#DITCHbook was created by Ditch That Textbook author Matt Miller. The chat focuses on innovative teaching ideas and disrupting standard textbook education.
Welcome to tonight's #DitchBook chat!
We'll talk about some of the BIG ideas from the first four #DitchSummit presentations. More info at https://t.co/MwjUJDagZS.
Please check in. Glad you're here!
A1: My favorite way to integrate tech is by helping ALL students find that they are creative! We just have to make sure that we help them find their groove for it. #ditchbook
A1. I love showing Ss they have a global audience. The world is in their pocket. I have them share their thinking @Flipgrid@padlet google tools, @Twitter and we share to the universe. #ditchbook
A1. I love how tech gives the quiet students a chance and opportunity to voice their opinions! Thank you @padlet. I also love that I can give my students a choice on how they show us what they have learned and how they learn it! #ditchbook
Q1: What are your favorite ways to use these to integrate tech:
Making thinking visible
Student voice
Sharing work
#DitchSummit@tanyaavrith@hollyclarkedu
A1: Keeping student voice at the forefront of planning ensures that any tech integration will be for the right reasons - not just for the sake of using tech! #DitchBook
A1 OneNote, Flipgrid, & Microsoft Teams These tools are helping our students make tremendous progress when it comes to sharing their thinking, voice, and work. #DitchBook

A1: Loving @Seesaw! I think it ups the game in student voice. I notice my camp kiddos were completely authentic when they were able to do a daily log about what they experienced that day! There were days I got 2 videos out of them #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A1: Keeping student voice at the forefront to ensure EVERY student has an opportunity to share their thoughts. @Flipgrid is easily the best tool for this! #ditchbook
A1. Giving students a voice is important to me. Now even the shy quite kids in the room can express themselves. They want to but are scared. @flipgrid has been a godsend! #ditchbook
#DitchBook A1) I might be a bit out of date, but I love using Google Docs to collaborate and share student voices. I'm also looking for more ways to integrate #flipgrid for this purpose.
A1 To me Student Voice (hearing from every student in the room) is one of the most powerful ways to use tech to engage the whole class instead of just the extroverts #DitchBook
A2. I think the word digital should be removed. It should be literacy and fluency and how we integrate different tools will help Ss be future ready. They need to be literate and fluent in all things #DitchBook
A2: I think we talk so much about Digital Literacy and not enough about Fluency. Kids come to us digitally literate we need to teach them the fluency that helps them use technology to learn #DitchBook
A2: As we improve our tech use in classrooms, students won't have to think about the tech. It will be transparent: a natural outgrowth of learning.
We need to keep working toward that goal! #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2. Being able to use technology and being able to use technology to learn and teach are totally different. Working really hard on the second now! #ditchbook
Digital fluency is really a new term today... I like the idea, though as apps get more sophisticated, it gets a lot easier to get to this stage... #ditchbook
Q2: It was a WOW moment with me that I shared with my coworkers & my computer science degree son. I have said for years now that we need to move our kids to meaningful uses of the tech we hand them. Now I have terms for that thought! #DitchBook#DitchSummit
We have to show our students to embrace the power of tech! How can we do this? By modeling a growth-mindset. Change up how we teach. Students need to be fluent in using these tech skills for college and career readiness. #ditchbook
A2: It's nice that Ss can use the tools I want them too. It's AWESOME when they come up with new ways to use it or to demonstrate their learning. When they can innovate or elevate,WIN. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2: Today’s Ss have digital literacy (aka tech comfy), however as Ts we need to get our Ss to a point where they have tech fluency. Technology is merely a tool but in the hands of great Ts it can be transformational. #ditchbook#DitchSummit
A2 We know Ss are literate when we curate the right selection of tools for them they become fluent overtime. I guide them towards the tools then step back and let them work #DitchSummit
A2. Being able to use technology and being able to use technology to learn and teach are totally different. Working really hard on the second now! #ditchbook
A2: Digital literacy in my mind indicates a user's ability to not only operate digital tools, but to use them well for their intended purpose. #ditchbook
Yes! Some students prefer post-it's and vocal. Others love padlet and flipgrid. Give them options to collaborate wherever they feel the most comfortable. #ditchbook
A2: My middle school students are digitally dependent, starting to become digitally literate, but so far from fluent. I’d love to get them to be creators, not just consumers. #DitchBook
A2: digital literacy and digital fluency -- we need a balance. Just as we need to balance time to deliver/practice content and time to create using the knowledge we acquire. #DitchBook
A2 We know Ss are literate when. we curate the right selection of tools for them they become fluent overtime. I guide them towards the tools then step back and let them work #DitchBook
Q3: Eighty percent of our thoughts in a day can be negative -- and they run on repeat!
How can we help students break that cycle and thrive?
#DitchBook#DitchSummit@strobeled@happystrobel
A3: Teach them to take the negativity, learn from it, and QUICKLY move forward. No need to dwell! Easy to teach this w/ science labs, since we often "fail" the first time or two! #DitchBook
A3: By offering them an environment that is set up to help them succeed! A place where second chances are given and encouragement is the norm. #ditchbook
Q3: Eighty percent of our thoughts in a day can be negative -- and they run on repeat!
How can we help students break that cycle and thrive?
#DitchBook#DitchSummit@strobeled@happystrobel
Thanks! It's taken some pep talks and support, but it's so neat to see kids take this on! I want to challenge or current TAs to make some more! #ditchbook
A3. Be honest with them. And share messages of positivity. I have a wall of wisdom (aka quotes) that run the perimeter of the front of the room. I also have Ss reflect each morning on something in their detective logs #DitchBook
A3: I love @strobeled's suggestion in her #DitchSummit presentation:
Find a word, phrase, mantra to repeat to remind yourself of who you are and what you strive to be!
#DitchBook
Q3: Eighty percent of our thoughts in a day can be negative -- and they run on repeat!

#DitchBook#DitchSummit@strobeled@happystrobel
A1: I love using Flipgrid to give students a voice in my class. We also use G-suite, particularly Slides to make our learning visible. Kahoot, Nearpod and EdPuzzle are other favorites. #ditchbook
A3: Teach them to take the negativity, learn from it, and QUICKLY move forward. No need to dwell! Easy to teach this w/ science labs, since we often "fail" the first time or two! #DitchBook
A2: In our bldg. we are exploring a scope and sequence for digital fluency, i.e. in K-use x, y platforms (@Seesaw, @Classkick, @Bookcreator) , 1st grade add Slides, Adobe Spark, expand portfolio knowledge, ...3rd grade transition Canvas LMS ...#ditchbook
A2 Ss will only have time to develop fluency when Ts are fluent in integrating tech for pedagogically sound reasons & do not see it as add-on/one more thing #DitchBook
Q3: I try to be very mindful of the little fantastic moments I see and verbalize it often. Really changes the ebb & flow of a room when they know it's a positive workspace. I noticed the more positive I was, they were too! #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3: Focus on the positives! Too often Ss hear negatives and don’t realize that there are positives. We need to fill their lives with joy and happiness. #ditchbook
A3. S's are faced with enough negativity. Yes we must provide guidence and correction and if we think about it we overdo the correction part. ALWAYS TRY TO FIND SOMETHING POSITIVE! And send them out the door with a smile. #ditchbook
A3: I loved doing StrengthsExplorer curriculum with my students, and we refer to it regularly the rest of the year. Focus on harnessing strengths, not just fixing weaknesses. #DitchBook
#DitchBook I speak with my liw income, urban Ss about this daily. We try to "leave it" in the hall, bring nothing but our best, and know it is okay to have an off day. Positive mindset is so important for success.
A3: I have to say I am struggling with this for 1 S. He not only has negative self-talk, but he writes notes to himself, too. I have been trying to turn those into positive messages instead. #ditchbook
A4: By taking notice of the small things in life. Whenever you notice that someone is rocking it, tell them. It may take a few seconds of your day to tell them, but it could change the life/outlook of the person you're talking to. #ditchbook
A3 Build a safe, positive culture where students are comfortable taking risks. I think taking risks then failing & succeeding is a great way to build perseverance. Through perseverance, positivity. #DitchBook
In reply to
@jmattmiller, @strobeled, @HappyStrobel
A4: I received an @ErinCondren gratitude journal and started using it after I watched @strobeled and her science of happiness. It really does make me focus on the little things! #ditchbook
A4: Post it notes! Grab a stack of sticky notes. Write why you're grateful for students, colleagues, etc.
Spread those sticky notes everywhere until the stack disappears.
#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A4: I spend a few minutes alone each morning, either at home or in my classroom, with my coffee. Start my day with self-care so that I can spend the rest of it caring for others. #DitchBook
A4 I try each week to leave our teachers a couple of sticky notes telling them something they have done well or just thanking them. I had them so it’s kind of a game! #DitchBook
#ditchbook My favorite part has been the plethora if resources and new folks to follow on Twitter. Love all of the info I'm getting. Thanks, all! @jmattmiller
A3 #DitchBook For World Language, we provide our sts w/functional & comprensible chunks & sentenece starters so they feel empowered & capable to use the language for communication.
A4: Keep a gratitude journal, (hey make sketchnote your gratitude) post it in the classroom and make sure each child is listed and WHY! Invite Ss to do the same -- make a wall of gratitude! Hmmm, great way to start 2018 #ditchbook
A4: I always greet and thank each student for coming to class at the door and celebrate the positives. For my colleagues, I leave little notes in their mailboxes I let them know I appreciate them. A small thank you and a smile goes a long way. #ditchbook
A4: Since what we speak, do and believe are interconnected, then finding ways to be grateful daily will infuse what we say, do, and believe. Love doing #GratitudeSnaps and had 2 classes in the last challenge! #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A4: simply by saying thank you! A sincere verbalization of your gratitude impacts you just as much as it impacts the person you’re thanking. #ditchbook
My favorite part of "Where Technology and Pedagogy Collide" was beginning with the end in mind. Getting back to this idea has been invaluable in my planning this week. #DitchSummit#ditchbook
Q4: It's funny how @strobeled talked about her gratitude journal. Few yrs ago I started and noticed I was seeking things within my students and my room. Was a gamer changer for me. Approached the day differently! #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A4 #DitchBook Is that gratitude from the teacher or learner perspective? As a teacher, I am grateful that I am allowed to develop our curriculum based on student interest & global curriculum.
