Please introduce yourself, where you are from & what you do in legal. The chat starts... RIGHT NOW!
Kim Craig of Bold Duck Studio. A1: LPM will become tablestakes and no longer a differentiator for law firms. It will be the expected way to plan and manage legal engagements whether it be done by a dedicated LPM titled person or the lawyer or a combination of both, #lpmhq
Q1: As we close out 2018, what does the future hold for LPM? Is LPM a role that we will be talking about in 5 years? Or is LPM simply table stakes? #LPMHQ

Today's topic "Will you love me tomorrow?" The Future of LPM
A1: Some firms will continue to use the LPM role as a "gap filler" & a "jack of all trades" while others will become more serious about the actual discipline. Both will gain traction but the "gap fillers" will need to be multi-disciplinary using other disciplines & skills. #lpmhq
A1 I think it will be in the middle and LPM will play out like all legal sector trends: the hype will die down (new topic will take over), the progress will be slow and the need will remain. #LPMHQ
Aloha from Honolulu, HI! Excited to help moderate today. Day job is customer success/process improvement. I am also a recovering educator and Saas founder. #LPMHQ

A1 Good Q. I think the usual change tactics such as client demand + pilots with success stories based on metrics - including client service-related metrics - may help. #LPMHQ
As with anything, I think it’ll continue to come in waves. People like to focus on LPM (and innovation) when they’re feeling pressure, but let it sit in the background otherwise. #LPMHQ
A1: No formal guidelines. The unevenness across the industry is becoming even more distinct. Just because there R more LPMs does not mean the discipline has matured. But that being said, each org has its own unique culture & introducing new concepts is a challenge. #LPMHQ
A1: Totally agree regarding getting clients involved in defining the value and creating momentum. Hard for most lawyers to argue with an approach that clients respond favorably to. #LPMHQ

A1: Table stakes in terms of responding to RFPs and staying profitable, but lots of firms will still be in the early stages of figuring out how to really use LPM. Won’t be as ‘hot,’ but many will still be using counterfeit chips for those table stakes. #LPMHQ
A1 I think the need for LPM will definitely remain. #biglaw will cycle through trying billable PMs, pricing analysts, internal facing practice PMs and legal ops counterparts. I think all are valid it just becomes a question of where the firms see value & where they can invest

A2: I don't know if I would consider LPM "hip" any more. Will it disappear? No, I don't think so. Legal Ops folks embrace PM (for the most part) so hard 2 argue w/ that. Will it remain a defined role vs. an org's capability? Perhaps that is what maturation will look like. #LPMHQ
A2: Have heard Kim say it before. Managers have been doing LPM for years. They just don't have - standardized, reproducible processes... A person works with this person or client who likes it this way and another person likes it another way. #LPMHQ

A1: Love the "counterfeit chips" analogy. That is pretty accurate. Pull back the curtain and what is really happening? What are the true capabilities and discipline in place in those firms? #LPMHQ
A1 I agree that in 5 years firms will still be in the early stages of figuring out what lpm means to them. I think it will still be mostly a grassroots effort from a few motivated individuals within each organization that try and build/define the role #LPMHQ

A2: Many firms can respond to RFPs regarding their application of PM ("we budget, plan and track progress") because of pricing investment and/or tools. So it is misleading. RFP responses put a spin on their true application & capability. Ask the lawyers if LPM is in play. #LPMHQ
Thank you for coming ready to share and being open. Next chat is 2 weeks! Post-Holiday Edition. December 26, 2018, 12pm, EST. Topic: “True story. My best LPM was a bartender.” Qualification of a LPM. #LPMHQ
A2: LPM cannot be about a tool, right? It has 2 first focus on core tenets of PM & then determine how best 2 execute w/in UR culture. But convincing successful practicing lawyer 2 add layers of discipline & change when they're having a very successful year is a killer. #LPMHQ

A2: its hard to quantify if its a resurgence. I have been in LPM for 5 years & have only seen growth in this area. I think that other business skills i.e. process improvement, design thinking, etc might over shadow lpm at times but lpm in some form is necessary #LPMHQ
