I don't want this to sound like a sales pitch put tonight's topic on #txhsfbchat is the perfect night to check out https://t.co/YT1nbFlVU4 We are building ways to streamline your coaching staff. Seriously!
A1: Our spring schedule is a little more flexible than the fall. The focus is shifted from game prep to player prep. More competition among ourselves #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Oregon small school answer - We cannot do anything till after Memorial Day. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, Basketball gets Tuesdays and Weekends. No Pads some primarily Install and Practice Routines being taught. Will do 6 of these. continued #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Schedule wise we’re more sporadic during spring, some weeks we’ve got 3 practices, some 5. Spring install and practices focused mostly on base and fundamentals, fall is obviously more opponent based #txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q1: How does your spring practice week differ from your fall practice week? If you don't have spring, then early fall camp #TXHSFBCHAT
A1 We don’t have a spring in Indiana we use early fall camp to concentrate on a lot of technique while slowly teaching and installing scheme #txhsfbchat
A1)Last year we took the first 3 days of spring to just work with the incoming freshman. But the next 7 days will look very similar to each other. I'd rather repeat then assume they know anything. #txhsfbchat
A1: a little more of good on good than in the fall and the focus is more player development oriented, allowing more shuffle in position and depth chart to allow them to battle for spots and show what they can do against our best #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) Mostly the same except we have more 1st O vs 1st D periods built in whether that be OL/DL, 7on7 or even full team periods. In the fall we will work more against scout defenses to prepare for the opponent that week. #txhsfbchat
Over the years we've evolved our summer OL/skills sessions that incorporate fundies and playbook integration so we are able to hit the ground running going into fall camp Typically we have 2-3 run concepts and 2 pass protections ready for camp and we build from there #txhsfbchat
A2; Continued we will then go host or go to a Team Camp with other teams and with full pads. Here we will not do much Install we will fine tune and drill in pads necessary fundamentals and techniques. Scrimmage in PM, we get 5 days of this middle of June. #TXHSFBCHAT
Corey Dragge OL/DL Broomfield HS, CO. Freshman
A1) I use it to evaluate incoming freshman and see what kind of hot mess I got myself into this year. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: For me on the OLine (we platoon) I spend a week seeing where we're at, what kind of chemistry we have. Then I start on the depth chart - figuring what we need to do to get 5 strong across the front. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Start with your identity and then move as fast as the kids can handle it! Kids every year are different so you have to adjust every year! #txhsfbchat
A2: draw it, talk about, walk through it and see it in action and use film to correct it. That normally appeals to all the different learning types and give everyone a chance to figure it out. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q2: we try to install a 2-3 Plays/formations a day. Nothing that overloads the players and heads and gradually the practice script gets larger #txhsfbchat
A2: one run install and one pass. Try to address the WHAT, WHY, and HOW of each of the plays. we adjust our installs based on how quickly we are picking up concepts. #txhsfbchat
A2: Usually 2 runs, 2-3 passes on O that first week, pretty similar on D, our base is pretty simple so spring is spent getting great at it. Once we get into fall, we start to add the counters to the base #txhsfbchat
Working with freshman the install pace is as long as it takes. They are smart kids but not all of them have played before so we have to go over everything starting with stance. #TXHSFBCHAT

A2: In general I like to use this time for fundamentals - again seeing where we're at. I also like to work w/the JV guys coming up - setting expectations. That can take a few weeks - THEN I'll start throwing plays at them - install. To much, to soon can wreck a kid #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 - we focus on our base run and pass schemes then build off it. Begin with the summer, build through camp, then 1st week of fall we install the whole schemes. Week 2 repeat.
#txhsfbchat
A2: Day 1 Inside Veer & Base Front /Coverage Day 2 Outside Veer / Lead / Load & Base Even Stem to Base Odd with Base Coverage Day 3 Midline & Base Odd Stem to Base Even Day 4 Counter Trey / Counter Pass & Base Defenses vs. 2 x 2 & 3 x 1 and our Checks #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: As an OL coach I'm good with practice being split into 50% Indy, 20% Group, and 30% Team...I have also accepted I will probably never get this split #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 Continued Day 5 1 & 3 Step Passing Schemes & Base Fronts with CV5 behind it.
Then review and drill the dickens out of it at Camp and all summer, adding a twist when they get good and need a treat #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: to me the best practices are reps in games situations with our gameplan. During fall camp before the first game I like half of it to be Indy with the other half being group and team. As the season goes on Indy time gets less and less but practices get shorter #txhsfbchat
@txhsfbchat Q3, A3 - we save INDY for END of Practice -at that point we can determine individual needs based on group & team execution of concepts. Pic shows how it’s broken up in S2A GPS #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) depends on where you are in the season. Definitely more Indy in the beginning or if a new concept is introduced. As the season progresses it should even out but Indy time remains super important. You have to sharpen your craft each day. That’s Indy time. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) It can vary by position & offensive scheme imo. Some positions like OL might require more Indy time but QBs, WRs and RBs might need more time to work together for timing purposes and this could include working against DBs & LBs. But I would say Indy/Group > Team #txhsfbchat
Q3: Depends really on what pt in the season. Earlier I like more Indy time w/my OLine - working on fundamentals and also on the "Why" of our base O. As the season gets rolling and we get in to league, I like more time working together on O. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3; Indo time depends on numbers, but in perfect world (remember I am HFC that coaches OL) 40% Indo 35% Group 25% Team #TXHSFBCHAT Had a OL tell me our Practices were tougher than Rollo's at Mater Dei - I was shocked I said how? He said at MD you go to Indo with 15 to 18 OL
A3)Equal parts tackling and indy time, last third will be spilt between 7v7 and team. Team will be mostly a recognition session. Slow, lots of align, assign and whys. #txhsfbchat
He said they go 20 minutes with those 15 to 18, at Gold Beach you send 7 to 9 players to Indo for 20 minutes. Yikes I said - I must have combined some conditioning on sled I guess????? #TXHSFBCHAT Numbers matter i
Without pads we utilize form on shields and sleds for oline and dline. We play 7v7 with skill guys. Once we’re in pads it’s 100% contact for everybody #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: We work to install everything without pads, plus work the basic fundamentals of footwork and hand placement...when we put the pads on, we start the process over and add contact #TXHSFBCHAT
A4) more initial install... probably spend more time on the "why" and understanding scheme... anything that can be worked on and be realistic without pads #txhsfbchat
A4: First 6 days we teach practice structure or our routines, our EDD Drills, our expectations. Yes we teach them HOW to Practice like a Panther! Then we Install and Teach Schemes, Fundamentals & Techniques. We explain what Practice Periods will transition to in Pads #TXHSFBCHAT
@txhsfbchat Q4 - A4: everything we attempt to do in S2A GPS is simulation of game like speed decision simulations. We never want to be w/o Helmet/Sh.Pads - a well oiled offense needs to sharpen the blade on Thurs not walk. Central nervous system ready for Friday night #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q4: What do you cover the days of practice without pads and how do you transition your scheme to practicing in pads? #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: The programs I’ve been with we covered the exact same we did as if we were in full pads. Personally i emphasize fundamentals. The only difference was we had more Indy time since we couldn’t live during team. #txhsfbchat
A4) In fall Thurs is no pads day and we review all special teams before breaking up into O & D for final walk thrus. On O we check personnell groups, formations, motions, special checks & situational calls, and walk thru our plays we feel best about based on gameplan #txhsfbchat
One way is by planning them. The kids think its just team, but give them a game like situation, such as 3 or 4 plays to get a first down. OT is good. Reward the unit that accomplishes their goal #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q5: Do you flip part of your practice? How do you incorporate the ability to introduce or instruct electronically? #TXHSFBCHAT
@JustPlaySS is a online playbook video quiz and game planning system. Players all have accounts and can access it whenever has been a great teaching tool!
A5: We flip, last year we had a halftime period where we showed film on ipads of the first half of practice, weren’t real consistent with it though #txhsfbchat
@txhsfbchat Q5 - A5: We do walks, waste little time (efficient warm ups) in warms, We have 12 FIVE minute periods-in periods we will use A sideline replay system for instant feedback. And B/C we are on field in a small time we then can have QK film review post prac #TXHSFBCHAT
