It's time! The chat is set to begin. and I will be your hosts and we're looking forward to your thoughts. Let's roll....
Good Evening, and welcome to !
Tonight we'll be talking RTI/MTSS, culture, & PLCs. Looking forward to your thoughts on the chat. Who's with us tonight?
Happy to join the chat from a very soggy Houston
Our first question concerns student DNA (not that kind!): their Desires, Needs, & Assets. How do you uncover these?
Excited to connect with ... wondering if all the are watching the tonight?
Thanks for joining Paula! Sunny and warm on the west coast...
You just mentioned the Sig 72 which was inherent to me when I taught. Get to know kids they'll tell you what they need
Kids are always surprised when you give a student interest inventory and actually make changes based on what they share!
Hi Daniel .. thanks for joining us!
Hello! Amber in OK. Not watching NBA since my Thunder are out :( 7th English/Lit.
Hello! Chris Tucker, assistant principal in Indiana.
That could be the case. It's possible to do both. Jump on PLN!
That's an important 1st step! Relationships, if you build them, they will learn!
Set aside 3 days during the 1st wk of school and have a 5-min talk with every S. Ask meaningful questions that will uncover their DNA
A1: Relationships! Ask questions, share & honor perspectives, help Ss set goals and action steps and celebrate what's going well
Hello! Juliet in SC. Looking forward to a great chat.
Hi Amber. Thanks for joining and we're still partial to the Thunder in the Pacific Northwest!
and I bet the responses are awesome! Great strategy.
Thanks Juliet. I'm certain you'll make it just that!
Love this! https://t.co/MqhkBNYl2K

Thanks for joining Chris. Looking forward to your thoughts.
Paula do you have some great questions to share with us?
Absolutely, Paula ... without relationships, we have nothing to build on!
Q2 Effective RTI begins in Tier 1 so how do you assess the fidelity and efficacy of your Research-Based Instruction?
Love asking Ss about pet peeves, what they r great at and what they want to be better at. Great convos can start there
Hi all, jumping in a bit late.
A2: Fidelity is a concept that most Ts with whom I work don't understand... hard to assess it if you don't know what it is.
Awesome! I ask "what do you need to be comfortable and successful here?" https://t.co/IZQ97xYzgi

Thanks for joining us. Jump right in with an answer to Q2!
A2 I still feel lost with RTI, but collecting and analyzing the right data helps me eval results
Welcome, Angela! Have you ever taught it, but they just didn't get it? How do we measure the effectiveness of our instruction?
I often convened a community circle on day 2 of class and asked what they had liked best about previous ELA classes.
YESSSS!!!! https://t.co/QhYNJZpxe4
I often convened a community circle on day 2 of class and asked what they had liked best about previous ELA classes.
A2: Constant feedback, conferring w/Ss, quick formative assmt often to help drive my practice
Everything we do is driven by evidence as we aim for ALL Ss to succeed
A2: Using formative assessment helps quickly assess whether RTI measures are working and what improvements have been made.
Better late than never - a beautiful night in Minnesota, Jim Smith, Assessment and Data.
Yep! I teach Ts exactly how to use a strategy, then observe, and they don't do it right. Thus... more support.
Sometimes I wonder if maybe a practice just didn't work because I needed to be better at it?
And day 3 could be what they liked least - as long as no T names were used.
Yes! The best lesson one year may fall flat the next. Responding to info means we use the evidence correctly.
OK, so how do we know when they just aren't getting it? Some of your ideas for assessing proficiency? https://t.co/KP7U2Ko1uN
Hi Jim ... thanks for joining!
Aren't they all beautiful there? Thanks for jumping in.
Assess researchbased instruction on its results. Just like we would expect our sci S to assess their research by doing an experiment.
or the audience changed. Context matters.
A2 Assessment calibrated and scaffolded to the instruction. Intentional assessment construction critical.
Our teachers use to do item analysis and eval the strength of the CFA
best advice I got from mentor T was don't recycle plans bc we don't recycle Ss. And that was groundbreaking 20 years ago!
So much wisdom here! https://t.co/LNZgXKzrDk

The mark of a master teacher is that they know what to do, when to do it, and with whom. If only that were as simple as it sounds!
A3: Be really clear on success criteria & then provide multiple oppts and formats for Ss to show mastery with depth
So many of our "best practices" really are rooted in common sense. Another great share.
Great point, Daniel! You can draw some really bad conclusions from a weak assessment!
We've got to stop using data as a hammer (rank/sort) and start using data as a flashlight (convert to evidence)
But let's not take common sense for granted. Speak what is on your mind! It makes us better!!! https://t.co/oFjwbQKvl6
So many of our "best practices" really are rooted in common sense. Another great share.
Good teaching is as old as Socrates. Good common sense methods have been around a long time! We just forget.
The old adage "common sense is not always common practice" comes to mind.
Great metaphor! He's a genius with quotes and metaphors!!! is the man! https://t.co/8Fr1P4rokW

Socratic method ... time tested and true https://t.co/cFeZ6VC8In
Good teaching is as old as Socrates. Good common sense methods have been around a long time! We just forget.
That's right! Good questioning never goes out of style.
We taught it, then assessed it with an assessment we trust, and the data says ... not so much. Now what? https://t.co/tFPqSUwwLI
Is in the house? No lurking, jump on in my friend!
A4 be humble and realize it's back to the drawing board. Leverage the creativity found in your PLC
A3: A balanced assessment system focusing on student investment. Strong base on formative use of assessment.
A4: What happens next should be innovation - not just reteaching or what I call "louder and slower."
You must change the plans https://t.co/NexLj7Bgkw
A4: What happens next should be innovation - not just reteaching or what I call "louder and slower."
Exactly! Collaborate - to better innovate!
Right back to the DNA! Thanks Danny!
Commitments are SO important, aren't they?
And thus, you must change YOURSELF. Often hard for folks. But essential.
Easiest done in community and NOT in isolation ... power of the PLC
I love it when a group of teachers teach something, and then get together to ask "How come your kids got it? What did you do?"
A4: Ts AND Ss. Ts at the ready to build capacity and Ss setting goals & constantly measuring their own success
The commitments really come into play when the students do not seem likable. https://t.co/NtUJti1cLp
Commitments are SO important, aren't they?
Sorry about the question - used it in another chat.
Agreed. I could never think of as many options alone as I could w a team.
Tom just taught me that Ss that challenge us the most NEED us the most
Friend of mine used to say "The kids who most need you to like them are often the hardest to like.
The best teachers define their own success by the success of their students.
Yes, Assessment should always indicate clear evidence of levels of learning. https://t.co/8R2Bam6o24
We've got to stop using data as a hammer (rank/sort) and start using data as a flashlight (convert to evidence)
'data-driven' hammer doesn't support long term instruc. change. Data-informed collab discussions do https://t.co/CUfMKaiwHo
We've got to stop using data as a hammer (rank/sort) and start using data as a flashlight (convert to evidence)
And are often the ones who teach us how to be better with such reward
And often the kids who drive you crazy during the day don't want to leave when school is finished.
lol. Hi Tom, aka international game changer.
A5 It's invaluable to empower your people to take on the challenges presented and learn from their mistakes. Experts in the making
Hate to sound like but BAMMM data can inform but a culture of learning is what drives us. https://t.co/wAr2pobjC1

One of the most important things a principal can do is help teachers feel secure. Only secure teachers ask! https://t.co/O7m8rhvG3A
I love it when a group of teachers teach something, and then get together to ask "How come your kids got it? What did you do?"
A5: I refer to my PLN /TEAM of experts all day long. I am able to handle more bc of the experts I collaborate with
Yaasss! It's not an invitation. It is an EXPECTATION.
"Experts in the Making' ... I like that! We are as smart as our network...
Thanks Nicole. I like to excel at knowing what I don't know.
A5: Right before you hit the wall, ask. Your PLN doesn't want to see you crash, but it's not their job to babysit.
Colab is the only way we will ever close gaps. And strong assessment tools making learning visible.
A5: When you've exhausted your tool kit and still don't have results, ask for help.
Great to be on the same chat with you Rosa.
Often we discover that the answers were lurking in our network all along, but we hadn't yet asked the right question!
A5: I like 2believe that the experts r in the room. Our lrning community is constantly learning/analyzing/assessing/growing as a team
bam! Hello, Jim. Some of my favorite tweeps are here tonight!
"All of us are smarter than Any of us." Sometimes, we can't see the answer because it's too obvious; fresh eyes help!
A6: Gotta be systemic: time to confer, small group instr, flex grouping & S goal setting/ data tracking all a part of structure
A6: Since we can't "create time," it comes down to choices and priorities. Identify time fillers that are actually negotiable.
A6 you find time for what's most important. Another Q ... What's is your priority? How can you not find the time? It's there
A6: Practice this! The more we carve out time 2 intervene, the better we'll be at it. Erase "I just didn't have time" from our vocab.
Love this systematic and intentional, for all learners. https://t.co/rfETK31qgF
A6: Gotta be systemic: time to confer, small group instr, flex grouping & S goal setting/ data tracking all a part of structure
School is still on in Alberta - people are in that 'Last-minute-no-time' mindset ... we had lots of time in February.
I agree that fresh/outside eyes are sometimes very helpful. They either create dissonance or affirm.
Ok, I'll go ahead and quote Ken, too, "What you focus on grows" https://t.co/AbacfRjUOE
A6 you find time for what's most important. Another Q ... What's is your priority? How can you not find the time? It's there
It's about making time not finding time
A7 we "Accelerate" those Ss. DAta we get from CFAs via helps us intervene/accelerate in real time
yes.Experts include district colleagues/teacher leaders. Fresh eyes & transparency are invaluable when we've hit a wall
A7: They are learning. Always engaged in learning. Every child. All the time. Every day.
G2G ... Thanks for hosting . Appreciate it!
A7: Extension thru service lrng/ outreach, PBL, class websites, book clubs, exploration, etc. Connected & meaningful & engaging
Good comment, Daniel - RTI time has to be valuable for them, also
thanks for extending the dialogue
Ah, time flies ... I'm going to jump ahead, because I really want to hear from you on this one: https://t.co/XY21wCIDDO
