#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Welcome all to #K12ArtChat - I’m Carl Hooker - Director of Innovation & Digital Learning in Austin, TX - Introduce yourself with your name, what you do, and YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL….
Q1 - On Sunday night, 60 minutes had a report on screen time and the youth brain. How do you handle concerns/fears around screen time in your classroom? https://t.co/6thLbglcLP#K12ArtChat
I'm not a classroom teacher, but one of the reasons I'm interested in this topic is my love for being part of online communities like this and participating in efforts related to digital citizenship. I acknowledge concern but discourage fear, which teaches nothing. #K12ArtChat A1

A1 It is important to acknowledge the worry but to inform Ps that we use our devices in the service of learning. There is active engagement, development of important skills, emphasis on dig lit, and a move towards creation rather than consuming. #K12ArtChat#edtechchat
A1)From personal experience, these kids grow up in a blink of an eye. They get behind wheel of a car and we expect them to make split second decisions. We need to teach them how to use, what’s appropriate and and moderation. Like the song goes Teach the children well..#K12ArtChat
Hi, I’m Laura from Georgia. Just got home from a concert & art show. Check out this 8th grade work! I can’t stop thinking about it! #K12ArtChat#cobbARTrocks
Merry Mullins 2-5 Art Teacher from Georgia. My spirit animal is a Bear because I like to sleep, give warm hugs and am very protective of my students. 🐻 #K12ArtChat
Here’s my response to Q1 - Remember that screen time is a fluid judgment and it’s not all created equal. Here’s a graphic I made recently around the topic - #K12ArtChat
A2 A fear is that we will get all our feedback and self worth from the screen and social media connections. Social construction of reality is a real concern for me moving forward. #K12ArtChat
“Social Media Anxiety Disorder” is a real thing. It’s like reality TV - we only see what people choose to show it. It’s just our best self, but can be depressing if you think all of life is like that. #K12ArtChat

I'm realizing how surprising it is that I haven't thought much about it. But now I'm thinking the biggest dangers are manifesting themselves now -- cyberwarfare that can disrupt a nation and world as much as actual warfare and needs to be combated as seriously. #K12ArtChat A2
A2: I am super excited to learn how the way we educate is going to get “flipped turned upside down.” Yet I fear others will destroy the joy in teaching before that happens. #k12ArtChat
A2) #k12artchat. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I love trying new things. Fail means first attempt at learning. Whichis good, but you have to try it out and know how to use it before teaching. Tech is no different.
A2: I know it has nothing to do with art BUT my 19 year old daughter can’t figure out how to drive anywhere without using GPS. I’m talking about places like our church that we go to 2 days a week and have done so her entire life. #K12ArtChat
For our teens and tweens who are turning outward for feedback and modeling only see the picture perfect moments that others choose to publish. This distorts our reality and makes us think that our troubles and blemishes are unusual. #K12ArtChat
A2 - I think there is a healthy fear around artificial intelligence. It can help us so much…but I’m sure Alexa is listening to my conversations with my kids and judging me as a parent. :) #k12artchat
I hate getting lost and am grateful for GPS showing me the way. But I also love maps, and don't want future generations to literally lose their sense of direction. There are benefits of sometimes literally and figuratively finding your own way. #WorldGeoChat#K12ArtChat

Lately, just for fun I try this - use my GPS to get someplace and then don’t use it to get back…it’s fun and scary at the same time #K12ArtChat#TechFearTherapy
Sometimes it is fun to get a little lost. Not using GPS has allowed me a better sense of direction....and I do not worry about always being right. With that said, I am ok asking for directions if need be..

Q3 - A lot of technology fear is driven by stories. What are some stories or examples you’ve heard around technology/social media that stoke that fear? #K12ArtChat
There are times when I'm in the checkout line at store or at the gym & I am the only one without a phone out. I quickly worry that I am doing something wrong. Sanity regains control & I am pleased to have a peaceful moment (even if I'm gulping for air in the gym. #K12ArtChat
If you REALLY want to scare yourself - read this short story form EM Forster in 1909 call “The Machine Stops” (reminds me of Wall-E) https://t.co/aPJllYvP8I#K12ArtChat
I hear you... here's the thing: Aren't we prone to distraction at that moment? Isn't that why the magazines and candy are there? I think smartphones facilitate human behavior in certain environments. #K12ArtChat

Ok Q4 - One future (and present) technology that some fear is the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality. How have you seen AR/VR tech used effectively for learning? What tools or ideas can you share? #K12ArtChat
We sure are more receptive to distraction while in line. I am always day dreaming about those MnM Peanut candies. Please crack open the term, "facilitate human behavior." I would like to know more. #K12ArtChat#PLN
#K12ArtChat a4) we’ve been doing a lot of 3D modeling this year and instead of printing we’ve been using our merge cubes and the morphi app for a VR/AR view. Pretty outstanding results so far
I LOVE AR and a few years ago I used it a LOT in my classroom. The problem then was the Aurasma App had many issues AND I could not get others to download the app to see our creations around the school. SO many possibilities with AR & VR #K12ArtChat
A4: One of my lessons I wrote, abt furniture design & my latest lesson abt car design. Both using @MorphiApp has an amazing AR feature. Kids get so much from it. #K12ArtChat
A4 - Played around with https://t.co/41lrHCvfMo the other day too - Download the grid and have students create their own Virtual reality world. #k12artchat
A clumsy phrase on my part... I meant that tech doesn't cause positive or negative behavior in itself, but I know that's a duh. It can find our weak spots, such as waiting in line... which supermarkets have always known. #K12ArtChat
Thanks to all for joining us on a cold and blustery December day (at least here in Texas) for the #K12ArtChat and a special shout out to @GrundlerArt@Artguy76#TeamGrundler for the invite!
Let's continue the conversation from last wk, as host @trevorabryan Challenged you to look a work of art & asked "What does this remind you of: other artwork, experience or current event?" Share using #SlowK12ArtChat#K12ArtChat
Q5- FINAL QUESTION - As the holiday season is here, what’s one tech gadget/app you would gift yourself (or someone else) if money were no object? #K12ArtChat
Is there a FEAR when it comes to using Tech? Let's talk w/ host of #K12ArtChat tomorrow & Tech Guru @mrhooker as he helps us gain some ways to ease the fear.@NAEA@TXarted#tlap
A5 - I’ve been digging on https://t.co/xh6qtlHSpo - Art and electronics mixed together…might need to buy one for one of my little ones this year…#K12ArtChat
One last shameless plug for my friends at #K12ArtChat - we are accepting proposals now for #LearnFestATX - Come join us in Austin next summer…love to have some more arts at our event! https://t.co/RWWw0HfELH
