#CUEchat is both a weekly Twitter chat and an ongoing conversation across social media that connects CUE members, resources, and new ideas. Each week is powered by a unique voice.

My name is Emma Larson and I am a future educator, just wanted to check out what an education chat was all about! I attend UW-Platteville in Wisconsin and and I love Sorry! #cuechat
A1) You can set goals and even commit to them, but without a clear pathway or at least general direction, it’s hard to know the steps to take to get there or even who can help with hazards along the way. Ooh, good analogy to board games. Gotta know the strategy & moves! #cuechat
We are so glad you could join us and that #cuechat could be your first chat! Make sure to follow peeps here and grow your #PLN. We love to support one another! #WeAreCUE
Love the connection, Pam! Much deeper than I realized! Really we were inspired by the photo we pulled from the internet with the scrabble letter spelling "GOALS" haha! #cuechat
A1) Sometimes my friends and I will set goals together, but it's very hard when you see other achieve their goals but you're not meeting that same goal. Sometimes that can be discouraging and can lead to wanting to give up on the goal all together. #cuechat

A1 I think the reason some people set goals but don't always reach them is because they set unrealistic goals. Some people may set a goal that seems like a good idea but in reality it is too hard for them to achieve right away #cuechat

Goals give us a direction but it is the daily systems we have in place that determine whether we make progress or not.

A2: Breaking bad habits is often a goal of mine - NOT biting my nails. Sometimes I go years without doing it, other times I have a hard time not backsliding...guess I need a new system? #cuechat
A2 Systems are key for my success...but are they for everyone? I'm not sure...sometimes stepping away from our systems/comfort zone produces the push we need to meet our goals.
#cuechat
A2) Love systems thinking! From people to resources to timelines and organizational structures. These are what can clear and define that pathway to your goals. I think mentors are a HUGE wheel in this engine. #cuechat
A1: Goals are like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, hoping won't make them come true. It takes planning, effort, and often a lot of support from others. #cueldi#cuechat
I have a system approach with math this year - pretest - teaching, learning, sharing - posttest - chart and cheer growth - REPEAT! See lots of success! #cuechat
The project is designed to foster natural, organic, meaningful tech Integration, but only as admin fosters culture of Innovation and encourages risk taking does the Cardinal Innovation Center buzz with business #cuechat
Q3: Goals Are Momentary
“Achieving a goal only changes your life for the moment. When you solve problems at the results level, you only solve them temporarily.”
#cuechat#cueldi
A2: I think this is related to my A1, planning is required but so is effort - in the right direction. But it also requires support systems, your PLN, your admin, mentors, spouses and more. #cueldi#cuechat
A3: I guess achieving the goal can be momentary but there is usually a lasting affect, experience or knowledge you come away with... #cuechat Still chewing on this one...
A3: That's why I stopped New Year's Resolutions. They aren't life changes...just temporary adjustments before going back to the cruise control of life #CUEChat

“Achieving a goal only changes your life for the moment. When you solve problems at the results level, you only solve them temporarily.”
#cuechat#cueldi
A3: Reminds me of the adage of it being about the journey, not the destination. In EDU, that's where authentic learning takes place, not the test scores. #cuechat

We need to 'celebrate' the learning opportunities in failures rather than being afraid to start or ashamed that failure took place. More growth in mistakes than first time luck. #cueldi#cuechat
This question is also really making me think. 🤔 sometimes I need to set goals or I’ll never achieve what I want! But also, goals are easy to break, so if only I could solve the problem, perhaps I wouldn’t need to set goals to see the change that I want
A1: I think lots of people don't reach their goals because their goals are too ambitious or they just don't put in the time and practice it takes to achieve the goal #cuechat
A3 Yes - we've become an education system that is only satisfied with 'right' answers (thanks, NCLB) and we need to reverse that way of thinking to celebrate the process, not always the product
#cuechat
I think sometimes we also just don't know where to start... it's like when students say they want to be better writers. HOW? What does that even mean? #CUEChat
Q4: Goals Restrict Your Happiness
“Once I reach my goal, then I’ll be happy.” The problem with a goals-first mentality is that you’re continually putting happiness off until the next milestone.
#cuechat#cueldi
A4: It's that whole "money can't buy happiness, but I'd like to try.." I think you have to have some sort of happiness already to work towards a goal because you need that positive focus. #CUEChat

We have a new way of grading our writing this year that separates it into 3 sets of points: organization, elaboration and Punctuation etc. It's helped me guide more clearly... #cuechat
A4) the way I look at goals is “while I’m working on reaching my goal, I am happy seeing how focused and dedicated I am towards hitting my goal” so I believe that every time I put effort towards reaching my goal that makes me happy, not just the end result #cuechat
Nice. I used to only grade certain elements w/my 7th graders. If we were working on sentence details and persuasion, that was the feedback I provided. It's overwhelming to get a postmortem & Ss can't process it all #CUEChat
Sorry that was sort of a tangent and didn't really address your point. Which I think was great writing is elusive - you can't always point to the elements that go together to make the magic happen. #cuechat

Q4) I agree it’s fleeting to equate goal attainment with happiness, yes it makes you happy but you have to find happiness in daily events. And be mindful of times when you really are happy. Don’t wait for that end goal to find your happiness. #cuechat
A3: Or is achieving a goal just a time for a momentary celebration? How did the journey of achieving the goal change you? As a educator a goal like a graduate degree or certification requires efforts & learning that should have led to growth and not just a title. #cuechat#cueldi
A4: It really is those little things that fill a life with beauty. Not the pics we post on SM but the quiet moments we share with others, beholding the beauty of nature, witnessing sacrificial love.... #cuechat
Q5: Goals are at odds with long-term progress
“Once I reach my goal, then I’ll be happy.” The problem with a goals-first mentality is that you’re continually putting happiness off until the next milestone.
#cuechat#cueldi
I think I heard somewhere that serving on a CUE affiliate board will not only help you achieve goals but will also bring you immense happiness? 🤔#cuechat
A5: I do know that if I work myself into the ground to achieve something then I sometimes flip back the opposite way. It's like I need a break from it all. If I instead made small changes I guess I would stay more steady. It's very similar to my #bloodsugar. Hmm. #cuechat
A5: What if my main goal is something more intangible? To be a better teacher, do more with personalization, etc. Then the small goals that help me on that journey can be small things to celebrate as part of the path. #cuechat#cueldi
I guess in those cases there isn't a huge point where you feel you have accomplished the goal and now you're done. It is more of a life-long ambition. #cuechat
"Q6: Fall In Love With Systems
Goals can provide direction and even push you forward in the short-term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win.
#cuechat#cueldi"
A6: It seems like James Clear is saying that goals have their place in the scheme of things but that if we don't enjoy the getting there we are cheating ourselves out of an enjoyable life. #cuechat
Yeah, I think that's where he is going. The article is a good read. We excerpted here - it is actually excerpts from the 1st chap of his book Atomic Habits. Haven't read that yet. #cuechat
