Q1: How has professional development changed since you started teaching? What has been gained/lost? https://t.co/Ii2xcaKKpq
Q1 again: How has professional development changed since you started teaching? What has been gained/lost? https://t.co/38Nd1hNVWH
A1 - More T's are taking control of their development & are looking to other T's rather then out of classroom experts
When I trained the professional was deep in the grips of the National Num & Lit Strategies and Learning styles where the in thing!
A1 I think that now I get most of my CPD on my terms through things like Twitter!
Q1 Gained valuable CPD from my Union in early days of teaching. Lots of collaboration too amongst probationers.Found it valuable
Is that happening both within the school and reaching out to outside colleagues too?
more Cpd completed in school rather than attending courses. Financial reasons.
you've got my attention! Sadly it overlaps with . Difficult choices.
Have you ever thought of running a murder mystery in your school? We can provide everything you need! https://t.co/QTHzk9MsZP
Q1 Think we are now far more open to observing each other in classrooms. This wasn't always case!
Teachers get a lot more ownership of their CPD now than 10 years ago when there was a lot of being talked at
in my experience it tends to be reaching out to outside colleagues rather then in school but things are changing slowly
can be beneficial to learn from others internally but don't always hear different opinions
No posh lunch! 🙁 Happening for small scale too, or just whole school initiatives?
Twitter has enabled more teachers to share outstanding practice & take ownership of their prof development
Q2 Which events/courses/insets have had the most impact on your teaching over the past 12 months?
Me too, totally agree. https://t.co/AVPQ95N5i8
A1 I think that now I get most of my CPD on my terms through things like Twitter!
Why do you think that is? Modesty among close colleagues?
I find it's far more useful seeing something in action rather than just being told about it
The time to be released from class seems tighter. Cover more difficult to get...
Agreed, very much depends on what sort of school you are in. Good to widen horizons! https://t.co/RFhdGq4Cdz
can be beneficial to learn from others internally but don't always hear different opinions
I know many teachers who need a good talking too! 😉 Is the guidance there for the 'unknown unknowns'?
Q1 Most teachers taking charge of own learning and CPD now.
Want to re-paint your classrooms for free? Find out about our community free paint scheme here https://t.co/j6V7H7q8n2
Schools are now starting to put the 'Professional' into professional development & not just death by PowerPoint
Q2 Not many courses and insets on offer these days, I think. Best learning through speed-dating type activities
Yes, seeing new strategies/styles/software in action great way of learning.
but I also think that there isn't always the opportunity to share practice between depts within schools.
There are some regional courses but limited spaces.find internal cpd useful but not tailored specifically for my needs
Just throwing this out there... is there value in CPD when you are actually teaching?
Is that because similar type teachers attracted to same school?
Courses held in house more than offsite. Train the teachers to disseminate - team of 'experts'
I had a great day at centred around using iPads in the classroom! Inspiring day.
social media and blogging has allowed people to connect, share, debate and reflect
Yes! I think the internet has helped greatly here. https://t.co/ZD3PdYz3tx
Q1 Most teachers taking charge of own learning and CPD now.
Q2 again: Which events/courses/insets have had the most impact on your teaching over the past 12 months? https://t.co/38Nd1hNVWH
Many teachers therefore seeking own CPD. Uni courses MAs etc.
Q2. Doing Acrion Research project as part of DET. Reading about evidence into what works, finding new ideas and assessing impact.
as long as the 'experts' have ability to inspire!
Interesting that external spaces are limited. Supply>Demand? Not enough knowledgeable 'experts'?
partly to share knowledge of staff to others. Staff in schools are often very knowledgeable
Speed-dating activities and sharing practice either face to
face or online via twitter https://t.co/8drKxbkz7d
Q2 again: Which events/courses/insets have had the most impact on your teaching over the past 12 months? https://t.co/38Nd1hNVWH
It 'inspire' the most useful thing? What about classroom impact? Where's the balance?
I agree. But you said not many different opinions and I wonder why
Absolutely, we can learn so much from one another.
I've found twitter my best cpd this year.
If there willing to be receptive I think so especially as there is a wealth of free online CPD now as well
and they don't always. you'll always have some who take CPD seriously and seek it and some...
Going on a course needs to be the exception to CPD. Hence the term CLPL is better
Q2 - mostly teachmeets & events where I get to talk to other Ts who are in the classroom using ideas they talk about
just staff all working in same school share same experiences. Nice to see other perspectives
what are people's experiences of ?
Q3 What further training would you like for (a) yourself and (b) for your school/colleagues next year? https://t.co/Ii2xcaKKpq
Q2 the team were great. Much for us to think about following the sessions.
Interesting. I find talking to Ts from other depts gives diff views. Eg MFL vs PE
and experts often don't know the situation in individual schools
opt in generally gets the same audience - those who are proactive and love the opportunities
Q2: Outside providers = Rainbow Grammar. Have both really changed the way I think
Indeed. There should be more of a barter system of sharing CPD expertise at a distance to keep costs down.
Training in carrying out practice-based research as so great in improving own practice https://t.co/aqfN5yXkOR
Q3 What further training would you like for (a) yourself and (b) for your school/colleagues next year? https://t.co/Ii2xcaKKpq
Q2 We find anchoring discussions about classroom practice in a maths problem provided far richer discussions
Q1 LEA provided some excellent CPD, encouraged to share ideas, what worked well etc. Very useful for NQT
A2: an interactive live workshop on mental capacity and decision making delivered by
Do you think the same can be achieved between non-MAT schools?
Q3 again: What further training would you like for (a) yourself and (b) for your sch/colleagues next year? https://t.co/38Nd1hNVWH
TeachMeets usually inspire me the most to make a difference! Get to one if you haven't already 👍🏻 https://t.co/qGPshJHyOO
Q2 again: Which events/courses/insets have had the most impact on your teaching over the past 12 months? https://t.co/38Nd1hNVWH
Absolutely, our school used to be great at that before MAT
A3: writing outcomes for EHCPs. So much work to be done on this
Probably the whole teach meet movement that seems to have taken hold
Q2 Also some fantastic work from our EP regarding Attachment
Q2: Twitter has had an enormous impact on my CPD, massive change in technology for the better! Broadens teaching horizons.
Q3 - For me flipped learning & questioning techniques. School - Growth Mindset but we are getting that in Sept :)
Teachmeets, by teachers for teachers absolutely excellent CPD https://t.co/kZsl9NkhXA
Probably the whole teach meet movement that seems to have taken hold
Q2 as a trainee best for me was lots of short talks by internal staff on a CPD day. Bite sized chunks easier to put into practice
A3 more time spent with partners looking at ways to better support young people
Teechmeets are for those who have the confidence to share. There's a wealth of expertise
A2 Olevi outstanding teacher programme model is brilliant - "the knowledge is in the room approach" 😀
The opportunity to work in Kuwait. I learned a lot about autism practice, culture and similarities/differences
A3 Also think that more collab between schools and Unis is required for CPD on both sides
Attachment and its impact on children's learning is so important - great to hear this.
I don't know if there would be any milage in getting CPD on youtube ext
I try to offer CPD that is presented so that ppl can continue learning on their own - give tools https://t.co/XBW0BSX6VO
school: active engagement. For me, support/induction as a new head
more professional reading. It's something I'm starting to do but didn't do much at start of career
A4 I think teachers themselves need research and their practice in mini-talk and TM's within the school.
A4 Teachers need to take the responsibility for their own CPD. Schools need to make use of free expertise
Especially the ones that have been broadcaster over the internet
A4 Have Ts carry out own research and share with and train each other in school
I think it provides a very real opportunity.
loss of external courses due to a) funding and 2) not effective. Lots more internal CPD on offer which is great
A4 I think teachers themselves need research and share their practice in mini-talk and TM's within the school. *
You just need to give it a go I think
Fully agree, but need training in carrying t research
Q4 By sharing expertise and knowledge with each other through collaboration and partnership working.
Q4 Without schools investing in CPD much would be lost, essential to spend on developing teachers
Agree, but teachers need to be trained to do research.
A4 - Sharing practices, ideas & resources through internal teachmeets, also promoting online CPD such as Twitter.
Create more in house CPD opportunities
Absolutely - totally agree
internal CPD is fine if regulated/evaluated well. Sometimes can be a concern if leaders don't know what they don't know.
creating a good active network of schools/teachers to support.
I agree, but if I may ask why did you not do that? Time issues? Not knowing what?
win win situation! Best way to learn is to teach...
An investment in research skills CPD sessions? In the long run, cud pay off
all schools really need to embrace and embed the professional standard for CPD
This could also lead to more differentiated CPD for teachers. Workshops to choose from rather then dictated
Absolutely. I believe in that and try offering that too
I think most of us are guilt of this. I certainly should read more research papers.
i think i wasn't recommended texts and was so overwhelmed by job that it wasn't priority
by using all the amazing talent they already have! Our teachers are our best resource 😀
Make use of online opportunities teach meets. Twitter chats etc.
Also, Ts need time to carry out this research - shud be a block of time in their timetable each week
Q4 Empowering all staff to share what they do really well
More in terms of people management I think as when you go into leadership your just left to it
is certainly good for that!
Many investigations can be done within and with little extra time, but this needs experience or training
also makes it more bespoke as hopefully they know each other
& lots of benefit in just going to listen to what others have to say even if dont want to share yourself
Q5 Do schools use the talents and skills of their staff to develop other staff effectively? https://t.co/Ii2xcaKKpq
CPD on how students understand History praticises, interesting research how they view sources differently to teacher
Q4 Also if schools are hosting CPD to invite a few from other schools. The favour will be returned!
Yes, let technology help us to develop skills, plus it can then be done at different times. No posh lunches though!!
Well structure internal CPD which allows staff to opt into, and a mentoring scheme works well
Good schools pool good staff to lead CPD. Good schools also attract good staff which allows for more effective CPD
Yes, think the days of whole school CPD are perhaps over unless to address things like safeguarding. https://t.co/a37mCITc38
This could also lead to more differentiated CPD for teachers. Workshops to choose from rather then dictated
Would be good. Any legal issues if the research appears is paid-for journals?
A5: I think some schools do, it depends on management & staff
I think a bit of extra guidance along the way would have helped at times
Agreed. In your first hand experience...?
A5 Think this could be done much better, people need to be in the right place for this - on both sides.
Collaborate with other schools, joint prof learning can be huge if school leaders are on the same page https://t.co/33GNc29ZZ6
Ha. No! As long as I abide by citation rules, which I always do, then link to the full paper.
Q4 I think by teachers to sharing internally, but in small amounts. Maybe 1 hour kept free every 2 weeks for 2 or 3 Ts to share?
Q5 again: Do schools use the talents and skills of their staff to develop other staff effectively? https://t.co/38Nd1hNVWH
A5 - in some places yes but not in my experience.
Any suggestions about how ineffective schools can use talents more wisely?
Difficult with in house CPD of often persuading the teachers they can lead session
Yes. I put myself out to help others with PPTs (back in 2000) suddenly I was ICT trainer? :-)
Q5 Huge amount of talent to be found amongst every member of staff. NQTs to SMTs can all bring skills to share.
A5 I feel that sometimes teachers are merely surviving and that self guided CPD is a step too far for them
I think someone needs to start eg say about twitter, someone else may then put their stuff out
I think in these times of tight belts most try. Hence the Inhouse expert bank we try to train.
Peer observation - Ts can learn from each other by watching what others do
definitely, TAs too. At the Special Sch I'm at TAs out number Ts and have a huge wealth of knowledge to share 1/2
Q5; depends on ethos of school and how prepared teachers are to share ideas. Good schools will always use talents and skills.
Is watching enough? What about team teaching? Asking questions? What about those peeps who hate obs?
We flip all our sessions and ensure staff watch a video 24/48hrs prior to attending. All resources online https://t.co/VnMRzP56qy
I have been promoting twitter as CPD at my school this past year but many are still very resistant
A6 Technology is a must. Look how we are connecting tonight
but I think all staff need to be empowered and have the right opportunities to share 2/2
Totally agree, TA's have a wealth of knowledge to share.
I find teachmeet etc. Are good for this.
Don't give up! Change takes time. Just keep at it! https://t.co/m5e7UfAiJj
I have been promoting twitter as CPD at my school this past year but many are still very resistant
What is the source of that resistance?
I have learned a lot from observing others. Team teaching is great&cross curricular collaboration is also a effective
a4 we book training and share it with other schools. Also build on existing team strengths and read as much as poss!
Q6 videoing can help share more and take away the pressure of being observed
Yes, again good schools will foster a culture of sharing and improving, we can all learn from one another.
Far too few schools flip their CPD at the organisational level. Some tchrs do it for themselves by reading up on topic.
I've found his too. I guess you can lead a horse to water etc but can be frustrating
Q6: Technology has potential to revolutionise CPD, onTwitter we share ideas and experience from all over the world.
Technology is important but experience is vital. Learn from those that have been there and done it.
a5 some do, some don't. Depends on so many factors such as ethos, types of leadership etc
A6 Ts can create flipped videos for their peers to learn from, & even create them together. Also online courses cud b great
Agree! https://t.co/QoUjkCUg3E
Far too few schools flip their CPD at the organisational level. Some tchrs do it for themselves by reading up on topic.
It's had a real impact on our professional development and changed the whole culture of professional learning
The 'I can't do Tech' is the new 'I can't do Maths'! 😧
q5. Moving more in that direction with development of TLA department.
My 2nd book was written partly to convey an innovative approach to learning, education & CPD https://t.co/v8IiywxwqW
I think that is a big thing for some.
Q6 Started using Storyline 2 and Articulate to develop e resources, then flip the classroom before the actual sesison .
For us videos are opportunity to share in between formal training too
Yes, agreed. We have just undergone exercise in observing each other's lessons. Interesting and helpful. https://t.co/hnEb7TM5g3
I have learned a lot from observing others. Team teaching is great&cross curricular collaboration is also a effective
It is, and will be - until they take steps to make it not be a big thing.
Q6 Webinars can help get a wider audience, most I have done have been audio only, but including video to these seems next step
If schools had been using TQM for the last 25 years the CPD would be radically different & more effective https://t.co/7U3MArFKOs
I did a Tech wksp in Jan INSET & I told every grp that I was not a tech-head but I like to play around
I believe lots of CPD opportunities will come from teachers going alone offer their experience https://t.co/qYg5gG9iq3
A7 More online, more e-communities, teacher driven with responsibility on the individual
Have to agree!! This is the way we teach ;-) https://t.co/YR021E30lk
Q6 Webinars can help get a wider audience, most I have done have been audio only, but including video to these seems next step
Any tips for how to 'encourage' the reluctant to engaged meaningfully?
did they believe you? I find simple tools make presentations look so slick they still assume it's hard
If done well, it's great, but many flippers and videos not that great...
Why isn't improving health & effectiveness central to CPD-how many staff are aware of these symptoms? https://t.co/nYCQODUW6Q
hopefully more on the style of Twitter: a focus, key Qs, positive debate and sharing of great ideas
Q7 Think we will be able to tailor make our own CPD in future to meet our training needs.
A7 More research, online learning &sharing, collaboration.Ppl will bcome more open2sharing& letting others observe.CPD will b varied
I once did a training session from scratch. I made the presentation with them about their own course
many schools do that nowadays, but only on school level, not really done as a govt policy
Having a resource isn't enough. One must find the right resource.
future of professional learning should embrace recommendations from workload publications. Schools to be more flexible with time
Can be an issue but I think as technology improves so will videos.
some did, when I got them to have a go with the tools i was suggesting they realised how simple they were
Agree and this shows how far CPD has come during my teaching career! https://t.co/Qm8RL3rvKX
A7 More research, online learning &sharing, collaboration.Ppl will bcome more open2sharing& letting others observe.CPD will b varied
Also feel lots of school will do more online CPD and more division based CPD
It's not about the quality of the video but the content
I think the main thing was to give them chance to actually have a go rather then just be talked at
Only recently has CPD shown the importance of GROWTH MINDSETS-why so late? Locus of control been ignored https://t.co/f3tAOM5RLU
I like that idea. Thanks!
Many topics are not suitable for public space, like Twitter. What platforms/method would you suggest to protect data etc?
Also feel lots of school will do more online CPD and there will be a rise in discussion based CPD models.
All our lessons are live, using real teachers, never videos.
Quality is paramount, agreed.
Schools most important resource is the staff yet CPD for them is still really a token gesture https://t.co/AAhF7AXwUE
I don't think you have to use a public domain or even ICT but use the structure of things like UKedchat in small groups
No I know, I meant for staff sharing I think that videoing will become less of an event and more of a norm
it was hour, with around 25 T's. I showed plickers, memrise and class blogs. they then got to play around
hopeful using innovate "progressive" ideas implemented to get "traditional" outcomes. Rather than present dichotomy.
I meant for sharing with and webinars for teachers not student learning.
A8 Most inspirational CPD for me was . Excellent experience shared with pupils and partners
This quote provides a key objective for CPD- DEVELOP & MEASURE to skills of staff (especially the 8skills) https://t.co/iEhU479tHv
Mentioned before, but staff once spent whole staffmeeting discussing correct formation of the letter 'F' https://t.co/YaDId4fgn3
Yes, indeed but using similar technology we could collaborate as teachers, could be really powerful.
Olevi day: Active Engagement. range of things on a table to turn into creative resource - some became rather rude!!
If CPD was transformed it would change the culture of education improve health reduce the teacher shortage https://t.co/N634T3EU9m
Q8 As a fairly young teacher I heard Prof Tim Brighouse speak at CPD event, it was inspirational.
1/2 I had success demoing and to a group of 15 for 1hr. Was nice and informal.
2/2 50+ I'd have probably backed out of getting them up and involved
