#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to . Your moderators tonight are and (the recently engaged!!) me
Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
For the next 30 min my tweets will be dedicated to Join or lurk! Topic: What can Starbucks teach us about badging?
I'll be multi-tasking for the next several minutes as I participate in
Happy New Year Lucas! Great to see you here and thx for joining us!
Hi! I'm Shelly. I use badges for my professional development & online teaching. Digital Barnes motivate my learners
Using badges for Students and with Teacher PD!
Stoked to learn more about both of your use cases, Lucas!
Congrats on the blog! Excited to catch up on your thinking!
First, thanks for joining at our new time. We'll be at 6:30pmET and will be a quick, mighty little chat for 30 min each week
Kelly from Tahoe! I love me some badges!
Ready for our first question of 2016?
Q1: What have we seen with Starbucks' Badges work?
A1 - There's something to building brand loyalty. What can translate to classrooms?
A1: I like how easy it is to keep track mobile wise with Starbucks. Be great if it was that easy for students to check
. - Agreed. Instantaneous feedback and mobile platform are ideal.
Both great points that hit (I think) on motivation...
. - Awesome. Can we do the same with classrooms? Subject matter?
it's a cost-effective way to acknowledge "accomplishments"--doesn't cost money--or points
Any thoughts off the top of your head on the brand loyalty?
i'm going to be in and out. Supt just asked me for something!
Learner motivation is key to a successful badge system! https://t.co/M3NZcuRNOZ
Both great points that hit (I think) on motivation...
. - Well, I think there's something to creating "collective identity" among learners in the classroom.
I might even venture a step further, Laura..The recognition can be leveraged as its own currency
I feel like they have more buy-in--would my kids want to use their precious memory on an extra app for my class?
. - Using "we" verbiage and setting collective goals.
Joe here from Aurora, CO... joining a little late.
Agreed! I've seen colleges use rewards points similar to Starbucks for demonstrations of fandom...
indeed, which allows us to make grades work as standards-based feedback instead of currency
Moving to question 2 though I think we're already there...
Q2: What about Starbucks' approach to Badges is effective?
A1 This may speak to what I call "redeemable value" of badges..ie cash-in value, but I'm not familiar w Starbucks badges
A1) gearing up for a reward. I know that I'm on the right path to something great once I get them all.
"instead of" or "and" currency? I'm fan of endorsers offering opportunities to Badge earners
Do we have a good link for the Starbucks stuff? I think I've seen it but I'm not a big Starbucks guy.
...but yes, we do have Starbucks up here. But nobody goes there..it's too crowded.
A2: I think it's effective how clear they make the path >>> "Do *x* and it can unlock *y*"
What I saw f/ Starbucks is pretty explicit commercialization, gamification... it is a way to make those concepts explicit 2 SS
. - I like the idea of currency being used to unlock side content, perks, and cosmetic features.
Ex: when you install, it prompts you to use the store locator. You can then earn the "Bean Chaser" https://t.co/jIJUPY2BfL
would you offer points for certain accomplishments? I think points work differently than $$...
Agreed. The clear earn/reward system might be an example if you wanted to co-design a system with SS. https://t.co/F0dG6Wut5G
A2: I think it's effective how clear they make the path >>> "Do *x* and it can unlock *y*"
. - I think clear paths are important for primary content/goals. I like hidden/easter eggs 4 side/enrichment content.
Simple instructions and steps are necessary for students to do the tasks https://t.co/cw87b9roFj
A2: I think it's effective how clear they make the path >>> "Do *x* and it can unlock *y*"
You beat me to it:) The hidden accomplishments are also quite effective
I like that. I know on Classcraft badges can unlock game privileges OR class privileges
A1 One caveat: you're not buying an education...at least not in the K12 public system...
. - Perhaps not academic points. No reason you can't have multiple lines of of points/levels.
I like both options on a platform https://t.co/VAMSF4J7h6
I like that. I know on Classcraft badges can unlock game privileges OR class privileges
. - Yep! Doing that sort of work with too.
Totally! AND if we think of greater ecosystem, opportunities may be job shadows, internships
not sure my sanity could take all of those points/levels...would the payoff match the effort?
Good point...there's a clear line in the sand there...
Right, they offer both--the game ones are preset, but you choose whatever you want for the others!
It certainly calls for intentional planning to avoid overwhelming yourself and ss
. - It helps to have a tool to manage/build this.
Q3: What badging strategies might we borrow from Starbucks?
A3 I think Starbucks example shows that by badging what users are already doing, we generate interest in a system and rewards.
A3: how users are motivated is a big takeaway as well as the simplicity of the system for any user! Design always important
. - Agreed. I think it's important to reward what folks are already doing.
Fair to add that we also encourage *more* of the behaviors being credentialed?
Love the DESIGN focus. How many of our systems fail not on merit but on bad UX/UI?
A3: Incremental recognition. Goal is to get 25 drinks and feedback is given with each one along the way, not just at end
. Yep. Badges are a way to pay attention to behaviors or assets. System design points 2 learning pathways/opportunities
Q4: What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
Awarding lots of badges tonight...teachers are starting 2016 ready to learn! :)
Thank you for another great & thanks to all mods! Congrats on your recent engagement!
