I'm Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of "Learn Like a PIRATE!" Thanks for joining the discussion tonight everyone! And BIG TIME thanks to @cwilcoxKSU for moderating! #LearnLAP
Hi all...Patricia Williams I work w/ new to the profession teachers seeking certification throught the alternative cert route at Region 10 ESC #learnlap
Hi Melanie! Laura, 6th Grade ELA and Social Studies teacher from MA here. My first Twitter chat. Looking forward to learning and sharing with you all tonight. #LearnLAP
A1. Engaged learning is when students are motivated and want to complete the tasks. Empowered gives students a voice, let's them have an impact on the world and their surroundings. Empowering kids is authentic, kind and necessary. It helps support our leaders= kids. #LearnLAP
A1: Engaged learning is anytime a student is an active, willing participant. Empowered learning when students are allowed to guide t and choose their own learning paths. #LearnLAP
A1: engaged learning means Ss are interested in the topic or content but empowered learning is when the Ss want more. They investigate topics and take their learning into their own hands. #PBL#LearnLAP
A1: Engaged learning is when Ss are actively involved in what is going on. I know that @nearpod engages my Ss. Empowered learning is when Ss feel like they have a voice and feel like they are in control of their own learning. Discovery learning helps with this. #learnlap
A1: Engaged learning means Ss are intrigued. We have their attention and they’re into what we’re doing. Empowered learning is where we see passion and ownership take over our Ss where they are leading their learning #LearnLAP
A1: engaged means learners are active and interested, empowered means that they're making decisions about their learning - I'd think that an empowered learner is engaged as well but not necessarily vice versa #LearnLAP
A1: Engaged learning, students appear to be having fun and are following directions. Empowered learners are those who are taking charge and learning on their own pace in their own way. #LearnLAP
This has been a battle for me. I want students to feel empowered in my classroom, but I think we have to e gave them first, not always easy to do #LearnLAP#edchat
A1: Engaged learning means that Ss are interested & involved, but empowered learning allows for them to be partners in the development and implementation of where the boat heads. #LearnLAP
Empowered=Ss Voice, Choice, Decisions and Rich embedded learning; soul deep learning
Engaged=Ss working w/ & around information; it may lead to retention; brain deep learning but not to the core to the soul #learnlap
Could not agree more! Empowered learning is about the kids! Kids should have an authentic voice in their learning including the decision making. #learnlap#risdchat#LyonLeads
A1. Engaged learning is when students are motivated and want to complete the tasks. Empowered gives students a voice, let's them have an impact on the world and their surroundings. Empowering kids is authentic, kind and necessary. It helps support our leaders= kids. #LearnLAP
Engaged is highly interested - empowered is beyond interest - it is taking control and seeking more. Not engaged by content or teacher, but self-motivated to reach for the next level #LearnLAP
A1 Engaged learning means that the students are actively involved with what their learning, whereas empowered learning gives students a voice in the path their learning will take. #LearnLAP
Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth (with apologies to PT Barnum). I did alternative route through @TeachForAmerica 27 yrs ago and remain a proud educator. #LearnLAP
A1: Empowered=Ss Voice, Choice, Decisions and Rich embedded learning; soul deep learning --- Engaged=Ss working w/ & around information; it may lead to retention; brain deep learning but not to the core to the soul #learnlap#learnlap
I think of empowered learning as one where the decision making is shifted to the students - we can give them tools and strategies to explore their passions and share their voices. #LearnLAP
A1 Empowered learning has students asking new questions. It doesn't have a "ending" and Ss are left wanting more. My class did a community development project that left kids with the opportunity to create a park. Ss are still talking about it! #LearnLAP
A1: If students are engaged learners, they’re focused and happily learning. But if students are empowered learners, they’re hungry for learning. They can’t. Get. Enough. #LearnLAP
Engaged is highly interested - empowered is beyond interest - it is taking control and seeking more. Not engaged by content or teacher, but self-motivated to reach for the next level #LearnLAP
A1 Empowered learning involves student ownership and is student-driven and is meaningful and relevant to the learner- not always the case with engaged learning which could be teacher directed #LearnLAP
A1. Ss that are engaged are following the leaders and learning what they are framed to learn. Ss that are empowered take ownership and follow their heart, interests, abilities, and dreams to learn what they need to succeed. #LearnLAP
A1: During engaged learning students are actively involved and topic is high interest. Empowered learning is student driven and gives students a voice in their own learning. #LearnLAP#momauguinproud
A1. Empowered is giving students a voice/choice-They are driving their education. Empowering them to make connections outside classroom walls! Engaged is motivation, engrossed, while being empowered/ they go hand in hand;)
#LearnLAP

A1: If students are engaged learners, they’re focused and happily learning. But if students are empowered learners, they’re hungry for learning. They can’t. Get. Enough. #LearnLAP
Engaged learning has students involved and participating, but empowered learning allows for students to maybe control the lesson, delegate aspects of it to their peers, and definitely has more buy-in #learnlap
A1) Engaged learning means Ss are excited and interested about something, but empowered learning requires a student that generates that excitement through their own passion/drive. #LearnLAP
A1 Engaged learning is where the student is focused on the TEACHER to learn. Empowered learning is where the student is focused on themselves to learn.#LearnLAP
A1: If students are engaged learners, they’re focused and happily learning. But if students are empowered learners, they’re hungry for learning. They can’t. Get. Enough. #LearnLAP

A1 Engaged learning is where the student is focused on the TEACHER to learn. Empowered learning is where the student is focused on themselves to learn.#LearnLAP
A1 Students can be engaged, but still not in charge of their own learning - they can be passive. Empowered requires action on their part so is far more powerful encouraging life long learning/learning for the sake if learning - not just marks #LearnLAP
A1: Engaged=> about appearance - Ss can look and act engaged; a step up from compliance. Empowered=> Self-motivated to reach desired outcomes. It is about them; it is personal. #learnlap
A1: During engaged learning students are actively involved and topic is high interest. Empowered learning is student driven and gives students a voice in their own learning. #LearnLAP#momauguinproud
It's far more uncomfortable there :P
Ts don't have nearly as much "control" when they have empowered Ss, but what an awesome ride it becomes! #LearnLAP
A1: If students are engaged learners, they’re focused and happily learning. But if students are empowered learners, they’re hungry for learning. They can’t. Get. Enough. #LearnLAP
A1: The difference between engaged learning and empowered learning is the difference between reading a delicious recipe and making the food to enjoy #LearnLAP
A1: Engaged learning is when students are focused on problem-solving the task(s) and in conversation with others. Empowered learning is taking that learning to make positive change. #LearnLAP
A1: As a student I’m always engaged because I wanted to be a teacher pleaser. I loved when my teachers empowered me because that’s when I truly learned. #LearnLAP
A1. Engaged learning is when Ss are having fun and enjoying learning, and laughing. Empowered learning is Ss are owning their own learning taking the lead and showing leadership roles. #learnlap
A2: I feel like a teacher can empower his/her Ss by giving students a voice and utilizing discovery learning. I want my students to be lifelong learners, and I feel like schools can sometimes diminish that through testing and pressure put on our Ss. #learnlap
A2: sometimes it starts with letting go of control of the learning that is happening! Create an opportunity but don’t dictate the experience. #LearnLAP
A1 Students can be engaged, but still not in charge of their own learning - they can be passive. Empowered requires action on their part so is far more powerful encouraging life long learning/learning for the sake if learning - not just marks #LearnLAP
A1: If students are engaged learners, they’re focused and happily learning. But if students are empowered learners, they’re hungry for learning. They can’t. Get. Enough. #LearnLAP
A2: PBL for sure and providing open-ended learning opportunities where students are deciding in which direction they’re going...Student-centered and led. We’re just there to facilitate. #LearnLAP
A2 Educators can empower daily by giving students leadership in learning. It is by providing authentic learning adventures, by making a difference, by uplifting their voice, by putting the fun back in learning. Create engaging experiences based on their needs/passions. #LearnLAP
A1: What a great question! I see engaged learning as active participation and focus. Empowered learning relies more on Ss knowing their voices, experiences, & identities are heard & influence our teaching. They KNOW what they share matters. #LearnLAP
Amazingly everyone wanted a turn to read out loud!
Why?
Because it was all about dinosaur poop! 🦖💩
Thanks #StoryWorksJr for providing compelling text! 📖👍🏼 #ellchat
A2) This year I tailored our first math unit about a flock of feral red ringed parrots in our neighborhood that originated from India. A local history unknown to our kids #LearnLAP
A2: Part of it is being a lifelong learner and always looking for opportunities for your Ss. Another way is by not only encouraging Ss to take the lead, but helping them understand what it means! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A2 By providing students with experiences that connect them to the real life & make them feel as though they are an asset to the school, community, world etc.
A2: sometimes it’s as simple as posing a question and then getting out of the way to let them explore, discover, question, & learn. #LearnLAP#risdchat#LyonLeads
It's far more uncomfortable there :P
Ts don't have nearly as much "control" when they have empowered Ss, but what an awesome ride it becomes! #LearnLAP
A2 The freedom to make mistakes. Valuing thought and creativity over just one correct answer. Allowing time for students to think and interact with materials in ways we would never think of as teachers. #LearnLAP
A2: Educators can use content in lessons that are of student interest. We can positively surprise our students when we know about the latest cool things in their world. #LearnLAP
A2: student choice! I had my Ss do a poll last semester to ask what topics they were most interested in. Then I will cater all of my ELA content to those topics. For example, my Ss are interested by science, animals, + fantasy. Engagement leads to empowerment! #LearnLAp
A2 Empowered learning experiences should tap into student interest. #geniushour is a perfect example of what Empowered learning should look like #LearnLAP
Providing opportunities for students to pursue passions and wonder about new learnings removes complacency and provides a pathway to empowerment. #LearnLAP
A2 In sci w/#NGSS this is a natural byproduct Putting Ss in position to solve a problem come up w/a solution is a key Like that book "If you give a mouse a cookie..." If you give a S a problem... #LearnLAP
A2: #PBL, #geniushour and having Ss be part of curriculum planning...ask "we need to learn__ how do you want to do that?" Allow for differences & lots of choice #LearnLAP
A2: empowered is where I want to go! Been working at increasing choice and voice throughout - looking to drive individual motivators through connecting interests. Sometimes I feel I’m getting there, sometimes it falls flat...but baby steps 👣 #ShiftThis#LearnLAP
A2: Been inspired to learn more about 20% time. Not sure where to start except what I have heard in podcast. I want my students to be more producers #LearnLAP
A2 The freedom to make mistakes. Valuing thought and creativity over just one correct answer. Allowing time for students to think and interact with materials in ways we would never think of as teachers. #LearnLAP
A2 A2 By providing students with experiences that connect them to real life & make them feel as though they are an asset to the school, community, world etc. #learnlap
This is the ultimate Q. S choice means you truly need S choice in rules, projects, topics. Don't focus on grades, in fact minimize them as much as possible. Finally, plan for a product in mind and allow Ss to go public with it in some way. #LearnLAP
A1 CHOICE.....I am big proponent of letting students and their brains choose what works for them. We need Ss to advocate for their own learning #learnlap
As we char, I have students taking charge. We’ve been out of school for four days due to our 13 in. Snow- they are on Ghangout with me posing math problems to each other! They miss School! #learnlap
A2: Empowered Ss ask the T less and less - provide Ss with choice in how to demonstrate learning, giving opportunities for them to set their own goals and assess themselves #learnlap
Multi-tasking tonight...creating a retake math test (learning shouldn't stop after one test) and following the Learn Lap discussion. #multitasking#LearnLAP
A2: Empowerment also means having their work shared with authentic audiences so they can make a difference right now, not just in the future. #LearnLAP
A2: Allowing for students to take control of class discussions. They tend to stay near the class topic, but it gives them a chance to voice their questions/opinions. Always amazed with what they have to say :) #learnlap
A2: Start by listening and reflecting. Then, act on what you hear. Find ways to engage student voice and choice in the classroom. Ensure Ss know you see them & use this knowledge to inform your class content and curriculum. Craft lessons that matter. #LearnLAP

#LearnLAP
A2: Empower students by trusting them. Let them take risks, let them see it’s okay to make mistakes, and let them take control - it’s their classroom too 😀 #LearnLAP
The same way I would foster to a reluctant learner in any other method of teaching. Patience. If they don’t want to do it, I can find an alternative for them but I try everything else first. Usually after they see the spark in their peers, they come around. #learnlap
A2. Ts need to listen to their learner's voice. Allow them to contribute to the learning process by sharing what they need and finding ways to guide them to find their answers and their learning. #LearnLAP
Using project based learning can be one way an educator can empower students. PBL lessons can provide choice and collaboration with students. It can be a small Makerspace activity or a full project. #LearnLAP
A2: We can provide learning experiences that empower students by finding out their learning interests (listening to their voice), giving them choice in how they want to develop their new learning and providing resources that support their learning. #LearnLAP#momauguinproud
A2: I believe it starts with creating a culture in which students feel valued enough to feel that they have the ability to change the world. Their beliefs regarding their ability to make change will play a role in them feeling empowered #LearnLAP
A2 Empowered learning experiences should tap into student interest. #geniushour is a perfect example of what Empowered learning should look like #LearnLAP
A2. Develop a #familyculture where my kids and I are free to make mistakes and fail enthusiastically -hook them to where they don’t want to go home or to specials;) relate to real world experiences. Have fun with them and ENJOY the journey! #LearnLAP
Usually, the reluctant learner’s excuse is, “I’m not creative.” I don’t let that stop them from partaking! We have to find THEIR creativity. What makes them feel empowered? #learnlap

Agreed! Is there a connection that I can help the Ss make between my objective and their passion? What part of my lesson is truly non-negotiable. May be less than you think! #learnlap
Provide the time where students have the opportunity to formulate their own questions about what they really question in life. Observe and patiently wait for one answer lead to the next question and the next! #LearnLAP
Using project based learning can be one way an educator can empower students. PBL lessons can provide choice and collaboration with students. It can be a small Makerspace activity or a full project. #LearnLAP
A2 Student interests should be invited & considered in curriculum planning. Also flexibility in the classroom to follow where the students are keen to explore #learnlap
A2: I love passion projects, genius hour, maker spaces...but I think it all comes down to student voice and knowing what they're interested in, what they're passionate about, and how they learn best. #LearnLAP
A2: We must establish the right culture so students know the world is open to them-so many things are possible. We talk about student-centered culture so students are empowered. #LearnLAP
Sure have! I REALLY sold it to my admin and got to create a MS #geniushour course & all of our elem got onboard too :) I LOVE it! It's quite easy to link curricular outcomes to pretty much any project :) #LearnLAP
YES! We have to teach Ss what it means to be part of a #studentled classroom and that it is ok take the lead - too often, this kind of environment is novel and new! #learnlap
What a master he was in getting the best out of each and everyone one of his players. Not just on the court, but off. LOVE reading books about his ideas on leadership. #LearnLAP
A7: Leadership: John Wooden was a master of leadership and created leaders throughout his life. Leadership is action, not a position. I strive to create leaders in my kids. Create leaders for today and for the future. #learnlap
A3: Students have to feel valued and safe #Maslow. We cultivate thinking over just right answers. If we make thinkers, they are going to find new interests in the process of making mistakes. #LearnLAP
A3: patience is key. Let the Ss be curious. Curiosity can lead to intrinsic motivation. It's up to us as educators to listen and foster this for our Ss. #LearnLAP
A3) there is no magic answer here. It can be anything from #geniusHour, to a home visit for dinner. THis is where the art of teaching happens #LearnLAP
A3: I feel like teachers can help students be intrinsically motivated by motivating them to find their passion and find what truly sparks their learning. The student also needs to motivated though to take action. #learnlap
A3: This is tough, we've all got those kids that lack motivation. The best way I've found to help Ss develop intrinsic motivation is to provide them choices, and encourage them, let them see you believe in them. Also, stop leaning so heavily on extrinsic rewards. #learnlap
A3 I desperately want to say yes, and I'm sure that the answer is yes, but I still struggle with this every day w/ my HS Ss. Grades rule all right now, but we're trying to change it. I'm open to suggestions! #LearnLAP
A3: Great question. One thing I've found is that my Twitter PLN has increased my intrinsic motivation. Create a classroom where students discuss ideas they care about! #LearnLAP
A3 We can all develop Ss intrinsic motivation by giving students a chance to lead learning, develop passion, make a difference, do something that matters, collaborate globally, be kind, authentic and creative. Take away rewards, create meaningful learning. #LearnLAP
A1 - I can best articulate this in a pirate travel metaphor lol. I feel like engaged learners enjoy being on the ship, helping out on the deck etc, where empowered learners want to drive the ship and determine the destination #LearnLAP
A3: When you cultivate a community of care, foster solid relationships & focus on content that matters & speaks to the lived experiences of the Ss, they are more likely to find that intrinsic motivation. #LearnLAP
A1 engaged learners are attentive and actively participating in the learning. Empowered leaners are those who take control of their learning and seek to share their learning with a broader audience to ultimately spark a bigger discussion or change #LearnLAP
A2: Keeping it real! Learning experiences that are based on real-world connections and #pbl allow for students to be motivated, engaged, and empowered. #LearnLAP
A3. In building relationships, finding out what Ss are interested in and building classroom activities and projects and learninthat relate to everyday life around their interests. #learnlap
A2: Allowing Ss to have ownership of their learning. Student input. Let them have a voice in curriculum and lesson planning. You’ll be amazed and what they can come up with! #learnlap@smslearns
Same here! I keep wanting to design lessons and create an environment that I think members of my PLN would want to do, because I keep finding my PLN is innovative and student centered! #LearnLAP
A3: YES! Students will comply in a classroom of a teacher they do not enjoy being around. However, if the student likes you, they will go above and beyond expectations! Build those relationships! #LearnLAP
A3 Only if you know what the intrinsic motivations are of the students. When you know what makes them tick, then you know how to motivate them. #LearnLAP
A3 (b): I can also relate this to my Twitter usage. I was inspired by @RaeHughart to join, but I put in effort in terms of joining chats. I feel empowered to make a change, and I am lucky to have this support system. Intrinsic motivation cannot be forced. #learnlap
A3: Stems from building a culture that failure is not something to fear but something to build upon. So much intrinsic motivation is lost because of the fear of failure. #LearnLAP
A3: I think we can definitely help Ss with intrinsic motivation through self-reflection,#geniushour, relevant, authentic learning experiences (#pbl), & empowering them to be accountable. #LearnLAP
A3: Absolutely can! When we focus on Ss strengths & interest is gives them courage to try. The more Ss try & succeed the more motivated they will become. #LearnLAP
A1 - I can best articulate this in a pirate travel metaphor lol. I feel like engaged learners enjoy being on the ship, helping out on the deck etc, where empowered learners want to drive the ship and determine the destination #LearnLAP
A3b: I struggle with empowerment because I know it means I have to let go of my control in the class and put it in the hands of the students. I don’t do that All the time #LearnLAP
A2 - #LearnLAP. Honestly, I think the best thing we can do for students is to show them ways to articulate/curate their ideas, and then help them along the way in that curation. When students see they are doing good things, they want more.
A3 Intrinsic motivation can be developed when Ss are involved in learning experiences that they find meaningful and have personal connections. #LearnLAP
A3: when students find their learning relevant and when it is in their zone of proximal development, then they will be intrinsically motivated #LearnLAP
A3: Absolutely! It starts with helping students recognize their unique strengths and getting rid of this antiquated idea that there is one answer or one way to do things. #LearnLAP
A2: Allowing Ss to have ownership of their learning. Student input. Let them have a voice in curriculum and lesson planning. You’ll be amazed and what they can come up with! #learnlap@smslearns
A3: started a web development class this semester. Letting students pick the content of their webpage. They seem pretty engaged to learn html tags today when it’s for something they care about. #LearnLAP
A3: Stems from building a culture that failure is not something to fear but something to build upon. So much intrinsic motivation is lost because of the fear of failure. #LearnLAP
A3: We can certainly help it along. It is a struggle sometimes because students give up and get stuck in a fixed mindset. I've found that constructive feedback and encouragement can help. #LearnLAP
A3 I really want to scrap the grade scale and implement reflection tools like learning logs and blogging. I want my Ss to know that they are worth more than a point value. #LearnLAP
It is a good start, but if you only make it about toys and gadgets and never go further, students will never develop the intrinsic motivation. #LearnLAP
A3. Creating family culture- My kiddos created our family imovies- they were empowered/ engaged because of the culture- ❤️❤️❤️ #Family#LearnLAPhttps://t.co/92Gnh38mun
A3 As @gcouros would say: relationships, relationships, relationships. Encouragement and support combined with good relationship all help a student grow and learn #LearnLAP
A3: Absolutely! By first building relationships, holding them to high standards even when they think they can't meet them, build their academic self confidence, invest in them, & most importantly...listen to them. Motivation & feeling valued go hand in hand. #LearnLAP
Q3 - #LearnLAP Absolutely - teachers can definitely create a-ha moments 4 their students, which in turn might spark the beginnings of intrinsic motivation. Then as we C these behaviours, use that positive reinforcement to allow students to know that U see good things happening.
#learnlap yes I believe they can! You have to continue to stay passionate about what you are teaching and doing. And you have to constantly continue to build your relationship w/ Ss. The more we care about them the more they will begin to care about themselves.
A3: All too often, Ts tell Ss they want to hear what they have to say, but then fail to act. This only hinders motivation and empowerment. If we say our Ss ideas, experience, opinion & voice matters, we MUST follow through. #LearnLAP
A3: Yes! Believe in them and build meaningful relationships. Help them set goals, reach them, and make new ones. Don’t forget: kids pick up on everything - so smile and laugh with them too. #LearnLAP
There are so many aspects that need to to be in place for motivation to occur. Love of learning is so important for students to find intrinsic motivation. Creating a classroom in which Ss are happy and excited to be there is a good first step #learnLAP
A3 taking time to build relationships with your students and genuinely know their interests. Designing activities that align to their interests and / or learning styles. Allowing student voice and choice will lead to intrinsic motivation #LearnLAP
A3 For educators to cultivate intrinsic motivation in students, relationships are crucial.- Students must believe they are part of the team & that their efforts make a difference. #learnlap
Yes. Which is why all that time we spend at the beginning of the year is so very important. We need to get to know them, before we can truly teach them #LearnLAP
A3 Only if you know what the intrinsic motivations are of the students. When you know what makes them tick, then you know how to motivate them. #LearnLAP
A2: Building connections. Getting to know about their interests, & providing opportunities for choice & allowing them to take ownership of their learning. Building trust. Providing safety so they feel comfortable with taking risks. #learnlap#momauguinproud
A3 Daniel Pink has some interesting ideas on motivation. His TED Talk helped me realize it is not about providing rewards and carrots, but focusing on making the work worth and staying in the struggle with them #LearnLAP
A3b: I struggle with empowerment because I know it means I have to let go of my control in the class and put it in the hands of the students. I don’t do that All the time #LearnLAP
A3: You can’t force anyone to do something they don’t want...but you can give them experiences that make them feel the benefits of doing something! Once a student realizes the benefits they become motivated #LearnLAP
A3: I feel like teachers can help students be intrinsically motivated by motivating them to find their passion and find what truly sparks their learning. The student also needs to motivated though to take action. #learnlap
Empowered learning is when Ss are in charge of their learning. They facilitate their own learning&use Ts as back boards for their own inquiry, thinking, & conclusions. Whereas engaged learning is more driven by teacher creativity which might be fostered by sss interests.#learnlap
The connected feeling a PLN creates breeds intrinsic motivation => the same goes for Ss! A genuine relationship lets Ss know they matter! Relate before you educate! #LearnLAP
A3: Great question. One thing I've found is that my Twitter PLN has increased my intrinsic motivation. Create a classroom where students discuss ideas they care about! #LearnLAP
A3: Yes! If we find out what our kids are interested in, we can use that to add to our lessons. My goal is to continue finding ways to incorporate their interests into US History; makes learning fun for everyone :) #learnlap
A3 I believe so, by facilitating authentic engagement in the material and providing authentic competency opportunities students can have increase intrinsic motivations! #LearnLAP
A3-oh, tough one! Sometimes I’m motivated by the carrot on the stick, too. Trying to find it every day. Novelty helps, excitement, creating buzz. Learning becomes contagious. #LearnLAP
A3: We have to identify or ss.motivation and find ways to connect the material we are required to teach to the unique students in our class. Tap into their interests! #learnlap#risdchat
A3: Educators can develop students intrinsic motivation by teaching students to have a positive internal dialogue. Ex: I can do it! I will do it because I know it's the right thing to do! Setting clear expectations and teaching them it's okay to fail as long as you try. #LearnLAP
A3 if Students know that the reward is a treat, they only reach towards that carrot. If you teach them how intrinsically motivating it is to own and discover their own learning - that is when a carrot is a waste of time. #LearnLAP
A4: I learned once thy you must open up and talk about your own struggles. Students see you be vulnerable, they will accept the hard times as well #LearnLAP
A3: TS have the opportunity to create optimal conditions inside the classroom and lower/remove the obstacles that impede confidence to recognize their intrinsic motivation. #learnlap
When a teacher shows interest in what students are interested in, they feel validated in what they want to learn. This validation helps keep their inner fire 🔥 moving consistently ahead. #LearnLAP
A4 Give them chances to get feedback, fix mistakes, and keep failing forward! Too many think that once they turn something in, then they are done learning about it. Help them see that learning never stops! #LearnLAP
A4: It is all about relationships. If you develop a positive relationship with students all you have to do is ask and students will give you that extra try. The way you develop that relationship is by modeling a perpetual insistence on growing and learning. #learnlap
A3 For educators to cultivate intrinsic motivation in students, relationships are crucial.- Students must believe they are part of the team & that their efforts make a difference. #learnlap
Intrinsic motivation in students comes from teachers letting go from being the sage on the stage to instead the guide on the side. When Ss have the opportunity to be active learners and not passive recipients of info - they CARE. #LearnLAP
A4 -- Talk intentionally and deliberately about the challenges they will face with empowerment, but provide them with examples of the ultimate joy and success of this. Show them it is worth it! #LearnLAP
A4) We must understand their #zoneOfProximalDevelopment. Students, teachers, people in general have individual comfort zones they operate in. If we don't respect where they are, we are not providing healthy struggle. #LearnLAP
A4 By focusing on their growth rather than simple acheivement. This means everyone can experience success regardless of where they start. When students feel competent and they feel growth it is easier to lean in! #LearnLAP
A4: I hope this doesn’t sound too mean but... by never answering students questions for them. Just teach them how to find their own answers by exploring new resources - peers, internet, anchor charts, etc. #LearnLAP
I fall into that same line of thinking some days. I feel at times my students are not learning because it's not "quiet" when in reality they are working really well. #LearnLAP
I see giving students options of assessment choices playing a role@in my classroom. Something that interest them that still showed their understanding #LearnLAP
A4: Foster a classroom that focuses on a growth mindset! This only happens when the teacher is open and candid with their students about their successes/failures! #LearnLAP
A4 I think modeling is huge. Ss should see us struggle or that we don't know all the answers and then how we go about overcoming hurdles. Building relationships will also help so that they will be open to communication about their struggles. #LearnLAP
A3: This is where relationships w/Ss are so important. If they feel a connection with you, they will be empowered & motivated to do more. Using & modeling positive language, so they hear it, and begin to internalize it! #learnlap#momauguinproud
A4: The culture in the classroom sets the stage for this willingness. When you trust those around you to support, encourage, celebrate & collaborate with you, then you are more willing to keep trying :) Living this is KEY! #LearnLAP
A4: I say by modeling the behaviors yourself! Let Ss see your struggles and how you work through them.
Another way is by using question stems to help students when they get stuck. These can be used for student discourse or between Ss and Ts. #LearnLAP
A4: I strongly believe in the power of yet and growth mindset. I was born 3 weeks premature, and I do not let that stop me from following my dream. I try to inspire my students to do the same. I have faith in them, and I know they can rise to my expectations. #learnlap
A4 We need to encourage learning & failure. Need to allow students to feel comfortable to make mistakes. Need to assess more than once & allow Ss to demonstrate learning even after the "formal" date. You need to walk the talk. Talk about how to deal with struggles. #LearnLAP
A3. My kidslove to teach me! I learned about bats, Virginia Hall which was super interesting, Columbus Day and fun facts about myself;) #empower#LearnLAP
A4: Model, model, model! Kids need to see examples of struggle before they can embrace their own. Encourage past the frustration. Teaching perseverance in all areas is extremely important. They call them soft skills but there's nothing soft about them! #learnlap
A4: To be honest, I struggle with this in my own life. I think being authentic & honest in sharing this truth is a start. Then, sharing how we all struggle, but the challenge brings growth! Sharing the narratives of others helps them see they are not alone. #LearnLAP
So many students think "it's over...time to move on" when they receive feedback. Empower them to learn, grow and improve from the feedback. Great thought! #LearnLAP
Q4 -Good question - leaning into the struggle is hard. I like to show short videos on a day we are working on something particularly challenging of small kids learning to do something (walking, biking). Figuring stuff out isn't easy. #LearnLAP
A3. My kids love to teach me! I learned about bats, Virginia Hall which was super interesting, Columbus Day and fun facts about myself;) #empower#LearnLAP
A4. When Ss are empowered, they have all the energy required to overcome struggle. Struggle pushes students to use their multiple intelligences to solve problems, persevere and collaborate with others to find solutions #LearnLAP
A4: mastery learning, allow retakes, and I think we need to rethink school and go #gradless. School should be about learning not performing. #DitchGrades#LearnLAP
A4: if the students are invested - making choices about their learning, they'll be much more likely to embrace the struggle. And teachers HAVE to model it - students need to see how I react to adversity, rise to the challenge, & lean in to the struggle! #LearnLAP
To that end, right now I am doing a project alongside the students in my #PBL academy. They are helping to assess me and hold me accountable. #LearnLAP
A4 that is a good question that was staring me in the face today, how to fail, fail, trial and error, retry, reboot, reboot, (yes, my computer was being restarted at the same exact time). Students do you see the comparison, you keep trying until it works. #LearnLAP
A4: Makes sure students understand and believe that you care more about growth than grades. Give descriptive feedback and encouragement. Share stories of persistence with them. #LearnLAP
A4: Lead by example, give them the opportunity to fail without criticism, and don't give the answers to the Q's so quickly. You have to build the #culture first. #learnlap
A4: creating a classroom community that fosters taking risks and making mistakes . Actively modeling making mistakes as a teacher and the importance of reframing how we look at challenging or difficult situations #LearnLAP
A4: This is what I teach often in class. Having students plan for problems that may pop up during their project. This allows students to try to think a head and have a game plan if something goes wrong. #LearnLAP
A4: let Ss see your own failures!
Share your story!
They need to see/know/learn that life struggles are real and we all need to face them & we always need support to make to our ultimate goal. #Learnlap
I feel we need to give our Ss as many opportunities as possible to see, recognize, & reflect on their own growth. The more they see themselves growing the less likely struggles will stop them. Instead they will embrace a challenge. #LearnLAP
A4: Ss need to see us struggle and persevere through it. Ss are so perceptive to how we learn and it is essential that they see us stepping out our comfort zones and finding challenges. Being human at the front of the room earns respect and teaches them more than curric #LearnLAP
A4: transparency + authenticity! I always let my Ss see when I make a mistake and I let them know what I'm curious about! That way I can always encourage them to try even if they make a mistake or it takes them a little longer to figure it out. Mistakes = Learning. #LearnLAP
A4: By teaching #growthmindset. Teaching and modeling that learning is a process, not a one-and-done. Honoring learning that takes place at different times and at different paces. #LearnLAP
A2: By encouraging S's to be problem finders as well as problem solvers. Also, don't let them off the hook too quickly. Inspire that curiosity to burn brightly by asking higher level reflective questions. #learnLAP
A4. IF Ss feel comfortable in taking the risk in the classroom, they will take ownership of their learning and have the confidence to attempt to answer the questions. They know the def. F.A.I.L.. #learnlap
A4: Especially for AP, let them know that struggling is part of the course and it will improve over time. Showing how far they've come since the beginning of the year too. Share your experiences with the course if you've taken it! #learnlap
A4: Model, model, model! Kids need to see examples of struggle before they can embrace their own. Encourage past the frustration. Teaching perseverance in all areas is extremely important. They call them soft skills but there's nothing soft about them! #learnlap
A4: Let go of our assumptions, SEE the S for who she is & what she needs, remove barriers, & rely on more than quantitative data to tell a child’s story. #LearnLAP#risdchat#LyonLeads
A4: We make the struggle where the reward is. We give feedback & acknowledge the process over the product. We give opportunity to share the struggle not just the pretty finished product. We celebrate it! #LearnLAP
A4: (2) And, let them try again! I don't understand why we continue to hesitate in allowing Ss to learn from errors and resubmit assignments. If the purpose is to show learning and growth... let them do it. #LearnLAP
A4: set up class so it is about learning from failures & embracing lessons learned from failure, be open & honest about expectations, Glean ideas from the Socratic Method to keep those questions going...AND CELEBRATE the "FAILURES" they're one step closer to solutions #learnLAP
A4 The design of learning experiences on the edge of what students are capable of - ZOPD- Strategically grouping students within the learning environment- Create an environment where it's ok to make mistakes & learn from those mistakes. #learnlap
A4: We make the struggle where the reward is. We give feedback & acknowledge the process over the product. We give opportunity to share the struggle not just the pretty finished product. We celebrate it! #LearnLAP
A4 Pt 2: Also, helping them guide their critical thinking and problem solving skills by using strategic questioning. It allows students to stop and think of solutions to try. I then always end the convo. with "You got this!" or "I believe in you!" #LearnLAP
A4: give a REASON to keep trying - authentic audience, what comes next, proving growth to create excitement. Knowing WHY you should keep going = the push you need #LearnLAP
A4: Stay hyper focused on their learning goals and so everyone is focused on the journey and not the destination. Remember just because they get off track doesn’t mean they’re lost. #LearnLAP
A4: Sharing and modeling our own mistakes, failures and struggles along the way. Cheerleading. I tell my kids their brain grows wrinkles when they learn from a mistake and now they say “Whoops grew another wrinkle there” #LearnLAP
A4: Having a classroom built on trust and respect will give students the opportunity to make mistakes knowing it’s okay. Also, show students that struggling may not be comfortable but is oh-so-rewarding. Look at the end result. #LearnLAP
A4: We need to lead by example. Model and let them see how we work through and persevere with difficult things. Positively reinforce their efforts/perseverance through the process, not just the end product. #learnlap#momauguinproud
A4: We can encourage students to lean into struggle & stay with the question by creating an environment where they feel safe to take risks. We need to teach & model that there are many paths to the answer & sometimes you need to take/try more than one path to get there. #LearnLAP
A4: our districts shift to standards based report cards has helped shift how all students view their educational achievement . The emphasis is now placed on the journey and progress , not the end goal #LearnLAP
A5: Grit is a direct result of hope. I think that is from @fastcrayon. But if kids believe there is a chance, then they will preserve. If they believe they are valued. If they aren't worried obsessively with right and wrong, grit will come tumbling out. #learnlap
A5 You need to have grit yourself. Model the behavior. Keep pushing limits, don't find excuses, always try. Be okay to make mistakes in front of students. Wipe away perfection! Give students permission & encourage failure to learn. Important to keep trying, learning. #LearnLAP
A5: Specific praise. Praising student thought processes and effort is a good place to start. Students will work if they are acknowledged. So acknowledge them and praise that gritty spirit! #learnlap
A5 By not letting them off the hook, model what grit is and then walk students through moments where grit is required. Sometimes we just need that person/coach to hold us accountable, they may not like it in the moment but they will thank you in a year or two. #LearnLAP
A5: Model, model, model. Ss need to see that our learning is messy. They need to see times when our lives require grit to get to the next level. #LearnLAP
A4 (2): quick story. I got new tech for my classroom & I'm in front of the class struggling to figure it out & one of my Ss says "it's okay Mrs. Weirick. You can figure it out! Keep at it" then my class helped me figure it out. Struggling = learning. Even for Ts #LearnLap
A3 guide students in finding ways to demonstrate their learning and understanding rather than direct them. Allow them to be part of the process. #learnlap
A5: I try to encourage my students to persevere through challenges they may face. As a student teacher, I find myself needing to exhibit grit and working hard to help my students be successful. Learning is a process, and it is never finished. #learnlap
Yes....that is an excellent approach. I have had some students comment that this type of approach "doesn't feel like school." I kind of take that to be a good thing. 😀 #LearnLAP
A4 If you want students to stick with it, stop grading everything. It should be about the work and learning. Don't grade their practice, but make it meaningful so they choose to do it! #LearnLAP
A5 You need to have grit yourself. Model the behavior. Keep pushing limits, don't find excuses, always try. Be okay to make mistakes in front of students. Wipe away perfection! Give students permission & encourage failure to learn. Important to keep trying, learning. #LearnLAP
A4 Be honest with students about our own struggles, break the activity into smaller achievable chunks and celebrate each success along the way and let them know that the harder the struggle the greater the reward! #learnlap
A4: Persevering through the tough stuff comes from a support system of kiddos learning together. Teachers can cultivate this by infusing #cooperativelearning where Ss work as a TEAM, with individual accountability as well as being responsible for the learning of others #LearnLAP
A4. By creating that safe family environment beginning of the year! As a family we succeed, make mistakes, and fail enthusiastically together! This is in my room and we are our own cheerleaders! My kids have seen perseverance thru @breakoutEDU#coding@geniushour#LearnLAP
A4: our districts shift to standards based report cards has helped shift how all students view their educational achievement . The emphasis is now placed on the journey and progress , not the end goal #LearnLAP
A5 - Having students know you are always in their corner. Checking in. Asking deeper questions than "how are you". Helping them work through problems as they arise (in learning and in life) #learnlap
Don't let them give up or say they can't do it. Ask what you can do to help and what can they do to help themselves improve their weaknesses. It will take students willing to take the risk and teachers working with them every step of the way to succeed #learnlap
It's hard to open up, but if you keep that wall between students they can't see, they want to see you are real. So yes, tell them when your birthday is. #LearnLAP tell them how you fixed something at home, tell them about how you worked out problems.
A5 Grit, Resilence, Persistence, and Optimism have to be explicitly taught and modeled starting in Kindergarten. These are the skills that will be most important moving forward. #LearnLap
A5: celebrating small growths and accomplishments. If they learn the power in small accomplished goals...they’ll internalize that large goals are attainable #grit#growthmindset#Learnlap
A5 You need to have grit yourself. Model the behavior. Keep pushing limits, don't find excuses, always try. Be okay to make mistakes in front of students. Wipe away perfection! Give students permission & encourage failure to learn. Important to keep trying, learning. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP I feel we can do this in a few ways. One is the continually check in w/ them about their goals & progress. Two I think discussions are huge. Share w/ them experiences when we’ve had grit. Our Ss look up to us so much, let our experiences help teach them!
A5 You need to have grit yourself. Model the behavior. Keep pushing limits, don't find excuses, always try. Be okay to make mistakes in front of students. Wipe away perfection! Give students permission & encourage failure to learn. Important to keep trying, learning. #LearnLAP
A5) I reach for my lowest students and try and make them leaders and examples in class. They make a powerful example and a rising tide raises all ships. #leadFromTheBottom#cultivateGRIT#LearnLAP
A5: We need to start with small success and grow them. Ss need to see that they are capable and with increasing effort and perseverance growth will occur. Grit takes a long time to develop, starts with finding the confidence to keep going #LearnLAP
A5 When we empower students & build a community of connected learners, grit is more likely to be a quality possessed by our students. Persistence is critical- high expectations combined with all of the components of what it takes to empower students... #learnlap
A5 Having a learning community that encourages and supports all members. Learning along with the Ss can foster this. I blogged aling with my class this semester which was really benefucial in doing this #LearnLAP
Show them we care and are genuinely interested in not only what they are doing but the outcome as well. Reinforce the importance of their wonder! Positive feedback and questioning of what they are working on. #LearnLAP
I very much appreciate the idea of being up front with students about the challenges they will face. That sort of authenticity seems very effective. #LearnLAP
A5 by being supportive through failures, but leaving no room for staying there. Keeping conversation centered on learning from situations and problem solving. As my dad always says, "So what, now what?" #LearnLap
A5: Let student know that a deep desire to develop, coupled with a support network, will always lead to improvement, no matter how tough the challenge. #LearnLAP
A5 By working alongside of them. By not accepting mediocrity. Make them keep working for the product you know they are capable of...never let grading get in the way...accept redos etc.. #learnlap
A5. We support those Ss with feedback, allowing for reflection and questions, we celebrate their successes, contributions to discussions through communication and verbalizations. #learnlap
A5: Sometimes, having a class discussion for warm up or wrap up about problems and solutions can help. Opening a dialogue allows students to reflect and think of solutions for the future. #LearnLAP
Q5: provide them opportunity to practice it with a safety net...and model how to have the stick to it attitude. Be BRAVE enough to share a story or idea or learning that you are personally facing that will take grit and do a talk-aloud (professionally -obvi :) #learnLAP
A5 Grit, Resilence, Persistence, and Optimism have to be explicitly taught and modeled starting in Kindergarten. These are the skills that will be most important moving forward. #LearnLap
A5 Give them a chance to fail. As scary as it seems, building in low-stakes "failure points" & letting them take the L goes a long way toward building grit. They then get to reflect on that process and make real changes when the bigger assignment comes along #LearnLAP
A4 If you want students to stick with it, stop grading everything. It should be about the work and learning. Don't grade their practice, but make it meaningful so they choose to do it! #LearnLAP
A5 stop giving bad grades for incorrect work. Explain to Ss at the beginning of the year that it is going to be hard and that's ok. We pull out the complex text and struggle through them together from day 1. #LearnLAP
A5: One great way, is to provide challenge & allow for the struggle! Sometimes, it's tough to allow Ss to find solutions themselves & we (I) jump in to save them, but overcoming obstacles is VERY empowering. Be there to support! #LearnLAP

A5 If we want students to learn, we have to set them up with the right tools. Picasso would never have painted if he didn't have a brush. If you want them to work hard, they need to know what the paths are to get there. #learnlap
A4: By resisting the urge to give in to awkward silence. By responding with additional inquiry instead of just answering student questions directly. #LearnLAP
If you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE" & would like to connect with others at your grade level/job title, add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
A5: Never accepting anything less than their best, but being their #1 cheerleader the entire time. When they feel success after pushing through, they’ll start to enjoy the challenges that come their way. #learnlap
A6 I think by ensuring that we have a "not yet" mentality around growth and understanding. This puts the focus on the actual learning, not on grades or the final mark. This is difficult, but essential! #LearnLAP
I made a promise to my students that I won't grade them until we have practiced. Some teachers in school grade everything, including the daily HW! #learnlap
A4: By resisting the urge to give in to awkward silence. By responding with additional inquiry instead of just answering student questions directly. #LearnLAP
One of the greatest techniques for new teachers = if you don't feel uncomfortable by how long you have waited, then you haven't waited long enough! #learnlap
A5. By leading by example- I need to be that lifelong learner- Keep pushing the limits, thinking outside the box, learning from my #PLN colleagues- took a huge leap and posted my #observeme 😊 #LearnLAP
Lead by example❤️
A2: Empower S in the learning experience by giving them voice/choice in their learning. Service learning can be an excellent way to empower Ss. #learnlap
A4: model and practice that it's okay to make mistakes. We grow through risk taking. We have to encourage them to stick through the hard times and celebrate when they make it. #LearnLAP
A5 addition: teaching grit is just as important if not more to teach to the "smart" kids...you know the ones that can breeze through normal coursework. #LearnLAP
A5: believing in them & letting them know that, modeling & sharing about ourselves w/them. Giving examples of something that's difficult for us, modeling how we work through it. I like to let Ss know that adults make mistakes too!..it's how we all learn. #learnlap#momauguinproud
A6- for all of us, setting goals and reflecting on those goals is huge. Working towards goals, even if we seem to fail at first- having support (and a great teaching team) @jenmalitvbcps#learnlap
A6 To foster growth take away marks or give them the chance to continue the learning. Let Ss & Ts choose learning, lead learning, empower their voice and make a difference. Differentiate based on need. Make learning personal. Always have fun. BE KIND. #LearnLAP
A6: Showing what we do as educators to continue learning can be a great model. If they read, we read. Give them #passionproject or 20% time and do the same. #LearnLAP
A6- for all of us, setting goals and reflecting on those goals is huge. Working towards goals, even if we seem to fail at first- having support (and a great teaching team) @jenmalitvbcps#learnlap
true that! you're not going to save them and do the thinking/work for them! I literally count in my head after posing a Q, not every time but I try! #learnlap
If you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE" & are interested in moderating an upcoming #LearnLAP chat, please let me know! We have openings available! Veteran moderators & Rookies are welcome! :)
#5thchat is also available if you want a smaller audience for your first time moderating.
A6 as educators, having supportive leaders who allow us to take risks in the classroom and encourage a culture or "failing forward". Leaders who are present in classrooms more than just for formal observations #LearnLAP
A6: Focus on the learning experience, the wonder & the curiosity rather than strictly the outcome or standardized test scores. Take chances! Allow student experience to inform our teachinh. Give attention to the silenced voices! #LearnLAP
A2: Empower S in the learning experience by giving them voice/choice in their learning. Service learning can be an excellent way to empower Ss. #learnlap
A5. Also, believing in EVERY child! Huge advocate of #inclusion- no matter the disability their is always ABILITY! Wait time should be as long as the kid needs! Speaking from a teacher and a proud parent of 1 of my daughters who happens to have DS. #nodownaboutit#LearnLAP
A6 Personalization for Ts and Ss! We are more okay with failure when we are interested in what we are doing. I do a What Makes You Wonder project so students can explore, learn new techniques, and fail up #LearnLAP
A6 Pt 2: For educators, develop PLC's within schools and county/districts. Provide PD on #LearnLAP or other student lead classroom philosophies and practices. Encourage teachers to try new things and reflect on the gains or failure. #LearnLAP
A7 By providing opportunities to learn from one another via the #observeme movement. The more open we are about our profession and #pln the more growth we can have! #LearnLAP
A6 Clear goals that are communicated, and give them room and time to grow. Don't rush them, because learning doesn't always happen on your time table. #LearnLAP
A7 Allow Ss & Ts to have a voice and to choose. Allow them to create authentic learning, to challenge status quo, to be innovative. Help them by saying yes. Support them in creating magic. Uplift, celebrate, make a difference. Be kind, create smiles & experiences. #LearnLAP
A6: For Ts, be sure to continue reflection & professional development. But, also give priority to self-care. We can't continue grow if we have nothing left to give. Take time for yourself. #LearnLAP
A6: By showing interest in our Ss. Show that you care about who they are as an individual and a student. Showing interest will help Ss not only trust you as their teacher but will allow them to grow more than they ever thought possible. #LearnLAP
A6 generate growth through conversation with colleagues. Have an open discussion time with a moderator, like a Twitter chat but in person. Trying to start something like this at my school. #LearnLAP
A6: I foster a cultured trust by honoring Ss’ culture and Family traditions. We make tamales, tortillas, and publish books about tacos! They know that who they are matters
#Learnlap
A7) create environments that encourage experimentation, critical inquiry, critical debate, and accept failures as a necessary part of the process. #LearnLAP
A6: Letting your kids that you know the challenges with your course and you all are there to work together and succeed. Making sure kids have every available resource they need to accomplish their goals in the class #learnlap
A6: We can encourage our Ss to persevere and keep trying even when things become difficult. If our Ss see us being invested, they will be invested as well. #learnlap
A6: For Ts, be sure to continue reflection & professional development. But, also give priority to self-care. We can't continue to grow if we have nothing left to give. Take time for yourself. #LearnLAP
@cwilcoxKSU A7 #LearnLAP
Ss and T need a safe from adverse consequences environment. Standardized testing needs to be seen as a piece of a large puzzle not the end all. Ss are people. Not sets of data. They need to feel they have value beyond what they can score.
They have to hear the, process it, find meaning, search for an answer...in 3 seconds? We ask the Q already knowing what A we want to hear...SUPER unfair #LearnLAP
In reply to
@MathWithMsHawes, @Mtiesworth, @PaulONeill1972
A6. If we believe in our Ss, we can get them to say "I can do it." and start believing in themselves, where they will develop their own wings to fly! #learnlap
A7: leaders can seek feedback from staff as to what their individual PD and growth plans are. EdCamps and "Unconferences" allow greater ability for educators to take control of their own professional development #LearnLAP
I love this! Have you ever heard @AngelaMaiers talk about what breaks your heart? What a powerful question that intrinsically motivates kids! #LearnLAP#risdchat#LyonLeads
A7: I strongly believe that there is no greater superstar than someone who helps others. Continue to equip people with skills and strategies so that they can then go do the same. #learnLAP
Thank you to the moderators and the people who shared their thoughts on the #LearnLAP chat tonight. I learn so much from all of you. Thanks for making me better.
A7 Leaders can support by becoming truly invested in the process of education and getting to know each of their students and educators. They should be supportive, constructive, and above all build a trusting and respectful relationship. #LearnLAP
