/ them.
True. However, I would rather have 8 units of instruction understood on a deep level than "covered" 12.
A4 trust teachers and create the culture that allows for risk taking and innovation. Celebrate T and S change and growth
A4: Know your learning target. Know your students. Differentiate to meet std needs & check to see that they meet targets.
A4 Tchrs also need the time to think about and change instruction. Individualized PD is a great way to allow this
Yes. School with ten goals really has none. I think Elmore said that. Whoever it was nailed it. https://t.co/oAgH8jjhb2
A4: SLOW DOWN! Select 1-2 building goals and filter everything through them...build up not across
what she said
https://t.co/f2U5nplKQo
A4: Allowing teachers of all levels to share, communicate, model, observe, learn from each other. Reflection. Differentiated PD
Lots of anti-public ed sentiment in politics these days.
you bet. Failure is all part of the process of moving forward.
A4: We need educators that understand formative assessments, how to analyze them, and ways to differentiate. .
Bang. https://t.co/7a7oMVX7MA
A4: Teachers must feel like they can go out on a limb & try what is best for kids and that the leaders are out there w/ them.
A4: Provide teachers with an atmosphere of innovation and risk taking. Provide PD that is relevant to them and their needs.
A4 care less about data/test scores and more about creating meaningful learning experiences for kids.
I'm half tempted to tell all my teachers to cut their priority standards in half. Teach deeper!
Can you mandate simplification?
A4: A simple technique that is high leverage for learning that sticks is asking open-ended questions that provoke thought.
A4: Encourage trs to earn certification. National boards certified trs tend to be more effective https://t.co/n7L3uocs89
agreed. Ss need to have white matter connections to real life experiences in order to learn!
A4 Take whatever new initiative you have and set it on fire. Find 1 thing and get really good at it before starting something new
I want to push back on that a bit-How about care MORE about collecting MEANINGFULdata so you can create meaningful exp?
We are just about ready for Q5!
Q5: What frameworks, structures, techniques, and questions can be used to open up channels for learning that sticks?
Dr. Pace just won Twitter tonight.
Everyone works toward a common goal - Ss and Ts all work together toward the goal. https://t.co/sdBxW5pViz
A4: SLOW DOWN! Select 1-2 building goals and filter everything through them...build up not across
I would agree that data drives good teaching but 99% of what we currently use is "data for the sake of data"
A4: use research...apply Hattie's work. Focus on 1 or 2 of the BEST strategies and apply them...dont get distracted
A5: The PLC process is a must, support Edcamp style PD, and encourage participation in SM and chats just like this!
A5 - I wonder about teaching Ts to use ORID questioning in their classrooms. Anyone ever done this?
A5: Differentiated groups, using S voice and choice, stations or self-directed learning spots.
AMEN to Edcamp-style PD! Learning w/ and from each other! https://t.co/neKFzT55ad
A5: The PLC process is a must, support Edcamp style PD, and encourage participation in SM and chats just like this!
A5) Search for, find, & model & protect time for Ts to talk about the ART (& some science) of their craft.
A5: We are having our Ts lean heavily on each other. T led coaching and instructional rounds.
So excited to see the results!
A5 (continued): **useful tech (not a babysitter). Have an area for creation and exploration of own interests.
A5: A strong starting point is knowing your kids and what makes them tick. Design learning opportunities that tap their interests.
A5 PLCs are a must. Have seen and as well as other Ts have success with guided math.
TRUE THAT! Let’s move out of the recall / rote knowledge level of higher-order thinking!
Exploit their passions!
https://t.co/QhVSM0urpy
A5: A strong starting point is knowing your kids and what makes them tick. Design learning opportunities that tap their interests.
A5.2: I am also a firm believer in protected time for teachers to collaborate, plan, analyze results, talk about kids, etc.
thanks for the feedback! 🙂
A5 Blended learning is a great tool. I like having kids figure out things for themselves when provided with necessary tools
A5: Just like Ss, Ts need to have 1-2 goals and make it a priority. Go deep and rigorous into our own practice
A5 fully believe that it is not "your" curriculum, class, assignment and give ownership to Ss via choice, voice, and passion
How is it time for Q6 already?! Coming up in one minute.
We just never seem to have enough time to do these things. https://t.co/0T8IA745ep
A5.2: I am also a firm believer in protected time for teachers to collaborate, plan, analyze results, talk about kids, etc.
Q6: How do assessment measures and technology applications play a role in learning that sticks?
A5: Getting to know your students, and creating an atmosphere where they can showcase their choice in learning; when and how.
A5 I've been having kids evaluate themselves and reflect on that learning a bit more this year. Helps w/understanding why
Trying this as well. Amazed at the power of this for Ss.
that's where you get their buy in.
Yes. I really like what kids are getting out of it
will be starting in 15m, stop on by
A6: Both give options...assessment let's us know how to help students on their journey, tech gives them the tools to get there!
A6 - Assessments must still be given in a way that depicts how Ss will apply what they learned to their own lives.
A6: Assessments must assesses standards and learning targets and technology can support Ss along the journey of learning these.
A6: Sharing success criteria is an essential part of learning that sticks.
Self-reflection is imperative to gauge understanding! So great, Deb! https://t.co/HeQ8MSoItW
A5 I've been having kids evaluate themselves and reflect on that learning a bit more this year. Helps w/understanding why
A6(2) - Technology is a collaboration tool that allows Ss to take what they learned and help effect other peoples lives.
A6: Use it! Set goals and use assessment results to modify teaching and monitor progress toward goals!
A6) It can't be ABOUT assessment or the technology. Has to be about S learning & T growing. Assessment/tech are tools to go there
A6: When we have the opportunity to assess Ss in an authentic manner that truly shows what they know, we are in a good place.
A6 formative assessments guide instruction. Technology can provide different opportunities for students.
A6: Simply are they used in meaningful ways? Does it improve instruction and learning?
A6.2: Technology does not lead to learning that sticks, doing meaningful work does.
A6: If you use tools like or you can do both...assess Ss & see where they are...and Ss love 'em!
Positive Peer Culture - Kids challenging, supporting and holding each other accountable for learning is also pivotal to growth!
A6: Tech sure can help gather real time assessment feedback. Helps Ts make in the moment instructional adjustments.
A6: keeping in mind primary user of assessment is Student! "What do I know about where to go from here from this assessment?"
A6: Tech. is the tool for learning. Should a student know how to make a Presentation or use Tech to create a learning database?
We are just about ready for our final question of the evening.
A6 Tech is a great TOOL, but the use of it should be authentic. Not just using tech to say we used it.
A6: Technology can be an amazing TOOL to make learning stick
Q7: What is your plan to bring more opportunities for learning that sticks to your environment?
yes ts need to analyze the progress of their ss and adjust to that.
A6 Assessments need to be authentic. To show what we really learned. I'm not sure T/F and Mult Choice tests always do that
A6: Assessments are tools designed to measure whether students learned what was intended & help teachers decide where to go next.
And we don't train them nearly as well as we did when they had were learning to use the loo
A7: Dif types of activities to fit ss interest in reading and math rounds. Tech and non tech. https://t.co/asn63Our0w
Q7: What is your plan to bring more opportunities for learning that sticks to your environment?
A7: Model what I expect, encourage risk taking/failure and go to work everyday looking to get better at what I do.
A7: Ask Ts what they need more from me. Perhaps group coaching or small group coaching would benefit some Ts not ready for 1:1.
A7: Include opportunities for student goal setting/reflection, choice, and strong engagement daily. Be purposeful in planning.
ss def need to see ts fail but to learn from it and go on. Glad you'll be modeling it too.
A7 continue to build relationships and work on the culture that supports risk taking.
A7: real world PBL for at risk Ss, setting up, ordering, bookkeeping our schoolstore. cross content work not just for 'high' Ss!
A7: Provide opportunities for students to tell me what they need for learning & create lessons where they choose the outcomes.
A7: Need to utilize ALL my resources to make learning meaningful no matter how busy I am coaching and being a mom. Ss deserve it
Yep. All that. :)
https://t.co/rfuzt65O0H
A7: Include opportunities for student goal setting/reflection, choice, and strong engagement daily. Be purposeful in planning.
