The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to #INeLearn Chat. We will begin with introductions. Your moderators are Amy Moore (artsy) & Bill Stein (fartsy) with the Control Art Delete EDTECH podcast @CADPODCAST1! Amy is an eLearning Coach for @MSDNorthPoseyCo and Bill is a Director of Tech for @msdofmtvernon.
According to Psychology Today, half a million teachers leave the profession each year. And even for those who don't, this time of year can still cause smaller scale teacher burnout. Tonight's subject: “Tech tools & resources to avoid teacher burnout." #INeLearn
Kevin from Indianapolis @LCHSBears. I teach biology and Earth/Space Science and serve as an eCoach. Listening to 3 pre-teens upstairs for my daughter’s 12th birthday. #INeLearn
John from Anderson Comm. Schools - Technology Integration. I'm just reading, running and catching up on errands. And participating in my first Twitter chat! #INeLearn
Hello #INeLearn and our guest moderators! Michelle here. No spring break for the DOE, but my daughter in on break next week so we're going on college visit.
Side note: We will be recording some of our podcast during tonight’s #INeLearn chat! Who knows you, may end up on the podcast which will air tomorrow at 9AM CST/10 EST. You can find us on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podbean, etc. or on our website at https://t.co/RroST4A9D9
Good evening from Indy. Former science T & librarian, now working for Indiana Middle Level Educ Assoc. Not exactly spring break, but recent highlight was going to Detroit for Purdue & Butler games. #INeLearn
Let’s get started! Q1 will feed the rest of our chat. Here it is! Don’t forget the #INeLearn hashtag and remember R is for Response. If lurking is more your style, that's okay, but don't hesitate to jump in anytime! #INeLearn
Q1 With testing, field trips and cramming in curriculum, many teachers find their workload increases this time of year. How can we use technology to cope with the ever-growing demand for our time? #INeLearn
Hello everyone! I teach Bio and PLTW in the small town of Poseyville, IN. Spending my break on a pool raft in my backyard. Not sure who ordered all the rain. First time inelearn participant. Forever fan of @CADPODCAST1 😍🤘🏻#INelearn
R1: not sure tech helps or hurts this time of year. We can do virtual field trips, online responses to content questions, webquests, etc. Unfortunately, this takes time also to set up. #INeLearn
Q1 With testing, field trips and cramming in curriculum, many teachers find their workload increases this time of year. How can we use technology to cope with the ever-growing demand for our time? #INeLearn
R1: Effective use of technology can save time. Examples include real time grading and feedback, recording of lectures for reuse and reinforcement, and completion of traditionally manual tasks (such as spell checking). A little time goes a long way. #INeLearn

R1: Hi all! Janna, tech coach up in Porter County. I’ve been playing with Google calendar reminders to keep my work life together. Sharing this with my Ts when we get back next week. #INeLearn
Q2 Lack of resources is another cause of teacher burnout. When resources are short, we often spend our own money to help students and keep lessons engaging. How can technology help teachers stretch limited resources and find new avenues for obtaining resources? #INeLearn
Q1 With testing, field trips and cramming in curriculum, many teachers find their workload increases this time of year. How can we use technology to cope with the ever-growing demand for our time? #INeLearn
I know a lot of Ts who do special activities the afternoons of testing; schedules are already disrupted, so it's a great time to do genius hour, Breakout EDU, etc. #INeLearn
R1: I find this is the time of year my students appreciate a change in routine. They are ready to switch up how their work is presented. The week before SB I assigned my first Lucidchart and Flipgrid of the year and was pleasantly surprised w/ results #inelearn
R2 Tap the kids. Let them use their phones (gasp!). Between that and using a tech station, you can get lots of online resources in the hands of more S's #INeLearn
R2: like everything, it is important to provide Ss with time to explore any new tech. Assuming that Ss know how it works because “they are digital natives” is a fallacy. #INeLearn
Q3 Many teachers experience burnout from teaching the same content year in and year out. Innovators: What advice do you have for these teachers experiencing the pain of monotony? #INeLearn
R3: REFLECT. Look at the good things and bad things that have happened with what has been done in the past. Change those things that didn’t work. Make it more Ss centered. Have Ss be creative with what and how they learn. #INeLearn
R3: I love the idea of letting students build the lesson. One of our T's had S's evaluate the quizzes in Kahoot against the standard to determine the best ones. #INeLearn
R:3 Allow yourself to be vulnerable!!!! Tell your kids you are going to try something new today, something you have never tried and you don’t know if it is going to work, but you are going to do it together! #inElearn#tscschools
Q3 Many teachers experience burnout from teaching the same content year in and year out. Innovators: What advice do you have for these teachers experiencing the pain of monotony? #INeLearn
The end of the year is a great time to ask students what they enjoyed most about the year. Then, we can tailor future lessons based on their likes and dislikes. #INeLearn
R3 Was it @DonWettrick who's father said, "Teach for 30 years, but don't teach the same year 30 times." #INeLearn I couldn't imagine how awful that would feel for the kids, much less as the classroom leader! Being a lead learner is so much more fun!
R3: Sounds like a perfect time to let students choose their paths and find the content that is interesting to them. Great opportunity to incorporate info literacy skills. The state library provides access to academic databases for FREE. #INeLearn
A few years ago, when our district first migrated to #gsuite we did this together. It was a true learning #edventure and it was the best thing I could have done. We learned the apps together. We were a team. It was true synergy. #inelearn
This is probably the best advice regarding tech use. Students are always willing to help if they know we're willing to admit we don't know everything. #INeLearn
R3. I am so sick of PowerPoint, so I tried Adobe Spark this year. Learned it with the Ss who I think secretly liked it when I didn’t know the answer #INeLearn
Q4 Lackluster student to teacher relationships can make any teacher tired and overwhelmed. Are kids really worse than they use to be? What role has technology played in the way our students act? #INeLearn
Q4 Technology did wonders for my relationships with students by being an efficient way for me to interact with student writing.
My feedback was timely, genuine, and personal. #INeLearn
R4: kids are kids are kids. We need to hold kids accountable. Tech CAN be a detriment if not monitored or if expectations aren’t set early. They can also be a benefit for Ss who don’t communicate well in front of their peers. #INeLearn
And we often forget how important it is to be timely. Students want to know how they did and what they can improve upon, and they want to know quickly! #INeLearn
#INeLearn A4 Making learning relevant! Our HS CE class had a discussion with a class from Monterrey Mexico over current events affecting both countries. On 4/4, our sociology class will be discussing gender inequality with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷.
R4: Started teaching in 1976. Ss probably have more distractions, but for the most part are the same. Ts, on the other hand, have so many ways to engage individual students. Tech makes Differentiation easy. #INeLearn
Otherwise, they won't even remember the work or what parts they struggled with and what parts they triumphed on! Making the feedback meaningless! #INeLearn
#INeLearn A4 Also have had our Ss as active participants in government by having the opportunity to have q/a with their US Senators Joe Donnelly and Todd Young.
Relationships with both kids and parents as the most important part of education. Connections and caring are at the heart of what we do as teachers. Kids have changed, as they should, but we as teachers can always be improving! #inelearn#tscschools
R4: evolution exists. Ha, got my bio standards covered for the day. We must adapt to our Ss. Yes, they have changed, but have we changed to help them succeed? #INeLearn
Q5 And to follow up on question 4, what can we do to better reach today’s connected youth and improve relationships between students and teachers? #INeLearn
Technology has been changing and evolving since before the "when I was your age-ers" were born. As teachers, we must model how GREAT this is, rather than preaching about the negatives of change/tech. #INeLearn
I agree. The real frustration Ts experience is when they don't change with the times. Not to be trendy, but to be relevant. Note: engagement does not have to be tech-driven #INeLearn
I like to bring "my age" into the classroom and show my kids what that means! It can be fun and a great way to build connections. @YouCanDoRubiks is a great free resource for this! #inelearn#tscschools
R5: Once you find the S's interests, it's much easier to use tech to share info about what they are into. When they realize you know about them you can connect. #INeLearn
R5: even though we have tech, we still need to communicate F2F with our Ss. With that said, my Ss hav my email address, @CanvasLMS info, and @remind101 info to get a hold of me for ?s 24/7. Yes, I am their T 24/7, not just the hour and a half every other day. #INeLearn
R5 meet Ss where they are — IG, email, LMS, google docs, hallway, handwritten work. I need to listen & connect however they want to reach out. (Sorry for late join. 7th gr ELA from Indy) #inelearn
R5: We have to move far, far away from using tech primarily for gotcha. Plagiarism checkers and screen monitoring are not the end game for tech in edu, and they have the potential to destroy relationships if too much focus is on those gotcha tools. #INeLearn
And connecting with students is not only so important, it's a lot of fun, too! We hope everyone went into this "business" because we enjoy connecting with students! #INeLearn
Remember rules are for the 5% that break them. Give flexibility to Ss to explore and pres boundaries. This is where innovation takes place. Why have boundaries that preach compliance? #INeLearn
Great point, Martie! We need to be willing to adapt to meet the communication needs of each student, just as we alter and adapt lessons to meet the educational needs of each student. #INeLearn
Remember rules are for the 5% that break them. Give flexibility to Ss to explore and pres boundaries. This is where innovation takes place. Why have boundaries that preach compliance? #INeLearn
So true. Many teachers latch on to these early in the game as a result of fear. But it's so much more fun to take risks than live in fear of what the tech can do! #INeLearn
Ts need to feel invigorated to try new things for their Ss instead of feeling like if they mess up it reflects on their evaluations. We learn in that boundary of unexpected results. #INeLearn
A5: Be present. Be their cheerleaders , counselors, guiding support and motivator when needed. Know when to be each. Go to their extra curriculars. #INeLearn
Q6 Teacher burnout is hard to avoid when teachers don’t feel respected and supported by their administration. How can technology allow administrators to lead and support their staff? #INeLearn
Maybe admins that take risks should be rewarded by upper level admins instead of shunned and told “this isn’t the way it has been done around here for x number of years.” Yes, my former life. #INeLearn
In reply to
@JohnSedwick, @CADPODCAST1, @techbrarianDSC
YES! If there is no structure, students feel overwhelmed. If there is too much structure, students feel bored/overwhelmed.
Find that happy place, make it work for you. #INeLearn
R6: I think I hit on this in my last posts. Admins are often out of the trenches and have no concept of what Ts go through. What if admins would visit or teach a class from time to time. Go to PD sessions, learn new techniques. #INeLearn
R6 One of the smallest but certainly powerful action is to RT what Ts share from their classrooms. I think the admin doing this rock! The real rockstars will visit the classroom to see more and tweet their takeaways #INeLearn
R6 admin who are willing to try new things (& maybe even “fail” {which I view very little as TRUE failure}) and give staff space to try new things too #growthmindset#INeLearn
R6: Admins are busy too, but tech allows them to "drop in" on classes, stay informed of meetings, acknowledge T's with Tweets and pics. Share the good things! #INeLearn
R6 Tech gives them the opportunity to participate!!
How amazing would it be if admin made a @Flipgrid or showed up in a @CanvasLMS discussion? #INeLearn
Unfortunately, there are some upper level admins and building admins that create a culture of mediocrity that can negate any positive growth with tech. Everyone MUST be onboard to make strides that benefit the needs of Ss #INeLearn
R6 Dont make EVERYONE file into the media center for a meeting after school if there are educated professionals that could take the initiative to learn and demonstrate they got "it" via digital #INeLearn
Seeing admin pop into classes and interact with students is perhaps more important than they realize. The teachers notice, and more importantly, the kids notice. #INeLearn
Wrote about exactly that plan in my admin class last semester. Admin need to cover classes weekly & even regularly teach. (Maybe that’s not possible but seems it should be a goal). #INeLearn
R6: When Admins acknowledge technology usage by Ts to engage Ss, they support deeper learning in their schools. Admins need to note this in evals to support more engagement! #INeLearn
R6. Perhaps admins could learn how to use the edtech themselves to communicate with staff and students instead of just preaching its benefits #INeLearn

I made it happen, and I taught a full year of bio while being a MS principal. It can be done. My best year professionally with understanding my kids that I served. I knew what they needed and wanted in a school. #INeLearn
Q6: when my teacher burnout starts to “kick in” I have a hard time pushing myself to try new things. An Ideal time for admin to allow Ts to lead faculty mtgs to highlight cool tech tools used over the yr. When I am riding my struggle bus, my creativity takes a hit. #INeLearn
Q7 A positive school culture goes so far in keeping teachers happy and fulfilled in their profession. How can technology contribute to positive school culture and be used to improve stakeholder relationships? #INeLearn
A7: So technology (1:1) has added a little bit of fear/stress/anxiety/resentment into our school culture and it has broken my heart. We need more personalized PD ops for ALL because edtech can break down the walls and allow for so much more T collaboration/growth. #INeLearn
Q7 A positive school culture goes so far in keeping teachers happy and fulfilled in their profession. How can technology contribute to positive school culture and be used to improve stakeholder relationships? #INeLearn
Funny, I was the opposite. When my burnout kicked in, I tended to be a lot more freelance and would toss any fear of failure out the window. It's how I came to love gallery walk poetry reads. #INeLearn

R7: So many great things go on in schools, but Ts are so busy with their own work that they often don't know. Tech can help share the successes and aid collaboration. #INeLearn
R7: if we don’t show our stakeholders the great things going on, someone else will tell their story about what we are doing and that story MIGHT not be the reality of what’s going on (2/2) #INeLearn
