Liz, Director of Curriculum and Innovation at Rolling Hills! Happy to be here as we are creating on our second 21st Century grant program and making it STEAM based! #AppleEDUchat
A1 a couple years ago I had a small STEM club. Did mini challenge lessons in my class last year but want to get teachers integrating it more #appleEDUChat
A1: Iām going lame with this one since I donāt have a class. I wish it wasnāt a āseparateā thought. The ideas behind STEAM should be incorporated into all areas. #appleeduchat
A1: STEAM and STEM #CBL AND #PBL They can be part of any class. It is a mindset and not a look. I used to be all rows, but STEAM, PBL and CBL are part of everything you see when you walk by my class. #AppleEDUchat
A1 .... I am Dir of Innovation so I work with teachers to incorporate innovation across the curriculum .... innovation is often confused with #STEM and #STEAM#AppleEduChat
A1: I incorporate Sphero robotics and coding into my class as well as cross curricular connections between my students and students in @LLacrosse classes. Science and Literature! My room is a mess, cardboard and tape everywhere! @SpheroEdu#AppleEDUChat
A1- we will be incorporating heavy emphasis on math/literacy but will be using a Makerspace concept to deliver instruction and create real-world connections. This will include lit on STEM careers, and math-applications for problem solving! #AppleEDUChat
A1: hard for me to define when and how it looks in my room- @StirpeCon says it best, itās every lesson. Gosh even in the stories for read aloud- #studentthinkers everyday in meditation they end with āI can change the world.ā #appleEDUChat
A1 Since Iām in a Tech lab, we sometimes coordinate with science units from classes, like animal habitats in Minecraft. We also do 3D printing, coding, Spheros. #AppleEDUchat
A1: I loved incorporating coding and robotics into my instruction. Encouraging students to explore by engineering obstacles and accessories that would complete a challenge for robotics. Our room always had a lot of communication and flexible seating. #AppleEDUchat
A1: Maker challenges were always my go to. Easy to incorporate in any content with any standard. Learners explore and make meaning of content using #STEAM while educator leads and facilitates conversation to ensure itās more than just play. #AppleEDUChat
A1 @rperry209 mentioned Spheros - Iāve been wanting to get my hands on a set for a while. The coding part interests me, but also Iāve seen them used in games in active learning classrooms. #AppleEDUchat
Love that... STEAM takes creativity for educators and learners to create new understandings and ways to demonstrate those understandings. #AppleEDUchat
A1 In my professional learning I incorporate as much #STEAM as I can... it looks like inquiry-based, creative, deep dives into content to foster discussion among my educators. #AppleEDUchat
A1 Its usually a bit loud but it's a good kind of loud where students are engaged and learning at the same time! I'm facilitating the learning not leading it! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Cardboard!!! Although tape, scissors and any materials that you may find at the dollar store work great! We were lucky to also have access to @SpheroEdu@makerbot and @littleBits for additional resources. @mrstechfarlin and I often used #Numbers as a journal. #AppleEDUchat
A2 I also love using Keynote for students to document their favorite way, adding video, recording their voice or though a graph! The creativity there is endless! #appleEDUChat
A2 This year I have created a Engineering notebook for students to use with #STEM challenges. It is really helping Students go through the process - Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve #AppleEduChat#designthinking
I was about to talk about Keynote!! Its my kids favorite this year for creating visuals -- infographics, memes, green screened images, animations - so much creativity! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Honestly...Creative pre planning that allows structure that clearly defines a structure that allows for student creativity. I plan every day, building on the lessons from the year before. By failing to prepare you are preparing your students to fail. #8wordsleft#AppleEDUchat
Q2 I love seeing students draw, and now animate their drawings! Adding visuals, sounds and so much more into their reflections or portfolios of learning using the iWork apps. #appleEDUChat
A2: Planning on using keynote for student STEAM journals this year. So very excited about how students can draw and also include their voice! #appleEDUchat
I think the power is using apps together and not stand alone #appSmash Iāve been using Keynote, Clips, EdPuzzle, Doddle Buddy, and ThingLink together recently #AppleEDUChat
A2: Again, the SpheroEdu app. My students have also been using the Paper app with the Apple Pencil to sketch out their designs before we begin building. These sketches normally lead to more effective use of class resources and better finished products. #AppleEDUchat
Yes! For that playground, they selected one concept card, one materials card (Play-Doh, cars, or LEGO), and one photography card (slo-mo, time-lapse, photo, or video) and created evidence of understanding to share on Twitter. #AppleEDUchat
I like students presenting their work in a multi-touch book with emphasis on technical and graphic communication. Bonus: we can publish them! #AppleEDUChat
The āstuffā like robots are awesome but to truly integrate #STEM we need to teach thinking and problem solving. I talk with so many schools who donāt have the luxury of āstuffā #AppleEduChat
Check out the drawings in this Keynote for Sphero EDCā¦ https://t.co/LNI6OIu0e0 Students LOVED it! Learned so much in one activity, too. #AppleEDUChat
I agree!! Basically whenever another teacher asks me how to do something with more creativity I'm like... Keynote, Keynote, Keynote #AppleEDUChat#Favorite
Also: student video demonstrating a metaphor for a difficult #STEM concept. Weāve gotten some great creative expression with the science! #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/xGn6PTUFxC
Absolutely, and there are plenty of problems for our students to tackle! I love how @jdeinhammer gets students to identify the problems to tackle. She shares on the @WiredEducator podcast. #AppleEDUChat

@tdstech, @jdeinhammer, @WiredEducator
A3: Iāve never thought explicitly about the question in this topic, and Iām loving the wrinkles itās making in my brain. I think Iāll ask the students where they see similarities in the their world and build discourse from their observations. #AppleEDUChat
A3: the connection is them being the problem solver; Iām out of the equation. Just because you have a tech tool and an adult doesnāt mean you have the answer-critical thinkers, collaborating and being imaginative while using resources, is the world around them. #AppleEduChat
A3: I love posing real world problem solving tasks. Challenging them to empathize, then design solutions - connect with real people! #3dprinting#appleEDUChat
A3) We use @BookCreatorApp & now #Pages to create learning artifact. They share along the way & at end of our session. Peer feedback & personal reflection support that connection. #AppleEDUChat
A3: I am always trying to tie the literature we read to real life experiences through robotic simulation. The STEAM connection is the tangible experience of the literature including trips, communication challenges, building and overcoming obstacles. #AppleEDUChat
A3- by bringing in community members with careers in STEM and also introducing Ss to HS pathways supportive of STEM-based skill development. #AppleEDUchat
A3: In art, I constantly point out the connections to other subjects. I even survey the other teachers to find out what Ss are studying so I can make the connections and bring their content into art class :) STEAM definitely goes both ways! :) #AppleEDUchat
A3 I think the more connections you can make within your lessons to real world problems and situations the more they will relate STEAM outside the classroom #appleEDUchat
A3: I donāt need to. When the lesson is relevant others reward them by making connections that demonstrate how their work connected to the world-at-large. #AppleEDUchat
In dig/photo we did a st. photo project on plastic consumption. The students researched our schools consumption along with the effects plastic has on enviro/oceans. We displayed the work in a physical space. Wanting to try a multi-touch book. #AppleEDUChat
A3 We have visitors who work in the #STEM world visit the school. I have always wanted to make a wall of #STEM professionals to give Students a visual - let them dream!! #AppleEDUChat
I watched a Youtube video to figure out how to unclog our nozzle. Just be careful because it gets incredibly hot, but it works! Key I found was making sure we always unloaded the filament when it was done and that the nozzle was tightened all the way. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I donāt need to. When the lesson is relevant others reward them by demonstrating how their work is connected to the world-at-large. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I love using #ClassroomClips and @sketchbookapp! Clips is great for Ss to use not only to create content, but also to reflect and share connections from other content areas. Sketchbook is a great app to use in any classroom to let kids share their creativity! #AppleEDUchat
A small fun activity- I send the class out with iPads on a 5-minute Photo Safari to take pictures of class concepts in action. They aid-drop to me & we display & discuss #appleEDUChat
A3: This is a great question! I find that as students start to hear it more and experience it more, they start to make those connections between content areas. Everything doesn't have to be taught in isolation anymore. #AppleEDUChat
A2In dig/photo we did a st. photo project on plastic consumption. The students researched our schools consumption along with the effects plastic has on enviro/oceans. We displayed the work in a physical space. Wanting to try a multi-touch book. #AppleEDUChat
A3 We also have a #STEM night where I create student activities and local businesses and universities share activities #partnerships#AppleEDUChat Also a parent plus!!!
Itās amazing how students will open up during an activity like the āScience In The Picsā. Such a great warm up/cool down activity too. #AppleEDUChat
Create a film about any subject that shows how people in your community are inspiring others and creating change. #EveryoneCanCreateChange#AppleEDUchat
A4 - When reading āAll Summer in a Dayā by Bradbury, we research & prepare #Keynote presentations comparing the real Venus to the fictional Venus in the short story. #AppleEDUChat
One of my teachers just brought this book up to me!!!! She was like this books is awesome! I then proceeded to show her a picture of you in VR goggles flying a drone LOL #AppleEDUchat
A3: Has anyone used the new features in #pages; book templates, drawing, audio,e-publish to create and demonstrate understanding of real world problems? #AppleEDUChat
A4 favorite ... too many to count!! It must meet curriculum standards. No fluff!!! Here are 1st graders making ladders for fireman and woman. They have to measure it to incorporate math! #AppleEDUChat
Need a back-to-school design challenge idea? Try this Mad Libs inspired template! What will your students come up with? #makered#STEAMMakers#uNlockCreativity
A3: I love using the global goals the United Nations global goals. This has been a great starting point for our photo class to generate ideas. #AppleEDUChat
You're too sweet! But seriously girl.... the way you use tech with your kids astounds me! I was so glad I got to sit in on your Clips session at @iEngageMidwest ! Love how you connect with Ss no matter what language they're best with! #AppleEDUchat
In reply to
@ms_carbone, @jdeinhammer, @RichardsArtRoom, @iEngageMidwest
We did last year to show how hydroponics worked in - it was a lab investigation that they designed and conducted - we also made "save the Earth" books for elementary kids #AppleEDUchat
A4: I have a communication challenge using the Ollie by Sphero with @LLacrosse classes. I love that project. Students communicate across the states using ASCII language transmitted through the Ollie. So much fun.@SpheroEdu#AppleEDUchat
Create a film about any subject that shows how people in your community are inspiring others and creating change. #EveryoneCanCreateChange#AppleEDUchat
A4) One of our greatest challenges is for young adults to reconnect with their creativity and believe in themselves. Practice that every day until they believe #EveryoneCanCreate#AppleEDUChat
Need a back-to-school design challenge idea? Try this Mad Libs inspired template! What will your students come up with? #makered#STEAMMakers#uNlockCreativity
We did this the first week of school and my kids loved it - so much trial and error and discussions on how we learn from failure - plus a classroom swimming pool of trash is just fun #AppleEDUchat
A4: One resource that I've given kids in the past (and recently revamped!) are videos to help them remember the art concepts wherever they are; in science, math, or outside of school! Ts can also share these videos in class to help bring creativity to the classroom! #AppleEDUchat
Love using #Swift Playground to code drones. I have Students pretend to deliver water to a community affected by a flood. Great problem solving and coding!! #AppleEDUChat
A4- quick challenge activities in which Ss have 10-20 min to create a solution to a prompt- develops critical thinking & problem solving skills, but also supports quick thinking and helps them learn from mistakes- shows Ss that failure is part of creative process! #AppleEDUchat
Sketchnote Drills! This is a great way to build confidence in sketch note activities. Then I have the students sketch note about topics they're learning in other places. https://t.co/qajaPqC4ef#AppleEDUchat
A4 My fav #STEAM challenges for my teachers are ones that encourage patient problem solving, require critical thinking, and provide an opportunity to celebrate success! Skyscraper Puzzles are pretty good for this: https://t.co/J03YBCyyXE#AppleEDUchat
A4: I love @SpheroEdu lessons, but I also love giving students a choice to create and build prototypes. This was one of my favorites! They wanted to build a miniarchade for this iPad. #AppleEDUChat
OMG YESSSSS! Lets chat tomorrow - text me when you're available!!!!!! :) Also - I use this with my classroom Ts so their students can learn to Stop Motion! :) https://t.co/a6xNAhgZsp#AppleEDUchat
A5: sharing of any kind is important because it opens up the feedback from the teacher (who has to grade and comment) to the world (who wants to give feedback). #appleeduchat
A5 SeeSaw to share our with their classmates. Everything is documented and posted . I love it because Ss can comment and encourage one another-cyber literacy at its finest! #AppleEDUchat
A4: thereās a great brainstorming card game that we use. It starts with a scenario, then kids pick āparameterā cards, āroadblockā and ādemographicā cards to work through solutions. Really hard but great to bring out creativity and problem solving! #AppleEDUchat
A5) young adults share learning artifacts, have a Twitter account, present at @waukeshaone conference, support teacher learning in building & are creating tutorials. Job skills & active learning. #AppleEDUChat
Q5: My students share their discovers with other students via FlipGrid as well as our social media platforms. The sharing has been a driving factor in my classroom my students want to share their discoveries and get feedback from other students. @Flipgrid#AppleEDUchat
Do you happen to have the link for that game? I remember chatting about that in Chicago, and Iām looking at it for my STEM Through Building elective. #AppleEDUChat
Q5: Love when students share their learning process either in a video, like Clips, Or a reflection portfolio with lots of visuals. I've also had students share with parents on SeeSaw and other classes. Putting a purpose on their learning! #AppleEDUChat
If you're looking for resources to build confidence and incorporate art in your class check out my new project https://t.co/F8d6cEWjOa for videos you can incorporate into ANY classroom! #ArtWithoutExcuses#AppleEDUchat
A5. Our teachers have really jumped into using #Clips for sharing their STEAM projects. We also use @BookCreatorApp when sharing an entire project #appleEDUchat
A5: Seesaw has been a great way for our students to share what they have created with others. Different classroom teachers and our Media Specialists, @MrsDayLib have hosted maker fairs to welcome families in so students can share their creations. #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUChat My school was slow to come around, but they embraced the fact that teachers must allow their students to engage in social media. We also search relevant contests that allow them to shine! Real world interactions allow them to understand their work is relevant!
A5 - Students share their #STEM learning on reflective blogs on Blogger. They address ideas such as, āWhat did I learn from this project?ā and āWhat could I have done better?ā #AppleEDUChat
A5 Students share creative #STEAM projects form our 5/6 art classes through Padlet, FlipGrid, Artsonia. The collaboration in planning a presentation and filming a video is engaging #appleeduchat
If you're looking for resources to build confidence and incorporate art in your class check out my new project https://t.co/F8d6cEWjOa for videos you can incorporate into ANY classroom! #ArtWithoutExcuses#AppleEDUchat
A5: We've had kids partner and create reflective videos which was amazing because they bring their different perspectives together for the project! It's awesome to see them learn from each other and build connections! #AppleEDUchat
A5: My kids are sharing results of a lab with education students to get feedback on their speaking and presentation skills - Flipgrid allows awesome connections (and so does @michaelsmills ) #AppleEDUchat
A5- we encourage our Ts and Ss to share out through video, which greatly enhances collaboration with the community. They see what Ss are learning and how we are preparing them for our changing world- this creates partnership amongst everyone! #AppleEDUChat
A5: yes! We are working to cultivate articulate engineers who contribute meaningfully to public discourse - they choose: video production, book publication, even recipe creation! Sharing is motivational & leads to better work! #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/REVIbrwiXy
We like Clips for students to share and reflect on their learning. Here students share abt our 3D printed Life Logos project. https://t.co/w7ZksSfQW9#appleEDUchat
A5 - Some of my AP Computer Science Principles students shared their final project by entering their program into the Congressional App Challenge. https://t.co/cBdbzepcnm#AppleEDUchat
A5 Group STEAM Challenges encourages students to work together and collaborate with everyone not just their friends! Touring 5 Regions of GA w/Dash! @WonderWorkshop#AppleEDUchat SS coding/SS recording their progress/ SS presentations of their work. @AppleEDU
A6: Start slow with something you are comfortable with and see it through till the end. Don't try to over manage it either. Just let it happen! #appleEDUchat
#AppleEDUChat Create real world experiences that allow student work to have relevance. That said, there will always be pitfalls. Embrace them, and find solutions as you allow lessons to grow and change.
A question for the sketchnoters who've recently made Keynote their primary sketchnoting app: have you found that it has all of the features you need? Iāve used Tayasui Sketches Pro in the past, but found the swipe gestures get in the way sometimes. #AppleEDUchat
A6: It's easier than it seems! Start with what you're comfortable with, find an expert to run your idea by, & keep challenging yourself! Starting with the basics is best & helps you to continue to raise the bar even further! Keep it meaningful & it will be worth it! #AppleEDUchat
A6: Be open minded to student ideas. Projects are not going to look the same, & some may not finish. The process and the growth they have through that is key. What do you want your Ss to learn? Have them document their journey with some sort of a journal or vlog. #AppleEDUchat
So agree! Being a part of this community and networking with such amazing innovators is totally inspiring and helps me keep growing #ChallengeYourself#AppleEDUchat
Start small, reflect often, GET KIDS INVOLVED, & enjoy the process! Also, organize materials & student projects. I use cloth grocery bags for student projects in process. And, I use chart paper with materials traced and placed! #AppleEDUChat
A6: Embrace the mess and enjoy the noise. Start with something simple then refine the process like every other lesson. Find some supportive colleagues, I am talking to you @LLacrosse, @WillcottJulie and @trendingedtech , to help you through the challenges. #AppleEDUchat
Hello everyone! A little late to this #AppleEDUChat - I am the #EdTech coordinator at @ASBIndia in Mumbai, its 7:22 am here. And this is my view this morning as I start tackling the chat questions around #STEAM
A5 immediately sharing with families & friends with @Seesaw is huge for collaboration, SS presentations and extension ideas. Stop Motion is a huge hook for learning! #AppleEDUchat@AppleEDU
You are SO right...The projects may not get finished was a little hard for me at firstā¦then, I found the power in reflection with students. That trumped the finish product. #appleEDUchat
I really love the lasso tool where you can grab pieces and then enlarge, minimize, twist, turn, rotate, flipā¦ helps me focus on the specific then organize all pieces #AppleEDUchat#Keynote
The reflection of learning is always the best part at the end - and is often forgotten about -- let them talk about what they are proud of and what they struggled with #AppleEDUchat
A1: I work across both of our campuses to integrate technology in a meaningful way, but I also teach a #MiddleSchool#Design tech class. Our big push is to get students to be more content creators than producers, using #STEAM tools to drive this change. #appleeduchat
A6 Plan and predict as best you can but donāt wait until you feel itās prefect. The students will help you figure it out! Be the facilitator of learning not the teacher! #AppleEDUChat
A coworker once told me "if you want them to remember, change their routine drastically." Steam is a great way to do that! Break from what they're used to and create new connections. #AppleEDUchat
A2: @cospaces_edu has been a fantastic tool for kids to unleash their creativity - students are so excited to be building #3D worlds with #coding, purposeful world design and creating stories. Students have been using it to share their learning in all subject areas. #AppleEDUChat
