Thanks for joining tonight as we talk about . Please introduce yourself and your role in education.
-
-
Jimmy here from Stamford. Excited to learn about .
-
Hi Catie! So glad you can join us!
-
I'm Alexa, an Elementary Technology Leader in Danbury, CT, and your moderator for tonight's chat!
-
Hello everyone Sean Hutchinson 4th grade teacher from Stamford
-
Hi! Ruth, English dept chair in Canton. Ready to learn!
-
Hi! Maura from New Fairfield - 6th grade ELA/sped teacher.
-
Hi Ruth! Hi Maura! Nice to see you!
-
Hey Catie glad you are joining us this evening
-
Hi, Sean! Hope all is well!
-
Good evening! Dan, Instructional Coach in Derby, CT
-
Q1 will be coming up in just a minute.
-
Thanks! Glad to be here during spring break!
-
Hey all Joel from New Fairfield Middle School.
-
Maura! All is going well. Thanks for asking. How are you doing?
-
Q1: What is (universal design for learning)?
-
What's up neighbor? Good to see you here.
-
Good to see you this evening Dan. I am looking forward to this chat. How are you doing?
-
And no worries if you don't know. Tonight is all about learning!
-
-
I have no idea. Super surface level understanding here.
-
-
A1: is an educational framework & set of principles that focuses on maximizing learning for ALL participants.
-
A1: In my mind, UDL is when teachers minimize barriers for Ss and maximize learning for all Ss.
-
doing well, guys. Long day today but wanted to stop in to chat!
-
Q1a: How is different from differentiated instruction or assistive technology? (I know...tough in 140 characters!)
-
A1: I'm not a UDL expert but my understanding is that it's all about choices and making learning available to all.
-
I like this definition, a lot. But how is this different from what good teachers are doing?
-
A1: UDL is not as "simple" as it seems. When you are 6th grade and Ss are on K level...it's a challenge.
-
A1 I believe it works with creating ideas for assessment/instruction that can be adapted for all students; that's all I've got!
-
can it just be called good teaching? Serious question, but quick reading seems like it is.
-
Really it's not...one of the politically correct tags, I guess. It is all about what's right for all learners.
-
Popping in for a bit to support my people - AJ 7/8 Social Studies teacher from New Jersey. What's on tap tonight?
-
Maura you bring up an interesting point. What are the limits of differentiation?
-
A1a: AT focuses on students with special needs while UDL is for EVERY learner.
-
-
Amy from Wilton High school joining in.
-
Was kind of thinking the same thing.
-
thanks for joining tonight.
-
A1a: big diff between udl and diff instruction is modification: no need to modify with UDL. You aren't starting with ONE baseline
-
Hi Amy thanks for joining us this evening
-
Q1a: The difference in my opinion is UDL gives S more ways 2demonstrate their learning in ways that fit their needs no tech required
-
Jimmy, it can totally be good teaching, but UDL has research-steeped guidelines that help you focus on how to reach that
-
can you point me in the direction of this research? I'd love to learn more.
-
I wonder if there has to be some parameters around the amount of differentiation
-
hey Amy! We met at a Google conference. How's that brother of yours like his new job?
-
-
-
For those of you who are new to UDL, the UDL Guidelines can be found here: https://t.co/F8Iu82kaHA Q2 will relate to them!
-
A1: All I know is regardless of T struggle to meet all learners' needs, the smile on faces when they "get" it is priceless.
-
For those of you who are new to UDL, the UDL Guidelines can be found here: https://t.co/cJ8z4S7OpU Q2 will relate to them!
-
Hey Amy! Nice to see you!
-
Basically prior planning leads to positive outcomes that matches choices w/individual learners.
-
One thing I want to point out: You don't need tech for UDL.
-
-
Q2: What tool do you find to be most useful in the classroom? Which guideline(s) can it be used for and how?
-
I am noticing that as well.
-
I live for the day that S needs come before the schedule. Just sayin'.
-
-
There is a lot of good information that has been shared. I am trying to read and chat at the same time! Yikes! Brain overload!!!!
-
A2: One tool I like, albeit tech, is (Checkpoint 5.1 Use multiple media for communication)
-
-
A2: I love using for just about everything. So helpful for Language, Comprehension. Action and Expression: Communication
-
A2: Another one is (Checkpoint 5.1 Use multiple media for communication)
-
The best tool has always been TTS (text to speech) for Ss of all ability levels.
-
-
-
Same! Trying to process the principles and think about application. Any examples of how they've adopted? https://t.co/8zTL1wHdDk
-
-
There is a lot of good information that has been shared. I am trying to read and chat at the same time! Yikes! Brain overload!!!!
-
I also love, love Read&Write for Google Chrome. The visual dictionary, text to speech, so many tools in one!
-
Great topic... Something that should be incorporated more into schools -IMO - had to focus on this for a class last yr
-
I noticed that we can use UDL as lens to evaluate our instruction, materials, assessments, etc. This could be a great PD Start now?
-
-
-
-
Sounds like a great session for !!
-
Would love to hear more, A.J. How are you using it now?
-
Where are people starting with UDL? Or how are they using it?
-
Totally! Except 50 minutes....I couldn't do it. I would need more time.
-
-
I started in a grad school course and I'm obsessed. It just makes so.much.sense.
-
I vote for DOUBLE session!!
-
-
Q3: How do we incorporate UDL guidelines with state testing mandates? (Tricky question here)
-
-
What does UDL look like in terms of organization in the classroom and student choice/independence?
-
hi Ruth! Nice to see you here. Sethy is liking the new job a lot but missing his old friends.
-
A3: A big part of UDL is multiple means of expression (ie: choice of how to express knowledge). Total opposite of state testing.
-
I think we all use it to differently to help differentiate. All the tools that we incorporate is our
-
A3: Standardized testing = hit on Checkpoint 2.1 "Clarify vocabulary and symbols" to target tricky words in complex texts/test q's
-
A3: It seems to be that the authors of SBAC know nothing of UDL...otherwise, this test would not exist!
-
It is ALL about choice and voice! Multiples means of expression. Students choose how to show what the know
-
A3: I am not sure if they work well together but assessments if not structured well inherently create stopping points for learning.
-
love this idea! Collaboration with you would rock
-
I'm in...much to my shy self saying no!
-
Hello just decompressing from event this afternoon but is so important to embrace all learners
-
A3: So instead of a TEST, Ss could chose to sing instead, or podcast, or a painting. Who says knowledge needs to be shown thru a TEST
-
A3: I think standards can still be connected to the learning even if students who what they know in different ways.
-
A3: Unfortunately all we do during the year to make learning unique and give sts a learning experience is taken away by state tests.
-
Totally. Standards can be connected to anything. It just makes data collection a little trickier.
-
This is the answer! https://t.co/Sy9I5ORx1d
-
-
A3: So instead of a TEST, Ss could chose to sing instead, or podcast, or a painting. Who says knowledge needs to be shown thru a TEST
-
-
A3: I think standards can still be connected to learning w/S showing what they know in different ways.
-
So last unscheduled Q: What is the responsibility at the district level to teach/train Ts about UDL?
-
A3: we give them choices while learning together, while State tests are to group sts and try to break teachers.
-
Just had convos today re how to address need to have multiple choice question practice when trying to work w choices in assessments
-
It is SO imperative for PD on the topic of UDL...especially seeing admin is always looking for it!
-
I think this is where collaboration comes into play. This is not a skill to train, but something to share and learn
-
-
I think districts should be responsible for injecting this topic into their PD. In addition, Ts should be seeking this out as well
-
A3: State testing mandates could Bmade less arduous if UDL research and design were a focus for school districts for the good of all.
-
There definitely needs to be a convo...so many Ts are still in the stone age.
-
-
I think that at a district level, there needs to be a convo about UDL. It isn't a trend. It isn't going away.
-
I think we need to rethink the purpose and point of assessment. We are trying to measure Ss learning and progress. It goes way beyond
-
I guess, unless I'm misunderstanding what the deal w/ UDL is. I feel it's how we differentiate for our Sts
-
I don't think it is the stone age; I think it is just so many Ts are overloaded. We need top down direction on this!
-
Joining late tonight but have already learned so much about#udl. How does it compare to personalized learning?
-
A4: Should be embedded part of PD. I was also invited to attend weeklong seminar at Harvard this summer on UDL.
-
I agree but UDL seems to offer a common framework/language that can move Ts out of their silos
-
It doesn't have to be top down. I think it can be the responsibility of Teacher Leaders to show new methods
-
I think it's a combo of the two...we have stone age in our school!
-
-
Thats great. I'd love to hear what you come back with.
-
That's the biggest part of it, showing what works and getting people to take steps/risks.
-
I like the idea of common language. As we know, another acronym might scare the herd.
-
-
that's the key. That's where the shift starts, AJ.
-
You're right. It can always be up to the T!
-
just joining. Great tweets up until now! Thanks for the "invite"
-
-
A4: UDL shouldB a priority 4school districts bc it provides students w/a framework to build their learning based on their needs.
-
I still think we are all who need to push that shift. We need to show what's possible!
-
Well, , we are normally just a 30 min chat so our time is up, but we can certainly keep the convo going!
-
Challenge Accepted??? Who's with me? We are the shift, we are the change agents. Let's Go! https://t.co/92siIfj8OF
-
-
hate to beat the "Mindset" idea, but it's so true. We know that. Creating a shift if the challenge.
-
I'm attending a UDL PD at Harvard this summer. I know very little, but am REALLY looking forward to it. I agree with the assmt. piece
-
I'm curious if I can piggy back on that. Is this an invite only thing?
-
If anyone wants to join in with at 9:00, we'll be talking writing workshop!
-
Completely agree. There should be a 094 certificate for teacher leaders or something? Maybe?
-
-
TY everyone. I have my work cut out for me, but I know is with me so we can work together! I have2go 2yr old nephew
-
has a positive impact on my teaching. Learning fromPeople that are striving to make teaching great https://t.co/C9aMOH6Ejg
-
-
You know I'm down man! It's a deep rooted passion to help teachers create new learning experiences for kids.
-
Thanks for giving me something new to research!
-
If you have any opportunity to take a course w/ Dr. Anya Evmenova at George Mason, she is amazing. She's totally turned me on to UDL
-
Ha, thanks. The diff between the town I live in and the one in which I work.
-
-
This was a great chat! Looking forward to learning more with all of you in the future about
-
That's actually a great idea. Do they have a cert for specializing in curr/inst?
-
Thank you so much for joining tonight!!
-
Thanks for hosting! Great to see such fervor around great causes!
-
Alexa, great chat this evening. . I have a lot to think about?
-
Thank you, ! Great convo...to be continued!
