#122edchat is a weekly conversation designed to help inspire educators across the globe to reach their greatest potential in service of others. Megan Hacholski (@megan_hacholski) and Michael Abramczyk (@_on11), along with guest moderators, lead each week with a different focus tied to their strengths and areas of expertise.
Hi #122edchat! So glad to see everyone and so glad to see Ss being the leaders they inherently are. I’m Margret, and I teach middle grades literature in Louisiana. #rowvastrong

#122edchat
A1: I would like that I know that I am respected and that I will never be disrespected for my opinions or beliefs. I would also like that I can choose my own seat and that I get to collaborate with my peers. #122edchat
A1: I would like that my teacher takes the time to get to know me, and works to provide me choice to showcase my knowledge. An added bonus is that he tells really awesome dad jokes. #122edchat
A1: I would like the laid-back attitude and flexibility in learning. I would probably dislike the fact that the teacher likes to leave things open-ended instead of giving final answers - sorry kids, that's inquiry for you! #122edchat
A1: I would like all the freedom to choose what I can do for projects. I would not be a fan of the SAT prep. I would have liked that it is helping me on the test, but isn't very engaging. #122edchat
A1: Freedom to explore. Ability to build and design. Hands-on learning at it's best. Dislike? What's not to love about a self-led, design-focused environment? #122edchat
A1: I think the best way for teachers and students is to set basic parameters together. Students understand what is necessary and then have at it. I think support from admin to have those conversations. #122edchat
A1 I’d like Mrs. H's high expectations, infinite patience for the ‘weird and wonderful’ that is a middle schooler, deep Qs asked,m interesting topics discussed, & Mrs. H's killer songs to help us remember things. And her #RandomDancing is sick! And I HATE being bored. #122edchat
A1: I would NOT like the self-directed learning if I were still in 7th grade. (I liked the teachers telling me what to do - I knew how to play the game of school.) I would have a difficult time with it. I WOULD love the time we have to read independently! #122edchat
A1: I’d not like some of the physical features, like the fluorescent lighting & sterile environment (boo!). That’s why I’ve “cozy-ed” it up a bit with rugs, floor lamps, pictures, etc. It should feel like a room at home! #122edchat
Hey #122edchat I'm at parent teacher conferences tonight but it's been pretty slow, so I'm going to try and join in! Teri here, grades 6-8 STEM in South Dakota
A1: In the classes I taught I wouldn't have liked the set curriculum with only bonus opportunities for student driven components. This changed more and more as I gained experience.
#122edchat
A1-If I were a student in my class I would like the different Literature and discussions we have. I would dislike the size of the classroom. sometimes the room can feel claustrophobic. #122edchat
A1: I would like that I use humor and try to be relatable with the assignments I provide. I would probably dislike how quickly I sometimes push my students through the content. I recently had my students reflect on this idea for a recent assignment I gave. #122edchat
A1: In the classes I taught I wouldn't have liked the set curriculum. I would appreciate the voiceand choice provide as well as the belief in me by the teacher.
#122edchat
A1. I would like that my teacher wanted to get to really know me. I would wish that we would be more physically active. I have never been good at sitting still. #122edchat
A1: If I were a student in my classroom I would LOVE that students get many choices each day and get to direct their own learning. I would dislike that we do typing practice each week. I feel it is important, but I always hated it when I was a student! #122edchat
A1 I would love the tone. Open and goofy, but serious about content and relationships. I might not love the tangents if they did not pertain to my particular interest #122edchat
A1: I would like that there is usually freedom on where to sit, whether to work alone or with a partner, and choice in platform to show learning. I would dislike the uncomfortable chairs and rows of computers. #122edchat
A1 #122edchat I do a lot of things I enjoyed as a student: seminar discussions, flexible grouping, independent projects, etc. I like being creative. I think my biggest weakness is being able to give timely feedback, so I as a student I might not like that.
A1 I think student-me would have liked all the writing in teacher-me’s class. I wouldn’t have liked all the discussion formats that wouldn’t have allowed me to avoid participating, but that was what I needed. #122edchat
A1) I do a lot of collaboration, I use blended model in my classroom and I think I’d like going at my pace and my focused needs being met.
I don’t know if I’d like the little feedback I give. I try to give feedback quick but a lot of times I give it too late #122edchat
If I were a little in my classroom, K-3 I would like writing on the tables and small white boards & using technology to make my voice heard. I would dislike writing on paper and just listening. #122edchat
A1 I'd love the games and game-based learning we do, especially creative use of #MinecraftEdu but I don't know if I'd love all the student-directed stuff. I liked hearing history stories from my teachers. Then again, I'm a history nerd unlike some of my students #122edchat
Randomly dance behind a cranky student...it's sure to cheer him/her up or at least let them know how infinitely cool you are (though they will totally disagree)! #122edchat
I had trouble being comfortable for 85 minutes until @tsuejohnson introduced flexible seating. I can choose to sit in a bean bag or on a stool. It truly keeps me engaged when being comfortable in my seat #122edchat
A1: I would appreciate the freedom and ability to develop my autonomy. I would hate the mistakes I would make as I was learning how to be more autonomous. #122edchat#rowvastrong
I love the discussions with students, too. I don't think I EVER talked about my home reading with a teacher. EVER. I'd love it if my teacher was a reader like I am.
#122edchat
Then how would you, if you were the teacher in this scenario, keep everyone on track? Would there be loose guidelines for what you want to learn? Or would it be entirely student choice? #122edchat
A1:I would like that I had time to talk and joke around for a few minutes. I would like that my teacher talks to me and that I can redo any assignment. I would have a hard time with the tests because they are hard and expect students to apply their learning. #122edchat
A1: I would love to the ability to share my voice (my insights, opinions, thoughts) as often as possible. Also, I would love to have a teacher that would make me feel like I am the most important person in the room while making my classmates feel the same. #122edchat
A1. I would definitely love the creativity throughout various lessons and the classroom community that we’ve built. I would dislike the collaboration aspect seeing as I am shy amongst new peers. #122edchat#troll209
A1 - I would love the positive energy, music, pictures, freedom and general loving environment. Probably wouldn’t like the super high expectations all the time and life lessons. #122edchat
#122edchat A1 I would like that we have been able to go beyond the classroom walls to learn. We have taken Ss this year to Russia, Canada, Israel, France, Sweden and Denmark. Great way to teach geography skills and share/learn culture.
A1 Tough Question.... HS Student me would like the different activities and opps to change gears but I would also be sleeping if Ts lectured for 105 mins (which I hear some do) #122edchat
Yes! I enjoy the classes that can express their creativity through their seating a lot more than those with the traditional desks lined up in rows. #122edchat
A1: If I were a student at my school I would love my teachers, the @SmartLab_tweets and the positive environment. I would dislike the shrinking green space due to construction, but it’s temporary. #122edchat
A2: We can talk as a class about why it is important to be able to openly express yourself and how to show each other respect when we disagree. #122edchat
A1: I would like that we try out a variety of activities and are never stagnant in class, but I would hate how some students try to hold us back by resisting change. #122edchat
A teacher at my school recently got rid of a lot of her desks and replaced them with deck chairs, couches, and other alternative seating ideas. Students are RAVING about it! #122edchat@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator
In reply to
@mrstbauerly, @ERobbPrincipal, @KGT_Educator
I completely agree! Making a classroom feel more like home can have so many benefits! I have a few teachers that started doing that this year and I really think it makes a difference! #122edchat
Most folks don't want to sit still either...yet look at our PD! We actually have PD on flexible seating and allowing for movement as we sit still in rows, lol! #122edchat
All of this! I have to remind myself that the same worry I feel sometimes as an adult about not knowing the right way is the same worry the Ss might feel as they are solving problems. But in both of us, it’s empowering. #122edchat#rowvastrong#BlankMiddle
A2: I'm very careful with how I respond to incorrect answers to ensure that all Ss feel that their voice is heard & valued. By 8th grade, unfortunately, some Ss are conditioned to be afraid to raise their hand. Hard to break that wall down. #122edchat
A2: I think the best way for teachers and students is to set basic parameters together. Students understand what is necessary and then have at it. I think support from admin to have those conversations. #122edchat
A2: Platforms like @Flipgrid are great resources for students to freely share viewpoints and thoughts without being judged or feeling self-conscious. Would also love to find a way to incorporate blogging. Writing is such a cathartic process. Painful, but good. #122edchat
A2: One strategy I like to use it to have the students make up their own rules. I think it helps them feel safe to speak up. Here's where I struggle: when one person says something polarizing, how do I make both sides feel safe to speak? #122edchat
I think a lot of students enjoy projects and creative activities in the classroom, it engages them and gets them excited to show their talents. #122edchat
A2: I am upfront with my students at the beginning of the year. I let them know that they can feel free to express their opinion without ridicule or derision. We might not agree, but we will honor the fact that we have opinions supported by facts. #122edchat
A1: Not in my own classroom yet but I hope that my students would like the flexibility and freedom to make mistakes in the classroom. You do not have to be perfect with math;) They probably would dislike how often I ask, why did you do this? #122edchat
A2: I feel like we can do this every day. It takes a lot of time and trust-building between teachers and students. We need to LISTEN to students and SHOW them we're listening to their ideas and questions. This helps. #122edchat
A2: Listen to students. Set expectations & follow through (no judgement, namecalling, gossip, etc). Ask students questions and listen to responses. My fear holds me back I think bc I don't have good enough routines/procedures #122edchat
A teacher at my school recently got rid of a lot of her desks and replaced them with deck chairs, couches, and other alternative seating ideas. Students are RAVING about it! #122edchat@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator
In reply to
@mrstbauerly, @ERobbPrincipal, @KGT_Educator
A1: I would like the diversity of literature that challenges my own perspective, but the lazy student in me would not like the high expectations! #122edchat
I definitely feel more organized when I am given a deadline and a specific task. It’s nice to have options and creativity once in a while though :) #122edchat
#122edchat A1 We have also done cultural conversations. Today we had a conversation with a class in Buenos Aires, Argentina about gender inequality and earlier this year our HS CE discussed current issues with a class in Monterrey, Mexico.
A2: I always provided both in-person and virtual ways for students to interact with the class and myself. Being an introvert myself, I know this can make a huge difference.
#122edchat
A2- I work to create a no judgement zone. I try to make students feel as comfortable as possible sharing their ideas. I would say the only thing holding students back is their own insecurities. The age I teach they are very worried what others think. #122edchat
A1. I would like that I could use voice and choice, sit anywhere I'd like. Like working in smal groups or 1:1. Dislike we can't make slime all the time!! This came from one of my Ss! #122edchat
I get to move classrooms next year and we are going 1:1 so we can dump the rows of desktop computers and stationary solitary work stations... CAN NOT WAIT. #122edchat
In reply to
@MrPStrunk, @ERobbPrincipal, @KGT_Educator
And I try to add things specifically on the walls that the students might enjoy staring at as they daydream. My friends and I talk about how we used to stare at blank walls and wished there was a map or something. #EngageTheMind#122edchat#rowvastrong
Maybe you could make up a fun story for typing practice or you could go around the room typing a one sentence story to help the students have more fun. #122edchat
A2: You provide opportunities for students to share. You establish that your classroom is a safe place (personal attacks are dealt with quickly). Also, you as a teacher need to TALK LESS THAN THE STUDENTS. Establish that their voice is the most important in the room #122edchat
Humor is the best brain break! I work the best when I can really focus in on a certain chapter of the book that interests me. Presenting with my classmates can always be a fun and educational activity to encourage this! #122edchat
How do you deal with the unruly children that take advantage of that system? I've heard the "It's just my opinion!" excuse many a time, and it's just as annoying for students as it is for teachers. #122edchat
I have expressed with my older Ss that I had trouble reading as a kiddo and how much I have learned about reading from becoming a teacher, continually learning and teaching my Ss how to read. #122edchat
A1: In my class, I would love the Disney theme (Big Hero 6), the flexible seating, the fact the T and her parents (this T is 42 BTW so do the math) took the time to paint the restroom with bright colors, #choosekind motif.... #122edchat
A1P2: I would dislike the disruptions from how many students have been moved from one teachers' class to another multiple times this year. Too many worksheets recently too. #122edchat
#122edchat I would like the opportunity to share my thoughts and opinions during discussions/debates, in addition to the freedom to feel like I can share without fear
A2 - Mantra for class. Make the class your class. We always talk about having an open and honest community. It shapes trust, respect and kindness. #122edchat
A2. Being open with my students. Sharing my own experiences and feelings may help students feel more comfortable to share with me (and others). #122edchat#troll209
A1: I would like that I use humor and try to be relatable with the assignments I provide. I would probably dislike how quickly I sometimes push my students through the content. I recently had my students reflect on this idea for a recent assignment I gave. #122edchat
I had one lawn chair. It broke w/in a week. :( I now have two square tables instead of four long tables, and that helps, but it's tight w/4 kids at one. The kids are big and their books pile high. Some day I'll have perfect furniture. Then I'll retire. ;D #122edchat
The first part of my class is a time of direct instruction. If I can figure out how to use flex seating for this I would like to try it. I like the whole group conversation during direct instruction and I do not want to lose that. #122edchat
A2 students feel they can speak their mind openly when you actually allow them to speak their mind and not be reprimanded or hurry them through content! Crazy how that works huh? #122edchat
A2: I think by establishing norms. Talk about how we will handle opinions that differ from our own respectfully and learn from one another. It takes trust and mutual respect which come after a relationship is established. #122edchat
As a student, I also dislike the teacher pushing a subject just to get the material in on time. Being able to talk about certain subjects can be very helpful and eye-opening to some students. #122edchat
I agree with you. We have to model the problem-solving we want for students. We should approach our teaching in the same way, too. Process, not product. #122edchat
In English, we had a discussion using a ball. Only students who held the ball could speak. It was a great way for everyone's opinion to be heard. #122edchat
A2 #122edchat We set ground rules early on, & I set expectations for active listening during to foster a strong learning community. I like encouraging students to make personal connections, to take ownership of their learning, and to support each other through the process.
My goal for flexible seating next year is tables on wheels. Tall and short tables, for sitting or standing. I think this would allow for whole group collab as well as small group and independent work. #122edchat
Awwwww....thanks Lauren for spending some time with #122edchat! We are here every Wednesday at 7. We'll save you a seat! Also, check out @MrPStrunk and #waledchat on Thursdays at 9 EDT.
I think a lot of students enjoy working with others and getting to sit in different places in the classroom. It makes them more comfortable and encourages creativity #122edchat
A2: I do not express my personal opinions on anything but the best pizza and the neighborhood and the superiority of Star Wars over other movies. By staying out of the political discussions, I hope to allow students of all backgrounds to voice their opinions! #122edchat
A2) I constantly ask for feedback from my students. Then use that to move class from there. I feel like my students feel empowered to make changes in my class #122edchat
A2: Creating a space of trust & respect. Maybe “speaking” their minds isn’t speaking at all?! Maybe it’s body lang, eye contact, writing, a kind gesture. If we invite Ss to “speak” their minds, are we prepared to affirm their effort in a trusting & respectful way? #122edchat
A2 - You build community by modeling those actions and words that stress a non-judgmental classroom. Also starting the year off with very clear guidelines. #122edchat
A2 One of my greatest values as a teacher is creating a space where students can think, talk, and write about what genuinely matters to them. It’s hard but so worthwhile! #122edchat
This is something I need to do more often! Feel like I do it informally, but would love to do a class survey at the end of the year or something like it. #122edchat
I ring a zen bell and have kids come up to the rug (just like in elem school) for mini-lessons and they really like it, believe it or not. Sit on floor, benches, etc. #122edchat
A3: They would teach me the apps that they enjoy using and how to use them for class. They would also want to teach me how to play Fortnight or Shell Shockers because they have been asking me to play daily even though they know I would die straight off the bat. ;) #122edchat
Totally fair! That’s when it falls on us to differentiate the activity such as not showing your face or not sharing your voice until ready. Plenty of apps you can app smash with or even just have a student share with a whiteboard! #122edchat
Thanks! So far I've had one conference but I got to meet two of my future students who were doing tours of the middle school tonight! They are so excited to be in middle school next year :) #122edchat
I definitely agree with this. It’s easiest to learn and focus more when you are comfortable! I know I personally have an issue with it if I am sitting in one of the more uncomfortable desks. #122edchat
Those are all I use basically. I sometimes have kids write on paper because I need a physical sample. We go through a lot of dry erase markers through the year. #122edchat
A2 We generate class rules together, but the rules are based on respect for everyone (S's & T's). I used Flipgrid a lot to ensure all voices, it's helped my quiet kids a lot. They even Participate more in front of everyone now 👏😀 #122edchat
I love when we get to choose if we can work in groups or work alone. As more of an introvert, I usually feel like I can get more done on my own. #122edchat
A3: I hope they would teach each other how to use their voices to move MOUNTAINS! They have more power than any generation before them. We just need to feel confident to hand over some of the control to let them practice #studentvoice with us. #122edchat
A3: There are more options than PPTs and essays. Be OK with noise and mistakes. Not everything is going to be perfect the first time, or even the 50th time. Have patience, relax, have fun and enjoy the ride, Mr. A. #122edchat
A3: I would love to hear their insights on how they learn best. In the end, we can’t force ideas down their throat. We have to be able to reach them at their level. #122edchat
Ss must understand that #StarWars is the greatest movie series of all times. Establishing this truth really should be a part of our curriculum. #122edchat
Correcting incorrect answers in the right way is awesome. Students can get embarrassed if we answer a question wrong. We like being reassured #122edchat
#122edchat
A2: Establishing ground rules and an understanding that we might not agree but we need to respect each other and each other's opinions. Building positive relationships goes a long way
A3: What a fun question! I have a feeling we’d be dancing, performing lines from a play, creating a piece of artwork, or singing Camila Cabello songs! (Let’s be real. We do that already, we’d just do a lot more of it!) #122edchat
A2: Let them speak their mind w/o fear of retaliation. I also tell my Ss when evaluating a text, their answer is never wrong if they can explain it using textual evidence. Your words are powerful when used in the appropriate way. #122edchat
A2: I feel like we can do this every day. It takes a lot of time and trust-building between teachers and students. We need to LISTEN to students and SHOW them we're listening to their ideas and questions. This helps. #122edchat
A2 I often times tell Ss, don't worry about raising hands, lets just have a conversation. I want to have them flow and vibe off each other. Raising hands stops that. #122edchat
A3: I'm not sure and, honestly, that is what excites me about the idea. My firm belief in those around me ensures trust in their greatness and an openness to learn from all.
#122edchat
A2 Make room/time/trust for participation. The topic must be interesting tho, right? I wonder, they wonder, we research what we wonder, etc. I encourage Q'ing, thinking, & discussing on deeper, higher level. My job is to connet what we 'have to know' to 'want to know'. #122edchat
A3-I think my students could teach me A LOT. Specifically in the Tech department. I try, but struggle with tech. I think my students would have a ton to teach me about their different cultures as well. I think that I would learn, so much from them.#122edchat
Q1: I don’t have my own classroom quite yet but I would LOVE being a student in @MrMac_Walker’s class. I know every one of those kiddos feels included, loved, and valued! I’ve never seen a teacher implement the student’s thoughts and opinions more than Mr. Mac! #122edchat
A2: focusing on relationships with students. Provide a variety of tools/methods/avenues for communication and expression. One barrier now is time. 30 min classes leave little time for building relationships. Luckily I teach all k-8 ss so I can get to know them better. #122edchat
I am an introvert so if it is possible to do it alone I would prefer to do that. Sometimes group work is a necessary evil, so I try to compromise by letting kids go solo all other times if wanted. Some are really social though & truly talk about their learning #122edchat
Isnt it also our job to lead those discussions? In my opinion showing students and adults that we can discuss potentially uncomfortable topics without resorting to yelling and name calling or picking sides is one of the important things we can do #122edchat
A2: I do not express my personal opinions on anything but the best pizza and the neighborhood and the superiority of Star Wars over other movies. By staying out of the political discussions, I hope to allow students of all backgrounds to voice their opinions! #122edchat
A3 I'd like to hear their ideas and their passions. They know what I love but I'd love them what really motivates them and gets them out of bed in the morning. #122edchat
A3 - They would probably teach me about showing power points and guided notes. I rarely do them because I’d rather interact with the class. Also probably some kind of sarcasm about positivity. #122edchat
A3: Kids are awesome because they teach us something every day! But I would love to learn more about how they connect and communicate through technology #122edchat
A3 #122edchat My Ss teach me everyday! I love giving them the reins. Mostly they would teach me that I can trust them with their learning, that they are capable of dealing with challenging topics & difficult discussion without my help, and that they have good taste in music!
A3: Technology!!!! I am always trying to learn more and use more apps, but they know the struggle is real! 😂 I depend so much on them to figure it out when I push out a new app! They love that they can teach me! #122edchat
A2: I try to show them how I make mistakes, and that if I am willing to mess up or even act a fool in front of them, they should be comfortable too. The need to look "cool" (or whatever the term of the day is) I think still holds so many back. #122edchat
A3: Hopefully they could teach me how to master that "floss" dance move and improve my gameplay in Fortnite. I would hope they could teach me about some of the cool new apps they are using and see HOW they are using them too. #122edchat
I love stools. I have 4 science stools (I found in the stairwell), one Hokki stool (that was donated), and one bar stool (that I found at Goodwill). I, however, like my mama's rocking chair the best. Some students do, too. ;D #122edchat
In reply to
@SuptSornberger, @Hell2Teach, @RealMrsBentley
A3: I guarantee that the first thing that they would teach me are some real dance moves. I go out of the way to butcher the whip, Nae and floss. That way they can make fun of me for that and not the fact that I can't real dance. I would love to be taught Spanish. #122edchat
The perks of being in English 101/102 is that we have amazing discussions of every story and piece of writing that we read. This definitely keeps students more upbeat about the topics and allows fun when learning. #122edchat
A3- this question makes me excited! They can teach a lot and I bet it would involve technology, creativity, problem solving, and collaboration #122edchat
These past few weeks have affirmed my belief that I need to learn as much about myself and the world as I expect them to learn about themselves and the world. And we are cultivating that knowledge together. #122edchat#rowvastrong
A3: Wow great question.
I would love to see life from their perspective-hopes, dreams, fears, and opinions. I’d also learn more about how they connect with their peers. #122edchat
I actually love pretending that I don't know what certain slang words mean or that I don't get their pop culture references- also don't want to seem TOO cool! They kind of like when I seem like an old lady #122edchat
It's so great! My kids sit in dirty/dusty/dark corners, lay on the floor, etc. I also have a class set of clipboards so they can work anywhere too. The rule is they can work where they want as long as they work. #122edchat
In reply to
@mrstbauerly, @MrPStrunk, @ERobbPrincipal, @KGT_Educator
A3: I want them to teach me the thing that is of the highest importance to them. I do this every year. We call it "The Final Word Project" - they share/teach something to the class and connect it to a text we read. It's the best (and final) assignment of the year. #122edchat
A3 Iwish I had a better answer here but they would literally just try and coach me through games of Fortnight. If it wasn’t videogame related they would spend the entire week doing obscure science experiments and I would love it! #122edchat
A3: Probably some of their dance moves, how to play fortnite, how to not suck at playing Minecraft (already play, die a LOT), how to crochet, bake, and do some sort of ranching work #122edchat
A2 We use Responsive Classroom and spend the first few weeks developing community. We have Morning Meeting every day. We also discuss/reflect on what we did well and what we need to work on. #122edchat
A2: I own my mistakes & apologize to my students when I have been wrong. I want them to know they can "call me out" and help me learn also. However working to make sure we are appropriate with our comments. #122edchat
We started using Flipgrid this year and at first I did not like the idea at all and it took some time to get used to. I love that you provide both options! #122edchat
I'd say to a degree yes, but also know that I'm in an influential position where I do not want students to follow my position just because I am the teacher. I would rather ask them about what they believe and why and guide them to similar and dissimilar beliefs #122edchat
I definitely agree! The awesome part of our school is having genius hour where students can create their own student-led projects. Our generation has so much power to our voices that we don’t even realize. #122edchat
I agree. Unfortunately, I think students could be overlooked and aren't given an opportunity to show their talents. It is important that they all are given an opportunity #122edchat
Completely agree, Joy! We need to slow ourselves down, and remember that we might be the only adults in their lives that are doing that. It means the world to them. #122edchat
A4: Remain focused on the learners in front of me & keep their best interest AND interests (!) at the forefront of all I do. Put myself in their shoes as much as possible. #122edchat
A4: One thing I feel like allows us to learn together is when I sit among the students. I try to sit with them instead of stand in front of them as much as I can. #122edchat
A4: We are pretty much locked in with out Lab. Demonstration of understanding and venues for reflection are negotiable. We are looking at other options than what we have in place currently. #122edchat
A3 My students could teach me about their experiences. What teaching practices work best for them? What helps them take creative risks? What do they want to learn about the world? Each other? Themselves? #122edchat
And I have found that it helps my students learn more what THEY believe. I play devils advocate and talk from several different perspectives. Just because I do not share my personal ones does not mean I do not share perspectives. #122edchat
A4: maybe have some stations set up that students could work on at the start of class, or for learning break.. like 'learn how to make pixel art' or 'make a markerbot' Ss could be responsible for creating the stations/topics #122edchat
I definitely am more excited for classes that I have a positive relationship with the teacher. It is a very positive thing to connect with your students #122edchat
A3 They notice EVERYTHING we do, both the good and the not so good. Kids want to emulate adults in their life that matter to them, so always to be a positive example for them! #122edchat
A4: My first reaction? “Nobody puts baby in a corner!” (HA!) Be sure no one is in a corner or back row for too long. Rotate & find what works best for each Ss learning! Movin’ & groovin’! #122edchat
A3 They would want to teach their fav video games like Roblox and they would want to teach me the game they like to play at recess Fenceball! They've gamified fenceball with xp etc. #122edchat
@tsuejohnson has students teach a grammar lesson as part of the learning process, so maybe consider adding a lesson if you want the students to express those qualities. #122edchat
A4) tailor and meet the needs of the students. Rows and rows don’t work anymore. We need spaces for collaboration and spaces students work in partners teaching each other. Ask students what their ideal classroom setup is #122edchat
A3: They would teach me how to be a better teacher. I would be able to learn more about how to engage them on a whole new level along with teaching me about the apps and games they are playing/using. #122edchat
Learning is more fun (especially after being through 12 years of school 😉) with a variety of choices. I love that ROWVA offers this in many different classes. It gets boring after doing the same stuff every day. #122edchat
I’m one of those students that is sometimes uncomfortable raising my hand. I find it a lot easier to talk in class when I get more positive feedback on homework or tests, so maybe try to encourage them by writing some good notes on their work. #122edchat
When I started looking through the catalog I pulled up a group of Ss and said 'what about this' and they shared what they thought & how it would work. #122edchat

But it's also important for us to see that not everyone has a perfect attitude all of the time, so don't feel afraid to express your feelings! #122edchat
100% agree. That’s pretty much my point that we need to play devils advocate and open these topics not with our opinions but rather to hear students opinions and feelings on these matters #122edchat
A3. Mine would want to teach how to make slime and volcanoes from one of my fourth graders. My fifth grader would do the chromotography with rose petals and leaves! It would vary per child! #122edchat
A3: Also, I want them to teach me to become a better teacher. Asking them questions about what I can do (and stop doing) to improve the classroom experience. Their input is what brings new life and new ideas. AND...for them to teach me how to play Fortnite. #122edchat
In my classroom, the students have their OWN learning styles! Some friends like to work ind., some like to work in partners, and others prefer a group. It doesn’t matter how, as long as YOU are LEARNING! #KidsDeserveIt#JoyfulLeaders#TLAP#LeadLAP#BeTheOne#122edchat
We do this cool thing called #ROWVAchill where students can sign up for sessions to learn different things they would not normally learn in class. I think your idea of having stations; it seems similar to what we have. I love it #122edchat
We teach accountable talk/scholarly discussion...I have frames on each table with sentence stems to help them respond. I can share with you later if you remind me. #122edchat
Nate, how would you feel about ONLY getting feedback - and no score? I'm in my 3rd year trying this. Some students love it, some... would rather just have a number or letter. #122edchat
My favorite classrooms tend to be history classrooms because 1) I like history, and 2) there is room for discussion. My favorite classes are debate classes. I love discussion over important concepts and letting the students find the information out for themselves. #122edchat
A4: I want to get rid of desks and use tables, beanbag chairs etc. The problem is that I let a new teacher have my room for next year...I will be on a cart. #122edchat.
A3: at the moment they would try to teach me some "floss" dance which to me looks more like someone wiping their hind end after showering LOL! But seriously, I want them to teach me how to differentiate to all of their needs. Tired of leaving some in the dark! #122edchat
I really agree with this. As a student, I know I feel more comfortable when you do this and I know my classmates feel the same way as we seem to be on the same level. #122edchat
I like when I walk into a classroom and I can quickly figure out what subject the teacher teaches. I would love comfy chairs and bigger desk area. I enjoy quotes on the walls. #122edchat
You could youtube how to do those things to be one step ahead of your students. Although, it can be a little difficult to find the right video. Always worth a shot! #122edchat
#122edchat I like to get in the sandbox with them. I get excited when they are excited. I have learned to read the room and how to meet our needs as a class. I like having "conferences," and I have my room set up so students are grouped with people they can talk to face to face.
I had a professor who did this and it definitely changed the atmosphere of the classroom. We were all much more comfortable and willing to share our ideas. Wish more teachers did this! #troll209#122edchat
A4 I’d love to have a classroom with a circle of comfortable chairs for discussions and lots of choices for where to work independently. And a snack station. And plants. I can dream! #122edchat
@tsuejohnson has some stools and old shelving units that students can stand or sit at. I used these most of the year and it was a great change in the classroom! #122edchat
Very true, I teach MS, so there are times when you have to be real with them to get your point across. As long as you stay respectful about it!
#122edchat
I agree, I think students are more engaged with different seating arrangements rather than the normal rows. It could be a positive thing to change things up to engage everyone. #122edchat
A5: I am really interested in hearing what the students have to say about this question. I suppose that I try to make sure all of my students are comfortable and that they understand that I am not going to judge them based on their answers to questions. #122edchat
A2: Ts must be willing to express some vulnerability, opening up to Ss (Model the behavior). Create multiple platforms for communication (physical/digital/etc). Show Ss the impact of their voice (self-directed learning/activism/etc). #122edchat
We have several classrooms with bean bags and as a student, it is so much more comfortable to sit in one while reading or doing anything than it is to sit in one of the traditional desks! #122edchat
A3 The kids would probably teach me how to use a chromebook better (I have a Mac), and probably how to play Fortnight. Maybe they’d teach me how to dance better? #122edchat
My students are allowed to speak their mind as long as it is done so with respect. Being a music room, there are many conversations that are brought forth by the music we are making. We are there to make music & support each other 🎶💕 #122edchat
Q2: My 4th grade friends would probably try and teach me how to do the “floss” dance for the 50th time or try and improve my Smart Board skills! #122edchat
A5: In these situations, I enjoy coming alongside of reluctant learners. Begin a conversation. Find out what makes them tick. Use that as a lever to work engagement. #122edchat
A5: I have a couple Ss that immediately come to mind. I try to make personal connections with them during those activities to see if there is an underlying problem I can help solve. #122edchat
Being able to listen to your students is very important, because you will be able to see what is going on with your students. You could make a survey to find out more about them. #122edchat
Yes! I feel like I traveled back to the '50s everytime I step into the "traditional" classroom. A suggestion is to have a day where students sit on the floor or switch seats! #122edchat
A5: Yes! This student loves listening to music, so I try to engage in that. Greet them with a smile & high five every day. Each day is a new day, even if they don't like my class I hope that every day will be the one where they find that spark #122edchat
One time I put arbitrary points on an assignment to see kids reaction. Some kids got 1000 points, others 50...When they questioned it we talked about the why of the assignment vs. the grade. #122edchat
In reply to
@JoyKirr, @npeters1322, @megan_hacholski
A4: I'm kind of stuck with classroom setup because I am in a computer lab and can't move furniture- but I think adding more wall space for student work and allowing students to have more input would be a good idea! #122edchat
Q2: My 4th grade friends would probably try and teach me how to do the “floss” dance for the 50th time or try and improve my Smart Board skills! #122edchat
At the start of each trimester I do a get to know you digital doc of some kind. This trimester it was "your Top5 Top 5s" where students picked 5 topics and told me there top 5 list for each :) so fun #122edchat
A4 I'd make the period longer (we have 50 minutes) so we could follow a lesson, its discussion, & activities/follow up to a natural conclusion instead of breaking it up into unfinished sections due to the bell ringing, rushing us on to something and somewhere else. #122edchat
A5 Unfortunately I have many Ss this year that fit that description. My team has tried a lot of things side-by-side chats, one on one help afterschool, p conferences. We just keep trying but some kids are just tougher to reach when they come to use with baggage. #122edchat
A5: Sometimes just sit and chat with them - about anything OTHER than school!! TWO minutes a day. Daily. I heard it can be somewhat like banking - We need to make deposits before we make withdrawals. #122edchat
A5- I try to touch base with them daily in class. I work to make eye contact with them while I'm teaching. I like to try to find out what they enjoy and learn a little about it, so we can talk about it. #122edchat
A5: One-on-one conversations, affirmations, & challenges to “rise to the occasion”, acknowledging that it’s hard/scary/etc. If a student feels loved, supported, & like they belong, at some point there will be a spark! #122edchat
A5: I had a student in my 3D design class that professed only being in there because it fit their schedule. Getting to know them and customizing projects to their interests helped them truly enjoy the class.
#122edchat
A5: I think I would be fooling myself if I said no. I am hoping that providing feedback opportunities will help me find ways to help students open up and spread their wings in class. #122edchat
As a shy student, I can't always say what is wrong with me that day. I think this is great! Ss need someone to come to them specifically sometimes. #122edchat
Allowing the Ss to make the classroom feel like THEIR space rather than mine has done wonders - I love letting them hang signs, leave notes...my room is covered in random decorations! But I love it, because it represents my students &the community we created together. #122edchat
A5 20 years in, I know that when a student is disengaged, there's something going on - with friends, a topic/skill they struggle with, something at home, they are legit bored, maybe a learning disability. My job is to build rapport, connect, and help out any way I can. #122edchat
We talk in psychology about how every person has their own way of learning and sometimes it takes a while to find out what that is. Finding out what makes them tick is exactly what will help every student personally. #122edchat
A5 I always have a few who avoid the task, or the challenge, or the decision-making and risk-taking behaviors associated with genuine learning. Helping students connect their learning to their own values makes a big difference. #122edchat
I'm a quiet kid (in the beginning) and often didn't talk when I was younger. I was often persuaded to come out of my shell if the teacher interested/was nice to me. I'm not too different from everyone else, so that seems like a great idea. #122edchat
A5: I've struggled with this more this year than any other. I've worked to get Ss engaged with projects that can pull in their interests. We are beginning Genius Hour to help with engagement too!#122edchat
It's important to create an environment for the students where they feel comfortable and not judged for expressing their opinions. An environment like this would encourage kids to be more open and expressive. #122edchat
A4: I really want to learn to use my SMARTboard A LOT more! I feel like it is an underutilized piece of furniture right now that is just a glorified projector. I need to learn how to make interactive games to get my Ss moving more! #122edchat
A5 I know that I don't engage everyone with my classroom activities. I need to give more chances for feedback so I can adjust activities that appeal to more. #122edchat
A5 YES! I have him in my mind right now. I always make sure to greet this student and compliment his AMAZING artwork. I want him to know that he is a part of our group, and that his voice matters. I also respect that he need to join us on his own terms, not mine. #122edchat
A4. I like to create lessons that allow for students to get up and learn rather than being in their desks all day. I’m looking forward to having flexible seating in my classroom one day! #122edchat#troll209
A5: I had a student in my 3D design class that professed only being in there because it fit their schedule. Getting to know them and customizing projects to their interests helped them truly enjoy the class.
#122edchat
A4 I don't know what I could add to our setting, I use every square inch of the place, even the hallway when I need more places. kids are everywhere, floors, desks, my office, and extra tables 😀 I like to transform the room for special things: set up a campsite, etc. #122edchat
I was that same shy student, so I totally understand. It's always good to have that adult you can connect with - I never had that in school, so I love to be that person for my Ss. #122edchat
Thanks, Nate! I've read research that says if we ONLY get feedback, we learn more than if we get feedback and a grade attached. Crazy, but I think it's true now that I've tried it for a bit. #122edchat
I think some students can be more worried about other students judging them than the teacher. Group work might be a way to help with that. Make sure that the groups are changed up every once in a while though. #122edchat
I agree with Bryce; being shy is something I have struggled with, too. I know some of my teachers make personal connections with me and that makes me so much more comfortable to open up to them when they put in the effort too. #122edchat
It makes me happy that some teachers take time to engage in a students life. Even a smile in the hallway does wonders. You never know what is going on in their life, but if you take the time to create an interest, they will be forever thankful! #122edchat
A5: Let's have lunch! I always love opening up my room to anyone that wants a quieter space to unwind and start a dialogue about what's going on. #122edchat
A4 I try and allow students to move and find space that allows discussion, math is best when students struggle and help each other. Students speaking to each other in their own language is important. Breaking from rows allows this to happen #122edchat
I agree, if you can find a connection between the material and their everyday lives or interests, it could engage them and make them more positive about the learning process. #122edchat
A4: Flexible seating and allowing students the freedom to sit/stand where they learn best. I know there i times u want to stand and dont want to sit. This cannot be a hindrance to learning.
#122edchat
A3: I have a “teach me” board in my room and it looks like I better learn Russian this month!! 😁it’s important to never stop learning, and to model that #122edchat
A5: Find opportunities to talk with them and get to know their learning styles. We still have kids that really struggle with group activities. We have to hear how they want to learn. Give them choice. #122edchat
#GeniusHour is awesome! I like to get engaged when I get to choose what I am learning. I also like to help the teacher come up with the rubric. #122edchat
Thank you so much! This is definitely how I feel. The sign over my door is "You Matter". I believe it wholeheartedly & try to make sure everyone believes it. #122edchat
This is an awesome attitude to have. Every day is always a new day to try new things or to learn something different. It helps if each day is taken on with a positive attitude :) #122edchat
Being able to admit your mistakes to students is good. The students would be able to relate, and believe that it is okay to admit their mistakes. #122edchat
And I use my smartboard less and less...it puts my in the front of the room too much...but my subjects don't lend well to using the smartboard either. #122edchat
A4: Start your year/semester with a blank room. Have students decorate throughout their time in your class. This minor decision will bolster student voice, agency, autonomy, and interest in a room they are required to be in for a large amount of time. #122edchat
My students write essays about their connections to their neighborhoods, stories in verse about their struggles, and illustrates essays about their intersecting identities. If they’re not writing about what matters to them, why are they writing at all? #122edchat
I remember when I had teachers who would NOT admit their mistakes. It annoyed me so much! We all make mistakes--and that's how we all learn. #122edchat
Do Ts use technology through online discussions to give shy kids a voice? Is there value to this as a student who might be reluctant to share in front of the class? #122edchat
This is awesome!! I think our students would love this and would open up to teachers more if we did something like this. It gives us endless opportunities. #122edchat
I have noticed especially with middle schoolers they sometimes have experienced someone holding a grudge & almost expect other Ts to do the same. I would never want my Ss to hold a grudge if I had a bad day, I won't do that to them either #122edchat
A4 I would add some more flexible seating. We have yoga balls, bucket seats and the rug. I would like to add a few beanbags. We just got 2 iPads from DonorsChoose so I will be working on adding opportunities to use a green screen #122edchat
Love it man! Love that you turned the scenario into something that will benefit the student in the future not just convince them why they should care about this particular class. Well done! #122edchat
Yes! In our building, we've had Ts use @Flipgrid and @TodaysMeet - I'm sure there are other tools that have been used as well! Helps take the pressure off. #122edchat

We usually do 2 or 3 people to a group and we as students get to choose those groups. However, close friends always try to stick together and that doesn't always allow for me to work with other student's learning abilities. #122edchat
A2: congratulate publicly and correct privately. Make expectations clear and be consistent. Follow through with ss requests and complaints. Mediate conversations where there is an imbalance of power. #122edchat
A4: Start your year/semester with a blank room. Have students decorate throughout their time in your class. This minor decision will bolster student voice, agency, autonomy, and interest in a room they are required to be in for a large amount of time. #122edchat
A5 I have one student who resists engaging in our activities, he needs a lot of attention sometimes he co-operates sometimes not. We continue to build our relationship I make sure to offer choices he prefers in our choice Board #122edchat
Our teachers play classical covers of popular music. Research shows that it helps students remember and perform better on their school work! #122edchat
Yes--and I think it's always a challenge. I build in writing because it's the quickest, easiest way to differentiate learning and providing students with a voice, but helping students design their own learning is a challenge I want to continue to work on. #122edchat
I have to have music playing all day at school. If it stops we all kinda look around ... when I'm at home working I have it going too. Definitely helps me focus & helps when I'm in a funky mood too! #122edchat
A5. I have Ss of various grade levels where differentiated learning is needed at times per Ss. I want the Ss to feel comfortable in the room. They listen to music. Some like to take their shoes off as long as they have socks on. #122edchat
A5: sadly I have several, for different reasons. One is smart but doesn't want anyone to know he is, so he acts up and refuses to do work to stay "cool and dumb". SO frustrating as a T!! ... #122edchat ...
A5p2: ... another who has recently decided that there is NOBODY in the class he will work with whether it is group, partner, or independent work and stands in back corner of room (including during my formal today!)... still trying to find out what is troubling him #122edchat
Agreed.
I've done this for a few years now, and it makes all the difference. Let them decorate, make it home, and trust them to make good decisions. #122edchat
So great to have all of the #rowvastrong students here in #122edchat tonight - I am blown away, encouraged and inspired by your responses! It's amazing to see such strong future leaders in action. There are #122edchat
A5. I think it’s so important to take the time to listen to every student and be willing to change your own teaching style/lesson to find how different students learn best! #troll209#122edchat

Being comfortable in class is one of the best ways to focus. There was a class where the chairs were uncomfortable and I wasn't able to focus at all! #122edchat
That is so awesome! Sometimes my English teacher has music playing in the mornings when students are walking in. It can honestly change your mood right around if you hear the right song! #122edchat
Has anyone read "Quiet"? It's on my list...I'm a super extrovert so tend to shock my shy kids...until they start singing and dancing too! But until then, they can meet and present with/to me privately. Email is a great way for introverts to 'speak' with me too. #122edchat
I agree, the students should be writing about topics that relate to themselves. It could definitely make them more likely to continue to be interested in learning in the future. #122edchat
That second person sounds troublingly like me. I don't think there's anything wrong with me, I just don't like working with people, as I believe that they will mess up my work. (Continued.) #122edchat

I have some students who prefer group work over individual work and vice versa. I’ve been trying to create lessons that incorporate both aspects. #122edchat#troll209
Flexible seating definitely helps some students to focus more and definitely helps the mood of the classroom! Hard plastic chairs can take a huge toll on students’ moods. Comfortable students are happy students! #122edchat
and email staff...ask for what you need...teachers may be willing to trade what they have for what you have! and we all have weird stuff in our garages...yard sales and second hand stores work too! Just don't expect anything to match, lol! #122edchat
A5: the only answer I have, as a teacher and a human, is patience and empathy. Continue to dialogue, listen, engage, and support as the S develops self-efficacy to learn and show knowledge *in some way*. #MoveForward#NoStagnation#122edchat#rowvastrong
I like to know if I am doing the right things and if I am pleasing the teacher. I almost with that instead of just P/T conferences, we also had S/T conferences #122edchat

So maybe they're just introverts and that there's not actually anything wrong with them. I always resented it when people forced me to work with someone when I didn't want to. I just don't like group projects. #122edchat
It is so nice knowing that some teachers will never hold grudges against students with different situations because they even tell us about their problems once in a while too. It makes me as a student feel so much more comfortable and open to them. #122edchat
I love this! I believe that most students will try harder and be more productive if they know that they will be rewarded and recognized for their work! #122edchat
When I have shy kids look at me a certain way, I literally ask them "Do you want me to go away now?" and they say yes, ha ha! I am cool with that. #122edchat
OMG - YES! My 7th graders and I sit and chat about what they believe their grade should be and WHY. They're some of my favorite conversations. https://t.co/rSqdYbxnin#122edchat

Its nice to know your teacher is a human being, right? I had a high school teacher that did that for me & is why I'm a teacher today, Just trying to make her proud :D #122edchat
This is exactly why I allow so much more conversation in my classroom than other Ts tend to - I realized very quickly that my Ss needed that! #122edchat
I like being allowed to go to the library during class time or outside if it is nice. It keeps the learning environment fresh and not boring #122edchat
I'm with you. They show me evidence, and they decide the grade. It's very difficult for some, but I think they all believe it's fair. Thanks for this discussion! I love hearing from #rowvastrong peeps! #122edchat

Best chat I've been a part of all week! Thanks to the moderators and all of the amazing students that were a part. Students - YOU ARE WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO. Keep being awesome. Stay engaged. Find your voice and use it often. #122edchat

I try to mix it up. Sometimes, I allow the students to choose their own groups. Sometimes I draw random sticks. Sometimes, I split them up by ability level or interest. #122edchat
Everyone has bad days. I will be honest with kids if I am 'off' and I have apologized for my mood on more than one occasion...but usually no matter my mood, the students always perk me up...which is why I prefer kids to adulta (Shh, don't tell #122edchat tee hee).
Yes! It’s much easier to focus in a comfortable seat like that! @tsuejohnson is my Advanced English III teacher and another thing that she has in her classroom is a bucket full of small fidget toys! These help students focus also! Especially those with ADHD! #122edchat
That is a very good idea! I love when teachers try to get to know their students better! It helps a lot with connecting better with them, and being able to relate to students. #122edchat
A1: I'm learning from the #rowvastrong students in #122edchat - their knowledge and advice will help me better serve my own students tomorrow! #betheone
A5:I flat out asked one in private today if he was happy in school and in classes. It caught him off guard! I have ss fill out a survey in the beginning of the year and refer to it when I see ss disengaged and ask them about interests. Relationships are everything! #122edchat
I just have to share...
