Hi Everyone! My name is Mariah. I’m a middle school principal from Pennsylvania! Excited to learn with the fabulous @Dwight_Carter and all of you tonight! #PrinLeaderChat
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
A1: Coaching from the "top" reinforces the vision and mission that you have. It also shows the investment that you have in the team you are leading. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Coaching matters because even those doing their absolute best and trying to improve have blind spots. Honesty is one of the highest forms of service. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Coaching by a Principal creates an environment of collaboration and mentorship. It is an opportunity to build leaders within the school that understand and support the vision and goals of the leadership. #PrinLeaderChat
A1- building teacher leaders and future principals is our legacy to our system. Someone did it for us and we must pay it forward. Plus, just the ownership alone, helps your whole building #PrinLeaderChat
A1: A measure of a principal is how many leaders he/she develops. And, because you can’t do it all on your own. And, because someone probably did it for you. And... so many reasons. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Coaching teachers and other building administrators is important toward building capacity and strengthening the voices — all help to create and model leadership for our students.

A1: A measure of a principal is how many leaders he/she develops. And, because you can’t do it all on your own. And, because someone probably did it for you. And... so many reasons. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: principals should be servant leaders. They are like the head coach of a team. They know what needs to happen to ensure the vision and mission come to be. They have a way of helping people find the best in themselves to get the most output for the team.
#PrinLeaderChat
A1 Coaching is the #1 way to build our practice- including our own... to set the bar and then exceed it- Einstein said it best- it’s impossible to solve a problem you helped to create.
We build@capacity by sharing the best prof development strategy #PrinLeaderChat
A1: I have thrived on coaching throughout my career (& floundered w/o it). I owe it to my colleagues to provide guidance & coaching, just as I expect it for myself. Through coaching, I too become a studious learner. #MutualGrowth#PrinLeaderChat
A1: I think coaching plays a key role in professional development. We all want to get better & be the best version of ourselves in all that we do, including what we do in our schools! Coaching is all about meaningful conversations to improve our practice. #PrinLeaderChat
A1. You are responsible for the environment in your building. If you want teachers to model growth mindset to students, then you must model it to teacher #PrinLeaderChat
It shows in how you move, if it is about the ppl then everything you do leads with the ppl in mind. etc. It becomes the culture of your purpose #PrinLeaderChat

A1: It is only fair for the staff member and the principal to have the principal own learning. If we talk assessment for learning with the teachers (which we do, of course), then we have the perfect opportunity to coach and assess staff formatively too. #PrinLeaderChat
Great convo going on here. Hope it's okay for me to jump in late. I'm a HS math teacher piloting inquiry learning & passionate about STEM integration. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Coaching from my principal has been extremely beneficial as a first year admin. My principal has helped me gain an understanding of decision making and programming at the building and district level #PrinLeaderChat

All of the above. I was an instructional coach prior to current gig as principal. Through the coaching work, I found so many of my "why's" of the profession. It was powerful for me finding deep meaning and joy for the work; coaching has become my mode of ldrship #Prinleaderchat
A2: I would say one of my go to coaching strategies has to do with listening openly to our teachers. Sometimes teachers just need an open door and an open ear for their ideas to come out in the open and flourish. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: A measure of a principal is how many leaders he/she develops. And, because you can’t do it all on your own. And, because someone probably did it for you. And... so many reasons. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Tchrs should know the essential priorities of the school & leadership. Allowing that to frame informal convos allow discourse (not debate). Ideas are developed organically & tchrs have an chance to test those ideas. Success/buy-in breeds success/buy-in. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Go-to Coaching Strategies — Active Listening and holding to the commitment to “meet them where they are”. Allowing for informal “coaching sessions”.
#PrinLeaderChat
A2 #1 make sure that we are both in it 4 the right reason-intention is imperative. #2 listen and guide -it’s more about feedback&the coachee reflection than “u”
When someone coaches me 2hit a ball better I could care less about their swing, I need Fb on my swing #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Modeling, co-teaching lessons, and facilitating PD workshops are go to strategies to help grow leaders. However, the most helpful strategy is honest, open discussions focused on professional growth and student achievement. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: When reflecting with teachers, I try to avoid questions that might result in one word answers. I believe good coaching is largely defined by the amount of reflection the teacher does, not the amount of talking I do. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Know Your Colleagues.Foster Transparency. Collaboration is Key. Create Clear Objectives and Goals. Celebrate Successes. Build Mutual Trust. Pave the Way for Success. Be Forthcoming in Your Feedback. Encourage feedback.
#prinleaderchat
A2: I think reflective conversations are a big part of coaching. But, I actually think that creating a culture where people want to learn and aspire to be the best version of themselves is where coaching starts...#PrinLeaderChat
A2: My school has implemented coaching cycles based on @SweeneyDiane work on student centered coaching. Focusing on students and their growth is so powerful, and it keeps coaching from being perceived as a way to fix teachers (because that is not what it is for!) #PrinLeaderChat
A2: @happyteacherguy Yes!!! Thank you for sharing. Reflection process and prompts will allow deeper learning to continue after you have ended your coaching session.

A3: Just fell into @BreneBrown currently reading Dare to Lead with the #joybookclub and I recommend this follow and read because it is real, relevant, and speaks to the emotion of the work. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Not directly related to coaching, but all with incredible lessons that are my coaching fav's:
Focus: Mike Schmoker
Cultures Built to Last, DuFour and Fullan
Fierce Conversations, Scott.
These have been gold for me in building leadership capacity and clarity. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: I’m inspired by the blogs of @DavidGeurin, @smgaillard, & @hansappel094...I also try to catch all of @DrBillZiegler’s podcasts! I rarely miss them because they are POSITIVE & focused on students and improving our professional practice. Can’t miss with them! #PrinLeaderChat
A3: I love Dr. Becky Bailey's @ConsciousD podcast. She is wonderful at coaching language to use with kids. I rely on it heavily for social emotional learning and restorative practices. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: jocko-navy seal. Do I need to say more. He is a bad man.
David Coggins- on every close to every special forces team, 50 ultra marathons. Another bad bad man
They got the "it" factor.
#PrinLeaderChat
A3b: Adding the “Why” — Love the practical strategies @PeterMDeWitt included in his book “Coach It Further” & narrative structure made it very accessible.
Why for Twitter — Daily doses and great reminders helping to keep our coaching on track.

Q3: Just mentioned #followership a moment ago, and reflecting back on the body of literature surrounding leadership (coaching), I have also been fascinated by the literature around followership, especially Kelley (1996). #PrinLeaderChat
Thanks for the mention during #PrinLeaderChat, Mariah! Honored by that and grateful to stand alongside those inspiring forces. Appreciate our kinship, Mariah!

My Algebra I Ss are doing really well. Geometry is a challenge, I think because we are so good with best practices for "easy" learning... to their detriment https://t.co/6bwWiJz4Fk#PrinLeaderChat
