What's going on with and ?
A1a "That thing you do watching DIY on HGTV, like how to make a fish pond in your backyard?" That's PBL. Ideate. Plan. Make. Assess
Good morning, Jon from MD.
PBL is learning by doing instead of learning by tests and test prep. One way to explain...
1-PBL is high impact for SL but must be authentic and engaging and based on professional learning for teachers for implementation.
sure is fun. This time of year sweaty, too. Oh, and minding all the open (vertical) mine shaft openings..
Rather than read paragraphs and answer multiple choice questions every day, make a newspaper to do better on end of year tests.
A1- PBLs must be authentic and student driven. Ts must be willing to let go and watch magic happen
PBL awakens students interest and gives them reasons to learn
Am I tweeting the wrong chat?
Just checking. Is PBL Project Based Learning because if it is I'm really into it
a1. I know very little, so I am looking forward to learning today
A1: PBL places the learning where it should be - on the students. They are engaged, seeking solutions, gathering data, etc.
Good morning, Terri from N Texas... Just finished year with PBL products that rocked my world. :0)
A1|PBL invites Ss to ID a problem a character (or historic figure, author) learns to solve, & explore similar strategies ourselves
The teacher helps plan and facilitate in PBL, but the Ss do the work. They will take the learning to places you never expected.
You're good. This ( )is vacation version of
PBL is not the same as doing projects.
#1990 In the dime stores and bus stations, people talk of situations, read books, repeat... — Bob Dylan

Mike Phillips from Muskegon, MI just looking for some Sat AM reading from the camp chair.
Sorry for the tardy- Jaymee TX PL Coordinator & Future AP @ MRE
A2: The power of PBL comes in the assessment at the end of the project. How can we summatively measure success?
There's great potential in , but it can become just as teacher-driven & inauthentic as other curric if not careful
analogy. Projects are dessert whereas PBL is the main course
A2: Ss drive the learning. Removes sage off the stage and Ts facilitate. Love this aspect for Ss and some Ts struggle with it
A2 With PBL, kids are doing things instead of listening to someone talk.
Does anyone use for PBL? amazing stuff if you're looking for some great lessons!
A1: PBL allows Ss to drive & own their learning. Allows them to solve problems, collab, & think outside of a book/worksheet
A2- the strength of PBL is in the depth of knowledge questioning that students can achieve while engaged in PBL
Students define a problem and create a logical solution. Fun to watch in action.
Agreed, but I also think it comes in the process. It is exciting to see Ss authentically engaged in learning.
A1: PBL can be very successful in the area of science, especially if you are a state that has adopted NGSS
I use a great rubric, but also collect words of Ss after present.4qualitative info for the presenting S. https://t.co/o8UAo6Fc72
A2: The power of PBL comes in the assessment at the end of the project. How can we summatively measure success?
PBL is hard to do well. I encourage you to get some training on good implementation strategies.
P should stand for problems, not projects. Sometimes we get that confused.
Good morning Shaelynn from Iowa. I <3 and lucky to have received my training from one of the best!
A2- student conversation and feedback along with a deeper thinking must drive the PBL. High impact with Ss ownership
Right The questions should emerge organically, and Essential Questions become better if not T' own
Maybe we should call it Process based learning. https://t.co/1R6Rphmhpg
Agreed, but I also think it comes in the process. It is exciting to see Ss authentically engaged in learning.
absolutely, but Ss should be involved in quantifying that assessment
I agree but 2 diff things; I use both types to reach all. https://t.co/VqkcnPpRxp
P should stand for problems, not projects. Sometimes we get that confused.
Fair, project can mean different things to different people https://t.co/JnMwo7RKiP
P should stand for problems, not projects. Sometimes we get that confused.
PBL must be global because Ss are well aware they exist in a global environment
Agree. All about S interest within parameters set up by the T. Have 2 have clear expectations & outcomes https://t.co/YxmkgPpCA8
A1- PBLs must be authentic and student driven. Ts must be willing to let go and watch magic happen
1/2 My fav PBL this year: what world problem do you want to help solve? Required reading and research to https://t.co/PqIz7KF1K4
PBL must be global because Ss are well aware they exist in a global environment
I'll admit to knowing little about PBL. This is all new to me https://t.co/UxZTglznIM
As we chat about PBL this morning, I need to credit all of my tweets to who taught me everything I know about PBL!
A3: Facilitating buy-in from teachers to see how Ss can learn. W/o passion from teachers we won't get passion from Ss
Hey hack cking in with spotty WiFi from train. Lisa. MS Principal
2/2 present full 360 of prob, causes, effects..will feed into genius hr this year to find solutions
Can't find the Qs so I'll just say: became yet another subject in our school, & we had to back up &rethink intent
We quickly moved from to --it became a mindset rather than a method. Transformed our school!
I missed the questions too. The other ones are typed in same format. I feel like one of my students. :) https://t.co/6QAftQvOsT
Can't find the Qs so I'll just say: became yet another subject in our school, & we had to back up &rethink intent
NOTHING happens without T buy-in https://t.co/lAdQTeThN8

Good morning . Chris from Indiana...Elem principal transitioning to Jr-Sr High principal this year

We quickly moved from to --it became a mindset rather than a method. Transformed our school!
I find w/ & that planning is SO different. Much more spontaneous & student-responsive. Complex, but fun.
A3| the term too easily implies non-literary, non-theoretical subject: yet big ideas, minute poems, art afford PBL opps.
Did someone say "extra time"???? 😊 https://t.co/rnhM6q9nvn
I have found that many Ts use PBL because of the extra time they have.
How much of PBL is student led in regards to selecting the problem to solve?
We started w/ mentors from BIE, expeditionary learning & quickly moved beyond them. Still a great place to begin.
A3| I am using ProblemBasedLearning as def of PBL this a.m. I work to have Ss pose problems. Socratic discussions a nice chance.
A3- teacher passion, PL and networking for teachers is important to develop student passion https://t.co/uAc6IJqQfh
If we keep data in our schools on what content is learned and what is forgotten, PBL will just be common sense planning.
Ha ha nope! Definitely not! 😄
For me this year, that was the PBL...and S interest in such varied ?s was amazing and very personal https://t.co/QqzpRBDFr2
How much of PBL is student led in regards to selecting the problem to solve?
Love socratic circles and collaborative conversations. Ss need this.
Does everyone think in terms of problem / solution for project based learning?
Love at for great resources on - they send out a newsletter, maybe biweekly.
A3| Nice! And this leads to a mindset of https://t.co/SPuJixYazn
I like to think of as an instructional strategy to spark inquiry!
I love how we are finally realizing reggio emilia's method so much earlier for inquiry based learning
What is your thought process for ? If not problem/inquiry based? Is it simply a tool to share and collaborate?
I like how this plug ends in so important in writing, reading, learning.
folks... Most discussion is happening on

I like to think of as an instructional strategy to spark inquiry!
I tried the Write Around conversations this week in the Daniels' recent book - nice way to put control in S hands!
A2 PBL teaches Ss not an answer for a test but how to find solutions to problems through a process of trial & error
We like to think of problem, learning issues, possible solutions- seemingly cyclical. https://t.co/1uotugV8hl
Does everyone think in terms of problem / solution for project based learning?
True. Takes passionate Ts w growth mindset to instill this in Ss. is a great learning opp for Ss. https://t.co/T5QloUBAJt
A3: Facilitating buy-in from teachers to see how Ss can learn. W/o passion from teachers we won't get passion from Ss
#1989 I like to think about stringing songs together like a
string of pearls, or... — Emmylou Harris
https://t.co/z60hX9MF30
We attempted to make one for faculty & it was obsolete within a year. 😂
Chess is an excellent tool for PBL. One must learn to navigate thru & around problems constantly.
Takes teacher flexibility as well as student flexibility. https://t.co/GF9nOAlnT3
I find w/ & that planning is SO different. Much more spontaneous & student-responsive. Complex, but fun.
engagement thru the roof; mutual respect between Ss grew exponentially; Ss grew as humans!
I love all teh different solutions you get from the most unlikely Ss with PBL. It literally allows every Ss to shine.
I love all teh different solutions you get from the most unlikely Ss with PBL. It literally allows every Ss to shine.
Don't we have to if we are building citizens? Prob scenarios present themselves everyday! https://t.co/Fk7RuHQpUa
How much of PBL is student led in regards to selecting the problem to solve?
. Aha moment 4 me as I read feed...Why wld it be helpful to know how to do XYZ skill? Ss generate problems to solve using LA skilz
A4|"Represent a character in the medium of your choice",backed up by writing, evidence per John Barrel in TeachingForThoughtfulness
A3 Difficulty of PBL-getting all Ss to buy into the project so there isn't an 20/80 split(20% do the work-80% take credit for it)
It's been so long since I've been able to actually participate in , but hoping to catch the last 20 min!
PBL must be student led. The results are SO much better that way!
Entire school begins thinking relevance..increases dual credit courses & real-world curriculum https://t.co/DiX2UAm8TL
Q5: In what specific ways have you seen students flourish due to PBL?
A2:I love that encourages the questions more than the answers. You can't use Google to find new ideas. https://t.co/OYiZVGV97V
A2 PBL teaches Ss not an answer for a test but how to find solutions to problems through a process of trial & error
#1990 In the dime stores and bus stations, people talk of situations, read books, repeat... Bob Dylan

PBL allows Ss to tap different skill sets so they surprise themselves when they flourish
Increase your Tchr Ldrship! Join the Team! Apply by 5-30 for the Minneapolis Summit July 23-24 https://t.co/rBjeAVl9br
A5: All Ss can shine with PBL. Increases their confidence and become more willing to try. Ss want more & challenge the T or status.
Looking for book donations to beat summer reading slump for 6th graders. DM if you can help. Thank you.
I have to go. Cycling with my crew. Great chatting with you all.
Writers & filmmakers (these are often our projects) can start with story when launching project. Stories can make great arguments.
A5 Ss find innovative ways to solve problems that havent been done;Ss encourage others;Ss learn failure is an option but not an end
We see as one of seven paths to transform towards lifelong learning - more holistic approach
A5: gives the phenomenon that creates the spark of curiosity. Once we have that in class, Ss are all in for learning.
A5| My favorite Qs are heard after brainstorming, ? & favorite reply: "Yes" goes beyond
So true. I had 2 Ss couldn't find simple machines in school so they went to the head custodian and asked for help.
Design principles IMO key 2 PBL stdnt voice matters, stdnt agency key, student influence critical guided but not owned by teachers
You see much more teamwork and collaborative learning with PBL. It is exciting to the Ts and Ss together.
I love that moment!! https://t.co/tGMs09CGju
PBL allows Ss to tap different skill sets so they surprise themselves when they flourish
A5: They keep trying and don't give up so easily. They connect the learning experiences - take it a step further.
So right! That's what is so exciting..they learn to KEEP trying.
How 2 assess school culture that is ready 4 ? Traits?
and PBL failure can't result in high stakes grade "punishment" but rather opportunities to keep working at learning -
do you know of a good PBL teacher's book? I'd love a new one for my preservice teacher course at
The challenge of PBL can be getting S's to move away from "getting a grade" to learning. Trust is key! https://t.co/chAdKRA4sy
I love when the lights goes on and they understand, they get excited & other Ss celebrate with them.
Thank you for a great discussion on PBL. I haven't been chatting for a bit & this was great. Have a nice weekend.
