This twitter chat stands for "Wins And Losses Ed Chat" and will be a chat where students reflect on the previous week to celebrate victories and reflect on losses to turn them into victories.
Hey, everyone here at #waledchat, I'm Jeffery E. Frieden from the City of Ontario, CA. It's been a while since I have been here, and I am excited to mix it up with y'all tonight.
If @Jencoachlife is on Twitter, I hope you check out #waledchat
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Please introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and invite a friend you’d like to join us tonight! #waledchat
Just finished a great #mschat, now it's time to gear up for THE FASTEST 30 MINUTES ON TWITTER!
Hello, #waledchat! Ryan in Michigan, 6th Grade Social Studies
Care to jump over and chat with us, @Beyond_the_Desk?
Hello #waledchat! It’s been a while. Lauren from NY, currently on leave from teaching 6th grade English to write a book about integrating SEL into academics.
Hey #mschat, there's another REALLY AWESOME 30 min chat starting now. Feel free to check out #waledchat. It's a very positive, encouraging, new-idea-bringing part of my weekly routine!
Hey #Waledchat! Louie jumping in for a little bit from Philly. 5th grade teacher in new district. It's been a whirlwind start to the year, but hope to lean and reflect with y'all tonight!
A1 I am really bad about decorating my classroom with S work and learning posters. I could add that.
Also, my Ss meet at tables. I think it would great to add center pieces with flowers and coaster for their hydroflasks.
#waledchat
A1: I want to add more real world and application based problems in my classroom. Ss need to see the relevance to make connections and become fully engaged. #waledchat
A1: I would love to see the pineapple chart concept take off at our schools as well as a great way to share the great things we're doing in each of them.
#waledchat
A1: We have a pretty awesome setup, but new engagements are always welcome. We would love to do more with robotics, namely @Ozobot and @Sphero. #waledchat
A1. As I grow comfortable in my new situation, I'm looking to branch from the prescribed curriculum to create a more engaging experience using both technology and non-tech options. Need to get back to the PIRATE roots! #Waledchat
A1: One thing to add to classroom/ school/ learning environment would be more positive messages, either through posters, or just simply reminding students they are valued. #waledchat
A1: More space and more flexible seating. I like my Ss to move and be comfortable. I have limited space in my room, so I struggle to find arrangements that truly work for some of the learning routines we do. #waledchat
A1: We need too add more Ss thinking and learning around our school, at Ss level. We tend to hang things high, and our littles can't see and interact then. #waledchat
A1: The chance to observe each other to see how we are all putting different instructional strategies or administrative initiatives into practice. We're supposed to start doing this this year, and I'm stoked! #waledchat
A1: II'd love to add bookcases on wheels in our media center. Almost everything else is on wheels now, and that would be the ultimate final touch! #waledchat
A1 - I’d love to add more flexible seating to class. My room is small and I’m really limited by the number of students in class. My goal is to gradually change the dynamics of how kids sit and move. #waledchat
A1: I would love to add more data conversations with our Ss. Our Ts are using data but there is no intentionality behind it. It is my push to get more data out there for Ts and Ss to utilize! #waledchat
A1: More opportunities for teachers and students to share their passions with one another. When we take time to strength relationships, and learn about one another in the process, everyone benefits! #waledchat
A1 If I were in charge of redesigning the school environment, I’d put in a learning kitchen for culinary arts, a kitchen garden, an outdoor classroom, and paintable walls. Kids need more spaces to play and create. #waledchat
I often feel this way in my pullout math class. My Ss want to know why and sometimes (sadly) I don't have a reason and struggle with real-world connections. #waledchat
A1: More opportunities for teachers and students to share their passions with one another. When we take time to strength relationships, and learn about one another in the process, everyone benefits! #waledchat
A1~
~less desks, more round tables & a bigger makerspace ~ we call it our D. I.C.E. Zone.... for discovery, investigations, inquiry, curiosity, creativity & explorations
#waledchat
A1: More books that I could share with my kiddos- possibly even a reading nook for lunch bunch times or for a quiet retreat for kiddos who need a place to decompress #waledchat
A1 I would love to have more flexible seating. Right now I have 6 yoga balls and Ss are allowed to move from their tables to a more comfortable spot. These pictures are from before we received our rug (9x12) #waledchat
A2 The Ss work as decorations + learning posters would definitely promote learning.
The centerpieces would just make the place feel a bit more like home.
#waledchat
A1: A hard question.. how about some pixie dust to further challenge all to take purposeful risks... to disrupt their routines! @MrPStrunk@KTuttleEDU@PHausTech#waledchat
As an elementary science teacher, I would love to add some more living organisms, plants, animals, little creatures for observation and care. #waledchat
A1 I would love to have a mindfulness/zen lab or space. A place where Ts and Ss could go to breathe and regroup! Everything is so busy and fast paced in schools! We need a slow down space! #waledchat
A1: More storytelling. We had an awesome discussion today after our story about the origin of the big bang. Kids were engaged & blew me away with their questions. #waledchat
A2: It would allow for more flexibility in use of the space. Ss would be able to move anything in our space anywhere they wanted to suit the purpose of the experience. #waledchat
A2: Student learning increases when they have to explain something to a peer - and kids learn better from each other! Engagement is increased, and Ss are able to practice their communication and collaboration skills. #waledchat
A2: I believe both pineapple charts and knowing of people's successes would help further enhance the great cultures we have and help all members grow.
#waledchat
A2: For starters, I think it would offer more comfortable seating for my students to do collaborative work. It would also help my students make their trenches more easily when we learn about WWI! #waledchat
A2: It would definitely diversify the options that we currently have to offer out students, as of now. In addition, it would give them a chance to interact more with computer science. #waledchat
A2: Adding a sense of comfort to the classroom and giving Ss ownership of their space creates an environment that they want to come back to, not because they have to. #waledchat
A2: It would make the learning experience much more valuable for my students. I don't often get asked the ? "when will we ever use this?" but I want to make it obvious why this is important. #waledchat
A2: oh gosh!! Well in all honesty it would be more purposeful play time- exploration is the best and students love learning through play..... I’m working on integrating all those amazing pieces but like everything it takes baby steps 🙃 #waledchat
A2: More books and authentic places to read would motivate students to enjoy reading and desire more time to read independently. First grade is a reading year! #waledchat
A2: I have so many students that need to move while learning. Standing, dancing, moving...it would get them to be productive on their own terms and meet their needs. #waledchat
A2: Adding more books & a reading nook would encourage more independent reading as well as provide an outlet for Ss when they needed to “get away” for a few moments without really ever leaving #waledchat
A2: Adding more positive messages throughout space students are using provides visual and verbal reminders that even though learning and life events can be challenging, school should be a safe place. #waledchat
A2 A mindfulness/zen lab would help our students regain control of their emotions and give them a space to regroup. Ts could benefit from a quiet place to hit the reset button every now and then! #waledchat
A2: Adding discussion helps students learn to appreciate differing perpectives and ideas and argue/justify their own using evidence in a nonconfrontational, knowledge seeking way :) #waledchat
A2: We are likely to receive good teaching ideas from each other better than from an outside consultant or presenter. This would be a good way for us to celebrate each other and learn from each other. #waledchat
A2: sharing more Ss learning/work would help give Ts a better understanding of what is happening in other grades. Ss get to share and learn from one another. We do good things, lets share and explore. #waledchat
A2. My classroom is anything but traditional. I have a lot of kiddos who like to stand and move while they work. Giving them a space meant for that would mean they wouldn’t be bent over our seated tables. Kids are flexible and will make anything work though! #waledchat
A2 - The sitting would promote socialization and get students moving. The positive piece is a school culture thing. You can never have too much positve energy. #teachpos#waledchat
A3 I would take away my SMART board. That piece of equipment add ABSOLUTELY NO value to my teaching and takes up whiteboard real estate.
Also, the furniture in my room is terrible! The tables are too wide and the chairs are too heavy.
#waledchat
Haha! Wow! That’s awesome, Diane! I made those Snapguides for my daughter - if anything happened to me, I wanted her to have recipes from her childhood meals! The honey baked ham is her favorite! https://t.co/an48uYVa6O#waledchat
A2: I would hope that it would encourage kids to pay closer attention to the natural world building an appreciation for living things and an interest in taking good care of it #waledchat
A3: I would love to take away any isolation that Ss and Ts feel. With the many avenues we have available, I would love for our learning community to always feel supported.
#waledchat
A3: I have a Western Frontier Twitter Chat assignment I do with my students. Ss told me this week that Twitter is for old people and no one uses it... may be time to nix the assignment for something more relevant. #waledchat@ERobbPrincipal@KTuttleEDU
A3: Our pneumatics table. Ugh. Not enough to hold people's attention for a 7-day engagement. Ends up being a perfect location to congregate and goof around. #waledchat
A2 Adding laptops with inking capabilities would make it easier to give feedback to the Ss and also make the assignments more visual for My ELLs. #waledchat
A2~
A classroom 🐶 teaches responsibility, fosters unconditional love, best reading buddies ever ❤️... 🙏my new fabulous Principal is reading this 😊🐶🐶
#waledchat
A3: I make really good use of my space and have rid my room of anything that is not needed or taking up student-space. If I had to choose...it would be my desk... #waledchat
A3: unnecessary work. Ss need practical and real world applications. I’m working with my Ts to eliminate the unnecessary and focus on the essentials! #waledchat
If we can find the time to have fun with our colleagues, then we can very well find the time to have fun with our students. It is so important to have a sense of humor. I try! @MrPStrunk@ToddRisser@VThompson1981

A3: What would I like to take away? Grades and standardized testing. Kids get so distracted by those 2 things that they miss the importance of learning. #waledchat
A3: I'd take away the negativity some people, even within our profession, have toward middle grades kids, especially in regard to behaviors that are simple developmentally appropriate adolescent behaviors. #waledchat
A3: I would take away the horrible carpet! I am not a fan of carpet anyway, and no matter how often we have it cleaned, it gets dirty again so quickly. #waledchat
A3. I’m a total education hoarder, so don’t take my stuff! Haha Okay, actually, I have an old CRT TV in my room and when the kids notice it I tell them that I don’t even know if it works. If could definitely go. 😉 #waledchat
A3: I would take away the horrible carpet! I am not a fan of carpet anyway, and no matter how often we have it cleaned, it gets dirty again so quickly. #waledchat
A2 Art therapy has so much research behind it showing the benefits for students, it would be a wonderful asset to our building. Plus help instill more of a love for the arts. #waledchat
A2: Ss need flexible options for seating, as it would improve the ability to differentiate more tasks and allow Ss to spread out and work more collaboratively. #waledchat
A2: Ss are so comfortable using tech. It opens up a world to explore, share, create with, and learn from. Ts could move their lessons and students’ experiences beyond their classrooms. Tech creates greater opps for visual and auditory learning to occur. #waledchat
A3: I'd take away the negativity some people, even within our profession, have toward middle grades kids, especially in regard to behaviors that are simple developmentally appropriate adolescent behaviors. #waledchat
A3 - I’d take away small desks and uncomfortable chairs. I still don’t get how we expect students to be seated all day in chairs and desks that we wouldn’t sit in. #waledchat
A3: All the worksheets. Too much sit & get. On a chat earlier this week about brain energizers. If we had more authentic learning happening then the need for so many brain breaks could be reduced. #waledchat
A3: I have these triangular desks that I really hate. The are supposed to make groupings much easier, but they are oddly shaped and seem to fall over easily. #waledchat
A3 My first thought was the number of standardized tests. But the other thing would definitely be paperwork that doesn’t directly relate to Ss. #waledchat
A4 I don't need a SMART board. I need a way to write on the board quickly. Actually, if I could go back to A1, I would say just turn all of my walls into whiteboards. I would love to have Ss up and writing all around the room.
#waledchat
A3: The enormous amount of stress in the air! Ts are overwhelmed & I’m afraid Ss are going to begin picking up on it if they haven’t already. We have to do better at supporting one another & being part of the solution rather than adding to the problem #waledchat
I was teaching in someones room using the doc camera on the smart board and I almost wrote on the smart board thinking it was a white board with a real marker. Take the smart board away, it's a glorified projector. #waledchat
A4: The activities associated are not complex enough to have people attached for extended periods. To counteract this downfall, we have built in Digital Sandbox as an option, so students can create and control digital circuits powered by code. #waledchat
A4: Removing the feeling of isolation can lead to amazing things. Knowing you're supported allows for taking risks and knowing there's never a failure you can't grow from.
#waledchat
A4: Ss might take more ownership of their work with the pressure of a deadline off their shoulders. Unfortunately, this would probably not work for all Ss. #waledchat
A4: Without grades or standardized tests to worry about, Ss would only focus on learning and growing their minds. I think they would feel much more accomplished by looking at what all they have learned and not that they got a B or failed a test. #waledchat
A4: I think it will help make the learning in my class more relevant for my students. I can come up with new, more innovative ideas to engage students in my content. #waledchat
A2. In Science and research, form a hypothesis, our Ss learn about the phenomena taking place. They make observations, gather evidence or data to back up their obser.,results, discussion as to why, conclusion or sommary! #waledchat
A4: It would give our media center the updated look we want. It would also eliminate many germs, allergies, food stains, etc. from the meetings we have regularly in our space. #waledchat
A3 I would take a way the lack of desire to see things through the eyes of a child or through the eyes of someone who is different than oneself #waledchat
A4. Loosing the tv would create more wall space to showcase student work. Loosing the teacher desk created more collaborative space for my students and me. #waledchat
A4: Well, quite frankly, it would respect these human beings we serve who are at the most awkward & potentially the most challenging time of their lives. The reality is that we have a powerful impact on them, but are we having a powerfully positive impact? Not always. #waledchat
A4 - How about helping kids to feel they are valued. Allowing for comfort is the minimum expectation we should have. 7-8 hours in one place, calls for seating and movement that promotes a love of learning. #waledchat
A3: The constant pursuit of perfection. With technology, there is something that always has the possibility of going wrong/not working. Don’t allow that to be an excuse to not try something new! #waledchat
A4: I don't really know that taking physical things away (ie. the desks) would really make any difference. I seem to be making it work in spite of their existence. I would, however, like to eliminate negative talk during the month of Oct. #waledchat
A3~
~ Id take away the typical old school teacher’s room & make it into a coffee/Cafe style setting with goodies galore, fabulous seating & TONS of laughter ❤️
#waledchat
A4 - How about helping kids to feel they are valued. Allowing for comfort is the minimum expectation we should have. 7-8 hours in one place, calls for seating and movement that promotes a love of learning. #waledchat
I just use my small group table and cabinet space instead of a teacher desk and LOVE it. I have far less clutter. I did keep a small nightstand for papers I need at hand. #waledchat
A4: My hope is that it would give Ts the ability to think creatively outside the box and get creative with their teaching as well as Ss getting creative with their thinking and learning. #waledchat
A4: “Failure” - ie getting unwanted, unexpected results - is an important step in the learning and creative process... “Failure, the best teacher is...” #waledchat

Snapchat anyone? How can we take aspects of a platform they love and integrate our content. Better yet, have your Ss help you redesign the lesson and give him credit each time you do it! Win-win! #waledchat

A5 There are so many things I love about my school, but the best part is the people. I love my fellow #ELATeachers and my Ss. They are the great!
#waledchat
A4: IF we were able to eliminate the stress then I think the climate would improve, Ts would feel less overwhelmed & probably more inclined to be more innovative in their teaching. In order to do this, everyone must accept responsibility to make a positive impact #waledchat
A4: Taking away the excessive amount of assessments for students with special needs, would alleviate some of their frustrations during the day as well as feelings of failure or not being as good as their peers #waledchat
A4: With less worksheets and sit and get Ss would be able to create and explore in real time, work to figure out real world operations and how to really communicate and collaborate. #waledchat
A5: My favorite part of my learning environment is the community feel of it. Each person values what others can offer and we push each other to never be good with the status quo.
#waledchat
A5: My favorite part is connecting with the students and watching them succeed. Right now, they're practicing building their own blocks in @scratch - it's amazing to see how excited they get when they're successful with their code! #waledchat
A5: Our space is a break from the traditional approach to education. Our activities are mostly hands-on and afford students the opportunity to explore and question while communicating and collaborating with others. Why wouldn't you want to be a part of this adventure? #waledchat
A5: This year it has been the technology innovation that has become so accessible thanks to us going 1:1 this year. It is not just technology though, innovation is flowing from my Ss and all over @JWMSGoCougars! #waledchat@ERobbPrincipal@KTuttleEDU@DrCBishop
A4 I could focus on the learning and if they get it or not, instead of trying to quantify it. Ss would have to focus on the feedback and learning not the "grades"
#waledchat
I would like to take away the stress over the “little things”. For students. For teachers. For parents. Focus on the big ideas of family, community, growth, positivity. #waledchat

A5: my Ts and Ss! So blessed to be at the school I’m at. Strong team, strong sense of being successful for my Ss, and my fellow admin are supportive of our team. #waledchat
A5:M favorite thing is how forgiving my students are! I’m a human, my plans don’t always go the way I expect and schedules get messy! I love their gentle reminders, empathy on days that start bad and the notes that remind me they love me anyway! #waledchat
A1: 2nd answer... tomorrow is pd day... I am presenting social media to a school. What I really want is all of you to join us at 10:10am and beyond for #wcsdrocks as we discuss the importance of #PLN . #waledchat I want them to know how much my #PLN rocks 💕
A5 Peine Ridge Elementary is an amazing place to be and that is because of the entire staff and the Students. We have amazing people who light that place up! I am honored to work for such amazing people. #peinepride#waledchat
A5: My favorite part of my classroom is the design. There are positive quotes and sayings as well as mindfullness posters/sayings, and posters supporting race, diversity, and LGBTQ+. my design offers opportunities to ask questions and getting to know me #waledchat
A5: (other than the Ss, of course) Our vast campus. We have a very large campus with large areas to investigate problems together. I want to convert our sidewalk area into a game board so we can play World Geography Monopoly. Anyone have extra large inflatable dice? #waledchat
At: In an old industrial era building, hardwood floors with a rug, my wall are painted an awesome shade of blue, action figures on duct work, Star Wars spaceships handing from pipes, gamers table w/ stuffed animals, tables instead of desks... love my school & room!!!#waledchat
A5~
~ the fabulous caring, class & strong sense of community we have built in our classroom ~ super special place for all of us to be the best version of ourselves ~❤️
#waledchat
A5. Can I be cheesy? My favorite part is my kids. I get so much joy out of watching them grow into creative problem-solvers. I love their stories. I love their corny jokes. Sixth grade is THE best! #waledchat
A5: My physical favorite part of my space is the VR room, or the flexible seating - I love both pretty good, lol! My favorite part of the space is my Ss when they come in to say hello! #waledchat
A5: It’s a tie between Worksheet Busters and our gamification system. Worksheet Busters make our daily learning fun-yet-meaningful. The gamification leads to motivation to keep trying for mastery long after a unit’s done. #waledchat
A5 - The students❤️❤️❤️❤️. They make the day and class energetic and a great place. We have pictures, quotes and charts all over class tat students have done. They are the heart and soul of class. I often sit back and watch them. They think I’m crazy! #waledchat
And so I'd spend ALL this time building relationships and culture only to undercut myself with a light hearted remark taken the wrong way. For no reason other than my own amusement. Definitely have done a lot of reflection on this. #waledchat
A4: if we could take away stress over the “little things” we would be healthier, happier and more productive. We’d be able to smile and share our positive energy with others. It’s contagious! #waledchat
