Good evening ! Mary from N Texas here.
my inability to multitask forces me to focus on just one thing. (I'm trying to multitask planning/chatting tonight - we'll see :)
Hi . Ro, ES Librarian at Mesquite ISD. I am perfectly imperfect at jumping into projects with the Nike philosophy of "JUST DO IT!"
. So happy I'm not alone!!! *fights back a tear :-)
Craaaaig! Where's your twin?
Mike from MD, dropping in before crashing. Shouldn't cause I won't be able to stop until it's over.
My imperfection: time management. I always think I can get more done than I have hours in a day.
My desk is not usually neat ... but it usually has character.
Oh my :-) That would make me a little anxious I think.
Psst Jena is moderating the chat tonight if you have a chance to stop by https://t.co/3CowU9anjT
Craaaaig! Where's your twin?
. You've just described me perfectly
That often happens to those who have SO many tabs open in their brain at one time! So much to do!
On my phone with slow signal sitting a hospital but will try keep up...very imperfect conditions. ...:)
Sounds like my take in my own classroom of "creative chaos" at times Craig! I work best if a bit messy!
you and me both. I'm justifying it by "working on IEP writing" simultaneously -- yeah right!
neat desks do not equal effective or great teachers... :)
I like to refer to it as managed chaos https://t.co/3VsGTmyKKq
Sounds like my take in my own classroom of "creative chaos" at times Craig! I work best if a bit messy!
. Coupled with my big ideas in the classroom mentality, I can make a mess at times.
I'm good w/it...makes me a little anxious to depend on others...but keeps me grounded and grateful for generosity
Q1: Why is the word FAKE so important in this quote? "I was born to make mistakes not fake perfection" https://t.co/y2L6zUXIpY
We like that about you Mike, you add a great deal to the conversation so please do stay!
I'm Jim, and it's wonderful that I'm imperfect.
My imperfection: letting go in so many ways but learning to let go of that concern
Great to see you even if it's only for a little bit :-)
A1. Simply put, perfection does not exist.
add a little reflection to that & you can make it all meaningful. Always a positive!
That's the thing about perfection. It creates the illusion we're all inadequate. Grrrr...
A1) Have to recognize when students are just faking perfection. Teach them that it is okay and mistakes are encouraged
A1 How can it be perfection if it is FAKE?
Thanks. Always good to be here.
A1: No one is perfect...anyone who pretends to be is FAKE...fake is not truly happy or successful
I set unrealistic goals for myself then come down pretty hard on myself when I don't attain them. I also fall pray to comparison.
It's a great one. Very glad you could make it.
A1: "Fake" immediately dismisses authenticity on any level.
My perfect imperfection is the rebel in me. I ask for forgiveness, not permission. I do what I think is best for my kiddos
A1: No one is perfect and faking perfection prevents us from the opportunity of reflection and learning
https://t.co/nMdmllYpX6
Q1: Why is the word FAKE so important in this quote? "I was born to make mistakes not fake perfection" https://t.co/y2L6zUXIpY
A1 fake implies not real. Like many "fake" people out there. You know who you are
Can't say it any better than that!
A1: Being vulnerable allows you to grow. Faking it closes the door to learning.
THIS -->> https://t.co/VSviBld3Sg
My perfect imperfection is the rebel in me. I ask for forgiveness, not permission. I do what I think is best for my kiddos
A1: I teach High School. They know when you're faking it...
Creativity is always messy! I have special school shoes for the really creative days.
I like how you refer to it that way https://t.co/zYkLXU1iEg
A1: Being vulnerable allows you to grow. Faking it closes the door to learning.
A1: Think that perfection is usually a myth, nothing really is ever "done" until we decide. Perfect is based on view/opinion
I gave up on perfection a looong time ago. Now just havin' fun!
There you go :-) Since there is no such thing as perfection anyone who professes to be is faking it - Impossible.
I know it! When I saw you are moderating, I HAD to stop by!
Read this a few times & it is so right on! https://t.co/DjoaFab4cD
That's the thing about perfection. It creates the illusion we're all inadequate. Grrrr...
*innocent look* https://t.co/5E0MLYsPhS
A1 fake implies not real. Like many "fake" people out there. You know who you are
A1: We should not insist on being perfect, faking or otherwise because nobody's perfect
A1: it is to change your thinking so that you can reflect & learn from your mistakes... 2/2 https://t.co/h77zB4qXlw
Q1: Why is the word FAKE so important in this quote? "I was born to make mistakes not fake perfection" https://t.co/y2L6zUXIpY
A1) to be fake perfection is to be risk-averse. Not good for schools, teachers, students...
Because we learn by making mistakes, reflecting, trying again. If you never acknowledge mistakes, you're lying to yourself-FAKE!
A1: Well, we live in a society where mistakes/imperfections = weakness/inadequate. People fake out of fear of others thoughts
sorry emotions got away from in that tweet
- oops! forgot to add the tag to the first part!
Sorry to jump in late! Jenny from Ohio 4th grade ELA
YES! And vulnerability allows others to risk as well. It's time we found & shared our humanity.
So wonderful to have you in the discussion tonight Ashley, miss you & hope to catch up soon!
If I'm perfect at being imperfect. Does that mean I'm faking perfection or am I perfectly imperfect?
A1 If you fake perfection, you fool yourself, and others will catch on sooner or later anyway.
A1 The day I think I've achieved perfection I should be banned from being an educator. Faking perfection impedes growth mindset.
How many times have you heard the phrase "Fake it until you make it"?
A1: It's important because nobody will ever understand the definition of perfection. There is no true definition for it.
A1: Try and learn from mistakes until you are satisfied.better than not trying at all.
Yay for you! I personally don't see that as an imperfection. I see that as awesome. https://t.co/BH2VAN3nGc
My perfect imperfection is the rebel in me. I ask for forgiveness, not permission. I do what I think is best for my kiddos
A1) to fake perfection is to be risk averse. To be risk-averse means you are limiting learning oops - bad for teachers & kids.
A1 Perfect is a heavy load. Faking it means that you can't "to thy own self be true"
Is this a chicken and egg problem? https://t.co/Ovm5xXXdfy
If I'm perfect at being imperfect. Does that mean I'm faking perfection or am I perfectly imperfect?
A1: Perfection implies one single measure at the end...mistakes along the way are part of the learning process.
Jumping in late - Patty Webb, Instructional Technologist from Texas
You should see my "magic" bananas after my PK Ss play with the .
Well said & what more could have been created or achieved instead!!!
A1 I make mistakes all the time and I own the hell out of it. That is learning
A1 “Aim for success not perfection Never give up your right to be wrong...” My Learning from Mistakes pg https://t.co/xhStX01fET
LMAO Craig. I don't think you have a fake bone in your body. Besides it's exhausting pretending to have all the answers
Faking perfection isn't teaching our kids to learn from mistakes. We learn from our wrongs.
A1. Teachers are suppose to have it all together and look "perfect".
what a load of bologna... mistakes are NECESSARY in the learning process! Everyone makes them. Ss need 2 see that 2.
My twin! https://t.co/DLkeftgiuc
My perfect imperfection is the rebel in me. I ask for forgiveness, not permission. I do what I think is best for my kiddos
So true, and yet...how do we learn anything?
What's the point in being perfect? Being perfect means you won't learn anything & life is all about learning & exploring
A1. When sometimes we struggle don't want anyone to know.
Question #2 is coming right up.
A1: My kids always learn more when we make mistakes together and figure out how to solve them.
A1. It's all about where our hearts and minds are. (why we do what we do + who we do for) Fake = misaligned energy & focus.
A1 those people who have their act together preaching to you 1 way or another aren't really doing it.
Right! Instead of wasting ur time covering up ur mistakes & "faking". No shame in reflecting & making urself better!
Q2: Since no one is perfect, and mistakes are stepping-stones to wisdom, why are kids afraid to fail? https://t.co/AIPL2EQn8Z
A1: Some SS and TS feel pressure to be perfect; faking it can be a coping mechanism
Why? That's a lot of work. Granted, Ss shouldn't see every wrinkle but showing them a few makes one relatable
Shows them that it's OK for even Ts to make them!
I am so happy to see you! Would LOVE to catch up!
Very true Chris, some of my classroom's best learning moments were based on my own mistake & discussion w/kids about it
. We have to create and consistently promote an environment where failure isn't final, it's opportunity.
A1: Vulnerability is authentic and very attractive ... and it is a prerequisite for learning.
Almost. But I think the yolk came first.
Allowing yourself not to fake, can be painful. As an educator it can be hard to admit you are wrong.
Yes, Yes & YES! Life=ongoing process of trial & error. Why not embrace and celebrate mistakes as chance 2 learn?
Joy Kidd, 5th grade, Prosper TX. Hi!
It can be very hard for folks to be vulnerable though, trust is required.
A2: Ss are afraid to fail cause they feel like the weight of the world would be thrown onto them if they do fail. Not true!
A2: Sometimes it's self-imposed, sometimes comes from other people. Our job is to create environment where mistakes are OK.
Balancing this without overwhelming our Ss.
A2: Grades. Pressure- standardized tests. Pressure from Ts who put 2 much emphasis on the final product. https://t.co/iSGAO3uPkW
Q2: Since no one is perfect, and mistakes are stepping-stones to wisdom, why are kids afraid to fail? https://t.co/AIPL2EQn8Z
A2: There is no real perfection. Only fake.
A2: I think fear of failure is natural...we (adults) must model learning from failures and failing w/grace if we want Ss 2 change
A1. It's taken a few fake, gut-wrenching, imperfect lessons to realize my students appreciate it a lot more when I am REAL!
A2: Think that high stakes & chasing grades set kids up to fail in many cases. Learning doesn't have to have an "ABC"
A2. Too many teachers spend the bulk of their time "correcting mistakes" and calling it "teaching"
Possibly. I have had to read it twice and very slowly.
People become relatable when they allow imperfections to show. You're approachable and you can set an example of resilience
Oooo the "R" word. Agree. To know & grow U must become comfortable with & know yourself. Can't if always looking out
A2) Inherently we all want to be successful in what we do. Kids don't like to be wrong and don't like being corrected.
A2: Kids need to see TS fail! Also, emphasis on grades makes them fearful.
A2. They don't see adults fail/process mistakes. They want to please. Fear of judgement.
Fake usually is an issue when we are too concerned with others' opinions of ourselves.
No one in this chat -->>> https://t.co/m7hiE1WB3a
A2. Too many teachers spend the bulk of their time "correcting mistakes" and calling it "teaching"
Vulnerability allows us to grow. I am new to all of this.
A2 Not enough time in class spent celebrating "failure" as simply "something that didn't work...this time"
Kids are afraid to fail, because too many adults FAKE their perfection. Great leaders show kids that we fail at things too.
Awwww that's sweet. Thank you.
A2 because they have the mindset that there is only one right answer. They are taught the world is black or white
A2: Maybe they haven't felt safe to fail forward. I intentionally model that for Ss & facilitate a trusting climate in class.
A2: Kids think there is a "consequence" if they don't 'pass'. Mistakes must be seen as a positive learning exp.
A2: Fear of failure is learned behavior. You can ask adults a question + few would raise their hands for fear of being wrong.
A1 Ss see social media in every form w/ filters so life in the real realm doesn't exist. Ss don't naturally learn from mistakes
until u do, then Ss see you with new eyes, u are a learner 2,you are on this adventure with them, not a mere observer.
A2 We want our kids to be perfect. Perfect students, perfect athletes, perfect ballerinas, etc. We live lives thru them?
Absolutely. Fear has a lot to do with it too, I think.
I've always found that once students see I make mistakes and am open about it they trust me even more.
A2 As parents we don't let our kids fail enough. We let them win at checkers, we tie their shoes, solve their problems.
Let's not celebrate failure, but rather celebrate LEARNING. Semantics.
More A2: Ss need to understand that failing isn't as bad as it seems. It's an opportunity to reflect & move forward.
Q2 Kids are pressured from little on up to study hard and get all the right answers. Rude awakening in college: no right ans.
A2: Too often Ss do not get an opportunity to reflect and correct their learning. This causes less risk taking
A2. Also "errorless learning" where Ts are actually taught not to let Ss make mistakes for fear they will learn wrong answers.
A2: And here lies the beauty of Kindergarten. Nobody cares. We just help each other.
A2 I think part of it is fear. Fear of not getting into the right college, getting the right job, the right career, the right ...
A2 I think it is something that they learn. Toddlers are fearless in their learning attempts! https://t.co/vQbiTGmM6W
Q2: Since no one is perfect, and mistakes are stepping-stones to wisdom, why are kids afraid to fail? https://t.co/AIPL2EQn8Z
Good point. But think we must own where that behavior comes from. So often Ss taught to perform.
Tony here- perfectly imperfect educator from Charlottesville VA that finds himself teaming w/TX edus often
A2: we shouldn't emphasize the importance of failure, rather what failure teaches us and model the powerful resilience in that.
a2 innovation comes from the gray area that we should be modeling in schools
A2: Kids are taught how to succeed, not how to fail. Pride rears its ugly head.
Maslow's Hierarchy is timeless and explains why we need to help ss feel secure. Only then can they learn. https://t.co/XD8MJIToLc
Q2: Since no one is perfect, and mistakes are stepping-stones to wisdom, why are kids afraid to fail? https://t.co/AIPL2EQn8Z
A2 Kids want 2please, so concerned they won't measure up 2Ts or Ps. When we say "is that your best" once too often Mixed message
I will definitely read this in a bit! Thank you for sharing this!
A2: Because many adults do not create a safe space for them to fail or struggle that is free of ridicule. Setbacks are okay
A2 we discourage cheating but in the real world cheating is collaborating. Cheating comes from a testing mindset
If they learn it, who's teaching them?
A2 Failure=bad grade, possible ridicule, being labeled by the system, being left behind, needing "extra" help, it equals shame.
It hurts to be wrong, so how do we change the culture of thinking to, "making mistakes only mean that your trying."
I find this quote really useful when it comes to dealing with perfection. I really like it! https://t.co/8ZLb7EMWYQ
Just had a great convo w/my dad about little league- said he only swung the bat 2x in 2yrs b/c of fear of failure
Yes & Ss told luv, future jobs etc. depend on how they compare 2 others. Doesn't encourage creative self-discovery
Very good point, when do kids lose that "go for it" mentality? Do we "teach" it out of them?
We teach Ss that failure isn't an option: Ss must pass tests to succeed. Ts know its a process. Ss only see the end.
As long as you do your math facts, alphabet, write your name, sit in your seat ...
A2: The term failure implies - too late, too wrong, too slow, too ___, and we're moving on without you (and that's terrible).
having that class culture tells the kids this is a safe place for learning.
Hi! Do you include your name or does it pop up?
Why? My guess is that the curriculum doesn't allow for this. Too much, too soon, too often.
Yes! And have the opportunity to become Ts themselves & demonstrate knowledge. We're all Ts, All Ss.
it's not OK to fail, that message is taught from preschool, neither is taking risks
I see your name, Charetta.
Question 4 is coming through the door ;-) Yes I know it rhymes.
A2: forgive me for jumping in late. Ss haven't been shown the value of failing. Success is derived from it. Takes mindset shift
So, provide them with those situations now. Get them noticing no right answers early
A2: We could give traditional grading some blame for the fear of failure and the pursuit of fake perfection by Ss.
A2 I didn't have to model (fake) mistakes, they came naturally. We laughed about it & moved on. Teachable moments
A2 fail implies there is an end to learning instead of a fork for a decision to be made
A2: because education ties "mistakes & failing" to grades and labels.
It all depends on your parent. Some never let their kids win at checkers.
How might we celebrate learning after so often celebrating knowing or doing successfully?
How I handle a mess-up of my own says a LOT to the Ss.
Liz from Coppell checking in late...sorry...
Q3: "I haven't failed I just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Why is this perspective so important? https://t.co/pxlLGSlg84
OH Yeah! This is some secret sauce right here --->>> https://t.co/qtm96QnoGV
How I handle a mess-up of my own says a LOT to the Ss.
In the fast paced world of our millenials, there isn't time for failure, learning from mistakes or gaining wisdom. Now or never
A2 No one wants to fail, as it's painful. Kids' failures today are public & viewable for all. No stepping stones; immediate death
What message do Ts send when telling Ss "Bell failed 1000s of times b4 lightbulb success," but giving them an F after 1 attempt?
Not able to stay long- actually need to pack in order to visit TX! Can't wait for the archive tho
A2 Learning is messy but external forces don't like messy. They want immediate results. Thus we're pushed or we lose resources
But you know success does not = perfection any more than imperfection = failure.
Hey there sorry to miss today's chat.
Yes...most Ts=byproduct of current assembly line teaching. Really must give Ts experience becoming co-learners
A3 or I am one step closer to finding out what does work
A2 mistakes should be viewed as progress markers. Ss make progress on their way to mastery, that needs to be the focus as well.
A3. if we teach them to persevere in learning/getting what they want we will have given them the proverbial keys to the castle.
A3 that is sill a negative mindset. Need to flip it to closer to finding the truth
At some point, we as Parents or Ts move from praising every effort to correcting. https://t.co/EUGGzn0hex
Very good point, when do kids lose that "go for it" mentality? Do we "teach" it out of them?
How might we celebrate that process of learning? What might it look like?
Kids see authenticity when we own those moments IMHO
Sorry to jump in A2 Lets niot call it failure call it Beta testing
Q3: That reflects real life. I don't want to imagine a world where the norm is giving up after 1 failure.
I didn't. I beat her in Chutes & Ladders too. She's a tough 22 year old now.
Yes I would even argue that there is no failure in the end. Just different ways/paths to take as we learn lessons
A3: It embodies growth mindset! You've learned something, haven't given up and continue to persevere.
Love this! Yes & so many more tries! https://t.co/FG9lYCdx7w
A2 fail implies there is an end to learning instead of a fork for a decision to be made
A3: Finding out what doesn't work often gives us a better perspective when we do find the right answer or the right way.
A2: For too many data-driven means looking for mistakes and shortfalls more than finding success and building on it.
Can you blame them when it's the only model (either) has ever known?
truth... I think that much of this is perceived https://t.co/jJOmJnFxnm
But you know success does not = perfection any more than imperfection = failure.
A3 bc that's the perspective that allows us to keep going when things don't go as planned or when something is hard
This year, I've had a ton of failures. Thankfully my PLN has let me know this means I'm growing. https://t.co/9aEQrNUXq2
A3: Learning is a journey, not a destination.
It's the process. Celebrate the milestones. Just like we do when toddlers learn to walk
A3: Time spent on finding an answer is still time spent learning. Each path we can lead us to learning. https://t.co/XTe3VTnaBH
Q3: "I haven't failed I just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Why is this perspective so important? https://t.co/pxlLGSlg84
A3: Important cause it's about perseverance & persistence. Not being afraid to give things a 2nd try. Like a !
Correct: The model of school and this mindset has been taught from an early age https://t.co/8xCZzbEoLz
it's not OK to fail, that message is taught from preschool, neither is taking risks
A case of semantics: need to celebrate the learning that occurs through failure.
A3 because that is how you model real life
A3: Failure is usually equated with a dead end...but shouldn't be. Should be a springboard to try something new.
A3 How many people did ONE thing that defined their lives? Plenty! Lots of failures lead to ONE huge, defining moment in life.
A3: If we don't help Ss build resilience they will have a harder time in life. Working hard, trying, failing are all part of life
A3 Success is trial and error. If you knew the right answer from the beginning, you learned nothing along the way.
A3 It is inherently a Don't quit attitude. Constantly learning from every effort. https://t.co/IqD6B0cwua
Q3: "I haven't failed I just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Why is this perspective so important? https://t.co/pxlLGSlg84
A3 Teaches perseverance. We don't give up.
Dig it, tho what if we only celebrate end products? HMW celebrate process?
Wow! Did he ever get over his fear?
A3. We don't celebrate the failures of successful people. Kids shoud hear how scientists, engineers and athletes have failed.
A3 This perspective should be the belief. There is no giving up because mastery is within grasp, failure is part of progress.
A3: Hard to use that philosophy when we give kids assignments due in a certain amount of time for a grade.
This is what makes the U.S. great. We've never tested well. I've read historic reports. Can't find them again.
Its all about how the correction is made; w respect or w/out? Suggestion to help or cut down The message speaks volumes
Agree in fact kids learn to be afraid of mistakes and risks. So of course afraid to explore & discover.
A3) Persistence is a crucial part of learning. We learn from our mistakes. We discover through these trials.
The Power Of Words is, well, simply powerful!
A3: This is the essence of "real life". If we want Ss to be college and career ready, Ss must possess the skills that make it so
A3 sometimes success is finding out why something did not work. I can guess & get it right 60% of the time
A3: because you don't fail UNTIL you quit trying. The power of overcoming obstacles is truly in the word "YET"
A3: perseverance 2 get it done the BEST way in that moment. Then u learn more, & do even better next time. https://t.co/UjhcfOC9oN
Q3: "I haven't failed I just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Why is this perspective so important? https://t.co/pxlLGSlg84
Fork for decision. We can always come back to the path not taken. https://t.co/GMSjE25nn5
A2 fail implies there is an end to learning instead of a fork for a decision to be made
Even 10,000 may not be enough - don't give up before the job is done!
Sorry I checked in and then got a phone call. I am here now.
Too bad we lose much of that. Need Kinder mentality no matter the grade.
one of the best quotes I heard from this year, is that "There are no finish lines in education."
Yes! WE must stop competing and understand we are all in this together.
Can we teach resilience? I'm curious what your thoughts are...
Over time, he got better at it, tho the fear has followed him to some degree for a long time.
It's how we frame those "errors"
60% success rate sounds better than you failed 40% of the time https://t.co/ynqaDNszpI
A3 sometimes success is finding out why something did not work. I can guess & get it right 60% of the time
A3 We explore this very idea in our 20% Time program. https://t.co/G9N2teCC5j Kids work through failures and find success
I tried to throw a little Robert frost in there
A3 there is no measurement for innovation. by it's nature it can't be measured
A3: That perspective let's them see they are learning, that it is a process.
Not sure I'd hire someone who took 10,000 ways to find the right one. But I do like the persistence shown here.
A3 Did someone fail at the same task 10,000x or did they succeed until they learned something else not to do?
Is it semantics tho? So describe it- what might it look like?
Well said. I think Edison also said he got patents on most of what were his original errors - LOL
.A3 because that means you don't give up, keep trying & challenge yrself & others
Come work with me at !! I'm hiring an Assistant Principal! Interested? Message me!
A2 - I don't think they have the life experiences to understand the give and take of success and failure and how it shapes them.
A3: hard work pays off in the end.Do or do not there is no try. said it best.
And grades for which they're judged on their permanent record. No pressure.
A3 Grit, perseverance, forging ahead knowing that any barrier will NOT keep you from achieving!
OHhhh so glad you brought that word up! Do you know Growth Mindset? I love that concept.
To my mind we teach it by teaching perseverance. That we can teach: much of my curriculum is centered around it.
. In college + career, Ss will have assignments/projects due + be evaluated What happens in between is key
I write +13 instead of -7 on S papers. Little thing but positive
Post it notes! Can't live without them - BIG mistake made right
A3 Don't we tell Ss there are different ways 2find an answer, solve problem or resolve a conflict.. Let's mean what we say then
YES! Ss must learn 2B collaborative, creative and flexible 65% of jobs will hold not yet invented!
This week, I will be just peeking in ! Awesome reflections shared!
YES!! We do it each and everyday when we give our STs a fresh slate!
Wow! That is a big change.
Thanks for sharing this story. Very poignant.
Q4: Why do you think Sir Ken Robinson believes, "Creativity is as important as literacy?" Do you agree? https://t.co/CCU3ly9lr6
A3: Maybe they shouldn't even see it as a mistake..maybe 10,000 ways I used to get there.
If we use only grades then we lose the opportunity to teach resilience. Maybe growth goals toward learning targets are the way
Don't celebrate (FAILURE) celebrate (LEARNING) an invisible process. Break products into smaller steps.
And teach your Ss the power of Yet. I can't compare fractions...yet!
Yes! i have learned so much from understanding why something didn't work the way I planned. Best kind of learning
Persistence & resilience = skills we should be helping learners build/develop for success in school/life https://t.co/wWGnnSVAUA
framing is everything. Why tear down when you can build up?
A3: We need to believe that there is always a way, and that way may not be easy.
Love some Frost but he was a bit wrong for our time. Iteration is much easier now
Yes passive learning can't be an option. Get them engaged and using what learn in real world.
A4 I would frame it differently. Creativity = literacy
A4: Creative is extremely important. I think it can be built, explored and given a chance to grow. Can it be taught?
It's almost always nicer traveling the less travelled road.
A4: Yes...creativity is non-quantifiable ability that Ts should do a better job of fostering in Ss esp ES.
"Now batting for the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros...(All-Star) who strikes out 7/10 times!" Said no announcer ever.
A4 Creativity is what allows us to be individuals! STs need to be allowed to demo creativity in their thinking and product!
A4: Creativity separates one product/service/design from another in a crowded market.
A3 Tenacity! Ts need to remind Ss that there must be a different way to accomplish a goal! Keep dreams alive!
Hello everyone! jumping in a lil late
I believe in the POWER of YET! and preach it to Ss! I also refuse to say At-Risk; we are all AT-PROMISE!
Hehehe it IS! Quieter too ;-)
A4 literacy is everything now. Creativity is in most of them
GREAT question. Deserves it's own chat.
Creativity means thinking and perhaps producing things in new and different ways so yes it is Important Q4
The future belongs to those who can grow, adapt, and innovate.
A4: We do all a disservice when we value one skill over another. Why not value each and highlight their vital role in success?
A4: Oh yes. I see creativity as the chaos that helps us grow, and literacy as the comprehension to help us understand it all.
A4: I agree with but I would say that falls into everything in life. Life's all about being creative
A4: Being able to learn is beautiful but just as important is what you can do with the knowledge https://t.co/fPucA56N31
Q4: Why do you think Sir Ken Robinson believes, "Creativity is as important as literacy?" Do you agree? https://t.co/CCU3ly9lr6
Oh I love this! https://t.co/ypC2VsCc1G
A4: Oh yes. I see creativity as the chaos that helps us grow, and literacy as the comprehension to help us understand it all.
A4. Literacy stems from creativity and imagination. As Ts, we can't let the creativity dissolve as the literacy evolves!
A4. Because just like literacy creativity opens doors to new ideas and worlds. Literacy and creativity go hand in hand.
I bet. I think that would be great.
A4: I believe that creativity and literacy are intertwined so they are equally important.
I like to say that we adults need to reclaim and use the Super Powers we had as kids. We need to "Adult Proof" ourselves!
A4 Literacy enables communication. From there your creativity can push the boundaries of free expression.
Great to see you Kharima! Hope your summer is off to a good start and you are above the water line!
A4: Creativity is everything! It's what makes Ss unique.
No, but they might say he's had a 30% success rate, right? :)
Absolutely but it is easier to start young, help Ss not lose their innate resilience. District culture shift.
.A4 Because he believes Ts standardise Ss & squash creativity out of many'think differently,1 size does not fit all'
Math and creativity, science and creativity, all of it, no? https://t.co/3AiNvofFzx
A4. Because just like literacy creativity opens doors to new ideas and worlds. Literacy and creativity go hand in hand.
A4: Comprehension is only half the battle. is the half that catches our eyes. Tickles our fancy. Brings us to life.
Here's another question. Why wouldn't you think that creativity is as equal as literacy? Why's that?
At one point we all travel that lesser road
A4) We don't need people to do things as they've always been done. Innovation is key!
A4: Being literate with the absence of creativity is boring. Creativity is the backbone of individuality.
What are the words to that song... "Free your mind and the rest will follow" Creativity is freeing!
In my 32 years, I've actually taught them all, preK through 12th. Such a great gift of perspective!
Yes! For me creativity=center of my being where I am moving forward w/mind & heart aligned
With "change" as a constant, ability to develop/maintain is key in my opinion as well!
. maybe true balance is understanding when we have to value one more than the other and vice versa.
Why can't I be this intentional in my phrasing. Yes, this is my answer for Q4! I love this! https://t.co/6KTqbJ61XP
A4: Oh yes. I see creativity as the chaos that helps us grow, and literacy as the comprehension to help us understand it all.
A4: Because creativity is the skill that will be most marketable...and can't be replaced by a computer.
Love how you phrased that. All the same is boring
https://t.co/3IjcjeEjjw
A4: Being literate with the absence of creativity is boring. Creativity is the backbone of individuality.
Anytime. The two swings he did take were doozies.
Oooo I love that expression, and agree. Heart and mind must be aligned to move forward in integrity & joy.
A4. Literacy gives us a box to learn and communicate in - creativity helps us think outside it.
. You just made my day. *wipes tear from cheek while smiling
I agree. Creativity can be used to interpret what is read. We need to allow students these options.
AGree! See first and second graders already afraid to make mistakes & explore creativity.
thank you for sharing your perspective on the topic. How can teacher Ed programs address with future educators
Is this why many students fail at the "game" of formal education?
Thanks for letting me tag along tonight :-)
I am also a big believer in "yet". My Ss have really embraced that mindset.
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. Dr. Suess
Well said. I love when literacy is expanded to include multimedia. We each learn differently. Let's support that
"Batting .300" is successful...Yes!
definitely! I lead a session re: Growth Mindset and Leadership. It can't be just Ss and Ts. Admin has to model it
is now trending in USA, ranking 30
Wow, what a story. So telling. Did he overcome that fear?
A4 Education's efforts at producing literate citizens inoculates creativity.Creative or not u can be literate, but a prob solver?
in my class I tell pre-service CTE teachers, take everything you learned and put in a box 1/2
sad. I'm trying to encourage a 7th grader to embrace her creativity this summer. All advice appreciated! https://t.co/SEAPMGIK6V
AGree! See first and second graders already afraid to make mistakes & explore creativity.
A4 Not mutually exclusive. Working together opens up many doors. Enhances the mindset
Funny that a "successful" hall of fame baseball player would get a hit 40% of the time.
THAT'S what I'm talking about- getting more concrete. How else might we celebrate this invisible process? https://t.co/QPVruZLS8L
Don't celebrate (FAILURE) celebrate (LEARNING) an invisible process. Break products into smaller steps.
we go completely open ended and personalized for the whole semester 2/2
. Dr. Suess = Mic drop of the night.
Q5: What role do stories and creative collaboration play in helping kids grow into effective adults? https://t.co/geUF1cklxb
It takes about two weeks to break students into the edcamp style mindset
No aspect of life flourishes absent of
Ken R -The Element-"The place where things we love to do & things we are gd at come together". Motivating speaker saw him in 2011
My daughter asked at that age: What if my best isn't good enough? Shook me to my core. Keep on encouraging her!
Adding onto one of 's tweets. Why might Ss have the fear of embracing their own creativity?
Yes. You can. Choose the right words, model the right actions.
such a hard habit to break, especially if you haven't had PD to really learn any other method.
how many kickstarters fail
All about 2 things - Feeling safe & having fun. When a child is SEEN & appreciated he/she will shine. Let's talk.
Is learning an invisible process? Does it have to be?
Yes. Singing it! Great song.
A5: they make learning real and exciting. Without connection, learning does not exist, it's just work. https://t.co/deYUHF82wi
Q5: What role do stories and creative collaboration play in helping kids grow into effective adults? https://t.co/geUF1cklxb
A5: Stories, imagination, & working w/others gives learners safe environment to play/learn & grow skills to use as adults
A5 Every is a story these days. That is how you get a project story or sell something
A5: Stories promote learning through experience and creative collaboration promotes supportive exploration. Win-Win for kids
It is unbelievable the shift in her mindset from elementary to middle school. More fear of failure
When in Japan 97% of polk could read but 99% of I met were TERRIFIED of being different. Hated 2 be asked opinions
A5: SS can relate to characters. In collaboration they can see how we are alike and problem solve together. Thought is honored.
Stories give the opportunity for reflection. Reflection = thinking about the big picture. Big picture = more authentic learning
A5: creativity promotes confidence and allows children to take risks. That creates confident adults who aren't afraid to fail.
.A5Tch 5/6 yr olds so a lot."play is a child's work." Piaget. Many of my Ss low decile not sch ready so incl play/stories to lrn by
A5: Life is full of compelling narratives. Identifying them brings meaning and joy.
You will have to help her break down that perfectionism and celebrate mistakes as opportunities. She can do it!
A5 Stories help put a human touch on what might otherwise be a dull recital of facts presented as the only solution.
It's an invisible process so long as we hide it behind an end product
A5: Stories give the opportunity for reflection. Reflection = thinking about the big picture. Big picture = authentic learning
A5: Storytelling is powerful. Kids learn from adults. Builds resilience and strengthens relationships.
more than just money. Many fail because actual idea has trouble working
Here in U.S. taught there is 1 right way & to compare to others. Have 2nd graders tell me their work is bad :-(
A5: Super simple-Social skills, interactions, communication with others, respectfully disagreeing.
A5. Good stories tell us about ourselves. Provoke discussion, creation, interaction. Create a world to help us understand ours.
A5 Having the opportunity to tell their story gives them an opportunity to reflect on their writing and journey
Human beings are storytellers. It's how we make sense of our world.
A5: I can't think of a career in which creative collaboration is not a necessary skill. It's what we all do and what jobs require
A5: This allows Ss to practice without penalty...teamwork and risk taking until they're confident to do it on their own.
Well said James. Stories are how we work things out - tell our own stories - but also take down walls between us
that's a bit unfair then. Having to compare yourself to others limits & encourages less creativity!
i.e gills for humans... was just reading about that this mornnig https://t.co/SMWNXk5UUD
more than just money. Many fail because actual idea has trouble working
So smart. We do need to open our process & share.
I have heard describe the same thing about "genius" and it is so sad.
So true, gives learners opportunities to work on skills developing their opinions & dealing w/content, & others
A5: if kids can't collaborate, then they can't function in most jobs. However, that isn't something we should force.
Kids who are taught to play well with others have a better chance of becoming adults who play well with others.
Q6: Putting on your not perfect hat, share a story of how making a mistake helped you succeed. https://t.co/gramxQglgp
A% Isn't play the opportunity to test out knowledge gain inside and outside the classroom
How might we encourage more collaboration in the classroom without forcing it upon students? https://t.co/Ifa8wXhLCf
A5: if kids can't collaborate, then they can't function in most jobs. However, that isn't something we should force.
These are the skills that need to be taught in schools! https://t.co/iPHp0rtDsv
A5: Super simple-Social skills, interactions, communication with others, respectfully disagreeing.
I'm spending this summer helping our youngest daughter hone in on her GENIUS :)
. Hello! I teach 7th ELA..it gives them a reference especially if a text-2-self connection is made
A5: Stepping into one another's story grows which can mobilize and give its why. VITAL to success!
A5 Maybe instead of calling it play we can call it an innovation lab, or applied learning
. we encourage collaboration by creating safe spaces. This goes for all ages of learners 0-100.
Yes we role play those. If not there is no collaboration.
Nothing I LUV more than good story. LUV reading & telling them. Let's all gather around the campfire more often!
Whoops! That should have said WE are spending the summer doing this... Begging forgiveness https://t.co/Dm5Tz2u7Tk
I'm spending this summer helping our youngest daughter hone in on her GENIUS :)
A5: Stories are our linchpin and connection to the past just as they are the conduit to our collective future. It's how we relate
A6 Being perfectly imperfect, mistakes always happen. Reflection allows improvement, aiming for excellence.
In my convos w/pre-service Ts and faculty at UTA we have discussed. See a generation coming along more in touch.
great answer! Safe spaces are the key to exploration and not feeling limited or held back at something!
Oh thank you for this. We all need play in our lives. It is some of the hardest and best work we'll ever do.
Much research on the power of play Kids create narratives that meet their needs. We take it away too soon https://t.co/bX9E9NPSpb
A6. Not getting the summer research internship I wanted in college lead me to the job that set me on the path to my profession.
great to hear you have such resilient students! Power of a !
A5. We must create an environment where Ss appreciate and respect each other... to be confident in their creative collaborations.
A6: I don't think in terms of mistakes; I just think in terms of learning. And the opportunities to learn are everywhere! :-)
A6) I was not a very good salesperson. Hence my career change into education. Thankful for it!
A4? states that the most neuro. active part of Ss day is on playground. That's a problem.
A5 So many of our chats boil down to the dev of strong relationships with Ss for success. They must learn2 develop them as well.
A6: I make more mistakes than most people I know, & I repeat them. That's what makes me who I am; that's why I'm a good teacher.
what does that physically look like in the classroom?
So are we! https://t.co/Fw6Su7jBnB
A6) I was not a very good salesperson. Hence my career change into education. Thankful for it!
I guess what I am saying is that a shift is happening among higher ed faculty and that's a key paradigm shift.
A6 Making mistakes helped me see what didn't work for me & my campus as far as efficiency is concerned. Ex. emails alone was 1
A6: I've made my fair share and I truly take each failure as an opportunity to grow.
So much storytelling can happen with all of this technology. Of course, can do it without too.
LUV! Often individual differences not celebrated or honored. MUST feel safe 2 learn effectively
Great chat guys! Have a beautiful week!
So are we sir...so are we!
A6 Redoing things lead to an entire new line of deeper thinking. Sometimes we live in rough draft mode and then need to edit
Final Challenge coming up!
.So true.Have OTJs in NZ now (Observational T judgemnts)If S fails a test but bks/wk & T knowledge say shld pass.Use OTJ
A6: I wanted to major in vocal music but couldn't play an instrument so that led me to journalism teaching which I loved.
Sharing my story allows my Ss to know it's ok to travel the path less traveled. We are unique and that makes us great
A6. Nothing to see here. I'm not sure I have anything.
Thank you so much for moderating the chat tonight! Great questions.
A6 First time I drove a tractor I learned real fast that the clutch didn't stop the momentum. That lesson stuck with me.
I make mistakes with my Ss, I react, or say the wrong thing. Going back and making it right. Let them know I made a mistake.
Challenge: Tweet one quote that inspires you to dare and share what makes you perfectly imperfect. https://t.co/4nVhGQwo2h
Apologies for "peacing out" - Looking forward to learning w/you
So important for teachers to admit to their mistakes. Shows students that it's okay to do so https://t.co/Ku69zubY5D
I make mistakes with my Ss, I react, or say the wrong thing. Going back and making it right. Let them know I made a mistake.
. Got to tch thm at 5 to be creative & resilient so not squashed out by ed system when older.
LOL reminds me of when I was learning to drive a 40-foot bus I had to double clutch. Disastrous at first ;-)
A6 in 140 characters, yikes! I'll try to think of non-epic mistakes to fit in here!
A6: Failing my private pilot license written test at age 16. Made me a better student and an infinitely better pilot.
Apologies for "peacing out" - Looking forward to learning w/you
"I was never a big shot. I was just a little shot that kept on shooting."
A6: I walked away from a career b/c I was miserable and failing, and I found a career where I am successful and thrive.
Yes! Both Semingson and Brown are very instrumental
Be careful what you lean on, it may not hold you up - or lean freely and be prepared to make an art of falling. -Hawk Madrone
Semper Fi, couldn't agree more. Ss need to hear those stories!
A6 Being weighed down by mistakes is overwhelming. I look for the bright side, see where 2go & what impact I can make 2benefit
Here is a quote I love from Robinson. Creaitivyt truly is at the heart of our humanity IMHO https://t.co/0INW43OZGf
A6: An example would be thinking that I know it all. Not needing feedback at all. Turns out the key to learning is feedback!
A6: Legit thought a S stole-Once I realized I was wrong, apologized, asked 4 forgiveness resulted N strengthening trust w/Ss
Yes. We need to model this for Ss too. How do we handle mistakes with grace? https://t.co/TSMcSOS4oO
So important for teachers to admit to their mistakes. Shows students that it's okay to do so https://t.co/Ku69zubY5D
I make mistakes with my Ss, I react, or say the wrong thing. Going back and making it right. Let them know I made a mistake.
Ohhh you need to read The Not Perfect Hat Club!
Nice chatting with you! Be safe and have a great week.
Please take the time to thank for hosting such a wonderful & fast-paced discussion! Greatly appreciated!
Please join us in thanking for hosting tonight! Excellent conversation all ... Lots to think about.
A6: I chose not to get my degree in edu. Had to go back to school and 18 yrs later...
A6 I should have something. Really. Need to teach Ss how negatives weave their way into future positives. Brain focuses on Negs.
.OTJs r what Ts always do anywayU know what level S is at rdg & if test says diff bt every day success at level OTJs grt
See you soon Tony. Thanks for coming!
Challenge Q: "In a world in which you can be anything, be kind." Everyone can be perfectly imperfect at .
Very motivating way to look at "going for it" in our teaching & learning!
Come back next week when hosts
More information will be coming soon about next week's chat!
Thank you & for a great conversation. Looking for perfection is draining & serves no one. Least of all our students
“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” - Albert Einstein
Yes! Gives Ss a chance to teach and feel okay about making mistakes.
